Whitey Morgan and the 78's anticipated new album, self-produced by Morgan, was recorded in the Neve Room at famed Sonic Ranch Studios in Tornillo, Texas. Featured on the record are collaborations with acclaimed songwriters Travis Meadows and Ward Davis plus a cover of ZZ Top's "Just Got Paid." Alongside Morgan, the 78's consist of Brett Robinson (pedal steel guitar), Joey Spina (guitar), Alex Lyon (bass) and Eric Savage (drums).

Of the recording, Morgan shares, "It's not like my vision happened overnight. I've been chipping away at it forever. It's slowly evolving and it's going in a little bit different direction. It's not so straightforward anymore. This record definitely has a wider path, it's broader, but it still sounds like a Whitey Morgan record." With grandparents from Tennessee and Kentucky and hometown roots in Flint, Michigan, Morgan's family geography has factored into his approach to music.

In a career spanning 15 years, Morgan has released five studio albums and a live recording from his hometown of Flint, Michigan. Additionally, he has toured relentlessly averaging over 125 shows annually. Rolling Stone has described him as a "Waylon Jennings acolyte.. modern day outlaw [with a] hard hitting blue-collar brand of music" while NPR Music hailed, "Staying close to the sound and subject matter of classic outlaw artists like Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard and David Allan Coe, Morgan is poised to lead this hand-worn brand of country to the next generation." His most recent LP, Sonic Ranch (2015), was released to critical acclaim and praised by Detroit Free Press as, "a bold well-crafted album that doesn't forsake the gritty undercurrent running through Morgan's stuff."

Van Halen Makes History: ‘78 Tour Tidbits…& Other Big U.S. News

March 5, 2018 —by Joseph M. Monks Leave a Comment

1978-10-10-DLR-birthday-WBR

Happy Birthday! David Lee Roth, lead singer of Van Halen, expresses delight at a surprise birthday party given him after the group’s European opening concert in Hamburg. Stefan Michel, left, product manager U.S. repertoire for WEA musik, and Michael Anthony, the group’s bass player, share the fun.

Just how big was Van Halen’s first album ? Warner Bros. had the band booked to kick off a worldwide tour on March 3, 1978, just three weeks after the album was released. Primarily as a supporting act for big hitters like Journey and Black Sabbath, the foursome performed 174 shows over ten months.  Who’s still saving their ’78 Sabbath/Van Halen black tour shirt? Send us pics!

All told, Van Halen played 124 shows in the US, two in Canada, nine in Japan and 39 in Europe (as the headliner in Japan and Europe). Pretty awesome stuff, but we can’t help but point out some interesting tidbits about the band as well as big headlines during the 1978 tour. Take a look…

Feb 5th-7th: The monstrous Blizzard of ’78 is one of the country’s worst natural disasters, burying the Northeast and killing over 100 people while piling up snow and over half a billion dollars in damage. The storm dropped more than 27 inches of snow on Boston and many other cities in its path.  (Can you imagine waiting outside a record store in those temperatures on the 10th, when VAN HALEN finally hit the shelves?)

Picture of The Blizzard of 1978

Also in February, the first computer BBS (Bulletin Board Service) is created. Who’s your daddy, VHND!?!

March 3rd: Van Halen 1978 tour begins, opening for Journey at the Aragon Ballroom in bassist Michael Anthony’s hometown, Chicago, Illinois. Not a bad way to make your return, eh?

March 7th: After getting bumped off the bill at the Madison Orpheum Theatre because the stage couldn’t accommodate the equipment of three bands, Van Halen wound up playing a club gig at the Shuffle Inn. Following the show, the band trashed the 7th floor of the Sheraton Inn, destroying furniture, TVs and even toilet seats. Telephones were tossed out windows, and Alex Van Halen glued other guests’ doorknobs or put Vaseline on knobs so people couldn’t turn them. When confronted about the damage, they blamed it all on Journey. The liner notes of Van Halen II, however,  would give a special thanks to the hotel. (W ant to know more about all the mayhem that ensued that week? Read this exclusive account. )

March 14th: Van Halen invades Canada, blistering Massey Hall in Toronto, Canada. (Were you there for the first VH appearance North of the Border? (Got pics? We’d love to share some!)

April 2nd: CBS launches the nighttime soap DALLAS , which goes on to be a modest hit for the network. We still think it should have hired Van Halen to do a JR’s Cryin’ opening theme.

