star trek fire with fire

A mysterious terrorist organization has carried out several attacks against the Federation and Klingon Empire. Tensions are running high in a region already crippled by conflict. The perpetrators are tracked to the Lembatta Cluster, a mysterious region of space whose inhabitants, the Renao, regard the Alpha Quadrant’s powers as little more than conquering tyrants. The Federation are desperate to prevent more bloodshed, and have sent their most powerful warship, the U.S.S. Prometheus, into the Cluster to investigate the threat before all-consuming war breaks out.

Another fantastic addition to the Star Trek relaunch novels! A must read for any Star Trek fan who wants to see the Trek universe continue in the 24th century.

The story takes place post- Nemesis and does tie into the other relaunch novels. But it’s not mandatory to read them all to jump into this one (I definitely haven’t. There are TONS. I’m not made of unlimited free time). Any references to previous plot points do have a basic explanation so the reader doesn’t get lost in the Delta Quadrant of understanding.

star trek fire with fire

Originally written in German, I found the writing in this one was a bit simpler than other Star Trek novels, which isn’t a bad thing at all. It just means I was able to read it faster and have longer binge reading sessions.

I loved that there were so many aliens; they outnumbered the humans for sure. Starfleet on TV can be very human-centric — or even just human passing — so seeing such a diverse cast was refreshing. Lenissa was my favourite of the crew (I will always love Andorians).  Also a shoutout to Alexander Rozhenko. He annoyed me in Next Generation (I find a lot of the Star Trek child characters irritating), but I actually liked him here. All grown up and important.

Fire With Fire felt like the first part of a multi episode story arc and I can’t wait to find out how it ends!

Thanks so much to Titan Books for sending over a review copy!

REVIEW: Fighting ‘Fire With Fire’ as Big Finish Takes On Star Trek: Prometheus

Big finish took us all by surprise earlier this month with the sudden release of two ‘star trek’ audiobooks. with a third on the way., having joked about it on the big finish podcast, audio readings of the first two books in the three-part ‘star trek: prometheus’ saga were unveiled. based on the 2016 novel trilogy by german authors bernd perplies and christian humberg, today we’re looking at the opening salvo in ‘fire with fire’..

Following on from some skirmishes and wars with other species and the Typhon Pact, the Federation has changed. While they are still intent on exploration and seeking out new life, they are also aware of the delicate balancing act the universe is currently feeling.  When a series of terrorist acts hits the Federation and Klingon Empires, the Starfleet warship Prometheus is dispatched to a mysterious system, one that has cut many ties with the intergalactic forces of the Federation.

The mission of the USS Prometheus – nothing less than stopping an all-out universal war!

New Old Ship

The USS Prometheus has featured in Star Trek before in a 1996 episode of Star Trek: Voyager called ‘Message in a Bottle’. But Fire with Fire gives us a very different take of the Ship. Having faced the forces of the likes of the Borg, Romulans and Dominion, Prometheus is manned by a tired crew. Captain Richard Adams is less than happy at the prospect of another war but one of the attacks has some personal ramifications for him. Even if Adams doesn’t possess much in the way of character beyond what we’ve seen from others in the same position.

The rest of the crew is interesting and littered with ‘Star Trek’ aliens who should be familiar to Trekkies. Lt. Mendon is the Benzite Science Officer from ‘TNG’ episode ‘A Matter of Honour’ and Lt. Chell is the Bolian from ‘Voyager’s’, ‘Learning Curve’.

Perplies & Humberg

‘Fire with Fire’ comes from the hands of Bernd Perplies and Christian Humberg who wrote the debut ‘Prometheus’ novel to celebrate ‘Star Trek’s’ 50th anniversary in 2016. As you might have guessed, they were only available in Germany until recently .

Perplies and Humberg have crafted a story that is every bit the juggling act as their take on the Federation. On the one hand, there’s a ton of continuity references for fans which may at times risk diverting the main story.  The main mystery though is an interesting one and definitely mirrors real-life events that happening around the time of the book’s publication. With terrorism, the threat of war, horrifying video messages and deaths aplenty, the story runs the risk of being a little too knew the knuckle at times. But that makes it all the better as it gives the listener and reader something to really relate too.

