September was crazy busy in the best possible way.

We jumped from coast to coast starting with our first ever Disney Cruise! We were invited guests on the ship and I can’t thank Disney enough for hosting us.

When we first shared we were going on a Disney Cruise Lines sailing, everyone told me that Disney cruises are like potato chips… you can never stop with just one. About 10 minutes into our cruise I knew exactly what they meant. It was amazing and we are already looking forward to our next one. I don’t have it planned… yet… but I am seriously looking at Alaska and sailings out of Florida. Really, I would be thrilled with any of them. The service, entertainment, food, ship and all the family fun onboard made for an amazing time for everyone!

Our video from day one shows just how much fun we were able to pack into one day, and I’m sharing some other highlights below. For our first Disney Cruise, I still can’t get over how perfect this cruise was. It was themed for Halloween and a two-night getaway, which gives you just enough of a taste for the magic onboard that you want to book another one right away.

The fun starts right when you board.

You are given a boarding number which makes the whole process so smooth. When you step foot onto the ship your entrance is announced to the whole ship and you are personally welcomed on board. What a way to start a vacation!

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

The first thing on our list was to take a tour of the ship, starting with the top deck.

There was food already being served so we also had our first meal at Cabanas where they were serving a delicious buffet. Emmy was thrilled that her favorite mac n’ cheese was on the ship. Whenever we are at a Disney property it is her go-to meal.

The kid’s clubs on board were having an open house so we all went to Disney’s Oceaneer Club for Emmy to see and play. She loved it and was so excited to spend more time there during our cruise.

Soon our cabin was ready and we headed down to deck 8 to check it out. We were in love. The cabins are beautiful with wood and ocean blue accents.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

It was quite spacious too.

Our favorite feature was that the toilet and shower are in separate areas that each have a sink. This was a big deal for us. We normally never travel in just one room, because with 4 girls and poor Pete, it can take hours for us to all get ready in the morning. This was a great solution for that and gave us more vacation time during our vacation.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

We also had a fantastic veranda to relax on.

Verandas are my favorite parts of cruise cabins. I know some people don’t use theirs much, but we do. From morning coffee to evening snacks, we love having a veranda to relax on.

Ash and Em went and watched a movie in the theater… they ended up seeing 5 of them on our trip. There is just something about having practically around the clock Disney movies being played in beautiful theaters to really help kids enjoy their time on the ship.

After that, we all met for dinner. Disney does the coolest thing ever. Your wait staff from the dining room is with you throughout the entire cruise, yet each night you move to a different dining room. This is a huge benefit that you can’t even start to appreciate until you experience it. For us, it meant not having to explain our dietary restrictions to a new person each night. It meant having your drinks waiting for you before you even sit down. At the table next to us, the parents were outnumbered like we are, but their kids were a lot younger.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

On the second night, the kid’s food was already served in the way that the kids liked to enjoy it and the waiter and assistant waiter cut the food for the kids so that the parents didn’t have to spend their whole meal helping the kids. It was little things like this that happened all throughout the cruise that really elevate the experience. I had read about this general feel before on a Disney Cruise, but then once you experience it, it clicks just how far everyone goes to make sure everything is perfect!

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

The dress code was cruise casual, Halloween or Pirate! Ha! Emmy combined them all with her Minnie Mouse dress and pirate bandana hair topper.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

Yes, Mickey came with us almost everywhere!

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

The food was amazing!

This was a vegan bean cake dish that was so flavorful. As a vegan, I expected and would have been happy with steamed veggies, but to get a dish like this was such a pleasant surprise!

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

At the end of our meal, the walls changed from black and white to color! I’m not going to say anything more about Animator’s Palate because it is more fun to experience it without knowing.

I will say that the dining experiences are just that, experiences. They are very much themed and are very reminiscent of what you would expect at a Disney Resort, but just a tad more formal. Still totally family-friendly, but maybe a little more special?

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

After dinner, we strolled along the ship and watched the sunset.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

Well a few of us did. Em was in relaxation mode!

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

We were really excited to see our cabin transform from day to night and it was everything we could have imagined! There is a curtain that you can draw between the kid area and the parent area and that made it feel even more spacious. With TV’s in both areas the kids had on Disney kids movies and Pete and I watched other Disney movies. It was so much fun having that available all the time too!

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

That night was the famous Fireworks At Sea during the Pirates in the Caribbean party on the deck!

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

During the first day, there was also crafts for families to do, exemplary stage shows, trivia for adults, snacks galore and so much more. I went into this first day thinking we could do everything even if we didn’t sleep. I really told the rest of my family that this was going to happen. That night I accepted the fact that there was absolutely no way to do even 25% of the fun that is available. I don’t even think that if we were on a 2-week cruise we would be able to do it all, and that is okay. It just means we need to take more Disney Cruises, right?

Part two is coming soon!

Have you been on a Disney Cruise?

That looks amazing! We are Disney Vacation Club members but haven’t done one of their cruises yet! Our 3 girls are 5, 8, and 10 and I want to go soon! We just got back from the Oasis by Royal Caribbean and LOVED it but I think the kids would adore this.

I went on Disney's Halloween-themed cruise. Here are 5 things that surprised me about the fun but underwhelming experience.

My family went on a halloween on the high seas disney cruise and had a pretty good time. jill robbins.

  • Disney's themed Halloween on the High Seas cruises take place on select sailings in the fall.
  • I expected prominent Halloween decor and atmosphere but the theming was very light.
  • We didn't get our itinerary of Halloween activities ahead of time, which made planning difficult.

Insider Today

Disney Cruise Line's Halloween on the High Seas cruises are themed voyages that take place on select sailings in September and October.

The fleet-wide celebrations include themed decor, events, and activities. Recently, I went on one of these voyages with my husband and two 12-year-old kids.

Although we had a great time, there were also some surprises.

First off, we didn't know our cruise would be Halloween-themed when we booked it

If you don't see the halloween on the high seas artwork, don't assume you're booking a halloween-themed cruise. jill robbins.

We booked our cruise about a year out and it wasn't labeled as being Halloween on the High Seas at that time.

We received an email two months before sailing letting us know we'd be celebrating Halloween at sea. We were also encouraged to bring costumes.

That said, I don't think our cruise not originally being listed as a Halloween one is the norm. These cruises are typically easy to spot on Disney Cruise Line's website . Disney Cruise Line's website currently has several of next fall's cruises marked as Halloween on the High Seas.

Related stories

There were near-constant changes in the cruise industry when we booked our trip in 2021, so that might be why our listing changed later on.

I expected prominent, in-your-face Halloween decor and atmosphere, but the theming was very light

If you've been to Disneyland or Walt Disney World during the Halloween season, you know that the parks really go all out . I expected the same level of immersion on the Halloween on the High Seas cruise but that wasn't the case.

Fortunately, if you're not into Halloween you don't need to worry about being overwhelmed by the decor and theme. The pumpkin tree in the atrium was the most prominent Halloween decoration on the ship and it was very well done.

The pumpkin tree had lights in it. Jill Robbins

Other decorations included jack-o'-lantern clings in the portholes and spiderwebs on the lobby bar. There was Halloween music playing softly in the hallways and elevators throughout the cruise.

The port holes had fun faces stuck onto them. Jill Robbins

The buffets had Halloween-inspired signs, whether the food was actually themed or not. Most of it wasn't.

There were a few Halloween-themed labels with food. Jill Robbins

The only Halloween-themed treats I noticed were in the Concierge Lounge.

A few Halloween-themed treats were available, but not many. Jill Robbins

I'm very neutral on Halloween and can take it or leave it. Although I was surprised by the subtle amount of decor and atmosphere, it didn't disappoint me.

We didn't get the Halloween schedule of events until we were on board, which made planning a bit challenging

All of the Halloween events were listed in Disney Cruise Line's Navigator app, which can't be fully accessed until you board the ship.

One night out of our five-night cruise was designated as Halloween, which is when most of the themed activities would take place. Since we didn't know that ahead of time — all we were told was Halloween would be celebrated and we should bring costumes — we'd already had something special booked .

Unfortunately, the night designated as Halloween conflicted with a reservation we'd made for specialty dining at Remy, one of Disney Cruise Line's signature restaurants.

The booking was important to us so we decided to skip the Halloween festivities and stick to our plans.

Some people left candy out on their doors. Jill Robbins

Other themed activities included costume contests, mini parties in the kids' clubs, Mickey's Mouse-querade party, and a Halloween-themed deck party.

At one point we also tried to get our 12-year-olds to go trick-or-treating with us, but they opted to stay in the tween club, Edge, and play games. We were all happy with our decisions but I'd have appreciated knowing that there was a big event on board to consider when making pre-sail reservations .

The 'Sanderson' sisters and 'Hocus Pocus' movies stole the show

There was a showing of "Hocus Pocus" in the ship's main theater on "Halloween." Later that evening, Minnie Mouse, Daisy Duck, and Clarabelle Cow dressed as the Sanderson Sisters made their first appearance.

The line to meet them was wrapped around the atrium. I spoke to someone in the line and she shared she'd been waiting for over an hour — I estimated most people waited about 90 minutes.

People went wild over the extra-Disneyfied Sanderson sisters. Jill Robbins

I saw three other time slots to meet and get pictures with these characters dressed as the Sanderson Sisters. "Hocus Pocus 2," which was released to Disney+ while we were on board, was shown several times during our sailing.

You really could participate as much or as little as you like

Costumes were not required for any of the festivities. I estimate that about half the passengers were in costume on the ship's Halloween.

We saw lots of Halloween-themed stateroom door decorations and a lot of Disney Halloween shirts.

There was a small selection of Halloween on the High Seas merchandise for sale in the gift shop for anyone inspired to add a little Disney Halloween flair to their look.

Our family's Halloween on the High Seas cruise ended up being a fun surprise. Jill Robbins

I didn't have a costume or any Halloween-themed clothes or accessories but didn't feel out of place. Parents of younger kids will also be happy to know that nothing on board was overtly scary.

Overall, the attempted Halloween theme didn't do much for me

Disney is still my favorite cruise line  but the Halloween experience didn't do a lot for me. Fortunately, I hadn't booked this for the theme.

