UCSB has a range of campus environmental groups. While most of these are unique to UCSB, some are local branches of state or national groups.

Adventure Programs

UCSB Adventure Programs exists to enhance campus and community life by providing educational and recreational experiences through wilderness trips, outdoor recreation classes, ropes courses, and climbing center programs.

Aqua International

Aqua international’s mission is to aid developing regions throughout the world in establishing safe and sustainable water sources. We provide aid through education, volunteerism, and fundraising

Associated Students Bike Shop

The Students Bike Shop is a student-funded non-profit organization dedicated to education, service, and safety. We have everything needed to get your bike running safely and smoothly. You bring your ID card, your bike, your time, and an inclination to learn. We provide the tools and the advice.

Associated Students B.I.K.E.S. (Bicycle Improvements Keep Everyone Safe)

AS BIKES is an on campus bicycle system advocate. With an $88,000 budget each year, the student committee works to fund UCSB campus bikeway improvement projects as well as increase student, staff, faculty, and administration awareness and involvement with bicycle system issues.

Associated Students Coastal Fund

This organization provides funds to enhance, protect, and restore the local shoreline through preservation, education, open access, research, and restoration. Apply for funding today!

Associated Students Department of Public Worms

We are a student-run, student-funded organization with a focus on on-site composting on campus and on encouraging students to compost at home. We believe that composting food and other organic waste is not only an excellent way to reduce the pressure on landfills, but also to improve landscapes and gardens without the use of chemicals or artificial products and in a closed-loop cycle. We strive to encourage these environmentally friendly closed-loop systems on our campus and in our communities through education, demonstrations, and outreach. We highly value hands-on experience and believe that composting is often best viewed up close and personal.

Associated Students Environmental Affairs Board

The Environmental Affairs Board (EAB) is the largest and most active environmental group on campus. The charge of EAB is to protect, preserve and enhance the environment, principally at UCSB and its surrounding communities. We focus on ecology, energy, food, climate change, water policy and conservation, the economy, environmental justice and other issues.

Associated Students Food Bank

The Associated Students Food Bank is a student-run service that is available to all UCSB students, both graduate and undergraduate. We aim to eradicate hunger from our campus community by providing basic food supplies, toiletries, and information about additional resources to students in need.

Associated Students Food Cart Working Group

The student-run sustainable food cart aims to develop an inclusive community with student input built upon providing affordable, nutritious, and high quality food. Active promotion of healthy living through education and awareness of social justice issues is the base of student empowerment while promoting sustainable practices.

Associated Students Humyn Rights Board

The Humyn Rights Board of Associated Students is a coalition of human rights and social justice organizations at UCSB. The Board recognizes their mission of inclusively by creating forum that encourages, advocates, and promotes respectful and honest communication regarding the education and awareness of basic human rights principles.

Associated Students Recycling

AS Recycling is a student funded, student run organization that plays a critical role in the day-to-day recycling, composting, and electronic waste collection services at UCSB that have helped make this campus a state and national leader in waste reduction for nearly 20 years. At the same time, we recognize that teaching students and staff how to recycle, compost, and reduce waste can have a huge impact both on and off campus, and is the only way to achieve lasting change. We value our campus and community, and are committed to a goal of zero waste by 2020 at UCSB!

Associated Students Zero Waste Committee

The Zero Waste Committee strives to eliminate waste by promoting reduction, reuse and recycling of all materials used on the UCSB campus and the surrounding community, promoting composting, promoting the buying of recycled and sustainable products on the UCSB campus, and by working closely with other environmental groups.

Bee Conscious

Bee Conscious is a collective group of students concerned about the future welfare of the planet’s honey bee populations. This group learns, discusses, and spreads awareness on a variety of topics regarding honey bees – including but not limited to colony collapse.

Bren Students Sustainability Committee

The mission of BSSC is to continuously improve the environmental performance of the Bren School and its students. The BSSC is made up of a diverse set of people who all have an interest in sustainability and in improving Bren, the UCSB campus, and our community.

