Travel Ruby Shares Critical Travel Tips for Las Vegas (But Many Work Anywhere)

Las Vegas skyline view

YouTuber Travel Ruby does an excellent job sharing her experiences in Las Vegas, whether it be rooms, pools, restaurants, good deals and more. Some of her strongest tips are summarized in one of her latest videos, where she works through 10 must know tips for Las Vegas. But the real tip is many of these work outside of Las Vegas too.

I want to highlight a couple of her suggestions in today’s post, as well as add additional thoughts above and beyond her tips in the video.

Regularly Check Room Rates Against Your Reservation

One of her great tips that can work anywhere is to regularly check hotel pricing for the room you booked. In Las Vegas it can theoretically get a bit more complicated, because room comps can be in play, so I’m going to take her tip and break out a bit of additional advice on this, based on whether you’re comped or not.

Paid Room Rates

Ruby’s tip about checking to see if room prices have gone down is a great one, especially when booking direct with the hotels. Pricing is highly variable in Las Vegas, and things can evolve over time. So sometimes prices can go down, and if it does, you can contact the hotel and update your booking to get the lower rate, or cancel and rebook online.

The same can be said just about anywhere though – I often book direct through Marriott for rooms when I travel for cruises or to see family and friends. I will periodically check to see if the rates change; I have had examples of room rates going down, and being able to update my reservation to take advantage of that change.

Comped Rooms

If your room is already comped, why would you check back in? Well, in Las Vegas, many times comped rooms are part of a larger offer. And these offers can sometimes get updated. For instance, MGM began offering bonus mid-week free play for bookings made after a certain date.

When I visited Las Vegas in September/October, I had revised one of my bookings after that date, and the other I hadn’t. As it turns out I only got the mid-week resort credit on the one I had revised, because it now qualified for the new offer.

So it helps to check your offers and see if your offers have improved, and rebook if they have.

Similarly, if room rates are drifting downward, you may qualify for comped rooms in properties that have availability that you didn’t previously. Or you may qualify for a better room type.

This is a bit easier to do with Caesars than MGM, because you can see your rates even if you have something booked already. MGM is a bit tougher, but you can get a sense of how things are evolving from the room rate calendar, as it won’t show comps but it will show your price.

Avoid Overplanning Your Trip

I’ve talked about this in my suggestions about surviving longer trips to Vegas , but one of the biggest mistakes many make is overplanning their trip, and then tuckering themselves out and not accomplishing everything they’ve planned.

I now work with a wish list of things I want to do (I’m almost a dozen trips into Vegas, so my list now drifts beyond many of the basics into things that I just haven’t been able to make time for so far). I always aim to do at least one new thing in Vegas, whether stay at a new property, try a new experience, find new food options to enjoy or check out something I haven’t seen before, whether a museum, a show or whatnot.

But I also try not to put too many specifics down, preferring instead to have general ideas and play some of it by ear. At this point I have friends in Vegas, almost always seem to know someone who’s there when I am, and ultimately want to make time to hang with friends (which can be a great tip for slowing down gambling in the process).

Some people plan short trips because Vegas is “exhausting,” but it’s only exhausting if you overschedule yourself and run yourself ragged on your vacation. Of course, if all you can swing is a couple of nights, I get it, but as someone who’s never gone for less than a week, I always treat Vegas like a marathon, not a sprint.

Comparing Transportation Options

I previously shared my incomplete list of transportation options in Las Vegas , but there’s plenty of ways to get around, and if you’re not price comparing, you’re likely going to overpay a percentage of the time. Even just between Uber and Lyft the price differences can be striking.

There are lots of ways to get around, though, and depending on how quickly you want to get places, and how much walking you’re willing to do, there’s everything from free trams to rental cars, monorails to buses, so you can figure out what makes sense for you.

Of course this advice can work anywhere as well, although the transit options may differ. One visit to Miami I took a train up to visit someone in Fort Lauderdale, so knowing what transit options are available can be quite helpful.

Check out her video, as well as her channel in general, for a variety of great tips and suggestions!

Couple frustrated after Resorts World booking falls through

A local couple hasn’t pieced together why their Crockfords luxury hotel room reservation fell through at the newly opened Strip resort.

A local couple hasn’t pieced together why their Crockfords luxury hotel room reservation fell through at the newly opened Resorts World and why they only discovered that fact on the first day of their reservation.

All they know is they’re now staying at the Hilton Conrad hotel, and they’re not pleased with how things have played out.

“Last night, I checked in using their digital check-in, got an email that said, ‘You’re checked into Crockfords,’” said Alex Chapman, a Las Vegas resident who was celebrating his 35th birthday with a staycation at the new resort. “And this morning, I checked in my digital key, and it said, ‘Check in to Conrad. Also, we’re charging you $100 more.’”

