Dandenong Ranges Tours

Dandenong Ranges Tours are the perfect way to get out and about and enjoy one of Victoria’s most stunning regions.

Located just an hour east from the Melbourne CBD , the Dandenong Ranges is a lush, mountainous landscape that constitutes part of the iconic Great Dividing Range.

Dandenong Ranges Tours, Day Trip to Puffing Billy & National Park, VIC

One of the most popular ways to enjoy the Dandenong Ranges is to take a trip on the iconic Puffing Billy . This is Australia’s oldest and most famous steam engine. Having been in operation since 1900, the fully restored engine allows visitors to immerse themselves in the region’s rich history as the train huffs and puffs down the original railway track.

After Puffing Billy, take a scenic drive between the tall gum trees and vibrantly coloured ferns all the way to enchanting towns such as Olinda and Sassafras . The towns are home to some of the region’s most amazing art shops, making this the perfect location to get wonderful souvenirs to go home with. Art lovers will also be enamoured by the numerous antique shops that dot the towns.

A tour in the Dandenong Ranges is incomplete without visiting the Sky High Lookout at sky High Mount Dandenong. This lookout point provides stunning views of the city’s skyline, and visitors get to explore the lush gardens for a relaxed leg of the tour. The night views are particularly amazing as the city lights up at dusk.

Visit the Williams Rickets Sanctuary , a haven of beauty and serenity best known for its aboriginal sculptures tucked against an amazing backdrop of towering trees and magnificent ferns. This must-visit attraction is ideal for meditation and reflection, the very essence of the founder’s vision.

Other attractions worth checking out include the Dandenong Ranges National Park , the Mount Dandenong Arboretum , Grants Picnic Ground , the National Rhododendron Gardens and Olinda Falls .

8 Things to Do in the Dandenongs You Will Love

Michela Australia Destinations Melbourne 8

The Dandenong Ranges lie in East Melbourne, only an hour from Melbourne CBD. I discovered this region on a day trip from Melbourne, and I keep returning to revisit East Melbourne to explore more of the beautiful mountain region. Here, I share the best places and things to do in the Dandenong Ranges. The Dandenongs are a special place if you love to enjoy the outdoors near Melbourne.

Table of Contents

Places to visit and things to do on a Dandenong Ranges Day Trip

The Dandenongs stretch between Lilydale, located in the upper north, to Ferntree Gully in the southern part and from Belgrave southeast to Gembrook .

It is not possible to tour the entire Dandenongs on a one-day trip, so if your time frame is limited, this list of places will help you choose what to explore on your Melbourne Itinerary. If you ask Melburnians about their picks for visiting the Dandenong Ranges, the first thing that they would probably say is the 1000 Steps walk and the Puffing Billy Train. But there are many more places worth seeing, like the Alfred Nicholas Gardens , the Sherbrooke National Park , The Botanical Gardens and more.

No, let’s take a closer look at all things to tick off your Dandenong Ranges bucket list.

8 Things to Do in the Dandenongs for Nature Lovers

All these places are about one hour from the city, and the best way to explore this area is to go on day trips from Melbourne by car . Some of the sites can be visited by public transport too.

Go on a Puffing Billy Train Ride

Puffing Billy is the most popular heritage steam train in Australia. It is an old steam train that rides on the original mountain track for 25 km. The whole circuit takes nearly 4 hours, but you can get on and off where you want to. I went on the Puffing Billy ride from Lake Emerald to Gembrook. It takes 45 minutes to go one way.

Despite the cold winter temps – 6°C -, I enjoyed sitting in the open carriage, dangling my legs over the side, leaning out and taking as many photographs as possible of the fantastic mountain landscape. The train also offers first-class luxury dining and special events, as well as various kinds of functions. This is one of the nicest spots and the funniest things you can’t miss.

Book the 👉 Puffing Billy Train Tour from Melbourne

Stop at Gembrook

Gembrook is a lovely small village with Sunday markets and charming coffee shops. Riding on the Puffing Billy train isn’t cheap; a return ticket from Lake Emerald to Gembrook will cost about 49 dollars. Prices vary depending on the train route you choose. This Puffing Billy route offers more things to do along the way.