It was honestly easy for me to ignore the fact that this was a Halloween-themed cruise — it seemed like a regular one with a few Halloween decorations and activities thrown in.

I can easily see where someone super excited about a Halloween cruise might have seen this experience as a letdown. Aside from a cool pumpkin tree and some creative costumes, my experience was the same as it's been on any other Disney cruise —  which is a big thumbs up for me .

I'd take another Halloween on the High Seas cruise if the itinerary was one I wanted to experience but I wouldn't select this cruise solely for its theme.

A Complete Guide on the Disney Halloween Cruise

halloween-on-the-high-seas-minnie-mouse-on-cruise-deck

When sailing on a Disney ship, you are surrounded by the magic of Disney. From themed rooms and restaurants to specialty characters and even fireworks at sea! But something that makes sailing on a Disney ship even more unique is the themed cruises they offer! Guests can enjoy a Halloween on the High Seas , Very Merrytime Cruises, Pixar Day at Sea, Star Wars Day at Sea, and Marvel Day at Sea cruise. My very first Disney cruise was a Disney Halloween cruise  back in 2019! And as a former Cast Member and as someone who loves cheap tickets to Walt Disney World , it was the most magical vacation I’ve ever had. Below are some of my experiences on the Halloween Disney cruise , along with information to help you discover if a Halloween on the High Seas cruise is right for you!

What is Halloween on the High Seas?

  • Halloween on the High Seas is a Disney Cruise Line exclusive Halloween-themed sailing. Setting sail in mid-September through October, this season of extra-special sailings will bring the fun of Halloween to guests on select cruises across the entire DCL fleet. Guests can dress up in their Halloween costumes and join Disney characters in theirs! You can also find dance parties throughout the ships; enjoy a variety of themed food and beverages; and immerse yourself in a ghostly ship takeover with elaborate décor and the magical Pumpkin Tree!

When looking closer at the specially themed cruises, Halloween on the High Seas and Very Merrytime cruises are the only savings that completely change the cruise experience. The other special Days at Sea are just that, Days at Sea. So your entire cruise will not be themed around the day, it will just be one day of the sailing that will be a special theme.

How is a Halloween on the High Seas Cruise Different? – Activities on Board a Disney Halloween Cruise

mickey-and-minnie-in-costumes-for-halloween-on-the-high-seas

The main way the  D isney Halloween cruises are different from non-themed cruises is that the entire ship receives an overhaul to fit with the theme. The only times of the year this happens are on Halloween for Halloween on the High Seas and at Christmas time for the Very Merrytime Cruises . All other sailings throughout the year will have no special theme which allows guests to take in the sheer beauty of the Disney fleet! And when I say complete overhaul for these special cruises, I mean it! Along with pumpkins, bats, and spider decorations, the ships also offer themed activities and specialty characters in Halloween-themed costumes! All of these enhancements are done on every ship that offers the event. Even the Disney Dream Halloween cruise.

What Activities Are on Disney’s Halloween on the High Seas Cruise?

  • Mickey’s Mouse-charade – Shiver in delight during a scare-a-brain with some of your favorite Disney Pals bedecked in their Halloween finest. Do your ghoulish best and join in the fun!
  • Awakening the Pumpkin Tree  – The centerpiece of H alloween on the High Seas Disney cruise . This tree is located in the main atrium and serves as the opening act for the entire Halloween on the High Seas celebration!
  • Spine-Tingling Treats  – Enjoy unique Halloween-themed desserts, beverages and trick-or-treating!
  • Movie Screenings – Watch all of your favorite Disney Halloween movies in the ship’s theaters or on the funnel vision display throughout your cruise. You can also catch world premiers of new Disney Halloween movies if you’re lucky!
  • Friendly Ghost Stories – Guests can enjoy Haunted Stories of the Sea, told beneath the stars by a mysterious sea captain, and The Nightmare Before Christmas Sing and Scream, an interactive movie singalong.
  • Adults-Only Halloween Dance Party – On the same night as the Mouse-masquerade dance party, adults have their dance party in the adult-only section of the ship! Come dressed to impress because you might run into some infamous Disney villains while you dance the night away.

Spooktacular Halloween Decorations Throughout the Ship

The ship is decorated from Bow to the Stern in garlands of autumn leaves, character-inspired pumpkins, and adorable jack-o-lantern stickers on portholes. Each ship gets a full H alloween Disney cruise  makeover with tons of beautiful touches that are sure to put you in the Halloween spirit !

Specialty Character Sightings and Unique Character Costumes

You can catch Micky, Minnie, Goofy, Donald, Daisy, and Pluto, along with Chip & Dale dressed up in their Halloween Best! In recent years Disney Cruise Line has gotten creative with the character costumes garnishing some much-deserved attention. In 2022, it was announced that Minnie, Daisy, and Clarabelle were going to dress in costume as the three Sanderson Sisters from the Disney cult classic, Hocus Pocus. This created so much buzz that the trio was also introduced to land lovers at Disneyland’s Oogie Boogie Bash.

What is the Cost of Halloween at the High Seas vs. a Typical Disney Cruise?

mickey-and-minnie-on-halloween-cruise-with-kids

With all of the extra activities and perks of H alloween on the High Seas itinerary , you’re probably wondering if it’s more expensive than a normal sailing. And while themed cruises can be slightly more expensive in terms of cost, it depends on other factors of your cruise. When it comes to Disney Cruise Line, the factors that determine the price of your cruise are your sale date, ports of call, and occupancy. So it could work out that your  H alloween on the High Seas  sailing could be just as much or a little less than a normal sailing. Not so favorably, spooky season coincides with Hurricane Season. This is typically the time cruises are less booked and you can find a cheaper price.

What Disney Cruise Ships have Halloween on the High Seas?

Almost every ship in the Disney fleet has a H alloween on the High Seas itinerary . The only ship that doesn’t partake in the celebration is the Disney Wonder. This is because, during this time of the year, the ship is setting sail from different ports around Australia.

Packing and Experience Tips & Tricks for a Disney Halloween Cruise

port-hole-pumpkin-window-decoration-for-halloween

Knowing what to pack for a cruise is an essential part of going on one. Not only will you need your typical vacation items, but you’ll also need things like your passport, cash, a waterproof lanyard, and other items specific to a cruise. Now add in going on a H alloween Disney cruise  on top of that, and your list can get pretty long! Now we aren’t saying you need to bring an additional suitcase, but one must have in your suitcase for your  D isney Halloween cruise  is your costume!

Pack your Halloween Costume

Nothing screams Halloween like dressing up in a costume. And that’s no different on the Disney Cruise Line! Guests are encouraged to wear costumes to Halloween events throughout the sailing. If you’re wondering or concerned about a specific costume, you can find the DCL Costume Guide here . If you don’t have room in your bag for two costumes, don’t worry! There will still be a Pirate Night on H alloween on the High Seas  sailings. You can wear your pirate garb for both events!

Decorate your Stateroom Door with Halloween Themed Magnets

It is tradition to decorate your stateroom door for any Disney Cruise. However, with a D isney Halloween cruise , you can find doors decorated even more than normal! I have three words for you, go all out. If you think you’re doing too much, I promise you you’re not. There are even Facebook groups for individual sailings where you can connect with guests on your cruise to discuss door decor! Make sure to use magnets or bring them for your decorations as the stateroom doors are made of metal.

Disney Wonder review: What to expect on the Disney Cruise Line ship with the coolest itineraries

Summer Hull

If you like the idea of cruising with Disney Cruise Line , but you want to go beyond the Bahamas and Mexico to destinations in New Zealand, Australia, Hawaii, Alaska and beyond, then Disney Wonder is likely the best Disney ship for you.

That's especially true if you want a ship with a lot to offer that's a manageable size and doesn't tempt you to spend money around every bend.

Disney Wonder is one of Disney's two smallest ships. It doesn't have amenities like a pay-per-scoop ice cream shop or fancy, adults-only infinity pool like you'll find on Disney Wish . Don't worry, though — Wonder still has all-you-can-eat, included soft serve out on the deck and is absolutely charming in its own right.

Disney Wonder was the second ship in Disney's fleet, first setting sail in 1999, one year after Disney's original ship, Disney Magic .

In many ways, it is Magic's twin; it's the same size (984 feet long) and has the same number of staterooms (875). However, Disney Wonder features certain shows and restaurants unique to the ship and has a litany of unusual sailings that are unparalleled in Disney's line-up.

I've sailed on all but one of Disney's ships (I'll get on Disney Fantasy one day). I have had the pleasure of sailing on Disney Wonder twice: once to Mexico in a concierge-level suite and more recently to Alaska on my favorite cruise yet in a standard ocean-view cabin.

Based on these experiences and my general obsession with Disney Cruise Line, here's what you need to know about Disney Wonder.

Overview of Disney Wonder

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

Disney Wonder can host up to 2,713 passengers spread across its 875 cabins, ranging from windowless inside rooms to multi-bedroom suites. Guests can enjoy 11 decks of fun operated by 950 crew members.

Like all of Disney's ships, Disney Wonder has a classic oceanliner vibe and coloring. Its interior is inspired by art nouveau design from the turn of the last century, unlike Disney Magic's bold art deco aesthetic. Disney Cruise Line uses design, colors and onboard fixtures from the Grand Hall's chandelier (inspired by Ariel's flower) to the carpet to tell a story, set the stage and sometimes even subtly communicate to passengers which way to go.

Disney Wonder is made for families, but it didn't forget about adults along the way. On it, you will find a waterslide; restaurants themed to "The Princess and the Frog," animation and "The Little Mermaid"; four kids clubs dedicated to different age groups (babies and toddlers, kids, tweens and teens); and adults-only spaces including a pool, multiple bars and lounges, and a high-end restaurant. (Incidentally, if you can snag a brunch reservation at that dining venue, I'd say that is the best $50 you can spend on a Disney cruise .)

Two theaters, the Walt Disney Theatre and Buena Vista Theatre, show first-run Disney movies and three Broadway-style productions on each sailing.

Disney is famous for its rotational dining, where your tablemates and servers move from restaurant to restaurant each night. On this ship, you can enjoy your included dinners at Tiana's Place, Tritons and Animator's Palate.

