Exercise increased caution

Exercise increased caution  in the United States due to the threat of terrorism (level 2 of 4).

Terrorism The United States Department of Homeland Security regularly issues terrorism-related advice and updates. For current alerts, see the US National Terror Advisory System webpage.

The United States remains a target of terrorist interest, both from international terror groups and from domestic-based individual’s adhering to various forms of violent extremist ideologies. Credible information assessed by US authorities indicates that individuals or groups have developed both the intent and capability to conduct terrorist attacks in the US. Attacks could be indiscriminate, targeting law enforcement officials, government buildings and areas frequented by foreigners including transport hubs and major events.

New Zealanders in the United States are advised to keep themselves informed of potential risks to safety and security by monitoring the media and other local information sources. Follow any instructions issued by the local authorities and be aware of your surroundings in public places such as shopping malls, markets, monuments, places of worship, tourist destinations, demonstrations, large gatherings and on public transport.

In the event of an attack, leave the area as soon as it is safe to do so. Avoid the area in case of secondary attacks.

Crime Petty crime such as theft and pickpocketing can occur, particularly in urban centres, tourist locations and on public transport. New Zealanders should stay alert to their surroundings, stay vigilant on public transport and avoid leaving belongings unattended, including in rental vehicles.

There is a higher incidence of violent crime and firearm possession than in New Zealand. In many states, it is legal for United States citizens to openly carry firearms in public. Violent crime has targeted individuals and groups from the LGBTQIA+ community and those with diverse ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds. However, crime rates vary considerably across cities and suburbs and while tourists are rarely targeted, there is always a risk of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. New Zealanders should take care when travelling in unfamiliar areas including on public transport. Research your destination before travelling and seek local advice if you are concerned about levels of criminal activity.

Active shooter incidents occur in the United States. For advice on how to respond to an active shooter situation, please see the US Department of Homeland Security website .

You should exercise caution if crossing the border by car into Mexico from Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas. There have been increased incidents of crime associated with drug trading and some foreign nationals have been targeted indiscriminately.

Be aware of rental and financial scams via websites and social media. Credit card and ATM fraud including debit card cloning is also a risk to travellers.

Civil Unrest and Political Tension Protests and demonstrations regularly occur. We advise New Zealanders to follow any advice issued by the local authorities, monitor local media for developments and avoid all demonstrations, protests and rallies as even those intended as peaceful have the potential to result in violence.

Natural Disasters The US can experience severe weather events, such as hurricanes, especially in May or June to November regularly impacting the eastern seaboard, Gulf Coast, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands.

Tornados are most frequent and at their highest intensities across the Central Plains and parts of the Midwest. While tornadoes can form at any time of year, conditions are most favourable in the spring and summer months (March to September). 

Severe snowstorms during winter can cause disruptions to critical infrastructure, including power cuts. Winter storms may also lead to widespread flight delays and cancellations.

Many parts of the US are also prone to earthquakes including Alaska, California, Guam, Hawaii, Nevada, Northern Mariana Islands, Oklahoma, Oregon, Puerto Rico, Washington state and the US Virgin Islands.

Contact your travel operator or airline for the latest departure information, and monitor local weather forecasts.  If there is a severe weather event, or natural disaster, follow the advice of the local authorities and keep your family and friends back in New Zealand informed of your safety and well-being.

Travellers carrying electronic devices, such as laptops and mobile phones, should be aware that these devices may be subject to security checks by United States border authorities.

New Zealanders travelling or resident in the United States should have comprehensive travel and medical insurance policies in place. Medical costs in the United States are extremely high and the New Zealand government cannot assist with medical expenses. 

New Zealanders in the United States are encouraged to register their travel with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA):

• U.S. citizens traveling to or transiting through New Zealand under the visa waiver program are required to have an  NZeTA . This is also true for cruise ship passengers. It can take up to 72 hours to process an NZeTA so apply well in advance of your trip. The NZeTA is valid for multiple visits for up to two years.
• If your NZeTA application is denied, you will need to apply for a visa. Visit the Embassy of New Zealand website for the most current visa information.

International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL):

• U.S. citizens traveling to New Zealand for tourism, certain student programs, and short-term business trips are required to pay an  International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) . This levy is assessed when a person applies for an NZeTA or New Zealand visa. The IVL is not required of passengers that are transiting New Zealand on a transit visa or transit ETA.

