Linkin Park is a nu metal alternative rap-rock band formed by high school buddies Mike Shinoda, Rob Bourdon, and Brad Delson. Based in an outer suburb of Los Angeles, US, the band first began making music in Mike Shinoda’s bedroom in 1996.

After changing their name twice and recruiting several new members, including current vocalist Chester Bennington, the band settled on the name Linkin Park and began recording much of the material for their debut album “Hybrid Theory”, which was released shortly after the band signed with Warner Brothers in 1999.

“Hybrid Theory” was a breakthrough success for Linkin Park and quickly sold almost five million albums in its first year, with single “One Step Closer” demonstrating Chester Bennington’s dynamic vocal range and style. Linkin Park’s ability to bring nu metal to a mainstream, radio-listening audience has meant that the release of its five subsequent studio albums has bought the band ever-increasing success, and has turned Linkin Park into one of the most successful rock bands of the new millennium.

Singles “In the End” and “What I’ve Done” have been hugely successful across the globe and have demonstrated the band’s range and growth over the years. Linkin Park’s influences come from various sources, but Mike Shinoda has noted that Public Enemy has been a huge inspiration to them. The band has attempted to emulate Public Enemy’s three-dimensional sound by experimenting with the interplay between Mike Shinoda’s rap, Chester Bennington’s melodic rock voice and the band’s accompanying hard rock sound.

Linkin Park has collaborated with numerous other artists over the years including Jay-Z, Busta Rhymes, and Steve Aoki, among others. The versatility of their music has won them fans all over the world and it is no surprise that Linkin Park was the first rock band to attain over one billion views on YouTube.

In addition to this, the group has won two Grammy Awards and multiple MTV awards for their extensive discography. No strangers to hard work, the band has toured extensively promoting their own albums as part of their own Projekt Revolution – which has featured acts such as Snoop Dogg and Cyrpess Hill – and to raise money for various charitable causes over the past few years. With this level of talent and such a strong work ethic, one thing is for sure: Linkin Park won’t be going away anytime soon.

Live reviews

I've been a fan of Linkin Park since junior high when my brother introduced me to 'Numb.' Years later and I've only grown fonder.

Needless to say the band's phenomena has only progressed, following the unforgettable first impression of their debut album 'Hybrid Theory,' which ultimately was the result of Linkin Park's international fame and rise on the Billboard charts.

With an original classified adaptation of Nu Metal and Rap Metal genres, Linkin Park surprised us all with their intensely unique style of layered mix as heard in 'Hybrid Theory' and 'Meteora.' Linkin Park blew fans away with their shift of ever changing musical styles with the making of 'Minutes to Midnight' evidentially to explore a wider variation of musical types leading up to 'A Thousand Suns' in 2010 with an unforgettable display of layering in their music through more electronic sounds and beats. 'Living Things' displayed a spectacular blast of the past along with new hits that lead into the return of a heavier rock production as featured in Linkin Park's newest album, 'The Hunting Party.' The band has collaborated with many other additional bands, including rapper and vocalist; Mike Shinoda's, Fort Minor and most notably with rapper Jay-Z in the mashup EP 'Collision Course' further displaying a more intricate style through remix albums 'Reanimation' and 'Recharged.'

Album after album, I can definitely say I've been through it all. Linkin Park continues to progress tremendously through time and I could not be any more thrilled. The band is a perfect combination of bitter-sweet lyrics and vibrant melody - a package that has yet to displease.

Linkin Park put on a breathtaking show...literally! I could not be any more thrilled with my experience. Linkin Park has a style of music that truly feeds to all groups in a way that is both soul filling and exuberant . Each performance delivers it's own value of uniqueness, varying from mashups of songs such as 'Shadow of the Day,' 'Leave Out All The Rest,' and 'Iridescent' to an unforgettable 'Catalyst' chorus in the 'Bleed it Out' encore finale that will literally leave you numb. Linkin Park is truly a prize in music that have kept fans, as myself from ever intending to runaway.

Linkin Park were great, very professional and experienced. Also very measured and organised. There was no place for much improv or solos.

