The dreamy pull of  Waikiki’s waves and Day-Glo sunsets over Diamond Head are strong. Throw in world-class resorts, some of Hawaii’s best shopping, dining, art and nightlife and it’s no wonder bustling  Honolulu is often travelers’ first and only Hawaii stop.

But the rolling green Ko’olau Mountains just beyond the capital’s skyscrapers allude to adventurous alternatives a short drive from downtown. And thanks to the archipelago’s geography (as well as short, frequent and reliable commuter flights), even neighboring islands are just a day trip away.

Red dirt track on the Na pali coast - Kalalau trail - Hawaii

Napali Coast, Kaua ’ i

Best for epic views.

The flight to  Kaua ’ i takes just 35 minutes, but memories of the waterfall-lined  Napali Coast cliffs will last a lifetime. Sailboats and catamarans depart from several southerly harbors for day and sunset cruises.

If opting for a later tour, spend the morning exploring the striated red rocks of  Waimea Canyon – at 36,000ft, it’s nearly as deep as the cliffs are high. Or if you’re feeling flush, helicopter tours showcase it all and then some, occasionally coupling aerial highlights with land-based excursions.

Getting there: Hourly flights depart Honolulu for Lihue each day. From there, rent a car or arrange a tour that meets in Lihue.

Group of hikers walk on cooled pahoehoe lava flow at sunrise on the Kilauea Volcano; Honolulu day trips

Kilauea Volcano, Island of Hawai'i

Best for otherworldly landscapes.

Larger than all the other islands combined (more than six Oʻahus could fit inside), it’d be impossible to experience  Hawaii Island in a single day. Instead, focus on its undisputed highlight: the world’s most active volcano –  Kilauea .

Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park , with its still-steaming sulfur banks; hikeable, hardened lava lake in  Kilauea Iki Crater ; and otherworldly formations and flows along the  Chain of Craters Road ; is the best place to start. If you have time, explore Kilauea’s impacts outside park boundaries, including the new  Pahoa Lava Zone Museum show – a volunteer-run outfit detailing the dest ructive four-month-long 2018 eruption. The best place to see a small part of the 2018 eruption is Pohoiki , the world’s newest black sand beach.

Getting there: It’s a 50-minute flight from Honolulu to Hilo. Tours depart from Hilo for Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, or for the most flexibility rent a car. It’s a 45-minute drive south to the National Park and another 45 minutes from the park to Pahoa.

The USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor

Pearl Harbor, Oʻahu

Best for history lessons.

Perhaps the most popular day trip from Honolulu is a visit to Pearl Harbor and the  WWII Valor in the Pacific National Monument . The area has four main attractions that honor and commemorate the infamous site of Japanese attacks during WWII: the USS Arizona Memorial , which floats atop the sunken warship; the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum and Park ; the USS Missouri Memorial ; and Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum on Ford Island.

Getting there: At just over 10 miles from Waikiki, it’s more affordable to make your way there by public transit, but tour companies streamline the process by arranging hard-to-get timed tickets and navigating the red tape associated with visits to an active military base.

Kualoa Ranch, Oʻahu

Best for cinematic landscapes.

Make your way over to the island’s east side to visit Kualoa Ranch Private Nature Reserve . Known as “Hollywood’s backlot,” these 4000 acres of land might be recognizable from Jurassic Park, Jumanji and Godzilla.

This privately owned preserve is also culturally significant. It was a safe place for Hawaiian natives to seek forgiveness and also where they would train for annual warrior games. Fast forward to today, and the area’s vast open valleys and rainforest still scream adventure.

It’s easy to spend the entire day here exploring remote areas of the park via electric mountain bikes, or on experienceslike the Jurassic Adventure Tour, which takes visitors to famous sites from the movie. Or take to the open ocean on a catamaran for a dreamy view of Kaneohe Bay.

You’ll also get to see Mokoli‘i Island and Hokule‘a Beach. You should probably also pose with a dinosaur figurine at some point to reenact your favorite Jurassic Park scene. Pro tip: Because this is a popular place, it’s best to book activities well ahead of time.

Getting there: Kualoa Ranch is about 45 minutes from Waikiki Beach by car. Bus routes #8, #19, #20, #23, #42, #60 or #88A also stop at Kualoa Ranch.

Central Oʻahu and The North Shore

Best for surf beaches.

Just north of Pearl Harbor, Highway 2 snakes toward the island’s legendary  North Shore , which pounds with epic surf in winter. Along the way, stop at the  sacred Hawaiian birthing stones before navigating  Dole Plantation's pineapple fields.

