Bjp is planning to ban rss: uddhav thackeray.

Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday claimed that the Bharatiya Janata Party was planning to ban its ideological parent, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), after winning a third term in power. Speaking at his last rally here before the campaigning for the Lok Sabha elections ended in Maharashtra, Thackeray also said that the Election Commissioner who was "acting like Modi's servant" will be removed after the INDIA alliance government comes to power.

"The way they tried to use and throw the Shiv Sena, a similar game will be played by Narendra Modi in future (with the RSS), and that has been stated by (BJP president J P) Nadda," he said.

Thackeray was referring to Nadda's comments to a newspaper that when the BJP was a small party and less capable, it needed the RSS, but now the saffron party has grown, become more capable, and "runs itself". "Nadda said there was a need of the RSS until now, (but) we are capable now and we don't need the RSS. If they (BJP) came to power, it is a bigger danger for RSS workers because they will ban the RSS," Thackeray claimed.

In the past, (then Union home minister) Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel had banned the RSS, he noted. "Those who call our party `nakli' (fake) Shiv Sena will call the Sangh `nakli'," Thackeray further said, referring to Prime Minister Modi's jibe at the Sena (UBT).

"The entire RSS cadre toils to make you prime minister. Why are you planning to ban the RSS which gave you birth and gave you political power," Thackeray asked. (PTI)

Savarkar is not election issue, Modi tried to polarise voters: Pawar

NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar on Saturday said Vinayak Damodar Savarkar was not an election issue, but Prime Minister Narendra Modi tried to polarize people by talking about him during his campaign rally here.

Modi, in his speech here on Friday, dared Pawar to make Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to promise that he would not criticise the late freedom fighter and Hindutva ideologue ever again.

"Savarkar is not an election issue, and Rahul has not spoken about him (lately). But Modi's speech was divisive and meant to instigate, polarise. I have never seen such a prime minister," Pawar said at a joint press conference with Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge and Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray on the last day of campaigning for the final phase of the Lok Sabha polls in Maharashtra.

Rahul Gandhi has often targeted Savarkar, claiming that he helped the British rulers and wrote mercy petitions when he was incarcerated on the Andaman islands. (PTI)

Will Messi play in Orlando? Here’s the latest on Inter Miami star’s left leg injury

travel update for tomorrow

Lionel Messi ’s status remains up in the air for Wednesday night’s match between Inter Miami and Orlando City .

He participated in a recovery workout for the second consecutive day, along with a majority of Inter Miami’s starters on Tuesday. He was not seen during a portion of practice open to reporters.

Messi appeared to hyperextend his legendary left leg during Inter Miami’s 3-2 win over CF Montreal last Saturday, just before the first half. He finished the game, but missed two free kicks and at least one attempt on goal.

“He had a blow to his knee on Saturday. He was able to continue playing. In fact, he finished the game, he put some ice on it. (On Monday) he trained with the guys who did some regenerative training. He (rode on a stationary) bike, a little bit of jogging on the field,” Inter Miami coach Javi Morales said on Tuesday. “Let's see, we will try to evaluate everything, to see how they feel and who is ready.”

Inter Miami will likely determine Messi’s status later Tuesday, before flying up to Orlando on Wednesday for the 7:30 p.m. ET match.

Inter Miami has five games remaining before Messi, 36, departs to captain Argentina during  this summer’s Copa America 2024 . It could be Messi’s last major tournament for his country after declaring the 2022 World Cup would be his last.

Messi is second in MLS with 10 goals scored and first with 12 assists for Inter Miami, which tops the Eastern Conference with 27 points.

If Messi is unable to play or limited against Orlando, his status could also be in the air for Saturday’s home match against D.C. United .

Just before halftime in the Montreal game, Messi spent several minutes laying on the pitch after being tackled by Montreal’s George Campbell.

Messi extended his left leg to control a pass toward him, but Campbell’s momentum carried him right into the World Cup champion. Campbell did not receive a yellow card for the sequence.

Messi walked to the sideline after being evaluated by trainers, and was visibly upset about the two-minute wait he had to endure to re-enter the game at the next stoppage point, a new MLS rule implanted this season.

Messi finished the first half, and played the entire match against Montreal. It was his first match without a goal or assist, breaking an eight-game streak with multiple goal contributions to start the 2024 MLS season.

Messi’s eight-game streak with multiple goal contributions ranks second in MLS history, only behind LA Galaxy standout Cobi Jones, who did it in the first nine games in 1998 .

Inter Miami’s upcoming schedule

The Orlando match comes in a stretch of Saturday-Wednesday-Saturday games for Inter Miami. The next five games are likely to be Messi’s last before joining Argentina for Copa America this summer.

NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory captured this image of solar flares early Saturday afternoon. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says there have been measurable effects and impacts from the geomagnetic storm.

Planet Earth is getting rocked by the biggest solar storm in decades – and the potential effects have those people in charge of power grids, communications systems and satellites on edge.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says there have been measurable effects and impacts from the geomagnetic storm that has been visible as aurora across vast swathes of the Northern Hemisphere. So far though, NOAA has seen no reports of major damage.

