Girl Eat World

A girl's adventure in food and travel around the world, karuizawa travel guide: what to do, where to eat, and where to stay.

Karuizawa is a popular resort town, located just a few hours off Tokyo . To people from Tokyo, Karuizawa is known as an idyllic mountain town known for skiing during winter and an escape from the heat during summer.

It is also famous as a place where many celebrities have bought their second homes – including Bill Gates according to rumors! And most recently, Karuizawa gained global popularity as the filming location of the beloved Japanese reality show Terrace House.

Karuizawa is a great option for a quick weekend trip from Tokyo when you just want to get away from the city, or as a stop if you’re doing a multi-day trip. I have found myself visiting Karuizawa twice, once as a standalone weekend trip and once as a road trip around Nagano prefecture

How to get to Karuizawa from Tokyo

From Tokyo By Train  – Karuizawa can be reached from Ueno station via JR Hokuriku Shinkansen in about an hour. If you have an  Unlimited JR Pass , the train is covered.

Karuizawa Travel Guide

Rent a car and drive from Tokyo  – This is the most convenient and easy option since you won’t have to depend on public transport. It takes about 2.5 – 3 hours one way to get to Karuizawa from Tokyo by car. Driving in Japan requires an International Driving License. Book a car rental from Tokyo, which you can pick up from the airport or in the city:

  • Car Rental  Pick up from Narita Airport
  • Car Rental  Pick up from Haneda Airport
  • Car Rental  Pick up in Tokyo

How many days should I spend in Karuizawa?

Karuizawa is not a big town. I think 1 or 2 days is enough here, making it a quick easy weekend trip from Tokyo.

Where to stay in Karuizawa

I’ve gone to Karuizawa as a couple with my husband, and I’ve also gone to Karuizawa as part of a large family in a group of 10. Here are the accommodations I would recommend:

  • Karuizawa Pension Sato is where we stayed on one of our visits to Karuizawa. It’s a super cute 2-story house, located deep inside the foresty streets of Karuizawa, where you can pick rooms with either a shared bathroom or a private bathroom ensuite.
  • Hotel Wellies – a cute British-style cabin hotel located in the resort area of Karuizawa
  • APA Hotel Karuizawa Ekimae – If convenience is what you’re after, this hotel is only 2 mins walk from the station with easy access to Karuizawa tourist spots.

Karuizawa Travel Guide - Our Mountain lodge

When we traveled with our family, we opted for a 3-bedroom villa with a kitchen to give everyone plenty of space and privacy. There are plenty of such accommodations in Karuizawa since it is a resort town. Here are examples of villas in Karuizawa:

  • La Maison Karuizawa
  • Shishi Iwa House
  • Villa Metza Karuizawa

How to get around Karuizawa

By Bus – From Karuizawa station, there are plenty of shuttle buses that will take you to points of interest in Karuizawa. Click here to find out about those buses.

By Bicycle – Going around on a bike is a popular option in Karuizawa. You can find bike rentals easily near the Karuizawa JR station.

What to do in Karuizawa

Karuizawa is the perfect mountain town that has everything: nature, hiking, good food, and shopping. Here are some activities you can do in Karuizawa:

1. Visit Harunire Terrace

On paper, Harunire Terrace might just be a shopping strip. But it’s really more than that! It’s special due to its location right next to Yu River and its warm wooden architecture covered in lush green trees. All of the shops here are also local Japanese brands, not big names that you can just find anywhere else.

Harunire Terrace in Nagano

Definitely stop by Harunire Terrace for a hot chocolate, some sweets, or even a meal if you’re up for it. There is a dedicated area with chairs and benches where you can sit by the river if you need to relax for a little while.

2. Kogen Church & Stone Church

Not far from Harunire Terrace are Kogen Church and Karuizawa Stone Church. The churches are part of the Hoshino resort, and it is evidently quite popular for a wedding. We saw at least 5 couples scouting out wedding venues and there was even a wedding going on as we were passing by.

Karuizawa Kogen Church

3. Walk around Kumoba Pond

Kumoba Pond is a lovely relaxing pond close to the center of Karuizawa. If you’re not in a hurry, a walk circling around this pond takes about 30-40 minutes. You can cycle to the pond, but you have to dismount your bike and leave it at the parking area by the entrance.

Kumabo Pond in Karuizawa

Also near the entrance of the pond is a cute restaurant called Kumobatei , which serves Japanese-western dishes like corn soup, Japanese curry, and dishes made from local veggies.

Kumabotei in Karuizawa

4. Take a hot bath at Hoshino Onsen

During my road trip to Nagano prefecture, I tried many onsens. Hoshino Onsen was my favorite onsen (Japanese hot spring) on this entire trip. Hoshino is also the nicest one I’ve visited so far even if it’s a bit small.

Hoshino Onsen in Karuizawa

The entrance ticket to enjoy Hoshino Onsen was 1350 yen, which is about double or even triple the price of a regular onsen. That said, I didn’t think it was too expensive for the experience!

As with anything traditional in Japan, going to an Onsen does come with its own set of etiquette which might not be apparent to foreigners like us. If you’re curious about Onsen and want to check them out, please read my guide to Onsen ! I’ve included everything I knew about visiting Onsen in that article.

One thing to keep in mind is if you have a tattoo. Hoshino Onsen is a tattoo-friendly establishment, as long as your tattoo is not too big (maximum 8×10 cm). They’ll ask you to purchase a skin-colored plaster to cover up your tattoo for 250 yen each – this is what I had to do since I have a small tattoo on my back.

Tattoo warning at Hoshino Onsen

When you are done bathing, don’t forget to check out the cozy restaurant outside Hoshino Onsen – called Sonmin-Shokudo . They serve all kinds of washoku (Japanese dishes) including a miso karaage (deep-fried chicken) that is prepared locally. I also enjoyed their shabu shabu set and their mushroom hotpot.

Deep-fried Miso flavored chicken

5. Onioshidashi Park (30-min bus ride from Karuizawa)

Technically, Onioshidashi Park is not in Karuizawa but is accessible from town. It’s only a 30-minute car ride or bus ride from Karuizawa and from Naka-Karuizawa stations, and the bus operates hourly.

Onioshidashi Park

Onioshidashi literally means “Pushing out the devil”. This park is famous due to the rugged terrain of volcanic rocks, which was formed when the nearby volcano Mount Asama erupted in 1783. If the weather is clear, you can see Mount Asama from the park! When I visited it was really foggy so I could only see the base of the mountain.

Onioshidashi Park

At Onioshidashi Park, you can take the trekking trails around the park which will take you roughly an hour. There is a temple you can check out, as well as various restaurants and souvenir shops at the beginning of the trail.

6. Kyukaruizawa Ginza-dori (Old Karuizawa Shopping Street)

A little bit bigger than Harunire Terrace, this is a cozy shopping street where you can shop for souvenirs and local handcraft, or get a nice meal. It’s a famous visitor spot, but you can still find charming shops and products here. I walked away with a few beautiful ceramic plates from the Meiji period which runs from the years 1868 to 1912.

Karuizawa Travel Guide - Kyukaruizawa Ginza-dori

7. Karuizawa Prince Shopping Plaza

Alright, want to know what Japanese REALLY do when they visit Karuizawa? They go shopping at Prince shopping plaza. This shopping plaza is actually what Americans would call an outlet mall, and it’s absolutely fantastic if you’re in the mood for shopping.

Karuizawa Travel Guide - Karuizawa Prince Shopping Plaza

You might think – I’ve gone all the way to Japan, why would I want to shop? Well, I can assure you shopping in Japan is something you must try at least once. Because the Japanese consumer market is unique, even the big brands like Adidas or Nike might carry something a bit different than what they would stock in the rest of the world.

8. Shiraito no taki (Waterfall of white threads)

Shiraito waterfall is a famous attraction not too far from Karuizawa town. The waterfall is not very tall (only about 3m in height), but it is impressively wide at around 70m width.

During winter, they might have illumination events at night. Check out the calendar here. Take note that if you are driving there during winter, you’ll want to prepare with snow tires. We tried heading out without snow tires and had to turn around due to icy conditions on the road.

9. Visit Kusatsu Onsen

From Karuizawa, you could take a direct bus to Kusatsu Onsen, which is a popular onsen town. It takes about 80 minutes by bus, so it’s very possible to make it a day trip out of Karuizawa.

Tip: If you want to visit Kusatu, check out my Kusatsu travel guide to see what you can do there.

Yubatake at Kusatsu

What to eat in Karuizawa

  • Cheesecake from Izumiya Saku at Harunire Terrace
  • Sonmin-Shokudo at Hoshino Onsen
  • Kumobatei next to Kumoba Pond
  • SASA Japanese Cuisine – famous as the curry shop of one of the Terrace House participant
  • Restaurant Hamy’s – A cute cafe by day, swiss restaurant by night.

And that’s all I know about Karuizawa! If you’re on a trip around Nagano prefecture, you’ll want to check out my Nagano blog for some more tips and travel ideas.

Til next time ✌️

The resort town of Karuizawa in Nagano is a popular destination for various outdoor recreation pursuits, from cycling to skiing...

About Karuizawa

Tokyo is a great city to enjoy, with its unfinishable array of sights, shops and restaurants, but sometimes it's nice to get away for a day or two to somewhere quieter, and enjoy a more tranquil pace. Very different in feel, slightly touristy but with interesting and varied sights, Karuizawa is a good place to head away to, especially in summer, when it's cooler and less humid than the capital.

What to do and see

With a very early start, you could visit the rugged volcanic landscape of Oni-Oshi-Dashi , about 30-40 minutes drive or bus ride from Karuizawa station. The town is also known for its numerous art museums such as the Sezon Museum of Modern Art , the Hiroshi Senju Museum and the Wakita Museum of Art , and for historical sights like the Shaw Memorial House and the old Mikasa Hotel, a designated important cultural asset now open as a museum. This latter can be visited on the way to or from Shiraito Falls , a graceful waterfall a few kilometres out of town; if you don't want to venture so far for your relaxing scenery, then near the station there's the equally attractive Kumoba Pond .

Where to shop

Immediately south of the station there's the Prince Shopping Plaza , a beautifully landscaped outlet centre with stores from a wide range of fashion brands. A couple of kilometres north there's the fun Kyu-Karuizawa shopping street , where you can load up on souvenirs and locally produced foodstuffs like honeys, jams and liqueurs.

Where to eat

There's a cluster of restaurants and cafes in the Prince Shopping Plaza, and plenty more scattered throughout the town. The main road north of the station has a couple of Chinese restaurants and smaller cafes such as Conversa or, for the very sweet of tooth, the Chocolate Factory . The district south of the station has fewer places, but there's a small friendly steakhouse on the road leading directly south, while a bit further away there's the classy but affordable CoDow and the appealing Cafe Ruhe .