Visit Lake Emerald

Lake Emerald Park is a little jewel in the Dandenongs. From Fern Tree Gully, it’s a 20-minute drive; from the city, it’s 45 minutes. The place is popular for families with kids and tourists who flock here to walk around the lake. A paddleboat ride is a must, but I would also recommend the walking tracks starting from the lake.

Book Now Tickets for Your Dandenong Ranges Day Trip

There are picnic and BBQ facilities and also an outdoor swimming pool. The area is very photogenic, so if you love photography, this is a great spot and one of the best places to visit in the Dandenongs. If you are visiting on the third Sunday of the month, you cannot miss out on the Sunday Market, where various stalls are sold by local farmers and artisans selling their fresh produce and regional products.

Walk the 1000 Steps Kokoda Memorial Track

The 1000 Steps Walk in the Dandenongs Ranges is one of the most popular spots of the Dandenongs. Locals love it. Among outdoor and fitness lovers, it is one of the top landmarks in Melbourne’s surroundings for jogging and exercise in nature.

This 3 km walking trail was initially created in 1900 by soldiers who fought on the real Kokoda Trail in Papua Guinea. It was initially made with the trunk of tree ferns, concrete and wooden steps, then replaced. The track is steep, but anyone with a reasonable fitness level can walk up the hill.

Learn more about my adventure hiking solo 1000 Steps .

Once I reached the top, I returned through the Lyrebird Track, parallel to the  1000 steps. The vegetation is impressive; you will find yourself in the fern gully, surrounded by different tree ferns and manna gum trees. To walk the 1000-step track, you need 1 hour.

Be prepared for crowds of people flocking here from Melbourne and the suburbs. Parking your car can be a struggle. Avoid weekends and the busiest time of the day, which is the morning.

Enjoy The Sherbrooke Falls Walk

The Sherbrooke Falls Walk is another excellent and easy walk you can do in one hour, not far from the 1000 steps trail. Start your walk from the Sherbrooke Picnic Ground and walk through the beautiful forest to marvel at the tallest flowering Eucalyptus in the world, the Mountain Ash.

I happened to be there just after the rain, and the smell of the wet hardwood was so fresh and intense. In the Mountain ash forest, you can spot swamp wallabies, wombats, and brush-tailed possums as the perfect habitat for lyrebirds. There are good chances to see and hear these fantastic birds mimicking other birds’ singing.

Don’t skip on SkyHigh Mount Dandenong

This is probably the most popular place in the Dandenong Ranges. I recommend checking it out on a clear day. It is the highest point in the Dandenongs, and the view from the lookout is superb. You can enjoy Melbourne from a distance and much of Port Phillip Bay from the lookout.

Some of the things you can do there are take a stroll through the beautiful gardens, walk under dense eucalypts, sit at the restaurant, relax in the picnic area, have fun at the SkyHigh Maze, taking selfies at the Giant’s Chairs. An entry fee of 6 dollars per car is worth paying on a sunny day and sunset.

Soak in the magic of William Ricketts Sanctuary

The William Ricketts Sanctuary is on its way to SkyHigh Mount Dandenong . I highly recommend it as this is a unique site, with its striking sculptures carved into rocks representing the aboriginal culture and the artwork’s stunning, meaningful place. There is a small entry fee worth it.

On your way back, another great thing to do is stop at Olinda village, visit the Botanical Gardens and have tea at the famous Sassafras Cafe , a heritage tea house with excellent cakes and breakfasts.

Have fun at Grants Picnic Ground on Sherbrook

Another fun thing to do in the Dandenongs is bird feeding at the Grants Picnic Ground . It is a unique experience. I used to think of cockatoos as lovely birds, but they are wild animals, big and heavy birds with spiky claws in reality. I got scratches on my arms, and when you have a few cockatoos landing on your shoulders or arms, it’s easy to lose balance.

The entry fee is 4 dollars; you get a plate with a seed package to feed the birds within a designated area. If you like birds, go on the walking trails in the Sherbrook Forest near the Grants Picnic Ground Cafe; it’s the best way to see more birdlife.

