Sydney Opera House

  • Information

The iconic Sydney Opera House is situated at the Bennelong Point on Sydney Harbour and is adjacent to the Royal Botanic Gardens. The multi-venue performing arts centre was designed by Jørn Utzon, a Danish architect. Construction on the centre started in 1958 after the Government of New South Wales authorised Utzon to take charge of constructing the opera house. Today, the Sydney Opera House hosts more than 1,500 performances annually and is regarded as the leading tourist attraction in Australia, with more than 1.2 million people attending the centre annually.

SydneyOperaHouse

In a city now predominantly the product of late twentieth century urban redevelopment, The Rocks provides an opportunity to experience an environment where buildings and public places of the eighteenth, nineteenth and early twentieth century still remain. Stories from the past, such as the life of convict households, publicans' expansion plans, the habits of sailors and wharf labourers, and the changing alignment of the waterfront, can be read from archaeological evidence, written histories and oral testimony, as well as the very fabric and setting of many of the buildings themselves.

Michael truly is the best ! Planned an amazing 20 day trip to Australia and New Zealand and we are just at the tail end heading home soon. Everything was just as he described ! A truly seamless perfect family holiday, tailored to our needs - thanks to Michael ! Don’t hesitate ... just contact Michael and then look forward to the best holiday ever!

Rick & Diane – Lifestyler Travellers

Michael Nees and Guest New Zealand have planned and booked three trips for us, two to New Zealand and one to Australia. The experience each time was fantastic! The knowledge and professionalism of Michael and his team were very helpful. He does not recommend a B&B or Lodge unless he has stayed there himself. His choices have been fabulous and our hosts were very gracious and helpful. He has recommended the perfect itinerary each trip and his recommended activities or tours have all been interesting, fun and exciting. We highly recommend Guest New Zealand and Michael for a reasonably priced, first class and memorable vacation experience.

Susan & Robert Lunson – Lifestyle Travellers

My husband and I have just returned from 28 days in Australia and New Zealand. We have traveled independently and as part of tours. For this trip we decided to try working with a travel company. I stumbled upon Guest New Zealand and was most impressed with the reviews where people mentioned if they had a problem, a phone to Michael fixed it right away. That sold me on working with him, even before I met him. Michael did not disappoint. He put together a great itinerary that had us in 5 cities in Australia and driving both the North and South Islands of New Zealand. The B & B's were wonderful, the staffs attentive. The hotels were first class. And the tours were varied and fascinating, with enough time on our own for miles and miles of walking discovery. Every detail was covered. Michael always returned our calls promptly and always seemed to be smiling on the other end of the call. We would love to return and if and when we do, Michael will be planning our next trip. The next one will include train rides, ok, Michael?

Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji: Ultimate South Pacific Vacation

Travel to Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji with the ultimate South Pacific vacation package.

We often have couples looking for a 3-country itinerary. Might as well, as long as you are down in the South Pacific. So when a couple from Denver told us they wanted to make the most of their time down south, we planned the Ultimate South Pacific Vacation, sending them to Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji.

We started them at Peninsula Boutique Hotel in Port Douglas so they could dive in the Great Barrier Reef. Then they flew to the mystic Red Center, where they learned about the sacred lands of the Anangu people. They marveled at the gorgeous colors of Uluru at sunrise from the back of a camel and had a fantastic dinner under the stars while viewing Uluru and Kata Tjuta. They finished their stay in Australia with 3 fabulous nights in Sydney.

Continuing their Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji vacation, they traveled to Queenstown, New Zealand’s adventure capital. They took a cruise through the stunning Milford Sound and spent a day of adventure amid Queenstown’s gorgeous scenery. Then, they traveled to Rotorua to learn about Maori culture and take in the fascinating geothermal sites.

Next, they traveled to Auckland and stopped en route at the Waitomo Glowworm Caves. They took an exciting inner tube ride through the caves, with the famous glowworms creating a star-like canvas overhead. In Auckland, they toured the city and hinterlands to see even more magnificent New Zealand scenery.

Finally, they stopped for some real relaxation in the sunny Mamanuca Islands in Fiji. They stayed at Tropica Island Resort, surrounded by lush tropical vegetation, white sand beaches, and vibrant coral reefs. Here, they experienced the ultimate relaxation after their exciting tour through Australia and New Zealand. They were welcomed with warm Fijian hospitality and even met a local Fijian chief, and had plenty of time to lounge on the beach.

New Zealand and Australia plus Fiji: An Itinerary

Have you wanted to plan a trip to New Zealand and Australia, but just felt overwhelmed and not sure where to start? I actually did not have that problem because in the beginning of October, my mother announced that she wanted to go to New Zealand and Australia, and would take me along if I planned the trip, then handed me a list of places she wanted to go! Oh, and she wanted to leave the next month for this month-long journey! So, at least I had a starting point! I hope this itinerary will inspire you to head Down Under for your own adventures.

Days 1 – 3: Travel

Depending upon where you are traveling from, you may well get there faster. We left on a Tuesday (from New Orleans) and arrived in Auckland very early Thursday morning. Thank goodness we had booked a Club Room at  The Langham Hotel , which meant that we were able to access the Club Lounge and its fabulous breakfast buffet (they also served complimentary afternoon tea and evening cocktails and appetizers). The upgrade to a Club Room was absolutely worth it. The hotel is very centrally located, gorgeously appointed (the website is very true-to-life), and the staff could not have been more wonderfully helpful and friendly.