April 7th: President Jimmy Carter declares, “I am not an atomic punk,” (well, perhaps not in those exact words), and decides to suspend production of the neutron bomb.

May 5th: Pete Rose gets his 3,000th hit, putting him only 2,998 ahead of Van Halen, who are busy rocking the Dutch at the Delft Civic Auditorium in the Netherlands.

May 8th: Alex spends his 25th birthday on stage at the Markthalle Convention Center in Hamburg, Germany, just three days after he and brother Eddie celebrate a triumphant Netherlands homecoming – being that both founding members were born there. We suspect some ladies in Delft were perhaps allowed to celebrate with the hometown heroes after their concert at the Civic Auditorium. Eddie was in his real-life birthplace the following evening, when the band played to a standing room only crowd at Club Paradiso in Amsterdam.

Markthalle Convention Center in Hamburg, Germany

May 12th: Van Halen opens for Black Sabbath on their Never Say Die tour,  tearing the roof off of the Theatre Mogador in Paris, France.

May 20th: Mavis Hutchinson becomes the first woman to run across the United States. No word from Mavis’ family if “Runnin With the Devil” was on her playlist.

June 1st: Van Halen roars into the Hammersmith Odeon in London, England. We’ve never confirmed if the Queen was there or not. Just a “No comment.”

June 12th: GREASE makes a couple of bucks in theatres for Paramount Pictures, but alas, the studio fails to include any VH on the soundtrack. Probably why it was only the No. 2 selling album for the year.

June 15th: Not quite as thunderous as Godzilla, Van Halen takes Japan, including an appearance on Japanese television .

June 20th: Michael had an off day on his birthday in 1978 as the band traveled to play the Nakano Sun Plaza Hall in Tokyo on the 21st. (We suspect someone was getting laid, but that’s just a guess.)

June 28th: The Rainbow Flag flies for the first time for the LGBT community. Who said “ Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love ?”

July 1st: Exhausted after returning from Japan, the band realizes all its equipment was sent to Chicago instead of Texas for their performance at the Cotton Bowl as part of Texxas Jam. They played a stellar show for 82,000 people on rented equipment.

Aug 13th: The massive Santa Barbara earthquake hits central California. However, rumors that it was begun during a rehearsal of “ Eruption ” by EVH are unfounded, as the band was in Landover, Maryland at the time.

Aug 27th: The gang returns to the city that never sleeps. Only this time, instead of the cozy confines of New York’s Palladium, the band takes the stage at Madison Square Garden for the very first time.

Sept 23rd: The band steals thunder from Boston and Black Sabbath with the brilliant parachute stunt .

October 10th: Diamond Dave spends his birthday rocking a SRO crowd in Essen, Germany, as the band plays the world-famous Grugahalle, a concert venue whose long list of headlining acts included (at the time) Ella Fitzgerald, Bill Haley & the Comets, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, Led Zeppelin, The Grateful Dead, Beach Boys and lots of fellow Rock & Roll Hall of Famers.

1978-10-10-DLR-birthday-cake

Surprise! Warner Bros. group Van Halen celebrate the birthday of lead singer David Lee Roth, second from left, at a post-concert surprise party after the opening night of their European tour in Hamburg. With Roth are Van Halen members Michael Anthony, Alex Van Halen and Edward Van Halen.

November 23rd: Van Halen mashes potatoes with thunderous guitar and drum solos, celebrating Thanksgiving in Houston, Texas, rocking a sold-out Sam Houston Coliseum.

December 3rd: The 2nd show of the 29th season of The Bob Hope Show airs, featuring Lucille Ball, Ginger Rogers, Donny and Marie Osmond and Gerald Ford. All those folks, while Van Halen closes out its first tour at the San Diego Sports Arena.

Were you fortunate enough to have caught Van Halen during the 1978 tour? We’d love to hear your memories about this big part of the band’s history.  Chime in below!

Brian Eno, an artist behind one of the best albums of 1978

The best albums of 1978 see the world of music in flux. Punk was already “so old” that post-punk was starting, not least with albums by Magazine, Devo, and Public Image Limited. Parliament and Funkadelic were in fine form. But perhaps the artist that had the biggest year was Brian Eno , who released his genre-defining Music for Airports and produced a few records from this list. There’s plenty more to discover here, though. So sit back, relax, and enjoy this list of the best albums from 1978.

