Carristur operate yellow buses while Gray Line and City Sightseeing run red buses. As Carristur are owned by the public transport company of Lisbon (Carris) they have their main hub in the centre of Baixa in the Praça da Figueira. The other two companies have their hub at the Praça Marquês de Pombal, a little way from the centre of Lisbon. A selection of the best bus tours are:

Are the Hop-on hop-off buses good value?

The Hop-on hop-off buses have their flaws but are one of the better value tourist activities in Lisbon. There are so many different options for the bus tickets but a typical 24-hour ticket costs around €20 and is significantly better value than the tuk-tuk tours. A 1-hour tuk-tuk tour for 3 people of just central Lisbon is around €50 and to include Belem would be more than €100.

The open-air tour buses are also great value when compared to similar tours in other popular holiday destinations, tours in Paris, Rome and London are 50-100% more expensive. The tour tickets are for 24 or 48 hours, which is much better than just providing a single day, and allows time on the following morning to use the ticket.

A City Sightseeing tour bus

The tour buses are very poor value when compared to public transport in Lisbon. A single metro ticket costs €1.90 and an unlimited 24-hour public transport ticket only costs €6.00. These unlimited tickets are exceptional value as they include the number 28 tram, the Elevador de Santa Justa and the Elevador da Gloria – three great tourist attractions for free!

Basic Routes and Extra Options or Upsells

All three of the Hop-on hop-off bus companies have two basic routes and a series of additional upsells and addons. At the core of each company’s routes will be one route heading from central Lisbon west to Belem and a secondary route covering the eastern and northern sides of Lisbon. The tour to the west and Belem should always be the first route taken, this is the Tagus Bus Tour (Carristur), Belém Line (Grayline) and Red Line (City Sightseeing).

The bus tours to the north and eastern sides of Lisbon visit the ultra-modern Parque das Nações but there can be long spells of not much to see. The Parque das Nações is great for a half day but can be easily reached by metro or the 728 bus. The Olisipo Bus Tour (Carristur), Oriente Line (Grayline) and Blue Line (City Sightseeing) routes will have less stops that you want to get off at and it’s probably better just to remain on the bus for the entire route.

The Parque das Nações

The tour operators may include tour routes of the castle or Alfama but due to the narrow roads only small buses (or trams) can make this route. During the summer, these specialist routes can become very crowded. The districts of Alfama and Baixa are best explored by foot and while waiting for a tour bus/tram the majority of the district could have been explored!

A tram tour addon is always enjoyable, as the once scenic number 28 tram is always crowded and now plagued with pickpockets.

The next section details the main sights and attractions at each of the stops along the route. For this section, we have followed the Carristur Yellow Bus Official Sightseeing routes as this is the most popular tour company in Lisbon.

Restauradores: The Eden Theatre, regarded as the best example of Art Deco in Portugal faces onto this square with its large monument commemorating Portugal’s independence from Spanish  rule. The funicular Elevador da Gloria, starts from here and slow grinds up the steep hill. Av. da Liberdade: Tree lined avenue which is the central attraction during the popular saint festivities. Marquês de Pombal: The statue in the centre of the roundabout is the Marquês de Pombal who redesigned Rossio and Baixa after the earthquake of 1755 . The hop on off tour stops at the top of the large park (Parque Eduardo VII) and makes for a pleasant.

Saldanha: Home to 2 large and very expensive shopping centers not really any point to hop off. Campo Pequeno: Lisbon’s bull ring is influence by the Moorish style of building and originates from 1892 in a Moorish style. Unlike the bullfighting in Portugal’s larger neighbor, the bulls are not put to death after the spectacle and are considerable less distressed. Below the bull ring is a good shopping center Atrium Saldana.