New Zealand

fiji australia new zealand trip

After we enjoyed our delicious breakfast, we took a ferry to Devonport to enjoy the short ride across the bay, which gave us wonderful views of the Auckland skyline. Devonport has cute little shops and cafes, and is more quaint and navigable than the large city of Auckland, so a great starting point for a long journey! We found a lovely cafe for lunch overlooking the water and enjoyed delicious homemade soup and a glass or two of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc.

Dinner at Tony’s Lord Nelson Restaurant , which specializes in locally sourced food.

Day 4:  Waiheke Island Vineyard Tour

There are many companies that provide wine tours of this world-class island. Ours was arranged through Fullers , so it included ferry tickets, a comfortable van (and knowledgeable driver), tastings at four vineyards, and an enormous lunch. But as mentioned, there are plenty of other tours, so you are sure to find one that suits you.

fiji australia new zealand trip

Day 5: Travel from Auckland to Rotorua

Depending upon your budget and other needs, you may choose to take a bus, rent a car, or hire a private transfer. We took a bus that picked us up at our hotel in Auckland, provided us with a boxed lunch, and dropped us off at our hotel in Rotorua. I can’t say I’d recommend the company we used, but there are plenty of options if you do a quick Google search. The trip, with a restroom stop, took about six hours.

We stayed at the Wai Ora Lakeside Spa Resort, though I truly can’t recommend it. It is outside of town, so you can’t easily access restaurants or other activities if you don’t have your own car. The room was adequate, though the door to the bathroom was made of opaque glass, so privacy really was an issue. The restaurant is just okay. I’ve stayed at lots of spa resorts, and have absolutely no idea why this basic motel bills itself as a spa resort. Truly, I think this is false advertisement, so stay tuned for my hotel review. My suggestion is to find a hotel in town where you will have plenty of dining options.

fiji australia new zealand trip

Day 6:  Eco Thermal Park Tour

The whole purpose of going to Rotorua is to go to the thermal parks because they are spectacular. Stay tuned for a separate post about them, where I’ll share photographs of the many different types of thermal pools. There are geysers, boiling mud pools, and hot springs, and many are very easily accessed via a boardwalk, while others require a bit of a hike (or a quick bus ride).

Day 7: Rotorua to Queenstown via Air New Zealand

Rotorua is on the North Island and Queenstown is in the southern portion of the North Island, so unless you rent a car and have lots of time, flying to Queenstown is your best option.

We stayed in a Deluxe Room at Browns Boutique Hotel , which also included breakfast. The hotel is truly lovely and is incredibly centrally located so that you can walk to many restaurants, shops, and even the Skyline Gondola (see below).

fiji australia new zealand trip

Day 8:  Milford Sound

No trip to New Zealand would be complete without a cruise through Milford Sound, in Fjorland National Park, which is about four hours away from Queensland. Although it was mostly overcast the day we went, Milford Sound was still beautiful. I particularly like this photograph because of its moodiness. The clouds parted many times throughout the day, so we had wonderful views of the many waterfalls, and even saw some seals sunning themselves on a rock. There are numerous tour companies that offer bus and cruise packages, so my recommendation is to pick the one that is best for you.

fiji australia new zealand trip

Day 9:  Skyline Gondola and Kiwi Birdlife Park

If you stay at Browns Boutique Hotel, then these attractions will be just a few blocks away, leaving you plenty of time to do some shopping, or visit other attractions which may interest you. The  Skyline Gondola Queenstown has two restaurants on its observation deck, plus a bar lounge adjacent to the main restaurant (the other is a cafe that serves soups, sandwiches, and salads). I highly recommend ordering a cider or two so that you can just sit and take in the view!

Next door is the Kiwi Birdlife Park , which focuses on conservation, and is where you can see the extremely endangered kiwi. In addition to a variety of birds, this park hosts a number of other animals, including reptiles and even a bushtailed possum.

Day 10: Travel from Queenstown to Sydney

Prepare to fall in love with Qantas Airlines, which offers direct flights all over Australia, and thus makes travel on this large continent fairly easy and inexpensive.

Sydney Harbor B&B : I’ll post a full review, so be on the lookout for that. I have mixed feelings about this B&B. First, Sydney is expensive, and although I am one to splurge on hotels, I just didn’t want to stay in a giant chain hotel, so opted for this small facility, located in a fabulous neighborhood. Its best trait is its location. There are restaurants, pubs, and shops within very easy walking distance, even though the B&B itself is located on a quiet back street. However, I did not find the room comfortable (and it was way too dark), and breakfast was really basic (eggs and toast).

fiji australia new zealand trip

Hunter Valley Wine Tour : There are a number of tour companies that will pick you up from your hotel and drive you from vineyard to vineyard, though I recommend Hunter Valley Wine Tasting Tours , as they consistently get good reviews, they cater to small groups, and their transportation is comfortable. Depending on the time of day and length of your tour, you can add a stop for lunch, so this really can be an all-day outing, unless you’d like to get back to Sydney early to do some exploring on your own.

