Rick Astley on playing U.S. arenas in 2022: 'How lucky are we?'
29 years after his last hit single in the States, Rick Astley is suddenly on the biggest U.S. tour of his career. From now through July, the British pop crooner will play more than 50 dates, almost all of them in arenas.
He's a special guest on New Kid On The Block's "Mixtape Tour," along with fellow '80s/'90s hitmakers Salt N Pepa and En Vogue.
When The Tennessean reached Astley this week, it was the morning after the tour's opening night in Cincinnati, which closed with him and the rest of the acts singing his signature 1987 hit "Never Gonna Give You Up."
"I kind of love the fact that last night I sung in front of 15,000 people," he says. "...And then today, I'm in Bed Bath and Beyond looking for a coffee machine for the bus. I could be whistling 'Never Gonna Give You Up,' and there's no chance somebody would recognize me."
We doubt that. Thanks to the power of "Give You Up" — which reignited Astley's career in 2008 via "Rickrolling," the internet prank that refuses to die — we'd bet more people on this side of the pond know the 56-year-old than ever before.
Ahead of the tour's stop at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena on Friday, Astley shared a few stories and insights with us — why he joined the tour, his favorite country songs and why it's only natural for music to make you feel nostalgic.
An easy decision: "When this offer came, I talked to my wife and said, 'This tour will go to states that I will never get to play in, and we'll never see unless we're gonna do some crazy road trip.' One of our favorite things to do is toast the sunset with half a glass of Chardonnay before I have to go on, and say, 'How lucky are we?’”
A concert on shuffle: The "Mixtape Tour" takes a non-linear approach. NKOTB are the first to take the stage, and their guests play mini-sets throughout the evening.
"They know what their fans want. And I think they wanted to feel a bit more like a party. It's like your friends made you a mixtape."
"There are lot of artists who hate using the term nostalgia...I'm sorry, if you've got 30 years behind you in music or doing anything, there's some nostalgia to the bigger moments of it. I just don't think it's a dirty word."
Fronting the Foos: "Rickrolling" has led to Astley being asked to surprise audiences in all sorts of places , from TV weather reports to the Macy's Parade.
But the best was a surprise to Astley, too. As he watched Foo Fighters from the side of stage at a 2017 festival in Tokyo, Dave Grohl came over and invited him to sing his signature hit with them — immediately. Astley called it a "mad, wonderful and beautiful experience."
"Obviously those guys are just amazing," Astley says of the band, whose drummer Taylor Hawkins died at age 50 in March. "And heaven knows what's going on in their house right now."
His country side: Ahead of his latest trip to Music City, Astley singles out Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me" (a pop hit penned by country songwriting greats) and Chris Stapleton's "Either Way" as personal favorites.
Not living in the past: In 2016, Astley released his first album in 10 years: "50," it was bit of a musical "bucket list" moment, inspired by his 50th birthday.
"Instead of buying a boat or a Ferrari or crossing America on a Harley Davidson, I wanted to make a record," he says. "And the crazy thing was we had the No. 1 album in the U.K., which is just madness."
Since then, he's put out another successful full-length, a greatest hits collection and a just-released 35th anniversary edition of his debut album, "Whenever You Need Somebody."
If You Go: The Mixtape Tour with New Kids On The Block, Rick Astley, Salt N Pepa and En Vogue comes to Nashville's Bridgestone Arena on Friday. The show starts at 8 p.m., and tickets start at $25.
New Kids on the Block Announce ‘Mixtape 2022’ Tour With Salt-N-Pepa, Rick Astley, En Vogue
By Andy Greene
Andy Greene
The New Kids on the Block are hitting the road for an extensive arena tour in May 2022, and they’re bringing along Salt-N-Pepa , Rick Astley , and En Vogue .