They might not be alone. A travel vlogger who goes by the name Travel Ruby and her husband complained in a YouTube livestream Friday that — like the Chapmans — their Crockfords reservation was also changed at the last minute to a Hilton Conrad reservation without their knowledge.

Resorts World opened to the public at 11 p.m. Thursday as the first Strip resort built in a decade. It’s unclear how many of the rooms at its three Hilton-branded hotels opened. Crockfords is the property’s high-end hotel with 236 rooms and suites, a private entrance and tailored guest services.

Resorts World executives said in a statement to the Review-Journal that Crockfords is open in a limited capacity as staff “put the finishing touches on a few suites,” but multiple guests say they’ve been told otherwise by hotel employees.

“We’ve seen very high demand for Crockfords and will continue to release additional inventory following opening,” the statement read.

A spokeswoman declined to answer additional questions about room availability, potential guest transfers and accommodations.

The Resorts World booking page Friday said Crockfords bookings are “unavailable” until July 12. Hilton’s website also said no Crockfords rooms are available until that date.

A Hilton representative referred a comment request to Resorts World.

“Resorts World Las Vegas is an independently owned and operated property and we cannot speak on the hotel’s behalf,” the representative wrote in an email.

The Chapmans decided to take the Conrad room. In a phone conversation Friday evening from their Conrad room, Alex and Katrina Chapman said they’ve received conflicting explanations from Resorts World staff throughout the day.

The Chapmans said hotel staff told them that Crockfords was open — their room just wasn’t ready. Alex Chapman said that might make sense, as he’s noticed people in the Crockfords elevators.

“We came here and the first thing I asked the Conrad checking people was what’s going on with Crockfords, and she had no idea what I’m talking about,” Alex Chapman recalled. “And I said I heard it was closed. There’s no rooms. She goes, ‘No,’ just not the room we booked.”

But after Katrina Chapman reached out to Resorts World on Instagram to complain about their reservation, Alex Chapman got a call from an employee who said that the hotel was “completely closed.”

“That not a single human being was staying in there, that they couldn’t finish construction in time,” Alex Chapman said.

“He repeated that over and over,” added Katrina Chapman.

“No one was staying,” said Alex.

The vlogger Travel Ruby said in a Friday livestream from the hotel pool complex and also their Hilton Conrad room that she and her husband were told something similar. She said she and her husbanddidn’t find out their Crockfords reservation was canceled until arriving at the check-in desk Friday.

“They let us in the lobby and then she goes, ‘We have a room for you at the Conrad,’” Ruby begins, “and I’m like ‘I’m sorry?’ and they were like ‘Did no one contact you?’”

“No?” she continues, “They’re like ‘none of the Crockfords rooms are ready at all. None are ready. There’s no Crockfords rooms right now.”

Mr. Ruby adds: “They told us that Paris Hilton is staying here and even she isn’t staying in it.”

The couple said they were offered a comped suite for their next Resorts World stay because they weren’t contacted about their reservation change.

The Chapmans think their weekend might be a lost cause.

“It’s supposed to be three tiers of nice rooms. So we paid for the nice one,” Alex Chapman said.

Staff on property have been kind and helpful, Katrina Chapman said. Though the pair feels they’ve gotten the runaround, they’re trying to make the best of their stay, she said. They just want to know what happened.

“I still really have no idea,” Alex Chapman said.

Ruby Falls Cave Tours on Lookout Mountain Near Chattanooga TN

W hen I was growing up in North Georgia , you couldn’t swing a stick without hitting a sign (or barn) promoting Rock City and Ruby Falls.

If you were taking a family road trip to “See Rock City,” Ruby Falls was simply a must-see, because these two Lookout Mountain attractions are less than four miles apart.

The Ruby Falls cave tour tapped into my lifelong fascination with caves , which– as a boy– seemed to me so primal and filled with a mixture of adventure, danger, and  mystery .

Located just over 4 miles from the heart of Downtown Chattanooga, Ruby Falls tours include a ride on a glass elevator that descends 260 feet into the heart of Lookout Mountain.

Then the relatively easy 1-mile round-trip Ruby Falls cave walk leads visitors to see the tallest and deepest of the underground waterfalls in the United States that are open to the public.

Ruby Falls History

The history of the Ruby Falls cave dates back some 200 million years. In the Paleozoic era, much of the Smoky Mountains  region of   Tennessee were under a sea, whose sediment gradually formed into limestone rock.

When the planet’s tectonic plates shifted and formed Lookout Mountain, acidic groundwater went into subterranean streams, carving out the limestone and widening passages via chemical weathering.