Taronga Zoo Sydney

Full Disclosure: I MUCH prefer to see animals in their natural habitat and in general am against keeping them in captivity. However, after doing a lot of research about the Taronga Zoo Sydney , I agreed to go, and I’m glad that I did. Their work in wildlife conservation and environmental sustainability is impressive, so I felt my money was well-spent. Tips: (1)There is a gondola that glides over the entire zoo, giving you excellent views of the animals and also of Sydney, which is across the harbor. I suggest taking the ferry from Sydney Harbor to the zoo (there’s a designated ferry for the zoo), and then taking the gondola to the top of the zoo (which is built on a hillside), so that you can enjoy the zoo as you walk down the hill, rather than up! (2) Splurge on the VIP Aussie Gold Tour , which includes admission, riding the Sky Safari, and going behind the scenes and into the enclosures of some of the native animals. I am pleased to report that they do not allow visitors to have actual contact with any of the animals, which I think is a very good thing. Be weary of any facility that allows you to hold koala bears (which are not naturally as cuddly as they look) or any other wildlife. It is likely that the animals have been drugged and/or “broken” (their spirits broken after being “trained,” a false term that really means abused into submission). And really, no one needs to hold these animals. Just  seeing them is absolutely enchanting!

fiji australia new zealand trip

Dinner at Bennelong : This elegant restaurant is located inside of the Sydney Opera House. I am often hesitant about dining in the restaurants of famous sites–my concern is that the food won’t be any good, so you’re just paying for the view or space. Well, don’t worry, the food at Bennelong is excellent! If you think the exterior of the Opera House is fabulous (and photographs just don’t do it justice), click the link to Bennelong and check out the interior! It is absolutely gorgeous. Tip: Make your reservation as far ahead of time as possible and request a window table. It’s magical to watch the sun set over Sydney Harbour.

Day 13: Travel from Sydney to Hobart, Tasmania

fiji australia new zealand trip

Dinner at Fish 349: If you’ve already strolled along Elizabeth Street then you will no doubt have already seen this restaurant, which is just a couple of blocks away from the inn. The building is modern, and though the menu is fairly limited, I really enjoyed the emphasis on locally sourced ingredients.

fiji australia new zealand trip

This is a FULL day, so dress comfortably, and bring snacks. You’ll have a chance to purchase lunch along the way, or you can bring that too.

Port Arthur is an historic site, so history buffs will really enjoy it. I wasn’t so familiar with the history, so found myself simply enjoying the architecture of the buildings, which were in varying degrees of ruin.

fiji australia new zealand trip

On trips of this length, I always schedule “off” days–these are the days that I can either simply rest, or I can explore something that I have discovered along the way. On my “off” day in Hobart, I slept in really late, then leisurely walked down Elizabeth Street for an early lunch before doing a bit of shopping. I found a cute little coffee shop connected to a book store, and though some may think it a waste of vacation time, I sat in that coffee shop and just enjoyed reading and chatting with some of the locals. There are a number of national parks in the region, and tour companies can provide you with transportation and a guide, if you want to explore the area. And although Tasmania is an Australian state, its appearance is more similar to New Zealand, with gentle mountains, rolling hills, and lots of lush greenery.

Dinner at Franklin :  This restaurant is quite an experience. The kitchen in right in the middle of the restaurant, with bar seating all around it. I requested a table when I made my reservation, though, which is just my personal preference. The menu is very creative, and like Fish 349, it focuses on locally sourced ingredients.

Day 16: Travel from Hobart, Tasmania to Melbourne

The Lyall Hotel : This stylish hotel is in a quiet neighborhood and provides a very comfortable home base. The staff seems to genuinely care about the hotel’s guests. The restaurant offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner (all quite good) and there is also a champagne bar–a fun place to unwind after a day of adventures.

Dinner at Bacash Restaurant : This restaurant is known for their excellent seafood, especially flounder. I was especially pleased with their use of restraint–food was prepared with minimal fuss, which yielded a really excellent meal.

Depending upon your interests, you can either follow the schedule below, or make arrangements to see the Twelve Apostles (which is what I’ll do the next time I am in Melbourne). Note that they are located nearly three hours outside of central Melbourne. Numerous tour companies provide excursions to see them–just realize that will be an all-day outing.

fiji australia new zealand trip

Penguin Express Tour: You have your choice of tour operators to arrange an outing to Phillip Island to watch the nightly “parade” of penguins. The precious little birds swim ashore all at the same time, though with much hesitation, and eventually waddle back to their nest. It takes quite a while for them to find the nerve to leave the protection of the water, so you’ll spend time watching a few run ashore, then race back into the water. Then others will make their attempt to leave the water, only to chicken out at the last minute. This funny routine lasts for a while, and is a hoot to watch. You are able to view this activity, which happens right about at sundown, from a series of boardwalks. It is truly quite a sight, though since the penguins’ eyes are sensitive to light, photography is not permitted. So, just enjoy the experience!

Day 18: Travel from Melbourne to Alice Springs

Chifley Alice Springs Resort : If you really want to get a feel for the Australian Outback, Alice Springs is a great start. Again, I would not consider this hotel a “resort” in the traditional sense, since to me, it’s a basic, inexpensive hotel, and a good launch pad for Outback excursions. But it was comfortable and the restaurant is pretty good.

fiji australia new zealand trip

Day 20: Travel from Alice Springs to Uluru/Ayers Rock

There is a wide variety of hotels at Ayers Rock Resort, which is really the only place to stay in the area. I opted for Sails in the Desert , which is the most luxurious, and includes a wonderful pool, a very nice gift shop, a bar and adjoining cafe, and a large restaurant. Breakfast every morning was fantastic, with lots of choices. However, in terms of convenience, all of the hotels located at Ayers Rock Resort are very close together and are serviced by the same tour operators, so pick the one that meets your budget and needs.

fiji australia new zealand trip

I spent this day relaxing in the pool and admiring the beautiful countryside. After trekking around Uluru the day before and heading back out there that evening, some down time in the pool, or possibly even a spa service, is just the ticket.

fiji australia new zealand trip

You also have a great vantage point from which to watch as the sun sets behind the Olgas, which is also breathtaking. And, a highlight for me was once the sun had fully set, all lights were turned off and I saw the night sky as I had never in my life seen it. We were able to see two galaxies and three planets, which were easy to identify, as well as constellations only visible from below the equator. This is why I can overlook the poor quality meal. The views of Uluru, the Olgas, and the night sky are bucket-list views. Tip: Tours generally do not include the National Park Entry fee, which must be paid in cash and is 25AUD/person, so be sure to bring sufficient cash along.