“We had a blast out on the first MixTape Tour in 2019, and can’t wait to take it to another level with our fans on the MixTape Tour 2022,” NKOTB singer Donnie Wahlberg said in a statement. “Just like a mixtape, these shows are going to take audiences through all the emotions. To be able to have Salt-N-Pepa come back and now also have the iconic and legendary Rick Astley and En Vogue join the tour… we could not be more excited. Let’s GO!”
New Kids on the Block have been touring consistently since the original line-up reunited in 2008. Past tours have featured 98 Degrees, Boyz II Men, TLC, Nelly, Paula Abdul, Debbie Gibson, Tiffany, and Salt-N-Pepa. On their recent Mixtape tours, the special guests have come out midway through the New Kids’ show to play mini-sets of their hits rather than a traditional opening act slot.
This time around, expect to hear “Push It,” “Shoop,” “Together Forever,” “Free Your Mind,” “and “My Lovin’ (You’re Never Gonna Get It)” in addition to New Kids standards like “Hangin’ Tough,” “Step By Set,” and “The Right Stuff.” Odds are high that Salt-N-Pepa will perform “Whatta Man” with En Vogue, and don’t be surprised to see some sort of surprise “Rickroll” rendition of “Never Gonna Give You Up.” Find tickets at VividSeats.com .

Multiplatinum selling pop super-group New Kids On The Block continues the party like nobody else can with the announcement of The MixTape Tour 2022 , with their friends Salt-N-Pepa , Rick Astley and En Vogue as legendary special guests.
“We had a blast out on the first MixTape Tour in 2019, and can’t wait to take it to another level with our fans on the MixTape Tour 2022,” Donnie Wahlberg said. “Just like a mixtape, these shows are going to take audiences through all the emotions. To be able to have Salt-N-Pepa come back and now also have the iconic and legendary Rick Astley & En Vogue join the tour… we could not be more excited. Let’s GO!”
The MixTape Tour 2022 is already shaping up to be a can’t miss night out where fans can hear chart-topping hits and legendary catalogues spanning generations all night long. It follows the colossal commercial and critical success of NKOTB’s 2019 tour by the same name – their biggest since reuniting in 2008 – which grossed $53.2 million, sold more than 650,000 tickets and pioneered a super-sized show each night with multiple acts (Salt-N-Pepa, Tiffany, Naughty By Nature and Debbie Gibson) hitting the stage and reimagining what a special guest on a tour could look like.
NKOTB will hit the stage on the MixTape Tour 2022 to perform fan favorite #1 hits like “Hangin’ Tough,” “I’ll Be Loving You (Forever),” and “Step By Step” while tour mates Salt-N-Pepa (“Push It,” “Shoop,” “Whatta Man”), Rick Astley (“Never Gonna Give You Up,” “Together Forever”) and En Vogue (“Don’t Let Go [Love],” “Free Your Mind,” “Give It Up, Turn It Loose,” “Hold On”) keep the party going with music that catapulted them to stardom and solidified their places in music history.
NKOTB most recently returned to the stage for an epic, one night only, sold out performance at Fenway Park on August 6 in their beloved hometown of Boston, MA. Watch a recap HERE . The show marked their first performance in two years, their third show at Fenway Park, and a preview of the explosive live energy from the group that fans can expect from the MixTape Tour 2022.
In 2021, Salt-N-Pepa received a Lifetime Achievement Award. 2022 will kick up with Salt-N-Pepa dedicating their Hollywood Walk of Fame star.
Over the past two years, Rick Astley has amassed million YouTube followers with a series of covers from his studio and become a major force on TikTok with 1.7 million followers. “Never Gonna Give You Up” was recently featured on the critically acclaimed series “Ted Lasso” on Apple TV+ and its video has been viewed more than 1 billion times.
