Tour the United Nations Headquarters in NYC

nyc un visit

Ben Hider/Getty Images

Strolling through the fascinating corridors of international diplomacy at Manhattan's United Nations Headquarters is an educational journey not to be missed. Interestingly, while set on the east side of Midtown Manhattan, fronting the East River, the U.N.'s 18-acre parcel of land is considered "international territory" that belongs to members of the United Nations and is, therefore, not technically part of the United States. An hour-long tour here offers enriching insight into the important work of the United Nations organization.

What Will I See?

The best (and only) way to see the inner workings of the United Nations Headquarters is via guided tour. Approximately hour-long guided tours are offered Monday through Friday from 9:30 am to 4:45 pm. Tours start in the General Assembly building and afford a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the organization, including a visit to the General Assembly Hall. The General Assembly Hall is the largest room in the United Nations, with seating capacity for more than 1,800 people. In this room, representatives of all 193 Member States gather to discuss pressing issues that require international cooperation.

Tours also take in the Security Council Chamber, as well as the Trusteeship Council Chamber and the Economic and Social Council Chamber (note that access may be limited to rooms if meetings are in progress). En route, tour participants will learn more about the history and structure of the organization, including the scope of issues that the United Nations regularly deals with, including human rights, peace and security, disarmament, and more.

Note that a kid-friendly Children's Tour, geared towards children ages 5 to 12, is also available for booking with advance online purchase; all participating kids must be accompanied by an adult or chaperone.

What Is the History?

The United Nations Headquarters complex was completed in New York City in 1952 on land donated to the city by John D. Rockefeller, Jr. The buildings contain chambers for the Security Council and General Assembly, as well as offices for the Secretary-General and other international civil servants. The complex received an extensive overhaul in celebration of the United Nations' 70th anniversary in 2015.

Where Is It Located?

Fronting the East River, the United Nations Headquarters is located on 1st Avenue between East 42nd and East 48th Streets; the main visitors' entrance is at 46th Street and 1st Avenue. Note that all visitors need to first get a security pass to visit the complex; passes are issued at the check-in office at 801 1st Avenue (at the corner of 45th Street).

Guided tours are available on weekdays only; the UN Visitors Lobby with exhibits and UN Visitor Center remains open on weekends (though not in January and February). It's highly recommended to book your tickets for guided tours online in advance; a limited number of tickets may be available for purchase at the United Nations on the day of your visit. Note that children under 5 years of age are not permitted on the tours. (Tip: Plan to arrive at least an hour in advance of your scheduled tour to allow for time to go through the security screening.) There is a Visitors Café serving food and beverages (including coffee) on-site.

United Nations Guided Tours Celebrates 70 years in New York City

The United Nations Department of Global Communications celebrates today the seventieth anniversary of its Guided Tours operation, the same day that the doors of the Organization’s Headquarters in New York City were opened to the public in 1952.

To mark the occasion, an exhibit on the history and the role of the tour guides as “Ambassadors to the Public” is on view in the United Nations Visitors Lobby, available also in digital format.  The United Nations Postal Administration has issued a special commemorative stamp sheet for purchase at the stamp shop.

For seven decades, visitors from around the world have toured United Nations Headquarters, giving them the opportunity to see, hear and feel diplomacy in action.  Escorted by guides well-versed in international affairs, visitors walk through corridors buzzing with diplomats and international civil servants, learn about pressing geopolitical issues, and while seated in the General Assembly Hall, reflect on our world’s need for international cooperation.

“Our multilingual tour guides have been the face and voice of the United Nations to over 42 million visitors from around the world,” said United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.  “We celebrate their seventieth anniversary and honour their vital ongoing mission to enhance understanding of the essential work of the United Nations.”

The one-hour Guided Tour is conducted in 13 languages by a team of tour guides from 17 countries.  As per tradition, the tour guides have been clothed by leading designers, from Edith Head, Christian Dior and Benetton in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, to Elie Tahari from 2017 to the present.

Access to a multi-media kit about the United Nations Guided Tours can be found here ; and the digital version of the seventieth anniversary exhibit at:  www.un.org/en/exhibits/ambassadors-to-the-public .  During the Unit’s anniversary month of November, visitors can also request a United Nations tour, or an interview with a tour guide in a foreign language, Monday through Friday, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., by reaching out to the media contacts below.

