Skyrim – How to Fast Travel Between Towns, Cities, and More

Image of Chris Jecks

How to Fast Travel – Skyrim

Fast travelling is going to be your best friend in Skyrim. The world is massive, and you’ll be juggling a ton of quests constantly sending you to each corner of it. To make sure you don’t waste your life running around the map, here’s how to fast travel and save yourself a lot of headaches.

First, you’ll need to make sure you’re outside. You won’t be able to fast travel inside a cave, building, or other structure. Next, make sure you aren’t in combat and that there aren’t any enemies nearby. You won’t be able to fast travel unless you’re safe. And last up on the warnings list, you cannot fast travel if you’re overburdened, or carrying more in item weight than the max capacity your stamina affords you.

Then, pull out your map. Hit Circle on PlayStation and B on Xbox to bring up your menu, then hit the down button to head to your map. Move your cursor over a landmark you’ve visited at least once before, be it a city, a cave, or other notable location. Select this, and choose to fast travel there at the prompt. You’ll then find yourself magically teleported to your desired spot.

Fast Travel

Fast Travel is available from the world map . On the map, dark markers indicate locations you know about but have not yet visited, while light markers indicate locations you have discovered. Select any light marker to travel there.

You cannot fast travel from interiors or while in combat . While fast travelling, time moves forward depending on how far you go. If you have a horse, it will fast travel with you. If you fast travel to a city, your horse will be placed in the nearest stable.

The name of this method of transportation can be misleading as within the game, the time taken to reach the destination is not any shorter, it only appears instantaneous to the player.

Skyrim survival mode: How to enable survival mode and survival mode tips in Skyrim: Anniversary Edition

How to survive a harsher Tamriel in the Anniversary Edition.

Survival Mode in Skyrim is a particularly unforgiving experience, but for players who like a challenge, it's a great way to experience something new in the 2021's Anniversary Edition.

This page explains everything you need to know about Survival Mode in Skyrim, such as how to enable Survival Mode , survival mode differences - including changes to travel and camping - as well as our Skyrim survival mode tips .

A feature which ties nicely into the addition of survival mode is fishing - which you can also use in a non-survival mode playthrough.

On this page:

How to enable survival mode in Skyrim, and what to do if not in settings explained

What is survival mode in skyrim survival mode changes, including fast travel, explained, skyrim survival mode tips and tricks, from survival mode camping to cooking.

Survival mode can be found in the Settings are of the menu, by selecting Gameplay then enabling Survival Mode.

If it is not in the settings, then you are likely in a new save - and you have to complete the tutorial of Skyrim first.

Once you complete the 'Unbound' intro quest with either Hadvar or Ralof, you'll receive a pop-up notification about Survival Mode. It gives you a brief explanation on what to expect from the mode: such as you needing to eat, to be more wary about catching diseases, the need to sleep, etc before asking you whether you want to enable it or not. If that sounds like fun, you select yes.

From there on out, you'll be playing Skyrim on Survival Mode - which means it's a fair bit harder, but who doesn't love a good challenge?

Nonetheless, if Survival Mode turns out to be too difficult, it's easy to turn off. Head to Settings, go to Gameplay and you'll be able to disable it without having to worry about any consequences.

The opposite of this is also true, as you're able to enable Survival Mode on any previous saves you have started or imported into the Anniversary Edition.

Survival Mode in the Anniversary Edition is a new, exciting way to make your time in the continent of Skyrim a little more challenging and fun.

When enabling Survival Mode, players will need to meet certain requirements in order not to get sick and die. These requirements are: be well-fed, warm, physically well, and well-rested.

how to fast travel in skyrim

However, these requirements won't always be easy to meet as Survival Mode puts a heapload of restrictions on you. These are:

  • No Fast Travel: You want to just do a quick trip to Riften to pick up something you forgot? That's no longer possible in Survival Mode. You'll have to walk!
  • Reduced Carry Weight: Skyrim's carry weight restrictions are already pretty unforgiving at times, this makes it so you really do need to just pack the essentials.
  • Level Up via Sleeping: In vanilla Skyrim you can level up wherever and whenever, but here you can only do so after you sleep.
  • Reduced Stamina/Mana: If you're hungry, cold or fatigued, you'll suffer from a reduction of Stamina or Mana, represented by the darkening of the Stamina/Mana bar.
  • Warm/Cold Meters: Depending on whether you're hot or cold, you'll be shown a Snowflake or a Sun at the top of your HUD. This can affect you to the point you can die if you don't cool down or get warm.
  • Health: When in Survival Mode, health doesn't come back after waiting for a little while. You'll need to eat, sleep or use a health potion in order to get back to tip-top shape.

There's a lot of factors to consider with survival mode - here are some tips and tricks to help you along the way:

  • Want to know what's affecting you right now? Head to Active Effects in the Magic menu and you'll see what being hungry, tired and cold does to affect your gameplay.

how to fast travel in skyrim

  • Don't enter water when cold - you'll more than likely catch a disease and there's a high chance you can die and lose your progress.
  • Warm soup can heat you up - In the frozen tundra with nowhere to go for another 10 miles? Don't fret, eat some soup. It'll not only keep you fed, but will keep you nice and toasty. If that doesn't work, there's always a torch to keep your bones warm.

how to fast travel in skyrim

  • Cook your food - sometimes it gets desperate when you're in a dungeon and there's no food to eat but the raw fish you caught outside, but it's always better to cook your food before eating it. Just like real life, eating raw food can lead to food poisoning in Skyrim.

how to fast travel in skyrim

  • Fishing is the best way to get food quickly and easy, as long as you know where the best fishing spots are.
  • Craft camping gear - Included in the Anniversary Edition content through the Content Creation Club, crafting camping gear will make it so you're able to set down camp in the wilderness, giving you a warm fire, a place to cook and a place to settle in for the night.

how to fast travel in skyrim

  • The colder you get, the slower you are. It also affects your stamina and how fast you swing your weapons and the effectiveness of your stealth.
  • Travelling in a horse and cart to far off places will make you tired and hungry, so don't get into one if you're already pretty fatigued and hungry, otherwise you risk dying on the journey to your location.