However, they chose to open with their new track and that was risky. What really killed it was the unbelievably dismal sound system at the O2. When you consider the price of the ticket and the fact that a few month before I went to see BMTH in the same venue and more or less the same seat, and came out deaf (but happy), it was utter shock to have to squint to hear the first 5 tracks.

As a result, I have never seen 20,000 people listening to a rock concert SO quietly and still. 20 minutes in, the whole thing looked like dead fish; some of the song completely inaudible... then they switched off the sound system and let the 20K fans sing. The concert finally started. The whole room erupted, finally able to let go of the pressure and clearly making more noise than the speakers ever did untill then...

After that, the sound was on and off but generally better and Linkin Park kept to their line.

In fact, they were faultless until the end.

Maybe MSG should knock at Mike Shinoda's changing room one night...?

Wow. That's all I'd put, but I need at least 200 words. This was my very first concert, but it blew past all of my expectations. I've watched snippets of LP concerts on YouTube, but the live experience is unlike any other. My favorite song, Faint, was amazing. They did the entire song, and had a full guitar solo after the bridge. Chester and Mike seemed to work extremely well together on stage, and they just tore it up.

Somewhere near the middle of the show, Mike rapped parts of his popular songs by Fort Minor, his secondary band. They also slowed it down to play Leave Out All the Rest and Shadow of the Day. The Hybrid Theory songs, such as In The End, One Step Closer, Forgotten, With You, Points of Authority, and Cure For the Itch got the entire crowd going nuts, and it will be a night I'll remember for the rest of my life.

Make sure you at least know the words to their popular songs, because singing along with the band is a great time; just prepare to lose your voice! If you ever have the chance to attend a Linkin Park concert, don't hesitate. You won't regret it.

I have seen Linkin Park 11 times and by the end of Summer 2014, I'll be up to 14 shows.

The reason why I am always so eager to see Linkin Park live is something that can't be explained by simply one element. Upon arriving to the show, you can literally feel the energy from the LP fans in the air which always hypes me up. Their fans are always so excited and eager for the show that you can't help feeling exactly the same way. Once the band takes the stage it is electrifying. Their entrance to the stage is never the same, they change up their set lists while on tour - so you are always in for a surprise - and their live performance is incredible. The amazing light show, fireworks and actual fire manipulations, complement the music in such a way that you can't help but feel the chills when you experience Linkin Park live.

I will always recommend seeing Linkin Park live because not only is their music legendary but so is the hard work that goes into their live show by not only themselves, but their entire crew.

Great performance, really enjoyed the show, can't wait for them to tour again.

My only complaint is the security controlling the queues outside were very hectic.

I was told to stand in one queue after waiting 30 minutes I finally got inside the building. The lady scanning the tickets said I couldn't come in this way, she did not give a reason why? I then had to queue around the other side of the building for another 20 or so minutes, this resulted in me missing the first 3 songs. I am very disappointed as not only was I missing the band but the fact I had paid extra to get to the front however I was pretty far back due to the mess in queuing... Not happy there.

However, the bad itself was amazing, I definitely recommend seeing them!x

Best concert I have ever seen! So much energy and played a great mix of new and old songs. Less than a week ago I saw Godsmack in Sacramento and that was the worst show I've seen (still love the old music). I would see Linkin Park again any time they are close to Bay area. Concord Pavilion got a lot of bad reviews on Yelp but I have to say I was very impressed and will keep going back. Linkin Park played for a long time and I'm still thinking about the concert 24 hours later. Can't wait to see them again in 2015 if they your again. 30 Seconds to Mars opened for them and they killed it too. Loved when Jared Leto went way back to the back of the pit and sang directly to a handicapped kid.

Sum 41 was allright, unfortunately the vocals were a bit suppressed by the instruments. Linkin Park however, was absolutely amazing. The setlist was perfect. The best of every album with some amazing vocals from the lead singer Chester. Last time I went, they skipped some parts of some songs because they wanted to play as many songs as possible. Thank god they didn't commit to this kind of performance.