There has been some degradation and loss to communication systems that rely on high-frequency radio waves, NOAA told NPR, as well as some preliminary indications of irregularities in power systems.

"Simply put, the power grid operators have been busy since yesterday working to keep proper, regulated current flowing without disruption," said Shawn Dahl, service coordinator for the Boulder, Co.-based Space Weather Prediction Center at NOAA.

"Satellite operators are also busy monitoring spacecraft health due to the S1-S2 storm taking place along with the severe-extreme geomagnetic storm that continues even now," Dahl added, saying some GPS systems have struggled to lock locations and offered incorrect positions.

NOAA's GOES-16 satellite captured a flare erupting occurred around 2 p.m. EDT on May 9, 2024.

As NOAA had warned late Friday, the Earth has been experiencing a G5, or "Extreme," geomagnetic storm . It's the first G5 storm to hit the planet since 2003, when a similar event temporarily knocked out power in part of Sweden and damaged electrical transformers in South Africa.

The NOAA center predicted that this current storm could induce auroras visible as far south as Northern California and Alabama.

Around the world on social media, posters put up photos of bright auroras visible in Russia , Scandinavia , the United Kingdom and continental Europe . Some reported seeing the aurora as far south as Mallorca, Spain .

The source of the solar storm is a cluster of sunspots on the sun's surface that is 17 times the diameter of the Earth. The spots are filled with tangled magnetic fields that can act as slingshots, throwing huge quantities of charged particles towards our planet. These events, known as coronal mass ejections, become more common during the peak of the Sun's 11-year solar cycle.

A powerful solar storm is bringing northern lights to unusual places

Usually, they miss the Earth, but this time, NOAA says several have headed directly toward our planet, and the agency predicted that several waves of flares will continue to slam into the Earth over the next few days.

While the storm has proven to be large, predicting the effects from such incidents can be difficult, Dahl said.

Shocking problems

The most disruptive solar storm ever recorded came in 1859. Known as the "Carrington Event," it generated shimmering auroras that were visible as far south as Mexico and Hawaii. It also fried telegraph systems throughout Europe and North America.

Stronger activity on the sun could bring more displays of the northern lights in 2024

Stronger activity on the sun could bring more displays of the northern lights in 2024

While this geomagnetic storm will not be as strong, the world has grown more reliant on electronics and electrical systems. Depending on the orientation of the storm's magnetic field, it could induce unexpected electrical currents in long-distance power lines — those currents could cause safety systems to flip, triggering temporary power outages in some areas.

my cat just experienced the aurora borealis, one of the world's most radiant natural phenomena... and she doesn't care pic.twitter.com/Ee74FpWHFm — PJ (@kickthepj) May 10, 2024

The storm is also likely to disrupt the ionosphere, a section of Earth's atmosphere filled with charged particles. Some long-distance radio transmissions use the ionosphere to "bounce" signals around the globe, and those signals will likely be disrupted. The particles may also refract and otherwise scramble signals from the global positioning system, according to Rob Steenburgh, a space scientist with NOAA. Those effects can linger for a few days after the storm.

Like Dahl, Steenburgh said it's unclear just how bad the disruptions will be. While we are more dependent than ever on GPS, there are also more satellites in orbit. Moreover, the anomalies from the storm are constantly shifting through the ionosphere like ripples in a pool. "Outages, with any luck, should not be prolonged," Steenburgh said.

What Causes The Northern Lights? Scientists Finally Know For Sure

What Causes The Northern Lights? Scientists Finally Know For Sure

The radiation from the storm could have other undesirable effects. At high altitudes, it could damage satellites, while at low altitudes, it's likely to increase atmospheric drag, causing some satellites to sink toward the Earth.

The changes to orbits wreak havoc, warns Tuija Pulkkinen, chair of the department of climate and space sciences at the University of Michigan. Since the last solar maximum, companies such as SpaceX have launched thousands of satellites into low Earth orbit. Those satellites will now see their orbits unexpectedly changed.

"There's a lot of companies that haven't seen these kind of space weather effects before," she says.

The International Space Station lies within Earth's magnetosphere, so its astronauts should be mostly protected, Steenburgh says.

In a statement, NASA said that astronauts would not take additional measures to protect themselves. "NASA completed a thorough analysis of recent space weather activity and determined it posed no risk to the crew aboard the International Space Station and no additional precautionary measures are needed," the agency said late Friday.

While this storm will undoubtedly keep satellite operators and utilities busy over the next few days, individuals don't really need to do much to get ready.

"As far as what the general public should be doing, hopefully they're not having to do anything," Dahl said. "Weather permitting, they may be visible again tonight." He advised that the largest problem could be a brief blackout, so keeping some flashlights and a radio handy might prove helpful.

And don't forget to go outside and look up, adds Steenburgh. This event's aurora is visible much further south than usual.

