Puerto Vallarta Mexico Port Guide

Cruise to Puerto Vallarta, México and you’ll be surrounded by the calm waters of the Banderas Bay on one side, and the Sierra Madre Mountain range on the other. On your Panama Canal cruise , Puerto Vallarta may be just one stop of many, but it's not hard to be enamored with its ease and proximity to lush rainforests just beyond the city limits.

Puerto Vallarta blends the vibe of a bucolic Mexican fishing village with a luxurious resort town. Downtown is a hub for nightlife, shopping, and some of the area’s top-rated restaurants. You’ll immediately recognize the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, a landmark literally adorned with a crown, jutting out of the Puerto Vallarta skyline. Or head to Los Arcos for a photo op of you and preserved Romanesque arches overlooking the bay. Puerto Vallarta manages to capture everything you’d want in a destination—scenic beaches, plentiful chances for eco-excursions like horseback riding in the mountains, dolphin and whale watching, or swimming and sunbathing at Playa de Los Muertos.

Top sights & attractions for cruises to puerto vallarta, church of our lady of guadalupe.

A top on many tours in Puerto Vallarta, the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe is a symbol of the city—its tower is instantly recognized as the jewel of Puerto Vallarta’s skyline, and the church even features an elaborate sculptured “crown” at the top of the tower, glittering in the midday sunlight from wherever you are. Each year, there’s a 12-day festival honoring Guadalupe in December.

Banderas Bay

Stretching across 62 miles of blue water and marine life, Banderas Bay is one of the largest bays in all of México, Puerto Vallarta is nestled within. While you’re on a Puerto Vallarta cruise, explore Banderas Bay for sport-fishing and wildlife, including whale watching, or take a boat along the bay, stopping in the small villages to look out at the ocean views.

Dolphin Discovery Vallarta

Whether you’re in a group or by yourself, you can arrange an unforgettable opportunity to swim with dolphins in Puerto Vallarta. Tours are about 40-minutes long and they include plenty of time to play with dolphins and get an understanding for their habits, their quirks, and all the reasons why they’re one of the world’s most unique species. Perfect for kids and animal lovers. The Dolphin Discovery center is about six miles from the cruise port, so a taxi or car is the fastest way to get there.

Playa de Los Muertos

This beach tends to be crowded and bustling, ideal for an action-packed day of parasailing, water sports, swimming, and more. Playa de Los Muertos is one of the busiest beaches in this part of México, and you’ll find plenty of bars and restaurants near the beach. When you get tired of the sun, seek shelter for a cold drink.

These iconic arches welcome you to Plaza Morelos facing the ocean, and they’re one of Puerto Vallarta’s recognizable structures. Stop to take pictures at Los Arcos before continuing your jaunt down the boardwalk. It’s a free sight, and gives you a chance to look out into the Bay of Banderas as you continue on to cafes, restaurants, or shopping in the plaza.

Learn More About Puerto Vallarta Shore Excursions

Top things to do in puerto vallarta, walk around olas altas.

This neighborhood is also called the “romantic zone” near the pier in Puerto Vallarta. Sculpture installations, street art, and landmarks are easy to find along these walkable, cobblestone streets. Many of the best restaurants in Puerto Vallarta can be found in Olas Altas. Take a walk here for food, shopping, and friendly locals.

Book a Tequila Tasting

This area of México is famous for its tequila, and tasting tours are abundant. You’ll discover tequila and mezcal in new ways, including the history of tequila in the area and the distillation process required. You’ll also learn how to properly sip tequila. A must for foodies and lovers of tequila.

Go Horseback Riding

One shore excursion you can organize while on your Puerto Vallarta cruise is horseback riding. You can ride horses at sunset or under waterfalls. Many tours will take you up the hills into foothills of the Sierra Madre Mountains, surrounding you with tropical rainforest. There’s no better way to explore this verdant landscape than horseback.

Climb the Sierra Madre Mountains

Head on a walking tour of the lush Sierra Madre Mountains just outside of Puerto Vallarta, where you can check out the 1.2 mile trail solo or with a group via tour. This is best for a day-long excursion so you don’t miss anything. After your scenic walk, you can take a dip in the brackish Cuale River, where families often picnic on the weekends.

Top Food and Drink Spots Near the Puerto Vallarta Cruise Port

Café des Artistes

Address: Guadalupe Sanchez 740, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

This is considered one of Puerto Vallarta’s best restaurants—romantic and candlelit, with blown glass hovering and shimmering above the tables. Chef Thierry Blouet brings Latin influence to dishes that require classic French sensibility, like tartar of mahi-mahi with watermelon or the lamb shoulder with crusted pistachios. One way to experience an evening here is with the six course chef tasting menu. You can choose two or three dishes from their bistro menu. Reservations highly recommended.

Mariscos El Coleguita

Address: Calle Popa Loc. 17, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Mariscos El Coleguita is a casual yet intimate experience close to the marina in Puerto Vallarta. They bring tequila to your table where you can get two on-the-house shots. Local seafood like tilapia, white fish, shrimp, and more are staples on the menu. Dessert, like the tequila, is provided—they’ll send fried plantains with a condensed milk for dessert to your table.

Address: Los Muertos Beach, Pulpito 105-3, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

La Palapa is designed to give you gorgeous views of the seaside. It’s one of the upscale options offered in Puerto Vallarta, taking pride in good service and even better food. Their bread and butter are their fresh, seasonal seafood dishes—like the seared salmon or seafood risotto—but they offer plenty of vegetarian and vegan-friendly options, too.

Playa Detox

Address: Avenida Los Tules 300, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

You’re probably going to eat a ton of great food while onboard your cruise ship. You might find yourself needing to cleanse or detox from the indulgent desserts or one too many mojitos. Playa Detox brings you nutrient-rich smoothies, juices, soups, and veggies to keep you energetic while you’re stopped on your cruise to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Planeta Vegetariano

Address: Iturbide 270 Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Vegetarians will find Planeta Vegetariano their haven while in Puerto Vallarta. Because so many Mexican dishes include meat, and the coast brings about a lot of seafood influence, finding vegetarian dishes can be a challenge. The menu changes daily, but there’s almost always a salad bar. Soy carnitas, vegetable lasagna, and soy carnitas are top choices.

Culture & History of the Puerto Vallarta Cruise Port

What we know about Puerto Vallarta mostly dates back to the 19th century, but there’s evidence of local people interacting with and fighting with Spanish conquistadors as early as the 14th century. In the 19th century, this area was called El Carrizal, then named Las Penas, and the town outgrew its reputation as a fishing village quickly, becoming an integral trading and port city in record time.

In the 1960s and 70s, the Mexican government made necessary provisions and updates to the town’s infrastructure, building an international airport to service the growing tourism economy. 1964 brought Hollywood stars Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton to Puerto Vallarta as they filmed John Huston’s “The Night of the Iguana,” which propelled Puerto Vallarta into the public eye. In the 1970s, resorts and hotels popped up, introducing more luxury options for travelers in the area. The boom in tourism continued even as recession and poverty crept up in Puerto Vallarta, devaluing the peso in the process. Today, Puerto Vallarta cruises are still bringing a large amount of foot traffic into the city and is still known as a luxury destination and has grown as a destination for LGBTQ travelers, now home to a variety of friendly bars, nightclubs, and beaches.