Disney Wonder is a classicly Disney ship that doesn't have the interactive virtual-realty-inspired games or paintings and chandeliers that come to life as you might find on some of the newer ships. But it has the pools, shows, kid clubs, games and itineraries to set the stage for a magical vacation.

What I loved about Disney Wonder

Ports of call.

Disney Wonder's biggest claim to fame is where it sails. While my first sailing on the ship was one born of convenience since it was out of my home port of Galveston, it's since moved on. As Disney Wish joined the fleet in 2022 — and with Disney Treasure to follow in 2024 — Disney Cruise Line got to shake up where it sails. Disney Wonder won the port-of-call lottery, so to speak, when it landed some interesting new sailings.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

I adored our Alaska sailing out of Vancouver , bringing us to glaciers as well as cities such as Ketchikan, Skagway and Juneau. But if spending the day with Mickey and Minnie in their warmest outfits isn't on your bucket list (and it really should be), the ship also sails to places such as the Mexican Riviera, Sydney, New Zealand, Fiji and Pago Pago in American Samoa.

Tiana's Place

One of the best restaurants in all of the Disney Cruise Line fleet is found only on Disney Wonder. Not only does Tiana's Place have great Cajun specialties (beignets, anyone?), but it's a fantastically fun party from appetizer to dessert. You'll only find Tiana's Place on Disney Wonder, so if you'd love to enjoy shrimp and grits with Tiana herself, this is your chance.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

The Disney Cruise Line crew members are always great, but they have the opportunity to be even greater on Disney Wonder. Thanks to a schedule of longer sailings, the crew can get to know the guests on board over the course of a week rather than meeting a new set of passengers every three or four days.

For example, the restaurant servers knew what our kids wanted to drink by the second or third meal. The room hosts learned who our friends were on board and would let us know where our teens were hanging out when they noticed us looking around.

Great entertainment

There's always something fun to do on Disney Wonder, from the game shows to on-deck performances and the three evening Broadway-style shows, including "The Golden Mickeys," "Frozen: A Musical Spectacular" and "Disney Dreams" (which is guaranteed to make your eyes water a bit on your last night).

These aren't just shows that help you pass some hours in the evening; some of them — especially Frozen — are at the level you would pay to see on Broadway. It's also really fun at night to pop into the theater and see a new Disney movie that is still playing on land without worrying about the costs of tickets or pre-reserving good seats.

What I didn't love about Disney Wonder

It's not the latest and greatest.

While Disney Wonder is in great shape and gets upgrades on a regular basis, its bones are 25 years old. Some of the styling — while classic — feels dated compared to Disney's newer ships, like Disney Wish. My family also missed the fun tech-enabled interactive elements they'd enjoyed on the line's newer ships because it gave them something to do between scheduled activities.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

The food is good — but not the best in the fleet

I enjoy the food on all Disney Cruise Line ships, but Disney Wonder is a step or two behind the new Disney Wish when it comes to dining. This is especially true in the grab-and-go department. The on-deck food on Wonder leans heavily into comfort food (pizza, burgers and chicken fingers). Although you can find other options if you look carefully, I missed the variety of Disney Wish with its taco bar and BBQ.

Disney Wonder needs a new bar

Not to overplay the comparison between one of Disney's oldest ships and its newest, but you really see the difference in design from the '90s versus today with the onboard bars. On Wish, they are spread throughout the ship, and you can find bright, airy spots to have a cocktail. On Disney Wonder, the bars are concentrated in one area, and all of them are dark and feel like tucked-away pubs. They could use a modern-day glow-up and more views of the sea.

Disney Wonder cabins and suites

Disney Wonder has multiple room types: windowless inside cabins (starting at 184 square feet), ocean-view cabins (starting at 214 square feet), verandah rooms with private balconies (starting at 268 square feet) and concierge-level suites that go all the way up to 1,000-square-foot, two-bedroom suites that sleep up to seven guests.

We've had a chance to check out a few of those room types.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom

Most recently, we sailed to Alaska in a Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom that slept up to four guests with a queen bed, single convertible sofa and a pull-down upper berth. It's a comfortable room type for a family of three or a younger family of four.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah

This room type is similar to the ocean-view room type, with the difference being the verandah rather than a porthole window. If you will use the private balcony, it can be worth buying up to this room type, as my parents did on our recent Alaska cruise. The cost to go from an ocean-view category to this one can be a few hundred dollars on some sailings or thousands more, as it did on our Alaska sailing.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

This room type, like most on Disney Cruise Line, has a split bathroom design. There's a sink and shower in one small bathroom, and a sink and toilet in another. This arrangement allows more guests to get ready at the same time.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

One-bedroom concierge suite

On a 2020 sailing, I had the chance to stay in a one-bedroom concierge suite, which measured 614 square feet and had a true living room area, along with a bedroom. The layout features a small dining nook, a living area with the double convertible sofa, a true separate bedroom with a queen-size bed and two bathrooms.

This was an indulgent way to sail with my mom, where we could all have our own space. The suite comes with concierge service, which takes things to the next level in terms of perks.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

Those in concierge-level accommodations get access to the Concierge Lounge, found midship on Disney Wonder's Deck 10. You don't need concierge access to have a great time on Disney Wonder, but if you can afford it, it sure is amazing.

When we sailed in a suite, we made the most of the lounge with its small food plates set out throughout the day, the included evening happy hour starting at 5 p.m. daily and the fully stocked fridge to grab bottled water and canned drinks to enjoy around the ship and on excursions.

Disney Wonder restaurants and bars

Disney Cruise Line pioneered what it calls "rotational dining." You get a schedule for your cruise, and you rotate through each of the included onboard restaurants, swapping each night. Your serving crew rotates with you, so you always have the same waiters even in different dining venues.

At all of Disney Wonder's rotational restaurants, you can order as much as you want and sample your way around the menu. Want three appetizers? Go for it. Want two lobster tails? They're yours. Want something like chicken fingers that you don't see on the menu? Just ask, and the waiters will deliver if possible.

If you are a true foodie, you won't be overly impressed by the included food on Disney Wonder, but most cruisers will be excited about something on each menu. We certainly enjoy trying various options — especially the seafood — without worrying about the cost.

Animator's Palate

One of Disney Wonder's three included-in-your-fare rotational dining venues is Animator's Palate, a staple on multiple Disney ships. Tucked away on Deck 4, this restaurant has a few different interactive shows and animation offerings on longer sailings — I won't spoil it. The physical restaurant will also come to life over the course of your meal, starting in black and white and ending up in color.

Don't miss the special guest who shows up at the end of your meal at least one of the nights.

While I'm not a huge fan of this dish, a popular item on the menu is the black truffle pasta purseittes.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

Previously mentioned as one of my favorite parts of the ship, Tiana's Place on Deck 3 is always a good time. On longer sailings, the entertainment in this restaurant will include jazz performers on one night and a full-on, second-line parade around the room with Tiana herself on another.

I'm a big fan of the shrimp and grits — or anything Cajun-themed — and definitely don't miss the beignets for dessert.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

Triton's

Off the main atrium on Deck 3, Triton's is the most formal of the three included restaurants on Disney Wonder.

It's themed loosely on "The Little Mermaid," but not in a way your kids will likely notice. If you are looking for dinner to be an experience and want to know which restaurant to skip, I'd recommend this one. It's more traditional than the other venues in the rotation.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

On-deck food

Whether you want a quick lunch or are in the mood for a more casual dinner, eating out on Deck 9 is a viable option on Disney Wonder. On-deck eateries include:

  • Daisy's De Lites: Salads, sandwiches, fruit and customizable rice bowls (the latter are one of my favorite options on Disney Wonder)
  • Sulley's Sips: For-purchase beverages and smoothies as well as free soft-service ice cream
  • Pinocchio's Pizzeria: Pizza by the slice with various toppings, available for long hours each day
  • Pete's Boiler Bites: Burgers, veggie burgers, chicken fingers, fries, and often-overlooked gyros and hummus

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

Cabanas buffet

If you're looking for a classic cruise ship buffet meal, head to Cabanas. Currently open for breakfast and lunch on Disney Wonder, Cabanas is a traditional self-serve buffet. It's impossible to go hungry when you make a plate here because the venue offers everything from Mickey waffles (keep an eye out for the mornings that they have churro Mickey waffles) to chilled shrimp and crab legs.

No reservations are required; you can walk in any time during open hours. Some dishes change daily, while others are consistent throughout the cruise. My top recommendation is to start at the back of the line, where you'll find most of the seafood, so you don't fill up too much on the carb-loaded treats at the beginning of the line.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

Palo adults-only restaurant

The only place to have brunch or dinner on the ship without the kids is at Palo. The adults-only restaurant is reserved for the 18-and-up crowd.

The dress code here is a bit nicer than in other onboard restaurants. T-shirts, swimwear and sports attire are not permitted. You don't need to go super formal; a dress or a nice shirt with pants or jeans is perfect for dinner.

Unless you have Disney Cruise Line Castaway Club Platinum status or higher, dining at Palo will cost you a bit, but I'd argue it's worth it. In fact, I've said it's the best $50 you can spend at sea .

Brunch at Palo is a set price of $50 for all you care to eat from the menu, served on plates instead of via a buffet. For dinner, you can select the $50 prix fixe menu, with a choice of dishes for each course, or you can order a la carte from options such as baby arugula salad ($7), prosciutto and burrata pizza ($16) and jumbo scallops ($32). No matter what you get, save room for the chocolate souffle ($10) for dessert.

Palo is not part of your rotational dining plan, so you'll need to make advance reservations online or via the Disney Cruise Line app. Booking windows will vary based on your room selection and Castaway Club status, but they will typically open a few months before your sailing.

Bars and lounges

On Disney Wonder, the bars are mainly in the adult area on Deck 3 forward. Though the spaces might be used for general activities during the day, the area transforms each evening into a space just for the over-18 crowd.

The lounges here include:

  • Crown & Fin Pub: British-themed pub with beer on tap, sports games on the TVs and small bites in a little buffet offering in the evening
  • Cadillac Lounge: Decor inspired by late-1950s Hollywood with live piano some nights
  • Azure: Nightclub with a bar where you'll find different evening acts and dancing
  • French Quarter Lounge: New Orleans-themed spot where you'll find beignets (for purchase) and cocktails, along with family-friendly activities during the day.