They were fantastic, great atmosphere, they sound amazing while performing live and they have a wide range of genres. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is doubting if it's worth the money. They rocked their way to my heart, and I will most definitely come again next time.

At first there was much caos at the enter, but then we all found a good way to go orderly into the Autodromo. We were about 80.000 people, all fascinated by the perfect acoustic the stage offered and the beauty of that waiting for a big event.

And then They arrived. Linkin Park started playing their works of art without a minute of delay (although I'm not so tall and I had to climb up to see the big screens...). All was perfect. The whole public was one only person who sang together with the Linkin. We all were breathing a splendid atmosphere of sharing.

It's been a beautiful 2 hours no stop concert.

Linkin Park were amazing! It was like taking a trip down memory lane with every song they played. You tend to forget how many great songs they have and as they played each one I couldn't help but be transported back in time to 2001. They were interactive with the crowd and just full of so much energy. Definitely worth it. 30 Seconds to Mars opened for them and they were just as amazing. Jared Leto even came into the crowd and sang. At one point he pulled a little girl out of the crowd and serenaded her. It was an amazing experience and I'd see both bands again in a heartbeat.

North American Tour 2004

Introduction.

The Meteora North American Tour ran from January 16th to March 15th of 2004, making it one of Linkin Park's largest tours ever in North America. The show consisted of thirty five shows across The United States and Canada. Many dates on the tour were completely sold out, also making the tour one of Linkin Park's most successful North American tours.

Before the tour

Linkin Park ended 2003 by playing the KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas in Universal City, CA. The band then took a few weeks off and got ready for the Meteora North American Tour.

During the LPTV episode for the tour, it revealed that the rehearsal for the tour took place in Washington, D.C. Phoenix commented about the rehearsal during the LPTV episode, saying, "I think it's probably 1:30. This is what we call an all nighter. Just when I thought I was done with them when finishing school and now we're doing all nighters for shows."

The band used one setlist for the entire tour, with P5hng Me A*Wy being dropped at two of the shows for an unknown reason. The 2003 setlists all opened with Don't Stay, so Linkin Park went back to their Hybrid Theory-era opener for this tour, choosing to start with the oldschool run of With You, Runaway, and Papercut at the start of the setlist.

The UK November 2003 setlist was very similar to this one, but the band changed a few things. Papercut opened that setlist into Points Of Authority, followed by Don't Stay and Somewhere I Belong, with With You and Runaway further down in the set. This North American Tour setlist was just a jumbled order from that, and a longer intro added for the show-opening With You. "Rarities" on this tour included Nobody's Listening, which was dropped after the tour, It's Goin' Down in the full-band form for the first time on a North American Tour since 2002, and My December, which was not played again after this tour until Japan 2006.

Members of the different bands on the tour also frequently came out for One Step Closer which closed the set.

The tour kicked off in Fairfax, VA on January 16th. The tour featured a kabouki (a curtain) at the front of the stage, which Linkin Park brought back again later for Projekt Revolution in 2007. LP also frequently brought up a fan from the crowd to play Faint with them on guitar. This happened at many of the shows on the tour.

The tour featured several dates in Canada, three to be exact, which took place in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver. Mike had this to say about it during an interview, "On this tour we've got three dates in Canada which is nice, we're trying to get up here a little bit more. Even with the weather, we made it up."

At the Long Beach, CA show of the tour, Chester was sick. He had the crowd sing most of some songs, like Breaking The Habit, Numb, and Crawling, and even apologized to the crowd for his performance. My December and P5hng Me A*wy were dropped from the setlist.

Linkin Park had to cancel the next show of the tour in Inglewood, CA due to Chester falling ill, saying, "We deeply regret that the show at the Great Western Forum in Inglewood has been postponed. Chester is ill with bronchitis and acute laryngitis and has been advised not to perform."

Later in the day, Warner Bros. put out a press release saying, "LINKIN PARK vocalist Chester Bennington is ill with bronchitis and acute laryngitis and has been advised not to perform. Rest assured the show has been rescheduled for Monday, March 15, 2004, and your SAME TICKETS WILL BE HONORED FOR THE RESCHEDULED DATE. We are very sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused and we wish Chester a speedy recovery. As of now all other shows on this tour are still scheduled as planned."