United Nations Guided Tours offer an exciting opportunity to discover United Nations Headquarters on a brief journey through the corridors of international diplomacy, all while admiring the unique collection of artworks on display in the United Nations compound.  During the hour-long tour, visitors will learn from a multilingual tour guide about the history of the Organization, as well as the work of its 193 Member States in the areas of peace and security, development and human rights .  Guided Tours are also available at United Nations Offices in Geneva, Nairobi and Vienna.  For more information, please visit www.un.org/visit .

About the Museum

For those willing to brave the long lines at security, a visit to the headquarters of the United Nations is one of the great experiences that New York City has to offer. The best way to experience the U.N. as a visitor is on a guided tour--but these require advance registration and limited availability can mean planning several weeks or months in advance. Fortunately, the U.N. can be visited outside of tour--though you will not have access to the Assembly Hall. The U.N. hosts several small exhibitions exploring topics of human rights and social justice that are free to visit.

What You Will See

Tours of the United Nations are offered several times a day in many languages and bring visitors into some of the most important diplomatic spaces on the planet. However, the ticketed tours can fill up fast. If you do not manage to join a tour, you can still visit the U.N.'s gallery. The free space is used to display selections from the United Nations Art Collection, as well as rotating temporary exhibits which examine issues such as modern slavery, sustainable development, human rights, and the history of the United Nations itself.

Why You Should Go

With over 1 million visitors a year, the headquarters of the United Nations is rightly one of the most visited sites in New York City. However, few people treat is as a compelling and contemporary gallery space. The security lines can be daunting and summer crowds can be offputting, but the gallery and museum spaces inside the U.N. reward those willing to brave the throngs of tour busses.

How to visit United Nations headquarters in New York (for free)

by Dan Miller | Nov 24, 2016 | all , family travel | 6 comments

(READ MORE: Most Traveled People – tracking places you’ve been )

Where is the United Nations headquarters in NYC?

United Nations Headquarters is in Manhattan (New York City), on the east side of the island.  The UN headquarters building is located off of 1st Avenue between 42nd and 47th streets

visit-united-nations-headquarters-map

While the skyscraper that you THINK is the United Nations headquarters (technically the “United Nations Secretariat Building” is between 42nd and 43rd street, the actual visitor’s entrance into United Nations headquarters building is opposite 45th street.

There is no parking at the UN headquarters building – the UN website recommends walking or taking public transportation. We were staying at the Sheraton Times Square New York , so we walked over.  One advantage of walking is that on your way to visit the United Nations Headquarters, you’ll pass by many countries’ diplomatic missions, so it makes a good game of “spot the flags”

You will see an entrance building on the east side of 1st Avenue opposite 45th street.  It looks like this

united-nations-headquarters-visit-guards

If you look closely in the picture, you can see 2 armed guards in front of the UN building who will not let you in… unless…. you get a visitor’s badge.

Getting a (free) visitor’s pass to visit United Nations headquarters

Unless you work there, you will need a Visitor Pass to visit the UN Headquarters building.  The Visitor’s Check-In office for the United Nations headquarters building is (conveniently) right across the street from United Nations Headquarters, on the northwest corner of 45th Street and 1st Avenue (801 First Avenue is the address)

un-headquarters-visitors-check-in

The UN website suggests arriving to check-in at least one hour before any scheduled tours you might have to go through the security process.  The security check in building opens at 9 a.m. Monday through Friday and at 10 a.m. on weekends.  Every visitor 18 and older needs to show government ID (original; no photocopies) in order to get a visitor pass.  The UN website does not mention this, but there is a sign in the building stating that your identification must be in English

visit-united-nations-building-id-requirements

My daughter (10 years old at the time) did not need to show ID but also got a visitor’s pass / bracelet.  Children under 5 years of age are not permitted to visit the United Nations headquarters building (supposedly for “security” but I’m not sure I understand that)

You’ll get a badge that looks something like this

visit-un-headquarters-building-security-badge

and then you can cross back over 1st Avenue to visit the UN headquarters building

