Fish Hunt Combo
For years guests have encouraged us to prepare a combination Fishing and Hunting trip, combining the Alaskan Fishing and Alaskan Hunting worlds. We have remained hesitant as the two optimal time periods for each, Summer being best for fishing, and Fall being best for Hunting, barely overlap.
After a lot of research (which was a lot of fun) we’ve decided to offer the last two weeks of September as a Fish Hunt Combo package. During this time we will offer fully guided fishing for Halibut, Rockfish, Cod, and Tanner (Snow) Crab in the salt, Silver Salmon and Steelhead in fresh water, and unguided hunting for Sitka Black Tailed Deer in the mountains.
As specialized weeks focusing on this exact timeframe overlap, we will fix the arrival and departure of each week ahead of schedule; with less flexibility than we do throughout the rest of our seasons. Please check with us if you’re interested in the trip and to find out when the two weeks will start!
Standard in each package:
- Round trip transportation by boat or a local sea plane charter to Kodiak Raspberry Island Remote Lodge from the Kodiak City Airport.
- A beautiful location in the remote wilderness surrounded by ocean and 2,000 foot mountains with amazing views of the surrounding flora and fauna, where bear, deer, elk and ducks have all been spotted from within the lodge.
- All lodging in heated, private guest cabins with beautiful views, complete bathroom, comfortable mattresses, fresh flannel sheets, and down comforters.
- Comfortable main lodge, boasting the surrounding views, a large lounge with wood stove, rustic furniture and local art, spacious dining room with hand built tables, and a large open kitchen to watch our chef at work and enjoy hors d’oeuvres.
- Hot tub, hot showers, and hot banya (sauna), including fresh, clean towels, soap and shampoo.
- Laundry facility for guests’ use.
- Twenty-four hour hydroelectric generated electricity, backed up by a quiet diesel generator, only if needed.
- Wireless internet.
- Plentiful, hot, home cooked meals focusing on what your body needs to do the work you’ll be doing. Meals typically feature pastas, steaks, fresh salads, home made breads, and daily made desserts.
- Daily prepared field lunches, including snacks.
- Complimentary beer on tap brewed in Kodiak by the Kodiak Island Brewing Company and wines paired to the evening meal .
- No Smoking Property, including on our fishing boats, effective spring of 2018. Smokers are welcome to smoke on one of our beaches in front of the property.
- Fully guided and outfitted fishing.
- Fully guided daily drop off and pick up hunting with a registered big game guide.
- Complete fish processing, vacuum sealing, and freezing.
- Daily drop off and pick up from a heated, comfortable boat operated by a Coast Guard Licensed Captain and Transporter.
- Meat storage in our large meat house safe from bears.
- Trophy preparation for your taxidermist by your registered big game guide and basic meat preparation and boxing for transport to your butcher.
- Gift store at the lodge to browse through at guests’ leisure.
- Any necessary land use permits to hunt and fish on private property.
Our price does not include:
- Hunting and fishing licenses and deer tags available at the Alaska Department of Fish and Game
- Butchering of your deer meat. You can have it butchered in Kodiak or Anchorage and shipped home, or transfer it to us if you don’t want the meat.
- Transport of your fish/game back to home from Kodiak City.