Day 22: Travel from Uluru to Cairns

Cairns is the main gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, so is a large tourist town that offers every sort of accommodation that you could want. It has almost a “spring break” vibe to it, so some might prefer to stay somewhere nearby, but more low key. I didn’t have any issues with crowds or noise and found it helpful that there were many options in terms of dining, excursions, etc.

fiji australia new zealand trip

Dinner at Bagus CafĂ© : I like to plan where I’m going to eat dinner on my day of arrival, especially if I’m not getting into town until late. This little Indonesian restaurant is a one minute walk from Waters Edge, so just the perfect spot to grab a bite.

fiji australia new zealand trip

As eager as I was to see the Great Barrier Reef, I also wanted to see the lush rain forest located behind the resort city of Cairns, and this excursion did not disappoint. You can tailor a trip to Kuranda to suit your needs. We traveled by tour bus to Caravonica Lakes, where we boarded the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway to Kuranda, where we had lunch at a quaint hotel restaurant right in the center of the very small town. As you ride the Skyrail, which is basically a very long gondola ride, you are treated to amazing views, such as this–which include forest-covered mountains, then the city of Cairns, and then the ocean. Note that there are two chances to get out and walk through the rain forest, so take advantage of that, as it’s really quite pretty.

fiji australia new zealand trip

We then took the scenic rail back from Kuranda to Cairns. The rail is historic and very charming, and the ride is a lot of fun, with pretty views that you might have missed when high above in the Skyrail. So, it’s a nice combination to take both forms of transportation.

Day 26: Travel from Cairns to Sydney

This is your least exciting day…it’s just to get you to Sydney so that you can catch your Fiji Airways flight to Fiji for your extended layover. You can skip this step if you don’t plan to stay in Fiji. On this day you’d just plan to travel from Cairns back home.

Holiday Inn Sydney Airport :  The hotel is not connected to the airport, though you can get to the hotel and then back to the airport the next day via a shuttle service that is inexpensive. And as airport hotels go, this one is perfectly comfortable and boasts a casual and a more upscale restaurant, so plenty of options.

Day 27: Travel from Sydney to Fiji

Book a private transfer via Rosie Tours to the resort, so that when you arrive in Fiji, you’ll be whisked to the resort (we arrived quite late, so were glad not to have to make transportation arrangements on the spot). You can also book excursions with Rosie Tours, if you think you’ll want to venture beyond the resort. Since this was the end of a fairly long trip, I knew I’d be happy just lying on the beach or by a pool for a couple of days.

NorthernBeachesCouncil

In a city now predominantly the product of late twentieth century urban redevelopment, The Rocks provides an opportunity to experience an environment where buildings and public places of the eighteenth, nineteenth and early twentieth century still remain. Stories from the past, such as the life of convict households, publicans' expansion plans, the habits of sailors and wharf labourers, and the changing alignment of the waterfront, can be read from archaeological evidence, written histories and oral testimony, as well as the very fabric and setting of many of the buildings themselves.

The Huka Falls are the largest falls on the Waikato River, near Taupo on New Zealand's North Island and it is also the most visited natural attraction in New Zealand. The Waikato river is one of New Zealand's longest rivers and it drains Lake Taupo - the largest freshwater lake in all of Australasia. The name Huka is the Maori word for 'foam', which is appropriate as the falling water and rapids certainly resembles foam, especially under flooding Around 220,000 litres per second of pours over the cliff face, and then rushes under a pedestrian bridge. The water then bursts out of its rapids, over the 11 metre falls, and back into the Waikato River.

HukaFalls

It’s not only the clear blue water, fresh air, surrounding volcanoes and green mountains that make Lake Taupo such a favourite among locals and foreigners; friendly, bustling towns, excellent trout fishing and a number of great outdoor adventure activities ensure visitors flock to the area, especially in high summer. For high flyers there’s skydiving and bungy jumping, water lovers can take a cruise to view giant Maori carvings, hire a jetboat or sightsee via a floatplane, and avid cyclist have plenty of trail options. Visit Tongariro National Park, marvel at Huka Falls, or simply relax near to the lake, drinking in the perfect sights and sounds.

The track is gently undulating and wanders through mountain beech forest with some great river views. Some scenes in the Lord of the Rings movies were filmed near this part of the river.

Sandra Stancic – Lifestyle Traveller

I found Guest NZ online and sent them an email along with several other agencies, as I was looking to book my vacation to Australia and New Zealand. Michael Nees responded right away. I proceeded to book my vacation through his agency. He asked what I liked and worked with me in order to fulfill all of my wants and needs. He was very responsive and professional. And when I say responsive, I mean he would respond the same day even with the time difference. It was one of the best vacations I have taken, and I do travel a lot. When I arrived in NZ a bag with GPS, maps, cell phone and electrical plug adaptor were waiting for me along with an easy return envelope and some post cards. This was so helpful; I was able to stay in touch with my family and my boyfriend, plus I knew I could always call him or emergency # if I needed it. During my trip to Australia I forgot all my cash inside a safe at one of the places where I stayed. Michael arranged for the $ to be sent and deposited to my credit card. I cannot say enough of how happy I was with Michael Nees’s services. I would wholeheartedly recommend Michael and Guest NZ to anyone who is looking to go to New Zealand and/or Australia and I would like to take this opportunity to thank him for a wonderful and most memorable vacation ever!