Puerto Vallarta Port Facilities & Location

Your ship will dock three miles from downtown at the Marina Vallarta Maritime Terminal, where you can easily exchange your currency, schedule a tour at a kiosk, or use one of the ATMs to grab some extra pesos.

Transportation in Puerto Vallarta

The bus system in Puerto Vallarta is very efficient, running about every five minutes to destinations across the city. A bus ride will set you back 7.50 pesos, and their system doesn’t allow transfers. Taxis outside the cruise port gate tend to be more affordable than the drivers who roam inside the port. You can walk to get to downtown, or take a taxi for less than $10. Taxis are abundant in the city center. Water taxis are popular to get from the pier at Playa de Los Muertos to the beaches.

Shopping Near the Puerto Vallarta Cruise Port

The main shopping in Puerto Vallarta can be found in shops, boutiques, and souvenir shacks on Morelos Street. Since the late 1970s, Vallarta’s flea market scene has boomed. The Mercado Rio Cuale is a haggler’s paradise, where handmade goods, jewelry, and Costa Rican clothing are all on sale. Vallarta is also home to a burgeoning arts scene where you can find work from Mexican painters and sculptors for sale. Mexican eateries and affordable food stands are staples of the flea market too.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The official currency in Mexico is the peso (MXN), and one US dollar (USD) is the equivalent of around 19 pesos. Because of the influx of American tourists in Mexico, USD is accepted in a lot of popular tourist spots. However, credit cards aren’t as popularly used in Mexico as they are in the US, so you tend to be better off with carrying cash. When it comes to tipping, it’s definitely encouraged. 15-20% at bars and restaurants is the norm. It’s also polite to tip your tour guides and drivers a few extra dollars.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Cruise to Puerto Vallarta and find yourself immersed in dynamic culture and history. Unlike other coastal resort towns in Mexico, Puerto Vallarta ("PV" to locals), retains quite a bit of its colonial-era charm.  Its town square, Plaza de Armas, and the gorgeous church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, serve as the loveliest representations of bygone ages. While on your Puerto Vallarta cruise, take in these echoes of the past and more modern attractions, including an ambitious public art project along the seaside walkway (the malecón) and trendy restaurants such as La Leche, serving contemporary Mexican cuisine. Round these out with plenty of fun-in-the-sun outdoor activities on and along Banderas Bay (whale-watching! snorkeling! jet-skiing!), cruise excursions that reveal the best of Puerto Vallarta's flora and fauna, and a side trip to one of Mexico's pueblos mágicos (magical towns, a designation conferred by the government to recognize smaller towns that possess historical and cultural value), and you'd be hard-pressed to find a more pleasant place to spend part of your cruise to Puerto Vallarta.

Exploring the Marietas Islands

A visit to Puerto Vallarta wouldn’t be complete without a journey to the stunning Marietas Islands. Situated just off the coast, these uninhabited islands are a hidden gem, offering a sanctuary for marine wildlife and a paradise for nature lovers.

The Marietas Islands are a protected natural reserve, known for their unique ecosystem and breathtaking beauty. These volcanic islands are home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, both on land and underwater. Explore the secluded beaches, hike through lush jungles, and marvel at the incredible biodiversity that exists within this ecological sanctuary.

One of the highlights of a visit to the Marietas Islands is the famous Hidden Beach. This hidden gem is nestled within a collapsed volcanic crater, creating a secluded oasis accessible only by swimming or kayaking through a narrow tunnel. Once inside, you’ll be greeted by a pristine sandy beach, surrounded by towering cliffs and crystal-clear turquoise waters—a true paradise for snorkeling and swimming.

During your boat ride to the islands, keep your eyes peeled for dolphins that often frolic in the surrounding waters. You may also spot sea turtles, manta rays, and various species of seabirds, creating an immersive wildlife experience.

Embarking on a guided tour is the best way to explore the Marietas Islands. Knowledgeable guides will provide valuable insights into the islands’ history, ecology, and conservation efforts. They’ll also ensure the preservation of the delicate ecosystems by promoting responsible practices, such as the protection of coral reefs and the proper disposal of waste.

As you explore the islands, take the opportunity to snorkel in the crystal-clear waters. Immerse yourself in the underwater world, marveling at colorful fish, vibrant coral reefs, and other captivating marine species. Snorkeling equipment is usually provided as part of the tour, making it easy for you to enjoy this immersive experience.

When planning your visit to the Marietas Islands, keep in mind that access may be restricted due to conservation efforts and limited visitor capacity. It’s crucial to book your tour in advance to secure your spot and ensure a memorable journey to this ecological wonderland.

Exploring the Marietas Islands offers a unique opportunity to witness nature’s beauty in its purest form. From hidden beaches to vibrant marine life, this captivating destination is truly a treasure worth discovering during your time in Puerto Vallarta.

From vibrant markets to boutique shops, Puerto Vallarta offers a wide range of options for finding unique and meaningful mementos of your trip.

One of the most popular places to shop for souvenirs is the bustling Puerto Vallarta Flea Market, also known as the Mercado Municipal. Located in the heart of downtown, this vibrant market is a treasure trove of colorful handicrafts, traditional clothing, and authentic Mexican artwork. Browse through the stalls and barter for unique pieces such as embroidered textiles, hand-painted ceramics, beaded jewelry, and intricate wooden carvings.

Another unique shopping experience can be found at the Isla Rio Cuale, an island in the middle of the Cuale River. Here, you’ll find a charming market filled with stalls selling handmade crafts, textiles, jewelry, and traditional Mexican clothing. Take a leisurely stroll through the market, and perhaps even grab a drink or a snack from one of the vibrant cafes or restaurants along the riverbanks.

When shopping for souvenirs, keep in mind the cultural significance and authenticity of the items you choose. Look for products that are locally made and support fair trade practices. This ensures that your purchases directly benefit the artisans and contribute to the local economy.

Puerto Vallarta – Mexico

Puerto Vallarta is a famous port of call on repositioning cruises. It is a resort town located on Bahia de Banderas. This safe and friendly town is one of the best cities in Mexico. It is not an artificial tourist trap, but more a city that became an amazing beach destination by luck when it was discovered by Hollywood in the ’60’s. Vallarta has lovely resorts, a great old town and lots of great attractions to visit in the near area. Read the Vallarta cruise port guide underneath.

Cruise port guide Puerto Vallarta – Mexico

There are 4 cruise docks at Puerto Vallarta. All of them are located at the Northern part of town approximately 5,5 km or 3,5 mile from the old city center of Puerto Vallarta. Cruise dock 1 (see map above) is the main cruise dock where you will find the cruise terminal and lots of other facilities. There is a tourist information point, ATM, wi-fi hotspot, taxi stand and souvenir market right at the dock. When more ships are in town cruise dock 2, 3 and 4 might also be taken in use. Keep in mind there are less facilities at these docks, although it is a small walk over to cruise dock 1.

Shuttle services

Depending on the cruise line you are travelling with there might be shuttle service offered. Check with your cruise line if this will be offered during your cruise or not.