Praça de Espanha : This square contains the imposing Arch of St Benedict. Close by is the Foundation Calouste Gulbenkian, a world-class museum and cultural center. Parque Eduardo VII: Named after the visit of King Edward VII (UK) in 1907 to Lisbon. The viewing platform offers views down the park and over historic Lisbon (Rossio and Baixa)

Amoreiras: The business district of Lisbon, with the distinctive Amoreiras Towers – which in my opinion  are extremely ugly. Estrela: A pleasant stop for the 18th century neoclassical Estrela Basilica and the Jardim da Estrela . The docks: The trendy bar and restaurant district close to the Ponte Abril bridge. During day time can be very quiet and is expensive to eat here.

Fundação Oriente: The location of the Orient Museum Torre de Belem: The first stop in the pretty district of Belem. Mosteiro dos Jeronimos: The grand monastery built on the site where Vasco da Gama spent his last night before his momentous voyage.

Belem: This stop is  just outside the famous Pastry Natus the home of Lisbon’s custard tart and a great place for a Bica (strong coffee) The trams also leave from this location for Praça do Commercial. Museu da Carris: The Carris transport museum, convenient as this is a Carris tour!

Museu de Arte Antiga: The Ancient Art Museum contains important European works by artists such as Bosch, Dürer, and Raphael. You can also see interesting 16th century Japanese screens recording the arrival of the Portuguese in Japan and much more. Praça Comércio: The historic docks of Lisbon where adventures and sailors would sell their wares to the merchants of the Iberian Peninsula.

Olisipo Route - Yellow Bus Official Sightseeing

Praça Comércio: The central square surrounded by traditionally painted yellow government offices Alfama: The oldest district of Lisbon, once a haven for all the undesirables now full of character and step streets. A labyrinth of narrow streets and the oldest part of Lisbon. Campo de Santa Clara: Location for large market on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Estação Santa Apolonia: Old central railway station with connections to the north and Europe. Museu da Agua: Museum of water, Lisbon has always suffered with shortages of drinking water and has lead to the construction of some of Lisbon’s most grand architecture, eg the 14 mile aqueduct. Museu do Azulejo: Museum focusing on the tradition of  paint on  tiles. Poço do Bispo: Port area and estuary of the River Tagus.

Parque das Nações: The location of Expo 98 and the modern side of Lisbon. This area less than 20 years ago was abandoned docks and oil processing  now is the wealthiest place in the city. Gare do Oriente: A stunningly train station built over 3 levels of ultra modernism , the station connects to Vasco da Gama shopping center. Aeroporto: Lisbon Airport. Entrecampos: A square containing a monument to the heroes of the Peninsula War. Sete Rios: Supposedly the location of seven rivers but all I see is lots of buses as this is the location of the main coach station. Av. José Malhoa: The financial district of Lisbon. El corte Ingles: Huge branch of a major Spanish department store. Parque Eduardo VII: Parque Eduardo named after the visit of King Edward VII (UK) in 1907 to Lisbon. The viewing platform offers views down the park and over historic Lisbon ( Rossio and Baixa ) Principe Real: This district has a pleasant square and garden and colorful 19th century mansions. Bairro Alto: By day the narrow streets appear graffiti covered and dingy but by night this is the trendiest area of Lisbon, lots of small bars, drinking on the street and a great atmosphere, just don’t drink to much and keep an eye on your wallet. Chiado : The theater district of Lisbon which was burnt to the ground in a major fire of 1988. There has been a massive regeneration program and is a great area for shopping.

Further Information about Lisbon Tour Buses

There are three companies which operate hop-on hop-off tours of Lisbon and each of the companies offer similar routes, prices and services. All three companies offer two separate routes that last for around 90 minutes.

For all of the tour companies the route which heads north and west (to Belem) is more interesting than the north and east (to Expo Park) route and should be the first route travelled.

The original tour bus company of Lisbon operate the yellow buses and is a subsidiary of Carris the main bus and tram company of Lisbon. The yellow bus tour company offer two bus routes, a single route ticket costs €15.00 and the ticket is valid for 24 hours while the price for both routes is €24.00.

The main advantage of the yellow bus tours is that their tickets allow for unlimited travel on all standard buses, trams and includes the Elevador de Santa Justa. Carris tours have more buses running their routes and run longer into the night but their commentary is the weakest.

