Campsites, cookouts, and golf carts. What do these three things have in common? They can all be found at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground ! So pack your RV, or just your Mickey Mouse suitcase, and join us at this charming resort area found at Walt Disney World Resort .

Campsites and Cabins

RVers will enjoy the ability to choose from several different types of campsites. Premium, premium meadow, full hook-up, preferred and even tent or pop-up campsites are available for guests to choose from. Vacationing in a larger RV is not a problem here as premium campsites can accommodate equipment on a concrete pad up to 18 feet by 60 feet!

Campsites book quickly, especially during the Halloween and holiday season, so make your campsite reservations as early as possible.

If a camper or RV is not how you roll, have no fear as this resort offers guests the option of staying in adorable, rustic cabins. The cabins come complete with a kitchen that includes not only a refrigerator and dishwasher but also a convection/microwave oven and two countertop burners. We can almost smell the bacon sizzling from here. Are you more of a griller when it comes to camping? The cabins also come with a charcoal grill. All you need to bring is the charcoal and the burgers and dinner is served. Lastly, we want to emphasize how much room the cabins offer. Sleeping up to six adults, the cabins include one queen bed, one bunk bed and one double-size sleeper sofa. Who gets the top bunk will be a decision we will leave up to you!

Transportation

Another wonderful perk of staying at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground is the many options guests have when it comes to transportation. A short boat ride can take guests to Magic Kingdom Park, and bus stops can be found throughout the entire resort area. Bikes and golf carts may also be rented to check out the beautiful property.

If renting a golf cart, or brining your own, don't forget the decorations! Streamers, banners and lights are just a few of the ideas to make your golf cart stand out!

When the dinner bell rings, guests will not be at a loss for food options! Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, P & J’s Southern Takeout is the place for grabbing some grub to take back to your campsite and get those bellies full for a day in the parks. Weary travelers come from all parts looking for that all-you-care-to-enjoy skillet. That scrumptious meal can be found at Trail’s End Restaurant . But don’t forget they are only open for breakfast and dinner!

Okay partners, now it’s time to talk about the one and only dining experience that comes complete with a hilarious stage show here at the Fort Wilderness Resort. Yes siree, we are talking about the Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Review . The Pioneer Hall Players are ready to entertain your party, and perhaps even invite a few of them to join them on stage, all while enjoying a delectable, tummy-rubbing, toe-tapping feast. But hold up, partners – this dining experience returns on June 23, 2022, and reservations will be available beginning May 26, 2022.

If you are looking for a watering hole to cool off and maybe even catch a little shut-eye, you will find two at Fort Wilderness Resort. Meadow Swimmin’ Pool is located near the center of the resort. Here you will find a water slide, splash pad and even a snack bar. Wilderness Swimmin’ Pool is located in the cabins area but be sure to pack your cooler as there are no food offerings at this pool.

Activities galore can also be found here for the young and young at heart. Fort Wilderness Archery Experience is available for guests ages 7 and up and offers those participating the chance to learn how to use a compound bow. The planDisney panelists also can’t say enough about a visit to the Tri-Circle-D Ranch ! Take some time for a carriage ride, trail ride or just go admire Cinderella’s beautiful ponies. Biking, fishing, and watching Movies Under the Stars are also offered at this resort that seems to have it all!

What a wild, crazy ride this pocket guide series has been! We hope you have enjoyed them all and learned a little along the way to help you make your decision on which resort is best for your party. If you missed one, be sure to swipe through our planDisney Pocket Guide:

The Ultimate Guide To Camping At Disney Fort Wilderness Resort

September 14, 2020 //  by  Kimberly Jones //   5 Comments

You already know about all the Disney Resorts and what you can expect when staying at them. You know you will have a comfortable bed, room amenities, easy access to the front desk, etc. But did you know that you can have a whole different experience than what you are used to? You are able to go camping at Disney!

Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground has been open since 1971, making it one of the first resorts at Disney World (right after Contemporary and Polynesian)! If you love nature/woods or you’re looking for a new and different experience, Fort Wilderness is a great place to stay.

Fort Wilderness has unique camping categories, delicious restaurants, amazing activities, and more! This resort really has it all, making it a great place to stay or even just visit!

Getting To The Disney Campground

Table of Contents

Getting to Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground can be tricky while driving if you don’t know what you are doing, but that’s why we are here to help! Fort Wilderness is located in the Magic Kingdom Resort Area .

You’ll want to head towards the Magic Kingdom parking lot toll where you’d enter to park at the Transportation and Ticket Center. But instead of going through the toll, veer right to take a road that will take you past the toll and towards the Magic Kingdom Resorts. From here, follow the signs towards Fort Wilderness, which will be on your right. Easy peasy!

If you are flying to Orlando, you are able to take any of the paid shuttle services from the airport to Fort Wilderness. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the fact that someone else is doing the driving for you!

Your shuttle or private car will take you to the Reception Outpost where you can check-in, grab your magic bands if they weren’t delivered to your house, asks questions, get a map, and more!

Near the Reception Outpost is a bus stop that will take you to your campsite or cabin. Fort Wilderness also has vans that will take you to where you are staying when you first check in!

Getting Around While Camping At Disney

Having a car at Fort Wilderness can make it a little easier to get around during your stay. You can drive and park near the buses that take you to the parks. There is limited time parking by the Meadow Trading Post to do some quick shopping. You can also just drive to the parks yourself!

If you don’t have the luxury of having a car at Fort Wilderness, no worries! There are plenty of other ways to get around the campground.

Fort Wilderness does have the option for guests to rent golf carts to drive around in. It costs $60 per day to rent the golf cart. You can also bring your own golf cart if you have a way to get it to the resort!

The great thing about the golf carts is you can drive them pretty much anywhere and leave them while you go to the parks. There is golf cart parking at the bus stop that takes you to the parks, the Meadow Trading Post, and The Settlement Outpost (this is where you can catch a boat to the Magic Kingdom !).

Now if you don’t have a car with you and don’t want to rent a golf cart, there is one other way to get around the campground. Fort Wilderness has its own internal bus loops with 28 loops. The internal bus can take you to different sections such as the campgrounds and the cabins. You can also use it to go to the different outposts, trading post, pools, and bus transportation to the parks.

If you’re not sure what bus to take to get to where you need to go, just ask the bus driver! They will help you get to your next destination.

Types Of Camping At Disney World

There are multiple different types of camping you can do at the Fort Wilderness. The campsites are all very similar, but there are different sizes to accommodate for your needs. Across the 750 acres of Fort Wilderness are 799 campsites and 409 cabins.

The different categories are:

  • Tent or Pop-Up Campsite
  • Full Hook-Up Campsite
  • Preferred Campsite
  • Premium Campsite
  • Premium Meadow Campsite

There is Wi-Fi available all over Fort Wilderness so you don’t have to be worried about being disconnected from the world while camping at Disney.

One of the best perks of staying at Fort Wilderness at both the campsites and cabins is that you can park one vehicle for free. Each place has a paved driveway for your car and/or golf cart. Other Disney resorts charge you a nightly parking fee to park your car at the resort.

You will be able to choose if you want to stay in a campsite or cabin when booking your Disney reservation. If you choose to stay at the campground, you will be able to choose what category you want to stay in.

The campsites are great if you want an authentic camping experience with all the amenities. But if you aren’t ready to “rough it”, the cabins are absolutely beautiful and very accommodating.

If you stay at Fort Wilderness during Halloween or the holidays , you can decorate your campsite or cabin! Guests will bring decorations, string lights, inflatable decorations, and more to decorate their area. It can be a really fun way to make your area unique!

Disney Fort Wilderness Campground Rates

One of the best reasons to go camping at Disney is because of how cheap it can be! The prices do fluctuate depending on the type/category of camping you choose and when you plan to visit Disney.

The different categories of camping range from $60 to $200 per night. However, this price can be more or less depending on what time of the year you go.

The Tent or Pop-Up Campsite is the cheapest option and the Premium Meadow Campsite is the most expensive. The Premium Meadow Campsite gets the same amenities and is the same size as the Premium Campsite, it is just closer to the Meadow Trading Post, Meadow Recreation Area, Bike Barn and campfire area. So essentially you are paying around $10 extra a night to stay closer to the activities!

Why the prices can be worth it even during peak season is because you can accommodate up to 10 guests on each campsite. If you bring 10 people to go camping at Disney, you are paying much less per person. At other resorts, you would need multiple rooms which can get really pricey.

The cabins at Fort Wilderness are more expensive than the campsites, but you get some extra benefits. They costs around $350-$400 per night, but it can be more or less depending on the season you visit. The cabins can accommodate up to 6 guests, which is still a great option for large families.

Map Of The Disney Campground

Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground is large, so a map is a great reference to have while camping at Disney. It can get a bit overwhelming, but Cast Members are always willing to help get you where you need to be!

There are multiple bus loops that you can take, so it’s important to know which one you need to be on. The bus drivers will usually ask you where you are going to make sure you get on the right bus.

There are maps at every bus stop to look at if you need help finding out where to go. Getting around Fort Wilderness is easy once you get the hang of it!

Bringing Pets With You To Camp At Disney

If you have a dog in the family and want to include them on the vacation, you can! Fort Wilderness allows you to bring your furry friends along to join in on the fun. Of course there are certain rules you must follow if you are going to bring your pet with you.

Dogs are allowed at every campsite besides the Tents and Pop-Up Campers. This means you will have to keep your dog in a climate-controlled RV or a cabin. You are allowed to bring up to 2 dogs with you. If you leave the RV or cabin, you must keep your dog on a handheld leash that is no more than 8 feet long.

You may walk your dog on the on-leash trails around the resort! There is also an off-leash Waggin’ Trails Dog Park for your pet to enjoy. Just make sure you pick up any of your pet’s droppings and properly throw them away.

If you are going to be away for most of the day at the parks, there are options for day and overnight kennel care at the Best Friends Pet Care. It costs $5 per night to bring your pet along to stay at the Fort Wilderness.

Just know that if your dog interferes with other guests’ experience or someone files a legitimate complaint to management, you will either have to get you dog to stop the issue, board them in an off-site kennel, or leave the resort.

Bringing your pet along for vacation can be fun and exciting! However, make sure you are aware of all the rules and conditions you must follow before you make your decision.

Fort Wilderness Cabins

The cabins at Fort Wilderness are a wonderful place to stay if you don’t want to go full out camping at Disney. Cabins accommodate up to 6 guests and have an adorable rustic feel to them. You really feel like you are in the woods away from everything while staying here.

Outside the cabin is your own paved driveway for a car and golf cart, a charcoal grill, a picnic table, and a private patio. There are two doors to the cabin. One that you use to get into the main part of the cabin, and one that leads out from the bedroom on to the patio.

Inside the cabin is a kitchen, dining table, living room with a T.V., bathroom, and bedroom. The kitchen has a full size fridge with ice maker, microwave, two stove top burners, sink, dishwasher, dishes, cookware, toaster, and coffee maker.

Disney offers a grocery delivery service that will deliver groceries right to your cabin! You just order ahead before your vacation, pick out what you need, and voila! Fresh food to eat and cook during your stay!

The living room contains a pull out couch with large drawers under the T.V. to store clothes in. The bedroom has a queen size bed and bunkbed with a closet and T.V. The entire cabin offers plenty of space and room to move around.

The cabins come with all the normal amenities of a Disney resort such as shampoo, body wash, and towels. Housekeeping also comes to clean your cabin and even do your dishes!

There is also AC in the cabin, so no need to worry about it getting too hot! There is a telephone in the cabin if you need to call the front desk for anything.

The cabins at Fort Wilderness are a great place to stay for large families who want a unique experience. It really does feel liked camping without having to sleep in a tent!

RV Camping At Disney

There are lots of options when it comes to RV camping at Disney. It all depends on your budget, how big you want your campsite to be, and the location you want to be in.

All of these RV campsites have a sewage hook-up, a concrete pad for the RV and tent, a charcoal grill, a paved driveway, a hose for water, a picnic table, and an electricity hook up. They also all accommodate up to 10 guests.

The Full Hook-Up Campsite has a concrete pad that is 10 ft. by 50 ft. for a camper and a tent. The Preferred Campsite has a concrete pad that is 10 ft. by 45 ft. for an RV and small tent. It is preferred because it is close to the marina.

The Premium Campsite has a concrete pad that is 18 ft. by 60 ft. for a larger RV. The Premium Meadow Campsite is the same exact thing as the Premium Campsite. However, like we mentioned before, it is closer to the Meadow Trading Post, Meadow Recreation Area, Bike Barn, and campfire area.

There are Comfort Stations in each campsite loop where there are showers, sinks and restrooms. You will have to bring your own towels when staying at the campsites.

Don’t forget that you can always request a certain section when you are booking your reservation. You can’t go wrong with any of these campsites. It all depends on what your needs are!

Check out our 12 Best Airbnbs Near Disney World For All Budgets article! One Airbnb offer was for a RV and golf cart that can be delivered to Fort Wilderness! You can also find other RVs and golf carts to rent in Florida on other websites as well!

Tent Camping At Disney

If you’re ready to fully commit to camping at Disney, book a campsite that accommodates your tent! You will have to bring your own camping gear such as a tent and sleeping bags if you plan to camp at Fort Wilderness.

The pad area is 10ft by 25 ft. This has room for a pop up camper and up to two tents. You could bring two separate tents or one large tent. This area also accommodates up to 10 guests.

Tent camping gets all the same amenities as RV camping! There is a picnic table, grill, electric hook up, water hose, and Wi-Fi. The only thing not at the tent campsites are sewage hook-ups.

There are Comfort Stations located in the tent loops as well for all of your bathroom needs. You again will have to bring your own towels just like the RV campers.

You pretty much need to bring everything you would need while camping. Disney just provides the space for you with some extra amenities. That’s what makes it so cheap compared to other Disney resorts !

Dining Options At For Wilderness Campground

There are several dining options to enjoy while camping at Disney. There are two table service restaurants located at Fort Wilderness. One of them is Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue and the other is Trails End.

Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue

Hoop-Dee-Doo Revue is a fan favorite because you get dinner and a show! Buckle in for a night full of singing and performances with an adorable western theme. But let’s get on to the best part, the food! The meal is family style, and you get cornbread, fried chicken, ribs, beans, and vegetables. To finish off this wonderful meal is some delicious strawberry shortcake! Sangria and beer are also included for any guests 21 and over.

Hoop-Dee-Doo Revue is located in Pioneer Hall over by the Settlement Outpost. There are 3 shows every night. This is an experience you will definitely need a reservation for!

You will have to prepay when booking this experience, and there are different seating categories to choose from. It’s worth it to pay a little extra for the better seating! You can also use two Table Service credits from the Disney Dining Plan .

If you want all the delicious food but don’t need all the fluff of a show, head over to Trails End! Trails End is a buffet restaurant that serves breakfast and dinner daily. They also have a delicious brunch on Saturdays and Sundays.

For breakfast, they serve classics like Mickey Waffles, however, they have a lot of other tasty offerings as well! You can enjoy sausage, bacon, biscuits and gravy, cheese grits, breakfast pizza, and more!

There is so much food offered for dinner at Trails End, you most likely won’t be able to try it all! (But you can certainly try!) They essentially have all the same food offered at Hoop-Dee-Doo Revue, plus more! They also have some very yummy desserts to finish off your meal.

Trails End is one of the cheaper buffets on Disney property, making it a great place to eat! It’s located right next to Hoop-Dee-Doo Revue, and is very close to the water. This makes it really easy to get to Magic Kingdom by boat right after your meal!

Trails End Menu

P&Js Southern Takeout

P&Js Southern Takeout is the quick service location of Fort Wilderness. Here, you can find some quick and easy southern comfort food. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. It’s the perfect place for a quick bite to eat, or you can even just take it back to your campsite to enjoy.

They serve fried chicken, ribs, pizza, burgers, sandwiches, and more! They even have a full slab of ribs and 8-piece fried chicken combo that can feed 4 to 6 people.

During lunch time, I have been able to order food from P&Js and then sit in Trails End to eat my food. P&Js is in the same building as Trails End, so this make it really easy to use their tables.

This is where you can also refill your Disney mugs, so make sure to take advantage of that!

If you order food at P&Js during breakfast or dinner time, you will have to find a place outside to eat, or you’ll have to take your food back to your campsite. There is no inside seating at the quick service location since it is meant for takeout.

Pools At Disney’s Fort Wilderness Campground

There are two pools to enjoy at Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground! The Meadow Pool is the feature pool of this resort. This is a nice and relaxing area to cool off and take a break!

The Meadow Pool has water features, a water play area for kids with two small slides, a hot tub, and a water slide. There is a quick service food location next to this pool for some yummy eats. You can also refill your Disney mugs here!

The Wilderness Pool is the second pool at this resort. This pool is closer to the front of the resort and more secluded. It is a much more quiet location, which is perfect for adults. There aren’t any water play areas or water features here. It is just meant to be a nice relaxing area to take a load off.

You can easily take the internal buses to the pools. Don’t forget to bring the towels and sunscreen!

Things To Do Around The Disney Campground

One of the greatest perks of staying at Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground is the endless amounts of activities for you to do! You can spend a whole day just going from activity to activity and never get bored.

A great, free thing to do at Disney for everyone is Chip ‘N’ Dale’s Campfire Sing-A-Long. This is a fun way to meet characters for free outside of the park! You get to sing songs around the campfire with your favorite chipmunks! You can also roast marshmallows to make s’mores. Stay after the fun for a nightly Disney movie!

Tri-Circle-D Ranch is another free place to visit at Fort Wilderness! Here you can visit the stables to see the horses that work all around the Disney resort (including Cinderella’s Ponies!). You can also watch as blacksmiths make horseshoes. This is a fun place to visit because there is so much to see!

There are also other horse related activities at Fort Wilderness. You can go horseback riding, have your kids try a pony ride, go on a wagon ride or even a horse-drawn carriage ride! Whichever way you like riding horses, whether it’s by being pulled by them or sitting on top of them, Fort Wilderness has it all!

If horses aren’t your thing, try out the Wilderness Back Trail Adventure. This is a 2-hour Segway tour among the wooded areas of Fort Wilderness. You’ll visit Wilderness Lodge, the stables at Tri-Circle-D Ranch, and Bay Lake. This is a very unique way to tour Fort Wilderness!

There are so many other activities to do such as archery, bike rentals, fishing, boat rentals, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, basketball, and volleyball! Fort Wilderness has activities for everyone’s different tastes, so no one will feel left out!

I want to say yes. One of my friends just camped there with a converted ambulance, but the outside still looks like a fire/EMT truck.

About Fort Wilderness Resort And Campground

If this is your first visit to Fort Wilderness, then you should know the amenities in store for you will not disappoint. Fort Wilderness is a spacious area for tent and RV camping. For those looking to enjoy the cabin experience, the resort also offers fully equipped, air-conditioned log cabins available for rent.

Expert Len Testa, a frequent traveler and co-author of the 2020 edition of the Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World , told TravelAwaits that Fort Wilderness offers what are arguably the most recreational activities and facilities of all the Disney resorts. The area features two video arcades, campfire programs, movies, a dinner theater, swimming pools, a beach, and walking paths, plus bike, boat, canoe, golf-cart, and kayak rentals.

He went on to share that you can enjoy horseback riding, wagon rides, and tennis, basketball, and volleyball courts, and that there are multiple dining options, from a full-service restaurant to a food truck and a tavern. Within walking distance of the campsites, you’ll find toilets, showers, pay phones, ice machines, and laundry facilities.

1. Bring Your Furry Companion, But Be Sure To Request A Pet-Friendly Campsite

One of the best things about Fort Wilderness is that all are welcome, and that includes your best furry friend. Pups are most certainly welcome at the resort, but you’ll have to notify Fort Wilderness prior to your arrival. Siera Duiser, a travel agent with Destinations in Florida , told TravelAwaits , “Guests with a pet do need to request a dog-friendly campsite at the time of booking and then bring the dog’s vaccine record to the front desk when checking in. Disney even provides a welcome gift for the dogs at check in.”

2. Reserve A Golf Cart In Advance To Assist In Getting Around The Resort

Fort Wilderness’s 750 acres of green forests, with all the charms of hanging moss and uneven ground, can pose a challenge to easily navigating the resort. Fortunately, golf carts are available for guests to take advantage of. Dusier shares, “Many guests do like to rent a golf cart for their stay at Fort Wilderness to make it easier getting around the property. The golf carts are limited and often sell out, so it is best to reserve them as early as possible.”

3. Dine In At Trails End, A Delicious And Affordable Hidden Gem

One of the best things about vacationing at Fort Wilderness is that you’ll never be at loss for delicious restaurant options. From hearty buffets to fun-filled dinner shows, you can satisfy your cravings and accommodate your budget by choosing from one of many affordable eating options on site.

Dusier said one restaurant in particular is a must do. Where do you have to dine during your Fort Wilderness stay? Trail’s End Restaurant . Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, Dusier told TravelAwaits , “One of the best hidden gem restaurants at Disney is Trails End, which is at the campground. It has a delicious buffet and is one of the most affordable dining options on the property. They also have a take out counter with grab-and-go items.”

4. Set Aside Time To Meet Your Neighbors

One aspect of Fort Wilderness that makes it such a memorable experience is its intimate, small-town feel. There are very few resorts one can travel to where the culture so enthusiastically encourages visitors to interact with and meet the other guests. Expert Kimberly Button, a Disney blogger , author of The Disney Queue Line Survival Guidebook , and former full-time RVer, told TravelAwaits you should “plan time to meet your neighbors.”

She said if that sounds like small-town America, it’s because that’s how Fort Wilderness feels. “There’s not too many places left where you can walk by someone’s house, strike up a conversation, and soon be sharing drinks on their picnic table. That’s how Fort Wilderness is. Spend a morning or evening walking the loops, saying hi to people and — most importantly — checking out their Disney decorations! A lot of people go crazy decorating with Disney, especially at Christmas time, so you’ll want to explore the campground loops.”

5. Spend The Day In Fort Wilderness

It’s common for travelers planning a trip to Disney World to budget all of their time for the theme parks. And while the theme parks are among the best in the world, Button told TravelAwaits that if you don’t plan carefully, you’ll miss out on the enjoyable, laid-back experience of Fort Wilderness.

“Leave a day just to enjoy Fort Wilderness,” she said. “With the pools, a water play area, campfire sing-alongs, and more, it’s a shame to spend all day every day in the theme parks. You’ll want to leave lots of room open for relaxing and enjoying this laid-back lifestyle.”

6. Arrange For Boat Transportation

Getting around Fort Wilderness is now easier and more enjoyable than ever since you can travel to and from on a ferry or boat. The Walt Disney World Water Transportation services the Magic Kingdom park, Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Disney Springs, and select Walt Disney World Resort hotels. Most routes run on 15 to 30 minute intervals.

When asked about the boat transportation, Button shared her insights on the service: “Boat transportation from Fort Wilderness will bring you to the Contemporary Resort or Magic Kingdom. From there, you can hop a monorail to explore the Polynesian Resort with its tropical feel or the elegance of the Grand Floridian Resort. You truly can enjoy so much from this one location.”

7. Walk The Path Along Pioneer Hall For A Chance To See Woodland Wildlife

One of the most wondrous sights to behold at Fort Wilderness is being greeted by the woodland wildlife that lives there. While deer can at times be very timid creatures, Testa told TravelAwaits that if you take the path along Pioneer Hall, you can be sure to see deer and other wildlife.

If you’re in the mood to walk, he suggests looking for the path near Pioneer Hall that leads to the Wilderness Lodge area. It’s a flat, paved walkway about three-quarters of a mile long that Testa says is ideal for seeing deer and other woodland creatures. The path also provides convenient access to the dining options around Wilderness Lodge.

8. Choose Your Campsite Wisely

You know the saying A horse is only as good as its rider ? Well, a camping trip is only as good as its campsite. In order to experience the richness of a camping trip (including quick access to facilities and amenities), it’s imperative that you select the best campsite. Fortunately, our experts share their insights on what the best Fort Wilderness campsite is depending on your desired camping experience.

From the upcoming 2020 edition of the Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World : “For tent and RV campers, there’s a fairly stark trade-off between sites convenient to pools, restaurants, trading posts, and other amenities and those that are most scenic, shady, and quiet. RVers who prefer to be near guest services, the marina, the beach, and the restaurant and tavern should go for Loops 100, 200, 700, and 400 in that order.”

Testa said loops 100 and 400 are close to ongoing hotel construction, which might mean less-than-peaceful-sounding days.

Loops 1400, 1300, 1000, and 1500 are near one of the campground’s facility areas, giving campers quick access to a pool, trading post, bikes and golf carts, and the campfire program. Testa said he shared these in order of preference.

For campers after a more tranquil, scenic setting, Testa recommended loops 1800, 1900, 1700, and 1600 (in that order), as well as the sites on the 700 loop, although he noted that loop may be subject to construction noise.

According to Testa, the best loop of all is Loop 300, which offers what he calls a lovely setting with close proximity to amenities. Tent and pop-up campers should go for loop 1500 or 2000. Loop 1500 is nearest to a pool, convenience store, and the campfire program.

Also from the upcoming 2020 Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World : “With the exception of Loops 1800 and 1900, avoid sites within 40 yards of the loop entrance [as] these are almost always flanked by one of the main traffic arteries within Fort Wilderness. Further, sites on the outside of the loop are almost always preferable to those in the center. RVers should note that all sites are back-ins and that the loop access roads are pretty tight and narrow.”

9. Avoid The Crowds: Consider Camping At Fort Wilderness In The Off Season

Regardless of where you live, early summer is without a doubt one of the more popular times to go on a camping trip. However, at popular camping destinations like Fort Wilderness, camping during peak seasons can mean the added stress of large crowds and long lines. To ensure that you can enjoy the richness of all that Fort Wilderness has to offer, expert Nikida Metellus, owner of ThemeParkHipster , said you should consider planning your trip in the off-season.

Metellus told TravelAwaits she uses Disney crowd calendars (like this one from MagicGuides) to help determine the best season to book Fort Wilderness Campground stays. “I recommend early November or mid-January. You will be able to maximize your days and really enjoy the Walt Disney World Resort area.”

10. Cap Your Night Off With A View Of The Happily Ever After Fireworks Show

Sometimes the perfect ending to an amazing vacation day means capping your evening off with an extraordinary fireworks and nighttime spectacular show . Gather the whole family and take in a journey of dazzling light, color, and song as you reel in the last moments of a truly magical vacation at the Magic Kingdom. Metellus told TravelAwaits , “A classic nightly treat is to watch the Electric Water Pageant on the Seven Seas Lagoon and to cap your night off with a spectacular lakeside view of the Happily Ever After fireworks show over at the Magic Kingdom.”

11. Follow This Disney Fort Wilderness Packing Checklist

Getting ready for any camping trip is hard work. Organizing gear, confirming your reservation, packing the car while double checking that everyone has what they need can certainly be overwhelming. While you can rest assured that Fort Wilderness will have what you need in the event you leave a few items at home, Metellus has compiled a list of items you’ll want to take with you on your fun-filled Fort Wilderness vacation.

  • Hat for sunny days

Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground: the BEST Family Disney World Choice

Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground: the BEST Family Disney World Choice

Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground is the perfect spot for a family visiting Disney World , especially if theme parks and city visits aren’t your normal vacation. One of the best value resorts at Disney World, Fort Wilderness is a collection of cabins, campsites and RV sites all with the Disney feel and resort amenities.

While it’s always nice to stay in a nice hotel (we really love Disney’s Contemporary Resort ), staying at Fort Wilderness in the heart of the Florida forest is unique and wonderful. This is our full review and everything you need to know for planning a stay at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground.

Book Disney’s Fort Wilderness Cabins here!

Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground is the most fun and unusual accommodations at Disney World. See what to do, where to dine and camping options at Disney World.