The band made up the date, tacking a new show in Inglewood on the end of the tour on March 15th. Two days after the cancellation, the band members made an appearance at the Grammy Awards on February 8th.

P5hng Me A*Wy was dropped at the Nashville, TN and Lexington, KY stops of the tour for an unknown reason.

The end of the tour's routing was changed after the initial announcement, with the southeastern shows slightly being shifted to new dates. This resulted in the originally-announced show in Pensacola, FL to be dropped from the tour.

Linkin Park ended the tour in Inglewood, CA on March 15th. Chester talked about his recent eye surgery and said it was the first time he’s ever been able to see anyone in the crowd.

Memorable Moments

Brad and Phoenix routinely swapped instruments when they played Nobody's Listening.

Linkin Park covered Are You Gonna Be My Girl? by Jet on the St. Paul, MN stop of the tour. This was the first and only time that the band has ever played the song live. The story is that Chester and the rest of the band dared Mike to go out onstage by himself dressed in clothes that Jet wears for the encore and play Are You Gonna Be My Girl?. He did it and even stayed dressed in those clothes for the rest of the show! There are several pictures of Mike on guitar and Mike on piano on My December dressed in those clothes.

Before the encore of the Tacoma, WA show, Mike announced a portion of the show's proceeds would be donated to the Pacific Northwest Research Institute for cancer research. The donation was in memory of a friend of the band named Rob, who passed away due to cancer.

Something funny happened on the Sunrise, FL date of the tour. As usual, the band brought up a fan to play guitar on Faint. The first guy they pulled up lied and said he couldn't play it. The band let him stand on the side of the stage for the rest of the show since it was birthday, but in the middle of the song, he runs from the side of the stage and tries to sing at Mike's micstand. Out comes Sean, Brad's guitar tech, who puts him in a headlock and drags him away!

Another funny thing happened on the Atlanta, GA date of the tour. Many members and crew from other bands on the tour came out on One Step Closer with giant inflatable penises and other inappropriate apparel on. A dog was even on stage. You can see a recap of it all in the LPTV episode for the tour.

During the final show in Inglewood, CA, the band celebrated Chester and Joe's birthdays. Joe got a cake for his birthday and threw it into the pit audience. Chester's actual birthday is March 20th, however.

Collaborations

Each night of the tour, various members of the bands on the tour would come out for One Step Closer. Sonny Sandoval of P.O.D. joined the band frequently, as well as Doug Robb from Hoobastank and Dan Marsala of Story Of The Year. Some of the shows featured a combination of two to three of the vocalists, while some shows only featured one of them.

Touring Bands

Linkin Park, P.O.D., Hoobastank, Story Of The Year

Phoenix had this to say about the tour during an interview, "It's been great so far. This is the end of the first week so we got about five shows done under our belts and everything's finally coming together with the tour. But I would say the biggest thing to say right now is that people should get there early because Story Of The Year has just been setting the bar high early. For us, they're a band that we really liked their CD and we had heard they were good live but hadn't gotten a chance to see 'em so we brought 'em out on tour. From the first night on they're just killing it."

Mike also had this to say during the same interview, "I think it's a great show from beginning to end, even if just to go to watch it with putting us aside, you know, I really like those three bands a lot. We were talking to some of the other guys the other night, everybody's really happy and Doug Robb from Hoobastank came in our dressing room and said this was one of the best tour's he's ever been on. He said THE best tour but it's not over yet."

Cancelled Shows

Inglewood, CA was postponed but rescheduled for the end of the tour.

The Pensacola, FL show did not occur after the tour was rerouted.

Despite several shows being recorded, no songs were ever released professionally from the tour.

Several videos from the tour were uploaded to YouTube by the lighting director at the time: Points Of Authority from the Toronto, ON as well as With You from the San Diego, CA stop of the tour.

