24 hours in Miami: The perfect one-day itinerary

If 24 hours is all you’ve got for exploring Miami, have no fear: it’s doable, but expect an action-packed day. With year-round sunshine, gorgeous beaches, historic architecture, and rich Latin-influenced culture, Miami has something for every type of traveler. Whether you want to soak up the sun on sandy beaches or party at its famous late-night spots, a trip to Miami can take many different forms. For those looking to get a taste of Miami, this 24-hour itinerary is the perfect mix of relaxation, adventure, culture and nightlife to make your choices easy.

24 hours in Miami

Miami morning.

First things first: the beach. Walk, run or bike along the Miami Beach Boardwalk. Go see Miami Beach’s pastel-colored Art Deco Historic District and famous Ocean Drive. Grab breakfast at Big Pink or a quick cortadito and Cuban toast at Havana 1957 – that Cuban coffee will fuel the exciting day ahead.

At lunchtime, head to Miami Design District, a beautiful haven of design showrooms, galleries, high-end restaurants and haute clothing stores. Grab a healthy lunch at Pura Vida or pizza at Swan. Then, swing by nearby Wynwood and wander through its revered Wynwood Walls, the highest concentration of street art in the country.

Miami Afternoon

Experience Miami’s renowned Cuban culture in Little Havana. Head to Domino Park to watch old-timers play heated games of dominoes. When the clock strikes 3:05 p.m. (a nod to Miami’s first area code), join the locals lining up for café con leche at one of Little Havana’s many “ventanitas,” or little windows for Latin food and drink.

With that extra boost of caffeine, return to South Beach to stroll the shops at Lincoln Road or Española Way. Explore art galleries like Oolite Arts and Britto Central and do a little people-watching at one of the spill-out restaurants or bars on either street.

Miami Evening

A day in Miami wouldn’t be complete without a tasty dinner. During stone crab season, wait in line at iconic Joe’s Stone Crab or steakhouse @orilla.miami and Smith & Wollensky.

Miami Nights

If you’re already on Miami Beach, grab a drink by the Clevelander Hotel pool, where there’s always a party, or dance the night away at one of Miami Beach’s famous nightclubs, like Mynt, STORY or LIV.

Satisfy any late-night cravings at La Sandwicherie open until 5 a.m. on weekend nights.

First-time travelers to Miami will find the city welcoming and catering to tourists. But before you break out your bikini and head to South Beach, take some time to explore other aspects of Miami.

Miami flights give way to Coral Gables and Miami Gardens, which are a short drive from the city center. Little Havana boasts one of the largest Cuban populations in the country. Miami visitors should also reserve a rental car for the duration of their trip. Take a drive through Miami-Dade County and enjoy the largest concentration of Art Deco buildings in the world. Remember that when you see them at Coconut Grove and on South Beach.

Situated eight miles (13km) north-west of downtown Miami, Miami International Airport (MIA) is South Florida’s main airport. Due to a vast number of tourist attractions and sizable local populations, it’s one of the largest hubs in the US and acts as the country’s main gateway to Latin America. Having served just fewer than 36 million passengers in 2010, the airport is the 28th busiest in the world, with flights to Miami International Airport coming in from most continents.

Unfortunately, though, the airport has a reputation for being slow and disorganized, especially when it comes to luggage procedures. Passengers in transit often miss flights as they are required to clear immigration before collecting their baggage, after which they must then transfer it to their connecting flight. Moreover, it’s common practice for staff to remove bags from carousels and place them on the floor, leaving passengers to crowd around heaps of luggage and compete for a chance to locate theirs. Signage is lacking and unclear, and many airport personnel speak Spanish only.

However, MIA has a wide variety of eateries, bars and retail outlets to keep layover passengers amused. Musical performers also provide entertainment throughout the airport’s public spaces and numerous wall paintings add color and vibrancy to the interior of the terminal building.

How to Have a Great First Visit to Miami

Even if you've never been to Miami, you've sort of already been to Miami .

This South Florida city has starred countless times on the silver screen and television and is always coming up in popular music, too, with many of these Miami-centric works becoming downright iconic.

All of this has painted such a vibrant picture of the city, that whether or not you've ever crossed over the city limits, you have years of stored-up visions of what this city will be like when you finally get there.