8. Take a stroll at the Alfred Nicholas Memorial Gardens

When you drive back from Sherbrooke National Park , make sure you don’t miss the parking on the left-hand side and the accessible entrance to these beautiful and picturesque gardens. They have—I dare say—the most attractive ornamental lake I have seen in Australia. The Alfred Nicholas Gardens are spread on two levels and offer a nice walk through native and exotic flowering shrubs and trees.

The most iconic place is the ornamental lake with the Boathouse. It is a tranquil and romantic place, ideal for photographing and enjoying a kaleidoscope of colours. Furthermore, this is the right spot to see birds like Rosella and King Parrots and hear the laughing Kookaburra in the treetops. There are many gardens in the Dandenongs, but I think this place is unique and worth checking out.

How To Get to The Dandenongs from Melbourne

The best way to organise your day trips from Melbourne is to hire a car , public transport, or a combination of both. I prefer self-driving. While trains and buses take you to the main destinations, you need a vehicle to make the most of this region. A guided tour may be the best option if you are on a tight schedule or want to sit back and relax.

How to plan an extended trip to the Dandenong Ranges

These are my picks for a Dandenongs itinerary from Melbourne . While you can combine a trip to these destinations with a visit to the nearby Yarra Valley, Healesville Sanctuary, and East of Melbourne, you can also visit all these top places on day trips from Melbourne by car . The Dandenong Ranges is a stunning region of Melbourne; I highly recommend checking it out. It makes it an excellent destination for both a solo traveller and with family. There are many easy road trips and fun things to do in and around Melbourne .

Another place that is very popular to visit and must do is a visit to Grants Picnic Ground, in which for a small fee you can feed sulphar crested cockatoos by hand the birds will land on your shoulders and head to. Get to the seed, the birds are quite heavy when you get a couple of them on the dish, just remember they are wild birds but they do love a free feed. Grants Picnic ground also offers a number number of forest walks. You can incorporate this adventure with a number of other sites including , puffing billy, Alfred Nichols gardens, Sherbrooke forest, or one of the many tea rooms scattered throughout the hills

Rocky Travel August 6, 2016 @ 2:27 pm

Thanks for adding the Grants Picnic Ground. I will add this place to the list. Now I remember having been there too, last year. It slipped my mind, haha. It was fun feeding the birds, and yes, couldn’t believe how big and heavy these birds are. When they land on your shoulder to grab the food, you will know!

Justin August 10, 2016 @ 3:14 pm

Wow that looks like a gorgeous area! I’d kill to be able to take a trip out there (I’m in the states) to do some photography.

The most iconic place is the ornamental lake with the Boathouse, a very tranquil and romantic place. These are all beautiful photo. Thanks for sharing your information.

Kate Cashin April 11, 2022 @ 11:01 am

If you like Alfred Nicholas Gardens be sure to check out Pirianda Gardens and George Tindale Gardens on future visits. They are far less well known and real gems.

Guide to the Dandenong Ranges

The stunning gardens, cool forests and quaint townships of the Dandenong Ranges are an easy day trip from Melbourne.

Link Copied!

By Sue Gough Henly

The Dandenong Ranges are the cool, green lungs of  Melbourne . Explore the fern glades and soaring forests of mountain ash (the world's tallest flowering trees) by car, on foot or in a historic steam train. Wander through some of Australia's finest mature gardens and enjoy great country fare in pretty villages and rustic farm cafes.

  • Ride the historic Puffing Billy Steam Train through forests and fern gullies
  • Explore some of Australia's finest gardens
  • Drive the scenic, winding Mount Dandenong Tourist Road and explore pretty villages

How to get there

By car from  Melbourne  it takes about an hour to get to the Dandenong Ranges via the M1 freeway, Ferntree Gully Road and the Burwood Highway. The Dandenong Ranges are also accessible on the  V-Line train service  from Melbourne. There are many options for day tours and accommodation for longer stays.