A public interest advocacy group fighting for environmental and social causes through legislative change.

California Student Sustainability Coalition

The California Student Sustainability Coalition is a non-profit organization that supports and connects students from across California to help them transform their educational institutions into models of sustainability.

Coal Oil Point Natural Reserve & Snowy Plover Docent Program

The Coal Oil Point Reserve is part of the University of California Santa Barbara Natural Reserve System. Learn about classes on the reserve, local stewardship, and the snowy plover docent program.

Community Affairs Board

Community Affairs Board is dedicated to enhancing the educational experience of all UCSB Students by providing information and easy access to community service work.

Educating Future Leaders

The Educating Leaders for the Future Program inspires youth to pursue sustainable academic and career pathways. We do this through classroom presentations in local high schools and through after school programs. Sustainability is being integrated into every sector of our economy and every major in higher education and yet not enough programs are preparing our youth for this shift.

Environmental Planning Coalition

The Environmental Planning Coalition enables environmentally-minded students to network and gain a deeper understanding for the planning profession.

ECOalition is an on campus coalition of many organizations working together to discuss environmental issues affecting the campus, to provide sustainable resources to the campus and community, and to bring a unified voice to UCSB’s environmental movement.

Excursion Club

An outdoor adventure club offering hiking, kayaking, climbing, and a variety of other activities and trips.

Gaucho Certified Farmers Market at UCSB

The Gaucho Certified Farmers Market is an avenue for staff, students, faculty, and the local community to access fresh, locally grown produce and artisan goods. We will bring together all facets of sustainability, helping to educate the UCSB community on healthy eating and living. We meet every Wednesday, 11-2 pm near Campbell Hall.

Global Environmental Brigades

A student-led organization that focuses on reforestation, sustainable agriculture, waste management, and education by empowering members of rural communities in east Panama.

Global Water Brigades

A student-led organization that assists in designing and implementing water systems to prevent water related illnesses in communities with limited access to clean water.

Greeks Gone Green

Greeks Gone Green is an organization consisted of Greeks and Gauchos dedicated to promote sustainability within the Greek community. The GGG campaign focuses on four areas of sustainability: recycling, energy efficiency, green purchasing, and composting.

Isla Vista Community Relations Commission

IVCRC is an Associated Students committee that works to promote and educate the Isla Vista community by nurturing the relationships between the long-term and short-term residents. In addition, IVCRC funds on-campus and off-campus groups that work to improve the community.

Greenhouse and Garden Project

The Greenhouse and Garden Project is an enjoyable and educational organization at UCSB that welcomes students, faculty, and staff to maintain their own plot to garden on.

Isla Vista Food Co-op

As the only consumer cooperative in the county, our purpose as a community-owned business is to be a trusted source of natural and organic products and a reliable resource for consumer information–driven not by profit, but by a motivation for community autonomy, mutual aid, and environmental justice.

Isla Vista Surfrider Foundation

An organization dedicated to protecting our oceans and beaches through education and activism.

The UCSB Living Lab program highlights research that is related to or has implications towards sustainability or environmental issues through our blog, news articles, twitter, and the web. We also encourage UCSB faculty and researchers to share their expertise and engage with each other and the local community.

Natural History Collections Club

This organization provides members of the UCSB community with the opportunity to explore the world of natural history collections which are preserved for scientific and conservation purposes, as well as to engage the community in learning more about the importance of these collections as valuable historical records.

Plastic Solutions

Plastic Solutions at UC Santa Barbara is a student led organization which seeks to reduce, and eventually eliminate, the use of single-use plastics in the UCSB community through education, policy initiatives, and the promotion of sustainable alternatives.

PowerSave Green Campus Grogram

PowerSave Campus is a network of student interns that work to promote energy efficiency in and around college campuses.

Renewable Energy Initiative

The REI GB was formed in September 2010 as a consultative and decision making student-majority governance board with fiduciary responsibility for the total proceeds from the Renewal Energy Initiative student fee that was passed in spring 2010 and went into effect fall 2010.