When to visit the United Nations Headquarters building in New York

The United Nations headquarters building is open most days from 9 a.m. (weekdays) or 10 a.m. (weekends) to 5 p.m.  Although the UN building itself closes at 5 p.m. they stop letting people inside at 4:30

  • Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm
  • Saturday & Sunday from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm.
  • All visitors must exit the building by 5:30pm

Visiting the UN headquarters building is not allowed on certain holidays – check the UN website for more information.  Another thing to note is that guided tours are only offered on weekdays, while the United Nations headquarters building lobby, shops and Post Office are open on weekends (except January and February)

How to visit United Nations headquarters for free

There are United Nations tours that are guided tours (but only on weekdays; see above).  The current price for United Nations tours is $22 for adults, $15 for “Students” (ages 13+) and Seniors (60+) and $13 for children ages 5-12 (Children under 5 are not permitted on UN tours or in the UN headquarters building at all).

That’s well and good, but we want to visit United Nations headquarters for FREE!

When my daughter and I were at the United Nations headquarters building, we decided not to pay for a UN tour and instead just visit the building.  The good news is that the lobby, shops, Post Office and atrium are open for free and even on weekends (when there are no UN guided tours)

We were there on a Sunday morning – it was super empty and I felt that it was a good time for general reflection.  The atrium in the United Nations headquarters building in NYC is very large and has lots of information about the United Nations itself, UNICEF, and other

I enjoyed this picture of former UN secretary general Boutrous Boutrous Ghali ( thank you Animaniacs !)

The shops were closed because we were there pretty early in the morning, but we spent an hour or so looking at the different displays both inside

visit-united-nations-headquarters-new-york-displays

and the sculptures outside the United Nations headquarters building

un-headquarters-outside-sculptures

Definitely worth a trip to United Nations headquarters if you’re visiting NYC.

Here are 3 tricks to visit the United Nations Headquarters building in New York City. Before you leave NYC, make sure to...

Have you been to the United Nations headquarters building in New York City?  If you took the UN Tour, was it worth it?  Or would you recommend just visiting the lobby and atrium for free?

Do you have to be in a tour to visit here?

Dan Miller

No. We went in without a tour, but I’d imagine if you’re on the tour, you may have better access to things. For my purposes, just walking around the “open” part of the building was more than enough

Once on the street, you can walk along 42nd Street to 1st Avenue and then walk north 4 blocks to the Visitor Entrance.

If you don't want to walk from Grand Central, you can take the M42 bus heading east on 42nd Street. It is a free transfer from the subway.

TIP:  You may find our posts on  navigating the NYC subway  and choosing the right subway pass helpful.

By bus:   The crosstown M42 bus heading east. The Uptown M15 bus along 1st Avenue stops in front of the U.N.

By ferry: The East River ferry has a stop at 34th Street and 1st Avenue. It costs the same as the subway and you will have fantastic views during your ride. See our post about the  East River Ferry .

By car: We advise you to not drive to the UN, as there is no visitor parking and traffic in Midtown is very heavy.

When you arrive

Be sure that everyone in your group who is 18 years or older (and unaccompanied children 12 years and older) has their government-issued photo ID, such as a passport or driver's license.

Go to the Visitor Check-in Office at 801 First Avenue at 45th Street, across the street from the UN.

For 9:30 am and 9:45 am ticket holders, please be advised that the Check-in Office opens at 9:00 am.

Because you must go through a security screening, which may take some time, the UN asks that you arrive  an hour prior to your tour so you will not be late.

You won't be able to bring in big bags or tripods. We have great suggestions for where to store your bags for under $6.

Note:  If you are more than 15 minutes late your reservation may not be honored.

For more information about what to expect when you arrive, see the UN website .

Good to Know

  • Tours take place during working hours, so groups are asked to keep quiet while walking in between stops.
  • There are no restrooms along the tour route, so take care of any needs before the tour begins.
  • TIP: If you have bags and would like to store them somewhere during your visit to the UN, look at our post on  where to store luggage in NYC .

What you can and cannot bring

The UN takes security seriously. Check their long list of prohibited items here .

You CAN bring the following:

  • battery-operated electronic devices, as well as medical devices
  • cameras, video recorders, or any type of recording device

Biden to visit nyc for unga, fund-raisers next week.

