travel from albuquerque airport to santa fe

Is it the journey or the destination that matters most?  The scenic route from Albuquerque to Santa Fe (better known as the New Mexico Turquoise Trail) lets you enjoy both.  The route takes you past scenic views of Sandia Crest, through old mining towns like Golden and Cerillo, and into the artist enclave of Madrid. Whether you’re looking for a more enjoyable route from the airport or looking for a great Santa Fe day trip, add the Turquoise Trail to your plans.

Driving from Albuquerque to Santa Fe (or vice versa)

On the interstate, Albuquerque to Santa Fe is just 65 miles, or about an hour’s drive.

The Turquoise Trail, though, takes you up the long way, detouring via Tijeras and Route 14.  Although the drive is only a little longer in distance, it’ll take 1 hour & 40 minutes because of the lower speed limit.  If you have time, you can add enough stops along the way to turn the journey into an all-day excursion.

Highlights of the New Mexico Turquoise Trail

Officially, the Turquoise Trail  starts in Tijeras, on historic Route 66, with a musical road as you drive eastbound. As your car passes over rumble strips at 45 miles per hour, tactile vibrations and audible rumblings are transmitted into your car, playing  America the Beautiful  clearly. The Singing Highway  here is one of only two musical roads in the USA, making it worth the short detour.

Continuing northbound on Route 14, you’ll enjoy views of the gorgeous Sandia Mountains, where Sandia Crest overlooks the city at 10,678 feet. A short detour will take you to Sandia Peak for hiking, sledding, or a ride up the world’s second longest tramway.

For something more eclectic, stop in at the Tinkertown Museum , a folk museum of old signs, coin-operated machines, and miniature carvings.

As you return to Route 14, you’ll drive through history. Of the old mining towns, Madrid is the most stop-worthy. The town has come alive with arts and crafts. Enjoy shopping for unique jewelry made from local turquoise, sample organic chocolates, and try out homemade lotions and soaps. If you work up an appetite, this is also a great place to stop for a snack. Jezebel Soda Fountain has ice cream in locally inspired flavors, like red chile chocolate or caramel green chile.

A great last stop on the Turquoise Trail is Garden of the Gods, a park that shows off the cool rock formations in the area. The natural desert setting here just outside of town highlights the scenery that once inspired so many painters, sculptors, and other residents that made Santa Fe famous as an artist’s city.

Once you’ve arrived in Santa Fe, the journey itself is over, but the city is still a wonderful place to visit.  Even on the shortest of visits, dine on New Mexican cuisine at one of the town’s restaurants, peruse art galleries for the perfect souvenir, and bask in views of the Sangre de Cristo mountains.

Next time you’re in Santa Fe, skip that “pedal to the metal” mentality and enjoy this leisurely side trip on the Turquoise Trail in New Mexico.

Can’t wait to take this trip from Albuquerque first week of May with my wife and two sons. Thank you.

@Jay, Have a wonderful trip!

my wife does not like windy roads especially with “cliffs”. Is the highway very windy and or mountainous? Thank you

@Blaine, There are some curves but nothing too outlandish or nerve-wrecking.

Hi, We are thinking of going to Albuquerque and Sante Fe for our 25th wedding anniversary. Is the trail worth it ? Thinking of driving the SF for the day only..maybe twice to avoid staying in the higher elevation. I get altitude sick pretty easily. I don’t want to ruin the trip, like I almost did 25 years ago! Lol Does this sound like a good idea? Thanks

@Eileen, If you only have one day for Santa Fe, I think there are better uses of your time unless there’s something specific along the route you want to see anyway. I also get altitude sickness but avoiding physical activity until acclimated is a huge help, as is staying hydrated and getting plenty of sleep. I know…all of this is easier said than done sometimes! Hope you have a wonderful anniversary and congrats on 25 years!