Where to stay

While it's perfectly possible to enjoy Karuizawa as a brisk day-trip from Tokyo, staying a night or two will give you a more leisurely experience, and there's a range of accommodation to suit every budget. Chisun Inn is a business hotel south of the station, while Hoshinoya is a luxury resort complex with beautiful grounds that are home to Harunire Terrace , a shopping area where you can find the Pure Milk Gelato Nagai Farm among other places to shop and eat. For something a little different, the Prince Hotel has some log cabins that are surrounded by greenery but perfectly comfortable; or for a complete getaway, in the mountains outside the town there's the Hotel Green Plaza , with five restaurants, an open-air hot spring and 18-hole golf course.

How to get there

Quickest and easiest is the bullet train from Tokyo or Ueno stations, which runs every half hour or so, takes about an hour, and costs ¥5910 one way. If you're in less of a hurry, there are buses from Shinagawa station that cost ¥2100 and take around three hours; if you have your own car you can drive there yourself in the same time on the Joshinetsu Highway.

14. Onioshidashi Volcanic Park in Joshinetsu Highlands National Park

Karuizawa: 10 Must-Visit Places in the Famous Resort Near Tokyo

Photo by Pixta Onioshidashi Volcanic Park offers a striking and dynamic landscape that stands in stark contrast to Karuizawa's lush green nature. The park's terrain is covered with volcanic rocks and remnants from the catastrophic eruption of Mt. Asama in 1783. This eruption darkened the skies with smoke, enveloping the area in darkness for several days.

As a result of the unfortunate events that have occurred repeatedly, the park earned its nickname as the "devil's playground." Amidst the rubble and ash, a symbol of hope emerges in the form of the vibrant red Asamayama Kannondo Temple, dedicated to the goddess of mercy. This dedication is fitting for an area that has experienced immense destruction.

Karuizawa: 10 Must-Visit Places in the Famous Resort Near Tokyo

Photo by Pixta The park provides panoramic views of the surrounding villages and towns, stretching across prefectural borders and even extending into Gunma prefecture. It is a popular location within the expansive Joshinetsu Highlands National Park, which spans three different prefectures. In fact, this national park is recognized as the fourth largest in Japan and is cherished for its abundance of natural attractions, including the renowned snow monkeys in Nagano.

Visitors can enjoy different views and immerse themselves in distinct environments as they traverse this fascinating region of Japan.

15. GAFLO CAFE by Flower FIELD

Karuizawa: 16 Must-Visit Places in the Famous Resort Near Tokyo

In Karuizawa, you will find three captivating venues designed and created by the esteemed company, Flower Fields. These locations offer a splendid blend of nature and beauty. The first is GATE Flower FIELD, an atmospheric flower shop made of wood.

Here, visitors can delight in a wide range of flower arrangements, home decor, and even wedding flower arrangements.

Karuizawa: 16 Must-Visit Places in the Famous Resort Near Tokyo

After exploring this enchanting shop, travelers can make their way to Gaflo Cafe, a charming woodland cafe nestled amidst foliage. With each passing season, the cafe transforms, creating a unique atmosphere throughout the year. Adorned with flowers from ceiling to wooden tables, the venue resembles a house straight out of a fairytale.

Karuizawa: 16 Must-Visit Places in the Famous Resort Near Tokyo

Guests can appreciate Karuizawa's breathtaking nature by taking a seat on the terrace, which offers an open view. Mirrors designed as windows grace the terrace walls, reflecting the warm sun rays and vibrant greenery. This creates the illusion of an infinite forest continuing within the building. Gaflo Cafe caters to vegans, offering a delightful selection of meals and afternoon tea completely free from animal products.

Situated alongside Gate Wedding and Gate Flower Field, Gaflo Cafe is an ideal spot for flower and nature enthusiasts, as well as brides-to-be. The location can be reached in approximately 50 minutes from Karuizawa Station by train and walking. Driving is recommended due to its proximity to a national road.

We also recommend visiting two other delightful spots in Karuizawa created by the same team. FLOWER FIELD GARDENS is a beloved gardening center that has thrived since 2005. It offers an array of beautiful flowers, home decor, and antiques, serving as Flower Fields' flagship store in Karuizawa.

Getting to Karuizawa from Tokyo and Osaka

Karuizawa

We explain how to get to Karuizawa from Tokyo and Osaka efficiently.

You can take either the Shinkansen or a highway bus to Karuizawa. Taking the Shinkansen will be 1,000 to 2,000 yen more expensive, but the train will arrive an hour or two hours earlier than the bus, a point in its favor.

By Shinkansen Take the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo or Shinagawa Station and get off at Karuizawa Station. Travel times and fares will vary by Shinkansen type, but you can expect to arrive in 65 to 80 minutes. This is the recommended method for holders of the Japan Rail Pass as the pass provides free unreserved seats on the Shinkansen.

Tokyo - Karuizawa Fare: 5,390 yen

Shinagawa/Karuizawa Fare: 5,710 yen

By Bus There are buses to Naka Karuizawa Station from Ikebukuro, Tatekawa, Yokohama and Haneda Airport.

Tokyo/Ikebukuro/Tatekawa-Karuizawa Fare: 2,500 yen one-way. 4,500 yen round-trip Travel time: Three hours

Yokohama/Haneda Airport - Karuizawa Fare: 3,200 yen one-way, 6,400 yen roundtrip Travel time: Four hours

By Shinkansen

When traveling from Shin-Osaka Station, you will need to transfer at Tokyo Station to get to Karuizawa Station.

Shin-Osaka - Karuizawa Fare: 17,820 yen Travel time: Four hours

By Bus There is a direct bus that runs through Kintetsu Osaka Abenobashi Station, the Namba OCAT building and the Higashi-Umeda subway station en route to Naka Karuizawa Station and Karuizawa Station.

Osaka - Karuizawa Fare: 9,500 yen one-way; 17,100 yen roundtrip Travel time: 11 and a half hours

If you want to minimize travel time and have the JR Pass , you should take the Shinkansen.

Getting around Karuizawa

Karuizawa

You can get around Karuizawa via bus or taxi; you can also rent a bicycle or car.

There are bus routes from Karuizawa Station which stop at Kyu Karuizawa, Naka Karuizawa Station, and Minami Karuizawa (an east loop and a south loop). Another route goes from Shinano-Oiwake Station to west Sengataki and Naka Karuizawa Station (a north loop). However, these buses are very infrequent, only running five or six times a day.

If your budget allows for it, we recommend renting a car to go sightseeing around Karuizawa. While you could also rent a bicycle, you should be aware of the conditions. Karuizawa has steep slopes in many places and can be extremely cold in winter.

MATCHA has an exclusive 10% discount coupon for international visitors when renting a vehicle from Nippon Rent-A-Car, one of Japan's leading rental car companies.

Naturally, there are numerous Nippon Rent-A-Car offices around Tokyo and Karuizawa. Be sure to check it out if you're considering renting a car!

Please refer to this article when choosing a travel method that best suits your traveling style!

Karuizawa Weather and What to Wear

Karuizawa is situated in the cold highlands. Because Karuizawa’s climate is comparatively less humid, it is characteristically cool in the summer and quite cold in the winter. Evenings can get chilly, even in the summertime, so you should have a shawl or light coat at the ready.

Protection against the cold is a must in the winter. You will definitely need a down jacket, gloves and some headwear. When going up into the mountains, it would be wise to prepare some spiked boots to deal with the snow. Snow glare can also cause UV damage to the eyes, so don’t forget to wear sunglasses. If you’re visiting in winter, have fun, but be sure to take precautions against the low temperatures and the snow.

In fact, the East High-speed Lift can also be used only for sightseeing by visitors who don't ski. Because it operates until late in the evening, it allows visitors to enjoy Karuizawa's nightscape.

The ski season lasts until March 31st. If you like winter sports, how about coming here?

Karuizawa in Summer: A Retreat from the Heat

Karuizawa - Top 10 Spots In The Famous Holiday Resort Near Tokyo

Karuizawa is especially famous as a summer retreat. Thanks to its high elevation, the air is cool even in the hot months of July and August. Ever since the Meiji period (1868-1912), Karuizawa has been a popular summer holiday resort for people living in the Tokyo area.

The beautiful Shiraito Falls and Kumoba Pond are just two of the scenic places that can be enjoyed in the summer. Below in this article, we introduce other great destinations to visit in Karuizawa.

Karuizawa Area Guide

Karuizawa is a comparatively compact town, but each area has its own distinct tone, from the clusters of villas in Shin-Karuizawa and Kyu Karuizawa to the bubbling hot springs in Naka Karuizawa .

Shin-Karuizawa and Kyu-Karuizawa

Karuizawa

Expanding outward from JR Karuizawa Station, Shin-Karuizawa is a haven for villa development. The high-class resort area two kilometers north of the station is called Kyu-Karuizawa, or Old Karuizawa. Kyu-Karuizawa is home to Karuizawa Ginza and the Kumoba Pond . The highlight of Shin-Karuizawa is the Karuizawa Prince Shopping Plaza .

Naka Karuizawa, Senga Falls

Naka Karuizawa is renowned for its hot springs. This is where you can find facilities like Sengataki Onsen and Hoshino Onsen , among others. The Karuizawa Kogen Church , the Senga Falls , as well as Harunire Terrace are just a few of its sightseeing spots.

Minami Karuizawa - The Southern Area

Represented by the Shiozawa Lake , the southern section of Karuizawa has its own uniquely elegant summer vibe, with art museums and rose gardens.

Hotels in Karuizawa

Karuizawa

As a resort area that was developed into an area for summer retreats, Karuizawa has many stylish wooden Western-style boardinghouses which can cost anywhere from 5,000 to 10,000 yen per night. There are many different types of these places, which include delicious breakfasts and are pet-friendly. Choose one to your liking.

Naka Karuizawa also has traditional onsen inns. These are also priced around 5,000 to 10,000 yen a night. We recommend staying in this area for those who want to soak in the hot springs and enjoy traditional Japanese cuisine.

The area also has many business and luxury hotels available on Booking.com . Three particularly well-reviewed hotels are The Prince Karuizawa , Hoshinoya Karuizawa and the Karuizawa Hotel Soyokaze . Let’s take a look at these three spots.

The Prince Karuizawa

Reasonably priced for a luxury hotel at 20,000 yen a night, this high-quality hotel offers excellent service. You can enjoy a Western-style breakfast while looking out at the hotel courtyard, which is popular with guests of all ranges. Guests also get special privileges like onsen admission, rental bicycle access and free morning coffee.

At Nagako-ken’s eastern edge, on the slopes of Asama-yama, is the ritzy resort of Karuizawa (軽井沢) where Crown Prince Akihito (now the emperor) met his future wife, Michiko, on the tennis courts in the 1950s, and where John Lennon and Yoko Ono vacationed in the 1960s and 1970s. Decades of such superstar patronage have lent this small town a fashionable reputation, and the place can get very hectic in summer as Tokyoites descend to relax in the cooler mountain air and spend up a storm at the giant outlet mall and tacky tourist-shop strip either side of the main station. It’s pretty easy to escape this commercial frenzy and enjoy Karuizawa’s natural tranquillity on easy trekking and cycling routes into the forested hills dotted with charming wooden villas and heritage buildings.