Baldur's Gate 3 Player Finds Easily Missed OP Amulet After 900 Hours Of Playing

Fallout's permanent setting officially confirmed (& some fans won't be happy), starfield's most iconic armor gets a strange but awesome update.

Looting items only to become over-encumbered is a nuisance for any The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim player who wants to sell or store their stuff. Triggered when the player collects enough items to exceed their carry weight, the over-encumbered status in Skyrim prohibits the player from fast traveling , sprinting, and running. It basically reduces the game to a slog, with the player character only able to slowly walk to wherever they need to go. If the player happens to get into a fight, it is even worse, as the over-encumbered player will not be able to dodge or run away from any incoming attacks.

Most players try to erase over-encumbrance in Skyrim by increasing their carry weight, and it’s a valid enough strategy with allthe methods players have available. Increasing stamina, getting the Extra Pockets pickpocket perk, and making use of certain enchantments can all increase carry weight significantly. But, sometimes, it is not enough, and players can't bear to leave any item behind. Followers are not always enough to carry the player’s heavy burdens. In these cases, players can use three other methods to fast travel while holding all their stuff.

Related:  Skyrim: How to Get the Unbreakable Lockpick (Skeleton Key)

One of the best methods for fast traveling while over-encumbered in Skyrim is to make sure to always carry a powerful potion that can increase carry weight. This can be a Fortify Carry Weight potion or a Strength potion, as long as it increases the player’s carry weight capacity enough to temporarily erase the encumbered status. Players will want to be sure to either buy or craft the most powerful potion possible. When that potion is ingested, they can immediately open the map and select a location. They should arrive at that location with no hassle, but, after fast traveling, the potion’s effects wear off, which makes the player is over-encumbered again. Players should use their opportunity to reach a town or city where they can unload their loot.

Use Mounts or Necromancy to Fast Travel While Over-Encumbered in Skyrim

Another option for traveling long distances while over-encumbered in Skyrim is to use a mount like a horse, as these creatures are capable of carrying the player regardless of the amount of loot they are carrying. It really is that easy, provided the mount is conveniently nearby. But, for most mounts, having one close by can be a bit challenging since most are skittish by nature. Arvak is the most ideal mount for over-encumbered travel purposes since he can be summoned in any outdoor location.

The last method is rather odd, but it can get the job done. If the player character has some skill in conjuration, they can use a corpse as a temporary pack mule. To do this, they should approach a recently slain enemy like a bandit or draugr , enter its inventory, and load it with as much as it can carry. If players lose their over-encumbered status by doing this, then they can use a spell like “raise zombie” or “reanimate corpse” to turn the dead body into a thrall. They should fast-travel before the spell wears off and will find themselves at their desired location with a pile of ashes right next to them. Those ashes should have all the items that the player deposited on the corpse.

Dragonborn

Skyrim:Dragon Riding

how to fast travel in skyrim

Dragon riding is a new gameplay mechanic added by the Dragonborn add-on . In order to ride a dragon , you must acquire all three words of the Bend Will shout and use it on a dragon. The dragon will then land and allow you to climb onto its back and ride it. You cannot directly control the dragon while riding, but can give it certain instructions. Unlocking the third word of the Bend Will shout starts the final quest of the Dragonborn main questline , in which you're likely to ride your first dragon . After you do this, a help section will be added in the menu for dragon riding.

You can lock on to a single enemy which causes the dragon to attack that target. The dragon will then use a standard aerial attack pattern and can be assisted by you via shouts and spells. Area of effect spells or summons cannot be used while riding a dragon. The use of weapons (such as bows and melee weapons) are mostly limited as well.

To fast travel to different areas, simply select the location on your map as you normally would. In terms of in-game time, fast traveling on a dragon is almost immediate. Once given the command to land, the dragon will return to ground level where you can dismount. The dragon will then either aid you in combat, attack you, or simply leave. You cannot fast travel on a dragon to a different worldspace. This means you cannot travel to and from walled cities, or between Solstheim and Skyrim .

  • 3 Dragon Speech
  • 4 Achievements

Commands [ edit ]

It's impossible to directly control the dragon while riding, but they will follow the following commands:

  • Lock Target: Lock onto any potential targets on sight, hostile or non-hostile. If you give this order while a target is already locked, you can unlock from the previous target.
  • Switch Target: Switch target from all locked ones and decide which one to attack. The health bar of the target will be shown on your screen. You can order your dragon to do so even in combat. Any target in sight can be chosen in this way, regardless of whether it has been found before.
  • Attack: Attack the chosen target. Your dragon will keep attacking the target with its own means until the target dies. You can cancel the attack by switching to another target.
  • Land: Find a potential area to land and dismount your dragon. You can order your dragon to do so even in combat. If you give this order again before landing successfully, the previous landing command will be canceled and you can fly with your dragon back to the sky.

Detailed key set information can be found here .

Combat [ edit ]

During combat, you are allowed to give your dragon commands. If you have given it an attack command and locked onto a target, it will attack the target until its attack has successfully hit the target or until the dragon is called off. It might take some time for the dragon to actually kill the target, as it will continuously circle until it is in the correct position to attack. If the target moves too fast or finds cover, the dragon may be unable to attack; in this case, it will fall back and continue to circle until the target is vulnerable. If there are several enemies around, the dragon will first dispatch its primary target, then select another automatically.

If the dragon you're riding takes too much damage during combat, it can be killed; if this happens, you will plummet to the earth and most likely die. Should your dragon be struck by the Unrelenting Force ‎ shout, you may get knocked off, which will probably also result in your death.

While riding a dragon, you can only use certain spells and shouts. You are limited mainly to Destruction, Restoration, and Alteration spells while mounted. When casting, you need to pay attention to the effective range of your spells and other factors such as the landscape. The dragon has a fast movement speed, so you must remember that it may be hard to actually hit the enemies.