Outstanding article. Thank you. I’m driving up to Ghost Ranch first week of May from ABQ and plan to stop in Santa Fe for the evening – now I know a better way to get there!

@George, Ghost Ranch is a special place. Enjoy!

Anyone can confirm that the Turquoise trail to Santa Fe from Albuquerque doesn’t involve hairpin turns and scary drop-offs? Like en route to Yosemite or Big Sur? Thank you.

@Donna, This is not nothing like the California hairpin turns or drop-offs. My mom is a nervous rider and has no issue on the Turquoise Trail.

Are there any hotels along the way?

New Mexico is called the “Land of Enchantment” and I’ve gotta say – it has certainly enchanted me. I’ve road tripped through New Mexico several times now and this state never ceases to amaze me.

New Mexico has loads of ancient Aztec history, stunning geology, and super relaxing hot springs that are all worth checking out. But today, we will be focusing specifically on the Albuquerque to Santa Fe drive. Let’s dive in to the Albuquerque to Santa Fe distance, route options, and stops to see on the way.

The Albuquerque to Santa Fe Drive

First and foremost, if you do not live in New Mexico, you are likely flying into the Albuquerque Airport (also known as ABQ or the Albuquerque International Sunport) to start your trip.

While Santa Fe does have it’s own small regional airport, it is often much more expensive to fly into from most areas of the country. The easiest, cheapest, and most stress-free way to get there is to fly into ABQ.

This is exactly what I did on my most recent trip! I then picked up my rental car at the airport (I always get the best prices here ) and I was on my way.

While the fastest route will only take you about one hour to drive from Albuquerque to Santa Fe, you might want to consider the Scenic Route instead. Let’s go over your two options below.

Albuquerque to Santa Fe Route Options

If you are short on time, you will likely choose to follow the I-25. It is a straight shot and will take only one hour to drive.

However, anyone visiting as a tourist or who wants to see a bit more of New Mexico’s beauty should consider driving a route called the Turquoise Trail.

A Drive Along the Turquoise Trail

This incredibly scenic route winds you through 50 beautiful miles. You’ll encounter everything from old mining towns to panoramic viewpoints.

These are the places you can’t miss on your drive from Albuquerque to Santa Fe. Keep reading until the end because I’ve got a useful map at the end!

The Sandia Crest at sunset, a must see on your Albuquerque to Santa Fe Road Trip.

Sandia Crest

Just an hour outside of Albuquerque, the Sandia Crest is the highest point in the dramatic Sandia Mountains.

The simplest way to reach the summit is to drive up the winding road that leads to the top. However, for those feeling adventurous, there are a number of hiking trails that wind their way through alpine forests and offer stunning views of the Rio Grande Valley. At 10,678 feet, the Sandia Crest provides a welcome respite from the heat of the desert below.

In addition to its breathtaking views, the Sandia Crest is also home to a number of rare plants and animals. Pica oats and alpine forget-me-nots can be found blooming in the alpine meadows. Hikers may also spot elk or bighorn sheep grazing in the meadows.

Whether reached by car or by foot, the Sandia Crest is sure to impress.

The Golden Mining town is located in between Albuquerque and Santa Fe, in the heart of New Mexico. This quaint little town gets its name from the golden hue that blanketed the area when miners first arrived in search of gold.

Although there is no longer any gold to be found in the hills around Golden, the town has managed to hold onto its small-town charm. The streets are lined with independent shops, and residents take pride in their community spirit.

Visitors can explore the historic buildings, go for a hike in the hills, or simply enjoy a meal in one of the local cafes. Whether you’re looking for adventure or a chance to relax, Golden Mining town is the perfect place to spend a few days.

Madrid, New Mexico may be just a small dot on the map, but it has a lot to offer.

This former coal mining town is now home to a thriving art community. The town is home to a number of unique art galleries and shops, as well as a few restaurants and cafes serving New Mexican cuisine.