Tailor-made trips for   Japan

The scenic part of town begins in Kyū-Karuizawa (旧軽井沢), about 1km north of the station. Work your way past the tourists jamming the pedestrianized, tacky shopping street dubbed “Little Ginza”, to emerge into a forest. Here you’ll find the quaint wooden Anglican Chapel, fronted by a bust of the Canadian missionary Alexander Croft Shaw, who helped popularize the area as a retreat. A short walk southeast is the historic Mampei Hotel, which has a small museum of its memorabilia.

Heading northwest along the main road, Mikasa-dōri, it’s a pleasant 2km cycle ride or hike up to the secluded Old Mikasa Hotel (旧三笠ホテル), an elegant wooden building dating from 1906 that’s now a national monument. Follow the road north from here, past the camping ground, to Kose (小瀬) where a 10km hike to the scenic Shiraito Falls (白糸の滝) starts, and onwards west to Mine-no-chaya (峰の茶屋) from where you can take a bus back to Karuizawa Station.

A 6km pedal west of Karuizawa is Naka-Karuizawa (中軽井沢), another beautiful area for cycling, hiking and relaxing. The main focus is the Hoshino area where you’ll find the luxury resort hotel Hoshinoya, an excellent onsen, Tonbo-no-yu (トンボの湯), a forest of chestnut and larch trees where you can take guided nature tours and a stylish, low-key shopping and dining complex, Harunire Terrace. If you don’t feel like cycling, a free bus runs here from the south side of Karuizawa Station; enquire at the tourist information office about the schedule.

Looming ominously over Karuizawa is 2568m Asama-yama (浅間山), Japan’s highest triple-cratered active volcano, which last erupted in 2004. The closest you can get to the crater is on its north side at Onioshidashien (鬼押出し園), 21km from Karuizawa. Onioshidashien was the scene of a cataclysmic eruption on August 5, 1783, when ashes from the blowout were said to have darkened the sky as far as Europe, and a 7km-wide lava flow swept away Kanbara village. When the lava cooled it solidified into an extraordinary landscape of black boulders and bizarre rock shapes, where alpine plants now sprout and across which twisting pathways have been laid. To see the scale of the place, head up to the observation floor in the gift shop and restaurant complex at the entrance. Most of the crowds head for the central temple, Kannon-dō, standing on a raised red platform amid the black rocks, but you can easily escape them by continuing past to the quieter area behind.

karuizawa travel map

Just around an hour by bullet train from Tokyo, Karuizawa is a popular resort town at the foot of the active volcano Mt. Asama in Nagano Prefecture. Karuizawa has lots of sightseeing, with its mountains and forests holding waterfalls, hiking trails, lakes, ski slopes, and more. Plus, with a plethora of museums, historical churches, and retro hotels, there’s just as much cultural appeal too, along with a swathe of shopping areas packed with sought-after brands. In this article, we’ll introduce our picks for the best things to do in Karuizawa for the ultimate Karuizawa sightseeing itinerary!

1. Kumoba Pond [Roppontsuji]

To start things off, take a stroll on the promenade around Kumoba Pond (Kumoba-ike). It will take you around 20 minutes. As you may have already guessed, this small lake reaches its peak beauty in fall, when the red and yellow leaves double up with their reflection on the water surface. This gorgeous view will make the perfect cover for your Karuizawa travel photobook!

2. Shiraito Falls [Kose]

Due to the resemblance with a sequence of thin white threads dangling from the rocks, there are several waterfalls named "Shiraito" ("white thread" in Japanese) throughout Japan. Although, very few of them are as welcomingly large, beautifully arched, and easy to access as these ones in Karuizawa! Stretching out for 70m and gushing out of 3m-tall bare rocks, these waterfalls offer a different view each time of the year, so whenever you visit Karuizawa, save some time to see them!

Our Top Tips

JR Pass for Whole Japan

Explore Japan in the most convenient and economical way with a Japan Rail Pass! It is valid for the majority of railways and local buses operated by JR.

3. Regina Resort Kyukaruizawa [Kyu-Karuizawa]

You will naturally want to stay in a top-notch hotel when surrounded by the stunning nature scenery of Karuizawa. One recommended spot to spend the night is Regina Resort Kyukaruizawa, which is located in a tranquil vacation resort area that is quite popular among Japanese locals and allows visitors to spend a blissful time admiring the natural beauty of Karuizawa that changes with the seasons.

It’s in a prime location as it is just 10 minutes on foot from Kumoba Pond, a famous Karuizawa sightseeing spot prized for its stunning scenery of a pond surrounded by trees, as well as within walking distance of Kyu-Karuizawa Ginza, a shopping street that retains the nostalgic look of the past and is packed with eateries making use of local ingredients, souvenir shops, knickknack shops, and fashion boutiques.

The hotel is surrounded by an environment that lets you enjoy to the fullest the temperate climate and serene nature of Karuizawa, and the guest rooms are calming spaces imbued with the scent of wood. Furthermore, there are many 40 – 85 sq.m. rooms outfitted with stylish furniture, including a bed, sofa, and desk, which will let you relax in the room as if you are at home.

A special limited-time accommodation plan will be available only on the following dates! This is a popular hotel, so try to book as soon as you can. Jan. 26 (Sun) – Feb. 7 (Fri), 2020 (13 days) Feb. 24 (Mon) – 28 (Fri), 2020 (5 days)

If you'd rather compare and contrast multiple hotel options before deciding on the right one, check out our longer list of Karuizawa hotel recommendations here:

4. Former Usuitouge View Point [Toge-machi]

Grab your camera and go take a panoramic shot from Former Usuitouge View Point (Kyu Usui-toge Miharashidai), located at the border between Nagano and Gunma. Whether you take the bus or climb up there, for sunrise or sunset, the view of all those mountaintops, among which Mt. Asama and the Yatsugatake volcanic group, will leave you absolutely breathless!

5. Sengataki Fall [Nagakura]

Ever heard of "shinrin-yoku"? Recently trending on the web, this expression literally translates to "bathing in the forest", meant as a form of nature therapy. If you feel like trying that, head to Sengataki Fall (Sengataki), whose 20m make it the tallest drop waterfall in Karuizawa. Enjoy a light hike in the valley surrounded by water streams and vibrant ferns, through which blows a pleasant fresh wind.

6. Karuizawa Lake Garden [Nagakura]

Surrounded by a freshwater lake, this is a huge natural garden comprising 8 different areas and a whole lot of beautiful flowers and plants! In particular, head there in June to admire its many roses in full bloom, but know that the garden has so many species that it's beautiful and unique every other time of the year!

Among the various bridges, footpaths and facilities, make sure you stop by the Brasserie Nakagawa for a lunch break (reservation strongly recommended), or at one of the shops to buy some flower-related goods and souvenirs, or even some seedlings.

7. Karuizawa Yacho no Mori [Nagakura]

If you're after a place for wildlife encounters and bird-watching not far from Tokyo , Yacho no Mori (literally "wild birds' forest") is strongly recommended. There you can take a 2.5km hike through mountain streams, swamps, larches and acorns, with birds chirping as your background music.

If you want to fully experience the forest and its fauna, everyone recommends booking a guided tour, especially for safety reasons. In fact, among the wild animals you may bump into, many visitors reported feeling the presence or even actually coming across moon bears (white-chested black bears native to Asia)! Exciting as it may sound, you may want to carry a bell to keep them at a distance. Birdwatching hot tip: grab binoculars and go in winter, when the bare trees will allow you to spot the birds more easily!

8. Uchimura Kanzo Memorial Stone Church [Hoshino]

A jaw-dropping architectural wonder nestled in Karuizawa's vibrant nature. Composed by an alternate sequence of stone and glass arches of increasing size, through which the sunlight creates a solemn atmosphere, this uniquely designed structure will go down in history as a rare example of organic architecture, a building style that prioritizes balance with the surrounding nature. It's the perfect venue for weddings and other ceremonies, although the church has no religious symbols like crosses or altars. Kanzo Uchimura was a Japanese Christian philosopher and this place was dedicated to him by American architect Kendrick Kellogg.

9. Karuizawa Kogen Church [Nagakura]

Another marvellous church in Karuizawa surrounded by nature. Here, your Christian ceremony can be made even more unique and evocative thanks to a phenomenon known as "komorebi", which refers to when the sunlight filters through the trees creating a warm and soothing atmosphere.

Ceremonies are also enriched by live performances of organ and harp! According to the season, you'll find interesting events all year long, like a koyo (autumn leaves) light-up in fall, or the Candles Night on Christmas.

10. St. Paul's Catholic Church [Karuizawa]

This small wooden church in the old town was established in 1935 by a British priest and belongs to the Catholic Diocese of Yokohama. Designed by the architect Antonin Raymond, it has the typical triangular roof of chapels and churches of the Alps. Take a peek inside and you'll be amazed at the peaceful and warm atmosphere given by the wood interiors! If you're lucky enough, you may even witness a beautiful wedding.

11. Karuizawa Shaw Memorial Church [Karuizawa]

Keeping with the church theme, another one you shouldn't miss is the Shaw Memorial, which is an Anglican Church of the Diocese of Chubu. It sits in a tranquil grove of verdant trees you can get to through the lively Kyu-Karuizawa Ginza-Dori (Kyu-Karuizawa Ginza Street). The church was established in 1895 by Alexander Croft Shaw, a minister of the Anglican Church of Canada, and other than a statue of him, the premises also include his residence. The cozy wooden interiors and the crypt's stained-glass portraying sceneries of Karuizawa are just lovely!

If you find this series of Western-style churches in Japan fascinating and are looking for more, another possible destination is Nagasaki. Check out our intro article here:

12. Kumano Kotai Shrine [Toge-machi]

Should all those churches make you forget you're in an Asian country, get back in the Japanese mood by visiting this unique shrine. Located at 1,200m above sea level, on top of the Usui Pass, and embedded in Karuizawa's lush nature, what makes Kumano Kotai Shrine (Kumano Kotai Jinja) unusual, is that its premises are half Nagano and half Gunma Prefecture. Therefore, there are 2 priests with their own separate offices. There are also separate matsuri (festivals) for each prefecture. Combine your tour with a walk to the aforementioned Former Usuitouge View Point!

13. The Former Mikasa Hotel [Karuizawa]

Buildings like these are not something you see every day in Japan! That's why this lovely wooden structure, which used to be a hotel, was designated Important Cultural Property. Despite its pure western architectural style, it was entirely designed and built by Japanese hands in the late Meiji Era (1868 - 1912).

Both the outside and the interiors have the elegant traits of hotels of that period, with a lot of details thought to best suit the westerners' taste, as it was meant to house mainly foreign guests. Also ideal on a rainy day, the hotel can even be visited with a convenient ticket that combines with other attractions in Karuizawa.