The following is a list of spells and dragon shouts which may be cast from the back of a dragon:

  • Other spells can be equipped while riding a dragon for the first time after loading a save, however, they cannot be used and the game will remind you "You cannot cast that type of spell while riding a dragon."

Dragon Speech [ edit ]

When mounted, dragons will give various responses to your commands.

  • " Zu'u fent aam . I am at your command."
  • "Hail, thuri . Shall we fly together?"
  • "How can I serve you, thuri?"
  • "As you command."
  • "Yes, thuri."
  • " Mu fen krif ."
  • "At once. Zu'u fen al ."
  • " Drem . There is no prey here."
  • "I sense nothing nearby."
  • " Krosis , the land below us is empty of prey."
  • " Krosis, thuri . That is impossible."
  • "As you command. Mu daal wah golt .
  • "I will look for a spot to land."
  • "Yes, Thuri. Wah golt . I will land at once."
  • " Bo Pruzaan . Better to fly."
  • "I must leave you now."
  • "I have served you for long enough. Tiidi do ahmik oblaan ."
  • " Zu'u ni zaamiil . You cannot command me forever."
  • " Ahmik oblaan . My service to you is over."

Achievements [ edit ]

One achievement is related to dragon riding:

SR-achievement-Dragonrider.png

Notes [ edit ]

  • Sahloknir and Durnehviir are unaffected by the Bend Will shout, and therefore cannot be ridden.
  • Dragon taming is only allowed in the worldspaces of Skyrim, Solstheim, and Apocrypha. Because of this, Alduin , Vulthuryol , and the skeletal dragon encountered in Labyrinthian cannot be ridden.
  • The Throat of the World is listed as a bad location for dragon taming and so Paarthurnax cannot be ridden. Odahviing can be tamed and ridden there though.
  • Your horse will follow you if you fast travel on a dragon to a different location.
  • If a hostile dragon is encountered, the tamed dragon will proceed to fight it and will continue to climb higher into the sky until one of the dragons is reduced to 30% health and flies down to crash land.
  • If you order a dragon you are riding to kill an NPC, you incur a bounty for the death. [ verification needed — Do you actually? (yes) ]
  • In Survival Mode , dragon riding is the only way to use fast travel besides carriages and boats.
  • If you engage another dragon whilst riding one, the battle will be almost entirely airborne, at least until one or both dragons reaches a certain threshold of health (usually half, or sometimes lower). You will also end up very high in the sky; higher than normal when battling a dragon from the ground.

Bugs [ edit ]

  • When riding a dragon, if the dragon flies through a mountain, you may disappear and the game may crash.
  • Reload a save before riding the dragon to fix this.
  • Reading an Elder Scroll may also fix this.
  • Getting off and then getting back on the dragon may resolve this.
  • While in flight, your dragon and everything around you may slow down to a near walking speed.
  • If a dragon you are riding flies outside the world boundaries you will get stuck in mid air, but still be able to do all the things you can normally do while riding a dragon. Reloading a previous save will fix this. ?
  • When you mount a dragon after taming it, your character may stand with arms and legs wide upon the dragon where your character is supposed to sit.
  • When mounting a dragon from an elevated level, you may mount 'empty space' above the dragon and rapidly rise upwards for a few moments, usually resulting in a fatal fall shortly after. ?
  • If using Bend Will on a dragon and he is killed while speaking to you, he will begin to turn to ash and give you a soul, but still be alive and rideable.
  • Though you are supposed to be able to use certain spells from the Dragon's back, you may be unable to, no matter which or how many Dragons you ride. ?

Skyrim: Complete Guide To Survival Mode and Camping

Starting Survival Mode in Skyrim makes the game harder in several ways, but setting up a Campsite can help alleviate being cold and fatigued.

Quick Links

How to turn on survival mode, what is survival mode - racial passives and gameplay changes, what is survival mode - the environment and staying healthy, skyrim camping, other skyrim survival tips - materials, ingredients, and restoration.

Survival Mode is an addon for Skyrim Special Edition first introduced all the way back in 2017 as a Creation Club downloadable mod. Now that it's been included with Skyrim Anniversary Edition (and is free for Special Edition players without the upgrade), players are flocking back to experience a wholly new way of experiencing the game.

RELATED: Skyrim: How to Start Saints and Seducers

Skyrim 's Survival Mode changes a lot about the game . Players will find themselves constantly challenged by the environment and their own bodily needs through new weather effects and the maintenance of fatigue, hunger, and other status effects – stealing a Sweetroll doesn't seem like such a bad idea if it means having something to eat.

Updated June 29, 2022 by Erik Petrovich : Skyrim Anniversary Edition introduced a ton of new and returning official addons for the now decade-old RPG, including Skyrim survival mode camping and dozens and dozens more. For Survival Mode Skyrim changes a lot about the way players experience the world: temperature matters, for example, and fast travel is disabled to force players to explore the world on foot. Some of the mechanics of Skyrim Survival Mode are a bit enigmatic, but in each entry below tables lay out these new effects and systems with basic explanations of how they change the vanilla game. Skyrim survival mode is a really neat addition to the game, but it's a death sentence if you go in blind - especially on higher difficulties.

When it comes to how to enable Survival Mode there are two main methods. When starting out the game normally (in the traditional Helgen Dragon attack intro) players leave the caverns beneath Helgen after escaping their own execution. When the player leaves Helgen Keep and sees the vast expanse of Skyrim, a dialogue box pops up asking the player whether they want Survival Mode enabled. The dialogue box that pops up describes Survival Mode briefly and directs players to the "Help" tab in the menu for a more thorough explanation of the new systems.

Typically, Survival Mode is disabled until the player finishes this introductory Unbound quest. However, there is an option in the "Gameplay" tab of the system menu that enables and disables Survival Mode on a whim, which can be useful if it proves to be too much of a challenge or if the player has an Alternate Start mod installed.

Survival Mode features a litany of changes to the game that fundamentally alter how a player experiences the world of Skyrim . There are new racial passives to consider, fast travel is disabled, and players have new status effects to maintain or suffer the consequences.

