Heidiland: A Gorgeous Day Trip from Zurich

Heidiland in Maienfeld, Switzerland is an idyllic day trip from Zurich, equally perfect for fans of literary travel and those looking for amazing Alps views.

Maienfeld, Switzerland is the real-life Alpine village that inspired the classic children’s novel, Heidi, by Johanna Spyri:

“The pretty little Swiss town of Maienfeld lies at the foot of a mountain range, whose grim rugged peaks tower high above the valley below.” The opening line of the Heidi by Johanna Spyri

Heidi is one of the most-read books around the world , translated into more than 50 languages. For those visiting the Swiss Alps, you can actually experience Heidi’s magical Switzerland for yourself in Maienfeld, where a recreation of Heidi’s village is a tourist attraction equal parts beautiful, educational, and interactive.

Heidiland was one of the top highlights during my family’s trip to Lake Constance and the Swiss Alps. Read on for all the details you need to know to make the trip to Heididorf.

Who wrote Heidi ?

Heidi was written by Swiss author Johanna Spyri . It was first published in 1881 in the German language and became an immediate bestseller. In fact, Heidi became so popular that it is one of the most widely translated books after the Bible and the Quran .

Heidi author Johanna Spyri Heidi's Switzerland Maienfeld Hedidorf Zurich day trip

Growing up, Johanna Spyri spent several summers in the Swiss village of Maienfeld and was so inspired by the natural beauty of the region and the slow-paced traditional way of life that she wrote Heidi to capture both.

Heidi was so successful that Spyri became a national legend and very beloved in Switzerland. As much as Heidiland is a tribute to the book, it is also equal parts tribute to the Swiss Alps’ traditional way of life and tribute to Spyri herself. Heidi’s Switzerland has found its way into the hearts of so many readers around the world.

Fun fact for any aspiring authors, Johanna Spyri is one example of a successful author who didn’t begin writing until later in her life; her first story was published when she was in her early 50s. (Just goes to show there’s no one formula for writing success. Take, for example, Mary Shelley, who wrote Frankenstein at 19 ).

Related: Enjoy learning interesting bits of literary history? I bet you didn’t know these 13 surprising Thomas Hardy facts .

What is Heidi about?

Briefly, Johanna Spyri’s Heidi is about a young orphan girl named Heidi who is sent to live with her grandfather in the Swiss Alps because her Aunt Dete can no longer take care of her. Heidi’s grandfather is antisocial, reclusive, and feared throughout the town of Maienfeld. He no longer goes into town, choosing to remain in the mountains with his animals.

Heidi is a charmingly optimistic orphan with curly hair (a sort of combination between Orphan Annie and Anne of Green Gables ) whose exuberance charms and softens her grandfather’s coarseness. She falls in love with life in the Alps — the fresh mountain air, the goats, her grandfather, and her new friend, Peter, the mischievous young goat herder.

Heididorf Switzerland Heidi by Johanna Spyri Maienfeld literary travel destination where does Heidi take place

When Heidi is sent to Frankfurt to be a companion to a disabled girl, she feels herself withering away in the city until she is returned to Maienfeld’s mountain air and the company of her grandfather.

“I’d a million times rather be with Grandfather on the mountain than anywhere else in the world.” Heidi by Johanna Spyri

Heidi is a simple, wholesome, and optimistic book that emphasizes Christian values, but it isn’t sentimental to the point of becoming burdensome. It’s a book that makes you want to get outside more and hold tight to those people you love the most. And it absolutely makes you want to transport yourself into Heidi’s Switzerland.

Other characters in Heidi include Peter, who cares for the goats in the traditional Alps way, his blind grandmother, and Clara, the kind, disabled girl Heidi is sent to live with in Frankfurt, Germany. While Heidi desperately wishes to get back to Switzerland and to her grandfather, she and Clara form a close friendship during her time there.

“‘No one is sad here [in the Alps],’ she told him, ‘only in Frankfurt.’” Heidi to the doctor (this Heidi quote made me laugh)

Fun fact : Although many picture Heidi as a rosy-cheeked girl with blonde curls (as played by Shirley Temple), the Heidi of the novel is not blonde; she is actually a brunette with almost black curls. The most accurate physical representation of Heidi is the 2015 German-language film adaptation .

Tip : Are you visiting sad Frankfurt and looking for some literary travel sights there? Check out the Mainz Gutenberg Museum .