From the surfer town of Hale’iwa , head left along the only coastal road to check out Waimea Falls, taste locally-grown coffee in an old sugar mill and hike amid nesting albatross in  Ka’ena Point State Park . Loop back for surf beaches and shrimp trucks, ending the day with a spectacle and luau at the  Polynesian Cultural Center .

Getting there: It’s about 30 miles from Honolulu to Haleiwa, but plan for an hour-and-a-half drive (without stops). Though TheBus services to the North Shore, you’ll spend most of the day waiting for its infrequent service; it’s best to hire a car.

Hanauma Bay and Windward Oʻahu

Best for snorkelling and kayaking.

On the other side of Diamond Head,  Hanauma , a sunken volcanic cone forming a natural, protected bay, teems with life. Its lagoons and fringing reef host O ʻ ahu’s best snorkeling – home to sea turtles, eels, colorful parrotfish and humuhumunukunukuapua’a, the state fish.

Head to trendy  Kailua on the  Windward Side  to  shop its surfer-chic boutiques or rent a kayak for a picnic on Mokolua Islands off of  Lanikai Beach . Before returning, visit the Valley of the Temples to explore peaceful Bayodo-In – a recreation of a Unesco-designated Buddhist temple in Uji, Japan, at the base of jungle-clad mountains.

Getting there: TheBus public transit services this route; it’s also possible to Uber or Lyft.

A diamond-shaped yellow sign with a black arrow sits above a smaller square sign bearing the words '15 mph' is posted next to a two-lane road leading into a curve flanked with thick, lush-green trees; Honolulu day trips

Road to Hana, Maui

Best for road tripping.

There’s so much to see along the 50-mile iconic Hana Highway , around East Maui from Pa’ia, to the road’s end in Hana. There are a whopping 620 curves and 59 bridges in all. The verdant thoroughfare has swimmable waterfalls, gorgeous coastal views, roadside fruit stalls, lava tubes and botanical gardens.

The best way to experience the Road to Hana is on a guided tour or by flying to Hana on Mokulele Airlines if you plan to stay in Hana town. Locals encourage visitors not to drive the road on their own because of the high traffic volume.

Getting there: Dozens of daily 43-minute flights connect Honolulu and Kahului . Rent a car at the airport or employ one of several tour companies to navigate the winding route so you don’t have to keep your eyes on the road.

15 Best Day Trips from Honolulu

Honolulu is the epicenter of the Hawaiian Islands.

There’s no hiding the fact that it’s a large, urban-centered city, but due to its supreme location on the island of Oahu, overlooking the beautiful vistas of the Pacific Ocean, Honolulu is a city that is very much livable – and perfect for a vacation.

City life in Honolulu is slow, it’s easy to escape the streets by simply walking down to one of the many beaches to spend the day relaxing in the sun or exploring the shoreline by paddleboard or boat.

The days will fly by in Honolulu, and that’s before you even head further afield.

Climb the iconic Diamond Head Crater for incredible views over the city or travel to the North Shore to explore some of Hawaii’s best beaches.

If you fancy, you could even travel to the other islands in the archipelago, chasing volcanoes and waterfalls as you go.

Honolulu is the perfect base from which to explore Hawaii; Here are the best day trips you can make from the city:

1. Waikiki Beach

Waikiki Beach

Honolulu might be a city, but it’s also the perfect beach getaway destination, complete with sandy scenery and all the amenities you could ever need right on your doorstep.

Many tourists will find themselves staying on Waikiki Beach, on the south shore.

If you aren’t booked into a hotel there, you will find that your first day trip needs to be to Waikiki Beach.

Waikiki is what most people imagine when they think of a holiday to Hawaii.

This is the most famous beach in the state and it’s complete with bars, restaurants, and outdoor activities to keep you occupied for weeks if you desire.

White sands contrast starkly with the glimmering skyscrapers of Honolulu.

Spend the day drinking cocktails, snorkeling, surfing, paddle boarding – the options here are absolutely endless.

Available tour : Waikiki Sunset Cocktail Cruise

2. Diamond Head Crater

Diamond Head

The hike to the summit of the iconic Diamond Head Crater could well be the best day trip possible from Honolulu.

As soon as you land on Oahu, and as soon as you begin your journey through the streets of Honolulu or along the beach at Waikiki, you’ll notice the towering presence of Diamond Head Crater.

The crater itself is a huge volcanic cone which dominates the horizon.

The hike to the top takes you along some of the best scenic viewpoints overlooking the shoreline and Honolulu.