RELATED: Skyrim: How To Get The Staff Of Sheogorath

It's regarded by many players as being much, much harder than the regular game. There are lots of things to know about before diving into this new mode – unprepared players will find themselves starving and freezing in minutes if they don't know what they're in for.

Racial Passives

Survival Mode changes many aspects of Skyrim , even from the very outset of the game . Several of the playable races have new racial passives related to Survival Mode, for example, that can greatly influence how easily a player can make it in the frozen North of Tamriel.

Fundamental Gameplay Changes

Playing through Survival Mode in Skyrim is a wildly different experience than the vanilla game. Some of these gameplay changes make Skyrim feel more like Morrowind or Oblivion , like having to sleep to level up, and some serve to simply make the game feel more immersive, like the inability to recover health passively.

In addition to the many changes to the way Skyrim is experienced, Survival Mode adds several new factors to keep an eye on when journeying in the Nord homeland and beyond. Staying too long on top of an icy mountain can now make players freeze to death, and not eating or sleeping now has dire consequences.

RELATED: Skyrim: How To Get Sunder And Wraithguard

These new factors change the ways players observe and interact with their environments . The path to Bleak Falls Barrow, for example, is now much more deadly than in the vanilla game thanks to the lack of food, threats to health totals, and of course the blisteringly cold mountaintop itself.

Environmental Factors

There are two main Environmental Effects introduced with Skyrim 's Survival Mode, being Cold and Warmth . Players can see what kind of environment they are currently in by looking to the right of the Compass - a Sun marks the local temperature as Warm, while a Snowflake marks the local temperature as Cold. There are six levels of Cold, each with different effects.

Players who get into the lower levels of being Cold can restore their internal temperature by standing next to something Warm like a fire, eating something hot , or holding a Torch (not simply having one in the inventory). Conversely, players rapidly become Colder in Freezing Water , instantly losing health. If a player's level of Cold reaches the maximum, they will die from being frozen.

There are two new personal Status Effects to maintain in Survival Mode, being Hunger and Fatigue. Hunger generally affects Stamina , while Fatigue generally affects Magicka . Each can be maintained in the ways one would naturally assume - eating healthily and sleeping comfortably.

  • Hunger naturally depletes over time and can be alleviated by eating food .
  • Eating enough food makes players Well Fed, and it's better to eat cooked food than other food as it restores more Hunger.
  • Not maintaining Hunger lowers total Stamina, makes swinging weapons harder, and can lead to death from Starvation
  • Fatigue naturally depletes over the course of a day, and can be alleviated by sleeping (not simply waiting)
  • Sleeping in a bed indoors, like at an Inn, makes players Well Rested. However, sleeping in a bed outdoors or in an uncomfortable place does not.
  • Not maintaining Fatigue lowers Stamina and Magicka recovery, lowers total Magicka, reduces Potion effectiveness, and can lead to death from exhaustion.

Many players have found that the rate that these two status effects decline is much faster than expected. Keep a constant watch on your current levels of Hunger and Fatigue, and don't be afraid to steal food to eat if it's necessary. Sleeping and eating at an Inn regularly is highly recommended.

Camping in Skyrim is not part of the Survival Mode addon for Skyrim Anniversary Edition , but the two work in tandem better than most mods. Camping allows players to craft and place a campsite anywhere in the world. Players can Fast Travel to their Campsite whenever they like, but of course, this feature is disabled in Survival Mode.

There are numerous benefits to taking the time to gather materials and set up a Campsite on an adventure, especially in Survival mode. It gives players a covered place to sleep, provides a place of Warmth, and is in all ways (except aesthetically) a respite from the harsh environments in the Province of Skyrim.

How To Set Up A Campsite

For camping Skyrim makes things pretty simple, requiring only a few basic materials and a Forge as well as an open place in the world to place it. Gather three pieces of Firewood and one piece of Leather , then head to the Forge and look under the "Misc" section to find craftable Camping Supplies . At the start of the game, Firewood can be gathered easily in Riverwood, while Leather can be harvested from local Deer and other animals.

When you have Camping Supplies crafted and in your inventory, it's ready to be placed out in the world. When you're ready to go to sleep for the night in the wilderness, find a relatively flat portion of land, go into your Inventory and select Camping Supplies . A dialogue box pops up confirming the placement of the campsite. Finally, after a fade to black, a tent, campfire, and place to sit appear.

How Does Camping Benefit The Player?

Camping in the vanilla game is meant as a means of increasing player immersion, providing a resting spot in one's travels, but not any other major benefits. For Survival Mode players, though, it's a near-vital resource that players should plan to carry a few of at all times, as the Tent and Campfire provide huge benefits.

  • The Tent : Sleeping in a Tent won't provide the Well Rested bonus like sleeping in a bed in an Inn, but it doesn't make the player wake up Drained like a normal wilderness bedroll.
  • The Campfire : Provides Warmth that can alleviate the negative effects of Cold. Also serves as a spot to cook limited Food (notably, Hot Soup can be made in a Camp).
  • Non-Survival Mode : Campsite can be Fast Travelled to at any point, as long as the camp hasn't been taken down of course.

Survival in Skyrim isn't as simple as just wearing the right clothes, keeping oneself fed, and getting to sleep at a decent hour. There are four things a survival mode Skyrim player can do to improve their chances of survival: get a backpack, gather useful materials, collect ingredients, and level Restoration.

Buy And Equip A Backpack

One of the addons included with Skyrim Special Edition adds backpacks to the game, which greatly increase the player's carrying capacity when equipped. These are more useful in Survival Mode than vanilla Skyrim because of the reduced carry weight for all races. Backpacks come in a lot of styles, some even come with pretty major enchantments, and they can be bought from just about any general vendor or blacksmith for next to nothing. They can also be crafted pretty easily if you find yourself strapped for cash.

Keep An Eye Out For Useful Materials...

There are lots of useful things to craft with Skyrim survival mode, and lots of materials that can be used to make these often life-saving creations. Keep an eye out for Firewood and Leather for crafting Campfires, and for crafting Backpacks, and look for Animal Skins and Hides to make Leather yourself if you can't afford to buy it.

