Travel Subscription Services Are on the Rise—But Do They Really Save You Money?

Yearly Travel Subscriptions

Have you ever wished you had an assistant to research and book the best travel deals for you? From plane tickets to hotel stays, it can take many hours to comb through booking options for the right offer, especially in the new world of fast-disappearing travel deals . Enter travel subscription services, also known as travel clubs, which make it possible to offload that task for a set monthly or annual fee. Such online travel subscriptions have been rising in popularity—with several new services launched in recent weeks—but not all are created equal.

Companies including Tripadvisor and airfare alert site Scott's Cheap Flights have rolled out new travel club subscription services that offer deals exclusively for paying members. The new Tripadvisor Plus offers reduced hotel and activity bookings (as well as perks like free rental car upgrades and a Dollar Flight Club membership) for $99 per year. Scott's Cheap Flights' new Premium and Elite subscription tiers alert members to either economy or business-class fares for $49 or $200 per year, respectively. And then there are the top-dollar travel membership providers, like Inspirato , which offers luxury travel experiences for $600 to $2,500 per month, the latter of which includes all nightly rates, taxes, and fees in your monthly dues.

The main appeal of membership-structured deal clubs, experts say, is that they afford you deals that can't be listed for the general public online—rates that are typically better than any deal website's. “There are rates that are not to be promoted or distributed in a mass-market situation," says Mike Putman, CEO of Custom Travel Solutions , a business-travel provider that works with dozens of existing travel clubs. The services that provide those deals, Putman says, “require they only be distributed to membership organizations, which are paying for the right to them.” So it's clear you're paying for exclusive travel prices that often can't be found elsewhere.

But can you make your membership money back in order to actually save money, and quickly? For memberships that charge modest fees (about $200 or less per year), the answer seems to be yes. Willis Orlando, a member operations specialist for Scott's Cheap Flights' paid services, says it's his job to find the mistake fares that make a Premium or Elite membership worthwhile. “Many people don't have the time or energy to look for great airfare deals, but I'm fortunate enough to be paid to do exactly that,” Orlando says. He's part of a three-person team that hunts for flight deals, the best ones of which are a fraction of their usual price: Long-haul economy fares found for the service's Premium tier membership are typically around $500 or below as opposed to the normal average of about $800 dollars, Orlando says. Business- or first-class fare deals are usually around $1,200 to $1,700 instead of the typical $2,500 premium ticket.

While Scott's Cheap Flights is an airfare-only subscription, there are hotel and experience-geared subscriptions for those who fly less often. Abigail A., a Connecticut-based frequent traveler and blogger who signed up for Tripadvisor Plus this June, says she already made her $99 annual fee back in savings. Her first booking, a domestic work trip to New York , saved her about $200 on a weekend-long hotel stay, compared with prices listed elsewhere on the internet. Abigail says she chose Tripadvisor Plus because it offers cancellation (for a full refund ) within 90 days of signing up if you're not happy with the deals offered, but she's sticking with her membership thanks to the hotel savings she's found. Tripadvisor said in a statement that its Plus offering saves members an average of $350 per hotel stay, and that “most members recover the annual fee on their very first trip.”

“I'd recommend people [enroll in Tripadvisor Plus] around a time that they already have a trip they're planning, so that if you don't get your money back within those 90 days that you're planning something, you won't feel jipped,” she says.

And in the time of coronavirus, it's also important to consider losses you could see due to unexpected cancellations or illness, which Abigail says she is protected from separately of Tripadvisor Plus, through travel insurance that comes with her credit card . Putman, of Custom Travel Solutions, says that travel insurance and flexible booking options will typically depend on the service, and that some travel clubs or subscriptions do offer add-on insurance for an extra fee. For now Tripadvisor Plus recommends users acquire their own travel insurance, and most flight-deal subscriptions, including Scott's Cheap Flights, leave booking the actual reservation up to the member, which means cancellation terms vary depending on the airline.

But the major added bonus of enrolling in a travel club across-the-board, Putman says, is having someone to talk to should you need help with a booking as you return to travel, whether it's a flight cancellation the service can remedy for you or a hotel upgrade you're hoping to snag.

“Right now people really appreciate, when something goes wrong, if there's someone you can call,” Putman says. “Especially during a time when there's so much uncertainty in the marketplace and in travel overall.”

How To Start Your Own Travel Club – Part 1

How To Start Your Own Travel Club – Part 1

A travel club is an organization that plans group trips to various destinations around the world. Here’s why you should start your own and how to get started!

A   successful travel club comes as a result of a carefully orchestrated plan of-attack. The sales and marketing process is often feared, resented and avoided by just about everybody at one time or another. But it doesn’t have to be difficult, nor beyond the budgetary constraints of most folks. It does, however, demand a certain level of know-how and a modest degree of discipline. Selling, above all, demands consistency and has little room for half-hearted attempts.

In this three-part series we will layout everything you need to know about starting and marketing your own travel club. If this concept interests you further, there is an entire book dedicated to the subject called Traveling Tribes .

  • Part 1 will discuss the steps for implementing a successful travel club sales campaign.
  • Part 2 will address the four myths that prevent most sales & marketing professionals from becoming more successful.
  • Part 3 will highlight 11 Sales & Marketing Mistakes that need to be recognized and avoided at all costs.

Part 1: Why Group Travel Clubs Make Sense

  • Organizations are seeking new ways to connect with members, subscribers, customers or their communities
  • More people are traveling but want to avoid the hassles associated with planning your own trip
  • It’s more difficult than ever for consumers to make smart travel decisions with the proliferation of choices available
  • Travel in a group environment is an enjoyable, shared experience that builds bonds between you and your fellow travelers
  • Travel can satisfy an educational or organizational mission

Now that you have a better understanding of why travel clubs are important, you need to determine if the development of a travel club will broaden your appeal within desirable demographic. If you’re looking for new ways to create fun activities and help people become more active this might be worth a shot. If you’re looking for a new source of income, group travel trips can raise tens of thousands of dollars per year for your organization. If you are looking to travel for free, or at extremely discounted prices you can, thanks to generous group leader benefits.

What Types of Organizations Create Group Travel Clubs?

It’s safe to say that nearly all types of organizations can benefit from a travel club. Here are 10 top markets that have successfully implemented travel club concepts:

  • Restaurants & Bars
  • Associations
  • Specialty sports retailers
  • Theaters and Cultural Institutions
  • Colleges, universities and other learning institutions

Taking the Next Step…Implementing a Successful Travel Club Sales Campaign

Step 1. establish your “usp”.

This is your UNIQUE SELLING PROPOSITION. It addresses the question, “Why Should I Travel With Your Organization?” If you don’t know why I should hook my wagon to your horse, why should I take the time to figure it out?

“You are the most honest… hard working … brightest …cheapest… most savvy….most knowledgeable…..most fun….most creative……you know the right people … and you were born under the right sign”. Stay away from these textbook, dime-a-dozen responses. Winging glib replies to potentially interested travelers won’t get many people interested in you or your travel program.

Why would anyone in their right mind choose to sign-up for one of your trips is what you need to think about on an ongoing basis? Why you? Finding the answer to this question is going to be harder than it first appears. But the answer will be twice as important as you ever imagined.