Be sure to start your trek to the top early – much of the trail is steep and the weather here is always hot.

Although many parts are now concreted with steps, the hike is still demanding.

The earlier you start, the fewer people there are and the cooler it’s going to be.

Suggested tour : Diamond Head Crater Adventure Hike

3. Pearl Harbor

Pearl Harbor

It might be a rather somber day trip from Honolulu, but a visit to Pearl Harbor will certainly be a moving day trip.

This is the scene of the infamous Japanese attack on Hawaii that threw the United States into World War II. It’s a dramatic piece of history and one that many visitors to Honolulu will find themselves immersed in at some point during their trip.

Visit the harbor itself to see the site of the attack and to learn more about it.

Then travel to the USS Arizona, where the sunken battleship still rests on the harbor floor after its sinking and a visitor’s center allows you to walk out over the wreck.

Finally, visit the Punchbowl Cemetery, to pay your respects to all those who died fighting during World War II, not just at Pearl Harbor but across the Pacific.

Recommended tour : Pearl Harbor & USS Arizona Memorial Tour with Pick-Up

4. Doors On, Doors Off Helicopter Rides

Honolulu from a Helicopter

Oahu is a truly spectacular island to visit, but to really experience the vast, wild nature and beautiful shorelines found here, the ultimate day trip from Honolulu is to take to the skies.

What better way to see Oahu than from the air? Many tour companies provide helicopter rides to meet the ever-increasing demand from tourists and travelers looking to get airborne.

These small helicopters even have the option to have the doors on or off.

Don’t worry, you are safely strapped in, but removing the doors gives you the opportunity to really see what’s below you and take some awesome photos.

Book online : Oahu Circle: Island Helicopter Doors On or Doors Off Tour

5. Learn to Surf or Paddleboard

Learn to surf, Honolulu

Hawaii is where surfing was invented.

The Hawaiian tradition began centuries ago and was first recorded by Europeans when Captain Cook sailed through in the late 18th Century.

This ancient Polynesian tradition has very much become a worldwide phenomenon, but this is where it all began.

While in Honolulu, take the day to travel out to the numerous beaches around Oahu to hit the famous breaks.

If you have never surfed, there are plenty of companies offering instruction – a good place to start is Waikiki.

If you would rather try a more relaxed version of the sport, give stand up paddle boarding a go.

Available class : Group Surf Lesson [4:1 ratio]

6. Snorkeling and Scuba Diving

Honolulu Snorkelling

Hawaii is a real paradise for those who love the underwater world.

The rich, coral-filled waters are awash with a diverse array of marine life, both small and large.

There are plenty of unique and exciting snorkel and dive spots for visitors to explore across the island, and many tours exclusively cater to people looking to experience the best that can be found in the water.

7. Hanauma Bay

Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve

Hanauma Bay is Oahu’s best preserved marine nature park.

It’s one of the ultimate destinations in Hawaii for snorkeling and diving, and one of the easiest to reach destinations from Honolulu.

Just a short walk off the beach into the calm ocean is a rich coral bed full of colorful and vibrant aquatic creatures.

The beach is stunning and the coastline here is the best that Oahu has to offer.

8. North Shore Beaches

Oahu North Shore Beaches

The North Shore of Oahu makes for an exceptional day trip from Honolulu.

There are countless beaches in the north of the island just waiting to be discovered and explored, and it makes for a relaxing, quieter getaway than the usual outing to Waikiki.

The coastline here is wild and windswept and is a favorite amongst surfers and snorkelers looking to either ride the waves or spot some marine life.

There’s so much here to explore that you could keep returning day after day and still find a new spot every time.

Recommended tour : Half-Day Tour of Oahu’s Famous North Shore and Circle Island

9. Ko Olina Coastline

Ko Olina Coastline

On the west coast of Oahu can be found one of the island’s most up and coming beach areas, the Ko Olina Coastline.

Previously just the domain of a few very upscale resorts, this quiet but beautiful area is becoming known to the rest of the island very quickly.

It’s an absolutely stunning stretch of coastline and is within easy reach of Honolulu.

Relax along the beaches, hike along dramatic cliffs or hit the water to experience the waves or coral.

There’s plenty to keep you coming back for more at Ko Olina.

10. East Coast Oahu

East Coast Oahu

Oahu is the island that just keeps giving and giving when it comes to incredible scenery and coastlines.

The East Coast of Oahu is no exception and you will find that tour companies provide dedicated East Coast tours to take you on a full day’s exploration from Honolulu.

This is the ‘windward’ side of the island and it really is a wild and windswept place.