Arrival Information:

• A customs officer at the port of entry into New Zealand may examine items such as mobile phones, iPads, Android tablets, hard drives, laptops, and digital cameras. The officer may ask for your password or ask you to enter it. Fines of up to NZD $5,000 may be enforced for failure to comply. Passwords are not kept, nor is personal data altered.
• New Zealand has very strict biosecurity procedures  to prevent the introduction of harmful pests and diseases. All biosecurity-risk goods must be declared or disposed of in marked amnesty bins at airports and seaports. If you do not declare goods considered to be a biosecurity risk, such as honey, fresh fruit, seeds, and plants, you can receive an immediate fine of NZD $400.

The U.S. Department of State is unaware of any HIV/AIDS entry restrictions for visitors to, or foreign residents of, New Zealand. 

Cook Islands: Cook Islands is self-governing in free association with New Zealand. U.S. citizen visitors do not require an entry permit for stays up to 31 days. Your passport needs to be valid for at least six months past the arrival date in the Cook Islands.

Safety and Security

Crime: The crime rate in New Zealand is relatively low, but theft from cars, recreational vehicles, and hostels is common, especially in areas frequented by tourists.

Do not leave passports or other valuable items in unattended vehicles.

Violent crime against tourists is rare; however, if you are traveling alone, you should remain vigilant and be cautious in secluded areas.

Internet romance and financial scams are prevalent in New Zealand. Scams are often initiated through Internet postings/profiles or by unsolicited emails and letters. Scammers almost always pose as U.S. citizens who have no one else to turn to for help. Common scams include:  

• Romance/Online dating 
• Money transfers 
• Grandparent/Relative targeting 

Victims of Crime:  For emergencies please dial 111 for Police, Fire and Ambulance. For non-emergencies please dial 105 for Police, and contact the U.S. Consulate General Auckland at +64 4 462 6000.

Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crime.

Domestic Violence:  U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence are encouraged to contact the Consulate General for assistance.

Tourism:  The tourism industry is generally regulated and rules [with regards to best practices and safety inspections] are regularly enforced.  Hazardous areas/activities are identified with appropriate signage and professional staff is typically on hand in support of organized activities. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is widely available throughout the country. Outside of a major metropolitan center, it may take more time for first responders and medical professionals to stabilize a patient and provide life-saving assistance. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance . 

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties: You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business.

Penalties for possessing, using, or trafficking in illegal drugs in New Zealand are severe, and convicted offenders can expect long jail sentences and heavy fines.

In New Zealand, driving under the influence could land you in jail. Roadside sobriety checks by police are common. The blood alcohol limit in New Zealand is lower than that in most U.S. states.

Arrest Notification: If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Consulate General immediately. See our  webpage  for further information.

Natural Disasters and Weather Conditions: Natural disasters occur in New Zealand and include earthquakes, tsunamis, volcano eruptions, and cyclones. In addition, weather conditions can change quickly leaving you stranded or injured, particularly if you are in an isolated area.

• Always follow the advice of local authorities.

On December 9, 2019, the volcano on Whakaari/White Island erupted while tourists were visiting. This led to numerous casualties, including deaths of U.S. citizens. The volcano remains active and further eruptions are possible. Avoid Whakaari/White Island and follow the advice of local authorities.

There are many areas in New Zealand with active volcanoes. Tourists are encouraged to visit GeoNet for up-to-date information on volcanic alert levels, as well as other geological hazards in New Zealand. As always, follow the advice of local authorities.

The National Emergency Management Agency provides timely information to citizens and visitors through an  Emergency Mobile Alert . This service is broadcast from local cell towers to all capable phones in the area and is designed to provide targeted messaging to areas affected by serious hazards. Messages will only be sent when there is a serious threat to life, health, or property.

Adventure Sports: Injuries and death can result from participating in extreme adventure sports, such as bungee jumping, sky diving, hiking, rappelling, climbing, motorcycling, and kayaking. Use caution and common sense when engaging in these activities. Make sure you have travel medical insurance and that it covers your sport.

Never participate in adventure sports alone. Always carry identification and let someone else know where you are at all times. Before kayaking, check the river conditions and wear a life jacket. When hiking, rappelling, or climbing, carry a first aid kit and know the location of the nearest rescue center.

Visit the  New Zealand Department of Conservation  website for advice and direction on how to safely and legally hike, bike, etc. in New Zealand.

Imports: New Zealand is an island nation, and the government is serious about preserving its delicate ecosystem. The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) strictly regulates what can be imported into New Zealand.