Mike & Megan Family

Let me start out with thank you!!! It was a trip of a lifetime, we can’t put into words the how amazing the experience was. Your work towards our trip was fantastic and we would be honoured to be listed as a reference for folks looking for a similar journey. You did a wonderful job relating to our needs. We had some really neat pictures of the Koala bears in the Daintree experience, our guide for the day called the outfit after we left and requested they email them to me. We are now home and back to the grindstone. The girls have informed me we definitely need to plan on another trip in similar fashion. Thanks again Mike & Megan and family.

I Lived Out of a Backpack for 2 Years on Working Holidays, and These Are the 17 Items I Relied on — From $8

They come everywhere with me now.

Travel + Leisure / Madison Woiten

Working holiday visas allow travelers between the ages of 18 and 35 to dip a toe into life abroad by spending a year or more in a foreign country — and even earning a paycheck while they’re at it. For me, this was the only way that I could afford to travel in my 20s. I quit my corporate job, found someone to take over my lease in West Los Angeles, packed some necessities into a 70-liter backpack, and booked a one-way flight to New Zealand .

Naturally, I clung to the few items that I took with me — things that gave me comfort or served an essential purpose like keeping my phone charged and my travel photos safeguarded — during the two-year period that I was abroad. The experience was filled with life-altering challenges and adventures, and in true nomad fashion, I bounced from job to job as I made my way from Auckland to the ski bum villages and remote rainforests of the South Island, up to Sydney, around the Australian Outback, down to Tasmania, and back up to the hipster neighborhoods of Melbourne; I worked as a farmhand, a housekeeper, and even as a painter, all while living out of a backpack and traveling around in a camper van .

From my favorite pair of shorts to a packable coffee maker that I couldn't have functioned without, here are the 17 things that I’m glad I had with me on my working holidays in New Zealand and Australia.

Osprey Aura AG 65 Pack

I didn’t have an Osprey pack when I started traveling, and boy, did I suffer the consequences. My original bag quickly started falling apart, ripping at the seams, and losing its shape. So, I switched to this classic Osprey bag and — *big sigh of relief* — life got easier. These packs help keep your things stacked up on your hips with their weight-distributing waist strap instead of weighing on your back, and my Osprey Aura AG 65 is one of the most comfortable bags I’ve tried. It's also equipped with tons of useful pockets and compartments, so it's basically a Mary Poppins bag for backpackers.

Mregb Solar Power Bank

Between jobs, I squeezed in as much time in the great Australasian wild as possible — with no way to charge my devices but a portable solar power bank. All you have to do is leave this thing in the sun (and rest assured, there’s plenty of sun down under), and it’ll keep the juice flowing to your phone, headphones, tablet, and other electronics for as long as you want to stay out there. What's more, it also has a built-in flashlight and it's waterproof.

Hydro Flask 32-ounce Water Bottle

A durable water bottle is a must for exploring the arid Outback and working on farms in one of the hottest, driest places on Earth. Find one that you love and won’t forget in the seat-back pocket of the plane or on the floor of a long-tail boat in Thailand (guilty), and you're good to go. My Hydro Flask kept liquids surprisingly cold and made me actually, for the first time ever, want to drink water. And, it's spill-proof, which was a welcomed feature for someone on the move.

Merrell Moab 3 Hiking Shoes

I traveled for three years straight with these trusty Merrell hiking shoes — the original Moab style, now on its third iteration — and they never failed me. They stood up against damp, fern-flanked trails in the New Zealand rainforest, on snowy and icy peaks in the Southern Alps, and on the sandy land of Uluru in Australia’s Red Center. I also worked in them almost daily without any pain or discomfort. Whether you're on a working holiday or tackling a local trail, these shoes are up for any adventure.

Epicka Universal Travel Power Adapter

Having a universal power adapter kept me from juggling too many small accessories and was especially helpful for traveling to Southeast Asia and Europe directly from Australia. This one plug fits into any socket, no matter where you are, and can charge up to six devices at once with its all-in-one design. Plus, it hardly takes up any space in your pack.

Prana Salt Kissed Crop Rash Guard

Okay, a rash guard is the one thing that I didn’t bring, but desperately wish that I had. The ozone layer over Australia and New Zealand is especially thin, which means that more UV rays can reach your skin — even though the sun feels the same as it always does. This combined with the beach culture down under means that Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world. In addition to piling on the sunscreen, I recommend covering up with a rash guard like this one by Prana; it offers UPF 50+ sun protection and is comfortable to wear on the shore and in the water.

RuMe Foldable Reusable Shopping Tote

Both New Zealand and Australia are famously against single-use plastic bags. Almost everyone brings their own totes to the grocery store (it's the best practice no matter where you go), so I had to come prepared with my own reusable bag. True, you can buy one when you arrive at your destination, but you might not find one as lightweight and packable as this Amazon-loved one; it only weighs 4 ounces and folds down to 5.5 inches by 2 inches so it doesn't take up too much space in your bag. When I wasn't grocery shopping, it was good to have handy when I needed a makeshift tote, wet bag, laundry bag, and so on.