Explore more of the essential 1970s albums on vinyl.

Stewart took a bold risk with this album trying his hand at full-blown disco music. Depending on who you ask it may or may not have been worth it, but regardless it remains a super fun album to listen to.

58: Little Feat – Waiting For Columbus

The band’s first live album expertly captures the magic of their live shows, from new arrangements of old songs to luxuriously lengthy jam sessions.

Elton John ’s first musical foray sans Bernie Taupin was a big risk for the pop star but thankfully it paid off mightily in the form of a highly enjoyable and skillful pop record.

Elton John - Song For Guy

The popular punk band’s fourth studio album introduced a new drummer and new approaches to song-writing and production that resulted in more complex emotions and a pop-friendlier sound.

Groovy, rocking, and righteous, Third World’s 1978 album Journey to Addis is reggae at its cool and soulful best.

Fret Not Thyself

37: Queen – Jazz

While there’s no actual jazz on the album, Queen was clearly inspired by the genre’s idiosyncratic approach when it came to the Jazz album. Too sonically eclectic for some, it did deliver some of the most enduring anthems in Queen’s catalog, from “Don’t Stop Me Now” to “Fat Bottomed Girls.”

36: Thin Lizzy – Live And Dangerous

Bob Marley - Is This Love (Official Music Video)

The English punk icons’ sophomore effort is sleeker and more produced than their debut but no less powerful, proving that nothing can hold back the raw energy of the band.

02: Brian Eno ‎– Ambient 1 (Music For Airports)

An enduring masterpiece that has inspired generations, Ambient 1 (Music For Airports) perfectly captures the fleeting moments of calm that exist between the noise and bustle of modern life.

1/1 (Remastered 2004)

01: Talking Heads – More Songs About Buildings and Food

Working with producer Brian Eno, Talking Heads turned in one of their finest front-to-back albums with this second effort in 1978 . The highlight, though, is the Al Green cover “Take Me to the River.”

If you aren’t going to bother putting them in any kind of order, why number them?

Or is it a hipster thing, where you have to put obscure albums high in the rankings, so you appear to have some secret knowledge, some expertise known only to you that leads you that order, which shows you know better than the reader? I think the emperor has no clothes. This is random.

About The Rolling Stones’ 1978 U.S. Tour

The Stones 1978 US tour took place during June and July following the release of the Some Girls album, a total of 25 shows, starting in Lakeland, Florida (June 10) and closing down at the Oakland Coliseum on July 26 . *Click for MORE STONES ARTICLES

From WikiZero The tour used a stripped back, minimal stage show compared to the previous Tour of the Americas ’75 and Tour of Europe ’76 , possibly due to the emergence of the punk rock scene and its emphasis solely on music and attitude rather than presenting a grandiose stage extravaganza. Continuing a schedule started in 1966 of touring the United States exactly every three years, the Stones played in a mixture of theatres, sometimes under a pseudonym (i.e., at the start of the 1978 US Tour in Lakeland, Florida, the Stones were billed on the ticket as “The Great Southeast Stoned Out Wrestling Champions”), arenas, and stadiums, a practice that they would follow for many of their future tours as well. The tour was the first in which Charlie Watts used the famous Gretsch drum set that he continues to play with the Stones to this day, as well as his first employment of a china cymbal as a crash. The concerts featured backing vocals by Ronnie Wood and Keith Richards, something that the Stones would get away from beginning with their next tour when Richards handled the majority of the backing vocals himself. However, this United States tour did not carry on into Europe in 1979, breaking the group’s similar schedule of performing in Europe every three years, which had started in 1967. This gap-year from touring prompted Keith Richards to join Ronnie Wood on his 1979 United States solo tour, to promote his then-album Gimme Some Neck , in the process forming the band The New Barbarians .