Lisbon Tour Buses Further Information

City Sightseeing operates the red buses and their two routes that are almost identical to the Yellow Bus Company. The City Sightseeing 24 hour ticket for both routes is better value at €18.00 but they have the less buses than Carris meaning waits for buses are longer.

The third company is Grayline tour buses who again operate red buses, the ticket they offer is slightly different and lasts for 48 hours but costs €20. Grayline offer 3 routes and are probably the best option for tourists with more time but Grayline tour have fewer services than Carris.

In conclusion all three companies offer a very similar service and tourist should be on the look out for internet offers or local offers before as on board prices will always be more expensive. One of the main consideration is choosing to join a tour bus is the price of a ticket which is very expensive when compared to the cheap price of public transport in Lisbon.

The main hub and start of all the tours is at Praça do Marquês de Pombal (top of Avenida da Liberdade) on the Yellow metro line. This is the easiest location to join each of the tours especially for Grayline and City Sightseeing as their main stops in Baixa are not very obvious. At Marquis of Pombal there are always tour buses waiting.

M any tourists like to take hop-on hop-off bus tours, but in Lisbon that’s only recommended if you’re in town for as little as 24 hours. The city is best explored on foot, as many of the narrow streets and surrounding attractions aren’t even accessible by bus. These tours, however, do take you to many districts that require different transportation connections, so are good for those with limited time. They offer 24-hour tickets, meaning you can use them over two calendar days (the 24 hours start counting when you first validate the ticket). These tours also have commentary in different languages, although guidebooks or online guides provide much better information. It’s also worth noting that, due to traffic (and high demand in the summer season), there may be long waits at the different stops.

There are three companies providing hop-on hop-off bus tours in Lisbon. One departs from Praça da Figueira downtown, and the other two depart from Edward VII Park (on the southern end, facing the Marquês de Pombal roundabout). They all provide similar services, taking almost identical routes. Always take a look at the frequency and scheduled times of each departure, as some services only depart every 90 minutes. It’s recommended that you take the entire route first, and then hop off in the areas or by the monuments of your interest on your second journey. The districts of Belém (with the major landmarks and museums) and Parque das Nações (the modern waterfront) are the two main stops. For the old town ( Alfama ) and around the castle, you’ll have to take a tram tour (see below).

Prices start at around €20 for city-wide tours. There are many options available, including excursions to destinations outside Lisbon. Booking online guarantees the best deals.

Yellow Bus Official Sightseeing Tours

Operated by the city’s public transportation company, these buses are distinguished by their yellow color (the other companies’ buses are red). They have the advantage of offering free rides on the Santa Justa Elevator and the city’s funiculars . Some tickets include a river cruise , making them the best value. There are also tram tours (the most recommended, as they always guarantee a seat, unlike the always-packed public trams). There are departures every 20 or 30 minutes, until 5, 6 or 7pm, depending on the line and the season. Gray Line / Cityrama

The Gray Line, operated by Cityrama, is present in many cities. It offers four routes -- one that goes up to the castle on a smaller bus, another that goes to Belém, another that goes to Oriente (Parque das Nações), and yet another to Cascais . You may buy 24- or 48-hour tickets, and choose to just go up to the castle, choose Belém + one another route (castle, Parque das Nações/Oriente, or Cascais), or Belém + 2 other routes, or all 4 routes (Belém, Castle, Parque das Naçõe/Oriente, and Cascais). The advantage of this company is that is has the option to the beaches of Cascais. Its first departure in the summer is at 9am, and in the winter it’s at 9:30am. City Sightseeing

This company offers two routes, with one of them passing by the Tile Museum , which is one of Lisbon’s greatest attractions but located outside the center and with few public transportation links. It goes through downtown, then along the riverfront -- one in the direction of Parque das Nações in the east, and the other towards Belém in the west. Both routes take about 1 hour to complete, and there are buses every 30 minutes until around 5pm. You may book your tickets here: - 24- or 48-hour ticket to the two lines

Sightseeing Tours Highlights

Here are some of the sights covered by these tours:

Avenida da Liberdade - Lisbon’s grand central boulevard, known for its luxury shopping. On your tour, look down and admire the beautiful cobble designs of the pavements and notice the architecture of the buildings around Restauradores Square at the end of the avenue.