14. Karuizawa Prince Shopping Plaza [Karuizawa]

Time for some shopping! This huge outlet area offers a large variety of brands that could keep you busy a whole day, or even 2. In fact, this is so much more than just a shopping center! First of all, the facilities are all new and fancy, scattered around a large area with a nice green lawn and a lake. Other than an extensive food court, with restaurants and cafes of all kinds, there's also a spa and other services exclusively for pets! Plus, it's super easy to access by train or bus!

15. Harunire Terrace [Hoshino]

One of the main attractions of Hoshino area is a wooden deck built in the middle of a forest of over 100 Japanese elms ("harunire") growing wild by the stream. Get some fresh air by strolling around 15 modern-style facilities, including a gallery, stylish restaurants, and shops!

During the cold season, it gets even more magical with the Christmas decorations and the large skating rink created by the frozen pond nearby. Stay after sunset and you may get to admire a stunning illumination of the terrace as well! Any season you go, note that it gets crowded in the weekend and the parking lots are limited, but it's definitely worth a shot!

16. Kyu-Karuizawa Ginza Street [Karuizawa]

The old town of Karuizawa is best represented by this lovely shopping area known as Kyu-Karuizawa Ginza Street. A lineup of historical shops and delicious restaurants makes the perfect destination for an afternoon stroll, as well as some souvenir shopping! Visited by millions of tourists every year, this is a key spot if you're interested in Karuizawa's past, both in terms of lifestyle and architecture.

17. Church Street Karuizawa [Karuizawa]

Despite its somewhat misleading name, Church Street is simply another shopping arcade. It owes its name to the fact that it leads to St. Paul, the most important church in Karuizawa, so it's recommended for a coffee or shopping break on your way to/from the church. It's a nice way to experience the contrast between the sacred and the non-sacred sides of Karuizawa. The 2-storied arcade hosts around 20 different stores selling food, fashion and miscellaneous goods.

18. Hiroshi Senju Museum Karuizawa [Nagakura]

Another great idea if the weather doesn't cooperate: museums! In case you're not familiar with him, Hiroshi Senju is a world-famous Japanese artist, and he designed this museum himself in collaboration with the architect Ryue Nishizawa as a representation of the harmony between art and nature in Karuizawa.

The bright and white-themed building runs along beautiful gardens with its sinuous glass walls creating a soul-soothing footpath, along which you can admire the greenery on one side and Senju's artworks on another. Do sit on the wavy sofas and take your time to contemplate the beauty. Inside you can also find a bakery/cafe and a shop!

19. Sezon Museum of Modern Art [Nagakura]

"Museums are for the human society what stick insects are for the ecosystem." This is how Sezon Museum of Modern Art chose to introduce itself, to point out how art contributes to develop a peaceful society, just like stick insects help the trees grow new leaves by eating the old ones.

Living in symbiosis with the surrounding nature, the museum hosts a wide collection of paintings ranging from major artists of the early 20th century, such as Paul Klee, Kandinsky and Pollock, to the newest creations of Japanese contemporary artists.

20. Karuizawa Picturebook Museum [Nagakura]

Complete your artistic tour with a visit to Karuizawa Picturebook Museum and dive into the world of Japanese illustration! The area is divided into multiple facilities, like the first exhibition hall in the above picture, scattered around a lovely 15,000 sqm English-style garden, which is sometimes chosen by newlyweds as their photo shooting set!

This is the second exhibition hall - isn't it adorable? Your visit will truly feel like a relaxing stroll in a fairytale, enchanting both children and grown-ups. There's also a library with plenty of picture books on sale and a cafe where you can stretch your legs and eat a sandwich.

Japan Shinkansen, Narita Express (N'EX) & Express Train Tickets

Plan ahead by booking your shinkansen, airport train, and express train tickets online in English. Have the tickets sent to you by mail or collect them at the station once you're in Japan.

21. Picchio Wildlife Research Center [Hoshino]

If you're a wildlife aficionado, this place will keep you occupied for days! Located in the furthermost area of Hoshino, Picchio is a research center dedicated to the local fauna that organizes related tours and events for people of all ages. Take on a fantastic adventure in the woods to observe flying squirrels, wild goats, and a large variety of local birds and insects.

The tours available change on a seasonal basis and can be both during the day and at night. You'll be provided binoculars for your nature watching tours, and flashlights if you go on a nocturnal tour. Just make sure to wear long sleeves and pants to prevent insect bites, and don't worry if it gets chilly: you can rent winter wear for free!

22. Karuizawa Prince Hotel Ski Resort [Karuizawa]

Being a mountain town, Karuizawa couldn't miss a ski area, so with a little bit of artificial snow they created a winter sports paradise! Smooth, safe and particularly recommended for beginners and children, the ski slope is not the only attraction of this area. There is also a scenic lift to get on the summit that will offer you a stunning view of the surroundings. Moreover, you can have a fun ride on an amazing zipline!

23. Karuizawa Taliesin [Nagakura]

This picture exudes peace and tranquility from head to toe, doesn't it? Welcome to Karuizawa Taliesin, an area around Shiozawa Lake (Shiozawa-ko) with plenty of facilities and attractions for all kinds of activities. This is Suikyuso, the villa where a famed Japanese novelist used to spend the summer.

Let the greenery soothe your soul while you stroll around art museums, villas full of history, lovely gardens, and delicious eateries. The above photo shows the Peynet Museum, where you can admire a collection of original works from a French illustrator. If you're tired of walking, hop on the cycle monorail or a swan boat to enjoy the view from a different (and even more romantic) perspective!

24. Tombo no Yu [Hoshino]

Every reputable tourist destination in Japan has its own version of onsen (hot springs). Tombo no Yu is a natural onsen facility whose abundant hot waters, supplied directly from the source, are highly beneficial for the skin. Designed with a Japanese minimalistic style, this bathhouse actually has colorful dragonflies (tombo, in Japanese) floating around the area. Don't miss the beautiful open-air bath (rotenburo) nestled among granite rocks and trees, to relax and recover from a day out trekking or sightseeing.

If you prefer a convenient hot springs-and-hotel experience, check out our list of 20 Japanese-style inns with hot springs in Karuizawa:

25. Karuizawa Sengataki Onsen [Nagakura]

Named after the above-mentioned Senga Falls, this is another valid option for onsen goers. If you find Tombo no Yu too crowded, you can drop by this day spa and pamper yourself with its soothing waters, instead. In fact, comprising 2 open-air baths, a large indoor bath, a Finnish sauna, and a cold bath, the space is relatively wide, allowing you to bathe and move around in complete relaxation, surrounded by flaming momiji in autumn or white fluffy snow in winter.

Karuizawa is a fantastic destination recommended for all types of tourists: families with kids, couples on a relaxing vacation, friends in search of adventure, and even history and art lovers. Use this article as a reference next time you get in the mood for a trip and you'll make the best of it!

karuizawa travel map

In 2023, the Yagasaki Park Fireworks Festival will take place at 7:30 pm on the 16th of August .

If you plan to visit Karuizawa with young children, there are playsets to keep them entertained. They will also love seeing the ducks and maybe even the ducklings that live in Yagasaki Park!

Tip: If you want to feed the ducks, check with the cafe in Karuizawa Ohga Hall (軽井沢大賀ホール) on the north side of the park. They might still be selling duck feeds.

The staff there are friendly. So if there is anything you are unsure about, talk to them!

Peeping into the workshop space where chocolate products are made through the shop’s glass panels is another reason that attracts tourists to Bon Okawa Karuizawa Chocolate Factory.

The Karuizawa Chocolate Ball (軽井沢チョコレートボール) is one of the most popular items sold at the chocolate factory. Amongst the six flavors, several are not commonly found on supermarket shelves. Of course, the apple flavor is a must-try because Nagano is an infamous apple-producing prefecture!

While many scenic natural spots are not usually close to a train station, Kumoba Pond in Karuizawa is just a 20-minute walk from Karuizawa Station! The spot that was nicknamed Swan Lake (スワンレイク) by Westerners is a place with a very calm atmosphere that you will surely love!

Watercress and other aquatic and wet plants can also be observed on the north side of the pond.

The best way to enjoy what Kumoba Pond has to offer is by strolling on the 1-km-long promenade around the pond. The promenade is flat, so even prams and wheelchairs can travel on the road. The view of white birch, larch, and maple trees reflected on the pond surface, with the occasional scene of the ducks swimming peacefully across, is perfect for destressing ourselves from the daily hustle and bustle. So even the Japanese imperial family would visit Kumoba Pond at least once during their stay in Karuizawa !

If you walk upstream from Kumoba Pond for about 10 minutes along the river, you will find clear water that springs out (=゚ω゚)ノ. This water source has been called Gozensui (御膳水) since the Edo period because it was used to prepare meals for the feudal lords and court nobles. The water was also used to cook Meiji Emperor’s lunch when he visited Karuizawa.

In addition, it is the hotel that John Lennon loved!

Unlike most hotels in Japan, the guestrooms in Mampei Hotel are elegant and spacious. The carefully prepared meals are decent too.

For more information, refer to our article on Mampei Hotel !

Towards the end of Old Karuizawa Ginza Street , there is a two-story shopping mall called Church Street. It is a “street” filled with around 20 cafes, restaurants, and boutique stores that leads to Karuizawa St. Paul’s Catholic Church . When events such as flea markets are not held in the courtyard, it is a nice space to take a break from all the shopping you might have done the last few hours. So if you love shopping, Church Street Karuizawa is definitely the spot that should be on your itinerary!

In addition to Uchimura Kanzō Memorial Stone Church (石の教会 内村鑑三記念堂) in Naka-Karuizawa ‘s Hoshino Area , another church that can excite architectural buffs is Karuizawa St. Paul’s Catholic Church. Designed by the famous American architect Antonin Raymond, the church is another landmark in Karuizawa .

It was where the first Christian wedding for non-Christians was held in Japan, and nowadays, a venue where many celebrities hold their weddings.

For more information about Karuizzawa St. Paul’s Catholic Church, refer to our Guide to the Must-Visit Churches in Karuizawa !

Beyond the Old Karuizawa Ginza Street , close to the Nitebashi Bridge in a forest, you will encounter Karuizawa’s oldest church. The church was renovated from the first villa built in Karuizawa , home of a Canadian Anglican missionary, Alexander Croft Shaw.

Shaw is well-respected in the area because not only did Shaw successfully spread Christianity in the area, but he was also the person who spread the name of Karuizawa to the world as a summer resort.

Karuizawa’s natural spots aren’t just about waterfalls and lakes. Driving up the Usui Pass, there is a park close to the summit at 1,200m. The observation deck in the park offers a spectacular panoramic view of the ragged mountain ranges close by, including Mt. Asama, Japan’s Southern Alps and the mountains of Nikkō. In addition, it is also the prefectural border line between Gunma and Nagano !

For more information about the lookout and a few more tourist spots close to it, refer to our article on the Usui Pass Observation Platform !