What to do and see at Heidiland

Heidiland Switzerland Heidi by Johanna Spyri Maienfeld Switzerland views with.a water trough and green grass overlooking the Swiss Alps mountains

Heididorf in Maienfeld is not just a place for book lovers to visit; it is a living museum to the traditional Apline way of life. Although you won’t see people in costume wandering around (like at, say, a Charles Dickens festival), Heidi’s village is set up to give visitors the feeling of walking back in time.

One of the unique features of Heididorf is that the creators want you to interact with the environment. This is no museum with exhibits safely kept behind glass. Rather, in each hut and building you are encouraged to play, touch, and actively participate in life in Heidi’s Switzerland. That makes this an especially fun day trip from Zurich for people traveling with kids.

As it is in the children’s novel Heidi , you will find yourself surrounded by goats, cows, chickens, and other animals grazing on the mountainside. While Heidiland is undeniably a tourist destination, it still feels pleasantly remote and quiet, with the sounds of goat bells carrying across the small village.

“Heidi led the way to her favorite spot from which she could look down on the distant valley, so green below them, and up to the great mountains where the eternal snows sparkled in the sunlight… [Heidi] listened to the pleasant tinkling of the goat-bells, as the herd moved about to graze… Heidi’s eyes were happy as she gazed out at the beautiful things she loved so well.” Quote from Heidi by Johanna Spyri

Heididorf is a more compact representation of Heidi’s world than it is portrayed in the books; you’ll find the Alps cottage, the Dörfli schoolhouse, and the Dörfli home all within a one-minute walk of each other in Heidiland. In the book, you understand there’s a greater distance, with the Alps cottage being located much higher up in the mountains and the schoolhouse and other house located halfway down the mountain in a Maienfeld village.

But, take heart. This minor change does detract in any way from the magic of experiencing Heidi’s Switzerland.

map of Heididorf on a sign post in Maienfeld Switzerland

Here’s a more detailed look at what you can expect to see and do at Heidiland apart from taking in the beautiful Swiss alpine scenery (which is alone worth the trip!).

Heidi’s Alp Cottage

Heidi's house in Heidiland at Maienfeld Switzerland. A log cabin set on a green hill.

The Alps cottage is the home where Heidi spends summers with her grandfather in the novel. Kids and adults alike can rifle through the pantry to find baguettes, cheese wheels, vegetables, and other traditional foods Heidi and her grandfather would have eaten. Keep an eye out for the cheese-making equipment in the pantry, too.

In the Alps cottage at Heidiland, you can pretend to cook at the old stone fireplace and have a seat at the rustic, wooden table. Grandfather’s bed is right here in the main room, but don’t miss the ladder near it. This will take you up to where Heidi sleeps in the hay loft.

“‘Where shall I sleep, Grandfather?’ she asked next. ‘Where you like,’ he replied. This answer pleased Heidi, and as she was looking round the room for a good place she noticed a ladder propped against the wall near her grandfather’s bed. She climbed up it at once and found herself in a hay loft. A pile of fresh, sweet-smelling hay lay there, and there was a round hole in the wall of the loft, through which she could see right down into the valley. ‘I shall sleep up here,’ she called down. ‘It’s a splendid place.’

Outside Heidi’s Alps cottage, you can “milk” the cow and see the pastures where Heidi and Peter would graze the goats each day.

Heidi’s house

This house recreates life in the small town where Heidi and her grandfather lived each winter so Heidi could attend school (although her grandfather greatly protested this at first!).

In the book, Heidi’s house requires quite a bit of fixing up, as Grandfather had stubbornly never left his mountainside hut until Heidi came along.

When you visit Heidi’s house in Maienfeld, you’ll find Heidi and Peter sitting at the kitchen table, representing when Heidi taught Peter how to read. Once again, don’t miss the ladder leading to Heidi’s room upstairs, and have a look outside her bedroom window, which affords a stunning view of the valley beyond.

Heidi’s Schoolhouse / Maienfeld Town Hall

This is the part of Heidi’s Switzerland representing where Heidi goes to school, once Grandfather finally agrees to live in Dörfli in the winter and send her. This is also where Peter goes to school when he is motivated enough to attend.

Heididorf school room with wooden desks and benches and a map on the wall in maienfeld switzerland

You can visit the main school room, sit at a child’s desk, and even don traditional apparel (although most of it is sized for children). You can also see the teacher’s office, the school’s food storage, and the area that would be used for town gatherings.