Campo Pequeno and Praça de Espanha - Two busy squares in the modern Avenidas Novas district. The first is home to the bullring from 1892 that’s now mostly a concert venue, and the other is the stop for the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum , which houses Lisbon’s greatest art collection.

Amoreiras - Little visited by tourists, the glass towers of Amoreiras are iconic of modern Lisbon and house a shopping mall and an observation deck at the top. From here it’s possible to walk to the monumental aqueduct .

Estrela - The stop for one of Lisbon’s grandest churches and its most pleasant park. The food hall of the market in the neighborhood of Campo de Ourique is within walking distance.

Belém - The main hop-off stop and where tourists spend most of their time. There are the World Heritage monuments ( Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower ), the great museums ( Coaches Museum , MAAT , MAC/CCB Museum , among others), and the famous custard tarts.

Parque das Nações - Many choose to stay on the bus and admire the architecture and the river as they move through the district. However, there are many reasons to hop off here, as it’s Lisbon’s most modern district, with a wonderful waterfront promenade, the spectacular Oceanarium, and some striking examples of contemporary architecture worth a closer look.

T he Portuguese capital of Lisbon is a fabulous city for all ages. It is one of the safest cities worldwide, so it’s a great option for a family trip. Lisbon is culturally rich with many historic sites and museums. It might sound boring to teenagers, but some are really cool! There is always something going on in this lively and vibrant city. Be sure to check out any special events, festivals, or music performances that are scheduled during your visit. If you’re traveling to Lisbon with teenagers, there are plenty of places to explore! Check out some of our favorites.

Best Places to Visit in Lisbon with Teenagers

​ The best way to explore Lisbon is by foot. However, there are plenty of steep hills throughout the city, so it might take longer to walk from one place to the next.

We had good luck using Uber if we needed it, but there are also plenty of taxis and tuk tuk drivers to take you to your destination. We also used the  hop-on hop-off bus tour  for transportation one day because it has several routes through the city and saved our tired feet. No matter how you choose to explore Lisbon, we are sure the whole family will enjoy Portugal’s capital city.

1. The Oceanarium

The  Oceanarium  is one of the most visited places in Lisbon amongst families. It’s one of the largest indoor aquariums in Europe, and it’s located in Parque das Nações. The aquarium features a central tank that holds an incredible 5 million liters of saltwater! 

The aquarium is designed to represent the open ocean, and you can discover many unique species of marine life in the water. Keep an eye out for rays, sunfish, sharks, and fish from around the world. There are dedicated spots where otters and penguins play and do their shenanigans. 

If there are younger children in your family there are plenty of educational opportunities, and the Oceanário de Lisboa is a highlight for many visitors. 

2. Go surfing

If you or your kids prefer to be in the ocean, why not try surfing lessons? Lisbon is very close to The Atlantic Ocean, and you can find several surf schools along the coast. Do you know how to surf? You can also rent your gear here. 

Ericeira is a famous surf town, but Praia do Guincho is closer to Lisbon. Other popular surf spots are Praia da Adraga and Costa da Caparica. 

Lisbon’s surf season runs from September to May, but that means the waves are also higher. The surf in Lisbon can be challenging during this time, so it’s best for intermediate to advanced surfers. 

Did you know some of the highest waves surfed are in Nazaré Portugal? Between October and March, you can expect ginormous waves here, and it is a must-see if you like surfing.

In summer, the waves are smaller and perfect for learning how to surf. The ocean will also be slightly warmer!

The surf camps offer lessons and coaching for all levels of surfers. They also usually provide all the necessary equipment, including wetsuits and boards, and can arrange transportation to the best surf spots.