In the city, Biden is set to attend at least two fund-raisers: an event at a Broadway theater on Monday and a pricey shindig with New York lawyers on Wednesday, according to notices for the events.

Tickets for the Monday event, branded “Broadway for Biden,” are set at $250 to $7,500, and tickets for the Wednesday fund-raiser, “Lawyers for Biden,” start at $3,300. Deadline previously reported on Biden’s expected visit to the Theater District.

The exact locations of the fund-raisers were not clear. And it was unclear if Mayor Adams or Gov. Hochul would attend either.

The White House did not immediately reply to a request for comment. Spokesmen for Adams and Hochul said they did not yet know if the mayor or governor would attend events with Biden, but that they were aware of planning.

Adams and Hochul, two moderate Democrats, have blamed Biden for the city’s migrant crisis , declaring he has not given New York adequate support as the city buckles under the strain of caring for about 60,000 asylum seekers.

The president, who was headed to Alaska on Monday during the city’s 9/11 ceremonies, has seemed to keep the migrant crisis at arm’s length, addressing it sparingly in public. He did not meet with Hochul two weeks ago when she visited the White House to appeal for more migrant aid.

The meeting, which came three days after Biden’s Homeland Security Department criticized New York City’s handling of the crisis in a two-page letter, produced vital commitments from the White House, according to Hochul’s office.

But the governor has said the federal response continues to fall short, and she has demanded that Washington expedite approval of work permits for asylum seekers.

“This crisis originated with the federal government, and it must be resolved through the federal government,” Hochul said in a speech last month.

Hochul, who is expected to serve as a campaign surrogate for Biden’s reelection bid in 2024, has still taken a gentler tone on the White House than Adams, who declared in the spring that Biden had “failed” New York City; the mayor was later dropped from the surrogate squad.

At the outset of his mayoralty, Adams tied himself closely to the president, calling himself the “Biden of Brooklyn.”

After Adams’ primary election victory — but before his ascension to mayor — Biden invited the then-Brooklyn borough president to the White House in July 2021 to discuss public safety. And in his first month as mayor, Adams received a pep talk from Biden after delivering a major speech detailing his plans to halt growing gun violence, according to the White House.

But the relationship seems to have frayed due to Adams’ frustration over the more than 110,000 asylum seekers who have arrived in the city since spring 2022, of which 60,000 remain under the city’s care. Many of the migrants fled political and economic upheaval in Venezuela and have been unable to quickly secure work papers in the city.

From left, President Joe Biden, Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator Deanne Criswell, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, and New York City mayor Eric Adams attend a meeting at the FEMA Region 2 office in New York, Thursday, Sept. 22, 2022.

Adams and Hochul, whose administrations have engaged in several rounds of sniping and recriminations over the crisis , have remained chummy in public appearances and maintained they are aligned on myriad issues.

But Biden, whose poll numbers are plummeting in New York State , has largely receded from view locally.

Last month, Adams told CNN he had not spoken with Biden in 2023.

Hank Sheinkopf, a Democratic political consultant, said that it is likely Biden will try to dodge Adams next week, but that it might be inevitable that they wind up together at some point.

“Adams will want the photo,” Sheinkopf said. “Biden probably won’t.”

Adams has complained more than once about the "word police" being too exacting on him for some of his public comments, and on Tuesday, he appeared to relate to Hochul's predicament.

Like many people, 25-year-old Jane August needed to find something to do after she was laid off during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I need to leave the house,” she recalled thinking. “I need to feel some cultural enrichment that is not in my bed watching Netflix.”

So now, the Brooklynite is on a mission to visit every museum in New York City.

Jane August at the Museum of the city of new york

“I think living in New York City is such a privilege of having access to so much history and culture, that not taking advantage of it kind of feels like a disservice to yourself,” August told The Post.

But the go-getter didn’t want to visit just one museum in New York City — she wanted to visit them all.

Some she had never visited before, including the Statue of Liberty Museum , thinking they were overrated tourist attractions, and others she had never even heard of — the Woodside Heights Art Museum , for one.

Now, she’s a fan of them all. Nothing is overrated in her eyes.