The town hosts a number of events throughout the year, particularly around the holidays. If you’re looking for a place to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life, Madrid is the place to go.

Los Cerrillos

Picture the quintessential “Wild West” and you are probably picturing Los Cerrillos!

This small town is just 30 minutes from Santa Fe, in New Mexico, so youve almost finished your road trip. Los Cerrillos is home to a number of attractions, including the Cerrillos Hills State Park and the Cerrillos ghost town site.

This is one of the oldest Spanish colonial settlements and used to feature 21 saloons and four hotels. Now, things are a bit more quiet, but its still a great place to stop.

Visitors can also enjoy hiking, biking, and horseback riding in the area. Whether you’re looking for a taste of the Old West or just want to get away from it all for awhile, Los Cerrillos is definitely worth a visit.

What is the Albuquerque to Santa Fe Driving Distance on the Turquoise Trail?

If you were to drive this route without spending extra time at these four sights, it would take just over 2.5 hours to drive from Albuquerque to Santa Fe. The total mileage is 112 miles.

Depending on how long you stop at each point, and whether you hike, bike, or stop for a meal, you can easily make this a full one day trip. In fact, I highly recommend doing so!

Top airline flying from Albuquerque to Santa Fe

The flight was canceled. Got rebooked to Chicago and when we arrived our luggage where to there. They were going to our original destination the day after. They would not deliver them to our house. We had to go pick them up.

Too many fees (but that seems to apply to all airlines nowadays)

Packed in like sardines, very uncomfortable. Sitting the aisle my shoulder was rammed into numerous times by rushing flight attendants. Also flight was very cold.

Your app is impossible to use. I couldn't load it. Then i couldn't open it. When i finally got both those things done -with much help -then i couldn't open the app to install a credit card. The upshot was 4 flights without access to food or drink. When i first tried to download united app some company called starlier opened instead and i would up signing up for some 49 dollar a month music service which i still have not been able to cancel.

Delayed a day due to snow storm. Was upgraded. That kind of made up for significant delays from FLL to COS with no compensation or acknowledgement.

It was delayed several hours which delayed our connection in Denver. Not happy.

Ok, but comfort was lacking as the seats were way to small

The plane was delayed 2 hours. The wifi did not work. The seat in first class was not comfortable because the bottom felt like it lost all of its padding. And I did not like when the flight attendant made me wait at my seat to use the bathroom and didn't tell me why. If there were too many people using the 1st Class bathroom, she should have told me to go in the back, coach bathrooms. I guess I have to feel fortunate that they found 2 local pilots to still fly the plane tonight after the original pilots ended up at an airport 60 miles away due to high winds.

The flight experience was very good! Especially the United Club!

Overall it was good. The flight was bumpy at times, but the pilot made us aware every time. As a result, no snacks/drinks were made available. Seats were tight but that’s okay as I had a window seat.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal officials are investigating a Southwest Airlines flight that veered off course and flew close to the air traffic control tower at LaGuardia Airport last month.

The Federal Aviation Administration said Thursday that the plane flew off course due to bad weather as it approached for landing at the busy New York City airport.

The plane flew as low as 300 feet before an air traffic controller – speaking in an unusually urgent tone – told the pilots to abandon their landing and climb to 2,000 feet, according to audio captured by LiveATC.net.

The controller said the plane was not lined up with the runway; it appeared to be east of the intended landing route.

“He was not going to land on the runway,” the controller said.

The flight was diverted to Baltimore, where the plane landed safely. After a brief stop, the plane flew back to New York, according to data from Flightradar24.com.

“The FAA is investigating and will determine if the aircraft flew over the tower at LaGuardia,” an agency spokesperson said. The National Transportation Safety Board said it was also investigating but did not plan to issue any immediate reports.

Dallas-based Southwest did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The March 23 incident on the flight from Nashville, Tennessee, was reported earlier by CBS News.