A faint aurora can be detected by a modern cell phone camera, he adds, so even if you can't see it with your eyes, try taking a photo of the sky.

The aurora "is really the gift from space weather," he says.

2024 Preakness Stakes date and time: When is the race, how to watch, odds, horses and weather

Kentucky Derby winner and Preakness Stakes entrant Mystik Dan leaves the track after a workout ahead of the 149th running of the Preakness Stakes horse race at Pimlico Race Course, Thursday, May 16, 2024, in Baltimore. (AP Photo/Julio Cortez)

The 2024 Preakness Stakes (Saturday, May 18 on NBC/Peacock) will be the 149th running of the annual horse race in Baltimore. It’s the yearly second leg of horse racing’s Triple Crown pursuit. Mystik Dan will be running in this year’s Preakness after some doubt that he would run in the race due to the short turn around between the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness.

Here’s everything you need to know about the 2024 Preakness Stakes.

What is the Preakness Stakes?

The Preakness Stakes is the second race in the Triple Crown series and is running for the 149th time this year. A blanket of yellow flowers is draped on the winner each year and the weather vane at Pimlico is painted with the silk’s colors immediately after a winner is declared. The field is much smaller than the 20 horses that start the Kentucky Derby each year. This year, only eight horses will run in the Preakness. Only horses that are three years old are eligible to race in the Preakness Stakes, and it is open to both male and female horses. Swiss Skydiver, a filly, won the Preakness Stakes in 2020 and Rachel Alexandra won in 2009.

Everything you need to know about the horses running the Preakness on Saturday

When is the 2024 Preakness Stakes?

The 2024 Preakness Stakes will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2024, at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore.

What horses are in the 2024 Preakness Stakes and their odds?

  • Mugatu – 20-1
  • Uncle Heavy – 7-1
  • Catching Freedom – 7-2
  • Muth – Scratched
  • Mystik Dan – 5-2
  • Seize the Grey – 8-1
  • Just Steel – 9-1
  • Tuscan Gold – 7-2
  • Imagination – 9-2

What time does the 2024 Preakness Stakes start?

The post-time for the Preakness Stakes is set for 7:01 p.m. ET.

How long is the Preakness Stakes?

The race is 1 3/16 miles long. Secretariat owns the Preakness Stakes record at 1:53, although he wasn’t credited with the record until a 2012 meeting of the Maryland Racing Commission. Smarty Jones owns the record for margin of victory with a 11 1/2 length victory in 2004. Trainer Bob Baffert has won the Preakness Stakes eight times, most recently in 2023.

Who won the 2023 Preakness Stakes?

In 2023, National Treasure won the Preakness Stakes by a head over Blazing Sevens. National Treasure was 4-1 on the morning line odds. Mage, the 2023 Kentucky Derby winner, finished third.

What is the weather forecast for the 2024 Preakness Stakes?

The forecast for Saturday calls for a high of 66 degrees and a low of 58 degrees. The bigger news is there’s an 80 percent chance of rain on Saturday throughout the day with an accumulation of around half an inch.

How can I watch and stream the 2024 Preakness Stakes?

Television coverage for the 2024 Preakness Stakes starts at 4:30 p.m. ET on NBC. Preliminary coverage starts at 1:30 p.m. on CNBC. All coverage can also be streamed on Peacock.

go-deeper

Five long-standing traditions of the Kentucky Derby

Who is the favorite for the 2024 Preakness Stakes?

Mystik Dan is the 5-2 favorite for the 2024 Preakness Stakes. Muth, who is trained by Bob Baffert, was the morning line favorite when the post positions were drawn on Monday evening, but Muth scratched due to a high-fever.

Catching Freedom (6-1) and Imagination (6-1) have the second best odds.

What does morning line mean?

It is the first set of odds, released after the post positions were announced. Horse racing is parimutuel betting, meaning you can buy a ticket on the horse you want to win (or place or show, etc) but the odds are going to fluctuate up until the start of the race and eventually land on final odds as the horses go off, based on what everyone else is betting. In regular sports betting, you can buy a ticket at 5-to-1 odds and even if it’s down to 2-to-1 by the start of the game, your bet will pay out at 5-to-1. In horse racing, those 5-to-1 odds moving to 2-to-1 means you get stuck with those 2-to-1 odds like everyone else, no matter when the ticket was purchased (but, on the bright side, the odds can always go in the other direction, too).

What is the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes?

The Black-Eyed Susan Stakes is held on the Friday before the Preakness at Pimlico. It puts the best 3-year-old fillies against each other. The event is a Grade II race and offers $300,000 purse. It will stream starting at 4:30 p.m. ET Friday on Peacock.

How does betting on the Preakness Stakes work?

There are many different ways to bet on the Preakness Stakes, and it can be confusing to understand what an exacta, trifecta and superfecta are. It’s also confusing on how actually to place a bet on them.

The easiest way is to bet on the winner of the race. We explained all of the different types of horse racing bets here.