Start by thinking about the likes and dislikes of your existing customers. Take a minute and jot down the thoughts that pop into your head in response to these seven questions below. Trust me. This time will be a very good start as you begin to fine-tune your marketing approach by design.

  • What travel-related problems are they concerned with?
  • Are you in position to make their lives more interesting, exciting and enjoyable?
  • How will you save your customers time, money… and effort?
  • How can you help them minimize bad travel related choices?
  • How will you minimize their frustrations?
  • Will you provide them an easier way to experience the world?
  • How can you help educate them so that they can make more effective travel- related decisions in the future?

Step 2. Define Your Territory

Avoid chasing rainbows.  Is it a coincidence that today’s professional athlete earns a tremendous amount of money working within a defined, bordered, clearly marked playing field? Their athletic abilities can be focused within a specific area of play. They know exactly where they need to be at all times. Is it a coincidence that today’s major corporations hire national sales managers…regional managers… territory managers… and product managers? Top-level management also knows that their finest sales people can’t be all places at all times. They make their living between clearly drawn boundaries. This is the way winners do it. This is the way winners win.

In order to compete effectively today, regardless of the industry or specific product or service, you must place yourself in an imaginary arena where you too can focus on specific objectives, goals and potential clients. Failure to narrow your “market” to a definable area will do nothing but confuse your thinking and introduce a “gray area” thereby diluting your sales effort.

It is virtually impossible to be all things to all people. But it is easy to satisfy the needs and wants of a specifically targeted group – which falls within a specifically defined territory, which has a specifically defined need, or problem. A territory is a defined location that you can envision … and understand… and develop a reputation in. Of course you will expand your territory in time, but begin by making it small enough to work for you. For the sake of this report, your territory can involve geographic boundaries or it can consist of a defined demographic profile of customer.

Step 3. A Strategy For Launching Your Travel Club

The next step is to decide how you are going to approach the candidates, or prospects for your travel club. Rather than to quickly read through this information, let’s take a minute to record your initial thoughts for each question below:

  • How are you going to introduce yourself?
  • Can you improve the comfort level?
  • How will you improve your awareness level?
  • How are you going to communicate with them?
  • How can you going to create an environment where they will warmly invite you in and give you their attention while listening to what you have to say?

Narrowing the many marketing possibilities down to the few that make the most sense to you … to your personality… to your budget … and to your time frame becomes a very important decision.

The options include direct mail, e-newsletters, cold calling, social media, press releases, seminars, trade shows, networking, referral chains, writing articles, and public speaking.

It is immaterial which strategy you decide to use. When administered properly, all marketing gambits have been proven to work. But regardless of your final decision, you must commit to a consistent approach.

Making the list is simple. You must now decide how often you are going to utilize these tactics. This of course will be determined by many personal factors. Not the least being your budget. An acceptable guideline: Be prepared to contact each of your prospects a minimum of seven (7) times in each eighteen (18) month period. You should feel comfortable investing the time and effort to contact each prospect a minimum of 7 times.

Step 4. Develop a Traveler Profile

This will save you many hours of needless frustration and “wheel-spinning”. Not every prospect will bring joy to your club. In fact, many travelers have a propensity to create tension, stress and unnecessary aggravation. It is my belief that these particular prospects do not contribute to your overall club mission statement. Don’t voluntarily invite negative influences into your world. There are plenty of people who will appreciate the benefits of a well-run trip. Your job is to find them. But it will be extremely difficult to find them if you don’t know who you are looking for. i.e. the profile. This is a list of traits and qualities that you are attracted to. Call it your wish list. Of course you may need to work with a few people or couples who do not meet your requirements, but you will do so with your eyes open.

What are some of the criteria that you might decide to list? Location. Hobbies. Age. Interests. Income Level. Past travel experience. Group activity. Size of travel budget. Pleasant attitude. You know what qualities you admire in people. Be on the lookout for people who exhibit these traits. And since people hang out with people like themselves, you can start working down the “friend-chain.”

Once you know what kind of member you are looking for, finding them will become much easier and your prospect/client database will grow much faster.

Step 5. Create a Prospect List

Many club organizers confuse a prospect list with a suspect list.  Just about every person, in the beginning stages, looks like a “suspect”. In most cases, if the person can fog a mirror, they qualify as a “suspect”. All “suspects” however, do not have the time or the money to leave town. Therefore, not all suspects make good prospects. Your job is to isolate and identify without doubt, the true prospects: those with time, money and itchy feet.

The easy way to do this is to list people who fall within your designated territory (see step 2.) Then take each suspect and gauge them by how they stack up to your profile (see step 4). Due to your time constraints, focus your attention on those who you feel will produce favorable results required to keep your group active. Begin by making an attractive list of qualified prospects.

Step 6. Write A Script

It is all too common for club organizers to feel that their gift to the organization is their “gift for gab”. They take great pride in having the ability to “wing it” through difficult situations. My advice – take the time to write down the words you feel comfortable with when meeting someone for the first time. Then write a back-up sentence. And a third. Then a fourth. You will soon develop a script to center your discussions around. Chances are you will drift away from the script as your confidence builds. This is only natural. But until then, you should know exactly what information you want to convey.

Actors wouldn’t think of taking the stage without learning their lines. Comedians rehearse “bits.” Sports teams practice set plays. The real professional can ad-lib when he/she has to without the audience becoming aware of the change in pace. BUT, it all starts with the written word. Write a script, and then write answers to every question you encounter that makes you feel uncomfortable.

These six steps will get you off and running in the right direction. They are basic… yet vitally important for the success of your project.  If you take the time to do some planning before plunging into building your group’s activities, you will become one of the more successful entrepreneurs in this part of the industry.

By joining one of these clubs, you can broaden your horizons, meet new people who share your passion for travel and explore this beautiful state without breaking the bank!

Historical fact:

Travel clubs first emerged in Michigan during the early 1900s, as a way for affluent individuals to explore other parts of the state and country with like-minded companions. These early travel clubs typically organized trips by rail or steamship, and focused on cultural destinations such as museums, art galleries, and historical landmarks.

take a trip club

What Are Senior Travel Clubs? And Should You Join One?

What is a senior travel club, anyway? A scam? A great way to save on travel? A way to meet potential travel companions? Or something else entirely?

It turns out that senior travel clubs can be any of these things.

What Are Senior Travel Clubs?

Many travel clubs charge an annual membership fee. Typically, the membership fee is modest, and provides you with access to members-only publications, information, discounts or online travel content. A few travel clubs charge an initiation fee and annual dues.

Before you decide to join a senior travel club, take a few minutes to find out which type of travel club you are considering.

Travel Groups

For seniors who are not interested in solo travel, joining a travel club can help them find interesting trips to take.  Some senior travel clubs exist for the sole purpose of organizing trips for members. Trip lengths and destinations vary.

Travel Information and Social Gathering

Other senior travel clubs are social in nature. Members are invited to attend monthly or quarterly meetings, which may involve social time and, possibly, a presentation from a member or a travel professional. This type of senior travel club would be a good fit for someone who is looking for inspiration, new friends or potential travel companions.