Gift Shop/ Switzerland’s Smallest Post Office

The gift shop at Heidiland is well worth the visit for any literary traveler. It’s stocked with various editions of the novel in many languages. If you purchase a copy of Heidi here (something I recommend!), make sure you stamp the title page with the Heididorf stamp!

You’ll also be able to purchase themed toys, magnets, Christmas ornaments, and a number of traditional Swiss items like galette pans.

Also inside the Heididorf shop is Switzerland’s smallest post office. This is a great place from which to send a Heidi-themed postcard.

Heidiland museum

Above the gift shop in Heididorf, you can visit the small but informative museum dedicated to the history of Heidi. You’ll learn a lot about Johanna Spyri and how her children’s novel has spread throughout the world. This is also the place to see representations of all the many screen adaptations of Heidi .

Heidi’s Trail

For those who want to take in even more of the beautiful Maienfeld scenery, you can walk the easy 6.5 km Heidi Trail. This walking path takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes, not including stops, and is well-marked.

On the Heidiweg Heidi trail hiking trail Heididorf Switzerland, a gravel path with a stone wall alongside it, houses in the distance and mountain vistas

The Heidi trail (or Heidiweg) begins at the Maienfeld railway station, taking you first through historic Maienfeld town, and then on to Heidiland, covering all of the highlights of Heidi’s Switzerland in one scenic walk.

From Heididorf, it continues to the Heidihof Hotel and its panoramic restaurant with gorgeous views of the Alps and the valley. Feel free to stop here for lunch and take in the views. From the Heidihof (or Swiss Heidi) Hotel, you’ll follow the Heidiweg trail to Heidi’s fountain and back to Maienfeld.

It’s an easy walk that is doable for most fitness levels .

Guided Tours and Experiences at Heidi’s village

Heidiland does offer special group tours upon request, including guided tours of Heidi’s village in various languages, a traditional cheese-making experience, local wine tasting, and a tour focused on traditional medicinal herbs you can find in Maienfeld.

To participate in one of these Heididorf group experiences, you will need to reach out to their coordinator in advance of your travel plans.

Alternatively, you can take a guided tour of Heidi’s village if you book a day trip to Maienfeld as a day trip from Zurich.

Tips for visiting Heididorf

Heididorf is open to visitors daily between March and November (exact dates vary from year to year). Between November and March, Heidiland is open on specific days only. Check the Heididorf website for the most up-to-date information on winter open days.

One ticket gives you admission to all the buildings and sites in Heidiland, though keep in mind you will only be able to use your ticket to enter each building once . Payment will be in CHF, and credit cards are accepted.

You’ll have to purchase your tickets onsite; there are no online tickets for Heidiland at the time of writing. Children under 4 years old are free.

Note that some people still live in the cottages surrounding Heididorf, so as always, behave respectfully not only of other travelers but of the environment and the people who still call it home.

How to Get to Heidiland

Getting to Maienfeld requires a scenic drive through the Swiss Alps via the A13 motorway. Keep in mind this will be through very windy roads with steep drop-offs. It’s inadvisable to make the journey in adverse weather conditions. Also, be warned that it’s a path that will awaken any tendency toward motion sickness!

That being said, the drive to Maienfeld and Heidi’s Switzerland is one of the most beautiful drives in Europe.

When you reach Heididorf, you will park in the designated car park and pay in advance for parking at the designated machines. Then you will walk about 5-10 minutes through some pretty scenery to get to the entrance of Heididorf and buy tickets.

You can check the price of rental cars here

By public transportation :

Take a train to the Maienfeld railway station, and from here, you can either walk along the Heidi trail to get to Heididorf (approximately 35 minutes) or catch the Heidi Bus, which operates on weekends and holidays from May to October.

By organized tour:

There is a company that runs a bus trip day tour to Heidiland from Zurich, and it also includes a stop in Vaduz, Liechtenstein. This is a great way to add another country to your list, and it’s a beautiful one. Check for availability here:

Who Will Enjoy Heidiland?

view of heidiland swiss alps with fake cow to the side, heidi's house

Heidiland is an easy day trip from Zurich and a great road trip stop for those traveling with kids, for book lovers , and for those looking for some incredible Swiss Alps views.