More about The Rolling Stones 1978 U.S. tour

Rock critic Robert Christgau wrote that the 1978 Tour was an improvement over the group’s previous go-around, “especially when Mick Jagger stopped prancing long enough to pick up a guitar and get into the good new songs from Some Girls .” This was billed as the “Farewell Tour’ as, at the time, it was going to be their last. The tour is widely believed among fans to be one of the band’s greatest, largely because it was in many ways back to basics both in musical and visual terms. It meant a return to a mixture of classic Stones numbers (“Tumbling Dice”, “Star Star”, “Happy”, “Street Fighting Man”, etc.) mixed with blues numbers and Chuck Berry covers ( “Sweet Little Sixteen” in particular, in light of his music’s influence on Keith Richards and 1978 being the Stones’s sixteenth anniversary), as well as including a large number of songs from the then-newly-released Some Girls LP. It was the first tour featuring songs written with Ronnie Wood as an official member of the Rolling Stones, and his contributions from this period are considered by many Stones fans as some of his greatest with the band. While no live album was released immediately following this tour, a fair amount of bootleg releases showcased its musical qualities – most notably the multi-show King Biscuit Flower Hour FM recording often known as “Handsome Girls”. In 2011, a CD and DVD set was released of a July, 1978 performance from Fort Worth, Texas entitled Some Girls: Live In Texas ’78 . In addition to the complete concert, the DVD included footage of the tour rehearsals and the three songs the Rolling Stones performed live on the Saturday Night Live television show in October, 1978. Guest artists that played with the Stones during individual shows included Linda Ronstadt, Sugar Blue, Doug Kershaw, Bobby Keys and Nicky Hopkins. Other opening acts included Van Halen, Journey, Peter Tosh, Patti Smith, Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, Foreigner, Eddie Money, Kansas, Etta James, Furry Lewis, Atlanta Rhythm Section, April Wine, The Outlaws, and the Doobie Brothers.

Beyoncé's "Cowboy Carter" breaks streaming records

By Caitlin O'Kane

April 2, 2024 / 9:48 AM EDT / CBS News

Last week, Beyoncé released "Cowboy Carter,"  a 27-track country album the bends the genre and has already made history. Fans clearly can't get enough of the album, which has already broken streaming records on several platforms.

Spotify announced on social media last week that on the day the album dropped, Friday, March 29, it became the platform's most-streamed album in a single day in 2024 so far.

"Cowboy Carter" also earned the title of most-first day streams of a country album by a female artist on Amazon Music. The album also saw Beyoncé's biggest debut on the streaming platform, Amazon Music shared on social media .

Ahead of the album's release, Beyoncé dropped two singles on Super Bowl Sunday: "Texas Hold 'Em" and "16 Carriages." The former debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Country Charts, making Beyoncé the first Black woman to top that chart, according to Billboard .

"Texas Hold 'Em" itself bends genres, landing on nine U.S. charts including pop, adult alternative, country, rhythmic, urban and R&B.

The album debuted at No. 2 on Apple Music charts and 26 out of 27 songs are currently on the streaming service's top 100 list.

Beyoncé, a Houston native who is also the album's executive producer, said in a statement it is "the best music I've ever made."

The album features collaborations with stars like Miley Cyrus and versions of iconic songs like Dolly Parton's 1973 hit "Jolene." Parton and Willie Nelson also lend their voices to vignettes on the album, as does Linda Martell, the first commercially successful Black woman country artist.

Beyoncé also covers the 1968 song "Blackbird" by the Beatles, featuring Black country singer-songwriters Tanner Adell, Brittney Spencer, Tiera Kennedy and Reyna Roberts. Her song "Protector" features audio from her 6-year-old daughter, Rumi, and she collaborates on two songs with rapper Shaboozey.

She also samples Nancy Sinatra's 1966 song "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'" on the track "Ya Ya."

Sinatra reacted to the song on social media , writing: "To have a little piece of one of my records in a @Beyonce song is very meaningful to me because I love her. She represents what is great about today's music and I'm delighted to be a tiny part of it. This may be the best sample of 'Boots' yet! And the beat goes on."

Parton also posted about Beyoncé's cover of "Jolene," a scornful song with lyrics that warn a woman to stay away from your man. "Beyoncé is giving that girl some trouble and she deserves it," Parton wrote .

Cowboy Carter is the hotly anticipated follow-up to to Beyoncé's 2022 album, Renaissance .

How long have fans been speculating over the details of Beyoncé 's new album? It depends when you start counting: Some began buzzing over it the second her previous record, the dance-centric Renaissance , was released in 2022 and touted as "act one" of a trilogy. But the chatter has been especially fervent in the past two months, as singles, visuals and other teases popped up during the Grammys, Super Bowl and on the artist's own social media. The Beyhive's busiest bees analyzed clues that pointed toward a country music-inspired sound; they dissected the history of that genre, and how Black musicians have often been written out of it.