Where is Fort Wilderness?

While it’s not directly adjacent to one of the Disney Worlds parks like the Grand Floridian or Animal Kingdom Lodge, Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground is really close to both the Magic Kingdom and EPCOT . It’s not walking distance to any of the parks, but when you’re taking resort transportation it’s quick and easy.

If you’re visiting Disney’s Animal Kingdom or Hollywood Studios to experience Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge , it will take a bit longer to get there via the resort transportation buses , but it’s still not bad, especially in comparison to driving each day and paying for parking and then driving back to your Fort Wilderness cabin or campsite.

Address for Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground:

4510 N. Ft. Wilderness Dr. Lake Buena Vista, FL 32830

What Are the Accommodation Options at Fort Wilderness?

Fort Wilderness is so cool! It feels like a National Park mixed with a Montana ranch . Disney World has kept the area thoroughly wooded and has the cabins and campground broken into neighborhoods (“passes” or “trails”), similar to Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort . Walking around the property is actually a fun activity at Fort Wilderness, and with tons of wildlife all through the forest, no doubt you’ll at least see deer or wild turkeys as you’re out for a stroll.

If you’re interested in staying at the cabins at Fort Wilderness or one of the campsites, book it as soon as you have plans firmed up. While the resort is really quite large with a wide variety of camping accommodations, it fills up far in advance. A good alternative to the Cabins at Fort Wilderness is staying at the Art of Animation Resort , in comparison of space, sleeping arrangements and value.

Check in / Check Out at the Fort

Arriving at Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground feel EXACTLY like arriving and checking into the Roosevelt cabins in Yellowstone National Park . You enter into the Outpost, which is the main lobby, and it’s perfectly rustic and outdoorsy. The log structure and furniture set the mood for staying at Fort Wilderness Resort. There is also a kids corner with the Disney standard of classic shows playing quietly in case there’s a wait to check in.

Through the My Disney Experience app ( iTunes / Google Play ) you can actually check into Fort Wilderness on your arrival day and you’ll be notified of your cabin number or campsite when it’s ready. If you’re staying in a Fort Wilderness Cabin, you’ll also use the My Disney Experience app to unlock your cabin door.

Note : if you like, you can also check in at the Outpost and receive standard hotel room keys, but if you don’t want to come in contact with anyone or just want to get to your cabin, use the app for the best experience.

Staying at a Fort Wilderness Cabin

We LOVE the accommodations at the Disney’s Fort Wilderness cabins. There is a ton of space and they’re decorated in a way that’s both purely Disney and wonderfully outdoors. The layout is not enormous, but it’s set up in a way that you can easily fit the six people the cabin sleeps and not get in each other’s way.

There is a well equipped kitchen and dining space, a living area with a pullout sofa bed, a large bathroom, and a bedroom with a queen and twin bunk beds (almost as cool as the bunk beds at the Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser ). Our family of four fit perfectly and loved the setup. There is also a good amount of storage in the bedroom and living room areas, so if you’re doing a week long Disney World trip , you can fully unpack and settle in with ease.

Taylor Family in Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground Cabin Disney World Orlando 3

Fort Wilderness cabins are stocked just like a hotel room would be: toiletries, towels, bedding, television… but POOL TOWELS ARE NOT PROVIDED.

In addition to the interior, the cabins at Fort Wilderness also have great outdoor space. There is a deck with a picnic table AND a barbecue, so cooking and eating outside like you’re actually on a camping trip is totally doable! The cabins also have enough space to park two small/medium cars.

Price Range for Cabins at Fort Wilderness:  nightly rate tends to be in the $400s+ (unless there is a great deal, around $240). They sleep six, so that could be a good deal for a family, but the truly budget-friendly accommodations at Fort Wilderness come in the form of camping options.

When it comes to resort accommodations and budget, Universal Orlando has more budget-friendly accommodations, so if you’ve stayed at Universal’s Endless Summer or Cabana Bay and then you price out Disney World, you may be surprised at the difference. Check out our article about which Orlando vacation is right for you – Disney or Universal

Camping at Fort Wilderness

There are very few places we camp in Florida because of the mosquitoes and alligators, but Fort Wilderness is perfect for it! Yes, it’s in the forest so there are still some bugs and there is definitely wildlife, but there don’t tend to be alligators in the campground.

There are different campsite options at Fort Wilderness:

  • Tent site – up to 2 tents and a campervan
  • RV site – full hookups, up to 60 feet long
  • RV site – premium or preferred up to 50 feet long

Note : there aren’t PULL THROUGH campsites at Fort Wilderness. RV campers need to have good backup skills.

Depending on your need, length of stay and type of camping gear, the prices will vary greatly.  Each of the campsites at Fort Wilderness is equipped with a picnic table and barbecue (just like the cabins).

Because it is a legit campground, you need to pack your normal camping gear like you would for camping in Yosemite or Zion National Park . Although you are indeed staying at a Disney resort, it is still a camping experience. This means that towels and other standard in-room amenities are not provided at campsites.

You’ll also need to leave your campsite secure just like when you’re doing normal camping. There is security on site and they make their patrol rounds, but they can’t be everywhere at once, and security isn’t going to stop and shoo away the squirrels and turkeys that overtake your campsite if you leave food out.

Price Range for Campsites at Fort Wilderness: $106 USD for a tent site to $190 for an RV site, plus tax

Resort Amenities

Yes, Disney’s Fort Wilderness is a full on resort . It is on the value end of things, so the amenities are the top scale of what’s available at Disney World, but they are nice, fun, and easily accessible.

A bonus of staying at Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground is that there is a lot to do on property, so if you’re not going into the parks each day, you can stay occupied or easily relax all around. There are nature trails, walking baths, playgrounds, basketball and volleyball areas, and even shuffleboard.

Pools at Fort Wilderness

There are two pool areas at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground. The pool on Peacock Pass is the smaller, more quiet pool with lounge chairs and bathrooms/changing facilities. Not a ton of visitors hang out here. The other pool is at the Meadow Recreation Area, which is the hub of most activities at Fort Wilderness.

The Meadow Pool and Recreation Area is great for families with  kids of different ages. There is a large swimming pool, a waterslide, a large water playground/splash pad and a big hot tub. Also, there are plenty of lounge chairs, ping pong, poolside games and a snack bar.

Important Note : pool towels ARE NOT provided at either of the Fort Wilderness swimming pools. Just like camping at a state park or national park would require you to bring your own towels for swimming, the Fort Wilderness Resort doesn’t provide them.

Fishing and Paddling at the Resort

Yes, Disney has done everything they can to make Fort Wilderness Resort feel like you’re out camping in a National Park! There are a few places to fish around the property, including the Meadow area. The main fishing area, where you can also rent kayaks or canoes, is at the lake. Paddling routes are restricted, as the lake is connected to the large lagoon area that leads to the Magic Kingdom . There are a lot of boats that use these waterways to transport guests around the resort, so kayaking at Disney World must be approached with caution and adhering to the rules.

Do you need a fishing license to fish at Disney World?

You’d think since you’re fishing on private property that you don’t need a license to fish at Disney World… and it’s true! Whether you’re fishing from one of the docks or doing a guided bass fishing day, you don’t need a Florida fishing license . All fishing is catch and release.

Chip ‘N Dale Campfire Sing-a-long

Another awesome amenity or experience at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground is the Chip ‘N Dale Campfire Sing-a-Long. While it doesn’t happen every day because it’s weather dependent, when it does happen it’s awesome. We love Chip ‘N Dale in our family, so this is a must!

Note : during the pandemic, this experience is NOT happening. It will hopefully be returning in 2022. See more of what’s different during the COVID-19 pandemic at Disney World.

Outdoor Movies and Games at Fort Wilderness

Just like going to camp, there are more fun outdoor activities at Fort Wilderness. Outdoor movie night starts at sunset each night in the Meadow area (weather dependent). Either a Disney Classic or a new release will be shown in the campfire amphitheater. Check with the Outpost for current movies.

Cast member led games also happen around the resort area, again mainly at the Meadow Recreation area. Whether it’s a swimming race in the pool or a ranger led dance party, there always seems to be something happening.

Transportation and Getting Around the Fort

This is the big question we kept getting at our last visit to Fort Wilderness Resort. “How do you get around at Fort Wilderness?” There are a few options for getting around the resort itself: drive, bus, walk, bike or golf cart. Because the resort is set up like an enormous campground, there are lots of connected trails and roads. You can walk through the woods to anywhere you need, including doing a nature trail or the one mile trail to Disney’s Wilderness Lodge.

Bikes are also allowed at the Fort, and actually are a great idea to bring if you’re planning to have lots of hang out and relaxation time. Driving around the Fort Wilderness resort is more complicated. You really only can drive to the Meadow Recreation area or the Outpost. The Settlement, which is where the dining and boat transportation is, doesn’t have parking, so you need to use the resort buses or walk/bike.

Fort Wilderness Golf Carts

We were really fortunate to get to have a golf cart at Fort Wilderness during our last stay. Golf carts can be rented at the outpost, and while it might not seem like a worthwhile cost to incur, having a golf cart makes getting around much easier. Golf carts can go everywhere on property, including places that you cannot drive to in a normal car.

Getting dinner? Drive the golf cart to the Settlement area. Heading to the pool? Hop in the golf cart and part in the carts-only parking area. Visiting one of the parks in the morning? Drive to the shuttle stops and leave your cart there for the day.

Golf Cart Cost per Day:  4 seater carts at $59 + tax, 6 seater carts are $79 + tax (2021)

Shuttles Around the Resort and Parks

One of the great benefits of staying at one of the Disney resorts is the transportation they provide to the parks. You can take the park shuttles from Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground to all four Disney Parks and Disney Springs. Park shuttles start running a half hour before each park opens, and they continue until an hour and a half after the parks have closed.

The park shuttles can be caught at the Outpost Depot. You’ll need to get there though… Drive your car or golf cart to the Outpost parking area and leave it for the day, or catch one of the shuttle buses that continually run throughout the property. Really, even though it might seem inconvenient to hear “Take the shuttle to here and here…” it’s super easy and makes for a low-stress Disney World vacation.

Resort Transportation at Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground Disney World 1

Boat to Magic Kingdom and Wilderness Lodge

Weather dependent, there is also boat transportation from Fort Wilderness to the Magic Kingdom or Disney’s Wilderness Lodge. Walk, bike, drive a golf cart or take a shuttle bus to the marina in the Settlement area for the boats. The GREEN boat is the one that goes to/from Fort Wilderness to the Magic Kingdom, so if you are ending your day and you get on a different color boat, you won’t initially get back to your camp.

Dining Options at Fort Wilderness

Yes, staying in a cabin at Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground means that you can cook your own meals, but it also means you can pick up dinner and bring it back. There are several options on property for food, although for dining you’ll need to be at the Settlement area.

Trail’s End Restaurant: the Best Dining at Fort Wilderness

Trail’s End Restaurant at Fort Wilderness is our top pick of any of the dining we’ve done at any of the Disney World Resort properties. I western style menu with fried chicken, ribs, mashed potatoes, cole slaw, cornbread and salads, it goes perfectly with the campground atmosphere. I really like the family style menu. It’s also the best quality budget dining we’ve had at Disney.

Using either walk-up or Mobile Order and Pay, the service is fairly quick and it’s very easy for a family to show up, order a good meal and then take it back to their cabin or campsite OR to eat at the picnic tables in the Settlement.

Cost:  for just over $30 we had a quality meal for a family of four, with some leftovers

Crockett’s Tavern at Pioneer Hall

A nicer, sit-down restaurant, Crockett’s Tavern at Fort Wilderness is located right next to Trail’s End. Here, there is a full menu, cocktails and a fun saloon atmosphere. If you’d like to dine at Crockett’s you’ll need to get a reservation or arrive early for walk-in seating. It’s popular and around dinner time you can expect to wait at least 40 minutes.

The Hoop De Doo Revue Dinner Show

NOT CURRENTLY RUNNING DURING COVID – If you’ve been to Disneyland then no doubt you’ve happened into the Golden Horseshoe. Once upon a time they did the Golden Horseshoe Revue there in Frontierland and it was magical cowboy fun. The Hoop De Doo Revue is kind of like it and just as fun. Running since 1974, this is a favorite Disney World show.

Dinner is served during the Hoop De Doo Revue so arrive on time and ready for a fun meal! The experience is around 2 hours and certain seating reservations are eligible for the Disney Dining Plan.

Stores at Fort Wilderness

There are a few Trading Posts at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground. One is located at the Meadow, across the creek from the Recreation Area, and the other is located in the Settlement. The Trading Posts are pretty comprehensive, from fun souvenirs and clothing, to everything you need for hosting a cookout at your Fort Wilderness cabin or campsite. They also have alcohol for sale at the Trading Posts.

While you can definitely get the things you need to feed your family at the Trading Posts, the prices are really high (laughably high) and you’re better off to plan your on-site dining and cooking in advance. The stores are helpful in a pinch though.

I hope we’ve answered all of your questions about staying at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground. Really, we can’t express enough how much we love this property.

As always, if you have any questions, please leave a comment or send us a note. Happy traveling!

Our cabins were great. The staff at the front desk check in were terrible. The driver that took us to our cabin was incredible, I think his name was chuck.

Tuesday 11th of January 2022

I'm sorry to hear that! I've had minimal interaction with the front of house cast members at the Fort, but I'm sure every department has people with bad days from time to time. I hope the next visit/interaction is better!

Friday 7th of January 2022

We have stayed at Fort Wilderness 3 times since the mid eighties. One time in a rented Motorhome. We rented from from an Orlando RV Rental company. They delivered it to our campsite, set it up and picked it up when we left. We also checked or tent and sleeping bags on the airlines and tent camped. The third time we drove our Motorhome cross country and camped in style. Fort Wilderness holds a special place in our hearts and memories of some of our best family vacations ever. The refined woodsy environment, the slower pace after a hectic day in the parks and friendly campers and park staff make the fort our family favorite. We are thrilled that life is getting back to normal and we will be circling the wagons again in June. Pricey… yes, but the quality of Disney family camping is priceless!