Sea to Summit X Brew Collapsible Coffee Dripper

A quality cup of joe was not easy to come by on the rural farms that I’ve worked on — or even in the hostels. Call me crazy, but because of my working holidays, I now travel with my own kit so I'm never without my precious morning java. After trying lots of different coffee makers on the road, from mini percolators to portable presses, I’ve found that a collapsible dripper is the easiest, cleanest, and most packable option. This one comes with a reusable stainless-steel mesh filter, and shoppers say that it " collapses down to almost nothing " and is " absolutely the best way to brew coffee on the trail ."

Patagonia Outdoor Everyday Shorts

You never really know what kind of job you’re going to end up with as a backpacker, or what you’ll need to wear while doing it. These Patagonia shorts were good for almost anything that the road could have thrown at me. They’re much more durable and work-ready than your average athletic shorts, and they dry quickly, have lots of pockets, and can be worn casually when there's downtime; I’ve worn them straight from a morning of vineyard work onto a hiking trail.

Seagate Portable External Hard Drive

If you plan to travel with electronics — I brought my laptop and a point-and-shoot camera — it’s a good idea to back up your data in case anything happens to your devices while you’re abroad. Things can get stolen or broken, and you don't want these circumstances to be why you lose all of your precious travel photos and important documents. Or, if you’re like me and your storage is perpetually full, you also won’t have to spend so much time offloading. Enter: the Seagate Portable External Hard Drive; it comes in four sizes, is able to store 1 to 5 terabytes of data, and is super compact for easy packing.

Spinbrush Pro Clean Battery-powered Toothbrush

Here's a PSA to all electric toothbrush users: Even if you buy a toothbrush that’s compatible with local outlets, you will certainly not always have a place to charge it. That being said, I now travel with this battery-powered toothbrush and plenty of head replacements; it’s not as bulky as a full electric toothbrush setup and still gets the job done. Not to mention that it's easy to replace if I forget it or misplace it.

REI Co-op Ruckpack 18 Recycled Daypack

A small daypack is handy for flights and short hikes. This 18-liter one by REI Co-op has held up to years of wear and tear — it’s seen the wet bottoms of kayaks, multiple major sunscreen and bug spray spills, and too many trails to count. The recycled ripstop nylon is surprisingly durable, and the padded straps are comfortable on my shoulders for long periods of time. I'm also a fan of the hip strap that equally distributes the weight of the backpack to alleviate pressure on my bag.

Lena Sensitive Menstrual Cup

Packing a reusable menstrual cup is an absolute must for anyone with a period traveling long-term. When I started traveling, there was only one main menstrual cup brand, but shoppers now have dozens upon dozens to choose from. My only advice: find one you like before you go traveling. I'm a fan of this one from Lena, which is leak-proof for up to 12 hours, sensation-free (meaning that you can't feel it once it's inserted), and specially designed for those who struggle with bladder sensitivities, cramps, and more.

Revolut Multi-currency Card

I'll admit that I am a negligent financial planner when it comes to travel rewards and multi-currency cards, but this (free!) Revolut card saved me from a boatload of transaction fees. You can hold, transfer, and convert your money into up to 140 currencies, keeping multiple currencies on your card at once. It’s free to transfer to other Revolut accounts, and I found the conversion fees to be reasonable (they're usually under 1 percent).

Patagonia Lightweight Synchilla Snap-T Fleece Pullover

This pullover is possibly the warmest thing that I own. It saved me from traveling to cooler climates with super-bulky coats and sacrificing precious luggage space to them. I loved my first one so much that I now have it in three different colors. It’s made with ultra-light recycled polyester fleece and has a snap-button collar. The breast pocket is tiny — it has a more fashionable purpose than a functional one — but gives the pullover a cute pop of color and a crisp look to wear all around town.

Laundry Detergent Sheets

One of the best hacks that I have for long-term travel is to pack some laundry detergent sheets so you don’t have to purchase those overpriced mini boxes of detergent at the laundromat. Buying a full-sized jug of detergent is simply out of the question when you're backpacking, and as a bonus, these Tru Earth laundry strips are much better for the environment. A pack of 32 is good for 64 loads of laundry — a standard cycle takes only half a strip!

Ubeesize Portable Phone Tripod

Unless you bring a full camera setup, you’ll probably be documenting your travels with your phone. It can be tough to get pictures of yourself when you’re alone, but I was able to easily get the shot with this portable tripod. Its flexible legs are good for balancing on uneven surfaces and it's easy to use; once you get it set up and in the right spot, just set the delay timer on your phone camera and strike a pose.

NZ KOs Fiji in Hong Kong Sevens quarters. NZ vs Australia in men’s and women’s semis

  • Copy Link copied

HONG KONG (AP) — Defending champion New Zealand knocked out Fiji 19-12 with a last-minute try to reach the Hong Kong Sevens semifinals on Saturday.

Iconic Hong Kong’s most successful men’s teams, who have met in 15 finals including last year’s, didn’t produce another classic in the quarterfinals but it was typically tense.

Regan Ware brushed off two poor Fiji tackles to score the first try but Fiji was 12-7 ahead by halftime after tries by Ponepati Loganimasi from 80 meters out and Joji Nasova, who stood up his marker and glided past.

New Zealand leveled with two minutes to go when Xavier Tito-Harris screamed into the right corner. The winner came after New Zealand moved lineout ball right then left, stretching the Fiji defense to breaking point. Tone Ng Shiu dummied and crossed with seconds remaining in his first tournament since 2022 when he ruptured his ACL.

In the semifinals on Sunday, 12-time champion New Zealand will play six-time winner Australia, and France will face Ireland. France made the final once while Ireland never has.

New Zealand and Australia also meet in the women’s semis, after France tackles the United States.