Eat at a top Melbourne chef's country café and bakery

Enjoy a hearty country breakfast or long lunch at the rustic-chic  Piggery Café  and Burnham Bakery, located in the restored stables and piggery of the historic Burnham Beeches estate in Sherbrooke. Outside tables overlook lawn bowls, croquet and bocce pitches popular with guests. Further afield are extensive vegetable gardens, a 500-tree trufferie and an enclosure for emus that supply eggs for the café. This is stage one of an ambitious project by Melbourne star chef Shannon Bennett, who plans to add Australia's longest chicken run, a 16-cow automated dairy plus a steakhouse, microbrewery and luxury retreat all designed according to sustainable principles.

Discover the Dandenong Ranges' colourful cool climate gardens

The  Dandenong Ranges  are home to many established  cool climate gardens  that are particularly spectacular in  spring  and  autumn . Wander amid huge rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias and daffodils in the  National Rhododendron Gardens  and enjoy an ornamental lake surrounded by mountain ash, gingko, maple and liquid amber trees at the  Alfred Nicholas Memorial Gardens . Ponder Aboriginal spirituality as you discover the sculptures of Aboriginal people tucked among the ferns of the tranquil William Ricketts Sanctuary . Admire the kaleidoscope of colour at the Tesselaar Tulip Festival  (early September to early October) and check out the 20 English “garden rooms” of  Cloudehill Nursery and Gardens . You'll find a patchwork of 150 species of native and exotic trees at the  RJ Hamer Arboretum , and kids will love the hedge maze at  Sky High Mount Dandenong , which also has fabulous views over Melbourne.

Go for a ride on the Puffing Billy steam train

Breathe in the cool mountain air through the open-sided carriages of one of the world's finest preserved steam railways as it wends its way for 24 kilometres (15 miles) through the tall mountain ash forests and fern gullies of the Dandenong Ranges.  Puffing Billy  trundles along timber bridges, stops at historic, small-town railway stations and offers views of farmland all the way to  Port Phillip Bay . You can even dangle your legs over the side of the open carriages (kids love it). There are also special train journeys including lunch and dinner in fully enclosed, first-class dining carriages.

The rich soils of the Dandenong ranges are perfect for growing fruit. You can join in the fun by going fruit picking in season at  Cherryhill Orchards ,  Blue Hills Berries and Cherries , and  Kookaberry Berry Farm . Explore pretty villages

Drive the winding 30-kilometre (19-mile) Mount Dandenong Tourist Road through soaring mountain ash forests and leafy fern glades, stopping to explore the pretty villages of  Olinda ,  Sassafras  and  Belgrave . Maybe it's the cool mountain air, but there's a fascination with Devonshire teas in these parts. In Sassafras,  Miss Marple's Tearoom  is a standout and  Tealeaves  sells some of the finest loose-leaf teas in Australia. Also in Sassafras, kids will love the toys and puppets at  Geppetto's Workshop . In Olinda, check out carefully curated homewares and clothing at  Mangana .

  • What's Included

Exploring the Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden

The Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden is Victoria’s premier cool-climate garden. With breathtaking views over the Yarra Valley, the garden features important collections of rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias and more, in a setting of native and exotic trees. Seasonal changes ensure the garden is a year-round delight.

The Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden is home to a staggering 15,000 rhododendrons, 12,000 azaleas, 3,000 camellias and 250,000 daffodils clothed in colour in spring and autumn. The garden houses Australia’s largest collection of Australian and overseas raised hybrids of rhododendrons that cannot be replaced, re-bred or re-imported.

Cloudehill Gardens: A Fusion of Styles and History

Not many have the chance to make a garden out of an old flower farm. Cloudehill’s design derives from Italian renaissance gardens, English arts and crafts gardens, and from contemporary meadow gardening. Deep volcanic soil and moist mild weather allow plants to achieve majestic proportions. The two magnificent weeping maples at the heart of the gardens are just stunning. These glorious trees are historic, they came from Japan in 1928. With so many ‘garden rooms’ you will find a few at their peak no-matter the time of year.

Tranquil Retreat of Alfred Nicholas Gardens and Unique Flora at George Tindale Memorial Garden

The Alfred Nicholas Gardens are a perfect scenic haven, with rock walls, a picturesque lake, a boathouse and areas for picnicking. The foliage and flowers are the stars of the show, revealing a kaleidoscope of colour in vibrant bloom year-round, from azaleas and orchids to ferns and maple leaves, beneath a canopy of towering mountain ash trees.