Kids will love running around in the open air as Heidi did and being able to interact with their surroundings. They can put on costumes and give each other lessons in the schoolhouse; they can “milk” a fake cow; they can follow the chickens around the yard. This is a really interactive, fun activity to do with kids to make Heidi’s Switzerland come alive.

Adults have much to enjoy here as well, especially but not exclusively if you’ve read and loved the novel. The original novel Heidi was published with the subtitle, “for children and those who love children.” I think the same can apply to Heididorf.

Even if you’ve never read Johanna Spyri’s Heidi before, you’ll learn a lot about traditional life in the Swiss Alps and enjoy some truly spectacular views.

Where to Stay Near Heididorf

Heididorf is an easy day trip from Zurich or Liechtenstein, but if you wish to stay and explore the area further, here are some highly-rated hotels in Maienfeld. You’ll be able to find several hotels within walking distance of Heidiland, including the Swiss Heidi Hotel . If you want to stay further outside, you can find resorts with thermal spas or stay in a castle .

schloss castle hotel near heidiland in maienfeld switzerland

As you look for somewhere to stay, I recommend checking for lodging on Hotels.com . I almost always book my accommodations through Hotels.com , because you can earn rewards for every night you stay without having to choose only one hotel chain to be loyal to. You can even book locally owned apart hotels and bed and breakfasts.

If you’re looking for privately owned vacation rentals, I recommend checking VRBO. I’ve personally had much better experiences with their owners and rentals than I have with their primary competitor.

Travel Resources At-A-Glance

All of the following are links to sites and services I actually use to book and plan my travel or to purchase books or travel gear.

For flights : Skyscanner is my number one go-to resource for booking flights. I love using the “explore” function to find the cheapest places I can fly during a given time or using the fare calendar to identify the cheapest days to fly.

For hotels and lodgings : For hotels, hotels.com , and for vacation rentals, VRBO.com . I’ve had much better experiences with private rentals through this website than through other popular private vacation rental websites.

For car rentals : Kayak allows comparisons across a wide range of booking agencies and lists reviews of companies as well. I’ve found this to be the most user-friendly and efficient way to compare car rental prices.

For tours & excursions : Viator and Get Your Guide are my top choices for booking excursions and tour experiences in a new destination.

For travel gear : Amazon.com and REI for more outdoorsy items. Check out my travel gear recs here.

For booking trains & buses : I find the Omio app and website to be the most easily navigable for comparing options for public transportation, especially in Europe,

Best travel credit card : My favorite travel rewards credit card for European travel has been the Chase Sapphire Rewards card . Visa is accepted just about everywhere in Europe, and there are no foreign transaction fees on the card. Some of the travel benefits I love on the Chase Sapphire include free TSA pre-check or Global Entry (worth it every time), an annual $200 travel credit, an annual $200 hotel benefit, built-in rental car, and trip insurance, and points are worth 50% more when used to book travel. I travel around Europe a LOT, and I end up with many free flights and hotel stays from using my points on my Chase Sapphire.

For books : Bookshop.org often has prices as good as Amazon or sometimes better, but profits go to indie bookstores all over the country. Whenever possible, consider buying your books from this online indie bookshop resource.

That concludes my visitor’s guide to Heidi’s Switzerland, Heididorf in Maienfeld, including everything you need to know to experience the magic yourself.

Heidi Village

The Heidi village is the original location of the filming of the Heidi story. Here in Maienfeld the author Johanna Spiry was inspired and since then nothing has been changed. Everything is furnished as it was in 1880. In the town hall stable you can visit the goats of Geissenpeter, whom Heidi accompanied every day. The horse and carriage are also housed here. Next to the Heidi house there is also Heidi's alpine hut and the town hall with the village school. The post office and the village store are also still there

Arrival Heididorf

The Heidi village is located near the small town of Maienfeld. From the train station Maienfeld you can reach the Heididorf via the Heidiweg, which is suitable for baby carriages in this section. The walking time is about 35 min (2.4 km).

  • Public transport

SBB trains depart from St. Gallen about every half hour in the direction of Chur . On the way you will pass Rorschach , Sargans and Bad Ragaz . Here you have two alternatives:

  • From Bad Ragaz, the Thurbo regional train leaves from platform 4 and takes only 2 min to Maienfeld station.
  • In Bad Ragaz track E stops the Postbus No. 22. It has five stops to Maienfeld station and takes 12 min.

In total, you should allow about 1.5 to 2 hours to get to St. Gallen.