Fiji backed into the quarterfinals as one of the two best third-placed pool teams. The 19-time Hong Kong champion, but not since 2019, upset France 14-7 in their last pool outing to edge out world series leader Argentina from the quarterfinals. Argentina missed a quarterfinals for the first time in 12 tournaments and 15 months.

France, without Antoine Dupont, accounted for Spain 24-10, and Australia won 15-0 against South Africa, which has never won Hong Kong. Nathan Lawson scored the first try and his jackal in the second half set up Maurice Longbottom for the clincher in the second half.

Ireland versus the U.S. was the Terry Kennedy and Kevon Williams show as they scored tries tit for tat. Kennedy sealed it in extra time with his hat trick. He scrambled back 10 meters to collect a loose pass, kicked upfield and won the race with two U.S. defenders to the ball in goal. Ireland won 24-19.

The women’s quarterfinals weren’t as close.

Titleholder New Zealand, which lost to France in the pool stage, beat Canada 26-5, France routed Ireland 31-7, the U.S. handled Fiji 33-7, and series leader Australia defeated Japan 12-0. Australia made sure while with six women, when replacement Teagan Levi quick-tapped from her own 22 and wasn’t touched.

New Zealand cracking down on ‘unsustainable’ migration levels with changes to Worker Visas

New Zealand has tightened its visa regulations in the face of “unsustainable” net migration levels in an effort to further protect jobs for its citizens.

The nation of 5.1 million has made immediate changes to is Accredited Employer Worker Visa, introducing new language and skill criteria for potential migrants and shortening the duration of work permits.

Minister of Immigration Erica Stanford announced the changes on Monday, emphasising the need to prioritise New Zealanders for employment, particularly in sectors where skill shortages do not exist.

This comes in the wake of 173,000 non-New Zealand citizens migrating to the country in 2023.

The nation of 5.1 million has made immediate changes to is Accredited Employer Worker Visa (AEWV), introducing new language and skill criteria for potential migrants and shortening the duration of work permits.

The government insists on prioritising employment for New Zealanders in fields without shortages.

Key modifications to the AEWV scheme include the introduction of a minimum English language proficiency requirement, a new minimum skill requirement that can be met through relevant work experience or qualifications, and a reduction in the maximum continuous duration of an AEWV from previously longer periods to now just three years.

Employers are mandated to ensure that migrants meet these new requirements before hiring. This includes declaring that no suitable and available New Zealand citizen applied for the position and justifying why any local applicants were not selected.

Additionally, employers are required to advertise job vacancies for a minimum of 21 days to give New Zealanders ample opportunity to apply.

Certain job roles, particularly in the transport and care sectors, will be exempt from some of these new requirements, acknowledging the unique demands and shortages in these areas.

The change comes after Australia implemented changes in 2023 for New Zealanders moving across the ditch to Australia.

Under the new legislation, all Special Category Visa holders will be able to directly apply for citizenship without becoming permanent residents first – provided they meet four-year residence and other eligibility requirements.

The change comes after Australia implemented changes in 2023 for New Zealanders moving across the ditch to Australia.

The changes will bring Australia’s treatment of New Zealanders in line with New Zealand’s treatment of Australians.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the change would further strengthen the long friendship between the two countries.

“Australia and New Zealand have a deep friendship, which has been forged through our history, shared values, and common outlook,” he said.

“As we mark the 50th anniversary of the trans-Tasman Travel Arrangement, I look forward to strengthening our relationship.

“We know that many New Zealanders are here on a Special Category Visa while raising families, working and building their lives in Australia. So I am proud to offer the benefits that citizenship provides.”

Countries Visited

Places visited, suggested duration, customizable itinerary, auckland – charms of a waterside city.

In Auckland, green hills stand above charming neighborhoods. After landing at New Zealand’s largest airport, you will be transferred to your luxurious accommodation on the water. You will be able to settle in to your contemporary accommodation before meeting your guide for a coffee. There are many things that you can do and places that you can visit in the city, but it all depends on how you are feeling after your flight. Whether indulging in a Maori experience at the national museum, a low-key dining experience on the water, or peering into one of the city’s volcanos, you will find a city that can mold to fit your mood.

What's Included:

Auckland – New Zealand’s Northern Coastlines

In Fiji, you will be provided with the quintessential South Pacific experience of white sand beaches and palm trees. Today’s tour will lead you into the wilderness, over mountain passes, and to completely untouched coastlines. These coastlines are not places for sunbathing, but places to absorb the rugged allure of a volcanic island. You can customize the day with different hikes and even enjoy a kayaking trip between bays. This coastline may be close to Auckland, but it can feel like you are thousands of miles from anywhere.

Rotorua – Hobbiton and Meeting a Maori Chief

An hour outside the city, you can get lost in rolling hills with nothing but sheep for company. Today, you will venture to the Hobbiton movie set. Nothing has changed since Peter Jackson was here. After arriving in Rotorua, you will have time to rest before exploring a geothermal park. A geyser may explode, shooting water in the air in 50-foot flumes. Mud bubbles may also spit before your eyes. A Maori chief will eventually greet you in traditional dress, shouting and hissing in what appears to be a show of power. It will actually be a demonstration of peace, and after accepting a feather, you will be invited to spend an evening with the community. A hangi dinner will follow, and you will dine on food that will be roasted underground on hot volcanic stones.

Rotorua – Helicopter Adventure to Active Volcanoes

Some of New Zealand’s active volcanoes can be visited on foot, but when you are short on time, it is better to venture by helicopter, especially to White Island, which is the country’s most active volcano. Today, you will enjoy incredible views as you fly over a few craters. You can even land on one of the craters for an immersive hiking experience. From here, you will fly to White Island, where you can walk on the crater rim and peer into the Earth. After flying back to Rotorua, you can spend the evening in one of the town’s natural hot springs, and the therapeutic waters will help ensure that you are fully refreshed for the Australian leg of your journey.