Transportation or Activity-Specific Travel

RV owners will be familiar with this type of travel club; in addition to clubs for owners of all types of RVs, you can also join a travel club for owners of your make or class of RV. Train enthusiasts can also join travel clubs just for them.

If your interests lie elsewhere, you will probably be able to find a travel club with like-minded members, such as a travel club for seniors who enjoy outdoor adventure.

Women-Only Travel

While there are many travel providers that organize women-only trips, it can be a bit more difficult to find a travel club created just for women. Thelma & Louise is one of the best-known online women-only travel clubs. Members share travel stories, plan trips and meetups and look for travel companions via Thelma & Louise’s website.

Money-Saving Club

Some travel clubs are formed to help members save money. Boondockers Welcome and The Affordable Travel Club , for example, help travelers arrange free RV parking (Boondockers Welcome) or lodging (The Affordable Travel Club) at members’ homes.

Travel Club Scams

Some so-called travel clubs are scams designed to part you from your hard-earned money. In some cases, scammers offer free airfare or hotel stays, often by postcard or at a “travel seminar,” but require you to pay a reservation fee in advance. When you try to book a trip, your dates are never available, and the scammer keeps your fee payment. Another version of this scam involves restrictive terms and conditions that prevent you from ever actually booking a trip.

Other travel clubs run by scammers charge thousands of dollars in upfront membership fees, promising travel discounts or free travel. Instead, the scammers disappear with your money and you are left with nothing.

To protect yourself against scammers, never agree to join a travel club if a salesperson is pressuring you to do so.

Get all the information about the club in writing and take it home.  A reputable travel club will willingly give you the information you request, without pressuring you to join.

Read every word. Do an online search for the name of the club and the names of its owners. If possible, have an attorney read the contract; in the absence of an attorney, ask a family member or friend to read the document.

Never give your credit card number or other financial information to a travel club representative unless you are joining the club. Pay dues, fees and travel costs by credit card so that you can dispute them if problems occur.

Remember, if something seems too good to be true, it is.

Where to Find Senior Travel Clubs

Start your search for a senior travel club in your own community. Senior centers and recreation departments often sponsor senior travel clubs or organize outings for local seniors. You can also do an online search; this approach is particularly helpful if you are looking for an activity-specific travel club.

Alternatives to Senior Travel Clubs

If you are reluctant to pay annual dues or a membership fee to belong to a travel club, perhaps a well-organized tour is a better choice. You can find women-only, high adventure and other themed tours quite easily, either through a travel agent or online.

You may be able to find travel meetups and presentations in your local community, perhaps through a church or community center. If you are mainly interested in meeting people who enjoy travel or getting travel information, you may be able to do so without paying money to join a club.

Other places to learn about vacation destinations and meet people who love to travel include colleges – look for noncredit courses – as well as libraries and travel shows.

Have you ever joined a senior travel club? Why did you join? How did things work out? Share your experiences in the comments section below.

Two Siblings Take an Emotional Road Trip For an Intervention in 'Little Brother' Trailer [Exclusive]

Next month, Gravitas Ventures is bringing its next acclaimed indie feature to theaters in Sheridan O’Donnell 's directorial debut Little Brother . The distribution outlet acquired the film earlier this month after it turned heads and earned the Audience Award at the 2023 Atlanta Film Festival for its heartfelt story about two siblings on a road trip to an intervention. The Half of It star Daniel Diemer plays the titular younger brother, Jake, who is tasked with driving his troubled older brother Pete ( Philip Ettinger ) from Albuquerque to Seattle for a family intervention following his suicide attempt. Ahead of the release, Collider can exclusively share the official trailer that shows how the two wildly different siblings clash during their trip yet ultimately find common ground.

When the footage first opens, the focus is not on Jake or Pete, but on their concerned father, played by Academy Award winner J.K. Simmons . He calls Jake for an update on how Pete is doing and a brief montage of a drinking binge after leaving the hospital shows that he's not in a good place. Moreover, he's not receptive to his brother's initial pleas to drive with him to visit their parents nor does he tolerate Jake's accusations that his mental health is an excuse for some of his bad behavior. Seattle won't wait though, and they get on the road where the two finally begin to better understand each other . Though Jake doesn't have experience with the kind of depression Pete is going through and their history has left a lot of pain between them, he does his best to connect with his brother, leading to a few happy moments during the trip where they get to have a typical sibling bond. It's a heartwarming show of love and support that demonstrates how much they really care about each other even at their lowest moments.

The dynamic between Diemer and Ettinger will be the focus of Little Brother , but Simmons will also get plenty of chances to shine as their dad if the trailer is any indication. Known for his wide range of roles from various Spider-Man titles to Damien Chezelle 's Whiplash and the animated adaptation of Robert Kirkman 's Invincible , he'll show a more tragic side in the upcoming drama as a father torn apart by his son's behavior. Acting opposite him as the brothers' mother will also be an Emmy nominee in Thirtysomething 's Polly Draper .

'Little Brother' Is a Deeply Personal Story for O'Donnell

In addition to directing, O'Donnell also penned the story for his first movie. Although this will be his feature debut, he has tackled his fair share of short films before, as well as a stint behind the camera for the community theater mockumentary series Thank You, 5 . It's fitting that Little Brother will be his first though, because it's such a very personal story based on his own experiences with a close friend who tragically took their own life. "I wrote the film to capture their warmth and humor and attempt to understand their mental health journey, all of which I hope deeply connects with viewers,” he said in an official statement. “We’re grateful to Gravitas Ventures for championing the film and are thrilled to work with them on bringing ‘Little Brother’ to audiences.”

Little Brother is slated to hit theaters in September. Check out the exclusive trailer in the player above.

A private suite at PS at LAX

Getting through airport security lines can be a drag, especially during holiday weekends and a pandemic that has increased the demand for more seclusion when traveling. PS (formerly known as Private Suite) is designed for first and business class travelers who are seeking privacy and convenience, allowing them to bypass LAX altogether.

Travelers check into a private terminal where they can relax in a fully-stocked luxury private suite that includes complimentary in-suite meals catered by h.wood Group , as well as additional services upon request such as in-suite massages, manicures and detailing services for personal cars. PS also provides a designated on-site TSA and Customs agent for expedited screening.

Upon boarding, travelers are transported across the tarmac directly to their aircraft in a BMW 7 Series sedan. Earlier this year, the Salon at PS launched, which features a new full-service lounge at the terminal for travelers who want the same benefits of PS but seek a more social experience.

Membership cost: Annual membership costs $4,500, which gives members access to a preferred rate of $3,250 for a one-way Suite experience for up to four travelers. The Salon is available to members and non-members for $695 per use per person.

Vail Grand View Great Room

Inspirato is a subscription-based luxury travel service that gives members exclusive access to over 150,000 luxury vacation homes and resorts around the world that are staffed by Inspirato. With the Inspirato Pass, you automatically get the benefits of Inspirato Club plus nightly rates are already factored into the price of membership, so you can book as many vacations as possible in one month with one active reservation at a time. There is also no long-term commitment, so you can cancel the membership at any time.

Membership cost: Inspirato Club membership is $600/month plus a $600 enrollment fee and you pay nightly rates as you go. Inspirato Pass is a flat rate of $2,500/month which includes all hotel stays.