Pro tip: There are usually happy hours somewhere on the ship each day; check the onboard app for details. If you want to save a few dollars on your glass of wine — and like to be surprised — you can also save by having a sommelier's choice glass of wine at some of the bars; you get a nicer glass of wine for a lower price if you let the bartender choose the vintage.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

Coffee drinkers can find the basic beverage in Cabanas via room service or at the self-service drink station just outside of Cabanas on the top deck. If you prefer something fancier — such as a cold brew, salted caramel coconut latte or espresso — you'll need to pony up a few dollars at the Cove Cafe. Expect to pay around $6 or $7 for coffee drinks — or more if you go for the cocktails on the menu. The muffins and pastries are free of charge.

Pro tip: Get the Coffee Fanatics punch card if you plan to purchase multiple coffee-based drinks on your cruise. With the card, you get your sixth drink free after you purchase five coffee drinks.

Disney Wonder activities

Pools and water play areas.

Disney Wonder has a few different pool areas. The main Goofy's Pool and two adjacent family-friendly whirlpools are on Deck 9 midship. Only guests ages 3 years old and up (and potty-trained) can use this pool.

Aft of Goofy's Pool is the Aqua Lab area. Here, you'll find a small, shallow pool for kids ages 3 and up; a splash pad meant for cruisers under age 3 in swim diapers; and a twisting waterslide made for those 38 inches and taller. This slide is a one-at-a-time slide and does not utilize inner tubes.

Forward of Goofy's Pool is the Quiet Cove Pool and two whirlpools, all for the exclusive use of adults only.

Pools are heated, and the hours vary, so check your Disney Cruise Line app once on board.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

If your young child doesn't meet the age minimum for the older kids clubs, there is a nursery for those ages six months to three years. Unlike with the other kid clubs, reservations are required for the nursery, and you'll need to pay an hourly fee.

The kids clubs are one of the best parts of a Disney cruise. They are so good that most kids want to visit them frequently, which means parents get a chance to be on vacation, too.

The main and largest kids clubs on Disney Wonder are the Oceaneer Club and Lab, open to guests ages 3 to 12 years old (and toilet trained). These two clubs have separate entrances on Deck 5, but they are connected via a "secret" hallway just for the kids who are checked in.

The clubs' schedules offer a mix of activities, games and free play that take place in themed areas, including:

  • Andy's Room, where there's even a Slinky Dog-themed slide
  • Marvel Super Hero Academy
  • Disney Junior
  • Frozen Adventures

These kid clubs are free, and reservations are not required. Check the operating hours in your app once on board, but the clubs are often open until midnight.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

Disney knows that little kids and big kids don't mix, so it also has separate hangouts for tweens and teens. Edge is the tween club for guests ages 11 to 14. Found on Deck 9, the club is themed as an under-the-sea submarine. Tweens can come here to draw, play video games or hang out, but supervising youth counselors also lead group activities, such as scavenger hunts, dance parties, bingo and more.

Unlike the Oceaneer Club, where there is a formal check-in and checkout procedure, the tween club allows kids to come and go. If you don't want to give your 11- or 12-year-old that independence, then the Oceaneer Club and Lab are better suited for them than Edge.

On the flip side, if space is available, you can sign a waiver for your 10-year-old to level up into Edge a year early if you think they are ready. This is most useful when sailing with older friends or family members already in Edge.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

Teens ages 14 to 17 have a space all their own in Vibe. On Disney Wonder, you can find Vibe tucked away in the funnel on Deck 11. Its cool spot gives it an exclusive vibe, befitting its name.

Like in Edge, teens can hang out and play arcade games, video games, draw or chat with the counselors and other teen visitors. If space permits, parents can sign a form to allow their 13-year-old to hang out at Edge one year early.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

Bibbity Bobbity Boutique

If your kid has always wanted to be a princess, Bibbity Bobbity Boutique is an awesome (albeit expensive) Disney Wonder experience. It's a salon for kids where fairy godmothers (aka stylists who work there) will transform them into their favorite princess or prince, Captain Mickey or another whimsical character. The character might depend on the costumes available on your sailing.

Depending on the package you book, your kid will choose an outfit before getting a makeover involving a glitter-infused hairstyle, painted nails and fancy make-up. The fairy godmothers do a great job at making their princesses-in-training feel extremely special.

You need to make advance appointments for Bibbity Bobbity, and prices range from $100 to $200, depending on the package you select. (Fair warning: The $100 package doesn't include the outfit or backpack, so BYO if you go that route.)

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

Activities and shows

From the Sail Away party on deck the first afternoon to the See Ya Real Soon final farewell in the main atrium on the last night, there will be more shows and activities to see and experience on Disney Wonder than you'd ever be able to do in just one trip. (But seriously, don't miss the first and last shows; they are fantastic.)

In your Disney Cruise Line app, you'll find the time for all these shows and activities, such as trivia, bingo and karaoke. All the shows and most activities are free, but there are a few exceptions, such as bingo, that cost if you want to play. While it might feel weird at first doing a family game show or playing trivia, the more activities you participate in, the more fun you have.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

On-deck fun

For independent fun, head up to the Wide World of Sports area on Deck 10 forward. There, you'll find a netted area for basketball, ping pong and foosball. Down on Deck 4, the promenade features a walking or running track that goes all the way around the ship. You'll find shuffleboard courts there, as well.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

Character encounters

Sailing with Disney isn't complete without meeting some of your favorite pals on the ship.

Guests have a few ways to visit characters on Disney Wonder. Scheduled character meet-and-greets are listed on the itinerary each day in the Disney Cruise Line app. These will be popular events.

For example, if you are on Disney Wonder as it sails to Alaska , the first day that Mickey, Minnie and friends appear in their Alaska-exclusive outfits out on deck (which is also likely the day you sail close to a glacier), lines will form at least 30 minutes before the greetings start.

However, some of the best character interactions will be the ones that aren't announced or planned. You may see a character on the promenade waving goodbye to land as you sail away from a port or "sleep-walking" in their pajamas at night when no one else is around.

Definitely go to some of the scheduled character interactions if you want to get a photo, but keep your eyes peeled for those unannounced moments, too.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

Senses Spa and Rainforest Room

On Deck 9 forward, you'll find the Senses Spa — home to treatment rooms, a nail and hair salon, a fitness center, locker rooms and the Rainforest Room thermal suite.

You can book spa treatments before the sailing and once on board. Look for discounts on booking treatments on port days, and if you book multiple treatments, you can often also qualify for a discount.

The adults-only Rainforest Room features heated stone chairs, various shower experiences and steam rooms. Access to this room costs extra, so visit the spa on the day you board for prices and availability. If you've been to the Rainforest Room on Disney Wish , Dream or Fantasy, know Disney Wonder's version is smaller. It does not include any whirlpools or some of the other offerings you'll find in the larger thermal suites.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

Disney Wonder nighttime shows and movies

Each Disney ship has a lineup of Broadway-caliber nighttime shows and a schedule of movies in the Walt Disney and Buena Vista theaters.

Currently, the flagship evening performances on Disney Wonder sailings are:

  • "The Golden Mickeys"
  • "Frozen: A Musical Spectacular"
  • "Disney Dreams — An Enchanted Classic"

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

Seating is first-come, first-served, so get to the theater early for your pick of seats. Your time to see the evening show will be opposite your dinner time, so early dinner means seeing the late show, and late dinner means seeing the early performance.

In addition to the Broadway-style shows, Disney Wonder has a schedule of first-run and recent Disney movies that you can pop in and watch inside the Buena Vista Theater on Deck 5. If you are on the ship while a Disney show premiers on land, you can catch its opening night on the ship, too.

Disney Wonder itineraries and pricing

As we've mentioned before, Disney Wonder hit the lottery of itineraries.

While every year is a bit different, for at least the next year or two, Disney Wonder's schedule includes summer sailings from Vancouver to Alaska, an October trip to Hawaii after the Alaska season, then fall and winter sailings to, from and around Australia and New Zealand. There's a spring stop in Hawaii, followed by sailings from San Diego to Mexico before it resumes its summer season beginning in May in Vancouver.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

Pricing starts less than $2,000 for a family of four on some of the short Australia and New Zealand sailings. Sailings on the U.S. West Coast start around $3,000 for a family of four in an inside cabin.

To do a weeklong Alaska sailing with a family of four, prices will start at $5,100 for an inside cabin in the early or late season. Prime summer sailing dates from June to August cost a couple of thousand dollars more for that same interior cabin and thousands more still for a balcony cabin.

What to know before you go

Required documents.

The required documents for sailing on Disney Wonder vary based on your itinerary.

All guests 16 and over who are U.S. citizens on the sailing from Vancouver to Alaska will need a U.S. passport, but children ages 15 and under can do that sailing with a state-issued birth certificate. Americans flying to Canada from the U.S. (or vice versa) will need a passport to enter the country by air, regardless of age.

U.S. citizens on round-trip sailings from the U.S. West Coast to Mexico can do the sailing with a passport or a state-issued birth certificate and a physical government-issued photo ID.

Those on the sailings to and from Australia and New Zealand will need different documents based on their nationality, but those from the U.S. will need passports and potentially visas, too.

Green-card holders and non-U.S. citizens must check requirements based on destinations visited. Additionally, you will need to check in for your cruise online, fill out the appropriate information and select an arrival time for your embarkation day.

Disney Cruise Line recommends $14.50 in gratuities per guest per night; this is the amount auto-applied to your onboard bill unless you request to increase or decrease it. The gratuities are split among your dining room server, assistant server, head server and cabin host.

Those in the concierge level are charged $15.50 per person per night, with the additional going to the cabin assistant host, who helps with those accommodations. Tips for the concierge lounge team are neither included in that amount nor automatically added to your onboard statement. Disney recommends you tip $8 per person per night; you can do this in cash or ask to have it added to your folio toward the end of your cruise. The tips would then be shared among the concierge hosts.

I recommend bringing cash and tipping not only the concierge hosts but also the bartenders in the concierge lounge, assuming you get your drinks there.