Jane August at the Museum of Broadway

“Part of the project has been me realizing that most of these big museums we assume are overrated, actually aren’t. They all serve a unique purpose,” August said.

“Being New Yorkers, we’re so over tourists [attractions], but then you realize, ‘Oh, there’s a reason they come to this stuff.’ Now I understand why people from all over the world come to these museums and institutions.”

But where to even begin?

The music-venue worker has always been a goal-oriented person and loves lists, so in 2021, she sought out a roundup of all the museums in NYC and began checking them off, one by one.

Jane August at the Hall of Science

That’s when August discovered that none of the “comprehensive” lists of museums in the city seemed accurate, especially because many of them included places that she didn’t consider museums — like the Museum of Ice Cream .

“I think a museum should have some kind of artistic or historical information or enrichment,” August explained — and not just be a “backdrop for Instagram.”

So August decided to create her own list.

There are currently 190 museums on her agenda — 115 of which she has already visited and crossed off. And in true Gen Z fashion, August began to document her journey on TikTok to keep herself accountable and inspire others to get out there.

She’s now become TikTok’s “museum girl.”

Jane's self-created museum list

“I don’t have an art history background. I’m not from this museum art world, and I think that’s something that has felt really inaccessible to a lot of New Yorkers,” the content creator said.

“So being able to show that these museums are cool and fun and accessible is really important.”

She also recently started a companion podcast — titled “The Next Stop Is … “ — that expands on her artistic endeavor.

Jane August’s NYC Museum Guide

  • Most Unique: The Living Museum , Queens Village
  • Most Underrated: The Society of Illustrators , the Nicholas Roerich Museum and the Museum at FIT

  • Most Interactive: National Museum of Mathematics
  • Best View: Whitney Museum of American Art
  • Best View of the Whole City: The Panorama of the City of New York at Queens Museum
  • Best Location: South Street Seaport Museum

“I get to meet so many cool people throughout my adventures and could never figure out how to incorporate those people and conversations into my TikTok videos,” she said. “My podcast allows me to have longer conversations with artists and tastemakers about the city and beyond.”

August realized that visiting museums is also a great way to explore new parts of the city. After spending a day in Staten Island, it has become one of her favorite boroughs.

Jane August at the Brant art foundation

“I’m going to lots of neighborhoods that I’ve never been to,” she confessed, adding that “it’s kind of fun to explore” that aspect of her travels.

August still has 75 museums to check off her list, but so far she thinks The Living Museum in Queens Village is the most unique; the Society of Illustrators , the Nicholas Roerich Museum and the Museum at FIT are the most underrated; and the Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration, Guggenheim , American Museum of Natural History and Whitney may seem overrated — but they’re worth a visit.

“There’s a lot more to do than eating and drinking in New York City.”

Pope Francis may visit United States in September after UN invitation

Pope Francis to UN general assembly Sept 25 2015 Credit LOR

By Andrea Gagliarducci

Rome Newsroom, Apr 25, 2024 / 07:22 am

Pope Francis is reportedly considering returning to the United States in September to speak before the United Nations General Assembly.

The news was initially reported by the French Catholic newspaper La Croix and has not yet been officially confirmed by the Vatican. A source from the Vatican Secretariat of State, meanwhile, told CNA this week that “a formal invitation has arrived from Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, and Pope Francis seems inclined to respond positively.”

If the New York trip occurs, the pope would visit the United Nations during its “Summit of the Future,” which the international body will convene from Sept. 22–23.

The possible trip to the United States could change the pope’s already-busy September travel schedule. The Holy See Press Office has announced that Pope Francis will be in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Timor Leste, and Singapore from Sept. 2–13.

Pope Francis is also expected at the end of September in Belgium, where he is scheduled to celebrate the 600th anniversary of the University of Louvain, which has been divided into two different linguistic entities since the 1960s. The Holy Father told Mexican television network Televisa last December that he intended to travel to Belgium in 2024.

According to a source familiar with the planning of papal trips, Pope Francis’ trip to Louvain could be postponed to 2025. The postponement of the journey would leave room at the end of September for the visit to the United Nations.