Saturday 8th of January 2022

I love that! I'm doing some work on our camper right now for a Trip to Fort Wilderness in two months!

Wednesday 15th of September 2021

I'm sorry but this review is not entirely accurate. We just stayed here. The cabins are mostly surrounded by standing water. It feels like you are in the middle of a swamp. The picture you show of a cabin surrounded by green grass is an exception. The cabin we stayed in was dirty and in need of refurbishment.

Thursday 16th of September 2021

I'm sorry to hear that. We did not have that experience at all and went all over the property looking at the different loops and sites. I wonder if living here in Florida, we see the forest with its swampiness and just see it as forest, because that's what our forests are here. Bummer about your cabin. Do you know what number it was or what loop you were on? I know how to submit feeback like that and am happy to.

Camping at Disney World: Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground Guide

Posted on Last updated: May 14, 2024

A complete guide to camping at Disney World, including Fort Wilderness campground prices and camper rental information.

Fort Wilderness Reception Outpost

I stayed in the campsites at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground to get the full camping at Disney World experience and I had a blast. Fort Wilderness is the most affordable way to stay on-property at Disney World.

Here’s what to expect when camping at Disney World plus some tips and tricks for having a great stay!

Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground Overview

Fort Wilderness is one of the three original resorts at Walt Disney World (the others are the Contemporary and the Polynesian).

The resort consists of 799 campsites and 409 cabins on a huge 700-acre wooded plot. Fort Wilderness is wonderfully “undeveloped” when compared to the rest of the Orlando area!

There are four different types of campsites at Fort Wilderness:

  • Tent or Pop-Up Campsite
  • Full Hook-Up Campsite
  • Preferred Campsite
  • Premium Campsite

At each campsite, you’ll find a paved driveway, picnic table, charcoal grill, electricity, and water. Full-Hook-Up, Preferred, and Premium Campsites also have sewer hook-ups.

Fort Wilderness also has multiple restaurants, two pools, playgrounds  and recreation galore!

Fort Wilderness Campground Map

Fort Wilderness Campground Map

As you can probably tell from this map, Fort Wilderness is huge. It consists of 28 loops with campsites and Wilderness Cabins, a check-in building, multiple pools, restaurants, and many other amenities.

It is over a mile from the Check-In building to the other end of the campground. Several internal buses connect the different areas at Fort Wilderness so it is easy to get around.

Tent Camping at Disney World: Fort Wilderness Campsites

camping at disney world tent campsite with picnic table

Each tent site at Fort Wilderness includes a tent pad, grill, electric hook-up, picnic table, and a hose for water.

Wifi is available for free throughout the campground as well!

Empty Tent Campsite at Fort Wilderness Campground

Here is a view of my campsite from the road. The driveway area has plenty of room for a car, pop-up camper, and a golf cart.

The sandy tent area could accommodate two small tents (less then 4-person tents) or one large tent. You can have up to 10 people in each campsite at Fort Wilderness.

I didn’t take a picture of one, but there is a “comfort station” found in each campground loop. This is where you will find the restrooms, sinks, and showers.

The showers in the comfort station were excellent – probably the nicest you’ll experience at any campground!

Camping at Disney: Tent Camping Loops at Fort Wilderness

Fort Wilderness Campground Map with the best camping loops circled

The best loops for tent camping at Fort Wilderness are loops 1500 and 2000. Campsites in these two loops are in the “Tent or Pop-Up Campsites” category. You will be able to choose the campsite category when making a reservation with Disney.

While those tent camping at Fort Wilderness can stay in other categories of campsites (such as Full Hook-up or Preferred sites), you will not have a sandy tent pad in these types of sites. They will have a concrete pad and you likely won’t be able to stake down your tent here.

Fort Wilderness Campground Prices

The rates for tent camping at Fort Wilderness have a wide range depending on your travel dates.

Rates start at $80 per night in August and September . But unless you have a small pop-up with air conditioning, who wants to sleep in a tent in those months?

A better choice is the campground prices starting at $99 per night in January .

I recommend following this link to check out the most up-to-date rates for your trip.

After researching dates, your best bet is to book campsites directly through Disney. I have even seen some campsite discounts offered recently!

Fort Wilderness Camper Rentals

fort wilderness camper rentals

You might be thinking “How in the world would I get an RV to Fort Wilderness and get it set up?”

Fear not – some companies deliver camper rentals to your site and get it all ready for you. It’s almost like showing up at your hotel room, but it is just in the form of an RV.

I recommend renting an RV through RVshare, a popular and reputable site that connects owners with renters. It is like the Airbnb for RVs!

Many owners will deliver the RV to your site at Fort Wilderness for FREE with a minimum stay booked through RVshare.

Fort Wilderness camper rentals are a great way to save money on your Disney World trip. You’ll get to sleep in comfort (most RVs have air conditioning), stay on Disney property with all of the Disney benefits, and get access to the amazing recreation and amenities at Fort Wilderness!

Also, renting a large RV with a living room through RVshare  can be a HUGE money-saver compared to booking multiple rooms at a Disney resort.

Campsites can have up to 10 people so two families can easily share a site and a large RV – some sleep up to 10!

Fort Wilderness Pools

Pool at Fort Wilderness Campground

My campsite was a short walk from the “feature” pool at Fort Wilderness, the Meadow Pool.

Lifeguard watching over the Water slide at Fort Wilderness Campground

It has a fun water play area for kids with a playground, water features, and these two little slides.

people enjoying the pool and large water slide at Fort Wilderness Campground

It also has a waterslide and large hot tub. All of the other “Value” resorts at Disney World do NOT have water play areas, water slides, or hot tubs. Having access to this pool is a huge perk of staying in the campgrounds at Fort Wilderness!

There is a quick service dining location right next to the Meadow Pool. I grabbed some nachos here for lunch that were really good. I was able to get refills on my refillable mug here, too.

Fort Wilderness Dining

Many people’s first visit to Fort Wilderness is to experience the famous Hoop Dee Do Revue dinner show. It is a favorite of many guests and is found at the back of Fort Wilderness in Pioneer Hall.

Trail's End Restaurant Entrance Sign

Connected to Pioneer Hall is a dining hidden gem, Trail’s End. This is a quick service restaurant that serves some of the same food as Hoop De Doo but as a significant discount. It serves up delicious food for breakfast (til noon) and dinner. Check out the menu and current prices here.

You can even get quick service fare from Trail’s End at PJ’s Southern Takeout right next door. This is where I was able to get my refillable mug to use on the dining plan.

Crockett’s Tavern is a walk-up window right next to Trail’s End where you can order drinks and enjoy them on the porch.

Fort Wilderness Attractions & Recreation

5 White ponies eating out of a trough

There is so much to do at Fort Wilderness, you could spend your entire vacation there and not even go to the theme parks! I was really excited about seeing Cinderella’s ponies that live at the Tri-Circle D Ranch near Pioneer Hall. Aren’t they adorable?

All of the other horses that work around Walt Disney World live at the ranch as well. You can walk through the horse barn and learn about each horse.

There is a small exhibit and Walt Disney and horses that is nice for fellow horse lovers.

At the Tri-Circle D Ranch you can pay for pony rides for little ones, as well as experience wagon and carriage ride within the rustic beauty of the grounds of Fort Wilderness.  For all the up to date times and pricing on these amenities follow this link!

There is an internal bus system at Fort Wilderness due to its size. It might seem complicated at first but is easy to use once you get the hang of it.

The internal buses can take you to the Outpost at the front of the resort to catch buses to Epcot, Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom, and Disney Springs.

The internal buses can also take you to the Settlement Depot. A short walk away are the docks with boat service to Magic Kingdom on the green flag boats.

Camping at Disney World Tips & Tricks

There is a nightly campfire with free marshmallow roasting in the Meadow area. Chip & Dale make an appearance at the event and lead a sing-a-long! Get the time for this when you check-in (seasonally).

After the campfire there is a “Movie Under The Stars” shown every night.

You will need to bring your own towels to the pool at Fort Wilderness, unlike other Disney resorts where they are provided.

Don’t forget mosquito repellent for your stay!

You can see the Electric Water Pageant from the beach at Fort Wilderness.

Be sure to bring an outdoor extension cord to charge your devices inside your tent. I brought one and was so glad I did.

It will likely rain during your stay so be sure to have a tent with a rain fly that extends down to the ground.

The sandy material in the tent pads WILL get into your tent. Bring along a small dustpan and brush to keep your tent clean.

Disney World campsites are affordable, but if you’d rather stay in a hotel room, check out my guide to the best Disney Value resorts here .

Great review. Question: Can you camp at Ft Wilderness without tickets to any of the other Disney attractions?

Hi Mark! Yes you can definitely camp at Ft Wilderness without visiting the theme parks. No tickets are required.

Fort Wilderness Resort Campground Review

disney camping trip

Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground is an actual campground with both campsites and cabins at Walt Disney World. This review features photos of the both, the dining options and other amenities, and thoughts on the experience of staying at Fort Wilderness.

The overhaul of the Fort Wilderness Cabins is entirely complete (we’ll get to that below). We’ve stayed at Fort Wilderness several times, and this review covers our experiences over the course of our vacations at Fort Wilderness, mostly in anecdotal form.

Fort Wilderness really is an experience , one that feels unlike any other resort at Walt Disney World. If you didn’t know any better, you wouldn’t realize you were just outside of a theme park. Not only is the “resort” isolated from the rest of Walt Disney World, but it’s also largely untouched and under-developed. It also offers a wealth of outdoor recreational activities and perks you won’t find anywhere else at Walt Disney World. With that said, Fort Wilderness definitely is not for everyone…

When I was young, my parents and I used to stay at Fort Wilderness in our camper. The few memories that I could recall from Fort Wilderness are good ones. I remember getting a Dale (dressed in his Chip ‘N’ Dale Hawaiian shirt) plush on one of our first trips there at the Outpost, going to the Hoop De Doo Revue a couple of times, and swimming at River Country, but that’s about it. However, I hadn’t even visited there in roughly 15 years prior to booking a return trip.

When Sarah and I first stayed at Fort Wilderness, we didn’t book it because of my fond memories, but rather, for lack of a better option. By the time we went to book a room, none of the Value Resorts had discounted rooms, and for only $20 more per night, we could do a Fort Wilderness Cabin. Why not, we thought?

My biggest concern initially was the internal bus routes at Fort Wilderness, as we have heard that they can make getting to and from Walt Disney World’s theme parks a pain. After that first trip, I reported back that my concerns were unfounded…

After subsequent stays at Fort Wilderness (and visits there to eat), I think it’s a bit more complicated and at least in part depends upon where you’re staying within the resort, to which park you’re headed, and when you return.

During our most recent stay at the Fort Wilderness Cabins, we were reminded of how frustrating its transportation can be. There are 3 internal bus routes that deliver guests to the front and back of the the resort, with buses departing from the front to take guests to the parks, and boats departing from the back (Settlement) to take guests to Magic Kingdom (and other Bay Lake resorts).

This might not seem bad as a twice-per-day thing, but the resort is so spread out that a bus is also necessary if you want to eat, shop, or swim. The internal bus route is about as efficient as it can be, and although it can be a bit quirky and initially confusing, it gets the job done. Over the course of a week-long trip, though, that extra time can add up–and can get old.

However, this is the price you pay for the seclusion Fort Wilderness offers: it’s a necessary evil if you want this level of spaciousness and seclusion. I don’t think it’s possible to have it both ways, and given the situation, the Fort Wilderness bus routes are very workable. With that said, the spread out nature of the resort is also why so many Fort Wilderness guests rent golf carts.

disney camping trip

Likewise, the marina transportation was quick and enjoyable. The smaller boats that transported guests to the Contemporary and Magic Kingdom showed up promptly and provided an enjoyable and unique method of getting from Fort Wilderness to the Magic Kingdom.

Taking a boat from Fort Wilderness is such a great and relaxing form of transportation. Although it’s not technically an “attraction,” this is one of my favorite attractions at Walt Disney World.

disney camping trip

The entertainment and recreational offerings at Fort Wilderness are robust. I’d say the daily slate of entertainment at Fort Wilderness is better than any other resort at Walt Disney World. There are numerous paid offerings, from fishing to archery classes to boating, and more.

There’s also a lot you can do for free. From nature trails to the Electrical Water Pageant to campfires (I’m probably forgetting a lot), there’s a ton to do. Most notable among these is Chip ‘n’ Dale’s Campfire Sing-Along, which is a nightly campfire show that occurs at 7 or 8 p.m., depending upon the season.

There’s also the petting zoo at the Tri-Circle-D ranch, and the Settlement Trading Post, which sells is your typical gift shop/grocery location.

DSC_1376 copy

If you’re looking to rent a recreational option, the Meadows Recreation Area has a bike barn and the Fort Wilderness waterways and bicycle trails. You can also swim, and play tennis or volleyball at the complex.

Fort Wilderness also contains one of the hidden gems of Walt Disney World: Trail’s End Restaurant. This is an all-you-cant eat (although it has tested an a la carte menu at times) cafeteria found in Pioneer Hall. We already have reviews of the Trail’s End Breakfast Buffet and the Trail’s End Dinner Buffet , and we’re working on one for brunch (spoiler: like the other meals, it’s also awesome).

Speaking of awesome, Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue is a staple of Walt Disney World dining entertainment, and we think it’s a must-do. This long-running show has been entertaining guests for four-plus decades, and many families return again and again. I loved Hoop Dee Doo Musical Revue as a kid, and I still love it as an adult .

disney camping trip

The cabins were recently overhauled, and we have a comprehensive look at what was changed–including improvements and downgrades–in our new Cabins at Fort Wilderness Review . Suffice to say, these cabins feature a full kitchen, living room (that doubles as a bedroom), and bedroom with queen bed and bunkbeds.