For a seven-night sailing for a family of four, automatically charged gratuities come to $406 in a non-concierge cabin and $434 in a concierge cabin, plus an additional $224 in recommended tips to the concierge lounge attendants. In other words, don't forget to budget for this. You can also leave additional amounts charged to your room or in cash.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

Also not included in the amounts above are tips at the bar, at the adults-only dining restaurants, at the spa and for room service; tipping is recommended for those services. Note that an 18% gratuity is automatically added to bar, beverage, wine, deck service tabs and spa services.

Wi-Fi is not currently a strength of Disney Wonder. It is quite expensive and priced in an old-school manner.

There is no cost to connect to the ship's Wi-Fi network when used only for the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app (which can also be used for messaging other guests on the ship). Otherwise, Disney Wonder's current Wi-Fi options start at $19 for a 100 MB package and go up from there. At some point, the ship will likely switch to the program most other Disney ships use, which charges by the day and not by the amount of data.

Carry-on drinks policy

Guests 21 years and older (18 or under for round-trip Australia and New Zealand cruises) may bring a maximum of two bottles of unopened wine or Champagne (no larger than 750 ml) or six beers (no larger than 12 ounces) on board at the beginning of the voyage and at each port of call. These beverages must be packed in carry-on (not checked) bags or luggage. You can keep drinks chilled in the small fridge in your cabin.

Guests wishing to consume wine or Champagne brought on board in one of the dining rooms will be charged a corkage fee of $26 per bottle.

Smoking policy

Smoking is permitted only in designated deck areas. It's forbidden in cabins and on cabin balconies, and those who violate this rule will face a $250 cleaning fee.

For an additional fee, Disney ships offer full-service laundry and dry cleaning services that include the pickup and delivery of clean clothes to your cabin.

On Disney Wonder, you'll also find self-service laundry on Decks 2, 6 and 7 midship. You pay for the facilities by using your Key to the World card. These services can get busy during sea days on longer cruises, so plan accordingly.

Electrical outlets

Cabins are equipped with multiple 110-volt outlets, which are standard in the U.S. and Canada.

Small electrical appliances such as electric shavers, curling irons and flat irons with standard North American plugs will function on board; 110-volt items should not exceed 1,500 watts, and 220-volt items should not exceed 2,000 watts. A hair dryer is provided in every cabin, but you may bring your own as long as it meets the guidelines above.

The currency on Disney Wonder, regardless of location, is the U.S. dollar.

On the ship, you don't need cash or a credit card — all incidentals, purchases and services will be charged to your cabin folio. Your Key to the World card serves as your onboard payment method. The only exception is if you want to tip a crew member in cash.

In port, you may wish to carry cash in a local currency or a credit card to buy snacks and souvenirs or to tip your tour guide.

Drinking age

The drinking age on Disney Wonder depends on where the ship is sailing at the time. For sailings to and from the U.S. West Coast and Canada, the drinking age is 21.

However, for round-trip cruises from Auckland or Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, Australia, guests 18 years and older may purchase and consume alcohol. For repositioning cruises between Hawaii and Australia, parents or guardians may sign a "Beverage Consent Form" that allows their 18- to 20-year-old children to consume alcoholic beverages while in the adult's presence.

During the day on Disney Wonder, people dress casually. If it's a sea day in a warm-weather destination, most passengers will wear T-shirts, shorts and bathing suits (with a cover-up to go inside). For Alaska cruises, guests should wear layers and bring jackets, hats and rain gear for cooler or wetter days.

During the evenings, dining attire in the three main restaurants is "cruise casual," meaning no swimwear or tank tops, but you don't need to dress up too much. The exception is if you are dining in Palo, where you do need to dress up a bit more.

Cruises that are seven nights or longer schedule one "formal night." Passengers can choose to wear a fancy dress, suit or sports coat, but it's not a problem if you prefer casual attire. You will see folks in jeans and shorts on formal nights alongside passengers in dresses and suits. For the kids, princess dresses and other Disney-themed costumes are always appropriate.

Pro tip: Be sure and pack that pirate gear or themed attire for Pirate Night or Frozen Night on the Alaska cruises.

Bottom line

Disney Wonder has been the setting for family vacations for about 25 years, and it doesn't show any signs of hanging up its waterslide anytime soon.

It's not the newest, flashiest or most modern ship in Disney's fleet, but it makes us smile every time we step on board. There's more than enough to do to stay busy on your sailing, and it's still a compact enough ship that you don't spend half your cruise figuring out where everything is.

In other words, Disney Wonder is a great choice whether you want to start your cruising with a ship that is a bit smaller or you are ready to chart an adventure to one of Disney's most far-flung ports of call.

Disney Cruise Line’s Halloween on the High Seas 2023 Details

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

Halloween on the High Seas returns to Disney Cruise Line with more sailings than ever before and new one-of-a-kind experiences in September and October 2023. This post shares all of the news, plus quick thoughts from Sarah’s experience during last year’s DCL spook season event.

According to Disney Cruise Line, the 2023 Halloween on the High Seas will bring back more guest-favorite entertainment and activities, including trick-or-treating, spooky parties, elaborate décor and themed food and beverage items. During these limited-time voyages, each ship in the DCL fleet transforms into a ghoulish wonderland.

Halloween on the High Seas voyages will be offered aboard select Disney Cruise Line sailings aboard the Magic, Dream, Fantasy, and Wish ships. Departure dates occur from mid-September through October 2023, with a total of 39 different voyages. The sailings depart from ports in Miami and Port Canaveral, Florida plus San Diego, California and New York City, New York.

Each cruise will take families to fascinating destinations including the Bahamas, Caribbean, California, Bermuda, Canada, and Mexico. All sailings from Port Canaveral and Miami will include a stop at Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island paradise outfitted for family fun and relaxation and brimming with special Disney touches, including the following DCL fan favorites.

First up is Mickey’s Mouse-querade Party. Guests of all ages won’t want to miss this spooktacular event. The atrium in each Disney Cruise Line ship will come alive with ghoulish games, trick-or-treating, and dancing, plus the famous Disney characters in their Halloween costumes.

Next, Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas Sing and Scream. It’s “Season’s Screamings” during this interactive movie experience—with Jack Skellington and Sally greeting guests plus a special interactive Sing and Scream experience featuring the classic film, Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Up on deck, check out the campfire-style Haunted Stories of the Sea, featuring a spooky ghost story or two. Additionally, Halloween-themed movies will be shown on Funnel Vision by the family pool and in staterooms.

Other fun family activities during Halloween on the High Seas include pumpkin-carving, a ghostly takeover of Disney Cruise Line ship announcements, and much more. Guests will also enjoy special Halloween-themed food and beverage items during rotational dining and elsewhere in DCL restaurants.

Finally, proving that Halloween isn’t just for kids , adults will have their fun and (not-so) frightful festivities. Adult-exclusive venues across the fleet will become a ghoulish setting for costume contests and a Villainous Takeover on the dance floor.

Disney Cruise Line hasn’t shared anything new for Halloween on the High Seas 2023, but hopefully it’s as good as the new addition last year: the Sanderson Sisters meet & greet. For those who missed it, this features Minnie is dressed as Winifred Sanderson, Daisy as Sarah Sanderson, and Clarabelle as Mary Sanderson.

Each Disney fur character embodies their respective counterpart from Hocus Pocus , melding their own personalities with the Sanderson Sisters. This meet & greet was fantastic, well worth the often-long wait to meet the Sanderson Sisters!

The Disney Wish, the newest Disney Cruise Line ship, will once again bring its unique twist on a Halloween on the High Seas hallmark. The centerpiece of every ship during Halloween sailings is the signature magical Pumpkin Tree towering over the atrium lobby, each with sprouting Jack-O-Lanterns and flickering lights.

Aboard the Disney Wish, guests will find the Pumpkin Tree in the “Cinderella”-inspired Grand Hall. Featuring lighter bark, graceful branches and a mystical face, this enchanted tree that grew perfect gourds with the help of a Wishing Star at night produced the perfect pumpkin that became the coach that carried Cinderella to the Prince’s Ball.

In terms of commentary, we actually have experience with Halloween on the High Seas. Well, half of us do, at least. Last year, Sarah took a cruise aboard the Disney Wonder with her girlfriends during Halloween on the High Seas.

Sarah absolutely loved Halloween on the High Seas. She thought that the character costumes were adorable and unique, with the Sanderson Sisters being one of many highlights. The overall atmosphere of the ship was spooky thanks to quirky decorations, plenty of pumpkins, and the Halloween tree. Lots of little touches, like unique food and coffee enhanced the atmosphere even further, and gave a Halloween-infused atmosphere to the cruise.

(I’ve been trying to convince Sarah to do a full write-up about Halloween on the High Seas. If this is something you’d like to see, please let us know in the comments!)

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

We’ve previously done one of the Christmas sailings aboard Disney Cruise Line, and it was a bit underwhelming. (See our Very Merrytime Christmas Cruise Review .) Honestly, in reviewing all of Sarah’s photos and hearing what she had to say about Halloween on the High Seas, it sounds to me like Very Merrytime Christmas Cruise is the more ‘robust’ of the two events.

Perhaps it was simply a matter of unrealistic expectations when we did the Very Merrytime Christmas Cruise. We probably don’t have that to as great of a degree when it comes to Halloween. (And honestly, my memories of the Very Merrytime Christmas Cruise have grown fonder over time. Rereading my review today sounds quite harsh as compared to what I remember!)

Ultimately, Halloween on the High Seas sounds like a lot of fun, and we’re glad to see Disney Cruise Line bringing it back for 2023. Several of the itineraries out of San Diego are actually on our “list” of cruises to do/places to visit, but whether we actually follow through on that this year remains to be seen, and is likely a matter of discount availability (or lack thereof).

Taking my kids on their first cruise – Halloween on the High Seas out of Miami on the Disney Magic this September – I’m so excited & the offerings sound super fun! Can’t wait!!

' src=

I’d love to read a review from Sarah. We’ve booked a cruise over Halloween on the Dream from NYC. We like cruises and love Disney, but we aren’t into character meet and greets in the parks so I’m torn about whether the Disney up charge is worth it. Thanks for these great pictures!