Considering all of this, when you visit for the first time, there's a bit of pressure to find the Miami you have always envisioned. I recently visited the city for the very first time and the following is an account of how I tried to capture the essence of the city that I had dreamed of while also trying to see a couple of surprises along the way.

Sunrise Start

I know you're on vacation, but you simply have to wake up before dawn and take in a sunrise during your trip to Miami, preferably on your first morning. Darkness gives away to soft light as the sun slowly rises above the Atlantic Ocean , streaking the sky in hues of pink, gold and blue, casting a soft glow over the water and the sand below.

If you're standing on South Beach like I was, odds are you'll be surrounded by a mix of early risers and up-laters all with different motivations for visiting Miami and all pinching themselves that they're taking in this special sight with their own eyes. On your way back from the beach, make sure to grab a photo with one of the iconic neon lifeguard towers—it is the golden hour after all.

Famed for its prime role in revitalizing South Beach during the heady hedonistic days of the '90s, News Cafe  is open 24/7 and located at the heart of South Beach (8th & Ocean Avenue). You’re probably going to pass it anyway so you might as well pull up a chair outside and chill for a bit.

Back in the day, this cafe was frequented by the glamorous, the fabulous and everyone in between as it served up one of the first slices of European cafe culture on South Beach—and today the pulse of the neighborhood still beats strong here.

Enjoy a Cuban Club and a Paper Boy (their take on the bloody mary) as I did, or a frosty, citrusy Frozzie Rossie cocktail as the sidewalk in front of you becomes a runway full of locals on bicycles or rollerblades, wide-eyed tourists, wanna-be influencers and drivers showing off their shiny cars.

Art Deco Up Close

If you're anything like me, you may know that Art Deco is synonymous with South Beach, but do you know the stories behind the style and the facades? That's where the Miami Design Preservation League 's expert guides come in as they take travelers on daily jaunts through the Art Deco District each morning at 10:30 AM. The guides tell the stories behind each building (you'll see Art Deco, Miami Modern and Mediterranean Revival on the tour), endearing you to their efforts to preserve these special buildings.

Eat Old School

For more than a century, Joe's Stone Crab has been drawing in crowds from far and wide for its famed crustaceans and no trip to Miami is complete without a stop here. Located in the vibrant heart of South Beach, Joe's is famed for its succulent stone crab claws plucked from nearby waters, alongside an array of other mouthwatering dishes. Think of it this way: everybody is going to ask you if you went to Joe's, so you might as well!

Eat New School

Sushi may not be the first thing that pops into your head when thinking of Miami, but why wouldn't it be great here? Enter Blue Ribbon Sushi Bar & Grill , which is an oasis of Japanese cuisine situated within the historic Plymouth Hotel South Beach (just past the lush lobby and beside the beautiful pool). The menu is overseen by sushi master Toshi Ueki and chefs Bruce and Eric Bromberg and boasts a tantalizing selection of traditional sushi and sashimi, expertly crafted to perfection. Oh, and there's also a much-loved version of fried chicken. You'll feel cool slinking into one of their booths, but not intimidatingly so.

Say Adios to South Beach

Wynwood. Little Havana. Downtown. Little Haiti. Key Biscayne. Coconut Grove. Coral Gables. It doesn't matter where you go, but you have to get outside of South Beach during your time in Miami because it's only a small—albeit shiny—part of this spectacular city.

My time in South Beach was punctuated with spells in Wynwood and Little Havana, where I was able to get a taste (literally) of two entirely different sections of the city and sip (literally) up slices of its unique story.

Get Out on the Water

If you're wondering when this piece is going to leave dry land, the time is, well, now. I hooked up with Watersports Paradise —known for boat tours, yacht charters and boat rentals in addition to any other active water pursuit you can think of—for an unforgettable adventure through Miami's waterways.

We saw opulent Millionaire's Row and plied the waters across Biscayne Bay to marvel at the splendor of Star, Palm, Hibiscus and Venetian Islands with the occasional burst of speed to get the heart racing. The stories of fun times on Monument Island had me dreaming about the weekends I would spend there if I lived in Miami. And okay, I'll admit it: I set the highlights of this excursion to the "Miami Vice" theme song when I posted it on social media.

Where To Stay in Miami on a First Trip

Before you even touch down in Miami, there's the little decision of where to lay your head. And as one of my previous points makes clear: Miami isn't all beaches. South Beach is just one section of Miami (Miami Beach to be precise) and the city is home to a dizzying array of diverse neighborhoods, all perfect for getting a true feel of the city and almost all could be a great base.