Watch Linkin Park’s Powerful, Star-Studded Concert Honoring Chester Bennington

By Steve Appleford

Steve Appleford

An emotional peak came early in Friday night’s tribute concert to the late Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington at the Hollywood Bowl. At center stage was a microphone stand, draped with a garland of flowers, alone in the spotlight –the crowd of more than 17,000 sang the chorus to the music of “Numb.” The tone was joyous and defiant. Bennington’s absence was never felt more deeply.

“I don’t have the words,” said Mike Shinoda, the band’s rapper and musical leader, as he greeted the sold-out audience of Linkin Park fans, many of whom flew in from other states, other countries. “I don’t think any of us do.”

What followed was nearly three hours of music in tribute to the band’s soulful lead singer, whose vocal performances were a balance of rage and vulnerability. Mourning his suicide in July at age 41, Linkin Park reconvened for their first performance since his death to celebrate – with some famous friends – the music he left behind.

Shinoda was the night’s host, leading his fellow bandmates Rob Bourdon, Brad Delson, Dave Farrell and Joe Hahn through a daunting, yet significant event.

Among the guests was Blink-182, who had been set to tour with Linkin Park this year. Led by new singer Matt Skiba at the mic, they dove into their own “I Miss You,” as Travis Barker attacked his drums with a driving, dynamic beat. They were joined by members of Linkin Park as Blink’s Mark Hoppus sang a more anxious take on their “What I’ve Done.”

M. Shadows of Avenged Sevenfold raged through “Burn It Down,” in dark aviators and backwards cap. With Avenged guitarist Synyster Gates, the metal singer and Shinoda ripped into “Faint,” and Shadows howled Bennington’s angry, throat-ripping hook: “Don’t turn your back on me/ I won’t be ignored!”

A lesser-known guest rocker was Takahiro “Taka” Moriuchi of ONE OK ROCK, offered one of the night’s truest echoes of Bennington, roaring into the mic, leaping into the air for “Somewhere I Belong.” Shinoda slashed on guitar beside him.

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

A late addition to the lineup was Sum 41 singer Deryck Whibley, in spiky blonde hair, quickly taking charge shouting, “Linkin Park family, hello! We’re family right? So let’s sing it like family. All right?!” He sang “The Catalyst,” wandering the stage anxiously and singing the Bennington line, “Lift me up, let me go!”

For much of the night, Linkin Park were accompanied by a string quartet. The band’s muscular early hits were well represented, performed with the help of some legit hard rock players (such as members of System of a Down) and proven shouters, including Korn’s Jonathan Davis, whose performance of 2000’s enraged “One Step Closer” was ideally suited to the material. But this was the Linkin Park of 2017, whose newest album, One More Light , was understated and melodic, a direction also championed by Bennington.

That album’s warm, embracing title song provided a theme for the night. During his final tour with the band, his performances of “One More Light” became a moment of communion with fans, as the song began: “Should’ve stayed. Were there signs I ignored?/ Can I help you not to hurt anymore?”

At the Bowl, Linkin Park performed it again, without guests, with Shinoda at a keyboard center stage, as the crowd lifted their cell phones to create a field of stars, another emotional peak.

Some of the concert’s early performances were understandably subdued, compared to the band of its earliest nu-metal tours. There were some unexpected guest turns that took the LP sound in new directions, including Alanis Morissette, who was joined by the dudes of No Doubt for “Castle of Glass.” She also performed a new, unreleased song of her own, “Rest,” focused on the pressures of public life.

The Results Are In: Kendrick Lamar Won the Great Rap War

Trump posts — then deletes — rant about stormy daniels testifying, everything that's happened in the drake-kendrick beef, tommy lee wins round in helicopter sexual assault lawsuit.

On “Waiting for the End,” Shinoda was joined on pop vocals by Sydney Sierota of Echosmith, singing a heartfelt “So many things were left unsaid/ It’s hard to let you go.” There were video testimonials from the likes of Paul McCartney, Metallica and Jared Leto, and a large selection of Bennington footage on and offstage.

Midway into the concert, Shinoda described the moment he learned of his singing partner’s death, and he shared the song “Looking for an Answer,” which he said was written just eight days later. It was in its early stages, still a stripped down piano ballad. And while Shinoda played, he heard his friend’s voice echoed by thousands in the stadium, raging loud and clear.