• If you do not declare goods that could be quarantined, you can be fined up to NZD $100,000 and/or face up to five years in prison.
• If you do not declare goods considered to be a biosecurity risk, such as honey, fresh fruit, seeds, and plants, you can receive an instant fine of NZD $400.
• When importing a pet, you will need thorough veterinary documentation and a quarantine period will be required.
• The MPI may seize and destroy unfinished wood products, used hiking shoes, gardening tools, fresh food items, and items such as used pet carriers. Thoroughly clean any hiking equipment or sports gear prior to your arrival in New Zealand.

LGBTI Travelers: There are no legal restrictions on same-sex sexual relations or the organization of LGBTI events in New Zealand.

Travelers with Disabilities:  The law in New Zealand prohibits discrimination against persons with physical disability or impairment; any other loss or abnormality of psychological or anatomical structure or function; reliance on a guide dog, wheelchair, or other remedial means; and the presence in the body of organisms capable of causing illness. The law is enforced. Social acceptance of persons with disabilities in public is as prevalent as in the United States. The most common types of accessibility may include accessible facilities, information, and access to services. Expect accessibility to be limited in public transportation, lodging, and general infrastructure. 

• Every new building and major reconstruction in New Zealand must provide "reasonable and adequate" access for individuals with disabilities, but be aware that most buildings pre-date this requirement. Most facilities have wheelchair access.
• Many transport operators can provide accessible transport, but most need advance notice so you may want to call ahead to describe your needs. Mobility parking permits are available.
• If you are planning a holiday and need information on facilities for individuals with disabilities, please visit the  New Zealand Tourism  website.
• Rental, repair and replacement parts for aids/equipment/devices may be limited. Service providers, such as sign language interpreters or personal assistants are available in many areas.

Travelers and crew do not need pre-departure tests or proof of COVID-19 vaccination to enter New Zealand. Please check with your airline or cruise provider as they may still require proof of vaccination.

Ambulance services and quality medical care are widely available in New Zealand. Waiting lists exist for certain types of treatment. Access to medical care may be less available in rural areas.    We do not pay medical bills. Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas. Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance.

Medical Insurance: Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. If they do not, consider emergency or comprehensive traveler’s insurance. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See our webpage for more information on overseas coverage. Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for more information on type of insurance you should consider before you travel overseas.

We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation.

Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription. Check with the government of New Zealand regulations at New Zealand MedSafe to ensure the medication is legal in New Zealand.

Vaccinations: Be up-to-date on all vaccinations recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

• Although surrogacy agencies/clinics claim surrogacy is legal in New Zealand, there is little legal framework for foreigners or same-sex couples to pursue surrogacy in New Zealand. As a result, surrogacy agreements between foreign or same-sex intending parents and gestational mothers may not be enforced by New Zealand courts. You may be required to adopt the child before you are given parental rights.
• If you decide to pursue parenthood in New Zealand via assisted reproductive technology (ART) with a gestational mother, be prepared for long and unexpected delays in documenting your child’s citizenship. Be aware that individuals who attempt to circumvent local law risk criminal prosecution.

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety: While in New Zealand, you may encounter road conditions that differ significantly from those in the United States.

Renting a car or a camper is a popular way to enjoy New Zealand's natural beauty, but if you are unfamiliar with local conditions, you should be extremely careful. New Zealand has only 100 miles of multi-lane divided motorways. Most intercity travel is on narrow, two-lane roads. While these roads are in good condition, New Zealand's rugged terrain means motorists often encounter sharper curves and steeper grades than those found on the U.S. Interstate Highway System.

• Use caution to avoid animals when driving in rural areas.
• There is very limited cell phone coverage on large portions of scenic highway in the South Island, which is remote and has little traffic.
• Drivers are advised to review the driving rules and regulations beforehand. For example, pedestrians do not have the right of way except in crosswalks. New Zealand law requires that cars stop at least two meters (approximately 6 feet) from a crosswalk that is in use. Additionally, there is no left-hand turn allowed at a red light. Drivers are reminded to remain cognizant of turning to the left (counterclockwise) when entering traffic circles.

Traffic Laws:  All traffic moves on the left in New Zealand, and you should exercise extra caution if you are accustomed to driving on the right.