The white taxis waiting at the cruise port are authorised by the federal Government. Taxi rates are posted in port. The official taxi rates are: From Vallarta cruise port to Malecon (center of town): 16 dollar per car or 5 dollar per person From Vallarta cruise port to Cathedral: 20 dollar per car or dollar per person From Vallarta cruise port to Playa Los Muertos: 24 dollar per car From Vallarta cruise port to Mismaloya: 40 dollar per car The taxi rate per hour is 40 dollar for a van and 30 dollar for a car. But we always recommend you to negotiate before you step into the taxi. The yellow taxis you will find outside of the port area are also official taxis. They are generally cheaper than the white taxis in port. They also do not have a meter and you will have to negotiate a price before you step in.

Public Transportation

You can also catch the local bus from the Puerto Vallarta cruise port to the old town. The bus stop is marked in the map above. Any bus saying “centro” is able to take you to town. You simply pay 1 dollar to the bus driver and this will get you to the city centre. Going back you can take busses going to “Marina” or “Walmart”. Walmart you say? Yes, there is Walmart located opposite the Vallarta cruise port.

Port Puerto Vallarta cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico Riviera. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Puerto Vallarta is a major Mexican cruise port city located on Bahia de Banderas (Mexico's biggest natural bay), featuring over 100 mi (160 km) of mountains-encircled coastline. The city has population of around 260,000 (metro 390,000).

The settlement was established in 1851 under the name Las Penas. In 1918, the agricultural town was renamed "Puerto Vallarta" to honor a former governor (Ignacio L.Vallarta). Sierras mountains kept the town fairly isolated. In 1954 started a regularly scheduled air service. The road from Tepic was paved in 1970, opening the way for tourism.

City's tourism has steadily increased over the years and currently makes up to 1/2 of the local economic activity. International travel tourism's peak season runs from late-November through March. Puerto Vallarta beaches are among best-known tourist attractions. Long stretches of beaches are located to the north and a series of coves - to the south. The city itself is relatively big but has never lost its colonial charm and Mexican flavour - cobbled streets running up and down among the red-tile-roofed houses.

Puerto Vallarta cruise port receives ships on a regular basis and year-round. In 2015, the port was ranked one of Carnival Cruise Line 's "Top 5 ports in the world". In 2018, the cruise port handled 134 ship calls. For season 2019 were booked 180 visits. In 2020 summer, Puerto Vallarta inaugurates the new cruise terminal Puerto Magico (read more in the terminal section below).

Puerto Vallarta cruise terminal

Cruise ships to Puerto Vallarta dock at "Muelle de Cruceros Puerto Vallarta" cruise terminal. The facility has berthing capacity up to 3 liners simultaneously.

Bus tours to El Centro (old town, beach front and markets) are available. The beach front has undergone additional improvements to Malecon - long promenade along the beach, featuring numerous sculptures, night clubs, restaurants, markets, water activities (like boat pulled paragliding over the bay) and various other tourist activities.

(NEW) Puerto Vallarta Cruise Terminal "Puerto Magico"

In 2015 was announced a 3-phase (USD 36 million) project for building the new cruise terminal Puerto Magico. Building's exterior was designed as Mexican hacienda.

The terminal building is sized 15,500 m2 (167,000 ft2) out of total 24000 m2 (258330 ft2) indoor-outdoor area. The complex features dedicated 2-teared parking (capacity 400 cars) and Latin America's largest Aquarium. Project's Phase 1 was completed in 2018-Q3. In January 2020 were completed Los Alambiques (3 buildings, welcome centre, duty-free shop, offices, CBP-Customs and Border Control) and Hacienda Tequilera (shopping centre, regional merchandise, live entertainment) as part of Phase 2 (USD 16 million).

For new terminal's construction works was contracted the local company Puerto Magico. The facility is located on Pier 1, that currently handles ~80% of all cruise ship calls to Puerto Vallarta. The new terminal features a large welcome hall (sized over 30,000 ft2 / 2790 m2), several shops (selling local products), an aquarium.

Puerto Magico Terminal's official opening is scheduled for May 2020. The new facility supports 821 direct jobs (in addition to 3284 indirect regional jobs).

When I visit a cruise port, sometimes it’s more relaxing to just explore the city on your own. If that’s what you’re in the mood for, then the Puerto Vallarta cruise port is the perfect place for you!

Some cruise lines will offer an inexpensive shuttle from the cruise port to downtown Puerto Vallarta, or you can take a quick taxi ride — or even ride the bus.

Here’s what I did and saw on my  Puerto Vallarta walking tour :

1.  Malecón Puerto Vallarta

Taking a stroll along the Malecón is a great way to kick off your visit to Puerto Vallarta, and the best place to begin your walking tour.

The Malecón is a  paved oceanfront promenade  with plenty of cafés, shops, and galleries vying for your attention.  The Malecón spans 12 blocks (about a kilometer) and stretches from the  Centro to the Zona Romántica.

You’ll find many interesting sculptures decorating the Malecón.  It’s like an  outdoor art museum  with fantastic views of the ocean!  And if your cruise is leaving later in the evening, you can enjoy one of Puerto Vallarta’s famous sunsets from the Malecón.

The Malecón itself has some interesting designs in it – be sure to look down to see this artwork right beneath your nose.

2. ‘In Search of Reason’ sculpture

One of the most  interesting sculptures  along the Malecón is called ‘In Search of Reason’ (En Busca de la Razón).  It’s more commonly called the ‘Ladder Sculpture’, for obvious reasons.

This piece of art, created by sculptor Sergio Bustamante, stretches 30 feet upwards into the sky.

It features two robed figures climbing the ladder, each with an arm outstretched in either a wave or a beseeching gesture towards the sky.  A third robed figure stands facing the ladder with both arms outstretched.

It’s really hard to get a photo of this sculpture without other tourists in it, since people love to pose on the ladder for their souvenir photo from Puerto Vallarta.

And apparently the sculptor actually wanted this kind of interaction with his art – so it’s all good.

3. Sand Sculptures

You’ll find some extremely  intricate sand sculptures  located along the Malecón in Puerto Vallarta.  Since they’re made of sand, they don’t last forever.  But these ‘esculturas de arena’ must contain a little bit of magic to make them hold up as long as they do.

On my April visit, I ran across this interesting sand sculpture, styled with ancient influences.  It’s incredible how the artist makes it look like the figure is wrapped in leaves, adorned with jewelry and a mask.

If you are visiting Puerto Vallarta around the holidays, you may see sand sculptures with a religious aspect such as ‘The Virgin of Guadalupe’ or ‘Three Kings’.   If you get lucky, you might even get to see a sand sculpture artist at work!

4. Triton and Siren

This classically styled bronze sculpture reminds me of a museum piece from Greek or Roman mythology.

And for good reason – the male figure represents Triton, one of the Greek gods of the sea.  The female figure is a Siren.  You remember them – beautiful women known for their enchanting and irresistible songs which drove sailors to their doom.

‘ Triton and Siren ’ is the creation of Mexican artist Carlos Eugenio Espino del Castillo Barrón and dates from 1990.

Local officials incorrectly labeled this statue ‘Neptune and the Nereid’ during its unveiling, so you may see various statue names when you look for this one on Google Maps.

The ocean makes such an appropriate backdrop to this sculpture, and the view would be even more dramatic at sunset.

5. Letras Puerto Vallarta (Puerto Vallarta sign)

Letras Puerto Vallarta is the ever-popular  ‘Puerto Vallarta’ sign  spelled out in giant letters.  It’s a newcomer to the Malecón, as it was just added in 2018.