The George Tindale Memorial Garden contains a number of plants rarely found in cultivation, which are thriving in the acidic soils, cool temperate climate and shaded conditions found in the Dandenong Ranges. Extensive collections of magnolias, rhododendrons, camellias, azaleas and hydrangeas will delight garden enthusiasts.

The gardens offer something new with each season – a myriad of flowers in spring; hydrangeas and lilliums in summer; a canopy of gold, red, orange and burgundy in Autumn and the flowers of the Lenten Rose or Hellebore beneath flowering shrubs in winter.

Pirianda Gardens: A Labor of Love and Botanical Wonder

Formerly the private 23-acre garden and home of Harvey and Gillian Ansell, purchased in 1959, the Pirianda Gardens were donated to the Victorian Government in 1977 and then managed by Parks Victoria since 1995.

Created on a steep hillside over a number of years, paths interlink and meander through exotic tree plantings and down into a beautiful fern gully, dominated by blackwoods and tree ferns. 500 metres or so of fabulous stone walls built between the 1960s and early 1980s, line some of the paths and steps.

During overseas holidays, the Ansell’s would seek new and unusual plants to import for their garden, enriching the experience of day tours from Melbourne to Dandenong Ranges. Twenty-eight different types of Maple and thirteen varieties of Birch create a beautiful autumnal display, while Rhododendrons and many other flowering plants welcome in the spring, making the gardens an all-year-round pleasure to visit.

The Best Things To Do In The Dandenong Ranges, 2024 Edition

By Rick Stephens

13th Feb 2024

One of the best things to do in the Dandenong Ranges is visit the Paradise Valley hotel.

There’s a certain magic in b-lining up Mount Dandenong Tourist Road. Sure, the weekend warriors lining up to take on the 1000 steps can be disconcerting, though once they begin to dissipate as you continue to climb, you’ll immediately notice the cooler temperature, age-old ferns giving the towering gums a run for their money along with the calming sounds of the mountain. This divine forest escape also happens to be barely an hour out of town—there are plenty of things to do in the Dandenong Ranges, you just need to know where to look.

Avoid the tourist traps and follow this ultimate itinerary for a day in the Dandenong Ranges.

Stop One: Burnham Beeches

Okay, we’ll level with you, this one's on many a 'things to do Dandenong Ranges' itinerary, so it gets busy, but the grounds are so damn bucolic and charming it’s worthy of a mention. Your best bet is to get there in the AM take in the serenity, and descend down into the gardens past the sprawling art deco mansion—once the holiday home of the inventor of Aspirin—before taking off to stop two.

It's also worth noting, that soon, Burnham Beeches will become a boutique Six Senses retreat hotel . So if you're hoping to sight the space in its current form, best get there soon.

Visit the serene Burnham Beeches in the Dandenong Ranges.

Stop Two: Olinda Falls And Dandenong Ranges Botanic Gardens

Stretch your legs at Olinda Falls in the Dandenong Ranges. Surrounded by gumtree varietals and plenty of ferns, this oft-overlooked waterfall steeps down into one of the many troughs of Mount Dandenong.

Take it all in from the viewing platform at the top or get in some cardio and follow the 500m trail alongside falls to the bottom—just keep in mind you have to make your way back up.

The immaculately kept Dandenong Ranges Botanic Gardens is just a few minutes up the road and worth a look-in for their rhododendron gardens and ornamental lake alone. Two of the most underrated things to do, but also two of the best things to do in the Dandenong Ranges.

A gushing waterfall between old ferns, one of the best things to do in the Dandenong Ranges.

Stop Three: Micawber Tavern

If you search 'things to do Dandenong Ranges', this spot might slip under the radar. Micawber Tavern is an age-old pub that has about 37 chicken parmigiana variations on the menu, and all of them slap.

The old-world charm in the decor is about as authentic as the locals that show up in their mud-clad utes—join them for a pint of Guinness by the bar or head outside and smash down that parma by the charming creek and ferns out the back.

Stop Four: Emerald Lake Park

Head up and over the Dandenong Ranges and you’ll find yourself in a town called Emerald, a little blip on the mountain that's primed with things to do for the day-tripper in us all.