During his planned stay in Belgium, Pope Francis will also celebrate Mass at the national shrine of Koelkenberg. There are also rumors that the pontiff will stop in Luxembourg, one of the small nations favored by the pope for trips to Europe. Luxembourg officials have denied the visit, but the Vatican Secretariat of State has indicated the trip is possible.

The September summit’s objective is to strengthen the structures of the United Nations and global “governance” to face more fully the “new and old challenges” of the coming years, the U.N. has said.

The meeting will lead a “pact for the future” to advance rapidly toward realizing the U.N.’s “sustainable development goals.”

In a meeting with students in April, Pope Francis described the summit as “an important event,” with the Holy Father urging students to help ensure the plan “becomes concrete and is implemented through processes and actions for change.”

Pope Francis, who is 87, has undergone two surgeries in the last four years and is under regular medical screening. A planned trip to Abu Dhabi to participate in the COP28 meeting was canceled last December due to health reasons.

The pope was last in the United States in 2015, during which he also appeared before the United Nations.

Two totally burnt out cars, one upside down, illuminatewd with orange light, form part of an exhibit

‘We are showing the world what people do’: grim relics of Hamas attack go on display in New York

Tents, debris and personal items from the Nova festival, where 364 people died on 7 October, form shocking exhibit on Wall Street

While New York was preoccupied with student protests over the US’s support of Israel’s war in Gaza last week, another aspect of how the city with the largest Jewish population outside Israel is coming to terms with bloodshed in the Middle East was being prepared.

On Wall Street, a gruelling exhibition has opened detailing the horrific attack on the Nova music festival by Hamas terrorists on 7 October , in which 364 people were murdered, many wounded and 44 taken hostage.

It is a walk-through recreation of hours of unimaginable brutality by the attackers, containing the tents, bedding and possessions of those at the festival, alongside jubilant Hamas videos of the attacks, as well as survivor and rescue worker testimony in the aftermath.

The items include handbags, burnt-out cars, missing sneakers, bullet-riddled bathroom stalls, the stage from which DJs played their sets, and some evidence of ritualised sexual violence.

It concludes with a room of photographs of the young people who were killed, and the declaration: “We will dance again.”

A room lit with dim light and candles in the centre of the floor, with softly lit photographs of people around the walls

“It’s an invitation to feel, touch, smell the Nova community,” said the exhibition’s creative director, Reut Feingold.

“It’s not only the tragedy, but also the life before 7 October. We want people to go through the journey, and to feel the community. Nova is about hope, and it was important that it was just authentic things from the festival, no decorations. No virtual reality. Just the truth.”

Feingold’s husband, Yoni, told the Observer that their aim was to widen the story of the event.

“Hundreds of people from all over the world, DJs from Brazil, Europe and America, came to celebrate love, peace and brotherhood. It could have happened anywhere, the viciousness, and we feel that the world doesn’t really know what happened. These people weren’t soldiers: they had come to dance.”

Feingold added: “The festival had nothing to do with politics.

“It was about music and unconditional love.”

But it is almost impossible to view the exhibition without reference to what came before and after.

The lost shoes, clothes and purses left behind when the festivalgoers fled is reminiscent of the displays at Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Yoni confirmed that when the exhibits were shown in Tel Aviv they had given some people a sense of the Holocaust.

after newsletter promotion

But there is no acknowledgment of what has come since in Gaza, where an estimated 34,000 people have died and a million have been displaced in the Israel Defense Forces’ effort to root out Hamas terrorists and recover the hostages taken on 7 October.

A young woman stands with her arms folded looking at a row of yellow portable toilets, some of which have fully or partly fallen over

“It’s very, very complicated, and these are things we are not dealing with here,” Yoni said. “We made a decision to show the world what people can do. There’s a denial, and people are just trying to wipe it out as if it never happened, just like the Holocaust.”

Unlike older terrorist attacks, the amount of mobile phone footage, WhatsApp video and text messages, from both attackers and victims, makes 7 October an event that is unlikely to fade quickly. Observers point out that the 9/11 attacks are only remembered through TV broadcasts and messages left on answering machines. There is comparatively little coming from Gaza , but what there is – often via TikTok – is similarly sickening.