The cabins sleep 6 plus infants in a crib, but sleeping 6 adults comfortably would be quite a feat. Uncomfortably, you could probably sleep 8 people in one of these bad boys.

disney camping trip

I’m not really sure what to say about the camp-sites, other than “they exist.” Actually, there’s quite a bit more to know. There are roughly 800 campsites at Fort Wilderness spread out across 20 loops. These campsites are secluded from one another by an overgrowth of brush and trees.

Campsites are back-ins with a combination of paved driveway and sandy pad. Each site is ~25 feet wide and includes a picnic table, charcoal grill, electricity, and water hookups. There are four categories of campsites at Fort Wilderness: premium (big rig-friendly), preferred (better location), full-hookup (includes sewer), and partial (ideal for tents).

DSC_1397 as Smart Object-1 copy

There are 15 comfort stations located throughout Fort Wilderness Campground. Some loops have their own comfort station and some of the smaller loops share a centrally located station. They’re all relatively convenient to access.

One final note on the campground front: at Christmas-time, campers go wild decorating their campsites and golf carts at Fort Wilderness with all sorts of displays. (Hence the above photo, which otherwise might seem random.) It’s pretty cool to see, even if you’re not staying at Fort Wilderness.

DSC_1333 as Smart Object-1 copy

One of my favorite things to do at Fort Wilderness is get up early and walk to the marina (no matter where we’re staying) to watch the sunrise. This early morning walk of the resort is a great experience, and really made me appreciate the place all the more. It’s so tranquil and undeveloped, and in many ways, still retains a lot of the charm of old school Walt Disney World.

It’s almost as if Fort Wilderness Campground is “off the grid” and hasn’t been victim to as many of the changes made that have sanitized and made some of the other original ‘Vacation Kingdom of the World’ resorts less endearing.

While I would definitely stay at Fort Wilderness again soon at the opportunity, it’s definitely someplace where we’ll stay when we have kids. I look forward to our kids enjoying playing at the playground, fishing, and enjoying other things like the Campfire Sing Along with Chip & Dale.

To me, it seems Fort Wilderness offers more for young children to explore than many of the other resorts at which we stayed. In an era when entertainment for kids primarily occurs in front of an LCD screen, Fort Wilderness is a breath of fresh air.

DSC_1353 copy

Overall, Fort Wilderness Campground is a breath of fresh air if you’re looking for somewhere at Walt Disney World that is totally different and lacking the same amount of hustle and bustle as the theme parks. If you want somewhere to stay that will balance out the chaos of the theme parks, or if you just want to get in touch with nature, Fort Wilderness is an exceptional option.

The amenities and entertainment are wonderful, cabins are really well done, and camping at Walt Disney World is a unique experience. My only real quibble is the transportation system, but even that is about as good as it can be considering the nature of the resort. I would not hesitate to book a stay at Fort Wilderness if a more rustic setting appeals to your party. It’s unlike anywhere else at Walt Disney World, and is a great way to shout SERENITY NOW! and get away from it all.

Disney Fort Wilderness is amazing however for the price you have to pay, you can’t give your kids the vacation you had as a child because you’ll go broke….. the last two times we were there, the trees were so low they scraped the top of the RV. Had to complain in order the put us somewhere big rigs were capable of pulling through without knocking your AC off. For the money you pay you think that would be cleared enough then I have this problem. That is the money issue. They raise the rates so high during enjoyable times when the kids are not in school that you can afford to go there it’s sickening that a little bit of magic that you can provide for children nowadays is being stolen away by a empire made solely to provide children with a magical experience. Somebody needs to do something to reverse this to the way it used to be!

' src=

We love Fort Wilderness! We rent a camper from Escape RV Rental and have it delivered. The pool is great, and the nightly fireworks are the best part!

' src=

Great review! We stayed here about a year ago, and it was fantastic. To help out, I have seen some questions.

Golf carts – super easy, not very expensive (around $60/day). This was a def must for us. It made getting around easy. Furthermore, there is dedicated golf cart parking everywhere. It was at the bus stop (though we would recommend the boat stop for Magic Kingdom. you can either take it straight to MK or take it to the Grand Floridian or Contemporary and walk). I know $60/day can seem like a lot, but it made the vacay special. Early morning and late evening golf cart rides were beautiful. Felt like a National Park, not a resort. I would highly recommend.

Boats – One of the best things about this area. If you have a golf cart, you can easily get a early ride and make rope drop. Furthermore, the buses run early and regularly to the other parks. We made rope drop easily for Animal Kingdom (had only a 1.5 hr wait for Flight of Passage) and Hollywood Studios (we got a morning boarding group for Rise of the Resistance). The boats also made it super easy for getting to Wilderness lodge (walked around and used their snack shop/bakery), the Poly, and the Grand Floridian (walked around and ate dinners at both). Also the boat rides were just relaxing and fun. Many times, especially in the evening we were the only ones on the boat. It was special and an enjoyable way to end out the day.

Hi Tom, would you consider updating this post? We are staying for the first time at the campgrounds soon and I have a few questions. First, do the boats and busses leave early enough to arrive to parks before opening or should I rely on Uber? Also, what is open and running as the restaurants and amenities due to Covid? Thanks!

' src=

I would love to know if our golf cart can be driven and left at the bus stop while we go to the parks? This will be our first trip to Fort Wilderness in February.

' src=

Tom, do you have a recommendation for renting an RV at Fort Wilderness.

' src=

Hey Tom, Thanks for the review. I have a dilemma hoping you or one of your lovely readers can help me out. I currently have a room at Wilderness Lodge booked for the 11/25/2020-12/5/2020. I was so looking forward to enjoying the decorations at WL but I think I need to come to peace with the fact that its not going to open back up this year. So now I need to find a new resort. I have no idea what Disney is going to offer me when I call, and I really dont want to stay somewhere I’m not going to like (this year has been crappy enough) so I’m trying to think ahead to see what other options are in my current budget in case Disney doesn’t offer me an option im ok with. The cabins came up (under budget!). I’ve never stayed at them, actually we mostly just stay in the suites at AofA but between the big blue pool scheduled for refurbishment, and wanting to stay somewhere with a more holiday feel I really dont know where else to go. We have 2 young kids (7 and 4) and we are driving so we will have our car. I’m not a nature person at all, but my husband is. Do you think they will still be a good fit for us? Thoughts on pros/cons.

' src=

do the kitchens have utensils/ plates etc…

' src=

Everything you need is supplied in the kitchen.

' src=

We stayed at the cabins at fort wilderness for the first time this week, and absolutely loved it! Only a few times I wished we had rented a golf cart – but honestly we never had to wait very long for a bus to swing by. I think I would have regretted spending money on a cart. As far your quibbles with the inconvenient transportation system – I think it is worth noting two things:

1. You are able to park your own car right beside your own cabin. 2. As a resort guest, you have free parking at all the theme parks.

I know that only applies to guests who drive to Disney, and not fly. But we found it to be incredibly convenient, especially as early morning “rope-droppers”.

' src=

We always stay at the cabins! It is a great place, but you really need to know “how” to stay there in order to enjoy it. Unless you want to walk a few extra miles a day your really do need to invest in the electric cart. With long days in the park, I do not want to wear me kids out even before we get onto the bus. The grounds itself has at least a days worth of stuff to do. We always have an off day and hangout at the campground. Riding ponies, swimming, chip n dales movie, crafts etc….

' src=

Do they still have the roosters crowing at sunrise? Because as a kid I would have liked to have strangled them.

' src=

Very sad lost my camera at fort wilderness 2-8-18 in ladies room would just like my camera card and ids that were in case back keep the camera I can’t believe people can be so selfish

' src=

We love “the fort” Stayed once and coming in May 18 for our sixth visit WDW.We drive our rig from MN but it’s still cheaper than a regular room.We eat our meals in our camper and save a lot of money!! It’s just a great way to go.

' src=

While this might have already been mentioned by another reader, it doesn’t hurt to reiterate how awesome the comfort stations are at the campground! As a member of a family of avid campers, the state of the bathroom and shower houses is definitely important. Fort Wilderness, by far, had the cleanest comfort station of any I have been to. The cast members at this campground work hard to make a trip to the shower something to enjoy instead of something you dread. No idea how they keep the central Florida bugs from lurking inside. Looking forward to our next trip in a couple of weeks.

The Fort Wilderness Campsites isn’t your typical campground, but one that ensures guests still experience that Disney magic.

From fully-equipped campsites, to pools, to golf cart rentals, to unique recreation and activities, to special dining, to unforgettable entertainment, the campsites provide all kinds of amenities. There’s even 750 acres of pine and cypress forest.

What makes the campsites even more special is that during special occasions camps will decorate (like for Halloween and Christmas). Some of them are quite impressive and elaborate!

As for the campsites, there are different types available. Keep reading for more details about the moderate resort.

Guest Rooms And Bathrooms

When it comes to rooms and bathroom, well, that all depends what kind of camping you’re doing.

There are five different types of campsites that accommodate tents and 45-foot and longer RVs, with a maximum of 10 guests per site.

Each campsite comes with landscaping that provides privacy, water, cable television, electrical hookups, picnic table, and a charcoal grill. Most campsites also have a sewer hook-up and even permit pets. Other amenities include free WiFi and a safe deposit box (upon request).

Here are the campsites and what they accommodate:

Pet-Friendly Policy

As previously mentioned, the Campsites are pet-friendly , but there are certain conditions that must be met.

First and foremost, you must keep pets on a handheld leash that is 8 feet or shorter. When not on a leash, pets must be confined inside a climate-controlled vehicle. Note: pets are not permitted in tents and pop-up campers.

Those who have pet privileges are allowed to take dogs to play at the Waggin’ Trails Dog Park, an off-leash area, or walk them on the several on-leash trails. There’s also day and overnight kennel care at Best Friends Pet Care located on property.

There is a $5 per-night pet fee for those who bring their pets to the Campsites.

Checking In And Out

There are a few options for checking in and checking out when staying at the Campsites. There is a Reception Outpost, but rather than going inside to check-in, guests with RVs or tents will register at one of the drive-through windows at the Outpost.

Those staying at the Campsites can also use online check-in through the official Walt Disney World website or via the My Disney Experience app.

Fort Wilderness Cabins reception outpost

Online check-in also allows guests to request their preference of camping loop, but a request isn’t guaranteed. You can also speak with Front Desk Services. During registration, guests will be directed to their designated campsite.

Currently, guests will automatically be checked out. But, if you have unresolved charges to your hotel folio, you’ll need to visit the front desk in the Reception Outpost.

Note: Guests also have the option of to chat virtually with resort Cast Members via MDE for any assistance.

The pickup and dropoff location for  Mears Connect  (which is the replacement for Magical Express) and bus transportation are out front at the Outpost Depot near the Reception Outpost. Be sure to check with the resort to see if luggage storage services are available.

Note: Resort Airline Check-In and Magical Express are no longer available.

Package Delivery & Pick Up

You can have packages and groceries delivered to your Disney Resort hotel, along with shipping select items home.

  • Learn more about shipping packages to and from Walt Disney World

Disney used to have a service where you were able to purchase items in the parks and then have them delivered to your resort’s gift shop. However, that service has been unavailable for several years now.

Parking is available at the Campsites, but it’s works a bit differently than a resort, especially since you will park at your campsite rather than in an actual parking lot.

Each campsite has one complimentary parking space for one motorized vehicle.

Complimentary standard self-parking is available for non-resort guests exploring dining, shopping, entertainment, and other experiences during the day.

We have a complete  Walt Disney World parking guide you can also check out.

As for buses, the Outpost Depot is the main bus depot that will take guests to theme parks, water parks, Disney Resort hotels, and the Disney Springs area. Camping at Walt Disney World- Everything You Need to Know

Camping at Walt Disney World- Everything You Need to Know

For travelers with tents and pop-up campers, this is the best option.  The slab size 10′ x 25′ is can accommodate a camper or pop-up plus up to two tents.

Transportation to Disney World

disney world water launch boat

Launch Boats at Walt Disney World

The closest theme park to Fort Wilderness Resort and Campgrounds is Magic Kingdom either by watercraft or bus.  Dependent on where you are staying within the campground, one might be faster than the other.

Launch Boats

Bay Lake separates Fort Wilderness camping area from Magic Kingdom and the grandeur hotels—Disney's Grand Floridian Resort and Spa, Disney's Contemporary Resort, Disney's Polynesian Village Resort.  There are several launch boats you can catch at Fort Wilderness area that will take you directly or indirectly to the theme park.  The red launch will take you directly from Fort Wilderness to Magic Kingdom.  The blue launch stops at Fort Wilderness, Wilderness Lodge, and Contemporary Resort where you can get off then take the monorail over to the theme park.  This is a fun alternative with younger guests.  Once at Magic Kingdom, the transit system can get you to the other theme parks.

The actual size of Fort Wilderness Resort and Campgrounds is quite large—roughly a mile long and half-mile wide.  That's a lot of walking.  However, the complimentary camp bus can pick you up at your site and take you to Outpost Depot to catch a theme park bus there (or the water taxi).  Note however that if you plan on getting to a resort early for rope drop, you'll need to know that it can take up to 30 minutes to get to any of the theme parks via bus.

Camping Options Outside the Resort

koa campgrounds orlando

KOA Campgrounds

The Orlando area KOA Campgrounds is a perfect location for families wanting to camp while exploring the Orlando area. What to Bring for Camping at Walt Disney World

Mickey Minnie and Goofy camping at Walt Disney World

If camping is on your list when visiting Walt Disney World, you'll need a few secondary lists. Aside from your personal packing list, a Disney packing list and the camping essentials guide might be helpful as well. Unless you're a novice, most campers are repeat adventurers and have an idea of what to bring but in case you may need a list or two, here are some suggestions for you and your group.

Plan Your Camping at Walt Disney World List

Everyone has a routine including when packing for vacation. I don't follow a list while my husband prints one out a week prior to a trip.  I write out a small list for each of my kids so they can personalize their own trip. The basics for any vacation are clothing, toiletries, outwear, shoes/socks, pajamas, and swimwear. I'd suggest layers depending on what time of year you decide to visit Orlando; evenings could be cooler  Oh, and don't forget to add in any Disney or Mickey-themed accessories or clothing. Many families will even create matching t-shirts for the group.  Etsy has several vendors who can personalize Disney orders. Valuables such as money, travelers' checks, ATM cards, and theme park tickets should be with one designated person to avoid confusion.

