Photo from the Celtic Trails (Ireland) ride.

For many years wild horses roamed through most of Europe’s ecosystems, in high mountains, deep forests, steppes and savannahs. Sadly the last European wild horse died in around 1909. Though this original wild horse is extinct there are still millions of horses around in Europe, and some horse breeds to this day carry most of the gene material of the original wild horse. Today we cannot offer you a ride on a wild horse, but we can send you to ride on one of the many different breeds of horses we have in Europe.

European horses, particularly the Lusitano in Portugal and the Andalusian in Spain, are world famous for their athleticism and beauty - we can offer expert tuition from top class dressage instructors on these fabulous horses. The Irish Hunter will give you confidence jumping whilst the iconic Icelandic horse will carry you safely around volcanos, hot springs and fjords.

However, Eastern Europe now has some exciting riding in countries such as Albania, Slovenia, Croatia and Bosnia where the tough local horses will carry you safely over outstanding and unspoilt countryside. The flower laden Kupres Plateau in Bosnia, Bulgaria and Romania also have some wonderful mountain horseback trails where the scenery is spectacular. If you wish for a more cultural experience then there are horseback trails in France where you are able to visit castles and chateaux, walled towns and cathedrals. Horseback rides in Italy, Sicily and Sardinia can offer history, culture, romance and the most delicious food and wine. Riding in Capadoccia in Turkey is just a breathtaking experience for the astonishing rock-hewn landscapes.

Relaxed western riding though Italy and Hungary is ideal for the easygoing holidaymaker, as is cantering through the poppies in Mallorca on a well schooled Andalusian, discovering the beauty of Menorca or enjoying the glorious beaches of Lesvos in Greece.

For the adventurous riding holiday enthusiast, we have some really remote trails through the Tusheti mountains of Georgia and Caucasian mountains of Russia where all your belongings are carried by pack horses. There are also incredible trails in Slovenia and Montenegro which allow you to explore more remote locations, and an epic journey across Wales to the coast culminating with a gallop down the beach.

There are so many options in Europe for horse riders, from fabulous beach rides to progressive trails through forests and over mountains, cross country instruction or dressage and jumping lessons, farmhouse stays or remote camping trails where you stay in beautiful locations every night. The scenery is varied and diverse and with the many different breeds of horses, you will be spoilt for choice. From the back of a horse you can experience all that the countries in Europe have to offer.

Horse Riding Holidays in EUROPE

Riding in Europe is generally of a high standard and offers great value for money. Travelling on horseback allows one to appreciate the cultural, historic and natural highlights of Europe while staying off the beaten track and meeting the real people who live on the land. There are many protected natural areas, beautifully preserved and well maintained trails not to mention plentiful guest houses and small hotels to choose from. The regions, even within a country, are quite distinct and vary greatly in a small geographical area meaning you can go back again and again and feel like you are still exploring. The opportunity for a city break before or after a ride is very tempting with many of the access cities being destinations in their own right.

Many countries have strong equestrian traditions e.g. Denmark and Finland and very distinctive breeds such as the Icelandic horse in Iceland, the Andalusian of Spain, the Lusitano of Portugal, Irish hunters in Ireland and many more. What better way to discover the country and its roots than from the back of a horse completely adapted to the country.

HORSE RIDING HOLIDAYS in   ICELAND The horses in Iceland make the riding so special. Add-ons Unicorn is always delighted to arrange extensions to your horse riding holiday in  Iceland and we suggest whale watching tours and trips out onto the ice-fields, bird watching or a few days to explore Reykjavik.  Iceland is a beautiful location to go white water rafting. Give us a call to arrange any of these.

In Crete we offer the excellent  Lasiithi Trail.  Ride, guided or unguided for those with more experience, from coast to coast over mountains. Instruction for the less experienced is available and in the hotter time of the year, shorter hours in the saddle on the  Sun and Riding  programme allows time for relaxing on the beach. This is a different world and Cappadocia is one of the most spectacular regions of  Turkey with a history stretching back 3000 years.  Thousands of years of wind and rain erosion on a landscape of soft volcanic stone topped with hardened larva caps has created a fascinating landscape of rock cones and pinnacles that are known as ‘fairy chimneys’. Equestrian Tourism - July 2017

Equestrian Tourism encourages relationships, exchanges between riders and the populations that they meet along the way as well as the discovery of local cultural heritage.

Equestrian tourism is one of the best ways to develop horse-riding by making it more accessible to a wider range of people.

Its values, focused on nature, human relationships, and a different way of using horses, appeal to many. It offers rural areas a way to regenerate, diversify their activities, and open up to new perspectives. Requiring appropriate infrastructures for travelling, it contributes to protect the environment and to preserve and maintain natural leisure areas.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