The giant letters are decorated with colorful and whimsical pictures representing Puerto Vallarta.  These include attractions such as the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, and activities such as fishing and sailing.  Be sure to take a peek at the back side of the sign, as it’s even more colorful than the front.

The Puerto Vallarta sign makes for an  iconic photo opportunity , so you’ll have to be patient to wait for the area to clear out between tour groups in order to get your own photo.  Or be really good with Photoshop.

The Letras Puerto Vallarta centers on a statue, ‘ The Boy on the Seahorse ’ (Monumento El Caballito).  This sculpture is the work of artist Rafael Zamarripa Castañeda.

This statue was the first to be placed on Puerto Vallarta’s Malecón, and it is considered to be one of the symbols of the city.

The version you see here is a replica of the original, which is located on Los Muertos Beach.  The original had some unfortunate history with being lost to the sea during storms, and subsequently recovered.

So now the city has a matching pair of statues to enjoy!

6. The Arches (Los Arcos)

As you continue your walking tour south along the Malecón, you will come to one of Puerto Vallarta’s most iconic attractions.  The Arches, or Los Arcos, are a set of four connected stone arches overlooking the waters of beautiful Banderas Bay.

The Arches are the heart of Puerto Vallarta’s Malecón , and serve as a backdrop for the Aquiles Serdan Theater. You’ll usually be able to find some sort of live entertainment in this open-air amphitheater.

Enjoy musical performances,  traditional Mexican dancers , or local festivals.  Some of the entertainment caters to tourists (such as demonstrations of ancient dances complete with costumes), but other entertainment is for the enjoyment of locals and tourists alike.

The arches themselves were originally part of a hacienda near Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico but are now an integral part of the Puerto Vallarta landscape.  They have become nearly as recognizable as the Seahorse statue and the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

7. The Friendship Fountain

Keep following the Malecón past the arches, and you can’t miss the Friendship Fountain.   This fountain features three intertwined playful dolphins, so it is sometimes called the  Dancing Dolphins Fountain.

The Friendship Fountain’s existence is due to Puerto Vallarta becoming a sister city with Santa Barbara, California in 1973.

The whimsical fountain you see here took inspiration from the design of the Santa Barbara Bicentennial Friendship Fountain.  The California version features the graceful forms of a family of three dolphins all leaping in the same direction.

Puerto Vallarta’s Friendship Fountain was created in 1987 by artists James “Bud” Bottoms and Octavio González Gutiérrez.

As the story goes, the elements of the fountain arrived separately, and González had to choose how to arrange them.  So, he placed the dolpins in this arrangement, which gives Puerto Vallarta’s fountain a lively and playful vibe.

8. Naval History Museum

If you’re in the mood to visit a museum during your  walking tour of Puerto Vallarta , the Naval History Museum is a good choice.  Its location couldn’t be more convenient since it is right next to the arches and the Friendship Fountain.

The Naval History Museum is housed in a colonial-style building.  Inside you’ll find lots of exhibits detailing  Mexico’s naval history ,  elaborate model ships  (Chris loves those), navigational instruments, and maps.  The majority of the exhibits are in both English and Spanish.

It’s a small museum, so you can easily fit a stop into your schedule.  Admission is fairly inexpensive –only a couple of dollars.  There’s also a coffee shop, and you don’t need to buy a museum ticket to visit the coffee shop.

It’s easy to walk right past the Naval History Museum if, like me, you get drawn in by every sculpture you see along the esplanade.  If you get to this colorful oceanfront tile art work ‘Vendedores de Pescado’, turn around!

9. Vallarta Dancers

The  vibrantly colored statue , Vallarta Dancers (Escultura charro Bailarines de Vallarta) will be our last stop of this side of the Malecón before we head inland on our walking tour.

I love the graceful movement captured in the female dancer’s swirling skirts and billowing scarf.  The gold scrollwork decorating the male dancer’s clothing and hat is also lovely.

This life-sized bronze statue looks like a moment frozen in time, and you almost expect to blink and have the dancers continue on with the steps of the dance.

The sculpture was created in 2006 by artist Jim Demetro and has become one of the most photographed sculptures in Puerto Vallarta.  It is based on the ‘Jarabe Tapatío’, aka the Mexican Hat Dance.

10. Plaza de Armas

Now we backtrack a wee bit to return to The Arches, and then head inland towards the southeast to reach the Plaza de Armas.

Note the roads in Puerto Vallarta are roughly in a grid system, but the roads are built parallel and perpendicular to the shoreline.  So, here in the Centro area, things run at about a 45-degree angle from the cardinal compass points.

And when we head south to the Zona Romántica, the roads realign with the direction of that shoreline and shift around again.

Plaza de Armas is  Puerto Vallarta’s central plaza , and it is right next to Puerto Vallarta’s City Hall and the Tourism Office.   You’ll see the statue of Ignacio L. Vallarta with pride of place as you approach the plaza.

You guessed it, Puerto Vallarta was named in honor of  Ignacio Vallarta , who was one of the state governors.  Before that, it was called Las Peñas.  I think the name ‘Puerto Vallarta’ has a nicer ring to it, don’t you?

Plaza de Armas is a lovely plaza where you can take a moment to rest on the  elegant scrollwork benches  or in the shady gazebo.  And from here, you can get an excellent view of the crown atop the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, which we’ll be visiting next!

11. Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe

The Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, or  Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe , is the second main  symbol of Puerto Vallarta  (along with the Seahorse).  ‘Our Lady of Guadalupe’ is another name for the Virgin Mary, the patron saint of Mexico.

If you’re visiting in the first part of December, be sure to check out the  Festival of Our Lady of Guadalupe , which runs from December 1-12.

The main belltower,  topped with an elaborate crown , makes this church unique.  The church was built between 1930 and 1940 in a neoclassical style.  The crown has had many incarnations over the decades, with impact from weather and earthquakes, with the current version created in 2009.

As you approach the church from the plaza, you’ll see the tall tower with its glorious crown as well as the two smaller towers. It’s one of the top Puerto Vallarta historic sites!

Feel free to enter the church to view the interior.  Be respectful and quiet inside the church, and don’t disturb worshipers during mass.

Be sure to look upwards into the interior of the dome to see the ornate golden decorations, cherubs, and stained glass.

12. Mercado Municipal Rio Cuale

If you’d like to purchase some authentic Mexican crafts during your visit to Puerto Vallarta, you’ll want to browse through the  Mercado Municipal Rio Cuale .  This market is located on the northern bank of the Rio Cuale.

Here you’ll find vendors with a dizzying array of products.  Take home some vibrant  beaded Huichol art , textiles, mosaics, or colorful ceramics.  Be sure to look around the market to see your options and be prepared to bargain!

If you’re hungry, there are lots of food options in the mercado, from fresh produce to prepared foods.  Head upstairs and check out the restaurants to sample typical Mexican cuisine.

If you want to do even more shopping, visit the  Cuale Island Flea Market  – just cross the bridge over Rio Cuale to the island, and you can’t miss it.

13. Gringo Gulch

As you head east from the Mercado, you’ll hit Gringo Gulch.   Gringo Gulch  is a residential area on the hillside along Rio Cuale.  It got its name from the famous foreigners (gringos) who lived in this area in the 1950s and 1960s.

Some of the most famous residents to live in Gringo Gulch were  Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton .  Their love affair in Puerto Vallarta is actually one of the things that really made a name for this city.