3. Take a day trip to Sintra

Sintra is a picturesque town located just outside of Lisbon, and you can easily reach it in 40 minutes by car. You can also use public transportation to reach Sintra from Lisbon by taking the metro from Rossio Train Station to Sintra at the end of the route. If you want someone else to do all of the transportation, consider  booking a local guide  to take you to Sintra.

Sintra was a popular destination for Portuguese royalty and aristocracy, and the place is famous for its many palaces and mansions. There are many historic landmarks, including the Moorish Castle, the Pena Palace, and the Quinta da Regaleira. In addition to the stunning architecture, there are fabulous gardens that you can visit. 

Sintra is located within the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, which is also an excellent place for hiking. Along the coast of Sintra, you’ll discover some of the best beaches close to Lisbon. 

If you’re up for a coastal hike, Praia da Ursa is one of the area’s most beautiful beaches! However, Praia da Adraga and Praia Grande are a lot easier to reach.

4. Visit the LX Factory

In the Alcântara neighborhood of Lisbon, you can visit the LX Factory . This complex was once a textile manufacturing factory but has become a cultural and creative hub. It’s a popular spot for all ages due to the many restaurants, shops, street art, and design studios. 

Check out the sculpture Bumblebee by Bordalo II, visit the coolest bookstore  Ler Devagar  or discover the fabulous shops. There are often events such as concerts, DJ nights, and cultural festivals. So from early morning until night, there is always something to do here!

5. Check out the street art

Speaking of street art, Lisbon has plenty of it! It’s scattered throughout the city, and a  guided tour   will ensure you’ll get to see the most important displays. 

Bordalo II is one of Lisbon’s favorite artists, and he creates sculptures and murals from waste. Discover the artworks of Raposa, Big Raccoon, Monkey, Pelicans, and Iberian Lynx in the city. Vhills is another prominent artist with works all over Lisbon. Brazilian artists Os Gemeos, Italy’s BLU, and Spain’s SAM3 all left a mark on the city! 

Other well-known works are from Pichiavo at Rua de Santa Apolonia, the revolutionary mural by Shepard Fairey on Rua Natalia Correia, and chief Raoni Metuktire by Eduardo Kobra on Rua Alberto José Pessoa.

6. Take a ride on Tram 28

Tram 28 is an icon in Lisbon, and a ride on the historic cable car is a favorite of many! The tram has been in operation since 1914 and is one of the last remaining traditional streetcar routes in Lisbon. It was originally used to transport goods and people, but today it is a popular tourist attraction. 

Unfortunately, the queue can be long, but there is also an option to take an old historical tram tour instead. The tram ride goes through some of the most picturesque neighborhoods in Lisbon! If you have a public transport card, you pay a little less, but it’s public transport, so you pay per ride. There are, however, many interesting points where you can disembark. 

Examples are Miradouro da Graça, Sé Cathedral , Miradouro de Santa Luzia, and Igreja de São Vicente de Fora, which are all located in the Alfama district. 

The endpoint of the train is on the other side of town, close to Jardim da Estrela. While Tram 28 is a classic Lisbon experience, it’s not the only way to see the city’s historic neighborhoods. Walking tours, bike rentals, and other forms of transportation are also available, offering a more personalized and flexible way to explore the city’s many sights and sounds.

7. Discover Alfama

Alfama  is the oldest neighborhood in Lisbon. It’s also a charming place with many narrow streets and tourist highlights. On top of the hill, you can visit Castelo de São Jorge (St. George’s Castle). You can walk along the castle walls to enjoy some of the best views over Lisbon! The surrounding park is full of peacocks, and around the castle are many beautiful streets. 

Besides the castle, there are many other viewing platforms throughout the city. From Miradouro das Portas do Sol and Miradouro de Santa Luzia, you enjoy a stunning view over Alfama and the river Tagus. 