On your first trip, you almost certainly have to stay in South Beach. This neighborhood has captured the world's imagination and so since you're going to want to see what all the buzz is about, you might as well stay there.

When it comes time to start thinking about where and what type of South Beach hotel you'd like to stay in during your first trip to Miami, among the factors that loom large, two words stand head and shoulders above the rest: Art Deco.

I mean, you can't come to Miami for the very first time and not stay in a historic hotel with the flourishes of Art Deco design, can you? And the hotel certainly has to have a fantastic pool, right?

I couldn't imagine it any other way and so that's why I'm glad I posted up at The Plymouth Hotel .

Located a stone's throw from the Miami Beach Convention Center and opposite Collins Park and its superb Bass Museum, The Plymouth Hotel South Beach is a rock star. So much so that Barbara Baer Capitman used a photograph of the corner exterior of The Plymouth on the cover of her 1988 book Deco Delights . Stepping inside, you're immediately enchanted by the seamless blend of historic Art Deco charm and contemporary luxury and with over 100 rooms splashed with sophisticated touches, The Plymouth offers the perfect blend of boutique and beach-adjacent vibes.

Here, you can indulge in a tropical-elegant ambiance and enjoy exclusive access to the hotel's private beach, just a block away between The W and The Setai. Like many great hotels, the lobby is perfect for lingering. Here, you can hang among lush leaves and a stirring mural by the acclaimed Ramon Chatov while watching the happenings at the bar or the aforementioned Blue Ribbon Sushi.

Then there's the 1940s Art Moderne pool area, one of the most perfectly formed bodies of water in the city. With its distinctive harlequin tiles and inviting peach and brown colors, it's a quintessential Miami backdrop. (Go on, strike a pose.) Like many first-time visitors to Miami, I left knowing this certainly wouldn't be my last visit and the Plymouth's pool was a big reason why.

In summary, to live up to the level of hype that has been thrust upon Miami is almost impossible, but this city made it look like a breeze.

Explore Miami.

Surprisingly, Miami's temperate weather and beachfront beauty aren't the reasons this town is called Magic City. This nickname got started when snowbirds noticed the population explosion that started in the 1940s. Since then, Miami has continued to grow into a major center for commerce and culture. It has served as the entry point to the States for many, making it a city that celebrates its diversity and offers a rich mix of cultures, arts, and cuisines.

When you tour the Art Deco District, you'll find a unique take on the bright building colors so often found in tropical locations. This historic area has the largest collection of Art Deco buildings in the world, many with pastel accents and other details that make them distinctive among other examples of Art Deco architecture. The Miami Beach Art Deco Museum can tell you more about how this building style embodied resilience and optimism during the tight times of the Great Depression. Today this area is celebrated as one of the most glamorous spots in the world for nightlife, beaches, and shopping.

Whether you want to hit clubs to dance all night long or simply want a quiet moonlit walk along the beach, Miami can offer you both activity and relaxation, day or night. Explore museums to learn about local artists and history and be sure to check the local event calendars for food and wine festivals, fashion shows, conventions, and expos. Catch a concert or live performance and top everything off with delicious meals. From classic Southern comfort food to traditional Cuban dishes and Floribbean cuisine, you'll find flavors to suit any palate.

Top 5 airlines serving from Miami to Spain

They gave my seat away although it was a connecting flight with them and the flight was a bit delayed.

Ac was broken so we deplaned, waited 2 hours, taxiing for takeoff they said the plane would not fly so we went back to the gate and got a new plane which took another hour. In all a 4 hour delay for an 80 min flight.

Horrible people at the gate, they force me to check in my carry on, even thought no one behind me has to do it. I had to get out of the airport in NY to get my bag and go thru security again on my way to Honk Kong. The worst part is the employee threatened me with loosing the flights if don’t comply.

Terrible, oxygen masks were deployed mid-flight. We returned to airport. Took additional 12 hours to get home.

Was flying in premium eco and there were around 5-6 movies I wanted to watch and none of those could I play for some reasons. Not just me we checked w the person sitting next to me. Few of the movies were only playable :( Also that was not great that we couldn't upgrade to business however tried to, many times before the flight :(

Horrible. Flight was delayed and very bumpy. I was super unhappy

The agents at the gate were rude. The stwards were pleasant. The seats were comfortable. The tray table had crumbs on it. A passenger talked constantlt and very loudly for the entire flight annoying many passengers. The stewards did not ask her to speak in a lower voice but my travel partner did.