About hunting in Alaska
The word Alaska means “The Great Land,” and the state’s nickname is “The Last Frontier.” Both are appropriate monikers for a state containing huge swaths of wild country and uninhabited areas—a true hunter’s paradise, home to North America’s largest and most sought-after game animals. Covering 365,000,000 acres, an area one-fifth the size of the entire United States, Alaska has plenty of room for the adventurous hunter to roam. Alaska has more than a dozen species of big-game animals as well as excellent small game and waterfowl hunting opportunities. Big-game species include bison, caribou, elk, muskox, wolves, black bears, Dall sheep, moose, brown and grizzly bears, Sitka black-tailed deer, and mountain goats. Most hunting in Alaska occurs between August and October, but bears may be taken in either fall or spring in some locations. Alaska requires nonresidents hunting brown/grizzly bears, Dall sheep, or mountain goats to be accompanied by an Alaska-licensed guide or by an Alaska resident at least 19 years of age who is a close relative, defined as within the "second degree of kindred.” Nonresident aliens are required to have a guide to hunt any big-game animal in Alaska. All big-game guides in Alaska must be licensed by the state. For some hunts in Alaska, it is possible to hire a transporter instead of a guide. These are licensed individuals and companies who help hunters get to remote areas by bush plane, boat, horse, ATV, snow machine, etc. The Alaska Department of Fish & Game ( adfg.alaska.gov ) has an excellent website with in-depth information about hunting in the state. Check the site for specific license and tag requirements for each species. The Alaska Professional Hunters Association is another great source of information about Alaska: alaskaprohunter.org .

Yacht cruise, "kicked some hali-butt".
"Although the salmon and halibut seasons are winding down our guide and captain, Travis, managed to find us King salmon and Halibut. This was an extra full-day charter. We left at 8am and returned around 6pm. Our guide was determined not to send anyone on our boat home without fish. Such a great group of people including the office staff and chief filleting specialist!!" -Arizona, September 2019

"Best Day Ever!"
“We chartered a boat to go Halibut fishing in Homer Alaska for the whole family (12).
Captain Billy and Deck Hand Grace were amazing. We never had any reason to want for anything.
The first fish in the boat within a minute of arrival at the first fishing spot was 59+ inches and over 100 lbs.
That set the tone for the day. We caught the limit for the boat and had so much fun.
Great family outing. Great day on the water.
If you want to go fishing out of Homer, this is the company to go with! ”
-Alaska, September 2019
"Highly Recommend!"
"It's 4th of July and our group of 8 went to halibut fishing with Captain Nick and deckhand Danielle of the SeaHawk. It is the first time ocean fishing for many of us. Nick and Danielle tried very hard making sure everyone is taken care of. Nick took us to two fishing spots and hooked fish right away in both locations. You can imagine the excitement and chaos when multiple fishes on the hook ;-) We had a lot of fun! On the way back, Danielle single-handedly filleted all the fishes for several hours. We were so impressed! I highly recommend Homer Ocean Charters if you are looking for great fishing experience at Homer." -California, July 2019

Typical Length of Stay
Due to the nature of the wide spectrum of hunts that Kodiak Wilderness Adventures provides, we do not have a single “typical ” length of stay during the hunting seasons, however here are a few of the hunt durations that we provide:
- Kodiak Brown Bear, 10 days/15 days
- Sitka Blacktail Deer, 5 days/6 nights (from lodge)
- Sea Duck & combination Sea Duck & Sitka Blacktail Deer, 5 days/6 nights
Arrival & Departure Details
Dates are built around the weekly calendar and we have tailored our fishing trip schedule to coincide with a weekend arrival and departure. Guests arrive on Sunday and typically depart on the following Saturday. Our Brown Bear hunts are scheduled to coincide with the season opening in the fall (October 25th) and the season closing date in the Spring (May 15th.) The arrival and departure dates on the Brown Bear hunts are somewhat flexible! We prefer to have the shorter hunts begin on a Sunday for the convenience of a weekend arrival, however for the conveyance of travel on the Alaska Marine Highway System ferry vessels, The M/V Tustemena & M/V Kennicot we will work our schedule to meet yours.
Departures are a very busy time around the lodge as we prepare our guests for their journey back to their homes or on to the next stop in their adventure in the Northland. We encourage our guests to book their flights from Kodiak to Anchorage no earlier than mid-morning (10:30 am).
Learn more about arranging travel to Kodiak Wilderness Adventures Lodge on our Getting to Kodiak page.

Alaska Cast-and-Blast
Four flyways outfitters - cold bay.