SFPD arrest suspects from Easter shooting

The Santa Fe Police Department yesterday announced the arrests of Santiago Prada, 34, of Santa Fe and Steven Sena, 32, of Albuquerque for their roles in a March 31 shooting on the 900 block of Verdinal Lane near Montano Street and Avenida Cristobal Colon. Police charged Prada with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and shooting at a dwelling or occupied building, and Sena with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and negligent use of a firearm. The charges stemmed from an incident occurring Sunday night: SFPD responded to a report of a large fight and shots fired at approximately 7:19 pm and, according to a news release, upon arrival a few minutes later, located a male victim who suffered injury from gunfire and a female victim believed to have been hit by a vehicle. At last reporting, both were in critical condition and taken to hospitals in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, respectively. Police said in addition to the shooting, a vehicle had crashed into a home on Verdinal Lane, striking a gas line, a situation quickly addressed by New Mexico Gas Company. Both Prada and Sena were booked yesterday morning into Santa Fe County Adult Detention Center, and will remain there until their initial appearances in court, neither of which have been scheduled yet, according to court records.

State Supreme Court rules against workers comp caps

The state’s limits on how long workers can receive compensation benefits after suffering mental impairment from a workplace injury are unconstitutional, the state Supreme Court ruled yesterday . As detailed in a news release , the state’s law has a schedule, ranging from seven to 200 weeks, for the maximum number of weeks workers can receive benefits for accidental injuries to body parts. Some injuries don’t receive coverage under the “scheduled” system and these “non-scheduled” injuries have compensation capped at 500 to 700 weeks. In the case of mental impairments resulting from a physical impairment, the benefit period is “tied to the duration of compensation for the original physical injury.” In the case before the court, special educator teacher Ana Lilia Cardenas injured her knee while working for Aztec Municipal Schools and suffered subsequent mental impairment due to the injury. She received 150 weeks of permanent partial disability benefits for her knee injury from a Workers Compensation Administration judge and appealed the decision, saying her mental impairment needed to be treated as a separate disability. The state Supreme Court unanimously upheld a Court of Appeals decision in Cardenas’ favor, which the school district and its insurer had asked the court to review. “Both mentally disabled workers and physically disabled workers are impaired in their capacities to perform work,” the opinion written by Justice Briana H. Zamora reads. “A mental disability compensable under the Act affects workers in the same way as a compensable physical disability does by preventing them from earning a wage because of an on-the-job accident. The idea that mentally disabled workers may be entitled to recover less compensation than physically disabled workers is contrary to the purposes of the Act, which guide our equal protection analysis.”

NMED seeks $577 million in federal pollution grants

As part of a multi-state effort in the Southwest to decarbonize 1,124 miles on Interstate 40, the state environment department yesterday submitted two grant applications to the US Environment Department. The application for a “Zero40″ corridor proposes eight clean transportation fueling centers along I-40 in New Mexico, Arizona, and Oklahoma, each including “heavy-duty charging stations and mobile hydrogen re-fueling stations for long haul freight.” New Mexico’s portion would be approximately $250,000, according to a news release, and include three location sites: one in Bernalillo and Sandoval Counties; one in the greater Gallup area; and one in Tucumcari. “New Mexico’s bold vision for clean transportation connects Western states and our local communities along the new ‘Zero40′ corridor,” Environment Secretary James Kenney says in a statement . “If funded, New Mexico will build the necessary transportation infrastructure for local tourism and regional commerce while reducing carbon emissions and other air pollutants one mile at a time.” A second grant application seeks funding for two state programs: the Clean Truck Incentive Program and the Efficient and Clean Operations for Schools, aka ECO Schools, program. The first program aims to fund charging or fueling infrastructure stations under the state’s new Clean Transportation Fuels Standard , which passed last month, and to complement the Advanced Clean Truck Rules adopted last year. The ECO Schools program is geared at providing electric school buses and charging plugs for schools serving low-income students and households. The EPA is expected to announce the grant awards in October.