From Zurich you need (also in the direction of Chur) about 1-1.5 hours via Sargans. In Sargans you can change to the Thurbo train, which takes about 7 minutes to Maienfeld train station.

You can leave large pieces of luggage here until you leave again:

  • Tourist Information (and Heidi Shop) at Bahnhofstrasse 1.

From May to October you can take the post bus from Maienfeld train station to the Heidi village on weekends and holidays.

By car, from Lake Constance, take the A13 freeway. From Zurich, take the A3 to Sargans and turn off onto the A13. The freeway exit 13 leads to Maienfeld.

Brown signs with the inscription "Heididorf" and a car or bus symbol will help you find your way to the parking lot. The parking lot is located directly at the Hotel Restaurant Heidihof.

For the navigation system it is best to enter the Bovelweg 16 in Maienfeld or the Coordinates: 47.017255, 9.543333.

You will find further parking spaces at the Heidihof and at the Heidibrunnen.

  • Who is the Heidi Village suitable for?

The Heididorf is wonderfully suitable for children, but under the age of 10 only when accompanied by an adult.

Dogs are allowed on a leash. However, in front of buildings and museums they wait tied up outside.

The direct route between Maienfeld train station and the Heidi village is well suited for wheelchairs and strollers. The section (No. 7) of the circular trail between Heidihof and Heidibrunnen is unfortunately not.

The original location of the filming of the Heidi myth is much more than just a museum. It takes you on a journey through time that will not let you go again so quickly.

Heidi Village, Switzerland: Is It Worth Visiting?

heidi village switzerland

An iconic place to visit in Switzerland is the authentic Heidi Village in the eastern part of the country, very close to the border of Liechtenstein, Germany, and Austria.

If you are aware of the world-famous Heidi Story , then you will already know what I am referring to. But, if not, the next question will answer your questions about Heidi’s story, after which I’m sure it will ring a bell or two in your mind.

Join me as I run through everything about Heidi, visiting the Heidi Village, where it is, how to get there, and great things to see in the area too.

Table of Contents

Heidi’s Story

The world-famous Heidi story was written by the famous Swiss author , Johanna Spyri. It tells a story about a young orphaned girl character, Heidi, who is sent to live with her grandfather in the alps.

Heidi is fascinated by her grandfather but the rest of the village is scared by his long beard. Johanna Spyri’s Heidi loves living in the Swiss Alps, interacting with nature, and exploring the mountains.

Heidi book - Johanna Spyri

One day, Johanna Spyri’s Heidi is sent to live with her aunt in town with a new family. Heidi doesn’t enjoy her life there and misses her grandfather far too much. She belongs with him in the mountains, but can she make it back? This is the story of Heidi’s life.

Where is Heidi Village (Heididorf) located?

Heidi village

Heididorf sits in Eastern Switzerland amongst the Alps and above the Rhine Valley in a region called Heidiland .

You could not find a more iconic part of Switzerland and it is home to mountain peaks, stunning alpine lakes, and traditional Swiss villages, and it is teaming with nature also.

Johanna Spyri couldn’t have chosen a better location for Heidi’s Village if she had tried. Even though the story of Heidi is fictional, of course, you can easily imagine it being set in the stunning area surrounding Heididorf.

How To Get To Heididorf

Getting to Heidi’s village is very easy as Switzerland has such excellent public transportation systems .

If you are flying to Switzerland, the best place to land is Zurich, from which you can get public transport. The journey takes less than 2.5 hours and requires a direct train or two trains to Maienfeld after which you can walk up to Heidi Village.

The quickest option from Zurich is to drive and this takes just over 1 hour.

Both of these journeys are stunning as they follow Lake Zurich and Walensee before entering the valley into the alps.

Things to do in Heididorf

Walk to heidi village to set the scene.

The first part of experiencing Heidi Village is the short hike there. You will walk along a path that will take you past fields of Swiss cows, and goats, with views of the alps and the Rhine Valley below.

There is no better way of getting your mind into the story of Heidi before you get to the Heidi Village.

Explore The Village

Various attractions in Heidi village

The entrance to the village gives you access to seeing 4 sites after you have completed the walk. For around 15 euros you can see Heidi’s house, Heidi’s alpine hut, Johanna Spyri’s “World of Heidi” exhibition, and a replica of the home of Alpöhi.

You can also stop at the Hotel Restaurant Heidihof for lunch and hike up to the Heidi Alp too.