• Driving on the wrong side of the road is a leading cause of serious injury and death for U.S. tourists.
• Make sure to follow the posted speed limit signs. The speed limits are much lower than those in the United States.
• Proceed carefully through intersections. Traffic circles are common throughout New Zealand. When approaching a traffic circle, always yield to traffic coming from the right--noting that traffic already in the circle has the right-of-way--and merge to the left into the circle. Left turns on a red traffic signal are not permitted.
• New Zealand prohibits driving while texting as well as driving while using a cell phone.

Public Transportation: New Zealand has public transport systems in all major cities and some towns. The public transportation system in New Zealand is generally easy to use and reliable.

Aviation Safety Oversight: The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has assessed the government of New Zealand’s Civil Aviation Authority as being in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards for oversight of New Zealand’s air carrier operations. United States of America: Changes to entry requirements

An Executive Order (external link) on 27 January 2017 has temporarily suspended entry into the United States of foreign nationals from seven countries: Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Iran, Somalia, Libya, and Yemen.

The United States Embassy in New Zealand has confirmed that the Executive Order suspending the entry into the United States for foreign nationals does not restrict the travel of New Zealand dual nationals, so long as they travel on their New Zealand passport and possess a valid United States visa.

We encourage all New Zealanders who require advice on entry into the United States to contact the United States Embassy or Consulate in New Zealand (external link) . The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade is unable to advise on the entry requirements of other countries.

You’ve screamed your way around the Anaheim theme parks, learned to surf at iconic Huntington Beach, applauded clever sea mammals in San Diego and you played ‘spot the movie star’ on Sunset Strip. Being such a large country, the weather in the US is different depending on which area you are in. Summer (June to August) is the peak travel season due to school holidays, but it can be uncomfortably hot in the desert areas and the south. 

The shoulder seasons of spring and autumn are generally considered to be the best times to visit, but the weather is still highly variable and these may be the wettest times in some parts of the country (such as the  Pacific Northwest ). Winter can be cold and snowy in the northern states, and many people head south in search of warmer temps.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Do I need a visa to travel to United States?

It depends on where you’re from. Many countries now operate under the United States Visa Waiver Program, meaning a visa isn’t required for stays of up to 90 days for travel purposes. There are 40 participating countries, including the United Kingdom , Australia , New Zealand, Germany and Spain.

If you're eligible for the Visa Waiver Program, you must obtain a letter of authorisation before you travel to the States. This can be obtained by submitting an application through the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation ( ESTA ).

If you’re a national from a non-participating country of the Visa Waiver Program, you must apply for a non-immigrant visa. Please see the Department of State website for more information.

If you have travelled to Iran, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Sudan, Somalia, Yemen or the Democratic People's Republic of Korea on or after 1 March 2011, you are ineligible and must apply for a non-immigrant visa instead.

People from a participating country who are also citizens of Cuba, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Iran, Iraq, Syria or Sudan must also apply for a non-immigrant visa.

Is tipping customary in the US?

Tipping is very much a part of the culture in the United States. Tips are expected at restaurants, cafes and diners, as well as by taxi drivers, valet attendants, porters and hotel maids.

People working in the service industry generally receive low wages and therefore rely upon tips as a major source of income.

In general, leave 15 to 20% of the bill at places serving food and a few dollars to bartenders and hotel staff who provide a personal service like carrying bags or cleaning your room.

What is the internet access like in the US?

Internet access is excellent in the US, and internet cafes and Wi-Fi hot spots are easily found in most cities and major towns.

Can I use my mobile phone while in the US?

Mobile phone coverage is excellent in most parts of the US although coverage may be patchy in remote, mountainous areas like national parks and canyons. Ensure global roaming is activated before you arrive.

What are the toilets like in the US?

Western-style flushable toilets are the norm in the US.

Can I drink the water in the US?

Drinking water from taps in the US is considered safe unless otherwise marked. For environmental reasons, try to use a refillable water bottle rather than buying bottled water.

Are credit cards accepted widely in the US?

Major credit cards are widely accepted by stores in the US. Smaller cafes and shops may not accept credit cards, so ensure you carry enough cash to cover small purchases.

People travelling on a passport from some countries must apply for a Visitor Visa to visit New Zealand. You can stay for up to either 6 months (multiple entry) or 9 months (single entry). You cannot work, but you can study for up to 3 months.

• 12 months you do not normally need a medical certificate.

You must provide a chest x-ray completed in the last 3 months, even if you've provided one to us previously, if:

• you have spent 6 consecutive months in China since the last x-ray certificate was issued, and
• you are now coming to NZ for more than 6 months.