The alien species created for this story, the Renao are also an interesting component to the plot. While most aliens in Star Trek are about conquest or have the same interests as the Federation, they have something of a unique outlook in the ‘Star Trek’ mythos. It will be interesting to see if they are fleshed out any more in future audios.

The interactions between the crew of the USS Prometheus are brilliant too. Some are best friends, lovers, allies and some are people thrown together out of necessity. They all feel however like we’ve known them forever. It isn’t hard to imagine this crew on television every week. So for that, Perplies and Humberg must be praised.

Alec Newman

Big Finish made the perfect choice in reader when they settled on Alec Newman, someone who isn’t a stranger to the worlds of ‘Star Trek’. Newman played an antagonist in three episodes of ‘Star Trek Enterprise’s’ fourth and final season.  As someone who has featured in Big Finish plays before, most notably ‘Dark Shadows’, he tears through the script with his versatile Scottish accent brilliantly. Something about his voice lends itself so well to this franchise and this particular corner of it.

Through his voice and the excellent interactions penned by the writers, it isn’t hard to imagine each member of the crew or the actions unfolding around them. If there was one problem with his narration it would be that in the early chapters he pronounces some of the alien species’ names wrong. That is a really minor quibble though as he effortlessly brings this tale to life, injecting some adrenaline into chapters and passages that might be a little lacklustre otherwise.

‘Fire with Fire’ is an interesting audio adventure, running at just over eleven hours it takes a little while to reiterate its own continuity. But, once it does, the central mystery unfolds into an interesting story, albeit with an abrupt ending. Though this may be to build up suspense for the second story.  With the next two ‘Prometheus’ stories lined up for future releases it will be interesting to see where Big Finish goes after that. As Jean-Luc Picard once said – “The Sky’s the Limit” …

Absolutely amazing.

There are only a few correct ways to create a new alien race in Star Trek. This novel does it right. It gives depth, meaning, and intrigue to this new race, who are responsible for very interesting things.

Summary [ ]

Starbase 91 is destroyed in a terrorist attack and a group calling themselves the Purifying Flame from the reclusive Renao species claim responsibility. The USS Prometheus is assigned to investigate: Its captain, Richard Adams , lost his niece Karen in the attack and its crew includes the only Renao in Starfleet, Lieutenant Jassat ak Namur .

Further attacks destroy the Klingon mining planet of Tika 4b and an observation station on Cestus III . The Klingons despatch the IKS Bortas , commanded by Captain Kromm , a drunken member of a noble family, to assist the Prometheus , accompanied by Alexander Rozhenko . Spock is also sent as a Federation special envoy.

Examination of the wreckage of Starbase 91 suggests that the attackers used Romulan ships and explosives to launch a suicide attack. Spock has Thokal , a colleague in the Unification movement and former Tal Shiar member, investigate and determine that the Renao have acquired surplus equipment that went missing when the Imperial Romulan State was re-absorbed into the empire .

The Federation and Klingon personnel search the Renao homeworld, Onferin , but Prometheus chief of security Lenissa zh'Thiin and chief engineer Jenna Winona Kirk (great-great-niece of James T. ) are captured by the Purifying Flame along with their Klingon colleagues, and held hostage so both Starfleet and the Klingons leave the planet.

Jassat reluctantly reports two old friends as Purifying Flame sympathisers and the Klingons capture and torture them, learning the location of the Purifying Flame stronghold. Kromm leads a joint operation to attack the base and the terrorists flee in space craft. The Prometheus and Bortas intercept them and rescue the hostages but many escape using a space-folding technique. Spock performs a mind meld with a captured terrorist and learns the Renao are being influenced by someone. The two ships head further into the cluster in search of answers.

Fire Country Season 2 Finale Confirmed To End With Major Wedding

Fire country season 2 just revealed why manny can't return to three rock, fire country season 2 finale images confirm bode's reunion with original season 1 character.