Plan for the Parks

Visiting any theme park can be magical and memorable but even more so when you are prepared. Make sure you have what you need before you enter any of the theme parks. If you do forget any sundries, several of the merchandise locations carry the extras.

PACKING LIST 101: Sunscreen, rain ponchos (a must for Florida), water bottles, hats, lip balm, camera/phone, camera batteries/phone charger, hand sanitizer, lotion, first aid supplies such as bandaids and pain reliever, snacks, and even an extra pair of socks/shoes.  For more information, MickeyVisit has a detailed list to help you plan.

Campsite Packing List

Ah, the joys of camping but sometimes that necessity which didn't get packed can turn your relaxing vacation into a stressful one. Everyone has a different camping style whether bare-bones and in a tent or hooked-up to wi-fi and chilling in an air-conditioned RV. Either way, there are some essentials every camper needs.

CAMPING LIST 101: Flashlight/headlamp (+ batteries), lantern, bug repellent, ropes, charcoal, trashbags, rags/paper towels, matches, camping stove (+ fuel), pots/pans/utensils, bins for washing eating ware, dish soap, extra batteries, hand sanitizer, toilet paper/Kleenex, and of course- s'mores supplies! Again, dependent on how your camping style is, the list can be altered to your liking.

Camping at Disney World: Tips for a Magical Stay

Chelsea Day | Camping | Updated: Jul 20, 2021 Jul 20, 2021

Did you know that you can go camping at Disney World? That's right, the adventure opportunities abound! Here are our fave picks for some added outdoor fun when you visit the parks.

Camping at Disney World

We just got back from our most recent Florida vacation, and man, it was a blast! We spent the first half of our vacation road tripping from Pensacola to Jacksonville and Space Coast, checking out some of the most beautiful hotels in the state. Winding up at familiar Disney World felt like coming home and was the perfect end to our trip. Instead of checking into one of the usual resort hotels, however, we decided to experience camping at Disney World's epic Fort Wilderness.

Fort Wilderness: Get the Lay of the Land

Fort Wilderness is like any other Walt Disney World resort in that they have their own designated check-in, amenities and activities available for guests. Instead of traditional hotel rooms, however, they have different types of camping for whatever floats your boat: cabins, RVs, and traditional tent sites.

Before booking any site, it is crucial to understand that Fort Wilderness is HUGE. It has 21 camping loops with 10-85 sites, plus seven loops with cabins. Definitely look at the map when selecting your site type to increase your likelihood of being near amenities you're most interested in. The majority of the cabins ( all except two near the marina ) are located closer to the entrance by the quieter Wilderness Swimmin' Pool, which does not have a slide like the rowdier, more central Meadow Swimmin' Pool.

With that said, there are buses that come through occasionally to transport people between the various areas. Alternately, I would recommend using a scooter or renting a golf cart or bike to tootle around. Car parking is available at your site, but parking is generally limited to golf carts and bike racks at the various trading posts, snack shops, restaurants and pools. Uber can't get through the check-in gates, so that's not an option.

Types of Camping at Disney World

A camping trip to Disney World offers an opportunity to explore nature, get some exercise, and get up close with animals. All camping at Disney World happens in the designated backcountry retreat called Fort Wilderness, where every camping and RV site can hold 10 people and every cabin can hold 6!

Tent Camping in Style at Disney World

Camping in style has never been easier. Imagine waking up to the melody of nature and the sound of Disney tunes, all in the comfort of your tent. Every campsite has landscaping that encourages a feeling of privacy and seclusion, and they also include water, cable TV, electrical hook-ups, a picnic table and a grill.

Tent or Pop-Up sites have room for a camper pop-up and up to two tents on a concrete pad up to 10 feet by 25 feet. If you don't want to set a tent up, you can even call and rent one from Disney !

Camping with your own RV at Disney World

Great news for Disney World-goers. The next time you're planning a family trip to the popular theme park, you can bring your own RV! The campgrounds are open to those with their own rigs, including motor homes and pull-behinds. Premium and Premium Meadow campsites have concrete pads up to 18×60 feet, Preferred campsites are close to the marina and have concrete pads up to 10×45 feet, and standard RV spots (called “Full Hook-Up Campsites”) have concrete pads up to 10×50 feet.

Cabin at Fort Wilderness

Beautiful Cabins at Disney World

Disney World is a place where children and adults can escape into a fantasy world – a world of imagination, excitement, and joy. In my opinion, the best place to sleep in the midst of this magic is at one of the cabins at Fort Wilderness. These cabins give visitors a chance to experience the same type of cozy accommodations they usually experience at Disney World, but with a rugged camp vibe.

All cabins are the same size, with a fully-equipped kitchen and dining table, bathroom, a pull-out sleeper couch in the living room, and a bedroom with a bunk bed and a queen-sized bed. A large private patio and charcoal grill are outside, and cabin guests have the option to pre-order groceries to their room before they arrive.

Benefits of Camping at Disney World

Camping at Disney World comes with all the same amenities as the resort hotels: Early Theme Park Entry ( this program is currently in flux and subject to changes ), proximity, transportation to and from the parks, a fully immersive experience, discounted pre-arrival MagicBand purchases, and more.

Being big-time campers ourselves , the opportunity to merge our favorite activities with Disney is mind-blowing! Imagine campfire fun, tie-dying shirts, panning for gems, horseback riding, archery, canoeing, fishing AND Disney magic all rolled into one. All in the same day. Dream vacation achievement, unlocked.

Finally, I think the biggest benefit of staying at Fort Wilderness is the strong camaraderie among the guests. Just like on a Disney Cruise , guests at Fort Wilderness go all out with decorations, and many families return year after year.

Dogs at Fort Wilderness

Two dogs are allowed per campsite, for an additional fee, in designated loops. Two dogs are also allowed per cabin, for an additional fee, in specified cabins. Walt Disney World has paid kennel care options, an off-leash dog park at Fort Wilderness and lots of on-leash trails available.

How to Prepare for Disney World Camping

Pack Your Gear

This will vary wildly depending on your accommodations. If you're booking a cabin or bringing your RV, you'll have everything you need. If you're staying in a tent site, you'll want to have sleeping bags and a camp stove. It's a great idea to bring food and snacks no matter what site type you choose, to help cut down on meal costs.

Tie dying shirts at camp

Golf Cart Rentals at Fort Wilderness

If you want to book a golf cart rental for your time at Fort Wilderness, make reservations as early as possible by calling the number on Disney's site . Most golf cart rentals are 4-seaters, but there are a few 6-seaters available that are first-come first-served. You can go ahead and get on the list for a 4-seater, and cancel your reservation if you need a 6-seater and there are none available when you arrive. That said, I've seen more than 4 people squish into the 4-seaters when necessary.

Rentals are available for pickup at 1pm and need to be returned by 11am on the return date. Since we nabbed a coveted 6-seater on our trip, we opted to rent it for the duration of our stay to make transportation easy, and to ensure that someone didn't nab it if we returned it for a day ( again, 6-seaters are first-come first-served so there are no guarantees it'll be there for a subsequent day if you give it back ).

Reserve Dining and Theme Park Tickets

With limited capacity, it's critical that you go ahead and reserve your dining and theme park tickets as early as possible before arrival. This can be done in your MyDisneyExperience online account. Try to make reservations for your must-see dining spots at the various parks you'll be visiting, as well as any specialty dining experiences you want to enjoy such as viewing wild animals while you dine at Sanaa over at Animal Kingdom Lodge.

Fort Wilderness patio

Consider Transportation

I feel like I'm harping on this point, but Fort Wilderness is big and Walt Disney World overall is HUGE. Search online for the various transportation solutions that go from Fort Wilderness to your desired theme parks. There's a boat that goes between Magic Kingdom and Fort Wilderness ( it's magical! ) but getting to any other resort or park will require boat transfers and/or buses and/or the monorail.

You can also keep a vehicle at your Fort Wilderness lodging and drive to any of the parks' designated parking lots: the self-parking fee you pay at Fort Wilderness gives you rights to park in any Disney lot. Keep in mind that while you can park at other Disney resorts to visit, there are often limitations on time and/or reservations must be made at one of the restaurants, particularly at the more popular resorts such as The Contemporary. Don't think you can mosy your car on over to the Contemporary's lot and walk to Magic Kingdom, leaving your car there the entire day. They'll tow you. You may be able to use valet if you have a breakfast reservation at another resort and want to leave your vehicle there for longer than 3 hours, but valet parking may be limited at times.

How to Choose the Best Camping Spot at Fort Wilderness

This will all come down to personal preference. Do you prioritize ease-of-access to the parks? Then you'll definitely want to be near the marina. That's where we landed and we appreciated our proximity to the stable and other recreation near Pioneer Hall, and the ease of visiting Settlement Trading Post for supplies. If you prefer to spend a lot of time at the pool and enjoying camp activities, Meadow is definitely where you'll want to land.

Fort Wilderness Activities

Fishing at Disney World

Fishing at Fort Wilderness

This was our favorite activity of the whole trip, and we're writing a whole separate blog post dedicated to the experience. Thanks to Disney's partnership with Take Me Fishing , you can make reservations for guided fishing excursions! Up to five guests can fit on a 21-foot Sun Tracker pontoon boat, or if you have a smaller group, they have tournament-style NITRO bass fishing boats that can fit one or 2 guests. Excursions are either 2 or 4 hours, and an extra hour can be added in-person at the Marina. Excursions include a guide, rod and reels, tackle, bait and non-alcoholic beverages.

If you want a self-led experience, motorized boats, canoe and kayaks are available to rent on a first-come, first-served basis.

Meadow Swimmin Pool

Swimming at Fort Wilderness

The main pool is the Meadow Swimmin' Pool. It's right in the center of Fort Wilderness near all the action at Meadow Trading Post, and it features a 67-foot waterslide! There's also a hot tub here, a little-kid-friendly play area, and a snack shop. The quieter Wilderness Swimmin' Pool is closer to the cabins. It also has a hot tub, but doesn't have any splash play areas or slides. Unlike most Disney resort pools, the pools at Fort Wilderness do NOT offer towels to guests, so bring your own!

Hiking at Fort Wilderness

There are miles and miles of trails waiting to be explored here! You can hit the trails with your hiking boots, or rent a bike at the Bike Barn. You may also want to hit up the playgrounds, volleyball nets and basketball courts that are interspersed throughout Fort Wilderness.

Pony ride at Fort Wilderness

Horseback Riding at Fort Wilderness

Guests can book 45-minute trail rides by calling in advance or walking into the front barn . Riders need to be over 48 inches tall and weigh less than 250 pounds.

Pony rides are also available at Tri-Circle-D Ranch near Pioneer Hall on a walk-in basis for children over age 2, under 80 pounds and no taller than 48 inches. Parents get to walk with their children, leading the ponies around a big loop. Even if nobody in your party fits within those size limits, it's absolutely worth visiting this area to see the Disney horses that clip-clop up and down Main Street!

Other Recreational Experiences at Fort Wilderness

Watch a movie under the stars, roast s'mores with Chip and Dale, tie-dye shirts, go rock-hunting and more. You can call ahead or visit the Bike Barn during your visit: that's the go-to spot for making reservations for all sorts of family-friendly camp memories. Guests age 7 and up can also learn to use a compound bow during an archery lesson! The Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue is a fun dinner party extravaganza that guests rave about as well, but it's currently on hiatus. There are also wilderness arcades at Pioneer Hall and near the Meadow Swimmin' Pool

Who is Fort Wilderness Ideally-Suited For?

– Budget Traveler: someone who is looking for a cheaper way to experience Disney World. Fort Wilderness has something for every budget.

– Families: Want to be able to spend time with loved ones and enjoy the parks without feeling rushed? Fort Wilderness' laid-back vibe will float your boat. Particularly if you have older teens who have seen it all ( or wee ones who need a little extra room to roam ), this is the perfectly fit for big groups.

– Disney-Only Camper: Maybe you're not necessarily an outdoorsy person, but you love Disney so much you're willing to try camping in order to stretch your time at the parks.

– Disney Superfan: We all know one of these! The all-Disney-all-the-time person is a die-hard Disney World fan who needs to experience  everything  the parks have to offer. Campign at Disney World is absolutely on their bucket list.

Camping at Disney World FAQs

  • How far in advance should I book my campsite at Disney World? Book as far as possible in advance for the best site options! Fort Wilderness absolutely does sell out in advance, particularly during busy seasons.
  • Can you bring a pet on a camping trip to Disney World? Yup! Two dogs are allowed per site, with arrangements made in advance and additional fees.
  • When is the best time to visit Disney World for campers? I like to visit between February and May, when the weather is relatively mild, prices are pretty low, and the area isn't as crowded as it is during summer. September and October tend to be extremely rainy, which can make camping challenging.
  • What should I pack for my Disney World camping trip? All the usual stuff that you’d bring camping is a great idea for camping at Disney World. Sunscreen, bug spray and ponchos are a must-have. Beyond that, anything you want! Just like when packing for a Disney Cruise , don't forget to bring Disney-specific gear such as stuffed animals, Disneybounding props, games, etc.

Have you been camping at Disney World yet? If not, pack your tent and sleeping bag, and get ready for a whole new way to experience the magic!

Planning a Disney Camping Trip

disney camping trip

Since we love to add a bit of Disney to our life whenever we can, we decided to come up with this handy guide to bringing Disney to your camping adventures.

Even though it’s cold at the moment, with spring on the way, now is the time to start planning those spring and summer trips, to make sure you are ready when the warmer weather arrives! That way, once the longer days and warm temperatures hit, you will be prepared and ready to skip off on an adventure, soaking up as much fun as possible. One of the best ways to do this, is with a camping trip – so why not go camping, #DisneyStyle?