During Burton’s filming of ‘Night of the Iguana’ in Puerto Vallarta, Elizabeth Taylor moved here to be with him – even though he was married to someone else at the time!

They stayed in director John Huston’s ‘Casa Kimberley’, which Burton later purchased for Taylor.  He purchased a second house across the street for himself and had a bridge built between them (Lover’s Arch).

Since it’s on a hillside, be prepared for some steep inclines and stair-climbing in this part of the walking tour.

14. Zona Romántica

Puerto Vallarta’s Zona Romántica is a large region, roughly bordered by Rio Cuale to the north, highway 200 to the east, and the coast on the west.  It tapers to a point just past Playa Los Muertos.

Zona Romántica is a trendy area known for its restaurants, bars, galleries, boutiques, hotels and entertainment .  There is a robust LGTBQ community in Puerto Vallarta, and you’ll find rainbow-colored everything in the Zona Romántica.  And a surprising number of advertisements for drag shows!

Spend some time just exploring the Zona Romántica.   Admire the architecture of the colonial buildings and churches, enjoy a cup of coffee at a cute café, and do a little people-watching.

I love this sidewalk art that I ran across on my last visit to Puerto Vallarta – yet another of the city’s iconic seahorses!  In my opinion, it was much too pretty to walk on.

15. Iglesia de la Santa Cruz

The Iglesia de la Santa Cruz is a charming Catholic church painted in candy-colored pastels.   You can’t miss the belltower reaching up into the sky like a fancy wedding cake trimmed in yellow, pink, and white flanking pink stone arches.

This church is just a small unassuming local church but has its own beauty.  The interior is bright and airy, as the crisp white walls and ceiling are illuminated with sunlight from the high stained-glass windows.

16. Parque Lázaro Cárdenas

I’d be lying if I said that the Parque Lázaro Cárdenas wasn’t the highlight of my walking tour of the Puerto Vallarta cruise port.  I love this fantastic  mosaic-filled park !

When we visited Puerto Vallarta in April of 2019, there were a lot of really cool intricate mosaics decorating the columns and benches in Parque Lázaro Cárdenas.

When I returned in April of 2022, I was astounded at how many more mosaic benches had been completed.  In fact, almost all of the benches had been ‘adopted’ by local families or business to decorate.

I even saw some of the artists at work on their mosaic masterpieces.  I’m sure by the next time I visit Puerto Vallarta, the entire park will be completed.

Vibrant mosaic benches

Some of the mosaics are free form with a palette of colors but with no real pattern.

Personally, I prefer the ones with intricate designs and scenes.  This one has a ‘Día de Muertos’ ( Day of the Dead ) flair, with skeletal bride and groom flanking the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

I also love how the designs carry down through the bottom of the bench to make ‘legs’ for the figures.

I ran (okay, walked) from one bench to another like a kid in a candy store, ooh-ing and aah-ing over the gorgeous designs and vibrant colors.  And, of course, taking lots of pictures!

It’s certainly a tough decision, but I’d have to say that my absolute favorite bench design is this cutie, for both the design and the sentiment: ‘True love is you, love’.

17. Olas Altas Saturday Market

The  Olas Altas Farmers Market  sets up shop in Parque Lázaro Cárdenas on Saturdays.  This is a two-fer in that you can enjoy the gorgeous mosaics of the park, and also shop for some souvenirs or enjoy some local products.

You’ll find everything from jewelry to woven baskets to ceramics, and aguas frescas to sandwiches to artisan chocolates.

If you want to visit a farmer’s market but you’re not in town on a Saturday, visit the Emiliano Zapata Farmers Market.  It’s located further to the east in the Zona Romántica.  It may be a little bit out of your way, but it’s still only a 10-minute walk from the park.

18. ‘The Sail’ at Muelle de Playa Los Muertos

I told you we’d make it back to the waterfront, and here we are. ‘The Sail’ graces the muelle, or dock, of Playa Los Muertos.  This lovely piece of  art and architecture  was designed by architect José de Jesús Torres Vega.

The metal curves gracefully around a tall central pole and looks much like a sail billowing in the breeze of  Banderas Bay.

Take a walk out on the dock and you can circle ‘The Sail’.   From this vantage point, you’ll enjoy some  excellent views of Puerto Vallarta’s fantastic beaches .  Playa Olas Altas sits to the north, with Playa Los Muertos to the south.

19. Take a walk on the beach

No trip to Puerto Vallarta can be complete without a  walk on the beach !  So, take off those shoes, walk down to the shore, and wiggle your toes in the sand.  I’m pretty sure it’s some sort of therapy.  At least, I always feel my stress ebbing away when I walk along the shore.

You’ll find many excellent beaches just minutes away from the Puerto Vallarta cruise port.   Playa Los Muertos is one of the most famous and popular beaches in Puerto Vallarta  and is part of the Zona Romántica.

There many beachfront hotels, restaurants, and resorts lining up along Playa Los Muertos as well as Playa Olas Altas to the north.  We walked all the way down Playa Los Muertos until it ends in a rocky outcropping.

If you want to relax on the beach, there are various places to rent a beach chair.  Or if you’d like to be more active, there are many  aquatic activities to enjoy such as boating, fishing, or parasailing.

20. Puerto Magica

After a fun day of exploring Puerto Vallarta, be sure to give yourself enough time to get back to your cruise ship!

You don’t want to be that person who is running to try to catch a departing ship.  (Because generally, the ship isn’t going to wait on you – the company has to pay a lot for the time they spend occupying the dock.)

The Puerto Vallarta cruise terminal gives you one final present as you head back to your ship:  the  Puerto Magico sign , complete with one last seahorse!

Los Angeles

2 day cruise to puerto vallarta

Los Angeles is the second-most populous city in the United States, after New York City, and the most populous city in the Western United States. With an estimated population of four million, Los Angeles is the largest and most populous city in the state of California and the cultural, financial, and commercial center of Southern California. Nicknamed the "City of Angels" partly because of its name's Spanish meaning, Los Angeles is known for its Mediterranean climate, ethnic diversity, and sprawling metropolis. The city is also one of the most substantial economic engines within the nation, with a diverse economy in a broad range of professional and cultural fields. Los Angeles is also famous as the home of Hollywood, a major center of the world entertainment industry. A global city, it has been ranked 6th in the Global Cities Index and 9th in the Global Economic Power Index. The Los Angeles combined statistical area also has a gross metropolitan product of $831 billion, making it the third-largest in the world, after the Greater Tokyo and New York metropolitan areas. Los Angeles hosted the 1932 and 1984 Summer Olympics and will host the event for a third time in 2028.