Sydney – Parramatta River Cruise

After flying over the Tasman Sea, this afternoon will be dedicated to the icons of Sydney. You will have the afternoon to stroll around and to discover how the famous sites are so close to each other. Sydney Opera House will shimmer brightly, the bridge will exude a steely allure, and Victorian arcades will demonstrate ornate and old-world beauty. As the afternoon fades, you will cruise down the Parramatta on a luxurious boat, admiring all the iconic sites from a different angle. Dinner will be served on the boat, and you will have a perfect view as the city lights are illuminated.

Sydney – Hunter Valley Vineyards

Idyllic vineyards fill the Hunter Valley, and row after row of grapevines glint in the morning light. This morning, you will fly here by helicopter and be led on a private vineyard tour with either an estate owner or winemaker. This will naturally lead to a private wine tasting session, which will be followed by a leisurely lunch that overlooks the vines. The afternoon will be flexible, and your guide can tailor two winery stops to your tastes. You can choose to explore a specific grape, visit boutique properties, or indulge in a tasting at the Hunter Valley’s most celebrated properties. Afterward, you will fly by helicopter back to Sydney for an evening that can take you in many directions.

Sydney – Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb

Sydney will begin to make more sense from the top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. You will venture step by step, ascending an iconic steel arch that divides the city in two. The bridge offers the best view of the city. After a morning on the bridge, the afternoon will be at your leisure. The classic place to visit here is Bondi Beach and watch the surf with a drink in hand. You may also want to visit Manly, where the beach is long and there is a more relaxed atmosphere.

Sydney – Wildlife Encounters and Aboriginal Insight

Today, you will be visiting a wildlife sanctuary home to orphaned and rescued animals. Here, wallabies hop around, a kangaroo mob grazes and moves in the distance, and koalas cling to eucalyptus branches. These famous animals are complemented by other unique animals, such as platypuses and emus. Being provided with an Aboriginal immersion is also an iconic part of the Australian experience. This enormous island was once home to 250 Aboriginal nations and 1,000 languages. Not that many remain today, but you can enjoy a glimpse of indigenous culture during an afternoon with two local guides. You will learn how to use art as a storytelling medium and dispel some of the many stereotypes that exist.

Kadavu Island – White-Sand Bliss in Fiji

From Sydney, you will fly directly to Nadi, which is Fiji’s main international airport. Once you land and collect your belongings, you will board a domestic flight to Kadavu, which is a tropical island that epitomizes the country’s slow-paced allure. Here, white sand glistens, and you can hear it squeak beneath your feet. Forests hang over the beaches, and the ocean water laps against the shore with seemingly every shade of turquoise fusing together. Nothing will be planned for today, so you can settle into the slow pace of life here and completely relax. Everything in Fiji runs on Fijian time, and that is perfect after eight days of active exploration in Australia and New Zealand.

Day  10 - 11

Kadavu Island – Escapism, Snorkeling, and Island Life

These two days on Kadavu will be mostly about doing nothing it all. You can wake up late, relax in the spa, wander along the beach, and feel the sun on your face. It is a small island, but not one of the smallest private islands. This means that there are things that you can do, including guided kayaking and ventures into the forest. The world’s third-longest reef extends just a few miles from the shore. This allows you the opportunity to discover what lies beneath the waves after exploring the best of the South Pacific above the ground. Snorkeling and scuba diving can be arranged through the lodge, and with two full days, you can enjoy this other aspect of South Pacific travel.

Nadi – Departure

After flying back to Nadi, you will transfer to your international flight home.

Detailed Description

The South Pacific offers an incredible diversity, and on this handcrafted vacation, you can combine the highlights of three countries into just 12 days. Volcanos dominate New Zealand’s North Island, where you can walk on lava fields and peer into hissing craters. Marsupials hop around Australia, and icons stand majestic along city rivers. Fiji is easy to preconceive but difficult to believe because it is an archipelago of exotic reef-formed islands that have been cast adrift in the Pacific. You will explore all three countries, and every day will be a new experience. During your luxurious vacation, you will travel from vineyards to barrier reefs and from climbing bridges to Maori communities.

Efficient transport connections are essential when combining all three countries into a single vacation. You do not have time to see it all because you would need months to do so. This vacation package is handcrafted around destinations that can provide you with a wealth of different experiences without requiring that you travel very far. Most activities will be privately guided, and some include helicopter transfers, so you can see more in less time. Four days in New Zealand and four days in Australia will be very active, so when you arrive in Fiji, you will be ready for the comfort and tranquility of an island break.

You will first fly to Auckland to experience a series of highlights along the waterfront, including black sand beaches and delightful neighborhoods. Then, you will stop in Hobbiton en route to Rotorua, where the actual Lord of the Rings films were shot. You will also meet a Maori chief and dine with their community. From here, you can explore two active volcanos, which will prove to be an incredible experience with the Earth’s inner workings. Sydney will provide you with a four-day base in Australia that will allow you to discover riverside icons, climb Sydney Harbour Bridge, hang out on Bondi Beach, and meet local Aborigines. From Sydney, you will also fly to the Hunter Valley vineyards and savor some close-up wildlife encounters. Kadavu Island is pure white sand and serenity, but it is also a gateway to some of the world’s finest snorkeling and diving, so you can discover the South Pacific above and below the water.