Members of Priority Pass receive access to over 1,300 airport lounges globally, including several airline lounges such as Virgin Atlantic, Air France and Turkish Airlines. However, for expedited clearance through security screenings, TSA Pre-Check or Global Entry are still required.

Timeshares vs. Vacation Clubs vs. Travel Clubs

10 Min Read | Apr 4, 2023

Ramsey Solutions

These days, most people have heard enough horror stories about timeshares to know you should run for the hills whenever someone tries to sell you one.

When it comes to vacation clubs and travel clubs, though, things are a little different. Those programs have started popping up a lot over the last few years, and they’re billed as the way to achieve R and R. Resorts, airlines and other companies in the travel industry advertise these members-only clubs as great alternatives to timeshares and play up their discounted travel options .

But here’s the truth: Vacation clubs and travel clubs are, by definition, timeshares. There are some differences between them—but nothing that makes them any better. And in some ways, they’re even worse. You’ll get all the restrictions, money traps and sneaky fees of a regular timeshare —but wait! There’s more! You’ll get some extra ones too—including creative new ones you’ve probably never heard of.

Now, all that might surprise you if you’ve heard only good things about these clubs or you’re thinking of buying a membership. So let’s dig into the details. We’ll show you how these clubs work, how they waste a ton of your money, and why you’re better off keeping your distance.

How Timeshares and Clubs Work

A timeshare is a single property you visit year after year. You purchase a time-sharing agreement, then pay maintenance fees. After all that, you own the right to vacation at the property during preset times, usually a week or two each year.

Not only does the insane cost of owning a timeshare make it a complete rip-off (thanks to a boatload of hidden fees and restrictions), but the timeshare industry is also full of fraud and often uses unethical sales practices. Stay far away.

Vacation Clubs

A vacation club is a type of timeshare. But instead of paying to use a single property, like a traditional timeshare, you get access to multiple properties in multiple locations. Don’t be fooled though: Vacation clubs stink just as badly as timeshares since they also come with a ton of fees and restrictions.

Travel Clubs

Travel clubs are a type of vacation club. They have a lot of the same expenses and destinations, but members of a travel club vacation together. The company gets them group rates, so they usually pay less for memberships and fees than vacation club members.

The Risks of Vacation Clubs and Travel Clubs

Timeshares, vacation clubs and travel clubs all sell people the idea of a fairy-tale vacation at a bargain price, but these “dream” vacations come with nightmarish problems. Here are some of the biggest:

  • They limit where you can travel. A lot of vacation club companies make it sound like you can travel anywhere in the world using their plan, but it’s just not true. Sure, vacation clubs give you more options than a traditional timeshare, but you can only travel to locations where the vacation club company has a property. And even the biggest companies don’t have properties everywhere.
  • They’ve got restricted travel dates. Even though you technically “own” a timeshare or club membership after you buy it, you can’t use it whenever you want. That’s because you have to work around the other owners’ schedules and any blackout dates set in place by the timeshare company. No thanks.
  • They don’t always let you bring your family. Here’s an area where vacation and travel clubs are worse than timeshares. Did you know many clubs only give the membership to the person who paid for it? That means, unlike with a timeshare, you can’t bring anyone you want along for a trip to some club destinations. And depending on the club, these restrictions can also apply to your immediate family!
  • They’re hard to get out of. This one’s the kicker. It can be really difficult to get out of a timeshare or club membership if you decide you don’t like it. There’s a reason one of the first things you’ll see if you search the internet for “timeshares” is a list of companies dedicated to helping folks get out of them.

Vacation Club Costs

Not only do timeshares, vacation clubs and travel clubs have a bunch of confusing risks and restrictions, but they also charge a ton of fees! Let’s take a look at all the costs involved in owning a timeshare or club membership, many of which are totally ridiculous. They include:

  • Initial purchase price
  • Financing costs
  • Closing costs
  • Maintenance fees
  • Point redemption fees

Initial Purchase Price

This is the actual cost of purchasing ownership in a timeshare, vacation club or travel club. It’s the biggest expense in owning a timeshare, but once you pay it, the timeshare is yours. Of course, there are plenty of other fees you’ll still have to pay even after dropping cash on the initial purchase price—more on those fees in a moment.

money icon

Pay off debt fast and save more money with Financial Peace University .

The average initial purchase price of a seven-day timeshare is $24,140. 1 With vacation and travel clubs, the price depends on the company you’re buying from. For example, Disney Vacation Club’s typical initial purchase price starts around $32,000. 2 A Hilton Grand Vacations membership averages $22,000. 3 And some vacation clubs also charge an annual membership fee on top of the initial purchase price.

Financing Costs

Now, most folks who buy timeshares don’t have $20,000 just lying around, so they wind up financing the initial purchase price. That means they make a down payment and turn the remaining amount into debt that they pay off in monthly installments. It’s just like a car loan or a student loan —but way worse.

Why? Because timeshare financing usually carries a ridiculous interest rate. Take Disney Vacation Club as an example. While they advertise interest rates that start at 10% (which is still terrible, by the way), the fine print will tell you that some members could get slapped with an 18% interest rate! 4 That’s almost as bad as credit cards —which, for comparison, have a 20.4% average interest rate. 5

So, while a monthly payment of $400–500 may not sound like a big deal, you’ll be racking up interest the whole time. That’s a huge part of how these companies make money.

Closing Costs

Are you ready to pay your initial purchase fee and jump into vacationing? Hold your horses, partner. There’s still more money to fork over.

Next, you’ll pay closing costs to finalize the sale of the club membership or timeshare. And closing costs aren’t cheap—close to $1,000 in some cases. For example, Disney Vacation Club sometimes charges over $850 for closing costs. 6

There aren’t even this many hoops to jump through at the National Dog Show!

Maintenance Fees

One of the “perks” of owning a timeshare or club membership is that, even though you technically own part of the property, you don’t have to worry about cleaning or other maintenance when you’re not using it. It seems like a great benefit, but don’t think for a second you won’t pay for it.

Maintenance fees are timeshare and vacation club companies’ way of charging you for the upkeep of their properties, and these suckers are expensive. The average timeshare annual maintenance fee is a whopping $1,000. 7

Here’s the kicker with maintenance fees: You have to pay them as long as you own the timeshare. That’s right—even if you pay cash for your timeshare or membership, or pay off your loan, you’ll still owe annual maintenance fees.

Alicia, a member of our Ramsey Baby Steps Community on Facebook, found that out when she paid off her vacation club membership in 2021. She called the club company after making her final payment and asked if she’d still owe her $875 maintenance fee. Spoiler: She did.

“I paid it off two years early, then I asked, ‘Do I still have to pay the maintenance fees?’ And they said yes,” Alicia said. “I get irritated when we have to hit ‘submit’ on the payment.”

Point Redemption Fees

Somehow, there’s still another fee left to go over, and this one is the most ridiculous of them all. A lot of vacation clubs operate based on a points system. Each year, members are awarded a set number of points. Then, when a member wants to take a vacation, they redeem those points to book time at a property.

Here’s the problem: Sometimes, vacation clubs charge their members a fee to redeem their points. That’s right—you have to pay even more money just to use the points that you already paid for! It’s complete nonsense, right? And yet, plenty of people sign up for these plans year after year.

