Joseph Campbell Audio & Video

If you are interested in Joseph Campbell's work and want to learn more, there's no better way than to hear it taught by the man himself. The titles listed below are your best resource on the internet for everything published on audio by the master of myth. Let LearnOutLoud.com help you discover the world of stories that have shaped human history.

Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth is a 1988 documentary series featuring six hour-long conversations between journalist Bill Moyers and mythologist Joseph Campbell. Campbell was a professor at Sarah Lawrence College in New York, and he authored many books, including his most famous book in 1949 entitled The Hero With a Thousand Faces.

Joseph Campbell transformed the way we view mythology...

In this first interview from the PBS series Joseph Campbell and The Power of Myth, Bill Moyers questions Joseph Campbell on the role of the hero. Using his vast mythological knowledge, Campbell describes archetypes of heroes that arise in cultures throughout human history.

Joseph Campbell, arguably the greatest mythologist of the twentieth century, was certainly one of our greatest storytellers.

Countless would-be readers and listeners of Finnegans Wake - James Joyce's 1939 masterwork, on which he labored for a third of his life - have given up after a few pages and "dismissed the book as a perverse triumph of the unintelligible.

In this third part of the PBS series Joseph Campbell and The Power of Myth, Campbell talks about the earliest myths and their relation to rituals. He discusses the rituals around the stations of life, such as initiations into adulthood...

An exhilarating journey into the mind and spirit of a remarkable man, a legendary teacher, and a masterful storyteller, conducted by TV journalist Bill Moyers for their acclaimed PBS series.

Selected letters capturing ongoing conversations between famed mythologist Joseph Campbell and a remarkable group of artists, seekers, filmmakers, novelists, and scholars

In this work, beloved mythologist Joseph Campbell explores the Space Age. He posits that the newly discovered laws of outer space are actually within us as well, and that a new mythology is implicit in that realization.

In this second part of the PBS series Joseph Campbell and The Power of Myth, Moyers and Campbell discuss creation myths and the tremendous consequences they have for civilizations.

In 1954, he took a sabbatical from his teaching position and embarked on a year-long voyage through India, Thailand, Cambodia, Burma, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and finally Japan.

Publisher's Summary

Joseph Campbell, arguably the greatest mythologist of the twentieth century, was certainly one of our greatest storytellers. This masterfully crafted book interweaves conversations between Campbell and some of the people he inspired, including poet Robert Bly, anthropologist Angeles Arrien, filmmaker David Kennard, Doors drummer John Densmore, psychiatric pioneer Stanislov Grof, Nobel laureate Roger Guillemen, and others. Campbell reflects on subjects ranging from the origins and functions of myth, the role of the artist, and the need for ritual to the ordeals of love and romance. With poetry and humor, Campbell recounts his own quest and conveys the excitement of his lifelong exploration of our mythic traditions, what he called “the one great story of mankind.”

loved the experience of hearing JC's works, and wisdom. So special. Feel privileged to have been welcomed to his world.... which is all of our worlds

phenomenal gift, something to re read frequently

Joseph Campbell journey of thought in linking mythology, as its genuine role to offer a coherence to life, our role, our growth, our spirit is marvellous. Rarely does one wake to ideas gifted to us which pierce every notion of ourselves, and call us in comfort to our spirited selves. This feeling of emotional and intellectual shape shifting is the gift of Joseph Campbell works. Highly recommend listening, reading, and rereading this gift.

Won’t get these lost hours back.

The legend of myth of Campbell is greater than the man. I like his metamyth idea but the man himself is boring, arrogant, racist and sexist. I will give this book which is a strange ego projection festival a pass.

I find it incomprehensible when Joseph is asked unrelated questions to his work. Never the less I found this book nutritious for lack of a better word. There is something special going on here and It was not intellectually pressing in the slightest, more like listening to a good radio program from the old days. A good intro to Joseph Campbell and my full gratitude to all.