En Vogue celebrated the 30th anniversary of their first album “Born To Sing” on April 3, 2020, when it was reissued on Rhino Records, closed out the 2020 Billboard Music Awards with a performance of “Free Your Mind,” and launched their “Funky Divas” podcast. In March, they appeared with Salt-N-Pepa in “Coming 2 America” for a show-stopping performance of their hit song “Whatta Man” that was aptly titled “Whatta King” and was featured on the film’s soundtrack. In 2018, they released their album “Electric Café,” with a top 10 single (“Rocket”). Recent collaborations have included Snoop Dogg, Raphael Saadiq and Chance the Rapper.

Rick Astley says he's never been cool, and that's OK: 'Nostalgia is not an ugly thing to me'
Rick Astley gets it.
He knows his music – one song in particular – is the backdrop for many a viral video, and even if an undercurrent of mockery exists, at least people are still listening.
Because Astley, 56, is so synonymous with his 1987 smash “Never Gonna Give You Up," and the now famous "Rickrolling" of the song, his raw talent is often overlooked.
His muscular baritone voice has coated a slew of other hits – from the electronic-drum shuffle of “Together Forever” to the plaintive ballad “Cry for Help” – and recent albums “50” and “Beautiful Life” underscore an undiminished voice and robust, melodic songs.
But Astley understands that people who will fill arenas on The Mixtape tour, headlined by New Kids on the Block and featuring En Vogue and Salt-N-Pepa as well as himself, want to revel in the familiar. And he will graciously oblige.
The tour kicked off Tuesday and runs through late July, and Astley, a native of Lancashire, England, is eager to station himself on a tour bus “to watch America go by.” He can’t wait to eat in “one-off town diners” and visit cities he’s never encountered, such as Boise, Idaho.
Astley, eternally good-natured, chatted with USA TODAY about the surprising ways his music is integrated into current pop culture, his love of American R&B and why he accepts having "never been cool."
A Rickrolling primer: Why Rick Astley's song is so ubiquitous
Question: There certainly has been no shortage of uses of “Never Gonna Give You Up,” but its appearance in a funeral scene in “Ted Lasso” was a poignant surprise.
Rick Astley: It’s an amazing episode and I love the show. My wife is my manager, and she had to see the scenes (in advance), but she said, "I can’t let you see it, just watch it." I was really moved by what they did with the song.
Q: Hannah Waddingham (whose character Rebecca sings the song in the episode) is quite a beautiful singer.
Astley: I knew she’d done theater, but it’s one thing to sing on a stage but within TV and the way it’s filmed, it takes some guts to belt it out like that – and a voice. But the scene with "Never Gonna Give You Up" is about the raw emotion. I’ve seen people do God knows what with that song. I was skiing on a boys' trip a few weeks ago, and some of them haven’t seen "Ted Lasso." So we watched (the episode) – which I know is ridiculous to be watching a show with my song in it – and all of us, a bunch of guys on a ski trip having a few drinks, were like (imitates crying).
That's a wrap: "Ted Lasso" team talks about what to expect in Season 3
Q: Your debut album, “Whenever You Need Somebody,” is being re-released (May 20). When you think back to some of those other hits such as “Together Forever” and “It Would Take a Strong, Strong Man,” what memories do they prompt?
Astley: If I’m singing in front of an audience, I’m seeing what they remember. If I can see someone turn to their husband or wife and give a hug, that’s really special and amazing. But the real emotion comes when I’m performing. You’re just part of the wallpaper of music the last decades.
Q: What are you looking forward to on the tour with NKOTB, En Vogue and Salt-N-Pepa?
Astley: I treat this as being an invited guest on an arena tour. I kind of feel all I have to do is show up and do what I’m supposed to. I understand the idea of “Please don’t play Track 3 from Album 2.” Nostalgia is not an ugly thing to me. It’s having beautiful emotions about music you grew up listening to.
Q: When was the last time you played arenas in the U.S.?