At Emerald Lake Park, you’ve got not one, but two lakes, grassy patches everywhere, plenty of barbecues and even two-seater paddleboats should you be trying to charm that special someone.

As you drive into this gorgeous Dandenong Ranges park, you’ll see the main lake which acts as somewhat of a tourist cache. So park that car, and b-line east for the secondary lake called Lake Nobelius.

The track gets a little muddy, but a few minutes of trudging will be well worth the scenery that you’ll probably have all to yourself. For those with time on their hands, take a few of the trails into the ferns until you find the hidden wishing well.

A charming lake with an old wooden bridge running over it in the Dandenong Ranges, considered one of the best things to do in the region.

Stop Five: The Independent

You’ll most likely be toward the end of your day after a meander around Emerald Lake, but those in no rush to return to the city should make tracks to the charming township of Gembrook just outside the Dandenong Ranges, for a feed at regional fine-diner The Independent.

Once a country motor garage, Mauro Callegari’s modern Argentinian restaurant is sure to meet the lofty standards of any Melburnian on their single-day sojourn out of town. Make sure you book in here .

Stop Six: Paradise Valley Hotel

Anyone who truly wants to push the boat out, and still looking for things to do in the Dandenong Ranges, should swing by the iconic Paradise Valley Hotel for a pint with the locals.

Should you still be peckish, or if you're after a more casual dinner, Paradise Valley serves up one helluva parma. Once locals-only knowledge, PV's chicken parmigiana took out gold for the best in the state last year.

Looking for things to do in the Dandenong Ranges? Try Victoria's best parma, covered in cheese and red sauce, at Paradise Valley Hotel.

Road Trip Through the Dandenongs – A Great Melbourne Day Trip

by Sharyn McCullum | Last updated Jun 18, 2023 | Discover Australia Now , Melbourne , Road Trips , Victoria | 18 comments

Mount Dandenong in the Distance from the Yarra Valley.

An Australian bucket list item on everyone’s visit to Melbourne is a day trip drive through the Dandenongs. Why? Well it is a spectacular trip that has plenty to see and do for everyone in the family, from kids to adults. So if you are after discovering some great hikes, boutique shops and quaint cafes topped with spectacular views over Melbourne, Port Phillip Bay to Mount Macedon, then you definitely need to take a road trip through the Dandenongs.

Table of Contents

Some Terminology First

You will hear different terms when referring to this part of outer eastern Melbourne. Here’s a quick explanation so you don’t get confused what is what when working out your visit to the Dandenongs.

  • The Dandenongs – a group of small hills and mountains left behind by a volcanic eruption. They form the beginning of the Great Dividing Range which is along most of the East Coast of Australia. And they are at the base of Melbourne’s famed Yarra Valley wine region .
  • Mount Dandenong – often referred to as Mount D by the locals is the largest mountain in the Dandenongs.
  • Dandenong Ranges National Park – Most of the Dandenongs are covered by the Dandenong Ranges National Park.
  • Mount Dandenong – small suburb with a village on Mount Dandenong.
  • Mount Dandenong Tourist Road (C415) – the tourist road through the Dandenongs.

Where are the Dandenongs?

The Dandenongs are 35km (22 miles) East from Melbourne’s CBD and Mount Dandenong, the highest point of the Dandenongs stands some 633 metres (2077 feet) above sea-level. You cannot miss it as you drive towards it with its TV and radio transmission towers soaring above it. In fact, you may think you are in France! A friend’s daughter once had a friend over and while driving saw the transmission towers and asked ‘is that the Eiffel Tower?’ To which was explained they are the TV and radio transmission towers for Melbourne sitting on top of Mount Dandenong. The friend was a little disappointed that France wasn’t as close as first thought!

How to Get to Mount Dandenong from Melbourne

There are bus services that will take you to around the mountain but you will need to adhere to its timetable. You have two options:

  • Catch a train to Croydon Train Station then take Bus No. 688 taking you to Kalorama, Mount Dandenong, Olinda, Sassafras, Ferny Creek and to Upper Ferntree Gully.
  • Catch a train to Belgrave Train Station for Puffing Billing Train Station. Take bus number 694 to Sherbrooke, Kallista, Sassafras and Olinda.