Kumanokōtai Shrine (熊野皇大神社)

Kumanokōtai Shrine, close to the Usui Pass Observation Platform, is a rare shrine you will want to visit. Not only does it sit on a prefectural borderline, but the central watershed (中央分水嶺) can also be found in the precinct! Because the shrine’s precinct is across two prefectures, the shrine consists of two religious institutions ( 宗教法人 ). The first half in Nagano Prefecture is Kumanokōtai Shrine, and the other half in Gunma Prefecture is Kumano Shrine. Each religious institution has its responsible person, shrine staff, donation box, and shrine office. This is why Kumanokōtai Shrine is designated as one of the four Special Shrine in Japan (特別神社).

Mikasa-dōri Street starting from the intersection close to Kyu-Karuizawa (旧軽井沢) bus stop to the Former Mikasa Hotel (旧三笠ホテル), is the perfect street to escape from the heat during the warmer season. It is also the road leading to Kose Onsen (小瀬温泉) and Karuizawa Shiraito Falls (白糸の滝) .

Once you pass through the commercial district, the 2km Mikasa-dōri Street is lined with tall larch that isn’t just scenic but blocks the strong summer sun, bringing you the coolness Karuizawa is known for.

karuizawa travel map

The street is flat and usually without much traffic, making it perfect for cycling. The fresh cool breeze that blew on our faces was just refreshing when we cycled along Mikasa-dōri in late September.

If you decide to take a stroll instead of cycling, you will notice the height difference between the left and right lanes. This higher lane was Kusakaru Electric Railway’s track that served between Kusatsu Onsen and Karuizawa in the first half of the 20th century.

Even if you visit Karuizawa in winter, venture out to Mikasa-dōri for some stunning photos!

Important: Former Mikasa Hotel is closed for renovation and repair work until 2025’s summer.

Karuizawa in Autumn with its Villa Architecture (Photo: PIXTA)

Nestled in Nagano Prefecture , Karuizawa is a charming little town on the outskirts of Tokyo. Situated at an elevation of 936 meters, its cool, pleasant climate makes it a popular summer retreat, offering respite from the heat. During the Meiji era (1868–1912), Karuizawa gained favor among Westerners for its cool weather and natural surroundings. They flocked to build churches, villas, and more, leaving a legacy of European-style architecture . Today, this blend of Western influence is evident in the town's numerous European-style buildings and shopping streets, creating an exotic atmosphere that continues to attract visitors. The captivating autumn foliage adds another layer of allure, and winter transforms the mountainous landscapes into an enchanting scene.

Karuizawa's tourism hub centers around the "Karuizawa" stations operated by JR and Shinano Railway. Taking the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Karuizawa Station takes approximately 1.5 hours (with prices around 5,490 yen for unreserved seats and 6,020 yen for reserved seats). It's a seamless journey with no transfers, making it convenient and quite speedy — perfect even for a day trip. For international tourists, there are cost-effective transportation passes available. Consider the "Tokyo Wide Pass" (15,000 yen for a 3-day pass for adults; 7,500 yen for children aged 6–11). It's a fantastic option for a quick two-day getaway or a day trip to places like Kawaguchiko or Nikko , making it well worth the investment!

Tabea Greuner

If you’re looking for a weekend getaway close to Tokyo, then Karuizawa should be at the top of your list. Hop on the shinkansen at Tokyo Station and you’ll reach this mountain town in Nagano prefecture in about 70 minutes.

The town is worth visiting year round, with plenty of activities to enjoy, ranging from golf, hiking and cycling in summer to skiing and ice skating in winter. It’s also a popular destination to enjoy the colourful autumn foliage.

In the late 19th century, Tokyo’s influx of foreign residents, including diplomats, scholars and even priests, began visiting Karuizawa as a summer resort due to its cool climate. You can still find a number of beautiful, cosy Western-style buildings and churches from that era around town.

To get an idea of all the things you can do in Karuizawa, check our best picks below.

Explore Karuizawa’s many churches

Explore Karuizawa’s many churches

When you walk towards the end of the Kyu-Karuizawa Ginza shopping street, you’ll find the small wooden Shaw Memorial Church . Karuizawa’s oldest church, it was built in 1895 and founded by the Canadian missionary and Anglican minister Alexander Croft Shaw. He popularised Karuizawa as a summer resort in the late 19th century and since then, a number of other churches have been built in the area.

Within the Karuizawa Hoshino area, you’ll find the wooden Karuizawa Kogen Church set inside a lush forest, as well as the Stone Church next to Hotel Bleston Court. The one-of-a-kind design made from stone and glass arches is designed to symbolise the mutual support between two people – as you might imagine, many couples hold their wedding ceremonies in Karuizawa’s beautiful churches.

Kumobaike Pond

Kumobaike Pond

Only a 15-minute walk from the Kyu-Karuizawa Ginza shopping street, you’ll find this beautiful pond lined by trees. It’s especially picturesque during autumn, when it’s surrounded by blazing red maple leaves and other autumn colours, which are reflected in the water’s surface. You can walk around the lake and see the autumn foliage from different perspectives. The best time to visit is between the end of October and early November.

The Museum of Contemporary Art, Karuizawa

The Museum of Contemporary Art, Karuizawa

A five-minute drive from Karuizawa Station, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Karuizawa is surrounded by lush nature. The building was once a recreation facility for the employees of a Japanese corporation, but was renovated and turned into an art attraction in 2008.

The museum specialises in world-renowned Japanese artists. Currently the main exhibition hall on the first floor showcases works by 20-plus Japanese contemporary artists including Yayoi Kusama, Takashi Murakami, Kohei Nawa and Ayako Rokkaku as well as rising star Yukimasa Ida. The second-floor gallery features woodblock prints and sculptures, which are available for purchase. There’s also a space for solo exhibitions, where you’ll find works by nihonga artist Shiori Yajima (until September 5) and copperplate engravings by Akiko Matsui (September 8-November 23).

The museum also operates a gift shop and a sweet treat is included in the entry fee.

2052-2 Nagakura, Karuizawa-machi, Kitasaku-gun, Nagano prefecture. 0267 31 5141. 10am-5pm (last entry 4.30pm), closed Tue & Wed (open during Golden Week & summer holidays); closed from end of Nov to mid-April. ¥1,000, university and high school students ¥800, junior high and primary school students ¥500, free for younger children.

Shiraito Waterfall

Shiraito Waterfall

Only a 23-minute bus ride from Karuizawa Station, the beautiful Shiraito Waterfall in the lush forest of Karuizawa measures 3m in height and 70m in width. The waterfall is made up of a number of white streams pouring down, resembling a curtain, hence its name, which can be translated as ‘waterfall of white threads’. The site is beautiful year round, with the waterfall surrounded by lush greenery in summer and colourful foliage in autumn. In winter, you can see lots of icicles around the site. Before heading back to Karuizawa Station, check out the little shops at the waterfall’s parking lot and try one of the specialities – a salt-grilled char fish (¥700).

Nagakura, Karuizawa-machi, Kitasaku-gun, Nagano prefecture

Karuizawa Prince Ski Resort

Karuizawa Prince Ski Resort

One of the most easily accessible ski resorts from Tokyo, the Karuizawa Prince Ski Resort opens its slopes annually in early November for about five months. During the early season, only a few slopes with man-made snow may be open, however, as soon as snow starts to fall in Karuizawa, all 16 runs are available for lots of winter fun. Ski and snowboard rental starts from ¥5,000 per 4 hours (primary school students and younger ¥4,000). The resort also offers ski and snowboard lessons for kids (ages four and up) and adults. A two-hour lesson costs ¥4,000.

There’s a shuttle bus running between Karuizawa Station and the ski resort multiple times daily, see here for the schedule. The current winter season ends on April 3.

Restaurants and cafés

Café Suzu no Ne

Café Suzu no Ne

This cosy café is located in the forest, just a short walk from the Kyu-Karuizawa shopping street. Suzu no Ne is open from 9am, and you can choose from four different breakfast options, such as a soup or quiche, while the lunch menu includes taco rice, pasta and curry dishes. However, we recommend the café’s french toast, topped with plenty of fruit.

The structure itself is a heritage listed building with a mysterious history. It’s not known exactly when it was built, but newspapers from the Meiji period (1868-1912) were found in the old structure during a renovation and the room layout is exactly the same as the summer residence of Alexander Croft Shaw, built in 1888. It’s also believed the building was relocated from the Kyu-Karuizawa shopping street to the forest at some point.

House 1138, 972 Kyu-Karuizawa, Karuizawa-machi, Kitasaku-gun, Nagano prefecture. 0267 31 6889. 9am-5pm, closed Wed. Note that Café Suzu no Ne is closed in winter.

Bakery and Restaurant Sawamura Kyu-Karuizawa

Bakery and Restaurant Sawamura Kyu-Karuizawa

Opened in 2015, Bakery and Restaurant Sawamura is the best address in town to get your hands on some freshly baked goodies. About 20 different types of domestic and imported flour are used based on each bread’s characteristics. Make sure to try the espresso bread that’s made with coarsely ground coffee beans, nuts, dried fruit and chocolate chips; or opt for the S-shaped baguette with chocolate chips and small red beans kneaded into the dough.

You can pick up your favourite treats at the bakery counter, or have a more substantial meal at the on-site restaurant. During lunch hours, we recommend trying one of the store’s hearty calzone pizzas.

12-8 Karuizawa, Karuizawa-machi, Kitasaku-gun, Nagano prefecture. 0267 41 3777. Bakery 8am-8pm, restaurant until 9pm (last orders 8pm) daily.

Cafe L'Opera

Cafe L'Opera

Located close to the Kyu-Karuizawa shopping street, the exterior of Cafe L'Opera is inspired by William Shakespeare’s birthplace. Inside, the British Tudor-style architecture, with dark wooden pillars, visible plaster and stained glass, blocks out the rest of the world – as soon as you step inside, it feels like time has stopped. The cakes are homemade with regional fresh fruit and vegetables. As for drinks, opt for the store’s royal milk tea. It’s extremely delicious and served in a beautiful Royal Copenhagen tea set.

12-7 Karuizawa, Karuizawa-machi, Kitasaku-gun, Nagano prefecture. 0267-42-7833. 10am-6pm, holidays vary, check website for details. Note that Cafe L'Opera is on winter break until mid-March.

The Ginza shopping street runs along the old Nakasendo route and is home to a large variety of local shops. You can find souvenirs, local specialities such as fresh fruit and jam, art galleries and more. Make sure to drop by Icchodo , a furniture shop that’s famous for its beautiful sakura -shaped wood carvings. You’ll also find the main store of Boulangerie Asanoya, a Tokyo bakery that opened its Karuizawa branch way back in 1944.

You’ll also find a number of cafés and food courts. Most other Karuizawa attractions close around 5pm, but Karuizawa Prince Shopping Plaza is usually open until around 8pm, so it’s a perfect place to visit in the evening. From November to March, the mall boasts a large illumination event with about 100,000 lights. You’ll have great views from the New East Deck, where the tree-shaped illuminations are reflected on the surface of the shopping centre’s large pond.