Astley: When I came there (in the ‘80s), we did the shed circuit. America has been a big deal in my life. A lot of my favorite singers came from America, and I use the term "taught me to sing." But I think I’m not alone in saying a lot of R&B and soul records, like Luther Vandross , James Ingram, those records were what I was trying to emulate in my way. I was doing it in a northern English, red-haired, freckly sort of way.
Q: What is your reaction when you discover you're a hit on, say, TikTok?
Astley: It’s mad! But that is what the internet has changed for everybody. You used to avoid your parents’ record collection like the plague, and I think that’s sort of dumb. I think the younger generation hears something and if they like it, they don’t care if you’re dead – if they like it, they like it. To have a younger audience get into my songs, you have to see that as kind of a bonus, even if it’s Rickrolling. I've bumped into artists at festivals who weren’t alive when (“Never Gonna Give You Up”) came out, and they don’t disrespect me; I’m allowed to be involved in the world of music today. I would have loved to be cool, but I’ve never been cool, and that’s OK.

The part of the population that is never gonna give the late ’80s and early ’90s up may be delighted by the lineup for a summer 2022 arena tour that will bring together four of the key pop and R&B acts from the era, with headliners New Kids on the Block being joined by Salt-N-Pepa, En Vogue and Rick Astley
Routing announced Monday for the Live Nation-produced “MIxTape Tour 2022” shows the quartet of artists passing through 54 cities in the U.S. and Canada next summer, starting May 10 in Cincinnati and wrapping up July 23 in Washington, D.C. Stops along the way include a May 27 show at L.A.’s Staples Center and a July 24 gig at Newark, NJ’s Prudential Center. (No New York City show is on the agenda.)
All four artists appear on “The Kelly Clarkson Show” today for a “Kelly-oke medley” to tout the tour. (See video below.)
This marks the second “MixTape Tour” NKOTB has embarked on. A 2019 tour under the same banner, celebrating the 30th anniversary of the boy band’s debut album, also featured Salt-N-Pepa, with Naughty by Nature, Tiffany and Debbie Gibson as the remaining acts.
Popular on Variety
NKOTB recently returned from a two-year layoff following the last tour to do a one-off hometown stadium show at Fenway Park Aug. 6.
The enduring popularity of Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up” was recently bolstered by the “Ted Lasso” series being Rick-rolled by the song.
Tickets for all shows go on sale Friday at Ticketmaster.com.

What can I say about Rick Astley? As someone in the audience shouted out last night at his concert
“Astley, you’re quality”! I couldn’t have put it better myself. The show itself was incredible. He sang some old classics & some of his fabulous new songs off his recent album too along with a mashup of George Ezra and Paul Simon which was amazing. A fabulous evening with some good surprises too (the gong especially!). I also enjoyed the witty banter in between songs immensely also. He seems a genuine, witty guy with an incredibly talented team of band members and singers. Fabulous - will definitely be going again, no doubt. If you get the chance to go, do it!!!

What a concert. Fully lived up to my expectations "I heard him in Esbjerg, Manchester and last year in Kbh - I am so fond of his lovely way to be on.
And what an end ,, we just couldn’t get enough. We'll be back Rich Astley - maybe a Friday or Saturday next time?
A slightly disappointing evening with Astley acting like an entertainer instead of the serious wonderful singer he is. The crowd waiting for the 80s hits did not help either.
But when the great songs from 50 were lperformed the band and the great backing vocals made ut worthwhile.