I think it is best to visit Mount Dandenong by car because you will have more flexibility to go wherever you want without relying on the buses. If you don’t have a car then you can rent one. Get pricing and availability here .

Or you could go on an organised day tour. Check them out here .

When is the best time to visit the Dandenongs

Anytime is a good time to visit the Dandenongs as it aint going nowhere. However, if you are going for the spectacular views, go on a clear day so you get to see the view. A clear day can be in any season however, during summer, it can be very hot and you need to be aware of any bushfire restrictions. And then in winter, because the mountain is high, it can get snow and sleet with a bitter wind.

What to See and Do in the Dandenongs

Get great views at skyhigh mount dandenong.

The premier tourist attraction in the Dandenongs is SkyHigh Mount Dandenong which is privately leased land from Parks Victoria. The entrance fee of $10 covers its maintenance. Here you will find the Sky High Restaurant, a cafe, picnic areas with BBQs and great English gardens to stroll through and for the kids to run around in. There is also a maze to make your way through, a wishing well and tree, Percy Possum’s House and the Giant’s Chair. But the piece de resistance is the view. On a beautiful clear day you can see across Melbourne’s eastern suburbs over to Port Phillip Bay and beyond to the Macedon Ranges. You will see much of this view in the replica of Arthur Streeton’s ‘Storm over Macedon’ painting located on the terrace.

You can spend a few hours here at SkyHigh Mount Dandenong and it is well worth it!

Go on a Walk through the Dandenongs

As Mount Dandenong belongs in the Dandenong Ranges National Park, you can image it has many trees, lush fern gullies, bushwalking tracks, picnic areas and waterfalls. In fact, Mount Dandenong has some 32 wonderful walks to undertake through different terrains. They vary in length from under 1km to about 20km and range from easy to moderate to hard. They all vary and some are kid-friendly, pet-friendly and or wheelchair friendly.

The most popular is the 1000 Steps which is a memorial to the Kokoda Trail in PNG. One of my favourites is the Olinda Falls Walking Track as I am treated to a fabulous waterfall to take a break from walking at. Another good one is to Burkes Lookout for great views over Melbourne. It is also one of the most popular places people go on New Year’s Eve to watch the fireworks over Melbourne. For more walks check out Explore the Dandenongs .

Please note: Some of the walking tracks are still closed due to storms that hit Mount Dandenong in June 2021.

Enjoy a meal in one of the Quaint Towns

If you didn’t bring a picnic lunch or had a meal at SkyHigh Mount Dandenong then there are a number of options. The small townships and villages of Olinda, Mount Dandenong and Sassafras on Mount D have some great coffee shops and restaurants to enjoy a meal. I particularly like the pies from the Olinda Pie Shop. There are also some picnic spots where you can cook a BBQ or enjoy food you brought from home. There was a Mount D institution – the Cuckoo Restaurant. This was a German-themed restaurant in Olinda that not only had great food but great German entertainment too. Unfortunately, the pandemic was not kind to the Cuckoo Restaurant and it closed.

Enjoying a coffee at Sassafras Cafe.

Plenty of cute coffee shops to enjoy a cuppa

William Rickets Sanctuary

William Rickets Sanctuary is named after the talented Australian potter of the same name who also lived and worked at Mount Dandenong from 1934 until his death in 1993. He spent some 50 years creating the 92 ceramic sculptures of animals and people depicting the Aboriginal Dreamtime. You can visit this beautiful and tranquil place where you can walk along a ferny pathway amongst these mystical sculptures. Kids of all ages love it!

Mount Dandenong Arboretum

The Mount Dandenong Arboretum is an area where you will find 16 hectares of deciduous trees and conifers. Arboretum is a Latin word meaning a place for trees, and you will see many trees here. Go for a walk through them or simply enjoy a picnic amongst them.

Kalorama Recreational Reserve

The Kalorama Recreational Reserve is a large sporting field surrounded by tall, and I mean tall trees. The sporting field is in use during the year with both football in winter and cricket in summer. I can attest to this as my son played cricket here one Friday evening. There is also a playground, skate park and it is home to the Karwarra Australian Plant Garden. You can go on a walk here through the trees that is only 2km in length, but is quite steep.