You must be of good character

If you have a criminal conviction or are a security risk to New Zealand we may not be able to grant you a visa.

Good character for temporary visas

You must provide police certificates if your total time in New Zealand will be 24 months or longer across all visits. This includes any time you have spent in New Zealand in the past on other visas, even if you have been out of the country since then.

You also must provide police certificates if we ask for them.

If you are 16 years old or younger you do not need to provide police certificates.

If you have already sent us Police Certificates with a previous visa application and they are less than 24 months old, you do not need to send them again.

Police certificates must be less than 6 months old when you submit your application. They must be from any country you are a citizen of, or have spent more than 5 years in since you turned 17.

You must be a genuine visitor to New Zealand and intend to leave at the end of your visit

When we decide if your intentions are genuine, we consider all the information:

• you provide to support your application
• we have about your personal circumstances, and
• you provided in any previous applications.

Genuine intentions to visit, study or work in NZ

If you will return to a Schengen member state after your visit, but are not a citizen of a member state,  you should provide evidence of your right to return to that country.

Evidence of your right to return to that country is a current copy of your Schengen visa.

You may need to apply for a different visa if you are coming to New Zealand:

• to work — apply for a work visa.
• for a special purpose, such as joining a partner, or traveling for a work conference — check the other visitor visas to find one that matches your purpose.
• for medical treatment - apply for a Medical Treatment Visitor Visa.
• to conduct or undertake business — apply for a business visa.

You can include your partner and any dependent children up to the age of 19 in your application

To bring family:

• you must provide evidence of your relationship with them, like marriage and birth certificates
• you must provide proof of their identity
• they must be of good character
• they must be in good health.

You should provide copies of family members Hukou (household registration book) included in your application.

Funds or sponsorship

You must have enough money to live on while you are in New Zealand or have an acceptable sponsor

If you are paying for yourself

You must have at least NZD $1,000 per month, or NZD $400 per month if you have already paid for your accommodation.

To prove this, you can include:

• proof of accommodation pre-payment, like hotel pre-paid vouchers or receipts
• bank statements or credit card statements
• bank drafts or travellers’ cheques.

We may also ask for information about the source of your money that you will use for travelling.

If you are sponsored

Your sponsor must provide evidence that they meet the criteria, and can look after you while you are in New Zealand.

You must declare in your visa application that you will pay the costs of any health care or medical assistance you receive in New Zealand.

We recommend that you have full medical insurance for the length of your visit.

Onward travel

You must leave New Zealand at the end of your stay

When you arrive in New Zealand you may be asked to show that you intend to leave the country — for example, a return ticket or proof you have enough money to buy a ticket out of New Zealand. This is in addition to the funds you have to live on.

If you are sponsored and you do not have a return ticket your sponsor can provide recent bank statements to show they have enough money to buy you a ticket out of New Zealand.

If you are not a citizen of the country you will return to after your visit, you must provide evidence of your legal right to enter that country.

If you will return to Schengen member state after your visit, but are not a citizen of a member state, evidence of your right to enter that country is a current copy of your Schengen visa.

If you buy your ticket before we have processed your visa application, you risk losing the fare if we do not grant you a visa.

You must apply for entry permission when you arrive in New Zealand. You can do this by completing a digital New Zealand traveller declaration (NZTD), or an NZTD paper declaration.

New Zealand Customs and Biosecurity also check that you meet their entry requirements.

You can be refused entry permission if you:

• are not a genuine visitor
• do not meet our character criteria
• have had a change in circumstances since you were granted a visa
• refuse to let us take your photo or to provide us with your fingerprints or an iris scan
• cannot provide evidence of any onward travel or funds required to leave New Zealand.

You may not be allowed to check in to your flight if your passport is close to expiring. Check that it will not expire while you are in New Zealand or close to when you plan to leave New Zealand.

How long you can stay

How long you can stay depends on if you have a multiple entry or a single entry visa.

Multiple entry Visitor Visa

If you have a multiple entry visa, you can visit New Zealand as a tourist as many times as you want and stay for a total of up to 6 months in a 12-month period.

The 12-month period is calculated back from the last day you intend to be in New Zealand (your intended departure date).

For example, if the last day you intend to be in New Zealand is 1 December 2024, then your 12-month period will begin on 1 December 2023.

To be eligible, you must have been out of New Zealand for at least 9 months in the 18-month period before you apply.

