Hwange Safari Lodge

The Hwange Safari Lodge has two restaurants: the Dingani Restaurant (seating for 150 persons) and the open air pool area (seating for 200 persons). The Dingani Restaurant offers an a la carte menu and has a splendid view of the surrounding bush through the glass windows and sliding doors. The pool area offers snacks and light meals, buffet breakfasts, lunch and dinners, and a bonfire is made every night. If you really want to experience Hwange Safari Lodge at its best, ask for a bush dinner. Here, long tables are set up alongside sparkling bonfires and a sumptious bush buffet is served.

The Tusker Cocktail Bar can accommodate 50 people (and a 100 more, if the lounge is also taken into account). The Waterhole Bar is situated on the viewing deck, and is usually closed during the low season. However, the Waterhole Bar will be opened for guests on request. This is the ideal place to watch the animals coming for a drink while you are sipping a cool sundowner.

The conference facilities at Hwange Safari Lodge are of an international standard and cater for up to 100 delegates. The facilities include all electronic equipment necessary for conferencing, the staff at Hwange Safari Lodge will also be very accommodating should you need extra equipment.

The Location

Hwange Safari Lodge is situated just outside the borders of the well-known Hwange National Park, and essentially forms part of the Park. Hwange Safari Lodge in Zimbabwe is only an hour’s drive from the Victoria Falls on the road from Bulawayo.

Accommodation

At Hwange Safari Lodge guests are accommodated in 100 tastefully decorated rooms and suites, all en-suite and with air-conditioning, fan and heating. All rooms overlook either the waterhole, savanna bush or swimming pool. Guests shouldn’t be too surprised if they can spot a curious elephant from their window.

The Hwange Safari Lodge caters for guests with diverse needs – from families, to couples, to singles, to tour groups. Guests can choose between spacious suites or standard rooms, with double or twin beds. Only a limited number of rooms have TV to ensure peace and quiet. Mosquito nets, tea/coffee-making facilities, coffee table and lounge chairs, hairdryer, telephone and a writing desk are standard in all rooms and suites.

The highlights at Hwange Safari Lodge are the guided night or daytime game drives. If you don’t feel like venturing into the bush, you can simply enjoy the parade of animals visiting the waterhole. A nearby pottery village offers unique gifts to take home. While staying at Hwange Safari Lodge, you can also visit the nearby Dete, to visit their animal sanctuary for the well-known “painted dogs”.

I spent two amazing nights at the Holiday Inn Bulawayo and I was impressed. I received a personalized welcome and I was acknowledged as a Platinum member. The look and feel of the Hotel is lovely. The Hotel grounds were well kept and included a pool, bar and gym. If your work takes you to Bulawayo, I highly recommend the Holiday Inn Bulawayo.

Great stay in beautiful setting. Lovely team looked after us with fantastic service and very tasty food. The waterhole delivered a huge variety of game and the night drive was a lot of fun.

We have loved our stay at this hotel. The staff are extremely helpful and it is set on a beautiful property with a waterhole in view, to which wild animals can be viewed. The lodge is being renovated and upgraded. Our room was very comfortable and well appointed. The road to Hwange National Park needs repair, which slows the trip by car from Victoria Falls. Safaris are organised by the lodge into the National Park. Our guide was knowledgeable and made sure we saw as many animals as possible. Overall, our stay at Hwange Safari Lodge has been most enjoyable.

“Just back from 3 days at The Hide – stayed in Tent 8 which had a great view of the waterhole and right next to main area….one of the days x 4 vultures turned up across the waterhole just chilling out for a few hours as if they had popped to the beach! The tent was fab with all that was needed and the added bonus of an outdoor shower and bath! The food served was delicious. Thanks to our Guide Innocent we managed to see lots of different animals and bird life including a rare sighting of x 3 bat eared foxes!

A highlight was one of the evenings when driving out for sundowners he drove us to a plain filled with palm trees which was quite surreal after driving through woodland and made even more special by a herd of elephants drinking in the waterhole. Stayed one of the nights in the Doves Nest – treehouse; if there is availability this is so worth doing and the most amazing experience; you are given drinks when dropped off for sundowners and then dinner is delivered at 8pm. The night sky looking at the stars is magical. A truly unforgettable African experience. Thanks The Hide!”  March 2020

Set on Dete Vlei, just outside Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park, Sable Valley Lodge was extensively refurbished in 2022.

Sable Valley Lodge has been operating for over 40 years and we can see why. The lodge is conveniently located close to Hwange yet within a private reserve that allows additional flexibility on activities. The recent upgrades have refreshed this traditional safari lodge bringing additional creature comforts to the rooms, although the most notable addition is the excellent new hide. Even with the upgrades, we consider that Sable Valley Lodge remains one of Hwange’s best-value safari lodges.

• With 14 651 square kilometers of wilderness to explore, Hwange National Park is bigger than the Serengeti National Park.
• For Hwange’s impressive size, the per annum visitor numbers are small in contrast to the density of travelers to parks such as the Serengeti, Masai Mara, and Kruger—it is likely you will spend most of your safari without seeing other vehicles except those from the lodge you are staying at—an exclusive experience indeed!
• Hwange National Park is easy to reach from Victoria Falls by air in a private charter or a combination of road and the unique Elephant Express railcar transfer.
• Hwange is home to approximately 46 000 elephants, compared with Masai Mara at 3 700, Kruger at 13 750 and Serengeti at 2 100. In the dry season in Hwange, it is likely you will see elephants numbering in the hundreds congregating at waterpoints. Amazingly there are more elephants than guests visiting Hwange National Park in a year!

Located in a private concession in the Sikumi Forest on the outskirts of Hwange National Park, Ivory is one the easiest of lodges to access by road. Just 15 minutes away the main gate, the lodge is small, intimate and comfortable offering family-friendly safari experiences. Great value for money, it has it's own waterhole  in-front  of the lodge where elephants love to drink. And although the game around the lodge is great, game drives also take place inside the National Park.

With only nine rooms built on stilts - seven tree houses and two Presidential Elephant Suites - all offer amazing views over the camps waterhole. Rooms are simply furnished yet comfortable. The main area is a large thatched building looking out into stretches of grasslands with a viewing hide to go an enjoy all the wildlife passing by.  There is also a swimming pool for those hot summer months.