Accommodations

Mampei Hotel

Mampei Hotel

This beautiful classic Western-style hotel was established in 1894 and renamed the Mampei Hotel in 1896. The timber-framed exterior of its main building, built in 1936, resembles European half-timbered houses found in alpine regions. As soon as you step inside, it feels like travelling back in time – think retro furniture, stained glass, wooden ceilings and more. Mampei Hotel has modern guest rooms in its two annex buildings, but opt for a room in the main building to enjoy the fusion of Japanese and Western-style design. You’ll see glass shoji sliding doors, wooden furniture featuring Karuizawa’s sakura carvings, clawfoot bathtubs, tokonoma alcoves and more.

Several famous people have stayed at the hotel, including musician John Lennon, his wife Yoko Ono, and their daughter, who visited every summer. His room is the most popular in the main building  (tip: it’s room No 128).

You don’t have to stay at the hotel to take in some retro vibes. You can just visit the café terrace and enjoy a piece of traditional apple pie and a cup of royal milk tea, using a recipe provided by John Lennon himself. There’s also a little museum with lots of old photographs and furniture as well as Lennon’s old piano.

925 Karuizawa, Karuizawa-machi, Kitasaku-gun, Nagano prefecture. 0267 42 1234.

Hoshinoya Karuizawa

Hoshinoya Karuizawa

Hoshinoya Karuizawa resort village features a number of luxury apartments within the area’s vast natural surroundings. You can choose from three room types, Mizunami, Yamaroji and Niwaroji. Mizunami (pictured above) is the most popular, featuring modern and spacious guesthouses centred around a small pond. Each guesthouse has a terrace that’s perfect for relaxing or enjoying a meal. Come night, paper lanterns float on the water’s surface, turning the resort into a magical hideaway.

Make sure to enjoy a meal at the hotel restaurant Kasuke . Opt for a multi-course kaiseki meal, which features beautifully arranged dishes made from the freshest seasonal produce of the region.

Only 60 minutes away from Tokyo, Karuizawa is an international highland resort that stays cool even during the summer. Its atmospheric shopping streets, museums and cafes are surrounded by lush forests and mountains. Take in the fresh air of the countryside while shopping or dining, cycling through wooded streets, or visiting tranquil ponds and waterfalls.

The History of Karuizawa

For centuries, Karuizawa has been connected to Tokyo by the Nakasendo Trail. Travelers would often stay at one of the two post towns here, Oiwake-juku and Karuizawa-juku, on their journey between the capital and the city of Kyoto.

While the trail eventually fell into disuse, the area itself was rediscovered in the late 1800s as an escape from the sweltering heat of the city. Influential members of Tokyo society began building villas around Karuizawa, and before long it became the international resort it is known as today.

karuizawa travel map

The man credited with popularizing the area was a Canadian missionary, Alexander Croft Shaw. A church dedicated to him can be found at the end of the Kyu-Karuizawa Ginza Shopping Street, with his Karuizawa home located behind it.

Where to Go in Karuizawa

The karuizawa prince shopping plaza.

karuizawa travel map

Directly outside of Karuizawa Station, you’ll find the Karuizawa Prince Shopping Plaza. Adjacent are the Karuizawa Prince Ski Resort and Karuizawa Prince Hotel. From the station, buses connect you to the other main areas of Karuizawa: Kyu-Karuizawa and Naka-Karuizawa.

The Karuizawa Prince Shopping Plaza is one of the main destinations for visitors in Karuizawa. It has over 220 outlet shops in a tranquil natural setting. Centered around a large grassy lawn and pond, the plaza is a great place for shopping or just relaxing in the outdoors.

The Karuizawa Prince Ski Resort is right next to the shopping center and is open for the winter season from November to the end of March.

Kyu-Karuizawa’s Shopping and Sightseeing

In Kyu-Karuizawa is Karuizawa’s former main street, which runs along the old Nakasendo Trail. Many bakeries, cafes and souvenir shops line the street leading up towards Usui Pass. Notable buildings here include the Shaw Memorial Chapel , built in honor of Alexander Croft Shaw, the Kyu-Mikasa Hotel, one of the oldest standing western style hotels in Japan, and the Manpei Hotel, often frequented by John Lenin during his stays in Karuizawa.

Naka-Karuizawa

Naka-Karuizawa lies in the woods to the west of Karuizawa Station. Along the Yugawa River here, you’ll find Hoshino Resort, the Harunire Terrace, the Keraike Skating Rink, several hot springs, and the Picchio outdoor center . Architecture buffs will also enjoy the Stone Church.

Further Afield

There’s more to see in Karuizawa beyond the town itself.

Shiraito Falls

karuizawa travel map

Shiraito Falls is one of Karuizawa’s main symbols. While the falls are only 3 meters tall, they span an arch of 70 meters across. Groundwater spills over the arch in delicate, silky strands. Verdant greenery surrounds the falls, and in autumn the leaves turn brilliant shades of orange.

The falls are 20 minutes by bus from Karuizawa Station.

Komoro Castle Ruins Park

karuizawa travel map

In the neighboring town of Komoro is Komoro Castle Ruins Park . While the castle itself is gone, its labyrinthian stone walls remain. In spring, cherry blossoms bloom around the park, and in autumn, the surrounding woods show exquisite fiery colors.

Onioshidashien

karuizawa travel map

An otherworldly landscape of lava rock at the base of Mt. Asama, the result of a volcanic eruption here hundreds of years ago. Small patches of hardy green shrubbery have taken hold among the pumice here like natural bonsai trees. In the middle of the park is a crimson and white temple, dedicated to appeasing the volcano's wrath.

Onioshidashien Park is 40 minutes away from Karuizawa Station by bus.

How to Get to Karuizawa

By train and bus.

The easiest way to get to Karuizawa from Tokyo is to take the Hokuriku Shinkansen train from Tokyo Station. The train reaches Karuizawa Station in just 60 to 70 minutes.

Express buses are available from Shinjuku and Ikebukuro stations to Karuizawa Station, taking about 3 hours.

It takes about 2.5 hours to drive to Karuizawa from Tokyo by car (depending on traffic). The closest exit is the Usui Karuizawa IC exit on the Joshin'etsu Expressway, about 35 minutes away from Karuizawa Station.

Long popular with Japanese, Karuizawa is now coming to the attention of international visitors who have discovered all that it has to offer. While it won’t appeal to everyone, the expansive Prince Shopping Plaza offers some of Japan’s best retail therapy and high-end accommodation at the adjoining Prince Hotels. In winter, visitors can also enjoy Karuizawa Prince Snow Resort – a combination that attracts an increasing number of visitors over the Christmas and New Year Period. Just north of the station, the Old Ginza area is the traditional heart of the town and where you will find boutique shops, fine dining, bars and other lovely surprises. Offering a quaint charm in contrast to the modern commercialism of the shopping plaza, this area of Karuizawa also boasts some fantastic ‘ryokan’ (traditional guesthouses).

Autumn is an especially good time of year to visit, when the streets and surrounding forests of Karuizawa are awash with colour. To the west of the station and Old Ginza area, you can enjoy the popular Harunire Terrace and the walking trails of the Karuizawa Wild Bird Sanctuary – an ideal place to escape the summer heat or enjoy the autumn leaves from late-September to November.

Lying on the southern boundary of Joshinetsu Kogen National Park, Karuizawa is an ideal point from where to explore Japan’s fourth largest national park or to head west to nearby Ueda and Bessho Onsen – one of Nagano’s most historic cities and its oldest hot spring town. As the former stronghold of the legendary Sanada clan, Ueda is a place of true historic significance, nostalgic charm, traditional food and craft along with some of Nagano’s best ‘onsen’ (hot springs). All of these options are more are discussed below but let’s get started with the most obvious question…

WHERE IS KARUIZAWA?

Karuizawa is located around 70KM / 1.5 to 2-hours to the south-east of Nagano and 170KM / 2.5 hour drive to the north-west of Tokyo. As a stop on the Hokuriku Shinkansen line, Karuizawa Station is most easily reached using the train from Nagano or Tokyo – taking around 30-minutes and 65 to 75-minutes respectively, from those staring points. Karuizawa sits around 1000 metres above sea level, blessing it with a cool alpine climate and welcome escape from the heat and humidity of summer. As such, Karuizawa is one of Japan’s most popular resort towns with many Tokyoites heading there for holidays or day-trips from the capital. The town boasts some excellent hotels and guesthouses, restaurants and cafes, shopping, museums and galleries and sits within easy reach of Joshinetsu Kogen National Park and one of Japan’s most famous hot spring towns, Kusatsu Onsen .

BEST THINGS TO DO AROUND KARUIZAWA

Karuizawa is one of Japan’s most famous resort towns offering lots of reasons to visit. Within easy reach of Tokyo, both Japanese and international visitors flock to Karuizawa to enjoy its cool alpine climate, shopping, restaurants, museum, galleries and array of great accommodation. Sitting on the boundary of the Joshinetsu Kogen National Park, visitors headed to Karuizawa can also enjoy nearby destinations including Mount Asama, Mount Kusatsu-Shirane and multiple hot spring towns including Kusatsu Onsen. Here are our suggestions of the best things on offer in Karuizawa:

1 / PRINCE SHOPPING PLAZA / all year round

Prince Shopping Plaza in Karuizawa is one of Japan’s largest outlet shopping malls, offering a huge range of fashion and other goods to the public at wholesale factory prices. The mix of shops on offer is somewhat eclectic too. Big name brands such as Adidas, Coach and Disney sit alongside local fashion labels, handmade goods and souvenir stores.

There’s also no shortage of food and drink options too, with Chinese, European and Japanese restaurant options joining the obligatory coffee shops, delis and cafes. Tourists will also be glad to know that many of the stores in Prince Shopping Plaza allow tax free shopping and accept all major credit cards. Paying by credit card can sometimes be problematic in what is still very much a cash-based society here in Japan. The Plaza also has an onsite currency exchange making it easy to get hold of Japanese yen if you need to.

2 /  OLD KARUIZAWA GINZA SHOPPING STREET / all year round

Whilst the Prince Shopping Plaza offers the very best in modern conveniences, maybe you’re looking for something a little more ‘old school’ and authentic? If that’s the case, then you need look no further than Old Karuizawa Ginza Shopping Street . Whilst much of Karuizawa has undergone a certain level of renewal and urbanization in recent times, the Ginza Shopping Street has, thankfully, remained unspoiled. Indeed the street continues to enjoy international recognition to this day, thanks to the vote of confidence it received from The Beatles’ John Lennon, when he visited it during one of his many trips to Japan alongside his partner Yoko Ono. However, you don’t need to be one of the all-time legends of popular music to enjoy this charming little area. Among the handicraft shops, various other homemade goods and local fashion stores, you will also find some great little cafes, where you can sit back, relax and “imagine” a world of possibilities.