This is just dumb, folks. Don’t fall for this garbage.

Are Vacation Clubs Worth It?

No! One more time for the people in the back: No! One more time for everyone else who still didn’t hear: No!

Even if you stumble onto a timeshare or club that isn’t a scam, it’s still a horrible financial decision. Let’s take a look at why.

For this example, we’ll say you bought a vacation club membership and agreed to pay a $400 monthly payment over 15 years with a $1,000 annual maintenance fee. Over the course of a year, that comes out to $5,800.

What if, instead of sending $5,800 to the vacation club company, you just bought a $3,000 vacation yourself and kept the remaining $2,800? That $3,000 would probably buy you a pretty nice vacation, and you’d have a ton of extra money to put toward other important financial goals like getting out of debt or saving for retirement .

In fact, $2,800 invested annually for 15 years in good mutual funds with a 10% rate of return comes out to nearly $100,000, according to our investment calculator . So, if you bought a vacation club, you’d be wasting almost $100,000 of investment potential on nothing.

Do you see how the math just doesn’t make any sense here? Especially when you consider that those numbers didn’t include membership fees, point redemption fees, closing costs, or interest. And don’t forget, clubs and timeshares almost always cover only your lodging—your costs for food, travel and attractions will likely only be discounted (not free) with these programs.

At their worst, timeshares and vacation clubs are fraudulent scams. At their best, they’re complete rip-offs. This is a lose-lose scenario if we’ve ever seen one.

The Better Way to Pay for Vacations

Like we just talked about, saving up and paying cash for your vacations is a much better way to travel than buying a timeshare or club membership—and it’s not close. But saving money isn’t always easy, and it can be super difficult if you aren’t living on a budget by making a plan for your money at the beginning of every month.

If you’ve never made a budget before—or if you want a tool that makes it a whole lot easier—downloading the free EveryDollar app is a great place to start. EveryDollar lets you set up a budget in minutes so you can get a jump start on saving up for that next big trip. Plus, the premium version allows you to connect your bank account to the app so it automatically tracks your transactions.

So, instead of dealing with these timeshare and vacation club companies, give them the cold shoulder by getting on a budget and saving up to pay for vacations without them.

Timeshares and travel vacation clubs: What to know before you join one

Buyer’s remorse. That describes too many consumers who get talked into spending thousands of dollars on a timeshare or travel vacation club, only to find that it is not right for them. They are now locked into a long-term commitment of ever-increasing fees and need help figuring out what to do.

This article will help you determine if a timeshare or travel vacation club is right for you and how to weigh the benefits and risks of membership. And if you are a timeshare owner wanting to get out of your contractual agreement, we have some suggestions.

Fraudulent companies targeting the timeshare resale market have multiplied over the last several years. We’ll help you recognize what is a scam and what is legitimate.

What’s the difference between a timeshare and a vacation club?

A timeshare is a type of vacation property where the owner shares the costs with other owners. The timeshare rules are specified in an agreement. A timeshare typically gives the owner a specific number of weeks per year to use. Owners cannot modify the timeshare or use it whenever they desire.

Timeshares are usually spacious and well-maintained condos, hotels, villas, or apartments on a resort property. The concept originated when the condominium industry needed to get rid of excess inventory. Amenities often include golf courses, tennis courts, pools, gyms, beach access, and more.

A travel vacation club is also a type of timeshare. Many hotel chains and resorts tried to set themselves apart from the stigma attached to timeshares by calling their timeshares travel vacation clubs.

Resorts such as Disney Vacation Club, Club Wyndham, Hilton Grand Vacations, and the Marriott Vacation Club consider the owners of their timeshares as travel vacation club members. Members are guaranteed an annual vacation at one of the network resorts throughout the U.S. and abroad.

Timeshares have expanded to luxury campsites, single-family homes, lodges, private jets, and yurts.

It’s important to note that a timeshare is not an investment, and you do not own the property. It is an illiquid asset that will continue to lose value.  (I’ll explain this in a minute.)

The average cost of a timeshare/travel vacation club

When you buy a timeshare, you pay a specific amount for the initial purchase and are then responsible for recurring annual fees. According to the American Resort Development Association (ARDA), the average price of a timeshare is $24,140. You’ll also have to pay closing costs.

Timeshare resales often sell for substantially less than the original purchase price. They are likely to continue to decrease in value from the date of purchase.

Annual dues/maintenance fees

Along with the upfront cost of a timeshare, you’ll have to pay recurring annual dues/maintenance fees. These dues cover the cost of maintenance, which typically includes operating expenses, repairs, insurance premiums, and a percentage of real estate taxes. The amount of dues is determined by the size of the unit and the location. The average dues/maintenance fees are currently around $1,000 per year – and they continue to escalate.

If the property requires an upgrade or unexpected repairs, the timeshare owners may get charged a special assessment fee.

Financing a timeshare/travel vacation club

If you plan to finance your timeshare through your bank or the property owner, you could pay extremely high-interest rates (as high as 20% or so) along with closing costs. You will not qualify for a conventional mortgage because there is no collateral – you do not own the property.

It is not a good idea to finance the dues/maintenance fees. Only buy a timeshare if you can afford to pay these fees. Remember that you will continue paying annual fees as long as you own the timeshare.

How to survive a timeshare/travel club presentation – without signing a contract

Unfortunately, some timeshare companies have given the industry a bad reputation through their hard-sell tactics and lack of transparency.

Timeshare companies entice potential buyers by offering a free vacation, cruise, or some other type of incentive and often push participants into signing the contract before they leave. They may use guilt or other dishonorable practices to accomplish this task.

Many participants feel pressured into buying a timeshare or travel club and later feel trapped .

It’s important to note that there are reputable timeshare companies with professional presentations that are transparent about what they offer. These companies do not strong-arm participants into buying, so read reviews of the timeshare company you’re considering before taking the plunge.

If you attend a presentation and have an interest in buying a timeshare, take the contract home and read it thoroughly. Check the accuracy of the figures given and compare those costs to what you plan to spend on vacations over the next several years.

It is not a good idea to sign the contract at the presentation, no matter how much pressure you receive. If the so-called great deal is legit, it will still be there when you are ready to sign later. If the timeshare company isn’t willing to extend the deal so you can do a thorough review, view that as a warning sign.

Signing a timeshare contract is a long-term, perhaps lifelong financial commitment.

What if you sign the contract and then have buyer’s remorse?

According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), most states provide a mandated rescission period (usually around three to ten days). If you purchase a timeshare at a presentation and then decide you made a mistake, you can get out of the contract within the allowable time frame of that state. The rescission option only applies to timeshares that are sold in the U.S. There are no rescission periods in most other countries.

At Consumer Rescue, we emphasize the importance of reading the entire contract before you sign (See: Why you should never report a credit card transaction as fraudulent when it isn’t ).

Do not rely on the words of the salesperson. The contract always trumps the spoken word.

Check the contract for a cancellation clause. A fair contract often provides 24 hours to a week for buyers to change their minds.

If you decide to cancel within the cancellation period, notify the property owner immediately by phone. Follow up with an email and a written cancellation sent via certified mail with a return receipt request. You may need proof of the date that you canceled.