...And Gather These Cooking Ingredients Too

In Survival Mode Skyrim makes cooking much more important than in the base game. Cooked food keeps you warm longer, serve as a source of healing, and can grant other special effects with the right ingredients. Look out for ingredients like Salt Piles for improved cooking recipes, Fire Salts for recipes that warm the player, Hawk Feathers or Mudcrab Chitin for Cure Disease potions, and Imp Gall or Scrib Jelly for Cure Poison potions.

Level Restoration For Healing

Because passive healing is disabled in Survival Mode, Restoration Spells are one way to heal oneself. Potions and Food work too, but the reduced carry weight makes carrying lots of potions and food difficult. Consider leveling up your Restoration from the beginning of the game until you reach a point where stronger healing spells are available to you before branching out into a proper build.

Read on, and we’ll show you how to max out your skills, level up quickly, and become an all-powerful Dragonborn ready to take on any challenge!

Use Muffle or Clairvoyance repeatedly.

Muffle and Clairvoyance will both buff your Illusion magic skill.

  • Buy the Muffle spell from Farengar at Dragonsreach in the city of Whiterun.
  • Buy Clairvoyance from Lucan Valerius at the Riverwood Trader in Riverwood.
  • When you run out of magicka (the power source that lets you cast spells), use the “wait” function for 1 hour so you can quickly recharge your magicka and start casting spells again.
  • At higher levels, use the Harmony spell instead. Harmony is a Master-level spell, so you need to level up and become a master of illusion magic to cast it. However, using it will help you further level up your Illusion skill.

Sneak attack either Hadvar or Ralof.

Attacking an NPC can improve your Stealth and One-Handed skills.

  • Any unkillable NPC can be used to level up your fighting skills, not just Hadvar and Ralof; they’re simply two of the easiest NPCs to choose from, and the first ones you’ll encounter in the game.
  • For example, you could also travel to High Hrothgar and sneak attack a meditating Greybeard since they also can’t be killed. Be sure to save your game first, just in case!

Summon and banish creatures.

Summoning creatures increases your Conjuration magic skill.

  • Find the Conjure Flame Atronach spell by traveling to the College of Winterhold and speaking to Faralda; she’ll automatically give you the spell.
  • Buy the Banish Daedra spell from Phinis Gestor (at the College of Winterhold) or Calcelmo (in Understone Keep, Markarth).
  • Buy the Conjure Familiar spell from Phinis Gestor, Farengar (in Whiterun), or Sybille Stentor (in the Blue Palace, Solitude).

Cast the Detect Life spell in busy locations.

Detect Life is one of the easiest ways to raise your Alteration skill.

  • Find it as random loot on enemies.
  • Purchase it from Tolfdir (at the College of Winterhold) or Wylandriah (in Mistveil Keep, Riften).
  • Get the spell as a reward for completing the “Infiltration” quest from Stalleo at Treva’s Watch.

Use Telekinesis while fast-traveling.

Telekinesis is another effective spell for raising your Alteration magic.

  • Because you’re casting the spell while fast-traveling, the game thinks your character has been casting it for hours and hours of in-game time—and rewards you accordingly.
  • Buy it from Tolfdir (at the College of Winderhold) and Wylandriah (in Mistveil Keep, Riften) after you reach Alteration Level 40.
  • Find it in Proudspire Manor’s chest (in Solitude, after buying Proudspire for 25,000 gold).
  • Find it in a variety of chests around the world, including Uttering Hills Cave and Labyrinthian.

Learn the Equilibrium and Fast Healing spells.

Raise your Restoration and Alternation magic by healing yourself.

  • Find the Equilibrium spell in the Labyrinthian Chasm.
  • Purchase the Fast Healing spell from Farengar (in Whiterun) or Colette (at the College of Winterhold).
  • Use the basic healing spell you get automatically at the start of the game, or Fast Healing as your skill increases.

Cast spells on Dark Brotherhood prisoners.

The Dark Brotherhood’s torture chamber can raise your Destruction skill.

  • Using healing magic to heal the hurt prisoners can help boost your Restoration magic skill as well.
  • It’ll take about an hour to max out your Destruction skill this way (but you don’t have to do it all at once, either).
  • Try enchanting your equipment with Destruction cost reduction enchantments as well, which will lower the Magicka required to cast the spells.
  • Keep in mind that the torture chamber costs 5,000 gold to build—so plan accordingly!

Use the Soul Trap spell on bodies.

The Soul Trap spell raises your Conjuring magic skill.

  • Snag the Soul Trap spell from Farengar (in Whiterun) or Phinis Gestor (at the College of Winterhold).
  • For example, one popular soul trap weapon is the Mace of Molag Bal, which you’ll find in Markarth after finishing “The House of Horrors” quest.

Let yourself take damage in armor.

Take damage to raise your Light and Heavy Armor skills.

Deflect attacks with your shield.

Using your shield successfully raises your Block skill level.

  • Giant camps are located all over Skyrim , from Bleakwind Basin (west of Whiterun) the Broken Wind Camp (on the edge of the hot springs in Eastmarch).
  • It may take around 30 minutes to get your Block skill all the way to 100, so make sure you have enough healing potions and spells to keep your character alive!
  • This strategy is also effective for raising your character’s Armor skills.

Attack Shadowmere the horse.

Fighting Shadowmere can boost your melee and Archery skills.

  • To get Shadowmere as a mount, complete the Dark Brotherhood assassin questline in Skyrim . Then, you’ll be able to summon the horse whenever you want!

Be stealthy in crowded areas.

Creep around constantly to improve your Sneak skill.

  • To make this as easy as possible, try sneaking up behind someone stationary, like a shopkeeper.
  • Then, keep backing into the wall behind you indefinitely (so the game registers that you’re moving). This lets you boost the Sneak skill with little effort.

Pickpocket NPCs as they sleep.

Increase your Pickpocket skill by stealing as much as you can.