After months of anticipation, Cowboy Carter has finally arrived. Is it a country album? In many ways, yes — but it's also a sprawling work filled with disparate influences and references, while remaining a Beyoncé album at its heart. Two NPR Music staffers, reporter Sidney Madden and editor Sheldon Pearce , have been listening since the stroke of midnight. They come to you now with the 10 most important things to know about exactly what Cowboy Carter is, and is not.

Beyoncé's new album is inspired by backlash to her entering the country music genre

Beyoncé's new album is inspired by backlash to her entering the country music genre

1. It's a sprawling Western epic...

Just as Beyoncé's 2022 album, act i: RENAISSANCE , served as a world-building homage to the unsung Black queer youth who created house music, Cowboy Carter continues the lesson plan. In a statement soon after the album's worldwide release, the artist's Parkwood Entertainment shared that each song on the 27-track project is its own version of a reimagined Western film: "She took inspiration from films like Five Fingers for Marseilles , Urban Cowboy , The Hateful Eight , Space Cowboys , The Harder They Fall and Killers of the Flower Moon , often having the films playing on a screen during the recording process."

Each track, whether an interlude, collaboration or poignant solo, rides out like a full-length film full of scenic grandeur, character and conflicts that any Chitlin' Circuit aficionado or spaghetti Western cinephile can obsess over. As a whole, Cowboy Carter serves as a well of discovery, full of samples, sonic Easter eggs, Knowles family callbacks and, most importantly, an appreciation for pioneers in the country world.

2. ... with a searing image of its titular central character.

In the cowboy, Beyoncé finds her ideal figure of the American West and South. She cites the rodeo as the first place where anyone who loved country music and culture could gather and mingle and feel welcome. It's an image that runs counter to the experience that inspired the album: performing her song "Daddy Lessons" at the CMA Awards in 2016, where she has said she "did not feel welcomed ... and it was very clear that I wasn't." The Cowboy Carter character exists in conversation with the history of Black cowboys, the loaded meaning behind the term and its function in the American imagination.

3. It's a country album...

There are plenty of categorically country sounds on Cowboy Carter . String instruments are its sonic heartbeat, and the do-si-do of the slide guitar on "DESERT EAGLE" and "TEXAS HOLD 'EM" feel perfectly matched with Bey's feathery vocals. The jovial wiggle of the accordions on "RIIVERDANCE" tip a hat to zydeco music and the artist's Creole heritage. "PROTECTOR" (featuring Beyoncé's youngest daughter, Rumi) is anchored by acoustic guitar. "SWEET HONEY BUCKIIN' " interpolates "I Fall to Pieces," the shuffling standard made famous by Patsy Cline . Compared to Bey's past work in an R&B world full of glitz and glamor, many moments on the album, even with their layered arrangements, feel like intimate jam sessions straight out of a Nashville writing camp.

4. ... and it's also not.

Across the track list, elements of hip-hop, bluegrass and Chicano rock, with pop, rock, Jersey club music and operatic runs. "YA YA" conjures the charisma of Tina Turner and Chuck Berry , while winking in the direction of Nancy Sinatra and The Beach Boys . "BODYGUARD" is a breezy surf-rock romp with Latin percussion and a little whiskey on its breath. "AMEN" rings to the rafters in true gospel splendor. "SWEET HONEY BUCKIIN' " stacks genre upon genre and yet never overwhelms, instead connecting the dots between them with dusty horse gallops. The production credits stretch far beyond the scope of country stalwarts, making the album a treasure hunt for fans and issuing a challenge to the ways country music has come to be defined.

5. It's got country and Americana icons to set the tone...

Voices from country lore appear throughout the track list, signposts for the album's deconstructions of genre. The outlaw country pioneer Willie Nelson , who once bucked the Nashville sound himself, stands in as the host of KNTRY Radio Texas, Beyoncé's fictional pirate station. Dolly Parton draws a line from Becky with the good hair to Jolene, and turns up again before "TYRANT," encouraging Beyoncé to light up a juke joint. In a prelude to one of the album's most adventurous cuts, "SPAGHETTII," Linda Martell, an undersung, trailblazing Black country star of the '70s, lays out a sort of mission statement: "Genres are a funny little concept, aren't they? Yes, they are. In theory, they have a simple definition that's easy to understand. But in practice, well, some may feel confined."

