This is the second time I've seen Jonathan this summer, lucky to live in the same city as this amazing artist. His guitar work and vocals are really incredible. Both times I've taken friends to the show who weren't familiar with his work and they were blown away... instant fans! If you get the chance, GO!

I am a big fan of Wilson, and had seen him play live before, but my god. Totally blown away. Amazing acoustic set with great help from Omar Velasco. Such a talented musician and producer. Enjoyed every single second of it!

Jonathan Wilson Announces Tour and Releases New Music Ahead of New Album DIXIE BLUR

Acclaimed artist/producer Jonathan Wilson has announced select spring tour dates in support of his upcoming new album Dixie Blur  (BMG/Bella Union). The highly anticipated new collection will be released on March 6th and features Wilson’s most personal and fully realized work to date. See full list of dates below.

Listen HERE to the recently released  single “In Heaven Making Love”. Wilson says of the song, “I wanted to write a song about a perfect evening, something worth remembering. A song about carrying letters of rock & roll freedom all over the world.” He adds, “SO happy to share this new music with  Cousin Kenny Vaughn taking that sweet guitar break and the legend Mark O’ Connor playing that fiddle solo. I remember the moment clear as a bell.”

For Dixie Blur , the North Carolina-bred, Los Angeles-based Wilson chose to go to Nashville and work with co-producer Pat Sansone of Wilco at Cowboy Jack Clement’s legendary Sound Emporium Studio. He recorded live in the studio with a personal wish list of players that included Mark O’Connor (fiddle), Kenny Vaughan (guitar) Dennis Crouch (bass), Russ Pahl (pedal steel), Jim Hoke (harmonica, woodwinds), Jon Radford (drums), and Drew Erickson (keyboards).

The results are incredible. Just listen to the tracks “ So Alive ” and “ Korean Tea ” to get a feel for Wilson’s vision, Watch the video for “ 69 Corvette ”, featuring in-studio footage and home movies from Wilson’s youth that feed the longing for home narrative that runs throughout Dixie Blur . 

While Jonathan Wilson may not be a name immediately recognized in mainstream pop culture, chances are that the multi-talented artist’s work has crossed your path. As a producer, Wilson has worked with artists that include  Father John Misty, Conor Oberst,  Laura Marling and  Dawes. As a musician, he has appeared on albums by artists ranging from Jackson Browne to Karen Elson to Roger Waters. Wilson was also musical director, guitarist and vocalist on Waters’ epic US+THEM tour. As a solo artist, Wilson has released Gentle Spirit (2011), Fanfare (2013) and Rare Birds (2018), where he played nearly every instrument. On top of all of that, he is even a gifted luthier. There seems to be no limitation to what this modern renaissance artist is capable of.

Jonathan Wilson Embarking on Nationwide Tour

Jonathan Wilson is set to embark on a nationwide tour to celebrate the release of his new album Fanfare , out now on Downtown Records. The album features vocal and instrumental contributions from Graham Nash, David Crosby, Jackson Browne, Josh Tillman (aka Father John Misty), Wilco’s Patrick Sansone, and Dawes’ Taylor Goldsmith, as well as Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench from Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. The tour will include stops in New York, Boston and Chicago; please see complete dates below.

Born and raised in North Carolina and now based in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, Jonathan Wilson arrived in Laurel Canyon in 2005 and is credited with helping to revive the neighborhood’s once-legendary music scene. As a sought-after producer, Wilson’s recent work includes albums by Father John Misty and Dawes.

Jonathan Wilson Delivers New Single “Marzipan” and Official Music Video

Critically-acclaimed artist and Grammy-nominated engineer/producer Jonathan Wilson has delivered a new single, “Marzipan,” released today via BMG. In addition to the new song, the multi-instrumentalist also shared the official music video for the track, which was created entirely using artificial intelligence. 

In a press release shared by Wilson, he offered, “With my new single ‘Marzipan,’ I wanted to break out of any and all comfort zones I may have lapsed into as a writer, narrator, producer, or player.” Through the process of pushing his boundaries, the artist opened up to a risky, experimental approach with his latest single. 

“I wrote the string and horn arrangements for ‘Marzipan’ myself, and it was a pleasure to have these wonderful players put my melodies on this recording and into the gentle listener’s ears. I wanted a Walker Brothers’ ‘The Electrician’ string moment at some point in my life, that degree of beauty, and I think this gets me close,” he added. 

The multi-instrumentalist concluded his statement, “The song chronicles some of my life autobiographically when I lived in NYC in the early 2000s in my 20s. The feeling of Greenpoint, Brooklyn, at that moment. Countering that with a deep dive into Hank Williams, Roy Acuff, and my early fascination with the Harry Smith Anthology during those years, I was obsessed. And, of course, jazz, which changed my life forever.”

The official music video for Wilson’s newly cut “Marzipan” was created by artist Andrea Nakha using A.I. latent text-to-image diffusion model, ideal for illustrating the vivid, psychedelic, dreamlike journey the artist leads the listener on via his latest offering. Stream the new single here .

Handsome Tours  is excited to announce an intimate, one night only solo performance by Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist/producer  Jonathan Wilson  ( Father John Misty ,  Karen Elson ,  Conor Oberst )  on  Thursday, February 1  at  Cake Wines Cellar Door , Redfern.

The limited capacity event is a chance for fans to get up close and personal with Wilson ahead of his forthcoming third solo release  Rare Birds . The highly anticipated album will feature contributions from  Josh Tillman ( Father John Misty ),  Lucius ,  Lana Del Rey  and New Age music legend  Laraaji .

Says Tillman, “Jonathan’s talent – ‘mastery’ may be more apt – places him among a rarefied class of musical auteur.  You’d be hard pressed to find a comparison, or contemporary for that matter, that would do his recent work justice.”

The first taste of the album comes via the epic and romantic ‘ Over The Midnight ‘ of which Wilson says, “I wanted to write a song about a sacred place for lovers to exist and I named that destination, process, mood or feeling  ‘Over the Midnight’. It’s a place where nothing is savage.” In one of Wilson’s favourite lines on the album he sings, “This world it is burning, but don’t it feel incredible?/ Whisper in my ear and tell me what you see in the flames.”

Rare Birds was produced by Jonathan Wilson and engineered by Dave Cerminara at Wilson’s own Fivestarstudios in Echo Park, Los Angeles. Recorded during the same time-frame he was in the studio with Roger Waters, working on Is This The Life We Really Want?, Wilson felt inclined to expand into certain psychedelic and sound labyrinths. There are voices, sirens, children playing, and more enhancing spatial sounds, while musical compadres Lana Del Reyand Josh Tillman (Father John Misty) appear as backing vocalists on ‘Living With Myself’ and ’49 Hairflips’, respectively.