  • This strategy also lets you level up your Sneak and Lockpicking skills (since most homes are locked at night in Skyrim ).
  • After that, start aiming for more high-value steals (like jewelry).

Break your lockpicks.

Attempt (and fail) to pick locks to improve your Lockpicking skill.

  • Gather a ton of lockpicks before attempting this so you won’t run out!
  • To try this trick without upsetting an NPC, join the Thieves’ Guild in Riften and spend some time picking locks on the many practice chests there.

Craft weapons and armor.

Raise your Smithing skill by using a blacksmith forge as much as you can.

  • When you’ve reached high levels of Smithing, the best way to keep leveling is to purchase armor from blacksmiths and then upgrade it.
  • Then, use items like the Necklace of Haggling to sell the upgraded armor back to a blacksmith and make a hefty profit. Keep upgrading armor to reach Smithing level 100.

Transmute iron ore to gold.

Making jewelry from altered gold raises your Smithing and Alteration skills.

  • Find the Transmute Mineral Ore spell at the Halted Stream Camp, northeast of Whitewatch Tower in Whiterun hold.
  • It’s easy to find iron ore veins in mines around the game world, including Lost Prospect Mine (in the Rift), Mor Khazgur Mine (in Haafingar), and Darkwater Crossing (in Eastmarch).
  • Keep any jewels you find or get as rewards for completing quests; you’ll be able to put those gems in your crafted jewelry, which makes it more valuable (so you’ll get more money for it).

Use valuable enchantments on weapons.

Valuable enchantments raise your Enchantment skill the fastest.

  • Fortify Destruction
  • Fortify Sneak
  • Fortify Archery
  • Banish Daedra
  • Absorb Health

Craft high-value potions.

The more valuable the potion, the higher your Alchemy skill will get.

  • Fortify Carry Weight
  • Invisibility
  • Regenerate Health (or Stamina/Magicka)
  • Any potion made with the Giant’s Toe ingredient because it makes them longer-lasting and more potent, and thus worth more money.

Wear the Amulet of Articulation.

The Amulet of Articulation helps level up your Speech skill.

  • With the bonus to your Persuasion checks, you’ll be able to succeed on almost any check, which in turn levels up your Speech skill much faster!

Ask an NPC to train you.

Trainers in Skyrim can level up your skills for a fee.

  • Niruin, in the Thieves’ Guild (in Riften) is a trainer who teaches Archery.
  • Farkas, in the Companions (in Whiterun) is a trainer who teaches the Heavy Armor skill.
  • Giraud Gemane, in the Bard’s College (in Solitude) is a trainer who teaches the Speech skill.
  • Remember, the more you level up your skills, the more expensive training becomes. Be prepared to spend quite a bit of gold if you choose this strategy!

Activate a Guardian Stone.

The Warrior, Mage, and Thief Stones each give different skill bonuses.

  • The Warrior Stone grants a 20% leveling bonus to the Block, Heavy Armor, One-Handed, Two-Handed, and Smithing skills.
  • The Mage Stone grants a 20% leveling bonus to the Alteration, Conjuration, Destruction, Enchanting, Illusion, and Restoration skills.
  • The Thief Stone grants a 20% leveling bonus to the Archery, Sneak, Alchemy, Light Armor, Pickpocket, Speech, and Lockpicking skills.

Sleep in bed with a loved one.

The Lover’s Comfort perk grants a bonus to skill increases.

  • Consider stacking the Lover’s Comfort perk with the bonus you get from one of the Guardian Stones.
  • For example, if you had the Thief Stone bonus and the Lover’s Comfort perk, you’d learn all Thief abilities a whopping 35% faster—which is a decent bonus!

Track down skill books.

Skill books can increase a skill with no effort on your part.

  • Herbalist's Guide to Skyrim (found in Arcadia’s Cauldron, Whiterun) increases your Alchemy skill.
  • The Black Arrow, v2 (found in Valtheim Towers or the Drunken Huntsman in Whiterun) boosts your Archery skill.
  • Horror of Castle Xyr (found in the Glenmoril Coven or Rannveig’s Fast) increases your Destruction skill.
  • Enchanter’s Primer (found in Carlotta Valentia’s house in Whiterun or Honeyside after purchasing it in Riften ) boosts your Enchanting skill.

Hone many skills simultaneously.

Improving many skills levels you up faster than focusing on one.

  • For example, sneaking around at night and pickpocketing people while they sleep boosts your Lockpicking, Sneak, and Pickpocketing skills simultaneously, making it easy to level up!
  • Similarly, attacking an enemy with your sword while wearing light armor, holding a shield, and healing yourself when you get hurt is a great way to boost your One-Handed, Block, Light Armor, and Restoration skills.

Tips from our Readers

  • Gather everything when out exploring. Mixing random ingredients ups the alchemy skill and they make good money too. If you get enchanted armor, it can be disenchanted to learn the enchantment and up your enchantment skill. Even junk you find can be sold to someone for low gold. Every interaction ups your speech skill, which is one of the hardest to level up.
  • To level Sneak, go to a Guard Barracks. I go to the back room of the barracks in back of Whiterun. Except during shift change, when the sleeping guards wake up to leave for work and the previous shift comes in, there are 6 guards: 5 sleeping and one awake. Just sneak back and forth between the two rooms with sleeping guards.
  • With the black market black book ability, you can raise the speech skill by selling the dremora merchan items.
  • Try focusing on forging jewelry. The more expensive, the faster you'll level up.

Best Ways To Level Up Fast In Skyrim

Leveling one's character is a vital part of any RPG — but when there's so much to do and the player is stuck at a low level, it can get frustrating. This can often be the case in Skyrim , where there are bosses to fight, guilds to join, worlds to save, and lives to end. Fortunately, Skyrim players have learned plenty of ways to level various skills fast. No matter which skills the Dragonborn chooses to build, every increase results in progress toward the next level.