I grand parents didn’t receive any special treatment they are seniors even i ask for wheelchair

Literally the worst experience ever and I had my service dog with me. Flight was supposed to leave at 1:51 PM but the plane arrived late. They boarded us around 3 PM and kept us on the plane for an hour saying that due to weather conditions in Miami, we could not takeoff yet. After waiting for an hour, they deplaned. And then they will not give us our bags back that we could just leave and schedule for another flight. Every hour they kept updating saying we have to wait another hour without any explanation as to what was going on. Eventually, I went to customer service to change my ticket, but by the time I made it to the front of the line, they started boarding my flight again. And then when we got onto the flight, they said there were two flight attendants That were past their shift. They kept us on the plane for about another 40 minutes until they told us they had no other flight attendance and had to deplane again. Then I gave us hotel vouchers and told us we would be on a flight at 6 AM the next day. At this point it is about 9 PM. I get to the hotel with my dog, who hasn’t been able to go potty for about eight hours. When I arrived at the hotel, I got a text alert saying my flight has been canceled at 6 AM and they moved past to 5 AM, however the hotel shuttle doesn’t leave early enough to make it to the airport for 5 AM flight. So me and some other passengers got a cab after about three hours of sleep to get back to the airport. This was the worst experience ever.

Flight delayed 3 times due to maintenance (on exact same plane that had just brought us from Boston to Miami). Eventually changed to a different plane and gate.

Seats comfortable on economy plus and attendants very helpful. Food was ok. Bathrooms needed servicing.

Good food, prompt and timely flight, good on-board personnel

Thankful for 2-4-2 economy seating. Food was ok. Free beer & wine in economy was nice. Served hot dinner, mud- flight snack and pre-arrival ham sandwich. Seat with pillow & blanket. Reasonable movie options. Overall, a good experience. IBERIA APP is terrible terrible terrible.... needs to get upgraded to equivalent of TAP Airlines App. No option to bid or request an upgrade. Very disappointing.

I liked the friendly crew and desk staff, all very helpful. I was surprised and a little annoyed on my outbound flight from LGW to MCO as I had prepaid and booked my seat, which was all correct at check in on my boarding pass. when I got on the plane someone was in my seat ! I was moved to another seat. The food choice is quite limited and I feel that an option of a muffin for breakfast snack would be welcomed, not everyone wants egg or bacon wrap. The choice of entertainment is good, plenty to keep you busy on a long haul flight. I liked the option offered to have the cabin bag checked into the hold, it saved me as an older, lone traveller lifting my case into the overhead locker or finding there was no space.

My luggage did not get to my Miami destination/home. I am waiting for it 24 hours later.

The only comment I have is why do you sell snacks on board? They should be free. When we take domestic flights here in US, our snacks are free. Also, please communicate with me in English. I received so many emails way before my flight that were in Spanish that I had to ask my son to interpret for me. You should be WELL AWARE if the customers you are communicating speak the language, it does mean that we speak and understand Spanish because we are traveling to Spain, NOT NECESSARILY! Thank you!

Flight was delayed by well over an hour. Communication was terrible.

I like the team but I don't like the food you provided with money. I want free food and free water.

An average flight experience. For our transatlantic portion, they provided a main meal and two snacks. However, the food was not very tasty and the drinks far too small and infrequent for such a long flight. The regrettable part of the flight was that the toilets were extremely filthy. I feel this is unacceptable.

Both flights were delayed. I lost my connection on the way back. No voucher or anything was givenx I had business ticket and no support to make it on time. I got to the door running 5 min after they close. Food really bad. Breakfast in business was worst that I what I remember in economy. Even though I have accumulated many miles, I don’t think Inwill keep buying Iberia. I am a frequent business traveler.

Delayed takeoff was inconvenient. We should have boardrd later. Coffee/ beverage service on a 7:30 flight would have been good.

Flight from Lisbon to Barcelona was ok. Business flight Boston to Lisbon was awful. Attendants should pay more attention to Business Passengers and not be so stingy with water. Worse Business Flight I have ever taken. Food was awful. Cramped for space.