Linkin Park

Best-selling alt-metal veterans Linkin Park are certainly no strangers to the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 , having previously visited the region 10 times since their early-’00s breakout. But their No. 38 debut for new single “Lost” this week still feels particularly noteworthy, for a few reasons.

Linkin Park’s ‘Lost’ Is First Song to Debut at No. 1 on Rock & Alternative Airplay in Over…

Trending on billboard.

1. The No. 38 debut for “Lost” marks Linkin Park’s first Hot 100 top 40 hit in over a decade, since “Burn It Down” hit No. 30 in 2012. On a scale from 1-10, how surprised are you that this song was able to make such an immediate chart impact?

Katie Atkinson : Living in L.A. and still hearing Linkin Park in hourly rotation on KROQ, it’s a 1 for me. There are a lot of stations across the country that never stopped playing them, so it’s no surprise that a song recorded during sessions for their first Billboard 200 No. 1 album would still fit right in on a lot of radio (and now streaming) playlists 20 years later. It feels like a perfect gift for anyone still mourning Chester’s premature death, or for younger fans who just discovered the band’s music.

Josh Glicksman : Somewhere hovering around a 4. Given the band’s longstanding success at radio, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that the single would find a quick home at the format. Sure enough, “Lost” became just the fourth song ever to debut atop  Billboard ’s Rock & Alternative Airplay chart, with notable entries on many other airplay rankings in the genre. Combined with its appearance on several curated streaming playlists and a reliable, eager fan base, No. 38 is probably a bit higher than I expected, but certainly not shocking.

Joe Lynch : I think a six on first blush, but then a three when I think about it in context. It’s perhaps worth an eyebrow raise that Linkin Park is back on the Hot 100’s top 40 for the first time since 2012, but when you account for it being a song recorded for a beloved album featuring late vocalist Chester Bennington released in this streaming era, it makes a lot more sense.

Andrew Unterberger : An 8. It’s easy to look at this at a glance and think, “Well, of course a recently uncovered peak-era song from one of the most popular bands of the last three decades would do well.” But this really doesn’t happen that often — you kinda have to go back to Nirvana’s “You Know You’re Right” in 2002 to find another posthumously released rock song with this kind of immediate impact, and even that song was less than a decade old, not 20 whole years. Plus, in the streaming age, curiosity listens only take you so far if you’re not a core pop artist; the song has to really resonate to make a major impact. You can’t just walk into a top 40 debut as a legacy rock act, no matter how huge your legacy is.

Katie Atkinson : The thing that’s probably working for it in 2023 is likely also the thing that worked against it in 2003: It sounds too interchangeable with some of the other  Meteora  singles. In retrospect, I might find “Lost” to be slightly more interesting than lead single “Somewhere I Belong” and definitely more exciting than international single “From the Inside,” but putting that trio of songs together on one project might be too one-note. On the other hand, I don’t think “Lost” touches “Faint,” “Numb” or “Breaking the Habit” in explosiveness or catchiness. So I think it might have fit as a later single, or an album cut at the very least.

Eric Renner Brown : It’s hard to overstate just how massive Linkin Park was in the Meteora era, and just how important they were to so many fans, adolescents especially. As one of those fans, it’s fascinating to look back on how exactly the Meteora singles fared on the charts at the time – solidly, but not much more than that. I think “Lost” could’ve been a good single, but that elides a broader truth: That to Linkin Park fans, all Meteora ’s songs were singles, they were all anthems. Like, “Faint” only hit No. 48 on the Hot 100 and No. 15 on Hot Rock & Alternative Songs? That song defined the adolescences of millions of kids!

Joe Lynch : I could definitely see an album track — but then again, Meteora really benefited from being a lean 12 songs clocking in at 36 minutes, so perhaps B-side would have made more sense. And while it’s obviously making waves now, proving it has some chops as a single, it’s hard to argue that the band was really hurting for radio songs to release from that project.