Santa Barbara Student Housing Co-op

The purpose of the Santa Barbara Student Housing Co-op (SBSHC) is to provide low rent co-op housing for student, staff, and faculty of the University of California at Santa Barbara, regardless of gender, race, social, political, or religious affiliation, and thereby influencing the community to eliminate prejudice and discrimination in the community. We strive to engage in continuous educational programs that further the principles of cooperation through mutual, self-help living at a minimal cost.

Save the Mermaids

The Mermaids act as ambassadors for the sea by educating our community about human-sourced ocean pollution and advocating for behaviors that benefit the ocean environment. Our goal is to educate the public in a fun and creative way on how our actions affect the ocean environment as well as teaching lifestyle habits to prevent further harm and benefit the health of the sea.

SCUBA Club at UCSB

The organization’s purpose is to create a social network and encourage safe and responsible diving practices. We also host monthly guest speakers highlighting different aspects of ocean related careers.

Sustainable Services Learning Initiative – Partners in Environment

A group of students promoting sustainability focused service learning efforts. Our largest current project is the launching of a joint volunteer management program which will connect groups on and off campus.

System Change Not Climate Change – Santa Barbara

System Change Not Climate Change (SCNCC) is an organization that discusses anti-capitalist perspectives to climate change, as we believe that both ecological destruction and economic inequality are intricately linked to the profit-motive under capitalism. We offer a space to converse and network with other students, faculty, and community members who share a view that capitalism is the driving force behind climate change.

The Green Initiative Fund (TGIF)

The Green Initiative Fund (TGIF) was the first green fee in the UC system. It was created by students in the spring of 2006 with a charge to reduce the University’s impact on the environment.

The Wildlife Society is dedicated to the responsible conservation of wildlife through learning, teaching, and community outreach.

USGBC Students recruits, connects, and equips the next generation of green building leaders by empowering them to transform their campuses, communities, and careers.

My wife and I got the 5-Day / 4-Night Branson deal with show tickets and attended the presentation. Pretty slick but websites were already open and wouldn't show anything not already pulled up. Starting price was just under $20k, quickly offered the $6900 option followed by the $3300 deal. We said no and weren't overly pressured like others said they were. Well after being home for a week, I get the text to call and activate my $100 hotel savings card. Then came the survey questions on how well they did and low and behold, the Platinum package ($6,500 price) is waived for us if we pay the $69 quarterly fee up front for 2 years. So, for $520 we get what we would have paid $6900 at the presentation and a $99 quarterly fee. After finding this site and reading real stories of those who bought their service, I'm glad to said thanks, but no thanks!!

Total SCAM - we bought into this because we travel a lot anyway. We were told that we could match or do better than other sources for Airlines, Cruises, Hotel, Rental Cars, and Condos. The problem is we attempted more than once to book airfare by calling the customer service number and the tickets prices are higher than the airline websites. The Condos and Hotels are never available and we have not even seen rental cars. We have NEVER used our high cost Travel program for 2 years now and are tempted to stop paying the monthly fees. The problem is we paid so much up front - either way we end up throwing away money!!!

Join me in getting these people exposed! I've alerted the media and they are interested in doing an expose'. My e-mail is [email protected]. STAY AWAY!!! this is a scam! I bought a membership after the charismatic salesman gave a flashy presentation and what you see is NOT what you get. Customer service sucks and once you sign that contract they own you! prices are no cheaper than what you get on air BNB. I hope this review saves at least one person from falling victim to this circus sideshow. American Greed should do a show on this place.

My husband and I answered minimal questions, kept saying no to each person who pushed harder and harder. Don't give in. After the fourth person that spoke to us we firmly said we were not interested. She threw her pen down, got angry but we got our free shows and cash! We happily walked away,

Not what it seems. Most places are tired, sad condos. Not worth it! Don't get sucked in!