Camping can take place in the wood, on the beach – even in your backyard, and can be as simple, or as fancy as you like. While some like to fish and cook damper over hot coals, others like to bring all the comforts of home which might include a barbecue, gas stove, or full kitchen inside a caravan or motorhome. Whether you like to pitch a tent in the mountains, or are more of ‘glamping’ on a campsite person, one thing is certain – you will make amazing memories and have an unforgettable time – especially if you incorporate a little Disney!

So, whether you choose to camp at Disney World’s very own camping ground, grab some Disney themed gear and hit a regular campground, or camp in your backyard while having a Disney-filled week, these tips will tell you everything you need to know about having a Disney camping adventure that you will never forget.

Camp at Disneyworld

disney camping trip

While Disneyworld might not be the place you would normally think of to go camping, Disney has created an amazing campground in Orlando called Fort Wilderness. Opened in 1971, shortly after Walt Disney World opened its gates, Fort Wilderness allows campers to enjoy the great outdoors while also experiencing the magic of a Disney Park!

disney camping trip

Surrounded by trees, hiking trails and a large lake, the camping ground contains 800 campsites for RV’s and tents, as well as more than 400 rustic log cabins. Each campsite contains all the comforts of home – water and electricity as well as sewer and cable hook-ups on the RV sites. The campsite’s comfort stations include showers, restrooms, telephones, laundry facilities and ice, while cabins have a full bathroom, air conditioning and housekeeping services.

disney camping trip

While most visitors to the Fort Wilderness Camping Ground are visiting Disney, the camping ground also makes a great place to have a holiday in its own right. The grounds are loaded with activities including hiking and jogging trails, swimming pools, tennis courts, fishing, cycling and horseback riding. Disney also offers a petting zoo and restaurants with an outdoors-barbecue theme. Those who stay on the grounds will also enjoy nightly campfire sing along with Disney characters, followed by an outdoor screening of a Disney film.

disney camping trip

Like all of Disney’s endeavours, Fort Wilderness is known for its outstanding attention to detail, and for the tip-top shape that the park is kept in.

Whether you are planning on camping for its own sake or visiting Disney World – Fort Wilderness provides transport for all campers. Campers are able to rent a golf cart to get around the campground and Fort Wilderness also provides ample transportation to and from the Disney World parks.

Camp Near Disney

disney camping trip

If camping at Fort Wilderness doesn’t suit you, but you’d still like to camp near a Disney Park, there are plenty of great camping grounds within driving distance to a Disney Park!

Moss Park in Orlando, is a short 20-minute drive to Walt Disney World and features many of the amazing attractions that campers want. From lake and beach swimming to watching deer grazing or relaxing while the kids play in the playground, this park is an inexpensive, and fun way to camp – and, because it’s so close to Disney, you can use the camping grounds as a place of rest and relaxation after long days in the park.

Similarly, Kelly Park is 35 minutes to Disney and is located in the heart of Bear country, with crystal clear water springs that provide the best of summer fun. There are so many options out there, so you can choose what’s best for your family camping holiday!

Disney-Themed Camping

disney camping trip

If camping at, or near Disney doesn’t work, then why not go camping anywhere! The easiest way to introduce some Disney fun to your camping trip this summer is to theme the trip yourself, #DisneyStyle!

Start with your camping equipment – is there a way that you could add some Disney inspiration to it? Many department stores, as well as Amazon, sell Disney themed camping chairs, tents, sleeping bags and much more. Alternatively, you could take a little inspiration from Disney-Bounding, and theme your camping trip around a certain Disney character or movie. Fans of Frozen might deck their trailer’s out in blue shades, winter themed ornaments etc, while lovers of Sleeping Beauty might choose to go tent camping with blue and pink bedding.

Backyard Camping – Camp Disney!

disney camping trip

The easiest way to experience a bit of Disney camping this summer, is to stay home and create “Camp Disney” in your own backyard!

Firstly, agree on a theme for your camp – the clothing you will wear, the activities you do, the food you will eat and the movies your will watch will be based around this theme. You can pick a general theme such as ‘ocean’ and build around that, or you might be more specific, choosing the have a Pocahontas inspired camp. Once you have decided on a theme, you can begin to plan your camp.

Here are some examples of themes you could use to plan your Camp Disney:

  • ‘Seaweed’ grape skewers
  • ‘Oyster’ biscuits
  • Goldfish crackers
  • Filled ‘Crabs’ (croissants)

  • The Little Mermaid
  • Finding Nemo
  • Pirates of the Caribbean
  • Lilo and Stitch
  • Finding Dory
  • Take a trip to the beach
  • Visit the aquarium
  • Clean and sort shells
  • Learn about deep sea life on the internet
  • Make an ocean in a bottle

  Lady and the Tramp

  • Spaghetti and Meatballs
  • Cereal served in pet bowls
  • Italian bruschetta
  • Tomato, basil and mozzarella salad

  • Lady and the Tramp
  • Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp’s Adventure
  • The Fox and the Hound
  • Oliver and Company
  • Print off some printable dog masks to wear at movie time
  • Make your own animal ears headband
  • Visit a pet store or puppy shelter
  • Build a pet bed for your fur baby

disney camping trip

As you can see, you don’t even have to leave home to enjoy a Disney vacation! Families who love Disney can build their own camp time around their favourite Disney movies or characters – whether you are going to stay at home for a ‘staycation’ or pitch a tent in the backyard.

disney camping trip

And, if you don’t want to pick a theme – go general! Watch as many Disney movies as you can squeeze in, have a karaoke night with Disney songs, watch The Parent Trap and bang sticks to chase the mountain lions away and have fun!

Let it go: How to enjoy Disney World with minimal planning

disney camping trip

There is no one size fits all Disney vacation but with all the videos, advice and checklists fellow guests share on social media, it’s easy to develop fear of missing out and feel like you need to do it all.

“I got very overwhelmed,” said Nezhat Baygie, who planned her family’s first trip to Walt Disney World last year. “All of these parents are doing all these extravagant things and then on the other hand, you’ve got the people who just find every single way to do literally everything for free .”

She did her research and then chose a different path for her family.

“Running from ride to ride, going across the park back and forth to make these reservations, that would have made us miserable. It’s a vacation,” she said. “We needed to be able to go with the flow.”

One of the most freeing things you can do at Disney World is play the parks by ear or as Elsa famously sang, let it go .

Are reservations still required at Disney World parks?

With few exceptions, most guests will need to make theme park reservations until Jan. 9, when  reservations will no longer be required for date-based tickets.

Annual pass holders will need to continue making park reservations next year if they want to enter parks before 2 p.m., outside of select good-to-go dates when reservations won’t be required.

Additionally, reservations are highly recommended for popular table-service restaurants like Cinderella’s Royal Table and experiences like lightsaber building at Savi’s Workshop or makeovers at Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique. Space is limited and reservations, which open 60 days in advance, fill up quickly.

“We made our park reservations, and that was really it,” Baygie said.

Can you go to Disney without planning?

At a minimum, you should make park and hotel reservations. For as much as you’re spending on a Disney vacation, you want to make sure you can actually get in. And while there are certainly enough hotels on and off Disney property to find a room any time of year, you may find fewer choices at higher prices booking last minute.

You’ll also want to plan for any experience you have your heart set on. For instance, if you want to ride Disney World’s two newest attractions, TRON Lightcycle / Run and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind , it’s worth learning how to join their virtual queues because neither of them offers traditional standby lines.

Before their trip, Baygie and her family identified a few top priorities for each park. For everything else, they decided: “We get done what we get done, and what we can't get done, we just don't, and it’s that simple. You just have to understand that there's no way to do it all, so be happy with what you get to do.”

Pro tip: It also helps to plan for the weather. It can be rainy or sunny at any time of year. Packing ponchos and sunscreen in advance can save you from paying premiums at the parks.

The 'Most Magical Place on Earth': 10 tips to keep the magic in your Disney World vacation

How do you do Disney without planning?

The key to enjoying Disney World without planning is to be flexible.

“We did not rope drop . We got up when we got up,” Baygie said. “We got there by say 10 a.m. each day and stayed until close, and we sat down while we needed to sit down. We would grab a snack or something and take a break if our feet were tired and then we'd get up and wander around again.”

You can check showtimes, attraction wait times, character appearance locations and more on the free My Disney Experience app and pay to save time in line with Genie+ or Individual Lightning Lanes.

“We weren't going to pay extra to stand in a shorter line,” Baygie said. “Amusement parks are lines. That's part of it. That's expected.”

Her family also stuck to quick-service meals.

“My daughter said ‘I'd rather have more park time than spend time sitting and eating food,” she recalled. “OK, your trip. That's great. Knock that off the table. That's not something we need to budget for.”

You can find plenty of popular treats at quick-service venues, like oversized cinnamon rolls at Gaston’s Tavern, cheeseburger bao buns at Satu’li Canteen and loaded potato barrels at Woody’s Lunchbox. You can also snack your way across EPCOT festival booths and other World Showcase eateries. However, if you arrive and regret not booking character dining or other table-service meals, go ahead and check the app as fellow guests cancel last minute.

No reservations are needed for parades or nighttime spectacular shows. Just make sure to arrive early enough to get a good view.

What should you not forget at Disney?

Disney fans have all sorts of advice on what to skip and do at each park.

“There will be people with vastly different points of view,” Baygie said. “That doesn't mean that just because that was their perfect trip that that is your perfect trip.”

“My biggest recommendation is decide what type of flow works for your family the best, and not just one person,” she added. “Because if you have everything set the way that one person wants it to be, is everybody else really going to be OK with that? How much stress is there going to be?”

She advises families to not get wrapped in the hype of trying everything.

“We don't have regrets with how we did things,” she said.

If you go with the flow, you’ll be surprised by how much you can do too.

The Complete Guide: How Much Does it Cost for a Family of 5 to Go to Disney World?

W ith 4 theme parks, 2 water parks, and amazing resorts, Walt Disney World is the perfect family vacation destination, but it does come with a price. Today I am sharing details about a Disney vacation cost and answering the question “ How much does it cost for a family of 5 to go to Disney World? “

Walt Disney World in Orlando Florida is one of the most popular theme parks on the planet. It is often a “must-do” for families and I can see why.

Walking down Main Street U.S.A. to see the reveal of Cinderella’s Castle, meeting your favorite Disney Princess , and ending your day with fireworks can make for a magical family vacation.

Overview of Expenses for Disney Vacation

Most people assume a Disney vacation is ridiculously expensive, and it is not cheap, but there are ways to save and ways to splurge.

Budgeting for your Disney trip is not one size fits all. Decide on your budget and priorities and then plan your trip. I always plan a bit bigger and then we break things down to what we feel comfortable spending.

Average Cost of a Disney World Vacation

The average cost of a Disney World vacation for a week is anywhere between $5000.00 and up for 5 people . Typical range is $4500.00 to $9000.00. This includes flight, hotel, tickets, and dining.

Hotel costs are the trickiest piece of the puzzle for a family of 5 Disney trip because standard rooms fit 4 people.

This means families of 5 either book two rooms, book rooms with a 5th sleeper, or book a family suite, more on accommodation options later in this post.

As a family of five who has been traveling to Disney World since 2013, when all 3 kids were under 5, we have learned where to save and where to splurge for our Disney World budget . (I share trip cost examples at the end of the post.)

Cost of your trip will vary because everyone vacations differently. Some want to splurge, some are okay saving. It depends on your priorities.

Total Trip Cost

These are the basic Disney Vacation costs that all families will have to consider. Overall costs will increase/decrease depending on length of stay, choice of resort, and the time of year of your trip.

  • Accommodations: Value, Moderate, Deluxe, Off-Site
  • Park Tickets : Park hopper, non-hopper, water parks
  • Dining: Sit-Down Meals, Quick Service, Character Meals
  • Transportation: airfare, rental car, uber
  • Extras: Genie+, souvenirs

Accommodation Costs

Where you decide to stay for your Disney trip will greatly influence the cost of your trip. This is where you can significantly save money but it depends on what you are looking for in your hotel stay.

Guests have two options for accommodations when visiting Walt Disney World: stay on-site at a Disney Resort or stay off-site at a hotel or house rental.

Disney Resorts

The cost of a Disney World hotel can range from $170.00 to $1000.00+ a night. Disney World resort categories are Disney Value Resorts , Moderate Resorts , and Deluxe Resorts .

When there are special offers I have seen value resorts at $120.00-$140.00 a night. It is really important to check your dates, I use the Walt Disney World website , to see what special offers are available.

Guests that stay on-site receive early entry, 30 minutes before park opening for all 4 theme parks.

Deluxe resort guests receive early entry and extended evening hours for participating theme parks. (Dates/Theme Park vary day to day, check the My Disney Experience app for latest information.)

All guests receive transportation to and from your resort and the theme parks, as well as Disney Springs . Transportation includes bus, monorail , walking paths, boat, and the Disney Skyliner .

I am “Team On-Site”! I have never had an issue finding an on-site at Disney World resort for any budget.

If you are a family of 5 and want to stay at a value resort, consider booking connecting rooms. We are doing this for an upcoming trip and it is less expensive than upgrading to a moderate resort that fits 5.

Accommodation Options for Family of 5 at Disney World:

  • Book connecting standard rooms at a value resort. We have stayed at Pop Century and are trying an All-Star Resort for our upcoming trip.
  • Book a family suite at Art of Animation . These animation themed rooms are great for families and sleep up to 6. Check prices very carefully often the family suites cost more than 2 connecting rooms.
  • Upgrade to a deluxe resort that fits 5, we have stayed at the Riviera Resort. This includes suites and 1, 2, and 3 bedroom rooms as well as Disney Vacation Club rooms.

Off-Site Resort Options

You may want to consider staying off-site. Off-site will give you more space in your room as well as a chance to remove yourself from the “Disney Bubble”

Often people think it will save you a lot of money. In my experience it doesn’t because you have to rent a car, pay for parking at the parks, and the value of time sitting in traffic to/from the parks is not worth it personally.

Space vs. cost will always be better off-site. If you are traveling with a large group or you are only visiting the Disney parks one or two days during your week long vacation, off-site might be a good choice.