The Cast-and-Blast is the first three weeks of September. Cold Bay is roughly 630 miles southwest of Anchorage. The Alaska Peninsula is bordered by the Bering Sea to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the south. Four Flyways are full-time guides for waterfowl hunting trips. Groups are limited to eight hunters per week.
Four Flyways Outfitters
They fish two small rivers and a couple of creeks. Silver salmon fishing can be exceptional during the first three weeks of September. Dolly Varden are abundant and are a lot of fun on light tackle. Chum and pink salmon are also present. On the pier, some saltwater fishing is available for cod, flounder, halibut, and more. They use Achilles inflatable boats to access prime hunting locations on Izembek Lagoon and surrounding areas. They occasionally hunt the Cold Bay side of the Peninsula and nearby upland areas. They use a large spread of custom-painted Brant decoys, Canada goose decoys, and duck decoys to lure all these species within close range. They use the best gear possible to make your hunt more successful and enjoyable. They have a wide variety of hunting and fishing available and will cater the hunting and fishing to each group’s goals. Black brant are the most abundant species of waterfowl in the Cold Bay area. Izembek Lagoon offers the best black Brant hunting anywhere. Taverner cackling geese are also very abundant. Pintails are by far the most abundant puddle duck species in the area. They also have a good number of mallards, wigeon, and green-winged teal. Ptarmigan are plentiful on the tundra in the Cold Bay uplands.
Cold Bay Seasons:
Season: September 1 - December 15 • The first three weeks of September are best for the Cast & Blast. • September 25 - October is great hunting, with some steelhead, a few silvers, and dollies. • November and December is time for trophy Brant, sea ducks, ptarmigan, plus other ducks. Fishing Equipment: Guests are encouraged to bring their own fishing gear. They can also use the Lodge's fly, bait cast, spinning, and related tackle.
A Typical Day: Each trip is tailored to the group’s interests. 7:00 a.m., you’ll enjoy a hearty breakfast. Snacks are packed to-go to eat in the field. Midday: Lunch plans will vary based on the time of year and the activities. Guides will either pack food for when the weather and tides allow you to stay out hunting and fishing all day, or you will return to the Lodge in between activities for a warm, filling lunch. Dark: On most days, you'll hunt until dark, although most of the hunting is more influenced by the tides than the time of day. If you’ve lost days due to bad weather, you may be able to fit in a half-day of hunting or fishing on the day of your departure, depending on your departure time.

Guy Schoenborn's 2014 Recap
I hosted a group of hunter/anglers at Four Flyways Outfitters in Cold Bay, Alaska, September 7-13, 2014. For our stay, we had a real mixed bag. The first evening we went out for brant on Izembek Lagoon. We split into two groups to keep the birds moving and set out a few brant decoys. We ended up with near limits on the brant and a couple of Canada geese. Most of the group fished for silvers in a couple of the local streams the next morning. We caught some nice fish up to 13 lbs on flies and lures. The flies outperformed the lures most of the trip. We took the salmon down to the pier to fillet them and brought some outfits to fish for cod from the pier. The cod fishing was amazing, using pieces of salmon belly or chunks of cod on a jig-hook or circle hook rig. Some of the guys caught at least 20 in a couple of hours. We shot a few ptarmigans while driving from one location to another in the Izembek Lagoon Refuge. The ptarmigan were brown on top and were starting to turn white on the underside. We did a couple of brant shoots from a layout boat with decoys near the boat. What an effective method of hunting these open-water birds. They would come right into the decoys and not even pay attention to the gunner in the layout boat until it was too late. We had a couple of days where the wind was blowing too hard to take the boat, and we hiked a couple of miles or more into some ponds or along the lagoon for ducks, geese, and brant. One of those days, six of us shot 56 mallards, teal, pintails, brant, and Canada’s. The staff barbecued some of the brant and teal, and we had cod, fish, and chips. The brant were amazing. They are the best-eating waterfowl I have ever had. For those of you who would like a mixed bag Cast-and-Blast type trip, you can’t beat the options at Four Way Outfitters. - Guy Schoenborn

ALASKA HUNTING & FISHING
Sitka blacktail deer.