' src=

Are you sailing to Bermuda? If so, be prepared for rough seas on return trip Other people I’ve talked to said that’s common. We were all sick

' src=

It’s two sea days to Bermuda and two back (although they could do it in one if they wanted – it all depends on the itinerary) and yes those can be very rough waters. That said I learned to enjoy the rocking and rolling. One of the keys is to go with the motion not fight it and when walking pick one spot ahead of you to focus on. Do not try looking all around you. These are not tips from a cruiser. I was fortunate enough to work on ships in shall we say a rather fun position. There’s more than rough seas that you should know about when it comes to trips to Bermuda. October is considered the worst month to travel there because it’s the rainy month. Sept has the greatest chance of a storm turning into a hurricane while October has a modest risk but these are hurricane months. Actually the best time to visit Bermuda is now. April and May are the ideal months. PS You don’t need to be fearful of Hurricanes as the ships have incredible systems to avoid them but even though they will be far off those will be the truly rough seas when you need to go to your cabin, lie down, close your eyes and enjoy the roller coaster.

Yikes, thanks for the heads up! That doesn’t sound fun at all. We did a cruise (Royal Caribbean) last August from NY to Bermuda and got very lucky with still water

' src=

We have done many Halloween and Christmas cruises with Disney. What I have noticed over the years is especially for Christmas is less decorations and holiday events on the ship the further away from the holiday. We always do the merrytime cruise early December and there was no tree on the island and only decorations in the main lobby of ship. Holiymusic only plaid on one of the days and for only a couple of hours. We asked about caroling and other events and was told you have to book closer to Christmas. In my opinion if you book a Halloween or merrytime cruise it should be consistent throughout the bookings.

Another vote for a Sarah Sets Sail Sea Story. She’s been missing for sometime now. I miss her room review videos where you scale walls and crawl across the ceiling in order to open and close a couch/bed or bathroom shower door.

' src=

We haven’t had any new rooms to record recently! As soon as we’re able to book Boulder Ridge or the new rooms at Caribbean Beach, those videos will return!

Our last cruise on the Magic in 2018 was our granddaughter’s first Disney cruise. She loved it The Halloween Party was epic and the characters in costumes made it extra special. We’re going on the Wish in October and look forward to it after many rescheduled cruises cancelled due to you know what

' src=

My daughter and I are going on the wish for Halloween. She in charge of the fish extenders for the trip. I am so looking forward to all the activities we have planned. We have been watching every you-tube on Disney cruise that we can find.

' src=

Sarah, please do the write up!!!!!

Sorry, thought the other comment didn’t post.

Sarah, do the write up please!!!!

' src=

Definitely interested in a write up of Sarah’s experience! Booked one of the San Diego Halloween cruises as our first DCL cruise this year.

' src=

Us, too! We’d love to hear about this cruise!

' src=

Yup, another vote for Sarah’s DCL reviews!

' src=

“my memories of the Very Merrytime Christmas Cruise have grown fonder over time. Rereading my review today sounds quite harsh as compared to what I remember!” I’m glad to read that. We booked a Very Merrytime Cruise for this coming December despite your less than glowing review. We aren’t “cruise people”, and your not loving it really made me question my decision making. That being said, the pricing was pretty good, and with aging grandparents we thought it would be a good way to do another multi generational trip. Looking forward to giving DCL a shot for the first time.

' src=

Drew, My first cruise ever was the Very Merrytime Christmas Cruise which I took in 2018 with my daughter and mom. I was not sure if I was a “cruise person” but I truly enjoyed it and would do that cruise it again. My daughter enjoyed seeing the characters with winter costumes, singing Christmas carols with other children and meeting Santa Claus. It was a festive atmosphere, service and food were excellent and all in all a very good multi generational trip. I am sure you will have a wonderful trip.

Thank you Marie-France. That’s encouraging!

Updated December 23, 2014

The {{product.model}} offer 9 classes of cabin, from the 184 sq. ft. indoor staterooms to the luxurious Royal Suite, which offers over a thousand square feet of space, a large verandah, and a concierge service.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

The Deluxe Oceanview Queen stateroom has an open layout that is plenty big enough for 3 or 4 people.

{{photo_gallery "Cabin 1 Bedroom Photos"}}

The Deluxe Oceanview Queen stateroom is big enough to sleep 3 or 4, with an option for a queen sized bed or twin beds, plus a single convertible couch and an upper berth pull-down bed.

{{photo_gallery "Cabin 1 Bathroom Photos"}}

The bathroom is small, but has all of the required facilities, including both a tub and a shower.

{{photo_gallery "Cabin 1 Balcony Photos"}}

The verandah balcony is big enough for two people to sit on comfortably, with a small table and two chairs.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

This is one of the largest of the cabins on the ship, with room for up to 7 people and a large living room area.

{{photo_gallery "Cabin 2 Bedroom Photos"}}

There are two bedrooms located alongside the living room, with a queen sized bed in one and twin beds in the other. The living room also offers a convertible sofa that forms an additional bed.

{{photo_gallery "Cabin 2 Bathroom Photos"}}

There are 2.5 bathrooms in total, with one connected to each bedroom and an additional half bathroom attached to the living room.

{{photo_gallery "Cabin 2 Closets & Storage Photos"}}

Plenty of storage space is offered in the bedrooms, with walk-in closets in both rooms.

{{photo_gallery "Cabin 2 Balcony Photos"}}

The balcony runs the length of the suite, and has plenty of room for people to relax. A number of lounge chairs are supplied.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

The One Bedroom Suite offers 614 square feet of space, with room for up to 5 guests.

{{photo_gallery "Cabin 3 Bedroom Photos"}}

The single bedroom of this suite offers a queen sized bed, and the couch in the living room can be converted into a bed as well.

{{photo_gallery "Cabin 3 Bathroom Photos"}}

Two bathrooms are available, attached to the bedroom and the living room. The bathroom is larger than most, and offers his & hers sinks.

{{photo_gallery "Cabin 3 Other Rooms Photos"}}

The bedroom and living room are separated by a sliding door for privacy.

{{photo_gallery "Cabin 3 Closets & Storage Photos"}}

Plenty of storage space is on offer.

{{photo_gallery "Cabin 3 Balcony Photos"}}

The large balcony could hold a number of guests, with 2 chairs and room for more.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

Disney claims that the Standard Inside room can hold 3 or 4 guests, but it would be a tight squeeze: the room and storage is on the small side.

{{photo_gallery "Cabin 4 Bedroom Photos"}}

There is no separate bedroom, with the bed (queen size or twins are available) and a convertible couch.

{{photo_gallery "Cabin 4 Bathroom Photos"}}

The bathroom is rather small and feels very cramped. There is a shower and a tub.

{{photo_gallery "Cabin 5 Bedroom Photos"}}

The Deluxe Oceanview stateroom offers 214 sq. ft. of space, with a queen or twin beds and a convertible couch.

{{photo_gallery "Cabin 5 Bathroom Photos"}}

The bathroom is small, but adequate. There is a small storage space off of the bathroom.

{{photo_gallery "Cabin 6 Bedroom Photos"}}

The Deluxe Inside staterooms are a little larger than the standard ones, at 214 sq. ft. over the 184 sq. ft. of the standard stateroom. That makes for a more comfortable living space, especially with more than 2 guests.

{{photo_gallery "Cabin 6 Bathroom Photos"}}

The bathroom is small and cramped, but does offer most of the amenities required. There is a split shower and tub.

{{photo_gallery "Cabin 7 Bedroom Photos"}}

This room is not overly large at 304 sq. ft., but it is big enough to accommodate up to 5 people. There is a bed (queen or twin), a convertible couch and two pull-down beds on one wall.

{{photo_gallery "Cabin 7 Bathroom Photos"}}

The bathroom is rather small, and is no bigger than the other staterooms. This could be an issue in the morning, with everyone queuing up to use it.

{{photo_gallery "Cabin 7 Balcony Photos"}}

There is a small balcony off the room, which is large enough to hold two chairs and a table.

{{photo_gallery "Cabin 8 Bedroom Photos"}}

There are two bedrooms in the Royal Suite, on either side of the living room. One offers a queen sized bed, the other twin beds and two pull-down beds.

{{photo_gallery "Cabin 8 Bathroom Photos"}}

Both bathrooms have marble floors and surfaces, and offer a whirlpool tub to soak away the royal stress.

{{photo_gallery "Cabin 8 Closets & Storage Photos"}}

Plenty of storage space is available in the entrance way, and these cupboards are large enough to hold several suitcases.

{{photo_gallery "Cabin 8 Balcony Photos"}}

The balcony is very large and can be accessed from the living room or either bedroom.

{{photo_gallery "Toiletries Photos"}}

A selection of toiletries are placed in your room before your arrival. The more expensive suites get a wider selection.

{{photo_gallery "Appliances Photos"}}

A TV is installed in every room.

{{photo_gallery "Phone and Internet Photos"}}

All rooms offer a phone with voicemail services.

{{photo_gallery "In-room Entertainment & Services Photos"}}

The turn down service is accompanied with animal-shaped folded towels (Disney refers to this as Towelgami) and a complimentary chocolate (or four).

The {{product.model}} offers eight restaurants, ranging from the adults-only northern Italian Palo to the hot dogs and hamburgers of Pluto's Dog House. Guests rotate between the main restaurants over three nights, with assigned seating times and tables on each night.

{{photo_gallery "Restaurant 1 Overview Photos"}}

The Animators Palate showcases Disney animation history, with portraits of Disney characters spread around the dining room. As the dinner is served, these animated drawings come to life, with the servers becoming part of the show and Disney characters visiting while you eat.

{{photo_gallery "Restaurant 1 Lunch / Dinner Photos"}}

The lunch menu includes selections for kids, while the dinner menu is based around pacific rim cuisine.

{{photo_gallery "Restaurant 1 Dessert Photos"}}

Ice cream is the desert of choice at this restaurant.

{{photo_gallery "Restaurant 2 Overview Photos"}}

Parrot Cay is a Caribbean-themed restaurant, with a menu to match that is heavy on the spices and seafood, as well as offering more classic foods for picky eaters.