Cabo San Lucas

2 day cruise to puerto vallarta

Cabo San Lucas, where the sea, sun and desert join to cast an air of mystery and romance over all who visit. Cabo was once a tranquil fishing village and, in times long ago, a hangout for pirates. Although no longer the fishing village of old, and not many of the old pirates are seen around town any more, the magic of Cabo remains. Cabo is still small and charming by any standards, with a population of under 30,000. We do have 4 stop lights now. And with the number of activities available to the visitor, you could easily imagine you are in a giant amusement park. Cabo has come of age. Located at the southernmost tip of the magnificent Baja peninsula, Cabo has been blessed with what many describe as the perfect climate. Average year-round temperature is 78 degrees, it is a little cooler in the winter and a bit warmer in the summer. For years Cabo was the remote playground reserved solely for private yacht owners. They flocked here to be near "Marlin Alley", as the waters around Cabo have often been described. The name is well deserved, as Cabo San Lucas is the undisputed billfish capital of the world. But Cabo is far from remote these days, and the attraction of this magical spot is no longer limited to marlin fishing. Cabo can be, many different things to people. Cabo San Lucas has become known as a perfect vacation spot for the entire family. Cabo can be as quiet, romantic and relaxing as any secret hideaway. It can also be as lively as anyone can possibly imagine. If your wish is to enjoy a quiet candlelight dinner, "muy romantico", beside the shimmering sea for just the two of you, we have some of the most romantic dining spots on the face of the earth. If golf, water sports, boating, fishing, ATV's, horseback riding and numerous other activities are what you seek, they're all here, waiting for you. If "party till you drop" is the mood of the evening, Cabo has got it for you, big time!

2 day cruise to puerto vallarta

Mazatlán spreads for 15 sun-splashed miles along a thumb of land that extends southward into the Pacific just below the Tropic of Cancer. Mazatlán thus marks the beginning of the Mexican tropics: a land full of palm trees, perpetual summer and a refuge from winter cold for growing numbers of international vacationers. Mazatlán’s beauty is renowned. Its coast sprinkled with beckoning islands and miles of golden bleaches and blue lagoons, it aptly deserves its title as “Pearl of the Pacific”. Mazatlan meaning "land of the deer" in the ancient Nahuatl language offers 10 miles of inviting sandy beaches. It's no wonder Mazatlan plays host to more than one million visitors per year. The vacationers come and frolic on the beach beside their “Golden Zone” hotels, while in the old town at the tip of the peninsula, life goes on in the old-Mexico style: in the markets, the churches, and the shady plazas scattered throughout the traditional neighborhoods.

Puerto Vallarta

2 day cruise to puerto vallarta

Puerto Vallarta is a resort town on Mexico’s Pacific coast, in Jalisco state. It is known for its beaches, water sports and nightlife scene. Its cobblestone center is home to the ornate Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe church, boutique shops and a range of restaurants and bars. El Malecón is a beachside promenade with contemporary sculptures, as well as bars, lounges and nightclubs.

20 Epic Things To Do Near The Puerto Vallarta Cruise Port

Puerto Vallarta arches

Located on the Pacific Coast, Puerto Vallarta provides the perfect getaway with turquoise waters, a warm climate, and fabulous sandy beaches. If you arrive at Puerto Vallarta cruise port on a Mexican Riviera cruise, there are lots of opportunities for your port day,

With the Pacific Ocean on one side and the Sierra Madre Mountains on the other, cruise guests can tour the old town or take a shore excursion from the cruise terminal.

Cruise lines usually sail from San Francisco or Los Angeles cruise terminal, but you may also stop during a Panama Canal cruise. Cruise ships dock in the city allowing guests to begin their adventures immediately.

So, here are some unique Puerto Vallarta activities or shore excursions to enjoy on your port day.

Whether you fly to Mexico to escape the winter weather, attend a wedding, or want to vegetate, consider staying in the romantic zone, a trendy area near the old town. Puerto Vallarta has some great hotels , and staying here puts you closer to the action.

1. Learn To Make Chocolate

If you’re a chocoholic (like me), stop by ChocoMuseo in downtown Puerto Vallarta. This little chocolate shop & museum is just off the Malecon. Taking a Bean to Bar workshop, allows you learn everything about cacao and chocolate making.

Alternatively, other classes such as the truffle, Mole Poblano, and a whole experience chocolate workshops may satisfy your needs.

A clay sculpture on the beach in Puerto Vallarta

This little shop also offers a free museum where you can see and feel a cacao pod. But the best part, of course, is the sampling of their chocolate products.

Their chocolate Mole sauce is heavenly, so pick up a few jars as gifts. While I couldn’t sample most things since I’m lactose intolerant, what I could try, tasted fantastic.

While the Mexican peso is the official currency, this business and many others accept the US dollar.

2. Walk The Malecon

In the downtown area, El Malecon is a lovely boardwalk offering ocean views on one side and patio restaurants on the other. It’s a popular spot to see a large selection of sculptures in the El Centro area.

However, the most famous statue on the Malecon boardwalk is four stone arches called Los Arcos. My favorite sculpture, The Rotunda of the Sea, depicts weird creatures blended into whimsical chairs.

As you admire the views of Banderas Bay, you might also witness some local artists and entertainers. Entertainers include human statues, rock balancers, sandcastle builders, and native dancers.

The Rotunda of the Sea statue

Remember, it’s hot in Mexico, so carry  sunscreen  and apply it often. We also like to travel with our  collapsible water bottles,  which we fill with safe drinking water from our cruise ship.

3. See The Dance Of The Fliers

Voladores fliers

Watching a performance of the volador “fliers” is incredible. The Dance of the Flier – La Danza del Volador is a ceremony performed by four men hanging upside-down by ropes on a pole.

They spin and uncoil the lines to the sounds of a flute and drum played by a fifth person on the ground. Descending the 150-foot pole is slow and graceful. With the Pacific Coast of Mexico as a backdrop, the ceremony is breathtaking.

Each day, the locals perform this ceremony to pray for rain to nourish the grounds. It was a tremendous treat to watch this age-old tradition. Today, the traditional ceremony is performed for tips from tourists.

4. Walk To Mirador Cerro de la Cruz Lookout

If you’re looking for fantastic aerial views of Puerto Vallarta, consider the walk to the top of the Mirador Cerro de La Cruz. At the peak, an observation tower provides 360° panoramic views of the Sierra Madre mountains and the Bay of Banderas.

If you’re not traveling by cruise ship, a sunrise or sunset stroll is doubly impressive. Depending on your fitness level and route, it takes 15-40 minutes to reach the top of Mirador Cerro de la Cruz.

The walk consists of a steep hill with lots of stairs. Like the El Faro Lighthouse hike in Mazatlán, it’s best to plan to walk in the early morning, when the temperatures are a bit more bearable.

5. Take A Puerto Vallarta Segway Tour

In downtown Puerto Vallarta, see the sites on a Segway tour .  I decided to try a Segway excursion since it was on my bucket list. Debbie, a transplant from Alberta, Canada, operates Wheeling Vallarta Segway Tours.

Karen on a Segway in Puerto Vallarta

Once fitted with a helmet, it was surprisingly easy to ride a Segway. Our guide, Jose, had a wealth of knowledge about the area.

On our 2-hour tour, we traveled along through the old town, crossed Cuale River Island, passed the Olas Altas farmer’s market, and turned around at the Los Muertos Pier. We visited a chocolate factory on the return trip and stopped to taste some tequila.

The ship docks near the Marina Vallarta if you’re   cruising the Mexican Riviera . You’ll need a taxi to get to old Vallarta. A segway tour is the perfect Puerta Vallarta excursion because you can see a lot of the city quickly. Plus, it’s cooler to ride than to walk in the scorching sunshine.

6. Day Trip To Las Caletas

Las Caletas Beach makes a great day trip from Puerto Vallarta to escape the action in the city center. Las Caletas is one on the city’s hidden gems with snorkeling, kayaking, and scuba diving.