Over the centuries, the adjacent Lookout Mountain Cave proved historically significant. Archaeological digs found prehistoric bones that were carbon dated back to the last Ice Age.

Much like Craighead Caverns (a.k.a. The Lost Sea) , the cave was a significant source of saltpeter (a.k.a. potassium nitrate, a key ingredient in gunpowder) for the Confederate Army during the Civil War .

A signature many historians believe to be that of U.S. President Andrew Jackson has even been discovered in one of the cave’s passageways!

In 1905, the natural entrance was closed due to construction of a railway tunnel through the mountain.

So the Lookout Mountain cave remained inaccessible to visitors until the 1920s, when local chemist and cave enthusiast Leo Lambert purchased the land above it in hopes of installing an elevator and turning it into a tourist attraction.

After his company began drilling in 1928, they discovered a small passageway that measured just two feet high and four feet wide. After 17 hours of exploration, Lambert found the Ruby Falls Cave and its waterfall , which he named after his wife.

Ruby Falls Cave Tours

We learned about the history of the Lookout Mountain caves  while waiting in line for the glass-front elevator, which took us 260 feet down into the cave.

Ruby Falls Cave Tours vary in size and frequency depending on the time of year you choose to visit, but our tour had one guide leading a group of around 20 people.

These caves have an array of geological formations that formed over thousands of years, with colorful , descriptive names such as “Angel Wings,” “Crystal Chandelier,” “Donkey” (which looks like a donkey’s butt), and “Tobacco Leaves.”

A wide column known as “The Leaning Tower” is the oldest rock formation you’ll see in the cave at Ruby Falls, dating back some 3 to 5 million years!

One word of caution for claustrophobic folks: Sometimes you’ll find yourself sharing narrow walkways between the unique  rocks , giving tour groups coming back to the elevator right of way. So the attraction can feel a bit crowded at times.

After walking for around 35 minutes, two sounds alerted us to the fact that the 145-foot-tall Ruby Falls waterfall was near. The first was the dull roar of rushing water, which was soon accompanied by a dramatic crescendo of dreamy music .

As we entered the main chamber, the waterfall  began to glow with vivid bursts of pink, purple, and blue hues, making it look  a little like an underground fireworks display.

Unfortunately you only get a few minutes to marvel at the spectacle and take a few photos. Then the colorful lights went out and we were quickly led out to make way for the next Ruby Falls tour group.

After perusing the gift shop, we recommend taking time for a brief visit to the Lookout Mountain Tower, which offers an incredible overlook of Chattanooga and the Tennessee River .

Lantern Tours at Ruby Falls

Offered only on select Friday nights, the Ruby Falls Lantern Tour gives guests a chance to explore one of the most popular Chattanooga TN activities at night.

The entire cavern and hiking trails are illuminated by nothing but hand-held lanterns. This allows visitors a chance to see what the Lookout Mountain caves might have looked like during the Civil War era.

Led by experienced guides, the special after-hours tours a more relaxed pace, more in-depth storytelling, limited group sizes, and extra time at the Ruby Falls waterfall.

Children under 5 years old are not allowed on Lantern Tours, and advance reservations are required. Prices are $39.95 for adults and children ages 5 and up.

Another option for visitors who want more time in the cave is the Gentle Walking Tour, which is billed as the most in-depth of all the Ruby Falls Tours.

This tour features fewer participants, a gentle pace aimed at seniors and those with limited mobility, and extra time at the waterfall after the light show is over.

The tour is available at 7:45AM on select Sundays and Thursdays, and is recommended for ages 12 and up due to the pace and focus on history .

Note that due to limited availability, both of these tours often sell out weeks in advance.

When I was growing up in North Georgia, you couldn’t swing a stick without hitting a sign (or barn) promoting Rock City and Ruby Falls.  If you were taking a family road trip to “See Rock City,” Ruby Falls was simply a must-see, because these two Lookout Mountain attractions are less than four miles apart.  The Ruby Falls cave tour tapped into my lifelong fascination with caves, which– as a boy– seemed to me so primal and filled with a mixture of adventure, danger, and mystery. Located just over 4 miles from the heart of Downtown Chattanooga, Ruby Falls tours include ... Read more

Moscow-City: 7 surprising facts about the Russian capital’s business center

travel ruby

1. Guinness World Record in highlining

travel ruby

The record was set in 2019 by a team of seven athletes from Russia, Germany, France and Canada. They did it on September 8, on which the ‘Moscow-City Day’ is celebrated. The cord was stretched at the height of 350 m between the ‘OKO’ (“Eye”) and ‘Neva Towers’ skyscrapers. The distance between them is 245 m. The first of the athletes to cross was Friede Kuhne from Germany. The athletes didn't just walk, but also performed some daredevil tricks. Their record is 103 meters higher than the previous one set in Mexico City in December 2016.