3 / HARUNIRE TERRACE / all year round

Located in Naka-Karuizawa, approximately 4km to the west of the town centre, Harunire Terrace is a small and stylish dining and shopping area surrounded by picturesque forest. Restaurants and boutique stores run parallel to each other along a wooden terrace. The overall design of Harunire Terrace embraces the use of timber, allowing it to blend into its natural setting with ease. A range of food and craft shops complement restaurants and cafes, with walking trails leading to nearby Hoshino Onsen Tombo-no-Yu and Karuizawa Wild Bird Sanctuary – see below. Always popular, restaurants can be busy on weekends and holidays so it’s worth going early if you can.

4 / HOSHINO ONSEN TOMBO-NO-YU / all year round

The healing and health-boosting qualities of the legendary ‘onsen’ (hot springs) are known all across Japan. Hoshino Onsen Tombo-no-Yu in Naka-Karuizawa is a relatively new addition to this legend, with these springs only being used by the locals since 1916. However, their hydrogen carbonate and chloride enthused waters are said to help alleviate a whole range of human ills, from arthritis to headaches, to nerves and anxiety. In any case, as this writer will testify, nothing refreshes both the body and the spirit quite like a good long soak in an onsen. Tombo-no-Yu offers both indoor and outdoor baths, with admission JPY1300 for adults and JPY750 for children.

5 / KARUIZAWA WILD BIRD SANCTUARY / all year round

Located next to Hoshino Onsen Tombo-no-Yu, Karuizawa Wild Bird Sanctuary is an open forested area of around 100 hectares, criss-crossed by walking trails and home to at least one hundred species of birds. The trails of the sanctuary can be enjoyed free-of-charge with tours The Visitors Center includes the Picchio Wildlife Research Center and operates guided tours including a two-hour ‘Nature Watching Tour’ from April to November, a ‘Giant Flying Squirrels Tour’ in the evening from March to November and a ‘Mountain Bike Tour’ from spring to mid-summer (fees apply). Tours are delivered in Japanese with English-interpreters available at an additional fee meaning that for international visitors, the sanctuary will be most appealing as a destination to wander and explore for yourself. Birdlife includes native pheasants, woodpeckers, wagtails, owls and more while the forests are known for their population of large ‘flying squirrels’ and other animals including deer and ‘kamoshika’ (Japanese serow).

6 /  SHIRAITO FALLS / best: May to November

Shiraito Falls is a three meter high waterfall, spanning some seventy meters across. The name ‘Shiraito’ literally translates into English as ‘White Threads’ which is quite appropriate when you see how the wispy, white waters of the falls mingle and coalesce as they fall into the lake below. The falls are open to the public all year round, but it is debatable as to when is actually the best time to go there. Many say that summer is the best, when the lush vegetation surrounding the falls is at its peak while others prefer the coloured beauty of autumn. There is a direct bus that leaves every 30 minutes or so from Karuizawa Station and takes about 25 minutes to reach the falls. Get off at Shiraito no Taki bus stop and the falls are about 5 minutes away on foot.

7 / KUMODA POND / best: May to November

Located nearby the Old Ginza area of town and around 20-minutes walk from Karuizawa Station, Kumoda Pond is one of the best spots in town to enjoy the autumn leaves. On a clear and calm day, Kumoda Pond offers a striking mirroring effect when the surrounding greenery is reflected in the pond’s clear and unspoiled waters. The entire pond is also encircled with a boardwalk, making this the perfect place to enjoy a peaceful summer stroll, or perhaps pull up a chair and take some time out from the stresses and strains of daily life. The pond is also popular with cyclists and nature lovers. If you’re lucky, one of the families of ducks who call the lake their home may even come over to say hello.

8 / ENJOY ‘KOYO’ IN AUTUMN / late-September to November

Known as ‘koyo’ in Japanese, autumn leaves are cherished for their fleeting and fragile beauty in a manner much like cherry blossoms. Karuizawa is one of the best spots in Central Japan to enjoy the leaves, which thanks to the town’s higher elevation at around 1000 metres above sea level, come earlier than most other areas. Our ‘Autumn Leaves’ main page has some tips and suggestions of where to find the best leaves across the region. For visitors headed to Karuizawa, we suggest starting at Shiraito Falls and Kumoda Pond – as described above.

9 / KARUIZAWA SNOW RESORT / November to March

Did you know that Karuizawa is the only town in the world to have hosted events at both Summer and Winter Olympic Games? Having hosted equestrian events during 1964 Tokyo Games and curling during the 1998 Nagano Games, Karuizawa has a quiet but proud Olympic heritage, something that can be celebrated at its small ski resort Karuizawa Prince Hotel Snow Resort is a small resort well-suited to beginners wanting to enjoy the snow. The resort’s ten trails breakdown as 50% beginner, 30% intermediate and 20% expert but in reality, this resort is really a playground for newbies and families. If you’re an intermediate or advanced skier or boarder, this isn’t the resort for you and you’d be better-suited heading to one of Nagano’s other many great resorts including Shiga Kogen Ski Resort . It is also worth noting that Karuizawa Snow Resort doesn’t receive the deep powder or boast the reliable conditions of many other Nagano resorts, often relying on snow-making machinery to keep the runs open. But if you’re a beginner, family or just looking for a quick run on the slopes, the resort is open from November to March and only 5-minutes drive from Karuizawa Station.

10 / KIDS SNOW FUN AREA / November to March

Operated by the Prince Hotel group, Karuizawa Snow Resort offers a ‘Snow Kids initiative’ to attract families. As well as offering free ski-lift access to kids under the age of thirteen, the resort also offers a variety of games and events geared towards younger skiers throughout the year. If you’re lucky, you might even get to meet Tonakky, Karuizawa Ski Resort’s ample-antlered mascot! For an additional fee, the resort also offers specialized children’s ski lessons. Advance booking is recommended.

11 / CYCLING AROUND KARUIZAWA / best: May to November

If Karuizawa has any great attributes to recommend to city-dwellers, it is the remarkably clean air, and the freshness that comes with being immersed in nature. With this in mind, perhaps one of the best ways to get around town is to get on your bike, literally! Karuizawa, with its setting at the base of Mount Asama, offers some brilliant cycling routes. Around Karuizawa Station you will find a number of bicycle rental shops, with very fairly priced hourly and daily rates. Karuizawa’s slightly more elevated position in relation to the surrounding area also means it is noticeably cooler, even in the heat of summer, with the gentle breeze being a very pleasant counter to all the heat and humidity.

12 / GOLF IN KARUIZAWA / May to November

The lush surrounds and cool climate of Karuizawa make it ideal for golf, and as such, the area boasts more than a dozen courses. The undisputed jewel in the crown here is Karuizawa Golf Club, which has even hosted national championship events in the past. However, it is an exclusive membership, and with less than 10,000 rounds played at the course each year, you could face a bit of trouble getting in! Thankfully there are also a number of equally enjoyable public golf courses dotted around the area. Perhaps the best of these can be found at the Karuizawa 72 Golf Resort, which offers six different courses of varying difficulty. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a mini-golf veteran looking to step up, Karuizawa has a course for you.

13 / HIROSHI SENJU MUSEUM / all year round

One of multiple galleries and museums in Karuizawa, the Hirosthi Senju Museum profiles the work of the eponymous artist, known for his paintings of cascading waterfalls and misted-laden cliffs. A popular artist in the Japanese corporate world and from a prominent Tokyo family, Senju’s art captivates some viewers while the repetitive nature of his work leaves some viewers uninspired. Set within a beautiful building designed by architect Nishizawa Ryue, exhibition spaces are bright yet tranquil, with a strong sense of contemplation and flow between galleries.

14 / ONIOSHIDASHI VOLCANIC PARK / all year round

Have you ever wondered what the aftermath of a volcanic eruption looks like? Well, the answer is something like Onioshidashi Volcanic Park . In 1783, the nearby Mount Asama erupted violently. Covering the entire area in a thick layer of lava, ash and molten rock. In time, as these elements cooled, they formed the rough, jagged terrain that characterizes Onioshidashi Park today. Volcanic rocks formed from the sediment of the 1783 Asama eruption give the park an appearance that looks less like a conventional Japanese nature reserve and more like the kind of rocky landscape one would expect to see on a “Star Trek” away mission to some strange, new world. From this elevated viewpoint, visitors can also enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding towns and villages.

In the center of the park, you will also find a shrine to the goddess Kannon, said to bestow mercy on those in her care. The shrine was built in the hope that it will protect the locals from any further eruptions from Mount Asama. Two hundred years on, and, fingers crossed, it seems to have done the trick so far! Mt. Asama is an active volcano and your personal safety should be your first priority . The Japan Meteorological Agency provides real-time advice and warnings for the entire country. Prior to visiting Asama/Onioshidashi Park, we recommend checking the following website .

15 / OIWAKE-JUKU / best: May to November

During the Edo Period, Japan also had these trading routes that crossed the entirety of the country. Oiwake-juku, in Karuizawa, is what was known at the time as a ‘post town’, a place where these trade routes met and diverged. As such, many traders, travellers, military officers or government officials of the time would stop over at Oiwake-juku before continuing on to either Zenko-ji Temple to the north, or the Sea of Japan coastline to the west. The remnants of the road remain today and offer a pleasant stroll back in time with a couple of nice cafes, bakeries and restaurants nearby.

16 / WALK THE USUI TOGE TRAIL / best: May to November

There are many great hiking trails throughout the Shinshu region of Japan. However, there aren’t many that span two prefectures. Traversing Gunma and Nagano Prefectures, The Usui Toge Trail is such a route. In the days before Shinkansen trains or highway buses, The Usui Toge Trail formed part of the main trade route connecting Nagano and Gunma with Tokyo and Yokohama to the south east.

In time, as Japan modernized towards the end of the 19 th century, The Usui railway line was built, connecting Yokokawa in Gunma with Karuizawa in Nagano. The line was closed almost a quarter of a century ago, but the trail endures, and indeed with trains no longer an issue, it is a hiking trail that continues to grow in popularity day by day. Along the trail, why not stop off at the Usui Line Railway Heritage Museum to look back on the history of the line and perhaps even have a go at driving an electric train yourself.

17 / KUSATSU ONSEN / all year round

Around 45KM / 60-minutes drive from Karuizawa Station, Kusatsu Onsen is one of Japan’s most famous hot spring towns. Located just over the border into Gunma Prefecture, Kusatsu Onsen is centred around its iconic ‘yubatake’. Translating as ‘hot water field’, the yubatake is large open-air area over which thermal water runs along timber troughs. In doing so, the incredibly hot volcanic water cools to a temperature that allows it to be used in the town’s many bathhouses.

25 Things to Do Around Kusatsu Onsen & Where to Stay

One of Japan’s most famous hot spring towns, Kusatsu Onsen sits high in the…

The eagle-eyed among you will notice that each of the baths has a slightly different water. Some are cloudy, others are clear. This is due largely to the biodiversity found on Mount Kusatsu-Shirane, from where the waters in these baths are derived. Each bath has its own unique blend of minerals and are said to help with a wide range of ailments. According to local legends, the only thing these magical baths can’t cure is a broken heart!