Single entry Visitor Visa

If you want to visit New Zealand for more than 6 months or extend your current 6-month stay in New Zealand, we consider issuing you a single entry visa. This lets you enter New Zealand once and stay for up to 9 months in an 18-month period.

The 18-month period is calculated back from your intended departure date.

For example, if the last day you intend to be in New Zealand is 1 December 2024, then your 18-month period will begin on 1 June 2023.

If you have a single entry Visitor Visa and you leave the country, your visa will expire.

Visa expiry

You must leave New Zealand before your visa expires.

Visa expiry dates are printed on a visa label or included in a visa letter.

If travelling in and out of New Zealand, a valid multiple entry travel condition  is needed to return to New Zealand.

Changing the conditions of a visitor visa

If applying from inside New Zealand, we will normally give multiple entry travel conditions when we grant a visa.

If there are no multiple entry travel conditions and you leave New Zealand the visa will expire.

The travel conditions will be listed on the visa label or in a visa letter.

Unless your visa label or letter says 'Return/onward travel not required', you must have either of the following:

• a travel ticket to a country you can enter
• an acceptable sponsor who can pay for your travel ticket out of New Zealand to a country you can enter.

What sponsors must do – responsibilities and obligations

Unless your visa label or letter states “Return/onward travel not required” you must have a ticket to leave New Zealand whenever you travel here.

You must have enough money to support yourself while you are in New Zealand or have a sponsor.

You may be asked for evidence you have enough funds to support yourself when you check in or arrive in New Zealand.

You cannot  work in New Zealand on this visa.

If you’re coming to New Zealand to take up an offer of employment, you should apply for a Work Visa.

If you’re coming to New Zealand for a special purpose, such as a work requirement, or as a partner or family member, you should first consider the Special Category Visitor Visas .

If you want to conduct business while in New Zealand, you should apply for a Business Visitor Visa.

School-aged children can study for up to 3 months in any calendar year. Children studying for more than 2 weeks must attend a school that is signatory to the ‘Code of Pastoral Care for International Students’.

The US ESTA for New Zealand citizens is a visa waiver that grants authorization to enter the United States of America.

The Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) was designed as a way for eligible visitors to gain permission to enter the United States, while being screened for security purposes. New Zealand is one of more than 30 countries that can take advantage of the US ESTA .

Thanks to the ESTA waiver program, travelers can apply for their travel authorization online in less than 15 minutes. There is no need to visit an embassy , have an in-person interview with an immigration officer, or spend weeks waiting for approval, unlike many traditional visa programs.

Do not forget to complete an ESTA application form before traveling to the United States from New Zealand — ideally as soon as you book your trip or at least 72 hours in advance of your trip.

Do New Zealand citizens need a visa for the United States of America?

New Zealand citizens do not need a visa if they are planning to visit the United States for the purposes of tourism, business, or transit for a duration of 90 days or less.

However, they are required to have an ESTA travel authorization , as stipulated in the Visa Waiver Program.

The ESTA allows travelers to stay within the United States for up to 90 days . It is valid for 2 years from the date of issue, or until the traveler’s passport expires (whichever happens first).

The ESTA is necessary for entry into the United States via a commercial flight or cruise .

The ESTA is a multiple-entry authorization , which means that visitors from New Zealand can travel in and out of the United States as many times as they would like within the allotted time period.

An approved ESTA application means that you can have multiple trips to the U.S. of a short duration for the purposes of business or tourism during the validity of ESTA. Keep in mind however that if you travel to the U.S. frequently and stay for long periods of time, CBP officers at the port of entry may question your intentions in the U.S. If your plans change and you decide that you wish to stay in the U.S. longer or if you wish to work or study, you will need to apply for a visa at the U.S. Consulate in New Zealand.

US ESTA Requirements for New Zealanders

In order for travelers to apply for their ESTA, they must first meet all of the US ESTA visa waiver requirements for New Zealand citizens . These requirements include the following:

• The traveler’s New Zealand passport must be valid when entering the United States. When filling out the ESTA application, we recommend that applicants keep their passport nearby so that they can easily reference it when answering questions on the form.
• The traveler must have a valid form of payment , such as a debit card or credit card, in order to pay the ESTA processing fee.
• The traveler must provide a valid email address during the application process. This is where his or her approved ESTA visa waiver will be sent to.

Once all of these requirements have been met, the traveler is ready to apply for their US ESTA visa waiver.