2. Domination of Europe's top-10 highest skyscrapers

7 out of 10 Europe’s highest skyscrapers are located in Moscow-City. Earlier, the  ‘Federation Tower’ complex’s ‘Vostok’ (“East”) skyscraper was the considered the tallest in Europe.

Left to right: the lower of the ‘Neva Towers’ (296 m), Commerzbank Tower in Frankfurt (300 m), Gorod Stolits (“City of Capitals”) Moscow tower (302 m), Eurasia tower (309 m), The Shard’ skyscraper in London (310 m), Mercury City Tower (339 m), Neva Towers (345 m).

However, in 2018, the construction of the 462 meter tall ‘Lakhta Center’ in Saint-Petersburg was completed, pushing ‘Vostok’ (374 m) into 2nd place. The 3rd place is taken by OKO’s southern tower (354 m).

3. The unrealized ‘Rossiya’ tower

travel ruby

If all the building plans of Moscow-City were realized, the ‘Lakhta Center’ in St. Petersburg wouldn't have a chance to be Europe's highest skyscraper. Boris Tkhor, the architect who designed the concept of Moscow-City, had planned for the ‘Rossiya’ tower to be the tallest. In his project, it was a 600 meter tall golden cylindrical skyscraper ending with a spire that was inspired by traditional Russian bell towers. Then, the project was reinvented by famous British architect Sir Norman Foster. He had designed ‘Rossiya’ as a pyramid ending with a spire. The skyscraper itself would have been 612 meters tall, and the height including the spire would have reached 744,5 meters (for comparison, the ‘Burj Khalifa’ in Dubai, UAE, would have been just 83,5 meters taller). Unfortunately, the investors faced a lot of economic problems, due to the 2008 financial crisis, so the ‘Rossiya’ skyscraper was never built. A shopping mall and the ‘Neva Towers’ complex was constructed at its place in 2019.

4. Changed appearance of ‘Federation Tower’

travel ruby

In its first project, the ‘Federation Tower’ was designed to resemble a ship with a mast and two sails. The mast was to be represented by a tall glass spire with passages between the towers. It was planned to make a high-speed lift in it. The top of the spire was going to be turned into an observation deck. But the ship lost its mast in the middle of its construction. Experts at the Moscow-city Museum based in the ‘Imperia’ (“Empire”) tower say, that the construction of the spire was stopped, firstly, due to fire safety reasons and secondly, because it posed a threat to helicopter flights – the flickering glass of the spire could potentially blind the pilots. So, the half-built construction was disassembled. However, an observation deck was opened in the ‘Vostok’ tower.

5. Open windows of ‘Federation Tower’

travel ruby

We all know that the windows of the upper floors in different buildings don’t usually open. Experts say that it’s not actually for people’s safety. Falling from a big height is likely to be fatal in any building. The actual reason is the ventilation system. In a skyscraper, it’s managed with a mechanical system, and the building has its own climate. But in the ‘Zapad’ (“West”) tower of the ‘Federation Tower’ complex, the windows can open. The 62nd and last floor of the tower are taken up by a restaurant called ‘Sixty’. There, the windows are equipped with a special hydraulic system. They open for a short period of time accompanied by classical music, so the guests can take breathtaking photos of Moscow.

6. Broken glass units of ‘Federation Tower’

travel ruby

The guests of the ‘Sixty’ restaurant at the top of the ‘Zapad’ tower can be surprised to see cracked glass window panes. It is particularly strange, if we take into consideration the special type of this glass. It is extremely solid and can’t be broken once installed. For example, during experiments people threw all sorts of heavy items at the windows, but the glass wouldn’t break. The broken glass units of ‘Zapad’ were already damaged during shipment . As each of them is curved in its own way to make the tower’s curvature smooth, making a new set of window panes and bringing them to Russia was deemed too expensive . Moreover, the investors had financial problems (again, due to the 2008 financial crisis), so the ‘Vostok’ tower even stood unfinished for several years. Eventually, the cracked window panes were installed in their place.

7. The highest restaurant in Europe

travel ruby

‘Birds’, another restaurant in Moscow-City, is remarkable for its location. It was opened at the end of 2019 on the 84th floor of the ‘OKO’ complex’s southern tower. Guests at the restaurant can enjoy an amazing panoramic view at a height of 336 meters. On January 28, the experts of ‘Kniga Recordov Rossii’ (“Russian Records Book”) declared ‘Birds’ the highest restaurant in Europe, a step toward an application for a Guinness World Record.