From the gift shop (where you buy your ticket), which is also the smallest post office in the country, you can enter the exhibition/museum. Buy some souvenirs here too if you like, and their stamp is a special one as well.

The Heidi Museum

The museum showcases the complete collection of Heidi books from across the world which includes books in 55 different languages.

You will also see scenes from the 18 different films made about the story and find props/costumes from the most recent version of Heidi.

There is also a dedicated exhibition to the famous Swiss writer Johanna Spyri who used to visit the area and got her inspiration from her visits.

Seeing Heidi’s House

Heidi’s house

A trip to the Heidi House should be next and it feels like stepping back in time. They have done an amazing job of ensuring the Heidi House is as accurate as it would have been in the 1880s.

You will find an old cellar where they would have kept food cold, the kitchen, plus Heidi’s bedroom. All the furniture and artifacts in the original Heidi House are as they would have been back then, and are a fascinating insight into it all.

Check Out The Alpine Hut

You can’t leave without walking up to the alpine hut after the Heidi House. Everything is as it would have been and you can imagine how Heidi’s time would have been spent.

The kitchen is a great example of how food would have been made in the novel Heidi, as a lot did not come from the village shop back then.

Upstairs will give you a lovely view, and you can easily imagine Heidi reflecting on her days while gazing out of the window.

Feed The Animals

Next up, you should go and feed the animals just like Heidi did as they are all waiting for you in the village.

Things to do in Heideland

Hike the heidi trail.

Located in Pizol and designed for a fun family day out, the Heidi Trail begins at the Pardiel mountain station and does a loop to the Alp Schwarzbüel and back.

It is only 4 km long and takes around 2-3 hours. The views along the way are stunning, plus kids can enjoy a sensory barefoot path, a hammock forest, a goat jump, and the Kneipp pool too!

Join Heidi And Peter On The Legendary Adventure Trail

Another fun hike for the whole family, this trail has you hiking with Peter and Heidi. It is a short 2-hour hike over 3 km where kids try to help Heidi and Peter to free the wild man banished to the mountains.

Visit The Tectonic Arena Sardona

The Tectonic Arena Sardona

The UNESCO World Heritage Site Sardona is a mesmerizing area where you can feel the tectonic plates pushing against each other.

It is in this place where you can learn about how the alps were made, how they are still forming, and see some of it up close. It is a very special place to visit!

Enjoy The Bad Ragaz Springs

The town of Bad Ragaz is home to the Bad Ragaz springs which flow with mineral-rich water. If you want to be pampered for a day, head to Bad Ragaz where they use special spring water in their spa treatments.

Things To Do In Maienfeld

Maienfeld, Switzerland sits just below Heididorf along the banks of the Rhone and across from Bad Ragaz. It is home to vineyards, stunning houses, views of the alps, and lots more. Visiting is a must while you are in the area and here are the great things to do.

Have Lunch In Brandis Castle

Brandis Castle , originally known as Maienfeld Castle, dates back to the 13th century and was built under the orders of the Freiherr von Aspermont. The town of Maienfeld actually grew around the castle and a visit there is very much recommended.

The architecture is excellent, there is a restaurant inside, and you will find some 14th-century paintings by an artist called the Waltensburg master, which are his only known works. You will see scenes from the time such as taverns or inns, and more.

Hike Up To Glegghorn Or Vilan

Overlooking the town of Maienfeld are the stunning mountains of Glegghorn and Vilan. Hiking up to the mountains is quite tough but there are numerous trails to follow, some harder than others.

The views from the top are hard to beat so be sure to go up as far as you can handle. Getting to the summit will not be easy for everyone though and should only be attempted if you are fit enough.

Have Wine Tour At Salenegg Castle

Salenegg Castle

The Salenegg Castle is another Swiss heritage site of national significance in the town. Its location could not be more beautiful as it integrates with the vineyards around the town.

The castle is a functioning winery so while seeing a slice of history you can also taste some great wine, do a vineyard tour, and learn about the varieties of grapes and wines too!

Where to Stay in Maienfeld

There are lots of different types of accommodation available in Maienfeld ranging from more basic and affordable all the way up to mega luxury.

If you want to be pampered to the max, stay at the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz just across the river where two five-star hotels join forces to give you an experience of a lifetime.

For more affordable options, look to booking.com for the best deals as they have a great selection and great prices.