Andrew Unterberger : By my estimation it would’ve been the 6th or 7th best song on Meteora ; still a tier below the five big U.S. singles (at least three of which are stone classics) but solidly preferable to a handful of the more anonymous deep cuts found in between them on the tracklist. For a song that’s been gathering dust in the vaults for two decades, that’s pretty close to a best-case scenario.

3. A bow like this — with strong metrics across the board — suggests that real-time affection for and interest in Linkin Park is still high, despite the group’s commercial heyday now being decades in the rearview. What is it about Linkin Park that make them still this accessible to streaming-era audiences, even with an obviously older-sounding song?

Katie Atkinson : The sound they helped pioneer – merging rap, electronic and hard rock – is now the norm more than the exception. So while it definitely sounds like a 2003 nu-metal song, it also isn’t too far from, say, Imagine Dragons’ massive hit “Enemy” with rapper J.I.D from last year. So it’s working the nostalgia angle, and still isn’t really too left-field from what would fit in on contemporary modern rock radio.

Today, we’re as far from Meteora as a 40-year-old fan in the early ‘90s would’ve been from Woodstock. Go to a concert by a legacy artist like Dead & Company or Billy Joel today, and chances are, they’re not busting out any new stuff – and if they are, it probably isn’t going to sound much different from the classic stuff the fans came for. On the recorded side, Boomers have reliably been wanted to go back to the well for every morsel of music recorded in the studios by their favorite legacy artists during their respective peaks, so it makes sense to me Millennials would behave similarly with their touchstones. (All this before even getting into the way that the early ‘00s nu-metal aesthetic has recently returned in a big way with Gen Z.)

Josh Glicksman : I don’t know that I would say decades, as in plural, for the band’s commercial heyday —  Living Things  and  One More Light  both debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in 2012 and 2017, respectively. That said, its biggest hits from closer to the turn of the century have never really faded away from public purview: “In the End” and “Numb” are still instantly recognizable crowd-pleasers. Plus, some of the more commercially viable rock artists today,  including Machine Gun Kelly , citing late frontman Chester Bennington as a source of inspiration has helped to introduce the band’s discography to a new, streaming-heavy generation of listeners.

Now that I’m done picking apart the question, I’ll answer it: In hindsight, Linkin Park’s guileless blend of rock, hip-hop and electronic music was clearly more influential than the more critically lauded work the White Stripes, the Strokes, et. al, were doing around the same time. So to me, it’s not shocking that in a genre-agnostic streaming era, a vintage track featuring the band’s late singer is able to become a hit.

Andrew Unterberger : I’ve always thought that Linkin Park were ahead of their time, as the first group to rise to Biggest Band in the World status while viewing rock music primarily through a digital prism — with electronic-based, studio-oriented and heavily adaptable songs that pointed towards an era when guitars would be just one layer of many in a typical rock production. (Not to mention that their frank lyrics about despair, alienation and suffering mental health, while viewed by many as over-the-top in their heyday, sound more at home in 2020s pop than ever before — and also were largely free of the kind of sexist, narcissistic mookishness of many of their ’00s rock peers.) It’s hardly surprising that their music continues to hit with audiences who wouldn’t give a f–k about most GWB-era bands.

4. With modern audiences evidently less concerned than ever about songs being “new” in embracing them as contemporary hits, is there a higher commercial ceiling for recently unearthed songs by familiar artists? Would you expect to see a number of such previously unreleased catalog songs following “Lost” onto the Hot 100 in the next few years?

Eric Renner Brown : Audiences are definitely less concerned about songs being “new,” and I think “Lost” will be an instructive case study for anyone in the business who has been on the fence about releasing an archival single by similarly esteemed contemporaries of Linkin Park. Of course, Linkin Park’s case – frontman Chester Bennington no longer being with us – makes it unique. Many of the band’s peers continue to release new music that they might not want overshadowed by material from their respective “classic” eras.