You’ll enjoy a stunning tropical scenery and can opt for a spa treatment. Boat tours to Las Caletas include an open bar and an authentic buffet lunch featuring local cuisine.

7. Visit Our Lady Of Guadalupe

The church of Our Lady Guadalupe is called “one of the most endearing” structures in the city. If you plan to visit Puerto Vallarta, you must see this iconic church that dominates the city’s skyline. As you approach the church, you’ll notice its tower, topped by a wrought-iron crown held by angels.

Although the foundations of the church began in 1903, the “Crowning glory” on the top of the tower happened decades later, in 1965. The original crown was designed and sculpted by José Esteban Ramirez Guareño. But over time, that crown suffered damage due to weather and erosion.

Lady of Guadalupe Cathedral, Puerto Vallarta

So, in 1981 a replacement was erected. Later, in 1995, the second crown fell off due to an earthquake and was unrepairable. The current crown viewed today is the work of the famous artist Carlos Terres.

While some might admire this beautiful church from the Malecon, do take time to admire its architecture. If you can manage a trip, mid-afternoon is best when not many people are there. Be sure to go inside “ la Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe”  as known by the residents.

If you travel to Puerto Vallarta in December , you can witness the Virgin of Guadalupe Festival, a celebratory event which takes place at this cathedral.

8. Visit A Tequila Factory

If you are new to tequila, take a day trip to Chico’s Paradise   in the Sierra Madre foothills. While the tour has many stops, it also visits a tequila factory where you’ll learn more about this fantastic liquor.

Tequila tasting

Visitors learn about the process of growing, pulping, and cooking the agave to extract the juice. You’ll have the opportunity to taste the tequila from the distilling vat.

Of course, no tour of a tequila factory is complete without sampling. We learned how to drink tequila without feeling the burn, and after seven samples, most left with quite a buzz.

9. Shop At Isla del Rio Cuale

If you’re looking for a bargain souvenir, head straight to the market at River Cuale. Getting to  Isla del Rio Cuale  requires walking across the shaky footbridge over a river! The tropical jungle atmosphere is low-key and provides excellent shelter from the sun.

Tourists can find authentic Mexican handmade goods at reasonable prices at the market. Bargain with the locals if the price is more than you want to pay. After all, it is Mexico, and the locals expect it.

10. Have A Fish Pedicure

Having a fish pedicure is a novelty and relaxing experience. Also, it might be one of the craziest things to do in Puerto Vallarta. While the idea of fish eating the dead skin off your feet might gross some people out, I wanted to give it a try.

I found a vendor right near the Malecon next to a Senor Frogs. The cost was under USD 20, and the pedicure treatment lasted about 20 minutes. Here is Brian enjoying his first fish pedicure. From his smile, you’d never know he fears fish.

Brian having a fish pedicure

Before entering the tank, the attendant washes your feet. During the “fish pedicure,” the Garra rufa fish nibble at your feet. It does not hurt in any way; it actually tickles.

It’s important to note the health concerns of having a fish pedicure because the same water is used for each procedure.

In the United States and Canada, most places have now banned the use of this treatment. However, if you’re not squeamish or too concerned, give a fish pedicure a try. It’s been more than 10 years since my pedicure, and I did not catch any infections, and I still have all my toes, lol.

11. Zip Lining

Zip lining is a barrel of laughs, whether you’re young at heart, a first-timer, or a seasoned thrill-seeker. You’ll enjoy zip lining in the Sierra Madre while savoring the views of Banderas Bay. This exciting activity is one of the fun things to do in Puerto Vallarta.

If you’re an adrenaline junkie (like myself), I highly recommend Extreme Zip Line Adventure for a fun-packed canopy experience. This adventure park features nine zip lines that carry you through the tropical canopy with spectacular views of Puerto Vallarta.

Thrill-seekers will love the “Superman,” one of Mexico’s longest zip lines. At Extreme Zip Line Adventure, safety is of utmost importance. The instructors are knowledgeable, put you at ease, and show you how to use the double-safety wire zip lines.

I’m a dare-devil at heart, so I hung upside down the first time I zip-lined. I have to say, it was a disorientating experience, lol.

12. Take A Day Trip To Islas Marietas National Park

Humpback whales at Marietas Islands

Marietas Islands (Islas Marietas) are a group of picturesque islands formed by volcanoes. Large species of seabirds, including Blue Footed Boobies, inhabit the islands, and travelers can see dolphins, tropical fish, and manta rays in the waters.

As a UNESCO reserve, visitors cannot step foot on the land, but they can observe from a boat. When the tide is low, a hidden beach called Playa del Amor appears in a crater.

Vallarta Adventures offers tours to this pristine area at a reasonable price. They will collect and return you to the Puerto Vallarta cruise terminal.

13. Go Whale Watching

Puerto Vallarta offers whale-watching tours in the winter months. Between December to March, whales gather along Baja Mexico to give birth. While thousands of humpback whales flock to Banderas Bay each winter, you could see grey whales too.

It doesn’t require a day trip. Most tours last two to three hours and are roughly half the price of similar whale-watching tours in Alaska. Morning tours are best when the waters are the calmest.

A breaching humpback whale

On a previous trip, we enjoyed a tour to see whales in Cabo , and it didn’t disappoint. We witnessed continual breaching and whales slapping the water with their fins for over an hour.

Some tour operators have a hydrophone, allowing guests to listen to the whale communicating underwater.

14. Visit Mismaloya

Mismaloya Beach put Puerto Vallarta on the map many years ago, not for its beautiful beach but for the movie stars who visited there. Richard Burton was filming John Huston’s “Night of the Living Iguana” accompanied by his love interest, Elizabeth Taylor.

Their love blossomed in Puerto Vallarta, and Burton purchased a home for Taylor called Casa Kimberley. Today, tourists can stay at Casa Kimberley , now a luxury hotel. Guests can choose from the simple Flora Suite to the luxury Elizabeth Taylor Suite, a 2,500 sq. foot peaceful sanctuary.

Across the street, Burton owned his own home, and he connected the two by building an arched bridge. If you visit Mismaloya, you can see both the lover’s bridge and Elizabeth’s Taylor former residence.

Across the water from Mismaloya Beach, Los Arcos de Mismaloya’s granite rock formations stand prominent in the ocean. Nearby, consider a visit to the Vallarta Zoo, where you have the opportunity to see local and exotic animals.

15. Tour San Sebastian

Nestled in the Sierra Madre, the 1605 town of San Sebastian oozes old-world charm. Discover its history as a silver mining town, marvel at its colonial architecture, and wander its cobblestone streets. A guided tour includes visiting a tequila factory, watching a silversmith demonstration, and stopping at local museums.

Wear sunscreen and comfortable walking shoes as the tour lasts eight hours. Before visiting an organic coffee farm, you’ll enjoy a traditional meal in a Mexican hacienda.

16. Take A Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Tour

If you’re limited on time, consider taking a hop-on hop-off bus tour from downtown Puerto Vallarta. Depending on your preference, the tour can last for as little as a few hours or all day.

Puerto Vallarta hop-on hop-off bus

As the name suggests, you jump off at a point of interest. Popular stops include Mismaloya, Playa de los Muertos, Puerto Magico, Playa Las Gemelas, and Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

The buses operate from 10 am until 9 pm, and the route has about 20 stops. A bus ticket lasts the whole day, regardless of how many stops you get off.