Well that turned out to be the most expensive show tickets! Got roped into a presentation of the travel club. Went to the presentation. Very friendly people. Sucker into a 12,000 travel club that sounded too good to be true and it was. After reading reviews we went back to cancel our membership and we're pressured into a 2 year $1600 trial which we regret. Seems that most of the condos that are advertised for great deals are tired old timeshares that are not very appealing. The car rental is a joke. You can find cheaper rates yourself and hotels are no deal either. Don't fall for it! It's definitely not worth it.

Would give 0, how rude, worst than time share sales. Talk about high pressure, they basically tell you that you are stupid if you don't buy!

Cant afford their deal of 19k plus, just keep telling them no, they will keep dropping the price just to make a deal; then tell you not to tell others. Not customer friendly at all. If you go to Branson, MO, stay away from these people. The shows are fantastic but not at what they charge. We got scammed bad.

My wife and I went to a required presentation on October 17, 2023 as we had already received discounted tickets to a show. We had no plans to buy anything but just sit through the sales pitches. Which we did. However, I would like to enlighten people as to what happened. 1.) When we entered the building we were quickly met by a salesperson who got me a cup of coffee. He knew we were hostile to buying but that didn't surprise him. Everybody is. 2,) We were taken into the main presentation room. There we met the presenter who said he had done this job for twenty-two years. He gave a poliished pitch with excellent slides, videos, and examples beginning with the statement that he was not selling timeshares. In fact they help people out of them. 3.) Next we were sent into separate offices (car salemen anyone!) 4.) The original salesman offered us discounts from the $19,995 price. We were as likely to purchase colon exams as his product. We said no. 4.)He left and another woman came in. She asked if we had been to such a presentation before. We had and said so. Then she signed the release and we left to take it to the half price ticket store. GAME OVER!

It's a ripoff. Don't let them sucker you into "great savings" they show on a saved (not live) website only to find out you can use an AARP discount or sometimes just book online for the same savings.

Love working with these guys, I don't have much time to plan on my own so this helped me greatly.

We have over 50 different sheduled trips on weekends and public holidays and we also offer midweek trips on request to the Hanging Bridges of Chulilla, the Roman Aqueduct of Peña Cortada, the Thermal waters of Montenejos and the caves of Bocairent

We believe small groups are more personal, we can have coffee before and a drink after the walk. In addition small groups cause less enviromental damage than large bus trips, particularly when visiting areas of natural beauty.

Un tourism | bringing the world closer.

Unwto 2021: a year in review, 2021: tourism united, resilient and determined.

2021 has been a year of learning and adapting for tourism. It has proven that only by working together can the sector overcome challenges and embrace opportunities.

Gathering the global tourism community and developing concrete actions, UNWTO has led tourism’s response with the vision of not only restarting, but doing so in a more inclusive, innovative and sustainable way.

January - March

As global tourism faced up to a second year of unprecedented crisis , UNWTO began 2021 by counting the cost so far . At the same time, however, the emergence of vaccines brought hope . The Global Tourism Crisis Committee met to explore what this meant for safe travel and the restart of tourism, while the announcement of the winners of the UNWTO Global Start-up Competition recognized the role culture and creativity will play in tourism’s restart and recovery .  

April - June

Collaboration and innovation were the focusat the start of the second quarter. UNWTO partnered with IATA on a new Destination Tracker to give both tourists and destinations clear, impartial and trusted advice. And a new Start-up Competition was launched to find the best ideas for accelerating rural development through tourism. In May, the launch of the Best Tourism Villages by UNWTO generated significant interest from Members in every global region. 

July - September

As destinations in Europe welcomed tourists back for the peak summer season, UNWTO highlighted the role of  digital solutions for the safe restart of the sector. But UNWTO also looked ahead, to a more sustainable future , working with key partners to  reduce plastic waste and consumption across every part of the sector. Together, we celebrated World Tourism Day around the theme of Tourism for Inclusive Growth, a message of solidarity and determination that was echoed on a global scale.