18 /  Shiga Kusatsu Kogen Route / June to November

Open from May to mid/late-November, the Japanese National Route 292, otherwise known as the Shiga Kusatsu Kogen Route is a scenic alpine driving route that winds through the Joshinetsu Kogen National Park. Running from Kusatsu Onsen toward the Jigokudani Monkey Park an up through Shiga Kogen Ski Resort, the route offers visitors stunning views of scenic vistas including Mt Shirane, Mt Yokote and other scenic areas deep into the national park, as well as convenient access between these two amazing locations in Central Japan from the comfort of your own vehicle or from private transport!

19 / JOSHINETSU KOGEN NATIONAL PARK / best: June to November

Mount Shirane lies within Joshinetsu Kogen National Park – the fourth largest national park in Japan. An area that also includes Mount Asama, the park boasts multiple ski areas within its boundary, fantastic hiking trails, a wealth of alpine flora and fauna, and on its western border, the Jigokudani Monkey Park. As the southern gateway to the park, Karuizawa is an ideal launching point from where to explore its beautiful landscapes, something most easily done by renting your own car once you arrive at Karuizawa. While the park can be enjoyed all year round, mid-November to April sees heavy snow blanket the area as the ski resorts enjoy Nagano’s longest seasons. If you want to hike or explore by car, best to do so from June to early November when the snow will mostly have melted.

20 / SHIGA KOGEN SKI RESORT / late-November to April

Nestled within the national park, Shiga Kogen is Japan’s largest and highest ski resort , boasting an unmatched expanse of interconnected terrain and Nagano’s longest ski season. Comprising 18 ski areas and between 90 to 100 courses (depending on how you count them) the entire resort is covered by an all-mountain pass and best enjoyed on a multi-day visit. Shiga’s ski fields lie between 1340 and 2307 metres and as such, are notably higher than any other resort in the region.

Having hosted events during the 1998 Winter Olympic Games, Shiga Kogen hasn’t seen much development in recent years. While some areas look a little tired and are in need of updating, the resort retains its Japanese and distinctly local character. But don’t count on that remaining the case. Winter 2020/21 will bring the opening of the new ‘Pulse’ Gondola at Shiga Kogen Yamanoeki (Mountain Station), a sign that things are changing and the resort is about to become a whole lot more popular as more and more people discover Shiga Kogen – Japan’s largest and highest ski resort.

21 / JIGOKUDANI MONKEY PARK / all year round

As the unofficial mascots of Nagano Prefecture, there are few things in nature more heart-warming than the site of the ever-adorable snow monkeys, soaking in their hot onsen baths to get a temporary respite from the cold winter chills. The Jigokudani Monkey Park offers the perfect opportunity for visitors to see these wonderful creatures up close and personal in their own habitat. Unlike many other nature reserves or safari parks, you can freely move amongst the monkeys and see how they go about their daily lives in this beautifully unspoiled landscape.

Want to visit the park on a guided tour? We offer both group and private tours all year round and can arrange a visit to the monkeys in combination with other great destinations, accommodation and restaurants. For more information, see ‘Book With Us! Nagano’s No.1 Tour & Charter Operator’ below .

22 / EXPLORE ZENKO-JI TEMPLE / all year round

40 Things to Do Around Nagano & Where to Stay

Lying in the centre of Honshu, Japan’s largest island, Nagano is the countr…

One of Nagano’s most famous landmarks, and indeed it was the root from which Nagano City itself sprouted from the Temple’s 7 th century foundation onwards, Zenko-ji Temple is considered a national treasure of Japan. The Temple is dedicated to the Amida Buddha and also houses a statue of the legendary healer Binzuru. According to local beliefs, if you or someone you care about has an illness or ailment, you should say a prayer to the statue, located in the Zenko-ji Hon-Do (the main building at the rear of the temple complex). After offering prayers, you should touch the part of the body affected by the ailment on Binzuru’s statue. For example, if you’re suffering migraines, touch his head. In addition to Binzuru, there are a host of other beautiful and rare artefacts to view across the Temple complex, and a wide selection of events taking place throughout the year.

23 / MYOGI SHRINE / all year round

Many of Japan’s great shrines are enchanting not just as beautifully constructed monuments themselves, but also for the stunning landscapes that often form their backdrops. Myogi Shrine , located on the outskirts of Tomioka City is such a place. The Shrine is set against some absolutely stunning mountain and forest terrain. The Shrine is especially worth a visit in the autumn, from mid-October to late November when the leaves take on that beautiful blend of brown, red and golden colours. One of the Shrine’s most striking features is the rock gates, carved out of the mountain itself, which offer a rugged and unconventional welcome to the shrine itself.

24 /  GUNMA SAFARI PARK / best: May to November

Also in Tomioka City, you will find Gunma Safari Park . The safari park offers visitors the chance to see over one hundred different species of animal. From small rodents to huge elephants. Familiar favourites such as tigers, giraffes and of course monkeys also feature prominently. Whilst you have the option of bringing your own car to tour the park, if you don’t want to risk the paintwork on your pride and joy the park also offers bus tours. Specialist off-road vehicles are also available on site that allow you to get a closer view of the park’s residents. There is also a small amusement park and ferris wheel on site for families to enjoy.

25 / CHERRY BLOSSOMS OF NAGANO / late-March to April

Ueda Castle & Yanagimachi

Built in 1583 by Sanada Masayuki, Ueda Castle is renowned as the fortification …

Blooming each year in Nagano from late-March through April, cherry blossoms are a quintessential part of Japanese life and synonymous with spring. Known as ‘sakura’ in Japanese, the flowers are appreciated for their fleeting and fragile beauty that people gather in parks and other venues to enjoy together with drinks, food and lots of chat. Karuizawa has multiple areas where you can enjoy ‘hanami’ (flower-viewing) however the best nearby venue is without question Ueda Castle Park. Located in the heart of Ueda City – less than 20 minutes from Karuizawa when using the Hokuriku Shinkansen – Ueda Castle Park sits on the foundation walls and expansive inner grounds of the former castle; an area that is today populated by hundreds of cherry trees. The park hosts its own blossom festival with thousands of visitors flocking their each day while the flowers are in bloom, to wander and sit below the trees, and enjoy the company of friends and family well into the evening. Ueda Castle Park always draws big crowds, especially on evenings and weekends, so be sure to scout out a good spot early if you plan to go.

26 / VISIT UEDA INC. UEDA CASTLE PARK / all year round

25 Things to Do Around Ueda / Bessho Onsen & Where to Stay

Conveniently located between Nagano and Karuizawa, Ueda and the nearby hot …

As the former stronghold of the legendary Sanada clan, Ueda is a place of true historic significance and any visit to Ueda begins at Ueda Castle Park – where visitors can walk in the shadow of the fearsome samurai that fought and repelled the equally legendary Tokugawa clan. To this day, Ueda Castle Park is in every sense the heart of the city and while the original castle no longer stands, the expansive park includes reconstructions of the East Gate and their defensive turrets.

Visitors wanting to delve into the legend of the Sanada clan should make an effort to head to Ueda on the last Saturday of April for the ‘Ueda Sanada Festival’ . A spectacular celebration of the lauded samurai, the festival runs through the day – from 09:30 to 16:00 – and features hundreds of participants dress in period costumes with displays of gunnery, sword-fighting and ‘taiko’ drumming drawing thousands of visitors to the castle park to watch a brilliant historical display. For more information about everything on offer, see our ’25 Things to Do Around Ueda / Bessho Onsen & Where to Stay’ page .

27 / ENJOY THE NOSTALGIA OF YANAGIMACHI / all year round

From the castle park, visitors can enjoy a leisurely 10 minute walk to the historic street of Hokkoku Kaido Yanagimachi or simply, ‘Yanagimachi’. Once part of the Hokkoku Kaido – an important trade route linking Ueda to Nagano and Niigata – Yanagimachi remains in a beautiful state of preservation thanks to the effort of local residents to retain the historic character of the street. Traditional merchant shops line the street, housing a range of stores and eateries including Okazaki Sake Brewery, Takeda Miso Brewery Hishiya, Bakery Levain and Co. Labo Shop along with soba restaurants, cafes and more. Much more than just a dining and shopping street, Yanagimachi is a great destination for keen photographers or anyone wanting a glimpse of the Japan that once was.

28 / THE TRADITIONS & TASTES OF UEDA / all year round

While it might be the legend of the Sanada samurai that attracts many people to visit Ueda, once there, they discover a city brimming with nostalgic charm and plenty of quiet delights. From the castle itself to the historic district of Yanagimachi, Ueda’s traditional character is retained through the passionate involvement of the community, with merchant stores selling local cuisine, local sake and crafts including ‘Ueda Tsumugi’ silk and wooden ‘Okopa Ningyo’ dolls. From Yanagimachi, visitors can stroll into the Fukuromachi district, an area known for its Showa Period (1926-1989) charm including its beloved Ueda Eigeki cinema and onto the traditional sweets of Iijima Shoten and other quaint reminders of yesteryear before riding the scenic Bessho Line to Nagano’s oldest hot spring town, Bessho Onsen. This is one destination where it pays to go slow and walk the streets with camera in-hand to happen upon quaint reminders of the Japan that once was, alive and thriving today.

29 / HOT SPRINGS & TEMPLES OF BESSHO ONSEN / all year round

Located around 60 minutes by train from Karuizawa or only 30 minutes by train from Ueda, Bessho Onsen lays claim to being the oldest hot spring town in Nagano . Known as ‘onsen’ in Japanese, natural hot springs play a fundamental role in the story of Japan and daily life for many people. Bessho Onsen is blessed with multiple onsen sources feeding its many hotels, guesthouses and a couple of public hot springs. Bessho Onsen is a small town that can easily be explored on-foot including notable temples such as Anraku-ji and its celebrated pagoda, Joraku-ji and Kitamuki Kannon Temple.

This is a destination where you take it slow – that’s the pace of life in Bessho – with the emphasis on soaking your soul in its famous baths. Highly-photogenic and always charming, spending a day or night in Bessho Onsen offers one of Nagano’s best hot spring experiences.

30 / SUGADAIRA KOGEN SNOW RESORT / December to April

Visitors heading to Karuizawa and looking for a large ski resort within easy reach of Karuizawa Station should consider heading to Sugadaira Kogen Snow Resort . Substantially larger than Karuizawa Ski Resort and offering outstanding alpine views, Sugadaira is located around 60 minutes by bus from Ueda Station which itself less than 20 minutes by train from Karuizawa. As such, the resort is within 1.5 hours of Karuizawa. Sugadaira Kogen sits between 1270 to 1580 metres and offers visitors 175 hectares of terrain and 36 courses. Divided into three areas – Taro, Davos and Pine Beak – Sugadaira doesn’t receive the legendary snowfall of other Nagano resorts including Nozawa Onsen and Hakuba, but thanks to its elevation the snow that it does receive stays in condition giving it a long season. Well-suited to beginners and lower-intermediate skiers and boarders, Sugadaira Kogen Snow Resort is a good option for anyone looking for more space and better snow than Karuizawa while also wanting to escape the crowds of Nagano’s more popular ski resorts.