Leased timeshare/travel vacation club (right to use)

There are two types of timeshares: leased timeshares and deeded timeshares.

Leased timeshare

One of the more common timeshares is where you lease the right to use a property or a group of properties for a specified length of time each year – typically for a week.

  • The contract could be for a fixed week each year or a floating week that allows you to change your vacation dates annually.
  • The developer holds the deed, and resales may be more restrictive.
  • Many contracts have an expiration date of anywhere between 20 and 99 years. Once the contract expires, you lose your right to use the timeshare.
  • Leased timeshare owners are responsible for the annual dues/maintenance fees.
  • Some timeshares offer extended stay options beyond a week.

It’s important to understand that you don’t own the property and will not have any say in fees or management decisions. If the property owner goes bankrupt, you will likely lose your right to stay at your timeshare.

Shared deeded ownership timeshare

A deeded timeshare is a real estate purchase where you own a percentage of the property according to the time allotment (number of weeks) purchased.

  • You receive a deed for your share of the property with no contractual end date.
  • Ownership is for life and you can pass it down to your heirs.
  • You may receive some tax advantages, such as deducting the interest paid for financing and the portion you pay for property taxes.
  • A deeded timeshare usually comes with member voting rights.
  • Deeded timeshare owners are responsible for the annual dues/maintenance fees.

Contract options of a timeshare/travel vacation club

Timeshares offer different contract options. Many of these contracts come with an expiration date of between 20 and 99 years. The timeshare reverts to the property owner – not you – upon expiration. Deeded timeshares do not have an expiration date.

Point system contract

The point system is one of the more popular contract options. The points represent timeshare ownership.

Many resort timeshares/travel vacation clubs operate on a point system. This option provides added flexibility for the members (owners) by allowing them to stay at resorts within the network by paying with points.

To become a member (owner) of a timeshare/travel vacation club, you make an initial payment that buys you a specified number of points. The resort determines the cost of the points, and it is subject to change.

For example, Disney Vacation Club says on its website, “To become a member, you’ll purchase a real estate interest in a Disney Vacation Club Resort, which is represented by an annual allotment of vacation points. You’ll use your vacation points to book accommodations at Disney Vacation Club Resorts–or enjoy thousands of other vacation properties around the world–for decades to come.”

Disney’s purchase price for a travel vacation club starts at $32,550 for 150 vacation points. Closing costs are based on the resort and will cost upwards of $631. The lowest annual dues/maintenance fees start at around $1,104.

Members (owners) can redeem points at vacation properties within the network or exchange them for cruises, guided tours, and other adventure travel options. The number of points required for a stay is based on the resort’s location, the travel dates, the length of stay, and the location and type of resort.

Club members can purchase more points for more expensive locations or longer trips. They can also borrow points from their future years to fund a vacation. Unused points can carry over to the following year. Depending on the contract, points can expire if there is minimal to no travel activity in a specified period (such as two years).

Fixed week contract

You are given exclusive rights to use the same unit during a designated week each year. For example, you may choose the first week of June to be your annual week.

You may have the option to trade weeks with other property owners through an exchange company. This process may sound simple enough, but it often becomes complicated. You’ll have to plan about a year ahead if you hope to swap dates with another owner. There will also be additional fees when trading dates.

If you prefer to go to the same place at the same time every year, a fixed week contract may suit you.

Floating week contract

You have flexibility in choosing the week (within a predetermined period or season) when you want to use the timeshare. These dates can change annually. Reservations are typically on a first-come, first-served basis, so planning a year ahead is recommended. Traveling during a high-demand season or around holidays will increase the cost of the contract.

Reserving the time slot you prefer may take some work on your end. There are a lot of other timeshare owners that may be vying for the exact location at the same time.

Pros and cons of buying a timeshare/travel vacation club

Before you take the plunge and sign the contract – research thoroughly. It bears repeating that the contract is a long-term agreement. You will limit your vacation plans to a specific resort for the next 20 to 99 years (except for deeded timeshares with no expiration date). It will also be an expensive outlay of cash initially and every year after that – whether you use it or not.

The timeshare sales presentation will try to make you believe that you will save thousands of dollars on vacations over the next several years. Put their figures to the test by compiling a cost comparison analysis yourself.

Include realistic amounts of what you plan to spend on vacations over the next several years, including airfare, food, car rentals, tours, miscellaneous expenses, and lodging. Compare those figures with the cost of owning a timeshare (breaking the costs down annually) and include all other travel expenses (minus lodging). You might be surprised.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, you’ll usually find a timeshare is more expensive overall than the average vacation.

The exciting thing about the future is that it is a mystery. That vacation spot or resort property you love visiting now may become less enticing in a few years.

If you want to avoid the commitment of a timeshare, and there’s a particular destination you enjoy going to every year, consider renting a vacation home. If you find a rental home you like, book it annually.

Pros of buying a timeshare

  • The resort properties are typically well-maintained and offer spacious accommodations, including a kitchen, one or more bedrooms, and a washer and dryer. You can expect quality lodging.
  • You’ll be guaranteed a spot if you like to have your vacation at the same time and place every year.
  • You can diversify your travels by visiting different resort properties in the network throughout the U.S. and abroad, if the contract allows.

Cons of buying a timeshare

  • There are high upfront costs, and the annual maintenance fees will continue to increase. The interest rates for financing the initial outlay will be high.
  • Timeshares decrease in value. If you decide you no longer want it, you may experience a loss if you try to sell it. There’s often no return on your investment.
  • Your vacations will be limited to the properties within the resort’s network.
  • A timeshare may not include room service and housekeeping unless you are staying at one of the hotels in the network.
  • A timeshare is not for you if you like to travel several times a year and take a vacation for a few days at different places.
  • A timeshare will not allow for a spontaneous vacation.

How to get out from under a timeshare/travel vacation club

If you no longer want to use your timeshare or cannot afford it, options are available.

Ways to get rid of a timeshare:

  • Sell your timeshare through a reputable online source.
  • Give the timeshare away to another person. You would lose your initial investment but could get out from under the annual dues/maintenance fees. Make sure the transfer is in writing.
  • Ask a licensed real estate broker to list the timeshare.
  • Rent the timeshare (if the contract allows). Your timeshare resort may offer rentals and may allow you to include your property.  You can also list it on a vacation home site or with a reputable timeshare resale company that offers rentals.
  • Contact the resort owner or developer and ask if you can return the timeshare. Generally, the owners will take the timeshare back if you are current with your payments and the timeshare is paid in full. They will not pay you for the timeshare, but you will no longer have to pay the dues/maintenance fees. You may be charged a transfer fee.

If you financed your timeshare, that’s a contractual obligation. You are still responsible for making the remainder of your payments. These are determining factors that may affect your eligibility to exit your timeshare.

Some owners decide to walk away from the commitment of their timeshare by defaulting on their annual dues/maintenance fees. But breaking the contract will likely hurt their credit score and reduce their chances of getting future credit.

Timeshare resale scams to avoid

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns that numerous companies claim to be consultants or resellers of timeshares but are scam artists. This fraudulent practice grew as many timeshare owners became desperate to get out of their contracts.