6. ... and it's flipping some old tropes.

There are covers of country classics here that stand out for how stealthily they're reimagined. Parton's 1973 hit "Jolene" shows up early in the album, but Beyoncé adds her own sauce to flip its storied narrative. A vigilant Bey (flip-flopping between being upset and unbothered) clocks the "bird" chirping round her man; unlike Dolly, who responds to a similar threat with a plea for mercy, she puts her rival on notice: " I'm warnin' you, woman, find you your own man / Jolene, I know I'm a queen, Jolene / I'm still a Creole banjee bitch from Louisianne ." This twist renegotiates the common push and pull of rolling-stone / damsel-in-distress infidelity that's historically been a hallmark in country standards, and has only recently started to shift (see also: Carrie Underwood 's "Before He Cheats").

Jay-Z and Beyoncé's blank space: The endless social climb of pop's royal couple

Jay-Z and Beyoncé's blank space

7. It gives flowers to unsung pioneers.

When Linda Martell shows up in the opening moments of "SPAGHETTII" to pose her question about genres, the slick rhetorical framing cuts to the main conceit of Cowboy Carter and centers Martell herself as a case in point. As a pioneer in the country space, Martell made history with her 1970 album, Color Me Country , and was the first Black woman to perform on the storied Grand Ole Opry. But because of the racist aggression she endured when moving from pop to country, Martell soon left the business. Now, at 82 years old, Martell's getting her due. Her voice is immortalized on both "SPAGHETTII" and "THE LINDA MARTELL SHOW," both tracks that play hopscotch with a range of genres. "I am proud that Beyoncé is exploring her country music roots," the veteran posted on Instagram . "What she is doing is beautiful, and I'm honored to be a part of it. It's Beyoncé, after all!"

8. It shines a light on the stars of country's new age.

A recent study tracking country music programming from 2000 through 2020 revealed that only 29% of country songs played on format radio were by women artists, and of that 29%, 0.01% were Black women. And so along with honoring pioneers, Cowboy Carter platforms new stars in the field who are still working their way through its entrenched gatekeeping and redlining.

Rhiannon Giddens strums her banjo on the album's lead single, "TEXAS HOLD 'EM." Virginia's Shaboozey, whose 2022 release, Cowboys Live Forever, Outlaws Never Die , offered songs for a post-"Old Town Road" country-rap world, cuts through two tracks with his unforgettable tone. "BLACKBIIRD" features the vocals of four Black women — Tanner Adell , Brittney Spencer, Tiera Kennedy and Reyna Roberts. This soulful cover of The Beatles ' classic about Black women's plights and resilience during the American Civil Rights movement puts its subjects in a spotlight that country radio rarely does, bringing home the reality that opportunities for artists like these have scarcely grown in the years since Martell broke ground.

9. It saddles up over the pop-country middle ground.

On Cowboy Carter , Beyoncé is a pop star actively in conversation with the idea of country music, and traversing the distance between those genres seems to have made her consider the existing relationship between them. In two moments on the album, she enlists singers who have been blurring that binary for quite some time: Miley Cyrus and Post Malone . Miley, of course, is the daughter of "Achy Breaky Heart" sensation Billy Ray Cyrus , and in her own pursuit of a pop identity, fiddled with Mike WiLL trap, Flaming Lips psychedelia, glam rock and country pop before settling on the centering sounds of last year's Endless Summer Vacation , which earned her a record of the year Grammy for "Flowers." For his part, Post broke out as a watercolor trap rockstar and has since shifted toward a sound more in line with his Texas roots. Both seem to resonate with the ambiguity Bey sees running through the music.

10. There's more beneath the rhinestone jewel case.

Beyond the many featured guests, other behind-the-scenes contributors help tell the story. The-Dream , Pharrell , No I.D., Raphael Saadiq , Ryan Tedder, Ryan Beatty and Swizz Beatz all helped produce the record. It also boasts an incredibly accomplished cast of supporting players: Pulitzer-winning folk revivalist Giddens , Grammy-winning soul man Jon Batiste , session luminary Nile Rodgers, gospel pedal steelist Robert Randolph , blues rocker Gary Clark Jr. , hip-hop banjoist Willie Jones and the incomparable Stevie Wonder . The incredible variety of names and skills is the secret sauce behind Cowboy Carter 's sprawling vision.