If players are looking to level up quickly to gain those stat increases and perk points, these strategies should help. Though all leveling tricks involve some grinding, most can be incorporated into regular gameplay, keeping things from getting too tedious. As long as players don't mind breaking the game a bit to make the Dragonborn extremely adept and powerful in no time, they'll love checking out the many ways players have used Skyrim's systems to make their version of this hero as powerful as possible.

Skyrim: 12 Things That Can Ruin Your Playthrough

Updated May 4, 2024, by Ritwik Mitra: Skyrim is one of the greatest open-world RPGs ever made, propelling Bethesda to the stratosphere of popularity and letting them milk a cash cow that players can't get enough of. Despite the controversies that Bethesda has found itself in time and again, fans still come back to Skyrim . It's a testament to the sheer potential of this title that players are still seeking out the best ways possible to level up their Dragonborn's skills, turning them from a worthless chump into a hero capable of defeating multiple dragons in no time.

Disenchant Items All The Time

Skills targeted: enchanting.

Most people who try to level up as many skills as possible end up completely forgetting about Enchanting. With the sheer amount of quality loot that players can obtain, it's easy to see why Enchanting isn't the most appealing skill. However, players may not be aware that leveling up this skill is as easy as can be.

With access to an Enchanting Table, players can take useless loot with enchantments they aren't familiar with. They can use the Arcane Enchanter to disenchant said item to level up their skill and learn another enchantment. It takes care of two birds with one stone and takes very little time, making it a great task that players can accomplish from time to time.

Make The Most Of The Invulnerability Of Essential NPCs

Skills targeted: all combat and offensive magic skills.

Some companions, along with a few NPCs relevant to Skyrim 's quests, cannot be killed no matter how hard players try. While regular NPCs can still turn hostile and throw a wedge into the player's story, companions are so obedient that they have no problems turning into a punching bag for the Dragonborn no matter how much they wail on them.

This can be exploited to level up the Dragonborn's combat skills, as long as players don't mind pulverizing their friends over and over again. Keep in mind that skills don't level up when attacking companions who are downed, so players need to wait for a while until their companion's HP is full before wailing on them again.

An Exploit In The "Recipe For Disaster" Quest

Skills targeted: speech.

Sometimes, players just want to level up a skill as much as possible without worrying about breaking immersion. One such exploit for the Speech skill can be used if the player is a member of the Dark Brotherhood. One of the quests from this guild is "Recipe for Disaster," which has a rather amusing exploit that players can abuse for their benefit.

This quest entails players going to Markarth and questioning a man called Anton Virane. There's a part in the conversation where players can Intimidate him to get some information. Doing this and exiting out of the conversation quickly will let players repeat this action, and bring their Speech skill up to 100 in no time.

Find As Many Skill Books As Possible

Skills targeted: all.

Skill Books are always great to find, especially since they let players enjoy a free point in a random skill at no cost. This makes it essential to leap at any chance to acquire a skill book in the game by hook or by crook.

The Elder Scrolls: 6 Oldest Dragons, Ranked

If players want, they can follow guides to find out the location of pre-placed skill books in the game, which can make the leveling process easier. Multiple playthroughs of Skyrim can make the early game a bit grating to deal with, making it easy to see why players would prefer to just do everything in their power to level up and gain access to better weapons, items, spells, armor, and anything else along the same lines.

Employ The Benefit Of Certain Standing Stones

The Standing Stones scattered all across Skyrim offer different benefits to the player whenever they interact with them. However, three of these in particular are perfect for players who wish to hasten the process of leveling up the Dragonborn.

The Lover Stone, Mage Stone, Thief Stone, and Warrior Stone all play their part in helping out the Dragonborn. If players are lucky enough to stumble upon one of these Standing Stones, then they should make a note of its location while also making the most of the skill buffs it provides.

Spam The Transmute Mineral Ore Spell

Skills targeted: alteration.

Many spells in Skyrim can be spammed to increase the values of that particular skill tree . Such is the case with the Transmute Mineral Ore spell, which is about as effective as most people would expect.

Using this spell helps players convert the ore in their inventory into something of higher value. If players have the magicka to spare, then this spell will let them earn a quick buck and level up their Alteration skill in the process, too.

Sneak Attack Hadvar Or Ralof Over And Over

Skills targeted: one-handed, sneak.

When Alduin attacks Helgen, players have the choice of going with either Hadvar or Ralof in a bid to escape this monstrosity. This ends up being a way to start the tutorial of Skyrim , where players learn the ropes, and includes a moment where they need to sneak around a bear.

Skyrim: The Most Useful Inventory Mods

During this instance, players can sneak attack one of these two characters time and time again to improve both Sneak and One-Handed. Patient players can gain many levels before they are even let loose into the vast world of Skyrim in the first place.

Combine Telekinesis And Fast Traveling

Players who want to dabble in Alteration and want to level up quickly should make it a point to unlock Telekinesis as quickly as possible. Doing so allows them to exploit one of the most famous leveling cheats in the game.

Players need to cast this spell on an object, then open the world map and fast-travel while Telekinesis is still active. If done correctly, players will gain a ton of points in Alteration and level-up bucketloads.

Spam Soul Trap

Skills targeted: conjuration.

Conjuration is another great skill tree that players can focus on if they want to summon deadly monsters in combat. It also has a simple yet useful spell called Soul Trap that is unlocked pretty early on and can be spammed on corpses to level up Conjuration.

Doing so on every dead body in the game can lead to Conjuration leveling up in no time at all. Not only will players gain valuable levels by doing this, but they can also unlock more powerful spells in no time at all.

Get Circle Of Protection As Soon As Possible

Skills targeted: restoration.

Another magic tree that is worth investing in is Restoration. Players who don't want to carry too many potions can simply rely on the spells in this tree to heal themselves and their allies instead .

The Best Games To Play If You Like Skyrim

One of the best spells to take in Conjuration is Circle of Protection, which can be cast over and over again to raise this stat without too many issues. Level grinding becomes a breeze once the Dragonborn has access to this spell.

Beat Up Shadowmere

Skills targeted: all combat skills.