It is a good idea to compare the prices of off-site and on-site accommodations . Be sure to consider rental car costs as well as parking and resort fees for off-site hotels.

A few options to start pricing out your trip:

  • For the Star Wars Fan: Star Wars Themed Vacation Rental
  • For large groups traveling to Disney: House that Sleeps 23
  • Least Expensive Resort on Disney World Property: All-Star Movie Resort
  • Luxury Resort on Disney World Property: Contemporary Resort
  • Midrange Disney World Resort: Caribbean Beach Resort

For the 4 theme parks there are two options: Single Day tickets and Multi-Day tickets. Guests can also add on water park days to the pricing but it doesn’t play into the pricing options for the theme parks.

  • Single-Day Tickets: Start at $109.00/day for ages 10+. This is a very low end and most single day tickets will be closer to $119.00/day or more during the busy season.
  • Multi-Day Tickets: Start at $89.00/day for ages 10+. The pricing for multi-day is “the more you play the less you pay” per day. Guests save around $20.00 a ticket when you purchase 3 or more days.
  • Park-Hopper: Start at $228.00/day for ages 10+. This pricing is pay less the more days you play. Park-hopper tickets allows guests to visit multiple theme parks in one day. I do not recommend Park-Hopper for your first visit to Disney World .
  • Genie+ and Individual Lightning Lane: Start at $15.00 – $39.00 a day or per attraction. Learn more here .
  • Occasionally there are special offers on park tickets on the Walt Disney World website.

For our family, one day at a Disney park costs on average, $658.88. This does not include dining or any extras we may purchase.

Keep in mind depending on the season you visit you can expect to pay up to $159.00 a ticket for busy season.

I checked December 25th ticket price for one day and it was $159.00 per person.

We find it beneficial from a cost perspective to plan multiple days during our Disney vacation because the per day price is less the more days you visit.

I always suggest starting with prices from the Disney World website and comparing them to Undercover Tourist Disney tickets .

Undercover Tourist has “adult ticket for child prices” special offer a different times of throughout the year and it can save a bit of money for your trip.

Dining Expenses

Dining expenses can vary from family to family but this is where we save the most money on our trips. This strategy is not for everyone but it works for us.

To save on dining we avoid table-service and character meals. We plan our Disney itinerary to eat at the quick service restaurants and we never feel like we are missing out.

Disney World offers the Disney Dining Plan to guests staying on-site. When you book your trip you will purchase the dining plan. It is pre-paid so when you are on your trip you can not worry as much about the cost, but is the Disney dining plan worth it?

Yes and No. If you have kids under 10 you may find it worth it, but if you are traveling with kids over 10, everyone pays adult pricing.

Usually you are spending a lot more per day than you would if you paid out of pocket.

  • Quick-Service Dining Plan: $57.01 for adults and $23.83 (ages 3-9) per day. Includes 2 Quick Service Meals per Day, 1 snack or non-alcoholic beverage, 1 refillable mug for duration of your stay.
  • Disney Dining Plan: $94.28 for adults and $26.69 (ages 3-9) per day. Includes 1 Quick Service Meal, 1 Table-Service Meal, 1 snack or non-alcoholic beverage, 1 refillable mug for duration of your stay (per day.)
  • Prices are on average and can fluctuate depending on the offers at time of booking.

If you plan to do a character dining meal every day of your trip you may find the dining plan to be cost effective. This is one of those things you should price out.

Menus for character meals, table service, and quick service are on the My Disney Experience app and Disney World website.

If you are doing 1 character or sit-down meal during our trip it is financially better to pay out of pocket than purchase the dining plan for a family of 5.

What About “Free Dining”?

Free Dining is not actually the best deal. Again it depends on your traveling party. When Disney offers free dining it also charges a regular room rate for your hotel and guests are required to purchase park hopper tickets and stay longer than 3 nights.

This might work for you and it might not. If you do not want to price these out feel free to reach out as I do consulting for trips and would be happy to help.

Why Age of Your Traveling Party Matter, Especially With Dining Reservations

Anyone over the age of 10 is an “adult” when it comes to Disney pricing.

This means they will pay adult ticket pricing and adult pricing at Character Meals/buffet dining. If dining cost $57.01 a person for adults, it includes anyone over the age of 9 regardless of what they actually eat.

At quick service dining you can order kids meals for anyone, so this isn’t much of an issue. Sticking to quick service dining on our trips is a huge money saver and we don’t feel like we miss out.

Another quick tip: As a family of 5 we don’t need large portion sizes for the five of us for lunch. Usually I will share with the kids and this saves a little money each day.

I also like to pick one or two sit-down meals to “splurge” on. It makes them special and balances our spending without going too far out of budget.

Additional Costs and Extras

Additional costs would be transportation, souvenirs and merchandise, as well as any special event tickets you may want to purchase.

Other than transportation, these are optional and can be where you choose to save.

What are the Transportation Costs to Visit Disney World

You will have to fly or drive to the Walt Disney Resort. This will be different for each family and I recommend comparing your options.

Once you arrive you have a few options for transportation.

  • Book a car or Mears transportation to and from the airport. Mears cost $16.00 each way for adults and $13.00 for children. (As of 4/2024)
  • Rent a car. Walt Disney World resorts do not charge a nightly parking fee.
  • To save on flights check surrounding airports to find the best deals for your trip. We have also flown budget airlines like Frontier Airlines to save on transportation costs.

Once on-site at Disney you don’t need a car if you plan on staying at Disney. If you want to do a day at Universal you may want a car or you can Uber.

How Much Spending Money for Disney World

Disney World has some cute merchandise and you may want to purchase something from every park or you may want to pick one souvenir for the entire trip.

Consider the cost of souvenirs before you arrive and set an expectation for spending.

Special Events During Your Stay

At different times of the year Walt Disney World hosts special events that require an additional ticket.

These are Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party and Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. There are also After-Hour events. These special events require a separate theme park ticket and usually affect daytime park hours.

Consider these events when planning which park to visit each day during your trip and if you want to include these in your Disney vacation.

How Much for a Trip to Disney World (Example)

September 15th-Septemeber 21st, 2024: 6 nights, 5 day park tickets (not park-hopper), family of 5, all kids 10+. Does not include dining and transportation.

A 5 day park ticket will allow you to visit Magic Kingdom , Epcot , Disney’s Hollywood Studios , and Disney’s Animal Kingdom for 1 day each, with an extra day at a park of your choice.

Prices are subject to change and this is just an example.

Things to Consider for Pricing Your Disney Trip

Don’t be discouraged by initial costs. Disney World has been offering special deals and discounts. Always check the Walt Disney World website first to see the best discounts.

The best tips I can give you for saving on a Walt Disney World vacation is to prioritize where you want to spend your money.

If you will be at the theme parks most of your vacation don’t over spend on a resort. Consider choosing 1 or 2 table service meals and try quick service for most of your dining.

Consider the following and decide what you can change and what are non-negotiables for your trip.

  • Age of Everyone Traveling (at the time of the trip)
  • Preferred Resort
  • Time of Year You are Traveling
  • How Many Parks You Will Visit
  • What Type of Dining Do You Want to Include
  • Transportation Costs
  • Extra Costs, Souvenirs, etc.

Most Expensive vs. Least Expensive Time to Visit Disney World

The most expensive time to visit Disney World is during the busiest times. This usually means July, end of December, and mid-March-April will be the most expensive times to visit.

The least expensive time to visit Disney World is during low crowd times. This is September, January and early February, and the end of August. Read this for why I love a Disney trip in the summer !

If you can visit during the least busy times I would. When our kids were younger we would avoid school breaks and holidays.

Is a Disney World Trip Worth the Money?

The cost of a trip to Disney is definitely high. We love it so it is worth it for us, but be sure it is something your family really wants to do.

Often I hear people say they “have” to take their kids to Disney World. That is not true.

I recommend not going to Disney World if you don’t like theme parks . It is not for everyone and that is okay. We love visiting the Disney theme parks. We have visited Disneyland California and Disneyland Paris .

For us it is worth the money. Only you can decided if it is worth the money for you.

Previous Disney Trips and What They Cost

I add to this as we take trips. It is interesting to see how much the trips have changed over the years and I will continue to update as we plan more trips.

7 Nights at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort (August 2021)

2 Adults, 3 Children (13, 11, and 9), 5 Day Non-Park Hopper

  • Resort and Tickets: $4672.88
  • Dining: $945.28
  • Transportation(Flight): $1100.00
  • Total: $6718.16

Disney is certainly a pricey vacation. There is no way getting around it. I will say we had to make a last minute change to our resort and didn’t get the best deal on our package.

Dining is where we really saved. We did all of our meals at quick service locations except for one table service brunch during a non-park rest day .

5 Nights at Disney’s Pop Century (February 2013)

2 Adults, 3 Children (5, 2, and 1), 4 Day Non-Park Hopper

  • Resorts and Tickets: $1695.15
  • Dining: Included in Resort and Tickets Package
  • Transportation (We Drove)
  • Total: $1695.15

This trip was years ago and I don’t want to give the impression that cost is anywhere near this now BUT you can save a lot of money visiting Disney before your kids are over 3 years old.

A lot of people wait because they want the kids to remember it but if you want to go and see your kids experience the magic of visiting Disney World it will be the least expensive Disney trip you will ever take!

I will never forget dining with the princesses, watching the night parade, and eating a Mickey bar with my kids at that age.

They may not remember but it is a memory I will cherish forever.

I hope this breakdown of how much a Disney vacation cost for a family of 5 has given you insight into how to plan an trip to the Walt Disney World resort.

My family had to stay at 3 different resorts during our 8-day trip to Disney World, and it wasn't worth all the effort

  • My family stayed at Pop Century, Animal Kingdom Lodge, and Wilderness Lodge at Disney World.
  • We did the "triple stay" because of sparse hotel availability and last-minute changes to our trip.
  • We had fun and Disney makes moving between resorts easy, but I wouldn't plan my trip this way again.

Insider Today

Disney World is famously busy around the holidays and spring break , which can make it difficult to find a hotel room on the property.

When my family of four went to Disney World for the holidays one year, everything was so booked we had to stay in three different resorts.

We spent one night in a room at Pop Century (a value resort), three nights in a one-bedroom villa at Animal Kingdom Lodge (a deluxe resort), and four nights in a one-bedroom villa at Wilderness Lodge (a deluxe resort). We've done split stays at Disney World in the past, but this was the first time we stayed at three different hotels on a single visit.

We initially planned a four-day stay at Wilderness Lodge and ended up adding on three days at Animal Kingdom Lodge because of changing flight schedules. We then added the first night at Pop Century because we ended up having to fly in a day early.

On our first night, we stayed in a simple room at Pop Century

Our standard room with one queen bed and one Murphy bed at Pop Century was $305 for one night, which isn't exactly cheap, especially for a value resort. At less busy times of the year, rooms are typically in the $200 dollar range or lower.

But booking the extra night at the hotel ended up saving us more than changing our airfare would have cost.

Pop Century wasn't my favorite resort, but it definitely has its pros

It's unfair to compare a value resort like Pop Century to villas at deluxe resorts, but Pop Century was my least favorite of the three.

That doesn't mean I didn't like staying there though. The room was clean with generic Disney theming and the layout worked for us. My kids also really enjoyed the bold, splashy theming across the resort.

It's conveniently located on the Skyliner route (Disney's free gondola-style transportation) and has a pool that's great for relaxing after a long day at the parks.

If you're watching your budget and don't need a lot of amenities, Pop Century is a fun choice.

I liked staying in both of the deluxe villas

This wasn't my first time staying at Animal Kingdom Lodge or Wilderness Lodge, and I'd happily stay in either again. The one-bedroom villas at deluxe resorts cost about $900 a night on average.

Related stories

I liked the villa at Animal Kingdom Lodge better than Wilderness Lodge because we had two full bathrooms. It was great that I didn't have to share with my 12- and 13-year-old sons .

The lobby at Animal Kingdom Lodge is beautiful, and I love being able to see the roaming animals in the savanna outside. But I actually liked the cozy, mountain-lodge vibes of Wilderness Lodge better.

Moving from one resort to another at Disney World was pretty seamless

It's pretty easy to move between resorts at Disney World. We still had to adhere to regular check-in and check-out times, but Disney was able to move our luggage since we didn't have a car.

We just took our belongings down to bell services and filled out some bag tags to let them know where we wanted them to end up. We received a claim check and checked in with the bell services at the next resort to set up the delivery.

In both swaps, our bags were available at our new location by late afternoon/early evening. We had the option of going down to retrieve them or having them delivered to our room. We chose the latter and made sure to tip.

It was also helpful to have a day bag to carry the things we'd need between resort changes. When it was time to move, we took the free resort bus to Disney Springs and caught another bus to our new resort.

Even though the moves weren't difficult, I didn't like repacking our stuff in the middle of a trip. We love the homelike atmosphere of the one-bedroom villas at Disney World and typically like to settle in and unpack, especially on longer stays.

Having to pack up and move hotel rooms twice in one visit was an annoyance, albeit a minor one.

We also ended up having to spend more on food than usual

Having access to a kitchen and being able to order groceries is one of the easiest ways we save money at Disney World. We typically eat two meals a day in our villa and one meal out.

The logistics of having groceries delivered and making plans to use all the perishables when we were on the move seemed daunting, so we ate all of our meals in restaurants and spent more than we usually do.

In the past, we've had bell services transport nonperishable food items from resort to resort. I've never asked them to transport perishable food, but I ultimately wouldn't trust someone else to make sure my milk was kept refrigerated.

Even if it didn't ruin our vacation, I wouldn't want to go through the stress of moving around so much again

Moving between three resorts went very smoothly for us, but I wouldn't plan a trip this way again.

Although experiencing the themes of multiple resorts on a single trip was fun and a great way to see more of the property, I wasn't a fan of packing all our stuff up multiple times.

If we get caught in a similar situation and have to split any future stays, I'd definitely prefer to only have to go between two resorts.