US ESTA Application for New Zealand Citizens

The process to obtain a US ESTA for New Zealand citizens is quick and simple. Travelers will simply need to fill out the online form with their personal information, answer a few questions, and pay the fee.

The US ESTA application has two parts. The first part will ask travelers to submit the following data:

• Personal information (such as first and last name, gender, and date and place of birth)
• Passport information (including passport number, issue and expiration date, and nationality)
• Contact details (including a home address, phone number, and valid email address)

It is especially important to take care when typing in your email address , because this is where your US ESTA will be sent to once it has been approved.

Applicants will then need to pay the ESTA processing fee with a valid credit or debit card.

The second part of the ESTA form asks specific questions about the traveler , including information regarding the following:

• Point of contact in the US
• Criminal background (if applicable)
• Health history
• Previous trips to the United States (if any)

New Zealanders also have the option to include an emergency contact (phone number and/or email). This is highly recommended.

After the application is complete, we recommend that travelers go through the form and double-check to make sure that all of the information is accurate and spelled correctly .

How Will I Receive my US ESTA from New Zealand?

Your approved ESTA is linked to your passport and will arrive via email at the email address registered on the application form. Therefore, it is recommended that you provide an email address that you check regularly.

Most applicants receive their ESTA authorization within 2 business days of applying. Many will be approved within a few minutes of submitting the form.

The processing time can vary due to the volume of applications, and a number of other factors. For this reason, New Zealanders are advised to apply a minimum of 72 hours before traveling, and further in advance if possible.

People aren't the only ones who enjoy this town. The world's smallest penguins, little blue penguins, call the town home. You can visit the Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony to watch groups of penguins return from the sea.

While the town of Whataroa is small, with only 300 residents, there is still plenty to do for outdoor enthusiasts. Whataroa is a natural paradise with pristine lakes, rivers, and forests. Enjoy views of the forest and pakihi swamp on the Waitangitaona Wetland Walk. The walk takes you through the kahikatea forest on a raised boardwalk where you can see rushes, ferns, moss, and manuka. There are also stunning views of the Alps. One of the most spectacular natural sites in Whataroa is seeing the white heron in the swamp Kahikatea and White Pine rainforest. The long-haul flight can be enough to keep some U.S. travelers from visiting Australia . But a new Holland America Line itinerary will offer an alternate route.

The cruise line’s Grand Australia and New Zealand voyage will sail round-trip from San Diego, California in 2026, taking guests down under and back over 93 days.

"Our Grand Voyages are renowned for connecting guests with the world's most fascinating places while sailing roundtrip from the United States," Beth Bodensteiner, the line’s chief commercial officer, said in a news release . "Our team crafted this itinerary to show guests the parts of Australia and New Zealand they expect to visit, but also included frequently asked for, but rarely visited, ports throughout Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands."

When is Holland America’s Grand Australia and New Zealand voyage?

The cruise will depart on Jan. 4, 2026 aboard the line’s 1,432-guest Zaandam ship.

Where will the cruise sail?

The ship will visit 44 ports in 10 countries. Passengers will make their way to Hawaii first before heading to the South Pacific. The ship will then visit Australia – almost circling the country – and New Zealand, followed by Tonga and French Polynesia on the way back to San Diego.

The itinerary features two days of scenic cruising at the Great Barrier Reef and four late-night departures in Adelaide, Australia and the French Polynesian islands of Moorea, Raiatea and Huahine. Guests will also stay overnight in six ports, including Honolulu, Sydney and Auckland, giving them ample time to explore.

How much does the cruise cost?

The cruise currently starts at $17,699 per person based on double occupancy, according to Holland America’s website . Travelers who book by June 16, 2025 can get perks like a Surf Wi-Fi package, airport transfers in San Diego, a 3% pay-in-full discount and more thrown in (though they vary by stateroom category).

China, Russia vow to deepen ties, take aim at US during Putin's state visit to Beijing

Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin's meeting in Beijing on Thursday left no question of how closely the Chinese and Russian leaders are aligned in their vision for the world – and on bolstering the 'powerful driving force' of their autocratic double act.

The two vowed to deepen their strategic partnership, and took aim at a United States they painted as a destabilizing aggressor.

In a sweeping 7,000-word joint statement outlining their shared view on issues from Taiwan to the war in Gaza, they proclaimed: 'Russian-Chinese relations stand the test of rapid changes in the world, demonstrating strength and stability, and are experiencing the best period in their history.'