{{photo_gallery "Restaurant 2 Breakfast Photos"}}

A breakfast buffet is offered on most days.

{{photo_gallery "Restaurant 2 Lunch / Dinner Photos"}}

Lunch is served between 12 and 2pm buffet style, but there is a sit-down lunch on some days. There are two seatings for dinner : 5:30 to 6pm and 8 to 8:30pm.

{{photo_gallery "Restaurant 2 Dessert Photos"}}

The desert options are limited, but include standard fare such as chocolate cake and rice pudding with a Jamacan twist of added chocholate.

{{photo_gallery "Restaurant 3 Overview Photos"}}

The Beach Blanket Buffet has a more casual setup than some of the restaurants, and offers two seating areas: indoors and outdoors.

{{photo_gallery "Restaurant 3 Breakfast Photos"}}

Breakfast is offered as a buffet, with a standard selection, including omelets, pancakes and mickey-shaped waffles.

{{photo_gallery "Restaurant 3 Lunch / Dinner Photos"}}

Lunch is also a buffet, but with a wider selection of food options. For dinner, the buffet turns into a more formal affair, with servers and a 4-course menu. This restaurant can be chosen over any of the other main dining rooms on any night.

{{photo_gallery "Restaurant 4 Overview Photos"}}

Named after Ariel's father in the The Little Mermaid, this restaurant is more formal than the others, with fancy mosaics on the walls and a walk-in wine cooler.

{{photo_gallery "Restaurant 4 Breakfast Photos"}}

Breakfast is standard American food, with pancakes, waffles and the like on offer.

{{photo_gallery "Restaurant 4 Lunch / Dinner Photos"}}

Lunch is an open-seating event, so you can sit anywhere you like. The dinner menu is french themed, with dishes such as escargots, seared sea bass and roasted duck.

Goofys Galley aims to fill those difficult hours between meals with a selection of snacks and treats, such as cookies and sandwiches.

{{photo_gallery "Restaurant 7 Overview Photos"}}

There are three pools on this ship, with Mickeys pool being for the kids, Goofy for all the family, and the quiet cove pool for adults only.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

There are a good range of entertainment and recreation options on the Disney Wonder, with options for all ages.

The Disney Wonder offers a small, but adequate selection of lounges and public spaces for sitting back to people watch and chill out.

{{photo_gallery "Childrens' Areas Photos"}}

As you would expect from a Dinsey ship, there is plenty for the kids to do, such as the Oceaneer club, the Edge club for tweens and the Vibe club for older kids.

{{photo_gallery "Fitness Center Photos"}}

The fitness center offers a wide selection of fitness machines and exercises

For adults, the Disney Wonder offers a wide range of bars, clubs and other late-night amusements.

{{photo_gallery "Bar / Club 1 Overview Photos"}}

The Cadillac Lounge is a bar for adults only themed after the car company of the same name.

{{photo_gallery "Bar / Club 2 Overview Photos"}}

Diversions is a sports bar that allows the sports fan to keep up with the latest scores while afloat. Children are allowed during the day, but it is adults-only at night.

{{photo_gallery "Bar / Club 3 Overview Photos"}}

Alongside the Quiet Cove pool is Signals, an adults-only bar.

{{photo_gallery "Bar / Club 4 Overview Photos"}}

Designed to look like the inside of a giant radio, the WaveBands bar is a family venue during the day, but becomes an adults-only bar at night.

Disney prides themselves on their shows, so it is no surprise that the cast members go all out to entertain with a number of shows that feature Disney favorites from both old and new movies. These take place in the Walt Disney Theater at the back of the ship.

{{photo_gallery "Shows & Performances Photos"}}

The Disney Wonder is definitely intended for families first. While there are a few adults-only areas, you can expect a good number of kids darting around from one age-appropriate excitement to the next. While not a huge ship, compared to many others, the Wonder certainly has enough venues to keep you entertained for the duration.

Halloween on the High Seas Disney Cruise Review

Have you ever thought about booking a halloween on the high seas disney cruise check out my review here.

This post should have, quite literally, been written to years ago. BUT, the content is still relevant and better late than never, right? Since today is Halloween, I am  super  nostalgic for our Halloween on the High Seas Disney Cruise we took two years ago today… and so I thought, “You know what? I’m going to reminisce and go down memory lane.” Because that’s about as close as I’m going to get to going on a Disney Cruise right now…  My family and I LOVE Disney Cruises. ALL of us! We have been on four cruises at this point ( I blogged about our first two here and here )… and to say we love them really is actually an understatement.

Two years ago, we booked a Halloween on the High Seas cruise on the Disney Dream… ON Halloween! We had heard good things about the themed cruises, but this being our first experience at the time, we didn’t know what to expect. To say we were blown away is an understatement!

For those that have ever wondered what it’s like to book a Halloween on the High Seas Disney cruise, I thought I’d share some of the highlights of our trip!

I still remember this trip and think about it ALL the time two years later!

We left from Port Canaveral, Florida and we TOTALLY lucked out because SpaceX was launching from the Kennedy Space center at the same time we were embarking! It’s always fun to see if there are any scheduled rocket launches on the day you embark!

Halloween on the High Seas Disney Cruise Review (1)

The whole ship is decorated in really fun Halloween / fall decor! It’s not “spooky” really – my kids (who are easily scared) loved all the decor!

Halloween on the High Seas Disney Cruise Review (2)

One of the things that I love SO much about Disney Cruises is the ease of interacting with characters. There are a TON of scheduled character appearances and I don’t feel like you are rushed or have to wait FOREVER like you do at Disney world. On this cruise, Lilly was FINALLY excited about meeting characters… Amos? Not so much.

Lilly of course loved meeting her girl Doc McStuffins!

Halloween on the High Seas Disney Cruise Review (3)

And Sofia the First!!

Halloween on the High Seas Disney Cruise Review (10)

Gosh, they look like such babies!!!

Halloween on the High Seas Disney Cruise Review (11)

Meeting Princesses is one of our favorite parts of the trip!! However, it’s important to note on the Disney Cruises PRINCESS greetings need a TICKET. Now, the ticket is FREE, but you should book these in advance. You can also book princess greetings when you get on the ship, but I recommend doing it way in advance so you can get the timeslot you want.

Halloween on the High Seas Disney Cruise Review (17)

This is what Amos did for all the greetings… he just watched from the background. Haha!

Halloween on the High Seas Disney Cruise Review (18)

Tiana was, BY FAR, our favorite princess!!! She was so sweet.

Halloween on the High Seas Disney Cruise Review (20)

We opted to do something special on this cruise and book an appointment for Lilly in the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique! I will do a whole blog post on this experience, but let me just say, it was totally worth it. We just did the base package and Lilly loved getting pampered by her Fairy Godmother.

We packed SO MANY costumes for this trip (especially since it was a Halloween cruise). There are so many opportunities to dress up – but also totally fine if that’s not your jam. Just don’t think you’ll look “strange” if you do… almost EVERYONE wore costumes!!

On actually Halloween we dressed up and we decided to theme our costumes and we all went as Beauty and the Beast characters.

That’s one handsome Gaston… 😉

Halloween on the High Seas Disney Cruise Review (37)

Now, they do this for ALL the Halloween on the High Seas cruises, but ours was just a little extra special since we went ON Halloween! On the deck that evening they had Mickey’s Mouse-querade party complete with TRICK-OR-TREATING! It was so well organized and really fun. The kids loved going around to all the stations on the decks to get candy.

We were ported in Nassau this night and so the views were gorgeous!

Halloween on the High Seas Disney Cruise Review (44)

All the Disney characters were dressed up in Halloween gear, too! It was so fun having a full blown dance party with the Characters RIGHT THERE!

That night we had dinner in our favorite restaurant on the Disney Dream – Animator’s Palette. It’s an interactive restaurant and the food is so delicious!

The next day was Castaway Cay – which is our happy place. It’s Disney’s private island and honestly it’s the BEST PART OF THE CRUISE! We love Castaway Cay and we spend the  entire  day on the island.

Then, we had Pirate Night – which is a feature of  every  Caribbean and Bahamian itinerary. Everyone dresses up like a pirate, there’s a big pirate party on the main deck, and the night ends with fireworks at sea. It’s a highlight of every trip.

Halloween on the High Seas Disney Cruise Review (69)

They cracked me up with their pirate gear!

Halloween on the High Seas Disney Cruise Review (70)

Meeting Anna and Elsa is also a highlight! Like the other princess greetings, you need a (free) ticket for this one, too! So make sure to book in advance.

Halloween on the High Seas Disney Cruise Review (74)

Needless to say, Disney Cruises are ALWAYS amazing, but the Halloween on the High Seas cruise was absolutely a favorite for us. We had the best time, made so many memories, and it made us fall even more in love with Disney. Our kids talk about it all the time (heck, John and I do, too!), and we already can’t wait until we plan our next Halloween cruise.

Between trick or treating, special themed Halloween events on the ship (Nightmare before Christmas characters, spooky story times, etc.), there are things to do for every single person in the family!

The kids LOVE the kids club, nursery, and kids activities… and John and I love all the things for adults only like the lounges, adults only pools, spas, etc. Truly! We would go without kids… 😉

What questions do you have about Disney cruises? Any questions about the Halloween on the High Seas cruise specifically?

Strategies for a Successful 3-Night Halloween on the High Seas Disney Cruise

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

Disney Cruise Line’s Halloween on the High Seas cruises are a guest favorite, and while the status of the 2021 Fall season is still pending, the Fall 2022 cruises have been released, and include the ever-popular Halloween-themed cruises – including Halloween-themed cruises on the brand new Disney Wish.

No matter the length of your cruise, Disney Cruise Line’s Halloween on the High Seas cruises offer a mix of family-friendly Halloween festivities and the normal combined with the nautical entertainment of a typical sailing. However, packing this all into a 3-night cruise, while fun, can leave your head spinning if you don’t plan accordingly.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

RELATED : Booking for Fall 2022 Cruises begins June 21, 2021 for certain guests.

What activities can you expect on a 3-Night Halloween on the High Seas cruise?