Scammers search the web for owners who are trying to sell a timeshare (and sometimes even those who are not). They tell the owner they can sell their timeshare for a significant profit and ask for a sizable fee in advance. They then disappear with the money.

Other resale scam companies will contact owners and say a buyer is interested in their timeshare. They ask the owner to wire money to move the deal forward.

To add to the list of fraudulent companies, some present themselves as legal firms. They advertise that they can get owners out of their contracts quickly. The owners are told to stop paying the bank or the property owner and divert those funds to the scammers. The fraudulent “legal firm” makes the owner believe this must occur before they can file a lawsuit against the resort property.

These types of scams may seem obvious and easily avoidable, but many timeshare owners continue to become victims.

The FTC has a lawsuit against a company that used scare tactics and high-pressure sales to steal money and timeshares from older adults. They would invite timeshare owners to a free dinner and then guilt them into thinking they would be saddling their children and grandchildren with a huge financial burden with their timeshare.

This company received over 90 million dollars. These unsuspecting consumers believed the company was genuinely looking out for their interests by selling their timeshare. The company gladly took their money – but did nothing.

The FTC warns consumers not to pay any fees in advance to resellers and to check the company’s rating online.

If you are the victim of fraud, contact the Federal Trade Commission or your state’s Attorney General . You can also contact the Resort Owners’ Coalition with questions you may have on selling your timeshare.

The bottom Line

Timeshares/travel vacation clubs are a big commitment and limit your vacation options. They require a substantial initial investment and ever-increasing annual costs, and there is no return on your investment.

If you decide later down the road that the timeshare is too expensive to maintain, you’ll have difficulty selling it. You may only get back a small portion of your initial outlay. If you financed the timeshare, you would have paid a substantial amount in interest since the rates are typically high. Getting out from under your contract could result in a significant financial loss.

Conversely, according to the American Resort Development Association’s (ARDA) U.S. Shared Vacation Ownership 2022 Report, 90% of its owners were generally satisfied with their timeshare. ARDA (a trade association for the timeshare industry) stated, “The data in this report was collected via online methodology from March 13, 2022 to March 31, 2022. A total of 1,600 timeshare owners were identified and surveyed.”

If you believe a timeshare is in your future, weigh the benefits and risks and research available options. It may be suitable for your travel style. Check into buying a resale unit through a reputable source to save substantially on your initial expenses. Verify that the current owner has paid the dues and fees in full. You don’t want to be stuck paying any outstanding dues.

As always, we are here for you at Consumer Rescue . We’ll gladly throw you a lifeline if you find yourself in a quandary.  But remember, if you sign a legally binding contract, you might just be out of luck. So be careful! (Stephanie Patterson, Consumer Rescue)

20 Creative Staycation Ideas When You Need a Change of Scenery

Here's how to have a vacation wherever you call home.

take a trip club

Feeling cooped up, but not ready or able to take a full-on vacation? Enter the staycation, which offers a refreshing break from monotony without straying far from home — or, in some cases, leaving home at all.

With a little creativity, it's amazing how much you can break up your routine and free yourself from the rut of your usual surroundings. From playing tourist in your home city to camping in your backyard, read on for 20 of the best staycation ideas that you can do at any time — no plane ticket required.

Go camping.

An activity that lets you explore where you live, immerses you in the healing power of the great outdoors, offers a complete change of scenery, and requires learning new skills? We call that a staycation win. If staying at home during your time off is bound to drive you stir-crazy, camping is a sure cure for cabin fever. Even backyard (or living room) camping can be a fun change of pace if you don't have easy access to campgrounds in your area.

Stay at a local hotel, resort, or bed-and-breakfast.

If you're more in the mood to be pampered, skip camping and book a room at a local hotel, resort, or quirky bed-and-breakfast. It's the perfect way to see your town with fresh eyes and play tourist for the weekend. Not to mention, you can indulge in the delights of ordering room service and coming home to a freshly made-up room every day.

Do the touristy things.

You may live in a town that lots of people visit, yet you've never gone full tourist mode and explored the area's main attractions. A staycation is the perfect excuse to finally check off those landmarks and activities. If you live in a major city, consider purchasing a pass that bundles several attractions at a discount, such as CityPass or Go City . This way, you'll save on admission and have a long itinerary of experiences.

Enjoy a local museum, science center, or gallery.

What do out-of-towners do when they visit your city? Beyond the big tourist attractions, there are cultural and historical institutions you may have never thought to visit; a staycation is the perfect time to do so. Look for a cultural outing dedicated to local history, area artists, or scientific research for a refreshing change of pace from your usual routine. You may learn something new about the area, the world, or yourself.

Rent an Airbnb.

Is there a neighborhood in your city that you've always wanted to explore further, or an area you frequent but never spend the night in? Make weekend plans to visit this part of town and stay in an Airbnb. Or, arrange for a house swap if you have someone you trust. Booking an Airbnb is a good way to gain a new perspective on your hometown.

Relax at a local spa.

Dedicate a full day to indulgent self-care by checking yourself in at a local spa, whether it's located in a nearby resort or at a stand-alone location. Many spas charge a fee for a day pass unless you've booked a treatment, so spring for a pampering service or a full day of back-to-back appointments.

Book a last-minute hotel deal.

Set aside a weekend for spontaneous adventure. Before the weekend hits, take a peek at the HotelTonight app and book the first great deal you see. You may find hotels in your city (or the next town over) offering empty rooms at rock-bottom prices. During your stay, don't make any plans: Simply meander the neighborhood on foot and stop at whatever interests you, whether it's a park, bookstore, or restaurant.

Sign up for a food tour.

For a new, mind-opening experience without having to go far, take a food tour of your city or somewhere nearby. Join a professionally organized trip with a guide if available, or arrange your own tour with multiple stops for small plates or single courses at a variety of restaurants you've always wanted to try. Alternatively, theme your tour and sample various takes on the same dish, whether that's dessert, tacos, or appetizers.

Get comfortable.

Transform your everyday surroundings by prioritizing cozy: light your favorite scented candle , crack open a book, cook a hot meal that reminds you of your favorite destination, and break out every blanket you own. Read up on the idea of hygge, a Danish lifestyle concept that's all about indulging in whatever makes you most comfortable at any given moment.

Take a virtual tour.

Many cultural establishments have gone digital and now offer virtual tours to those stuck at home. You can explore museums, national parks, European castles, or world-famous attractions like Machu Picchu without getting off your couch. You can even experience destinations like Tel Aviv and New York City, or go on a stunning train ride, all from home. Check out platforms like Beeyonder, which let you peruse through a variety of virtual travel experiences, where you'll be able to speak and interact directly with your guide on the other side of the world. Many world-renowned museums also offer their own virtual experiences; Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum, for example, has an entire section on their website dedicated to "From Home" viewing .

Visit your closest amusement park.

You may live far away from your dream park in Orlando or Anaheim, but that doesn't mean your home state has nothing to offer. Do a little digging and you'll find that some of the best theme parks in the United States are located in the heartland like Dollywood in Tennessee and Silver Dollar City in Missouri. There's a good chance you also live within a reasonable driving distance of a Six Flags park.

Plan a scavenger hunt.