Sitka Blacktail Deer were transplanted to Kodiak Island in the 1930’s and have come to thrive on the lush vegetation the island provides. The hunting season is long and generous with it starting on August 1 and running until December 31 on the remote areas of the island.
The meat on these deer is some of the best eating venison you will find and the bucks are generally described as some of the most handsome deer with their black cap, double throat patch and heavy compact antlers.
Early season hunting involves climbing to the tops of the hills to the alpine meadows to find the older bucks. As the season progresses and the snow moves down the mountains, deer will also come down in elevation sometimes all the way to the beach on years with a lot of snow.
Kodiak Island is a waterfowl haven for a variety of unique species. From early season puddle ducks to all the varieties of Sea Ducks, waterfowl hunting here can be phenomenal! The biggest draw for Kodiak duck hunting is the variety of Sea Ducks. From the beautiful Harlequins to the regal Long-tailed (Oldsquaw) and all 3 species of Scoters there are plenty of specimens to choose from. There are Eiders available very late in the season with the Common Eider wintering around Kodiak and on rare occasions a King Eider making an appearance. There are also a variety of other diving ducks that winter here with Barrow’s Goldeneye and Buffleheads some of the most common. The rich marine environment creates an ideal wintering ground that holds tens of thousands of birds all season. Our season around Kodiak starts in early October and runs through the middle of January, with the best Sea Duck hunting starting in mid-November.
Both Rock & Willow Ptarmigan inhabit the treeless areas of Kodiak Island. These grouse-like birds provide fun hunting and delicious table fare. In the fall they molt their brown summer feathers and regrow their white winter feathers, which gives them unique and beautiful mottling. Both types can be found in the high alpine areas of the island with only the Willow Ptarmigan available in the lowland tundra areas. Flying into small tundra lakes on the western part of the island and hunting the surrounding muskeg is the most effective way to find large flocks of birds.
Our lodge is a premier Alaskan fishing and hunting lodge on Kodiak Island, the second largest island in the United States. We offer both freshwater and saltwater fishing. Our location in the village of Larsen Bay, a 30-minute flight from Kodiak City, provides world class salmon and halibut fishing with our expert guides. Our guides and our equipment are top notch, yet we are careful to provide a good value to our guests that is unmatched by many lodges.
Kodiak Island has hundreds of streams that fill with returning salmon every summer. Whether you want to target tasty Red salmon, hard fighting Chum salmon, feisty Pink salmon or aggressive Silver salmon there are multiple options not far from the lodge. To add to the variety there are Dolly Varden available in each of the streams all season and Steelhead in a couple of streams late in the season. Timing for each species is paramount to success.
We will put you in the prime spots for huge kings, feisty silvers, monster halibut and a host of rockfish species. Custom designed 29’ North River Seahawk Walk-Around boats are perfect for getting you in the best waters to catch fish.
June – September are the best fishing months. It just depends on what you want to fish for. If it’s King Salmon, then June & July are the best. If it’s Coho Salmon, then August & September are the best. Halibut and rock fish are generally good all season!!!
Come join us for the Alaska fishing or hunting adventure of a lifetime at our lodge in Kodiak Island. Our expert guides have almost 30 years of combined experience in these waters. More than a destination, this location is an outdoor haven for Kodiak salmon fishing, halibut fishing, yellow eye fishing, Sitka blacktail deer hunting, duck hunting, bear viewing, whale watching and wildlife photography. Far from the stresses of everyday life, our lodge provides the ultimate Alaskan vacation in a place where time stands still and worries vanish. LODGE INFORMATION
Our lodge consists of two main buildings on the Larsen Bay waterfront. Our dining lodge is a separate structure from the sleeping lodge so that guests that wish to stay up late won’t disturb those that want to retire early.