The meeting made for a deeply incongruous split-screen. As Xi and Putin sipped tea from wicker chairs in manicured gardens of the official Zhongnanhai compound and discussed how to 'promote world peace and common development,' Ukrainian civilians called for evacuation from villages under assault from Russian forces .

Putin's two-day state visit comes as Western leaders have leant on Xi to ensure that soaring exports from his country aren't propping up the Russian war effort – a claim Beijing denies.

But even as Putin's pomp-filled welcome in the Chinese capital seemed to fly in the face of Western concerns about the partnership, Putin appeared to depart Beijing with few, publicly acknowledged gains — though it remains unclear what happened in discussions behind closed doors.

Here are three key takeaways from the meeting.

Taking aim at a us-led world order.

Xi and Putin used their meetings and hefty statement to take aim at what they described as a global security system defined by US-backed military alliances – and pledged to work together to counter it.

'[We] intend to increase interaction and tighten coordination in order to counter Washington's destructive and hostile course towards the so-called 'dual containment' of our countries,' the leaders pledged in their joint statement.

The joint statement also called on the US not to arm its allies with missile systems, and condemned US cooperation with allies as 'extremely destabilizing.'

The US considers China the 'most serious long-term challenge to the international order,' and Russia 'a clear and present threat.'

The strident declaration comes as both Russia and China have criticized US support for Israel and its war against militant group Hamas and sought to bolster ties across the Global South, where there is mounting backlash against Israel's actions in Gaza.

On that conflict, they called for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, while also voicing their points of alignment on a range of other contentious geopolitical issues including Taiwan and North Korea.

Growing military cooperation

While slamming US military alliances, the two leaders pledged to 'deepen' military 'trust and cooperation,' saying they would expand joint exercises and combat training, regularly conduct joint sea and air patrols, and improve the 'capabilities and level of joint response to challenges and threats.'

The two nations have grown their military drills around the world in recent years, continuing after Russia launched its war in Ukraine in February 2022 – drawing concern from Western observers that the two US rivals are working to enhance their military interoperability.

Putin also traveled to Beijing with top security officials who the Russian president said Thursday would join informal talks on Ukraine. Newly appointed Russian Defense Minister Andrey Belousov, and his predecessor Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu, both attended.

It wasn't clear if Chinese defense officials joined those talks, which took place, according to Russia state media, during four-hour informal negotiations behind the gates of the heavily secured Zhongnanhai compound — the residence for the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry quoted Xi as reiterating a call for a 'political solution' in Ukraine, as well as his support for a peace conference recognized by both sides.

Observers say Putin was likely interested in discussing material support for Russia's war or defense industry, including dual-use items the US has said China is exporting to Russia, which power its defense industrial base . Beijing, which says it is neutral on the war, has repeatedly defended its trade with Russia as part of normal bilateral relations.

But such negotiations may show the limits of the partnership, at least when it comes to China increasing its support to include weapons. Xi, analysts say, is seeking to keep Putin as a close partner, while not stepping over Western red lines.

'Putin has gone to China in order to ask for more help from China, help he is unlikely to receive … he's not going to get weapons and ammunition and other types of direct support from China for Russia's war effort,' former US ambassador to NATO Kurt Volker told CNN.

Broad rhetoric, few concrete pledges

Despite the lofty rhetoric, information on any major deals brokered during the meeting was scant as Putin departed Beijing for the second day of the visit in northeastern China's Harbin.

One deal apparently left un-inked was on plans for a 'Power of Siberia 2' pipeline, which would funnel Russian natural gas to China. Beijing is widely seen as hesitating on the long-hyped deal, which Putin wants to replace revenue lost as Europe reduces its reliance on Russian fuels after the Ukraine invasion.

Instead, the leaders in broad strokes pledged to 'jointly promote the implementation of large-scale energy projects,' while upping energy cooperation across oil, liquified natural gas, natural gas, coal and electricity.

They also called for strengthening industrial cooperation across a range of fields including civil aviation construction, electronics, chemical industry, shipbuilding and industrial equipment.

These pledges, however vague, do signpost more economic coordination in the years to come.

'For Putin, it's a glory moment that Russia is still on its feet (economically) … mostly because of the lifeline provided by China,' said Alexandra Prokopenko, a fellow at the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center.

For that reason, she added, 'he's okay with on-going dependency between Russia and China – and with inequality in this relationship.'