In case you missed it, last Friday First Judicial District Court Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer ruled against an an emergency motion filed by former Rust armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, which had requested a new trial and release following a jury’s March 6 guilty verdict against Gutierrez-Reed for involuntary manslaughter.

The City of Santa Fe Police announced a 30-day spring blitz starting tomorrow to address dangerous driving. SFPD says it will target “high crash volume areas” within the city, which includes Airport Road, Saint Francis Drive and Cerrillos Road. “Auxiliary areas of concern” include Rodeo Road, St. Michael’s Drive, NM 599, Old Pecos Trail and Bishops Lodge Road. “Officers will conduct traffic enforcement related to speed, seatbelt use, cell phone use, racing, loud mufflers, and other traffic-related offenses. The efforts will focus on the public’s safety in these areas while operating a motor vehicle, riding a bicycle, and walking near roadways,” a news release says.

The Albuquerque Journal reports the state of New Mexico this summer intends to start putting together a uranium clean-up plans.

The School for Advanced Research offers a free online conversation at 2 pm today (register here ) between SAR President Michael F. Brown and 2023 JI Staley Prize recipient Hugh Raffles about his book, The Book of Unconformities , described by the New York Review of Books as a “mesmerizing, genre-melding work of history, memoir, anthropology, travel and time travel.” Raffles, professor and Anthropology Department chair at The New School , discusses the book in this also-mesmerizing video.

Sleeping outside

Condé Nast magazine puts forth its picks for every state’s best camping spot , choosing Three Rivers Campground in Lincoln National Forest as the top choice for New Mexico. “Not only can you stargaze while beating the heat here (the sites sit at a lofty 5,000 feet), visitors can also take a .5-mile trail to marvel at one of the largest petroglyph sites in the Southwest,” the magazine notes. If the story whets your appetite for New Mexico camping, check out Elizabeth Miller’s 2022 New Mexico Magazine guide to camping in all of the state parks (we are determined to make it to one of Hyde Park’s yurts one of these days). The state, by the way, recently postponed a public hearing that was supposed to take place yesterday on proposed increases to state park fees, in order to have “additional time to review and consider over 800 public comments and feedback” and in the face of opposition from House Republicans . Finally, for those looking to stare up at the star-filled night sky without camping, travel website Matador rounds up a list of 18 Airbnbs that fulfill that specific desire , including an Earthship in El Prado with a glass-roofed greenhouse in “one of the best stargazing locations in the US.”

Indigenous art ftw

New Mexico, naturally, figures heavily in TheCollector’s list of eight spots for exploring Indigenous art in the American Southwest, with the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture , the Institute of American Indian Arts Museum of Contemporary Native Arts and Taos Pueblo all receiving props. Regarding the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture, the story notes that its collection of 70,000 works by Native American artists makes it “one of the largest Indigenous Art collections in the world.” Hyperallergic , meanwhile, profiles rising Native American art star Rose B. Simpson (Santa Clara Pueblo), who tells the publication she didn’t actually want to become an artist, but did so “by default.” Her original dream? “I wanted to fly airplanes and helicopters,” she says. While Simpson ultimately received an MFA from Rhode Island School of Design in ceramics and an MFA in creative non-fiction from the Institute of American Indian Arts , outside school she “found profound ways of channeling her voice through artistic expression, creating work that speaks to her culture while living with what she describes as ‘postcolonial stress disorder,’” the story notes. This included collaborating with multiple artists in Albuquerque when she was an undergraduate at University of New Mexico. Working with others remains a tenet of her practice, she says. “I don’t do anything solo,” she tells Hyperallergic . “When I am doing something, I have this whole history behind me, I have all the unseen beings in the world that are moving around me.”

Following yesterday’s spring snow, the National Weather Service forecasts a mostly sunny day, with a high temperature near 54 degrees and north wind 5 to 15 mph.