I thought Miami's airport was very disorganized during the Boarding.

Very efficient boarding - other airlines could learn from them. Friendly, efficient crew. Red eye flight, so dinner meal was irrelevant. Breakfast could have been more substantial. Seats reasonably comfy.

Disastrous boarding. Entered air bridge only to descend stairs and enter a bus. Plane had insufficient storage, was old and chair recline was damaged. Air stewardess was sullen.

Perfect although it took an hour to board the plane but other than that it was great

The flight crew was good, the flight itself was quick and comfortable

Boarding was late by 30 min due to a bus missing to take us to the plane... And then the flight was delayed by about 90 minutes, in a 60 min flight

The quality of the aircraft and the professionalism of TAP's staff were perfect. The quality of vegan meals can be hit or miss depending on the airline and the city of departure; on this flight, our vegan meals were quite good. The boarding process for the connecting flight in Lisbon could have been organized a bit better, but it did not spoil our overall experience with TAP, which was excellent. I'd definitely recommend TAP to others.

TAP Air makes you take a bus on arrival or departure, making it difficult for passengers to make connections.

The flight, the staff and the airplane were all fantastic. I highly recommend.

Boarding, crew and flight were very smooth and efficient. It was a bit difficult to understand the announcements on board, but it is a minor thing. What was quite bad was the very long time it took to retrieve the luggage at the Frankfurt airport.

Service on plane was appalling. Cabin crew did not want to help with anything. Window darkening screen did not work so we had to sit in the sun for a few hours until it went down. TV screen did not work and cabin crew just shrugged their shoulders and did not care. We waited for over 2 hours for headphones so we could try watch one screen between 2 people. We had to go to back of plane to request basic water as crew never responded to call request. Will be letting many others know to warn them off ever using Air Europa. Total disaster of their own making

Terrible app. Working off paper stickies for seat reservations doesn’t work anymore.

Impossible to check in via the App. Kept on getting emails offering upgrade. When followed through not available. Wasn't any food anyway.

Place above head to place the rucksack in is smaller than in other planes, so it needed to be located under the front seat.

Seats on the plane were too uncomfortable for a 9 hour trip, especially when the flight was completely full. Crew treated passengers as if we were cattle. Desperate rush to get food served so they could enjoy First class food at the back of the plane... I went twice to the back of the plane (no one answered the flight attendant button) to ask for coffee and was met with a very abrupt response... 'YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR IT'. The only thing staff could think of saying to me was 'la mascarilla senior!'.... In a way I do not blame Air Europa for getting away with this lamentable service, they are one of only two carriers flying between Spain and Venezuela so do not have any competition... I do not think they would dare offer the same service on a flight from London to Los Angeles!

- OK plane. Basic accommodations. OK food. The digital window shade wasn't working.

- OK plane. Basic accommodations. OK food. The digital window shade wasn't working. - Expect to be woken up more than an hour before landing when they start dinging the bell and making announcements and turning on all cabin lights to serve a snack. I would prefer they remain quiet and only serve people who want to wake up.

Better food and more space in the seats. Also when doing the web check in both times I was going in to your site the minute you open it and there is not really many seats to choose only to buy!!!

It was ok, not as good as it used to be. The Heathrow connection was a disaster - complete anarchy, unknowledgable and skimpy assistance and signage. Gate crew at next flight was great, held the flight while my wife struggled through security.

It was great! The seats were comfortable, and they fed me during the transatlantic flight, something which I have been missing out on for the past 3 years as I travel to and from school.

This flight was cancelled at the last minute. We were rebooked on another flight but a day later. We lost a day of our vacation and paid for a night in a hotel we couldn’t use. The flights we were rebooked on (both American) messed up our seating on both flights-we didn’t get the seats we had paid for. All in all, a terrible experience.

Lost our luggage in Heathrow. Showed up 3 days into a 7 day vacation. Very inconvenient and disappointing!!

Lost our bags in Heathrow, We didn’t receive bags in Mallorca for 3 days, out of a 7 day cycling vacation. Really inconvenient and disappointing!

Our luggage is missing. We are at the Hotel Gran Via in Barcelona

We missed the flight to Barcelona because the flight from Baltimore was delayed. We flew on Vueling VW6653. Our luggage didn’t arrive. Please help us get our luggage. We are staying at Hotel Gran Via in Barcelona