17. Visit San Pancho

Located an hour south of Puerto Vallarta along the coast, San Pancho is a quaint town in Riviera Nayarit. The town oozes a Bohemian vibe and has a laid-back feel. It’s far less touristy, and if you stay here, you’ll understand the sense of community.

In San Pancho, a marine turtle nursery aims to protect Olive Ridley and Leatherback turtles as their numbers have declined. You could watch a magnificent turtle release if you visit from July to December.

San Pancho Beach has some serious waves and isn’t suitable for swimming. However, if you’re into surfing, head over to the beach to ride some big waves.

18. Hang Out In Zona Romantica

Zona Romantica, also known as the romantic zone , is a popular city area that offers a little of everything. The diverse neighborhood is eclectic and vibrant, from the LGBT bars and drag queen shows to the intimate patio bars.

It’s the most walkable area in the city. Visitors can choose from the best patio restaurants in Puerto Vallarta to one-dollar tacos. The dining options are endless. Nearby, the beaches are great for swimming, and from the modern pier, tour operators sell water-based excursions.

Steps from the beach are grocery stores, galleries, and coffee shops. The romantic zone is forever evolving. New highrises offering ocean views add a modern element to the traditional stucco red roof buildings.

Puerto Vallarta has some great hotels , and staying here puts you closer to the action.

Los Muertos Beach offers a popular hangout and the most visited beach in Puerto Vallarta. While crowded, it’s a great place to people-watch, drink beer, and go parasailing.

19. Be A Pirate For A Day

Puerto Vallarta pirate ship

Ahoy, ye mateys! Are you ready for some pirate fun? Consider a pirate ship tour if you’re looking to do something out of the ordinary in Puerto Vallarta. You’ll board an authentic-looking pirate ship at the Puerto Vallarta cruise port and sail out into the ocean for some squash-buckling fun.

Pirate recruits can choose from day and evening trips. The tours include a buffet, drinks, and plenty of pirate fun.

20. Go Parasailing

If you have no fear of heights, grab a few friends and take to the skies on a parasailing tour. Parasailing is fun and an inexpensive activity in Mexico. Parasailing tours don’t require a reservation. Expect to pay USD 40 to 45 for a single ride.

I’ve gone parasailing several times on my own and enjoyed a duo parasailing excursion in Cabo San Lucas with my husband, Brian. The romantic zone, south of River Cuale, is a popular place to parasail. While the time spent in the sky isn’t long (maybe 15 minutes), it’s enough to savor the views of the Pacific coast below.

When traveling to Mexico by cruise ship, you should be aware that Puerto Vallarta is in a different time zone to Cabo San Lucas and Mazatlan. Sometimes cruise ships change their clocks one day and back the next.

It’s important to know the time in port and when you need to return to the ship.

Baltimore cruises to reroute after bridge collapse pauses port traffic

Carnival, royal caribbean will move some operations to norfolk while baltimore recovers from key bridge collapse.

2 day cruise to puerto vallarta

Cruise lines are scrambling to make alternative plans and avoid the Port of Baltimore while officials suspend vessel traffic amid cleanup and rescue efforts around the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse.

Three major cruise lines sail from Baltimore, though no ships were in port Tuesday morning. The next cruise was scheduled to depart Sunday, but its operator confirmed late Tuesday afternoon that the voyage would instead head out from Norfolk.

Amira M. Hairston, a spokeswoman for the Baltimore port, said in an email that the status of the upcoming cruise ship schedule is not yet known.

“At this time we do not know how long vessel traffic will be suspended. As soon as that is determined we will provide an update. Until then please keep those involved in your prayers,” Hairston wrote.

Royal Caribbean International’s Vision of the Seas left Saturday for a 12-night southern Caribbean cruise with plans to return April 4. The cruise line said in a statement Tuesday that it was “closely monitoring the situation, and our port logistics team is currently working on alternatives for Vision of the Seas’ ongoing and upcoming sailings.”

On Thursday, the cruise company said the current sailing would end in Norfolk.

“Our guests on board will be provided compensation and complimentary shuttle transportation as well as Wi-Fi and phone calls to adjust their travel arrangements,” Royal Caribbean said.

Upcoming cruises on April 4 and 12 will sail from Norfolk as well, and passengers will be compensated for the change. The ship was already scheduled for maintenance in the Bahamas after the April 12 cruise.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragedy and collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge and extend our heartfelt prayers to all those impacted,” the company said.

Carnival Legend set off Sunday for a seven-day Bahamas cruise; the ship was scheduled to return March 31 and depart for its next sailing the same day. Instead of coming back to Baltimore, Carnival said late Tuesday, it will end its trip in Norfolk, and free buses will bring passengers back to Baltimore.

The ship’s next seven-day cruise will leave Norfolk and return to the port. In a news release , Carnival said it would temporarily move Baltimore operations to Norfolk “while Key Bridge rescue and cleanup efforts continue.”

“Our thoughts remain with the impacted families and first responders in Baltimore,” Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, said in a statement. “We appreciate the pledge made by President Biden today to dedicate all available resources to reopen Baltimore Harbor to marine traffic as soon as possible. As those plans are finalized, we will update our future cruise guests on when we will return home to Baltimore, but in the meantime, we appreciate the quick response and support from officials in Norfolk.”

Carnival Pride is supposed to start sailing from Baltimore next month, mostly to the Bahamas and eastern Caribbean.

Norwegian Cruise Line does not have cruises scheduled out of the port until later this year. American Cruise Lines, a U.S. river cruise operator, has Chesapeake Bay trips on small vessels scheduled from Baltimore starting in May. The cruise line said it will monitor developments “and make adjustments if needed.”

Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) said it was “deeply saddened” by the bridge collapse and was closely following the situation. “Right now, the most important thing to do is to allow the emergency workers to do their work,” the group wrote in a statement.

This year, 12 ships are scheduled to make a total of 115 calls at the Port of Baltimore, the industry association said. With room for roughly 2,000 or 2,100 passengers at double occupancy, most Baltimore-based ships are much smaller than the record-breaking behemoths that sail from Florida ports.

“Any adjustments to current cruise activity at the port will be announced as soon as available by the individual cruise lines,” CLIA said in its statement.

A news release issued last month by Maryland Gov. Wes Moore’s office said that more than 444,000 individuals cruised out of the Port of Baltimore last year, the most since 2012. The Maryland Port Administration said in a news release last year that the cruise industry generates nearly 400 jobs and $63 million in revenue every year for local businesses.

The port positions itself as a convenient option for cruising year-round, thanks to its location off Interstate 95 and plentiful parking. More than 40 million people live within a six-hour drive of the city, the port administration says.

Baltimore bridge collapse

How it happened: Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed after being hit by a cargo ship . The container ship lost power shortly before hitting the bridge, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) said. Video shows the bridge collapse in under 40 seconds.

Victims: Divers have recovered the bodies of two construction workers , officials said. They were fathers, husbands and hard workers . A mayday call from the ship prompted first responders to shut down traffic on the four-lane bridge, saving lives.

Economic impact: The collapse of the bridge severed ocean links to the Port of Baltimore, which provides about 20,000 jobs to the area . See how the collapse will disrupt the supply of cars, coal and other goods .

Rebuilding: The bridge, built in the 1970s , will probably take years and cost hundreds of millions of dollars to rebuild , experts said.
