#1 TSS Earnslaw Cruise and Walter Peak Farm Tour
đ˘ Book your cruise and farm tour on Viator or GetYourGuide â° Time: 3.5 hours đ¸ Cost: $145 NZD âď¸ Rating: 4.5 out of 5
On this guided tour (like on all the other tours), youâll take the iconic century-old coal-fired steamship â the TSS Earnslaw â from Queenstown to Walter Peak Farm.
At the farm, thereâs a wide variety of attractions and things to do. Our personal favourite was the sheep roundup!
Youâll see firsthand how a farmer rounds up sheep from a distance with the help of a sheep-herding dog as well as how they shear the sheep.
After the traditional farm experience, youâll have the chance to walk around the farm and see the beautiful property.
On the farm tour, youâll see sheep, deer, and even Scottish Highland Cattle! Itâs a great tour for the whole family.
Depending on the time of day you come, youâll finish the trip off with morning or afternoon tea. If thereâs any time left, you can walk through the property garden, take in the views over the lake, and visit the souvenir shop.
When youâre sailing back to Queenstown on the TSS Earnslaw, make sure to make your way to the bottom deck where you can visit the museum that has some awesome information about the ship.Â
You can book the Walter Peak farm tour here.
#2 Walter Peak Horse Trek and TSS Earnslaw Cruise
đ˘ Book your cruise and horse trek here â° Time: 3.5 hours đ¸ Cost: $219 NZD âď¸ Rating: 4.8 out of 5 â ď¸ Please note that this tour is likely to sell out â so if you know you’re going, it is good to book it in advance!
After sailing across Lake Wakatipu and you arrive at the lakefront property on this guided tour youâll be introduced to a horse and a tour guide!
For about 45 minutes, youâll travel on horseback through New Zealand farmland. The rolling hills, greenery, and farm animals are the ideal New Zealand experience.
Itâs a very relaxing horseback ride which is great for a date or for anyone who loves horses!Â
Youâll truly get to experience the best of New Zealand’s countryside and get to see what this part of ‘the land of the long white cloud’ (Aotearoa) is all about!
One thing which is quite unique about this tour is that youâll ride to a viewpoint that offers an incredible view overlooking Lake Wakatipu (the only one of these tours that goes to this viewpoint).
After the horse ride youâll go back to the homestead restaurant and have morning or afternoon tea.
The view of Lake Whakatipu (Whakatipu Wai-MÄori) from the restaurant is amazing as well. Itâs lakeside and on a nice warm day, you can sit outside and enjoy the sun while taking in the view of the lake.
Before heading back on the TSS Earnslaw youâll have a bit of time to enjoy the farm, check out the shop, and walk around the local garden that belongs to the property!
To finish the tour youâll sail back on the Earnslaw to Queenstown where the trip ends.
You can book the Walter Peak Horse Trek tour here .
#3 TSS Earnslaw Dinner Cruise to Walter Peak Farm
đ˘ Book your cruise & dinner tour here â° Time: 4 hours đ¸ Cost: $189 NZD âď¸ Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
This is the tour that we did as we were looking for a unique dining experience in Queenstown!
We actually got the trip as a delayed Christmas present from Jo’s dad and we thought it was such a nice gift. We got to spend time together while enjoying a delicious dinner and the beautiful surroundings.
Itâs a nice tour if youâre looking for a unique date idea or you just want to experience something a bit special.
We really enjoyed taking the TSS Earnslaw across the lake and getting out of the busy-ness of Queenstown for a few hours.
Once you disembark the Earnslaw youâll be assigned to your table where youâll be able to enjoy a nice glass of wine, beer, or drink of your choice (not included in the price).
Thereâs a delicious buffet that offers a wide variety of BBQ dishes and salads! When we went there was anything from salad, soup, potatoes, etc. to pork, meat, chicken, fish and seafood. It was a serious feast!
Oh, and did we mention all the delicious desserts!?
You have a decent amount of time to enjoy the buffet and all the yummy food before heading to the next part of the tour.
This next part is a local New Zealand experience where youâll learn all about sheep herding and even see it on full display!
We were not expecting this part of the tour as we hadn’t looked too much into the details.
It was such a neat experience to see the connection between the farmer and the dog and how they heard the sheep down the mountain.
We wrote a whole blog post on the Dinner Cruise to Walter Peak Farm here where you can learn more about what the whole trip is about.
You can also book the same tour we did here .