Discover the small streets full of azulejo tiles and enjoy a night of Fado. Alfama is the birthplace of Fado, a traditional Portuguese music style that is often described as melancholic and soulful. There are many Fado bars and restaurants where you can experience this unique cultural tradition. 

On Tuesdays and Saturdays, it’s fun to visit the flea markets at Feira da Ladra. And if you’re in Lisbon in June, Alfama is THE place to be. The Santo António is celebrated throughout Lisbon, but most celebrations are in this neighborhood. There are parades, street parties, and a lot of sardines!

8. Fun museums to visit in Lisbon with teenagers

Although it doesn’t rain often, having a backup plan for your family vacation is always a good idea. Lisbon has a lot of museums, especially in the Belém neighborhood! Some of the museums that teens might like in this area include –

• Berardo Collection Museum (modern art)
• The Museum of Art, Architecture, and Technology (MAAT)
• The National Coach Museum (a collection of horse-drawn carriages)
• The Maritime Museum
• Calouste Gulbenkian Planetarium
• National Archaeological Museum.

A relatively new museum in Belém is  Quake – The Lisbon Earthquake Experience . This one is a bit more serious, in the sense that it’s about the destroying 1755 earthquake that hit Lisbon and many other places in Portugal.

You travel back in time to relive Lisbon’s most dramatic and transformative event and learn more about the history and science of earthquakes. It’s an immersive experience with simulators, video mapping, and interactive 4D technology. This is sure to be a favorite for teens!

Belém is also home to several UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the Jerónimos Monastery which dates to the 16th century, and Belem Tower (Torre de Belem) which was a departure point for many of Portugal’s famous early explorers, including Magellan and Vasco da Gama. While you’re exploring the area, be sure to stop at Pasteis de Belem, which has been baking the famous pasteis de nata (Portuguese custard tarts) since 1837.

If you need another place to explore on a rainy day in Lisbon, check out the  3D Fun Art Museum Lisboa . As the name implies, everything here is in 3D, which is great for pictures! You can take pictures upside down and in distorted rooms with illusions. Your imagination can roam freely here! It’s a fun activity for all families! 

9. Ride the Santa Justa Lift to the Bairro Alto

​ The Santa Justa Lift, an iconic elevator towering over the city, offers breathtaking panoramic views of central Lisbon and beyond. This is the easiest way to get between the Baixa district and the Bairro Alto. A ride is included in a 24-hour Lisbon transportation ticket.

Once you’ve arrived at the top, walk to the Carmo Convent and the convent ruins. This building was mostly destroyed in 1755 by the deadliest earthquake in Lisbon’s history. Teens will be fascinated by the remains of this building with its gigantic arches and columns. There’s also a small archaeology museum on-site that’s included in the ticket price.

10. Outdoor Activities on the Water

If your teens want more than surfing, you can visit Lisbon beaches such as Praia de Carcavelos, Praia do Tamariz, and Praia das Avencas. 

Cascais is also a lovely beach town to visit, and from Lisbon, you can travel here easily by train. You can also take the ferry across the Tagus River and see the Christ statue in Almada. There is a fabulous view over Lisbon and the Ponte 25 de Abril bridge from this point. 

From here, you can easily reach Costa da Caparica, with many more beaches. Along these coastal towns are opportunities to try kayaking, kitesurfing, and canoeing. You can even  book a sailing tour  on the Tagus to enjoy a relaxing view from the water. Most ships depart from Belém, and a  sunset tour  is especially magical.

11. Try all the food!

​ Portuguese cuisine does not disappoint and teens will love a  Lisbon food tour  that allows them to try bite-size dishes of local favorites. If you don’t have time for a tour, be sure to make a stop at Time Out Market in the Mercado da Ribeira. This food hall showcases some of the best chefs in the city, and teens will love the variety of dishes. Our teens loved it so much, we ate there for dinner two out of three nights!

Lisbon is the perfect spot for a vacation with teens. With beaches, a rich history, unique museums, and delicious food, it’s sure to be a trip they will never forget!