The Black Crowes kick off tour in Nashville with high-energy show featuring Lainey Wilson

T he Black Crowes' brothers Chris and Rich Robinson kicked off their 35-date "Happiness Bastards" tour Tuesday night at the Opry House in Nashville and introduced the crowd to arguably some of their best new music in decades backed up with a few classic favorites and choice cover tunes.

On a minimal set decorated only with strings of white lights, uniquely mismatched Marshall stacks, a life-size dressing room mirror, and a cardboard cutout of Chuck Berry peeking from behind the curtain, the Crowes gave the crowd exactly what they'd been hoping for: Chris' pipes of steel, Rich's excellent guitar chops and a surprise appearance by Lainey Wilson.

"If you're going to play the Grand Ole Opry, you have to bring out a bona fide country superstar," Chris told the crowd as he welcomed Wilson to the stage. She sang a duet from the new album called "Wilted Rose" and then stayed to back the brothers on a powerful version of "She Talks to Angels."

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Chris danced and strutted across the stage in typical Black Crowes fashion, while his brother Rich focused on his guitar playing.

Kicking off the night at the packed-out Opry House despite looming severe weather Tuesday night were "Bedside Manners" and "Rats and Clowns" from the new album, "Happiness Bastards," which is the group's first original release in 15 years.

Lauren Daigle, Tyler Childers, Mitski: 10 can't-miss concerts in Nashville this April

"It's been a little while since we've had some new songs to play for you all," Chris Robinson teased the crowd.

Next came an old favorite, "Twice as Hard" from the band's 1990 smash "Shake Your Money Maker." The band would layer in hits from that first album including "Remedy," "Jealous Again," and their biggest hit they didn't write, "Hard to Handle."

"A few years ago, we were lucky enough to have the idea to record this song," he said of "Hard to Handle." "Written by the greatest soul singer of all time from Macon, Georgia. His name was Otis Redding and we've been riding on this song for a long time."

The band seemed to enjoy performing the show as much as the crowd enjoyed watching it and dancing to it. The Crowes played for a solid 90 minutes before leaving the stage briefly to return for a one-song encore with Lou Reed's "White Light/White Heat."

It was a great way to kick off this new tour, which Chris Robinson said was not the first one they've started in Nashville.

"This marks two tours we've started in Nashville," he said. "Maybe this could become a thing."

The Setlist:

  • "Rats and Clowns"
  • "Twice as Hard"

J. Cole Responds to Kendrick Lamar Diss on ‘7 Minute Drill,’ Included on Surprise New Album ‘Might Delete Later’

J Cole iHeartRadio Music Festival 2021

When Future and Metro Boomin dropped their recent collaborative album “We Don’t Trust You” last month, fans were quick to latch onto Kendrick Lamar’s guest verse on “Like That,” where he took shots at Drake and J. Cole for including him as part of the “big three” on their duet “First Person Shooter,” released last year.

While Drake has vaguely referenced Lamar’s diss on his current tour, J. Cole took a direct approach with the surprise release of his new project “Might Delete Later,” responding to the diss on the concluding song “7 Minute Drill.”

He continues by referencing Lamar’s five-part “The Heart” series that he’s rolled out in pieces throughout his career. “He averaging one ‘Heart’ verse like every 30 months or something / If he wasn’t dissing, then we wouldn’t be discussing nothin’ / Blood don’t make me have to smoke this n—a ’cause I fuck with him / But push come to shove on this mic I will humble him.”

Fans have been eagerly awaiting a response from the rappers after Lamar’s cameo on “Like That.” Lamar initially took issue with J. Cole’s bars that put them in the same tier of success: “Love when they argue the hardest MC / Is it K. Dot? Is it Aubrey? Or me? / We the big three, like we started a league.”

Lamar fired back with a pointed response: “Yeah get up with me, fuck sneak dissing / ‘First Person Shooter,’ I hope they came with three switches,” he sneered. “Motherfuck the big three, n—a, it’s just big me.”

Cole previously came under fire for veiled homophobia on his 2013 song “Villuminati,” where he clumsily attempted to subvert the usage of slurs against gay people.

“Might Delete Later” arrives after his sixth solo album, “The Off-Season,” which released in 2021. The 12-song project features guest appearances from Ari Lennox, Gucci Mane, Bas, Central Cee and Cam’Ron.