If you've already seen a lot of your hometown, a scavenger hunt is a great way to challenge your preconceptions and start thinking differently about your surroundings. Team up with your family and friends to come up with a list of scavenger hunt items, like asking them to find a specific type of car or street art, or encoding riddles into the list.

Try an escape room.

Escape rooms have surged in popularity in the last few years, as more and more people discover the joys of these life-size puzzles. You may have a few in your area worth trying out. Participants in an escape room are "locked in" and given clues and puzzles to solve in order to find the key that lets them out. Usually, experiences are monitored by a supervising employee who is there to give hints and assist if anyone needs to exit the game for any reason.

Visit your closest national, state, or local park.

If you're lucky enough to have a national or state park in your town or nearby, take advantage and go exploring. Most parks have a variety of outdoor activities on offer, from hiking and biking to climbing, kayaking, and wildlife-watching. A county or local park will also do if that's all you have within a day's driving distance. Pack a picnic and plan some fun activities for your time in the sunshine.

Plan a movie marathon based on your favorite destination.

With the right movie, you don't need a plane to be transported to a new country. Take the time to research your chosen destination's most popular films — or movies that are set there — and try to watch as many as you can. This could mean a night of motoring around Italy with classic films like "Roman Holiday" or embarking on the samurai's journey with the entire Kurosawa canon.

Learn a new language.

Your big international trip might still be on the horizon, but that doesn't mean you can't start practicing your foreign language skills. Free language-learning apps are readily available, but if you want to get really serious about your studies, you can find an online tutor on platforms like Preply and iTalki . Not only do these classes give you one-on-one instruction, but you also often get to interact with a native speaker from your destination country.

Try geocaching.

Geocaching is like a scavenger hunt that takes place all over the world with participants hiding caches, usually small containers with messages or other rewards, in all kinds of places. You can download the geocaching app to see where caches have been hidden and follow the GPS coordinates to the location. Once you find the cache, you can sign your name in the logbook and collect the prize if there is one, or leave swag of your own for the next geocacher.

Learn a new craft.

A staycation is a perfect excuse to finally take that ceramics, aerial silks, woodworking, glassblowing, jiu-jitsu, rollerskating, or whatever kind of class you've had your eye on. Take a look around your town to see if there are any businesses offering classes or workshops that interest you. Even if it's just one class, it's worth it to get out of your comfort zone.

Scrapbook your travel memories.

Even the best staycation ideas can't ward off the travel blues when you've been itching to go somewhere new. Instead of moping, use this time off to focus your creativity on creating a scrapbook to commemorate your favorite trips. You can use online photo book makers to create your own books that can be printed and sent straight to your door. To make the designing process even more fun, you can order on-theme takeout that coordinates with your past travels to further fuel your creativity.

If this is your favorite thing to do on vacation anyway, why not dedicate your whole staycation to it? Build yourself the perfect sleep itinerary by investing in a new pair of pajamas, lay down some freshly laundered sheets, and put on a sleep-inducing playlist to get set up for the best shut-eye you've had in a long time. Don't forget to put your phone on do-not-disturb mode and let the sheep-counting begin.

Replacing a great manager is never easy but Slot didn’t get that memo at Liverpool

You could say he has slotted in just fine.

Arne Slot clearly didn’t get the memo that it’s supposed to be a near-impossible job to follow a club great as manager.

Take David Moyes after replacing Alex Ferguson at Manchester United. Moyes lasted 10 months.

Or Unai Emery after replacing Arsene Wenger at Arsenal. Emery lasted an uncomfortable 18 months.

These are very early days but Slot has barely put a foot wrong since succeeding Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool manager following the popular German’s nearly nine years in the dugout. Klopp forged such a connection with the port city and its soccer-mad people that he was compared with Bill Shankly, the club’s most legendary manager.

Maybe it’s because, at the moment, Slot’s Liverpool doesn’t look too different to Klopp’s team.

Two Premier League matches. Two wins . Two clean sheets.

There was even a convincing win over Manchester United in a preseason game in the United States, which is never a bad thing when it comes to getting fans of the Reds onside.

There are bigger challenges to come, of course. Starting on Sunday when Liverpool plays United for real, this time in the league at Old Trafford in what is historically the biggest match in English soccer between the country’s two most successful teams.

While United opted to stick with its manager, Erik ten Hag, despite a woeful eighth-place finish last season, Liverpool’s hand was forced by Klopp’s decision to step down after a tenure that included a Premier League and a Champions League title.

Slot was regarded as a natural successor because of his style of play which, while not as intense and suffocating, is still very attacking and high-energy like Klopp’s.

Indeed, Richard Hughes, Liverpool’s new sporting director who identified Slot as Klopp’s replacement, said during the summer that the Dutchman’s coaching philosophy and approach “lend really well with the kind of squad we have, the supporters and the football club as a whole.”

Hence why, to the frustration of some Liverpool fans, the club has felt it necessary to sign only two players in the first transfer window of the new era — and one of them was a goalkeeper, Georgia international Giorgi Mamardashvili , who has been sent back on loan to the team from which he was bought. The other came on Thursday, when Italy winger Federico Chiesa joined from Juventus .

In short, Slot feels it’s tough to improve on what he has and will go about making only tweaks here and there to put his own stamp on the lineup in its bid to challenge Manchester City and Arsenal, the two top teams over the last two years, for the Premier League title.

Take this stat from Sunday’s 2-0 win at Brentford: Liverpool completed 92% of its passes, which — according to Premier League statistics supplier Opta — is the team’s highest on record (since 2003-04) in a Premier League game.

That fits with a comment made in preseason by Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones, who said the aim now is to “have all the ball and completely kill a team.”

Initially, it feels like there’s less chaos, and more control, in Slot’s team.

However, look at the goals scored against Brentford and they still bore the imprints of the Klopp era. There was the rapid counterattack, launched after clearing a Brentford corner, that was finished off by Luis Diaz, and a strike by Mohamed Salah after the ball was won back high up the field by heavy pressing.

For the moment, the results are coming because the same players are doing the same things they did under Klopp.

In that sense, Slot is playing it clever and not trying to change too much too quickly, something which Moyes and Emery perhaps got wrong when they headed up new eras at other English soccer superpowers.

Indeed, 11 years after Ferguson’s retirement, United is still trying to rediscover its identity, with Ten Hag the fifth permanent manager since (plus three interim coaches).

Not that everything is rosy for Slot.

There’s still the thorny issue of perhaps his best three players — Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold — all having contracts ending after this season. Alexander-Arnold stirred up social media with his reaction to being substituted early against Brentford, while the 32-year-old Salah told Sky Sports on Thursday: “I don’t want to think about next year or about the future. Let’s enjoy the last year and we’ll see.”

Slot also has yet to find a solution to his one clear concern about the team — at the base of its midfield. An attempt to buy Spain international Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad failed this month and he has been using Ryan Gravenberch, a midfielder who might be better going forward, as the most deep lying of the central-midfield three.

Otherwise, Slot has been charming in news conferences — much like Klopp was — and, tellingly, makes it his mantra to be praiseworthy of the team in general instead of focusing on any individual.

Most importantly, his team has been winning games.

And none are bigger than against Manchester United. Being at Liverpool only a few months won’t stop Slot knowing that.