We offer seven, clean and well-appointed rooms with 4 baths. We designed each room to provide privacy and protection from the snorers in the group. Six of the rooms have a single queen bed with deluxe mattresses and are divided with a shared shower and toilet. Each room has its own separate sink area, however. Our seventh room is a suite with two queen beds, a fireplace and private bath. Groups of 8-10 get the full lodge.
Our dining lodge boasts a commercial kitchen, a wood burning stove and an outside deck overlooking the bay. Guests enjoy cocktails and delicious appetizers after a long day of fishing and getting to know the other guests. Meals are thoughtfully prepared by our expert chef and clients rave about the quality of our food. A typical meal might include fish that was caught just a few hours earlier so if you’ve thought you were eating fresh fish at restaurants wait until you taste this! We also grow our own vegetables in the village so it is a true farm to market experience with a focus on quality. Not fancy necessarily, but a very welcomed surprise for most.

Lonely Plan-it: A fishing trip to Alaska
Apr 24, 2024 • 7 min read

For many Alaska visitors, the chance to drop a line in the briny depths of the ocean, or cast a fly rod upon a rushing river, is the reason they’ve traveled north – and for good reason. There is nothing quite like fresh fish – caught amid the stunning scenery of Alaska – consumed over a dinner table filled with tales of the day itself.
Alaska’s commercial fishing industry is its second-largest economic generator, with a wide variety of species found across the state. From mid-April to August, saltwater fishing vessels of varying sizes and shapes take to the sea and net or line-catch salmon, halibut, cod and other species for markets around the world. Sport fishing is also a huge business in Alaska, including the Arctic and Northwest regions, where species like Arctic char are considered a fly-fisher’s dream for their fight on a line.
For these reasons, you’ll need to consider the seasons, types of fishing and the most accessible locations for your fishing holiday. In a state with 3,000 rivers, three million lakes, and over 6,000 miles of coastline, the toughest part is deciding where to go.
What are the regulations for fishing in Alaska?
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game is the state’s overseeing agency for all things sport fishing, and it tightly controls where, when, and what species you can catch. Dividing the state into three regions (Southcentral, Interior, and Southeastern) the agency provides up-to-date listings of open and closed areas, and forecasts for salmon runs each spring, when many anglers are making plans for fishing trips.
All nonresidents aged 16 and older must purchase and carry a current fishing license , available either online or at retail outlets in just about every city. Additionally, those wanting to fish for king salmon must secure a stamp indicating this intention, which is added to your license. It must be noted here that the ADF&G does not take fishing without a license lightly: officers are constantly patrolling shorelines and salt waterways – and fines for non-licensed fishers are hefty.
Know your halibut from chinook
It behooves the fishing visitor to have an idea of what type of fish they’d like to catch while in Alaska. Those looking for salmon have the choice to fish in either saltwater near Whittier, Seward, Valdez or Homer and nearby environs; or in the rivers and streams flowing near these communities, but also in Anchorage and along the Southwest regional areas like Dillingham and Katmai National Park.
Know that the farther away from the road system one goes, the more expensive fishing will get, especially if you need a float plane to reach a river. Alaska's waters house five species of salmon: chum, sockeye, pink, chinook and coho. Each spawn at different times of year, beginning with chinook (also known as king salmon) in late spring.
Other freshwater fish include Arctic char, grayling and trout – the latter usually fished in September and October.
Saltwater species are abundant and accessible in any harbor community, but halibut are predominant in the community of Homer at the tip of the Kenai Peninsula . In fact it is known as the “halibut capital of the world” with fish hauled in here reaching 200 pounds in weight.
Best destinations for a DIY fishing trip
- Cast a line into the river for world-class salmon fishing on the Kenai River near Cooper Landing .
- Head out to deeper waters of Cook Inlet from Homer to fish for halibut.