The Disney Dream usually hosts most of these 3-night sailings. However, coming in 2022, the Disney Wish will carry on the Halloween on the High Seas nautical tradion, and there are several 3-night getaways on the schedule. Now don’t worry, you will not be short-changed on a 3-night cruise. Most of the Halloween-themed activities that take place on longer cruises, will also occur on the shorter sailings.

  • Storytime with the Caretaker at the Pumpkin Tree
  • Nightmare Before Christmas Sing and Scream
  • Mickey’s Mouse-querade Party
  • Adults-only costume contests
  • Trick-or-treating
  • Special food and drink menus

You simply have a more compact time frame to enjoy them.

Halloween on the High Seas cruise decor on the Disney Dream

Strategy 1: Go for it. Go for all of it!

This is the “Go Big or Go Home” strategy. You are only onboard for three short nights, so try to pack in as much nautical and spooky fun as you can.

Go to all of the shows. Trick or treat like a pro, and pack a costume for Halloween fun AND pirate night festivities (both of which happen on the same night on 3-night sailings – usually on the same night).

Sure, you’ll be walking off the ship looking like a real zombie, instead of a costumed one, but you will know that you made the most of every single moment.

I do not recommend this for families with small children. This strategy is great for teens and groups sailing with adults only.

Halloween on the High Seas cruise decor on the Disney Dream

Strategy 2: Selective Plan of Attack

If you want to maximize your fun, but you still want to relax a bit, or enjoy the ports of call (usually Nassau, Bahamas and Disney’s Castaway Cay ), you will need a more selective approach to choosing your cruise activities.

On a short cruise that mixes in a holiday theme, I like to relax onboard while the ship is docked in Nassau. This allows me time to enjoy brunch at Palo and time by the pool. Then I am well rested when it’s time to get dressed up and party.

If you really do want to enjoy your time on land instead, be sure to pack your sunscreen and stay hydrated. Sunburns do not mix with Halloween costumes and makeup.

Don’t forget, Pirate Night costumes are still Halloween costumes. While hard core Halloween on the High Seas sailors will dress differently for each event, it really isn’t necessary. One costume is easier to pack than two, and you won’t be running to your room for a quick change from your Halloween costume into your pirate regalia.

I recommend this strategy for fun-loving families with kids.

Halloween on the High Seas cruise decor on the Disney Dream

Strategy 3: Nice and Easy Does It

Disney Cruise Line does an amazing job making sure that guests of every age enjoy the Halloween festivities. Having said that, I take a more relaxed approach to the happenings on these very short sailings.

I use my Daily Navigator to get an overview of the activities, and if it’s something I want to do or see, I try to be somewhere nearby when the time is right.

For example, Mickey’s Mouse-querade Party is usually held in the Lobby Atrium. So, on the Disney Dream or Disney Fantasy, you will probably find me at the Vista Cafe, enjoying a nice coffee and soaking in the party atmosphere on a comfy sofa.

This is my preferred strategy these days. I’ve done the “Go Big” -style of sailing, and it was a blast. Everyone should do it once. These days, I enjoy a slower pace with a dash of excitement.

No matter your style, the best way to get the best price is to book your sailing early.

EVERYTHING We Know About Halloween Horror Nights 2024 at Universal Orlando

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

If you ask us, it’s NEVER too early to talk about all things spooky-ooky.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

As you might already know, Halloween begins in August in the theme park world, and that’s only a few months away. So, we’re gearing up to hear all sorts of Halloween news as well as prepare ourselves for some haunts. One thing we’re particularly excited about is Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Orlando .

We’re here to tell you ALL you need to know about this scary event. Put on your bravest face, and let’s go!

What is Halloween Horror Nights?

Universal Studios has been the headquarters for all things terrifying and downright spooky since Halloween Horror Nights started in 1991. After the park closes for regular guests, it is a special ticketed event that transforms into a park filled with nightmares and terrors to scare and delight from Wednesday-Sunday starting at 6:30PM until 2AM. A word of warning: Halloween Horror Nights is an intense event not suitable for all ages.

Dates and Tickets

Experience the ultimate scarefest at Universal Orlando Resort with Halloween Horror Nights, happening on select nights from August through November. In 2024, the spooktacular event begins on August 30th and continues thrilling guests until November 3rd, marking its earliest start and the longest season ever! With frights awaiting every Wednesday through Sunday, including Halloween night itself, brace yourself for an unforgettable journey into the macabre. As Halloween approaches, expect the crowds to intensify, adding to the eerie atmosphere of this frightfully fantastic event!

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

You can choose between four different ticket types, so let’s take a look at what each of them has to offer!

First, you can snag the  Halloween Horror Nights Single-Night Ticket!  This ticket allows you to select one night to attend the event and all it has to offer. These start at  $82.99  per person.

Next, you can purchase the  Halloween Horror Nights Express Pass.  This is an add-on to the single-night ticket that allows you to skip the regular lines  once  at all of the haunted houses, and other participating rides and attractions. Prices start at  $129.99 . Remember, you need to purchase your single-night admission separately!

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

Do you want a look behind the scenes? Well, the  Halloween Horror Nights R.I.P. Tour add-on may be for you. This add-on comes with a guided walking tour of the event so that you can get a more intimate look at the event, and it can be a super unique experience! It is pricey, though — starting at $359.99 . You will need to purchase your single-night ticket to utilize this add-on.

If you want to see what the haunted houses are like during the day with the lights on, then the  Halloween Horror Nights Behind-the-Screams: Unmasking the Horror Tour  might be for you. This ticket will give you the opportunity to see what things are like during the day before everyone comes out to play at night. You do not need a valid park admission to take part in this tour. You can choose between a 3-hour and 6-hour tour with this ticket. These start at  $99.99.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

For those craving more thrills than just one night can offer, Universal Orlando typically offers multi-night tickets. However, it’s essential to note that in 2023, all multi-night tickets eventually sold out. These multi-night tickets come with various perks, granting access to different nights of the event:

  • The Rush of Fear Pass: Provides entry to the first 18 event nights.
  • The Frequent Fear Pass: Access to every Sunday through Thursday, plus the first weekend.
  • The Frequent Fear Plus Pass: Includes entry every Sunday through Friday, plus the first and last Saturday.
  • The Ultimate Frequent Fear Pass: Grants access to EVERY night of the event, along with complimentary regular parking after 5 p.m. on all event nights.

Houses and Scare Zones

While the houses for  Halloween Horror Nights have not been confirmed, we can assume that we will see new houses this year. No matter the theme, this after-hours event normally has 10 haunted houses and five scare zones spread throughout the park.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

Last year’s houses were Universal Monsters: Unmasked, Stranger Things 4, Bloodmoon: Dark Offerings, Dr. Oddfellow’s Twisted Origins, Yeti: Campground Kills, Dueling Dragons: Choose Thy Fate, The Last of Us, The Exorcist: Believer, Chucky: Ultimate Kill Count.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

There have been rumors that a house based on Five Nights at Freddy’s will be joining the line-up of houses this year, as the movie was released last fall. This is all speculation and not confirmed. What we do know is that this year’s  Halloween Horror Night s  will feature 10 new houses.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

Scare Zones will also be returning this year. Think of these as haunted houses that are not contained inside. Instead, the Scare Zones are themed and feature TONS of characters walking around. It’s really fun if you love thrills.

Just like any special ticketed event,  Halloween Horror Nights  has food offerings that are only available during the event. Some of the food is based on the current year’s houses.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

For example, last year, you could grab a bite to eat at Surfer Boy Pizza , based on the fictional pizza shop in Stranger Things 4. You could try the famous Surfer Boy Hawaiian Pizza or even the cheese and vegan options.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

Themed around the Last of Us, last year you could try the Left Behind Ravioli, which fits into the story of having to leave their lives behind in the Last of Us. This dish was mini cheese ravioli with marinara, truffle cream, garlic bread, and tempura fried enoki mushrooms and was served in a food ration tin can.

While menus for  Halloween Horror Nights  usually drop in August, it is safe to assume that the food offerings will change based on which houses will be part of the 2024 season. We are looking forward to this year’s themed eats!

Merchandise and Souvenirs

We are suckers for merchandise at theme parks, especially when it is for an after-hours event like Halloween Horror Nights.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

We got a sneak peek at some of the merchandise that will be sold at this year’s  Halloween Horror Nights . The first collection is called  “Where Horror Lives.”  We saw the bright orange shirt for this collection, which features the phrase “Where Horror Lives.” There is also a black hat and tumbler with the same logo.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

There may also be themed merchandise based around the houses. Last year, the Dueling Dragons: Choose Thy Fate shirt was extremely popular. Last year’s Stranger Things 4 merchandise featured T-shirts, mugs, and even a drawstring bag with Vecna on it.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

Once the houses for 2024 are announced, we will start to get a better idea of what merchandise is offered.

SPECULATION: Will Halloween Horror Nights come to Epic Universe?

While no one can definitely say whether Halloween Horror Night will be coming to Epic Universe – though we do have some educated guesses to share below –  there’s no doubt that the new park would have the PERFECT land for it: Dark Universe.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

Arguably one of the most anticipated of Epic Universe’s “portals”, Dark Universe is going to give die-hard Universal fans something they’ve been craving for decades: A fully immersive land dedicated to the Universal Monsters like Frankenstein, Dracula, and the Wolf Man.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

Dark Universe is said to include Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment, a massive dark ride that will include encounters with “Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, and a new character named Dr. Victoria Frankenstein” according to Universal. In addition, the land is also set to feature a second attraction, Curse of the Werewolf, a spinning family coaster, as well as heavily themed shopping and dining. Most notably, The Burning Blade Tavern, a highly anticipated dining location whose name is reminiscent of a famous scene from Universal’s version of Frankenstein.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

Everything about Dark Universe makes it seem like the perfect location for Universal to go all out with Halloween decor and seasonal additions all focused on the classic stable of monster characters, and we do believe that’s likely to happen. However, back to our aforementioned educated guess, it seems unlikely that Halloween Horror Nights will come over to Epic Universe in full.

disney wonder halloween cruise reviews

Whew. Okay. That’s about everything we know so far! We’ll be sure to keep you updated with more news as we have it as well as specifics when those are released. Make sure to follow along so that you never miss a thing!