Shadowmere is an immortal mount that reappears if it takes too much damage, making it the preferred choice for horse riders in Skyrim . That being said, players who don't mind being a bit cruel can abuse the immortality of this horse to raise their attack-minded stats with ease.

Players can use the weapons they have to beat Shadowmere within an inch of his life before letting him regenerate his health and start the process anew. It can take some time, but this relentless horse abuse leads to players increasing their melee stats in no time flat.

Craft Weapons And Armor

Skills targeted: smithing.

One of the most well-known tricks to level up is exploring the smithing in Skyrim . Generally speaking, blacksmithing can be used by the player to craft leveled equipment that helps them tackle tougher dungeons with ease, but those who want to cheese the leveling system can use smithing for nefarious purposes instead.

Players can craft the weakest and cheapest item — like an Iron Sword — over and over again to upgrade this skill and level up their character multiple times in one go. It's a well-known exploit that has become legendary among fans of Skyrim .

Rest In An Owned Bed, Preferably With A Loved One

Players can rest up in several beds across Skyrim , but the abundance of healing items means that most people don't find a use for this mechanic. However, these players will be singing a different tune once they realize that resting for a while gives a temporary bonus to XP gain.

Ideally, players should try and sleep in their own house or in a room they paid for. The best way to maximize XP gain using this method is to marry one of the many prospects in Skyrim before sleeping with them in a shared bed to gain the "Lover's Comfort" buff, increasing XP gain by 15% for eight in-game hours.

Sneak Around In Every Encounter

Skills targeted: sneak.

Sneaking is one of the most fun things to do in Skyrim , which is perhaps why so many people love the Stealth Archer build in the game. However, sneaking serves another purpose that is great for players who want all their actions to contribute to their level.

Skyrim: Ranking Every Playable Race From Worst To Best

Fittingly enough, using stealth in Skyrim increases the Sneak stat, and this can happen quite a bit if players decide to sneak their way around every encounter. It's a simple and fun way to level up in the game while also making sneaking easier and a lot more fun in the meantime.

The Equilibrium + Healing Trick

Skills targeted: restoration, alteration.

Restoration and Alteration are two schools of magic with a variety of applications, and this trick helps players level them both. Equilibrium is an Alteration spell that drains HP to restore Magicka while healing spells cost Magicka to restore HP. By equipping these two spells in each hand, players can alternate them for as long as they like.

Spam Equilibrium until health gets low, and then spam Healing to bring it back up . Repeat this process, and gamers can sit back and watch both Alteration and Restoration rise. That said, players should be careful that the Dragonborn doesn't accidentally die while using Equilibrium, as this is easily possible.

Break Lockpicks

Skills targeted: lockpicking.

Sometimes, practicing is more important than succeeding, and that's certainly the case for Lockpicking in Skyrim . Every time the player breaks a lockpick, the skill increases by a small amount. This means that the Dragonborn can repeatedly try to break into houses and locked chests and simply fail over and over until they level up.

Admittedly, this is one of the more tedious leveling tricks out there; however, it's often worth it for Skyrim's thieves and plunderers. To use this trick and avoid getting caught by angry NPCs, the Thieves Guild in Riften has a room full of locked chests specifically to practice this skill. Players can gather a massive stack of lockpicks and break them all trying to get those locks open.

Spam Muffle & Clairvoyance

Skills targeted: illusion.

There are lots of low-level Illusion spells out there, but ones like Fury, Fear, or even Calm will cause town guards to turn hostile to the Dragonborn. To level Illusion quickly, the best options are spells that affect oneself, as any other friendly NPCs won't react to them being used.

Skyrim: 18 Best Items For A Mage (And How To Get Them)

With this in mind, holding the Clairvoyance spell is one way to level Illusion — albeit rather slowly. Repeatedly casting Muffle also works well and can quickly get players to level 40 or higher in a short amount of time. Since the latter can have a hefty Magicka cost at lower levels, players should equip enchanted gear to help it regenerate faster and speed the process along.

Summon & Banish Creatures

Conjuration can be an incredibly valuable school of magic , but at low levels, it's not good for all that much. Fortunately, there's an easy way to level it: call up a familiar or an Atronach and immediately send it from whence it came. Players can repeat until the skill reaches the desired level. As with other magical leveling tricks, wearing gear with the Regenerate Magicka effect helps speed things up, as players have less time to wait for it to recharge.

Conjure Familiar consumes the least Magicka out of all the summoning spells, but Conjure Flame Atronach can be a good option as well. Summon the creature, and then cast Banish Daedra (or Expel Daedra for higher-level summons). Each of these spells raises Conjuration. What's more, neither will make nearby NPCs hostile, so the Dragonborn can do this anywhere.

Use The Most Valuable Enchantments

Enchanting is often an easy way to both increase levels and earn some quick coin. Players often find themselves picking up weapons and gear that they have no use for, and enchanting them before selling exponentially raises their value.

Most importantly, the more valuable the enchantment applied, the more the Enchanting skill will increase. By far the best enchantment to use for weapons is Banish Daedra, though Paralyze is also a good choice. Meanwhile, Fortify Destruction and Fortify Sneak are the most valuable armor enchantments. So, players should stock up on Soul Gems and find an Arcane Enchanter.

Know The Highest-Value Potion Recipes

Skills targeted: alchemy.

As with Enchanting, crafting higher-value items at the alchemy lab will level the skill much faster than cheap ones. Fortify Carry Weight is one highly valuable effect, along with Invisibility, Slow, and Regenerate Health/Stamina/Magicka. Additionally, potions made with Giant's Toe have much longer-lasting and potent effects, making them more valuable and thus providing a greater skill increase when crafted.

Skyrim: 25 Tips To Get Off To A Good Start As A Beginner

Some top recipes for alchemy leveling include:

  • Giant's Toe, Creep Cluster, Wheat
  • Giant's Toe, River Betty, Large Antlers
  • River Betty, Deathbell, Creep Cluster
  • Luna Moth Wing, Vampire Dust, Hawk Feathers

Not all of these will be strictly useful, as some mix beneficial effects with poisonous ones. However, they can all be sold for profit.