Josh Glicksman : Absolutely there’s a higher commercial ceiling. You don’t need to look beyond this week’s Hot 100: “I’m Good” by David Guetta and Bebe Rexha was recorded years before its eventual release last summer, and in its 25th week on the chart, it’s holding in the top 10. Even songs like The Weeknd’s “Die For You” and Miguel’s “Sure Thing” — which, to be fair, are hardly unearthed — have taken on a second life and are indicative that recording dates don’t carry all that much weight at the moment. I’d expect loads of artists to try to replicate such success, even if only to serve as in-between-albums fodder for their fans.

Joe Lynch : Oh for sure. Without sounding morbid, I’m sure a number of classic millennial and/or Gen X bands are scouring their archives to find something from a long-gone frontperson that could give the remaining members a chart boost in the 2020s. But it isn’t going to work for everyone; it’s very telling to me that even as the Beatles and Prince have opened the flood gates on vault cuts, it’s a song that fits squarely within the 20-year nostalgia cycle that did the thing (not unlike Angela Bassett).

5. Of course, the success of “Lost” comes after the tragic death of Linkin Park’s celebrated frontman Chester Bennington in 2017. What’s the first song you think of when it comes to posthumous artist releases that really continued and expanded that artist’s legacy?

Katie Atkinson : There are so many options here, but I’m going to go with The Notorious B.I.G.’s “Mo Money Mo Problems.” It’s Biggie’s biggest Hot 100 hit and it was released as a single four months after his murder. It mostly goes to prove just how earth-shatteringly huge he was when he died and that the best was likely still yet to come if his life hadn’t been cut short.

Eric Renner Brown : For so many major artists, especially the ones who die young, a cottage industry pops up posthumously mining their archives. My introduction to this was as a Hendrix-obsessed teenager – but Hendrix’s posthumous releases, as is often the case, were hardly essential. The best and most influential posthumous releases, naturally, are usually the ones that were actively intended for imminent release by artists – and the gold standard is Otis Redding’s “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay.” You can’t really understand Otis’s legacy without this song, recorded in two sessions within the three weeks before his December 1967 death in a plane crash at age 26, and released just a month after he died. It’s the definitive Redding cut: his only Hot 100 No. 1, the perfect summation of his style and genius, and a profoundly influential song too, with a rich sampling history in hip-hop. It’s a tragedy he never saw what it became.

Joe Lynch : Nirvana’s “You Know You’re Right” is the first that comes to mind. It was released eight years after Cobain’s shocking death; this comes six years after Bennington’s shocking death. It brought the band to No. 45 on the Hot 100; so far, this one brought the band back to No. 38. Did that song expand or continue their legacy, though? Eh. For that, I’m going all the way back to 1968, when Otis Redding’s “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” – certainly a signature song from a soul GOAT for many – became the first posthumous single to hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Andrew Unterberger : I still find “You Know You’re Right” to be staggering — a Nirvana song that not only ranks among their most visceral singles of their career, but somehow sounded far more at home amid the alt-rock of 2002 than it would’ve in their own lifetime.

UNITED STATES - MARCH 24: Photo of LINKIN PARK (Photo by Christina Radish/Redferns)

Linkin Park may or may not be mulling over touring next year with a new singer . There are conflicting reports about the future of the band, but currently, they’re succeeding on the Billboard charts yet again.

The group’s latest compilation Papercuts (Singles Collection 2000–2023) is back on top of a Billboard ranking this week. The greatest hits set jumps to No. 1 on the Top Hard Rock Albums tally–a position it’s already familiar with.

Papercuts debuted atop the Top Hard Rock Albums chart last month. The compilation was a quick winner on the ranking of the most-consumed full-lengths that Billboard classifies as hard rock when it arrived.

Last week, Papercuts was replaced at No. 1 on the Top Hard Rock Albums chart by another instant bestseller, Pearl Jam’s Dark Matter . Now, that title is on the decline, which makes room for Linkin Park to soar once more.

In its second week on the Top Hard Rock Albums chart, Dark Matter drops precipitously. The title slides from No. 1 to No. 10, which is not a good sign for the project’s future.

Papercuts has only lived on this specific roster for three weeks. Two of them have been at No. 1, meaning that for the moment, Linkin Park’s latest launch has spent two-thirds of its entire life on top of this tally.