October - December

The final quarter of 2021 began with cautious optimism as UNWTO’s Barometer showed signs of improvement in tourist arrival numbers during the summer season in the northern hemisphere. A new partnership with Netflix will bring the message of tourism as a driver of opportunity to a massive global audience, while in November, UNWTO was tourism’s voice at COP26 and signatories to the landmark Glasgow Declaration keep growing. Finally, against the backdrop of the UNWTO General Assembly , the programme of work for the coming biennium was approved and 77% of Members voted to secure a second mandate for the Secretary-General from 2022-2025.

Growing and Moving Forward

UNWTO brings together political leaders from across the globe to deliver a strong, coordinated response. Governments, destinations, fellow UN agencies and international organizations met at key international events joining efforts to rethink tourism. Institutional coordination has proven crucial to find the solutions that build a smarter, greener and safer tourism.

Leaving Nobody Behind

The pledge to ‘ leave nobody behind ’ means nobody should miss out : Not now as we support the sector in the face of crisis, and not in the future as tourism starts again. Tourism is a proven driver of equality and opportunity. And that’s why we turn words into actions, delivering guidelines and action plans , to ensure everyone can enjoy the opportunities tourism brings.

A Shared Vision

Advancing the transformation of the tourism sector , partnerships are the only way forward. In 2021, UNWTO signed agreements with international organizations and the private sector to step our vision for the future of tourism: innovation , education , sustainability , green investment , rural development.

UNWTO updates World Tourism Barometer and reports international tourism back to 60% of pre-pandemic levels from January to July 2022

Below are excerpts from the September 2022 release of the UNWTO Tourism Barometer :

• The steady recovery reflects strong pent-up demand for international travel, especially in the months of June and July which are part of the Northern Hemisphere summer season. The easing or lifting of travel restrictions in an increasing number of countries also contributed to boost results.
• International tourist arrivals almost tripled (+172%) in January-July 2022 compared to the same period of 2021. Numbers climbed from -64% in January 2022 (versus 2019) to -28% in July, the strongest month since the start of the pandemic.
• Asia and the Pacific (+165%) saw arrivals more than double in the first seven months of 2022, though they remained 86% below 2019 levels.
• The ongoing recovery can also be seen in outbound tourism spending from major source markets. Expenditure from France was at -12% in January-July 2022 compared to 2019 while spending from Germany stood at -14%. International tourism spending remained at -10% in Belgium, -23% in Italy and -26% in the United States.
• The uncertain economic environment seems to have reversed prospects for a return to pre-pandemic levels in the near term. 61% of UNWTO Panel of Experts now see a potential return of international arrivals to 2019 levels in 2024 or later while those indicating a return to pre-pandemic levels in 2023 has diminished (27%) compared to the May survey (48%).

The situation for tourism remains rather unusual as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The crisis has marked a significant change for everyone, and above all for tourism, one of sectors hit hardest by the virus. 2020 was the year in which international tourism came to a near-complete standstill, and the only alternatives were domestic and local tourism.

2021 has seen some improvements, but only in a very subtle way as restrictions are still in place and many countries keep their borders fully or partially closed.

It is difficult to make an estimate for 2022 as it is not known how the pandemic will evolve. However, it is possible to talk about the new tourism trends that are likely to emerge over the coming year: – International travel with restrictions still maintained by both destinations and airlines in order to offer 100% security to the consumer.

– Reinforcement of COVID-19 testing; two years after the pandemic, COVID testing will still be in place as a preventive measure. – Conscious travel will be advocated. Travel to more distant destinations, but with prolonged durations of stay, as consumers look to enjoy as much of each place they visit as possible. – Green travel. Climate change is a problem that is present and growing. Consumers now are much more responsible and aware of the reality they live in on daily basis.

– A new trend is the “ed-ventures”. It is about combining education and holidays for the youngest members of the family. While adults may need to telework or attend meetings, their children can be doing workshops and learning in a playful way.