- Show up to Ship Creek in Anchorage and rent the entire kit to fish like a local.
- Fly-fish the sparkling waters of the Little Tok River near the community of Tok, in the Yukon-Charley Rivers Preserve.
- Try the family-friendly Bering Sea Crab Fisherman's Tour in Ketchikan for a look at the dangerous deep-sea crab industry.
Top tips for fishing in Juneau
Located along Alaska’s Inside Passage, Juneau is a great landing spot for Southeast fishers wanting to haul in a halibut or salmon. Charters depart from both downtown docks and Auke Bay about 15 miles from the city center.
Where to stay: Spend the night downtown at the Silverbow Inn and take in the charm of Alaska’s capital city.
Where to eat: For fresh seafood and local atmosphere, dine at the Hangar on the Wharf and watch floatplanes and ships come in and out.
What to expect in Seward
A popular destination for both cruise ship and independent travelers, Seward is also a hotspot for Anchorage residents looking for a weekend getaway. The calm waters of Resurrection Bay glean salmon, halibut, rockfish and cod and are great places for youngsters to learn the art of saltwater fishing.
Where to stay: Harbor 360 hotel sits right at the small boat harbor and offers a complimentary breakfast and access to downtown Seward activities, including fishing charters.
Where to eat: The Cookery in downtown Seward is small but its menu of fresh seafood and produce packs a delicious punch.
Visiting Valdez
This scenic Prince William Sound community lives hard by the sea, with daily salmon, halibut, and rockfish charters departing from its small boat harbor. Visit during the pink salmon run in early July and see the commercial purse seiners hauling up enormous nets of delicious fish.
Where to stay: Totem Hotel and Suites is a good option and a short distance from the downtown docks.
Where to eat: Try The Fat Mermaid for locally-sourced seafood right along the main street of Valdez and within walking distance to activities.
Remote fishing experiences in Alaska
If a remote fishing experience is on your bucket list and within budget, these lodges provide a truly immersive once-in-a-lifetime Alaska fishing trip.
Waterfall Resort
Located on scenic Prince of Wales Island in Southeast Alaska, this homey lodge is reached via a 45-minute floatplane ride from Ketchikan and offers pristine scenery while fishing for salmon in the calm waterways around the island. This former salmon cannery-turned fishing lodge is a wonderful choice for groups and families.
Alaska Sportsman’s Lodge
A luxury resort located near one of the most productive sockeye salmon waterways in Alaska, the Kvichak River, this lodge is for serious fishers, with daily guided forays into the wilderness to cast a line. Want to fly fish for trout? This is the place for that as well, with large fish regularly caught and released.
Tordrillo Lodge
Want to throw in some other adventures while still finding time to fish? This hidden lodge deep in the Tordrillo Mountains just an hour floatplane ride from Anchorage is pretty much perfect, with salmon and trout fishing intermingled with heli-skiing, hiking, and rafting.
Be bear aware
Alaska’s bears frequent the same fishing rivers and streams as humans, and they always have the right of way. If you are fishing without a guide, review the Alaska Department of Fish and Game rules and guidelines for fishers , and always keep an eye out for bears, especially if fishing in the long, dusky Alaska evening hours.
What to pack for your fishing trip to Alaska
If taking a charter vessel, dress for inclement weather and a near-constant day of wetness and fish scales. Wear rubber boots, or non-slip, close-toed shoes – and bring rain gear, a warm hat and gloves.
For those heading out into the open waters of Prince William Sound or the Gulf of Alaska, consider pre-dosing with an anti-seasickness medication or wearing a behind-the-ear patch to prevent nausea during the trip. Even the most ardent sailors sometimes feel the rolling ocean swells to be too much to manage without medicine.
For river fishers, waders are a must, and non-felt wading shoes.
Don’t have gear? There’s no need to worry: most guiding outfits provide everything you need for a comfortable experience.