Rick Astley: ‘I’m boring away from the spotlight – that’s why my life works’
The singer, 58, on staying sane, why he isn’t afraid of getting his hands dirty and how the internet gave his most famous song a new lease of life
Being 10 years younger than my older siblings meant I was bombarded with music from a young age. My older sister, Jane, and brother, John, played records relentlessly. My sister was obsessed with Motown, but also prog rock. The first band I ever saw live was Supertramp. My dad ran a little garden centre and it made me realise that if you run your own business, you can run your own life. I inherited his work ethic. We all worked at his garden centre after school and at weekends. I was never frightened of getting my hands dirty, often literally. My parents divorced when I was five and it had a huge impact on me. We lived at my dad’s house for a bit, because my mum had a breakdown. She had five children in total. The middle one, David, died of meningitis. I think she’d had enough and went to live at my grandma’s. The whole experience left me scarred. It made me realise anything can happen at any time and you can’t even rely on the biggest thing you want to count on: your parents being there for you. The internet gave Never Gonna Give You Up a second life. There’s a generation of people whose kids are saying to them, “Oh, I love this tune,” and the parents are going, “How do you even know who this bloke is?” Singing on stage with Foo Fighters was surreal. The first time it happened was at a festival in Japan. Dave Grohl had seen I was on the bill on another stage and, when they were playing, suddenly invited me on to sing Never Gonna Give You Up. I was a bit jet lagged and I’d had a few beers. Then I’m singing my song in front of tens of thousands of people. I’m pretty boring away from the spotlight, but that’s why my life works. When I’m in the spotlight, I’m full of adrenaline and emotion. When I’m off stage, my favourite thing to do is to go for a walk.
My ambition for the future is to remain sane. Seriously. My plan to achieve this is by doing less. One of the pitfalls of a pop career is that you do something exciting and then think, “We have to do it again – but with more lights.” Some artists can do that. Others need to take stock. I think one of the keys to sanity is having a sense of perspective. It can’t all be Glastonbury. I can guarantee that Never Gonna Give You Up will not be played at my funeral. I certainly won’t be playing it and I don’t think anyone else will be playing it either. I don’t even know if I want to be remembered. I think the music almost lives in its own world. I’d prefer to be remembered for being a decent person.

Rick Astley fans let down after thousands of tickets at Manchester arena cancelled at last minute
Rick Astley fans have expressed their anger after they were let down by ticket cancellations just an hour before the singer’s show in Manchester.
Concert-goers planning to attend the gig at the Co-op Live arena took to social media to complain that they had been given the run around on Saturday (20 April).
Astley, who rose to fame in the Eighties with hits such as “Never Gonna Give You Up”, was the first artist to perform at the new 23,500-capacity venue, the UK’s largest arena.
Organisers apologised for deserting fans over the weekend, saying the “difficult” decision to cut capacity was made in order to allow them to test the venue “effectively”.
Fans took to social media to vent their fury after receiving an email about the cancellations.
Byron Edwards, posted on X/Twitter: “Invitational tickets to the test event tonight cancelled just 90 minutes before doors open. What kind of s*** show is this?”
Alison Stafford-Bentley wrote: “Thanks for cancelling tickets for tonight less than an hour before event is due to start. Absolutely fuming.”
“Tonight’s Rick Astley gig gets cancelled at the last minute and all us staff that built it have got email not to turn up,” Michael Phillips tweeted. “Disgraceful, we are fuming.”
The Independent has contacted Astley’s representatives for comment.
Those affected have instead been offered tickets to the Black Keys show next week.
Co-op Live will be officially opened by comedian Peter Kay this Thursday (25 April).
A BBC report of Astley’s show said the arena still has some “ironing out” to do before Kay’s event.
“Some areas weren’t ready, most of the seating wasn’t open, some of the hand dryers in the toilets weren’t working, food was running out… and the queues for food and drink were slightly chaotic,” arts and entertainment correspondent Ian Youngs said.
Meanwhile the main concourse was apparently “busy enough” despite the arena being at less than half capacity: “I really hope the other areas will mean it doesn’t feel overcrowded when it’s fully open and 23,500 people are in here,” he said.
“I guess that’s what test events are for. But there are just three days until it opens for real.”
Those who did manage to get into the event noted similar issues, but expressed their enthusiasm for Astley’s performance.
“Great night last night at Co-op aena live,” Matt Biker wrote on X/Twitter. “Very impressed with the venue and a great sound. Rick Astley stole the show.”