Puffing Billy Railway

Puffing Billy Steam Train

Puffing Billy Steam Train is fun for everyone

Further afield in the Dandenongs out at Belgrave is the famous Puffing Billy Railway . Most Melburnians have taken a ride on this special steam train whether it be for a school excursion or weekend treat. It is a time-honoured tradition for passengers to sit on the carriage sills while Puffing Billy chugs through rolling hills, Sherbrooke Forest with its native ‘Mountain Ash’ trees, open farmland and across the iconic Trestle Bridge. Such a cool experience for all ages. I think I squealed in delight more than my kids!

Suggested Touring Routes through the Dandenongs

There are three roads that take you to the Dandenongs from Melbourne and others from the other side of the mountain range. Here are my suggested touring routes to make the most of your time touring around Mount Dandenong and the Dandenong Ranges.

Route 1 : Follow Maroondah Highway and turn right onto the Mount Dandenong Tourist Road (C415). Stopping at:

  • Kalorama Bowl (on the right)
  • SkyHigh Mount Dandenong
  • 1000 Steps Trek
  • Ferntree Gully then back along Burwood Highway to Melbourne.
  • Or turn left and follow (C412) to Belgrave for Puffing Billy Railway.

Route 2 : Follow Burwood Highway to Ferntree Gully. Vear left onto Mount Dandenong Tourist Road (C415). Stopping at:

  • Kalorama Bowl (on the left)
  • Continue along tourist road and follow back to Maroondah Highway.

Route 3 : Follow Burwood Highway to Ferntree Gully. Vear right and follow road (C412) to:

  • Belgrave for Puffing Billy Railway
  • Follow further for towns such as Emerald or return and follow Route 2. Or from Belgrave follow (C404) to Kallista, to Olinda and SkyHigh Mount Dandenong.

I would love to experience how it feels like riding on a steam train. I am sure it feels like a different era altogether

It is. It is louder and seats are older and harder. I love how you can open the windows and hang out – you cannot do that nowadays!

Lisa

I grew up and spent most of my life in Victoria, but have never been on the iconic Puffing Billy! Can you believe it?!

Yes. I can believe it, you aren’t alone. We often don’t visit what is on our own doorstep – we like to explore further. I saw Puffing Billy because I took my kids when little as they loved Thomas the Tank Engine and we got to se Puffing Billy’s Fat Controller.

simplyjolayne

The Dandenongs would be a fun destination for a weekend getaway. The area looks so cool for exploring and hiking.

The Dandenongs are a great day or weekend trip and the hiking is amazing.

Terri

I wish I took this field trip to the mountains when I visited Melbourne. What incredible views! Great pics.

Yes, fabulous views from the top of Mount Dandenong – as long as its a clear day.

Lovely part of the world, isn’t it? I definitely gotta get out and explore more this year!

The Dandenongs are such a beautiful part of the world. I hope you can get back there.

Elyse

This is such a great guide, I think the Dandenongs is one of the most beautiful parts of Victoria. And how awesome is puffing Billy, I haven’t been in years ????

Yes, I agree, the Dandenongs are a beautiful part of Victoria. I hope you can get back there soon.

Linnea Jordan

I had no idea what Dandenongs were! So interesting!

Glad I could explain what the Dandenongs are.

What a great destination! I’d love to go hiking here!

Mount Dandenong has many hikes – the 1000 steps is my favourite. I hope you get to hike there one day!

Yvonne

I really found the explanation of terminology at the beginning of the post really helpful! Also, the Puffing Billy Railway looks like SO much fun! To ride on a train with your feet dangling off the side of the edge – wow!

Good to hear that, it can be confusing. And Puffing Billy Railway is so much fun – I hope you can ride it one day.

We were able to see wild platypuses, as well as stunning views along the coast on the Great Ocean Road. The additional side trip (extra add on) to Wildlife Wonders, at the recommendation of our guide, was well worth it and a highlight of our entire trip to Australia. We had originally signed on a group trip, but the other couple cancelled so they gave us a private trip rather than cancel us.