Walter Peak
A commanding 1800m high, Walter Peak is regularly visited by the TSS Earnslaw steamship as it ferries passengers to the base of the mountain to experience Walter Peak High Country Farm. Legend has it adventurous pioneers William Rees and Nicholas Von Tunzelman flipped a coin for which side of the lake to settle on in the late 1850s. Rees got the Queenstown side and Von Tunzelman Walter Peak. In the late 1880s, the Mackenzie family took over the region and farmed the area for 80 years, establishing the Colonelâs Homestead in 1908. Unfortunately, the fire damaged the iconic building in 1977, and it was then carefully reconstructed.
Fast forward to 2014, when Real NZ initiated an ambitious conservation effort known as the Walter Peak Land Restoration Project . This endeavour began after the acquisition of the farmland surrounding Colonelâs Homestead. In an ecological feat, the project involved clearing 155 hectares of invasive non-native trees and weeds, creating space for the restoration of pockets of native bush. Additionally, a scenic walkway was meticulously crafted, offering visitors a mesmerizing journey through this revitalized landscape. Today, this stunning route not only allows visitors to immerse themselves in the rich history of the high country farm but also presents the opportunity to enjoy a leisurely ride aboard the iconic TSS Earnslaw, making for a truly unforgettable experience.

Moscow Metro
The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided toursâ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalinâs regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as âa peopleâs palaceâ. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues⌠Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.
What is the kremlin in russia?
The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.
And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.
During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.
There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

TSS Earnslaw Vintage Steamship, 1912
About the TSS Earnslaw
The TSS Earnslaw is an integral part of Queenstownâs pioneering history and to this day a Queenstown icon.Â
She was commissioned by New Zealand Railways to service the communities around Lake Wakatipu. Launched in the same year as the Titanic, the TSS Earnslawâs maiden voyage was on 18 October 1912.Â
Soon known as The Lady of the Lake, she provided an essential link between the isolated farming communities along the lake and the outside world. At 48 metres long, she was the biggest boat on the Lake and carried passengers, sheep, cattle, mail and supplies.Â
Nearly scrapped in 1968, she was rescued and purchased by RealNZ and put to work once again carrying passengers around the Lake. Since then the TSS Earnslaw has been painstakingly restored to its original condition. Everything you see is pretty much like it was 100 years ago, making her one of the most unique experiences in the world.
The TSS Earnslaw has featured in several movies including a cameo in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull as an Amazon River Boat. Parts of the trawler SS Venture in Peter Jacksonâs King Kong were inspired by the TSS Earnslaw. Famous composer Ron Goodwin composed a piece of music inspired by the rhythm of the TSS Earnslawâs engines.
About Walter Peak High Country Farm
Walter Peak High Country Farm, on the western shores of Lake Wakatipu, is steeped in history. Its sheltered bays were used as camping sites by Maori travelling to the Mararoa and Oreti Rivers on Moa hunting and pounamu (greenstone) gathering expeditions.
European settlement commenced in the 1860s with initial farming attempts by Von Tunzelman. Stock deaths, snowstorms and lack of money eventually forced him off the land.
Following a quick succession of owners, Walter Peak Station was taken over in the late 1880s by the Mackenzies. This family is credited with developing many of the principles of successful high country farming during their 80 years working the property.
At its peak, the station was one of New Zealandâs most famous with 170,000 acres, 40,000 sheep and up to 50 fulltime employees. The original homestead block of Walter Peak Station is now known as Walter Peak High Country Farm.
Over time various permanent homes were established and these included the Colonelâs Homestead with its beautiful lakeside gardens. Originally built in 1902, it was carefully reconstructed in 1977 following an accidental fire.

Everything from the steamer and meal to the sheepdog presentation was really enjoyable. A lovely setting complete with a big waving welcome as we came ashore. The staff were all friendly and the organization went smoothly. The BBQ meal was delicious and there were many vegetarian options and even a dessert buffet with luscious sticky toffee pudding. Really fun time. Loved this tour! sherischrdr via Trip Advisor
A must have experience while in Queenstown and a great piece of history in one. The boat ride is relaxing and exhilarating at the same time. The view of the lake with mountains around it helps to feel one with nature. The steam engine which you can see, feel and experience brings the history to life. The farm and dog show brings you closer to New Zealand spirit and shows you what you may never see especially for city people. And for dessert they have a great option for an afternoon tea with a delicious selection of treats and drinks. Returning from this trip always feels surreal. Andrey K, Via Google