  • Sheriff Country, a spinoff of Fire Country starring Morena Baccarin, has been greenlit for future release, with potential for crossover episodes.
  • With Fire Country renewed for a third season, the future looks bright for potential spinoffs like Sheriff Country, pending a successful pilot.
  • Success of Sheriff Country may depend on finding the right showrunner and Baccarin's availability, with potential ties to Fire Country in the works.

Sheriff Country starring Morena Baccarin has officially gotten the greenlight from CBS. The series serves as a spinoff to Fire Country, an action drama series created by Max Thieriot, Tony Phelan, and Joan Rater. It follows a young convict with a troubled past, who seeks redemption when he volunteers to assist the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. Debuting on CBS in October 2022, Fire Country season 2 will conclude this month, but the sixth episode of season 2 introduced Baccarin as Sheriff Mickey Fox in the hopes of eventually spinning off the character to her own show.

According to The Hollywood Reporter , that show is officially a go at CBS. The Fire Country spinoff will see Baccarin reprise her role as Sheriff Mickey Fox. The series won't premiere until the 2025-2026 season so that the creators have more time to hone in on the story.

Sheriff Country's Greenlight Will Expand The World Of Fire Country

Crossovers & more spinoffs seem possible.

As Fire Country season 3 has been renewed, the show continues to grow and could even feature more spinoffs in the future. As for Sheriff Country , it's worth noting that pilot episodes can always be a coin flip , but Baccarin's star status could be enough to shepherd the show to longterm success. Work is in place to find a showrunner to helm the series, and if some of the Fire Country alumni can continue to be involved, this bodes well for the future.

With Sheriff Country picked up, there is a good chance the Baccarin could appear in Fire Country season 3 , ahead of her show's official debut in 2025. With reports also confirming that a backup script has been written for the pilot, it is likely that other episodes have been scripted, and this means that the direction of the show will be ironed out in advance. This will give CBS plenty of time to map out the franchise's future as some of their mainstay series like Blue Bloods and Young Sheldon come to an end this year.

Fire Country is available to stream on Paramount.

Of course, the show's chances of success will hinge on being able to find the right showrunner to take it in a compelling direction, but with a year and a half of prep time, it seems that CBS is setting the series up for success. Baccarin currently has several projects in post-production, including Deadpool & Wolverine , and once these are completed, pre-production will likely begin on Sheriff Country .

One of the “Best Worst” ‘Star Trek’ Episodes Recreates the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral

Join the Enterprise in an adventure to Tombstone, Arizona.

The Big Picture

  • An outlandish storyline tests the crew's limits in Star Trek: The Original Series when Melkotians send Kirk and crew to O.K. Corral, Old West.
  • Spock's mind meld convinces the crew that bullets are illusions, saving them in the gunfight.
  • Kirk's refusal to kill during the shootout impresses the Melkotians, leading to Federation unity.

Many television shows have filler episodes or episodes that just don't land with audiences. It happens to the best of them. Friends, Gilmore Girls , Charmed , and Supernatural all have episodes that didn't rate well with their substantial audiences. Even shows with a massive following, like Star Trek , have episodes that have silly plots with a hint of something fascinating hidden within them. Honestly, with plots that are so far-fetched, people love them and continue to come back to them over and over again. The Season 3 episode of Star Trek: The Original Series , entitled "Spectre of the Gun," is noted as one of Star Trek's best worst episodes, which depicts the famous gunfight at O.K. Corral .

Even the toughest episodes have little gems fans are always searching for. In a franchise with a huge cult following, like Star Trek, people often discuss episodes and why they love them or can't stand them. Fans will always find something to enjoy, whether it is an idea within the storyline, a character arc, or a performance by one of the actors. And that's why it's called the best worst episode. With a cast of such iconic characters like Spock , Bones, Kirk, and Uhura, it's hard not to find something to love about the episodes.