“There was never a situation that was so photographed in real time,” said Yoni of the events of 7 October. “So it is going to be there, and we have a purpose to bring our people back home. This is not an imaginary world.”

Questions have been raised about how much is necessary to show. In one room, the curators display a pair of men’s shorts shot through the crotch with bullets.

The Feingolds say people do not have the right to their own conception of what happened. “You have to see everything to be educated,” said Yoni.

Kristi Noem’s New Book Falsely Says She Met Kim Jong-un

“I’m sure he underestimated me,” Ms. Noem writes of the North Korean leader in her forthcoming book. A spokesman said the error would be corrected.

Kristi Noem is pictured from the side while speaking at a lectern with a glass top.

By Chris Cameron

  • May 3, 2024

The new book by Gov. Kristi Noem of South Dakota, a biography that will be released on Tuesday, will be corrected to remove a false anecdote about her meeting Kim Jong-un, the North Korean leader, a spokesman for Ms. Noem said on Friday.

Ms. Noem, who has been widely talked about as a potential running mate for former President Donald J. Trump, has already spent the last week defending a grisly excerpt from the book in which she describes killing a family dog .

Ms. Noem’s new book also includes an error about when a phone call with Nikki Haley took place. That will be corrected in future editions of the book, too, said Ian Fury, the chief of communications for Ms. Noem.

“It was brought to our attention that the upcoming book ‘No Going Back’ has two small errors,” Mr. Fury said. “This has been communicated to the ghostwriter and editor. Kim Jong-un was included in a list of world leaders and shouldn’t have been.”

In the book, a copy of which was obtained by The New York Times ahead of its official publication on May 7, Ms. Noem mentions the meeting with Mr. Kim when writing about her eight years in Congress as South Dakota’s sole representative, in a passage about her role as a member of the House Armed Services Committee.

“I had the chance to travel to many countries to meet with world leaders — some who wanted our help, and some who didn’t,” Ms. Noem writes. “I remember when I met with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un. I’m sure he underestimated me, having no clue about my experience staring down little tyrants (I’d been a children’s pastor, after all). Dealing with foreign leaders takes resolve, preparation, and determination.”

Mr. Fury did not respond to a question about whom Ms. Noem could have been referring to, if not Mr. Kim.

The conversation that Ms. Noem describes having with Ms. Haley, the former South Carolina governor who dropped out of the Republican presidential primary in March, suggests that Ms. Haley had threatened her because they were both prominent Republican women.

Ms. Noem describes the call as starting with Ms. Haley offering to mentor her during her first term as governor of South Dakota, but then saying: “I’ve heard many good things about you. But when I do hear bad things, I will make sure that you know. I’ve enjoyed talking to you. We will visit soon. Goodbye.”

Ms. Noem then recounts the conversation with her secretary, writing that she said: “I’m pretty sure I was just threatened by Nikki Haley. It was clear that she wanted me to know that there was only room for one Republican woman in the spotlight. It was weird.”

Chaney Denton, a spokeswoman for Ms. Haley, said Ms. Noem’s story was inaccurate.

“Nikki has long called and written notes supporting other women when they go through challenging times,” Ms. Denton said in a statement. “She called Governor Noem in 2020 to encourage her when she was criticized for keeping her state open during Covid. How she would twist that into a threat is just plain weird.”

Future editions of the book will correct the timeline, clarifying that Ms. Noem spoke with Nikki Haley in 2020 and met with her in 2021. Mr. Fury did not specify other changes to the anecdote, in which Ms. Noem writes that the implication she got from the call was that “I’m the alpha female here, and you should know your place.” She also wrote of Ms. Haley: “I actually felt a little sad for her.”

The memoir, seemingly intended to boost Ms. Noem’s profile as Mr. Trump gets closer to picking a running mate, seeks to play up her bona fides as a Trump loyalist.

She boasts of defending Mr. Trump in a speech the day after the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, “regardless of the fact that what unfolded on January 6 was undeniably ugly.”

But much of the attention has so far centered on her shooting of the dog, Cricket, to her daughter’s distress. Ms. Noem appeared on the Fox News program hosted by Sean Hannity on Wednesday to defend her conduct, saying that she included the story in the book to illustrate the “tough, challenging decisions that I’ve had to make throughout my life.”