Star Trek: The Original Series

In the 23rd Century, Captain James T. Kirk and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise explore the galaxy and defend the United Federation of Planets.

What Happens In 'Spectre Of The Gun'?

In this infamous episode of The Original Series , the USS Enterprise heads into Melkot space. They're greeted by one of the Melkotians who tells them to leave and never return, and that will be their only warning . But of course, being Starfleet, the crew will do anything to prove they come in peace. The starship gets to the planet where Captain Kirk ( William Shatner ) , Spock ( Leonard Nimoy ), Dr. McCoy ( DeForest Kelley ), and Chekov ( Walter Koenig ) go on an away mission to befriend the Melkotians. Things don't go as planned when the Melkotians send the crew to the Old West—specifically, Tombstone, Arizona, on October 26, 1881, on the historical day at O.K. Corral. The crew assumes that the violence of Kirk's heritage is to be the pattern for their execution. Like the historical event, it is the Earps versus the Clantons and McLaurys -the Starfleet officers represent the latter two families- as they duke it out for O.K. Corral via gunfight. However, in not wanting to participate in a shootout, Kirk does everything in his power to convince everyone around him that he isn't one of the Clantons.

Still, no one believes in his wild tale. So, Spock and Bones decide to make some alternate weapons to aid in their advantage because in the original O.K. Corral shootout, the Earps win, and the crew doesn't think the story can be altered. Little do they know that it can be changed. Unfortunately, they find out after Chokov is shot and killed when, in real life, his persona is the only one that survives. They also figure out any devices they create won't work, and if they try to avoid the gunfight, they'll just be transported to the spot. That's when they put the pieces together. Spock says that "where the laws do not operate, there is no reality," meaning that nothing is real; if they don't believe the bullets are real, they can't be killed. Spock also speculates that it was Chekov's mind that killed him, not the bullets. He believed the bullets would kill him, so they did. But how can they go into the shootout with absolute certainty that the bullets won't kill them? The answer is simple. They can't without the help of a mind meld from Spock. So, that's what they do. Spock convinces them with ultimate certainty that nothing is real. Nothing happens to them when they're in the midst of the shootout; then, they get into an all-out brawl before the Melkotians tell Kirk to kill them. Kirk refuses, and the Melkotians see that Starfleet might not be so bad after all. In fact, they are impressed and want to unite with the Federation.

Hidden Gems In One Of The Best Worst Episodes

The outlandish storyline makes you question why—after Kirk and crew intrude into Melkot space—if the Melkotians are so powerful, why don't they smite them where they stand instead of sending them to the O.K. Corral in the Old West? They could have so easily obliterated the Enterprise if they didn't want to make contact at all. However, it was a good idea if they wanted to test the crew. It seems like an outlandish kind of test, but what can you expect? Everyone thinks differently.

But the episode also has some fascinating nuggets, like when Spock's mind melds with everyone to make them believe the bullets of the Earp gang are nothing but an illusion with absolute certainty. This gives the crew members no fear when dealing with the Earps, whereas before, Bones was convinced there was no way they would be able to get through the fight with absolute certainty. Bones is usually the most skeptical with Spock, but he has no problems doing the mind meld, which saves their hides in the end.

Another excellent example of fascination in one of the best and worst episodes is how Kirk and the crew finally get through to the Melkotians by showing they won't kill for revenge , no matter how much they're pressured into it. Just when you thought Kirk might break and kill the Earp brother, he doesn't. Spock even comments on it later on. Kirk responds by saying humans have evolved past the need for violence , which is hopefully the case 100 years in the future. The Melkotians appreciated the gesture and became friends with the Federation.

It's also interesting to note that the budget for this episode was lower than usual. Walter Koenig reminisced that the network had been spending too much money , as seen in the half-built Old West sets, which perfectly fit in with the storyline. Koenig loved the episode for what it gave his character : he gets the girl, dies, and comes back to life all in one episode. Chekov doesn't get the girl often but makes it work in this episode as he soaks up every moment of being fawned over and having someone to fawn over.