Less explored than the west and north shores, the eastern coast is home to the most typically volcanic and tropical scenery on Oahu.

There are fewer resorts and hotels here, but that’s just fine because it means the coast is a lot more relaxed and quiet, especially in comparison to places like Waikiki.

Available tour : Hawaii: Tour along the east coast of O’ahu

11. Pineapple Plantations

Pineapple Plantation, Oahu

An unusual day trip from Honolulu but a much-loved favorite among visitors to the city is a trip to the surrounding pineapple plantations.

The most famous is the Dole Plantation, a family-friendly affair where you can enjoy the delights of some of the world’s sweetest and juiciest pineapples, grown in perfect conditions in the fertile volcanic soil that’s found here.

12. The Valley of the Temples

The Valley of the Temples, Oahu

Found on the eastern side of Oahu, The Valley of the Temples is a green and verdant area of the island, framed by mountains and forest.

It’s an unusual attraction, in that throughout this protected park, hundreds of different temples, shrines, and churches have been constructed over the years.

You will find Christian cathedrals next to Buddhist temples, making for an enlightening experience.

13. Waimea Waterfall

Waimea Waterfall, Oahu

Waimea Waterfall is hidden in the jungles of the North Shore and a hike to Waimea Waterfall is an epic day trip to make.

Strap on your boots and hit the trail to walk through the excellent and pristine natural surroundings of Hawaii’s landscapes and check out this beautiful, cascading waterfall.

14. Manoa Falls

Manoa Falls, Oahu

Another incredible waterfall to see while staying in Honolulu is the Manoa Falls.

This rocky, green waterfall rises 150-feet from the jungle floor and the hike here is sweaty but not too challenging, making it an excellent, accessible day trip from the nearby city.

Suggested tour : Half-Day Hawaii’s Manoa Waterfall Hiking Tour

15. Volcanoes National Park

Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park

Take a trip to the Big Island, to Hawaii itself to experience the volcanic nature of this Pacific Archipelago.

This is one of the most incredible things to do while visiting the state, as this national park is full of craters, lava flows, and even active volcanoes.

Explore 'The Gathering Place' in a Day

Oahu 1-day itinerary suggestions.

Known as the heart of Hawaii, Oahu is one of the eight main islands in the Hawaiian chain and home to five regions: Honolulu, the state capital, Central Oahu, Leeward Coast, North Shore, and Windward Coast. Whether you want to soak up the sun or shop ‘til you drop, Oahu offers a wide range of things to do. From seaside seekers to history buffs, the island is open for exploration.

With the nickname “The Gathering Place,” Oahu strikes the perfect balance between surf ‘n’ sand and city life. Bringing together people of all types, who share a love for the outdoors, the island engages locals, tourists, and travelers alike. At the top of the list, its beautiful backdrop is a fit for your next family trip, couples retreat, or solo getaway. For those on the clock, check out the following ways to make the most of your time away.

How to use our Oahu itineraries for your trip

Oahu 'pack-and-go' wayfinder guides for daily excursions.

Ultimately, we’ve designed our Oahu itineraries around a set number of on-island Oahu days: offering one (this page), two, three, four, five, six, and seven-day itineraries for exploring the island, soaking in the best sights, and ensuring your precious time (and potentially money) on Oahu are used wisely. We’ve tried to balance our itineraries between those who seek adventure and those looking to find a good beach and relax. Overall, we want your experience to be exactly what you’ve dreamed of when planning your Oahu trip.

For each island, including Oahu, we’ve attempted to split up the itinerary days by sorting attractions according to their geographic proximity; i.e., on East (Windward) Oahu day, you’d explore the best of west Oahu’s attractions, beaches, and activities. Our itineraries are not meant to be followed consecutively necessarily, which would probably be exhausting, but instead as a grab-and-go resource for ‘mapping’ your trip - think of us as a Wayfinder’s guide to Oahu . We always like to travel by making day-by-day plans, putting the most important attractions and activities (the must-see and do) upfront, and if the weather doesn’t cooperate one of those days, we switch that day with another. That way, we always get to the important stuff first, and if we have to skip anything, it’s ideally the minor attractions only.

Must See Oahu Sights & Attractions

Pearl harbor (uss arizona & missouri).

Still an active U.S. naval base, Pearl Harbor is a National Historic Landmark that tells the story of one of the most memorable (and deadliest) attacks in the history of the country. From beginning to end, the landmark re-lives December 7, 1941: “a day that will live in infamy,” sheds light on the tragic events of World War II and reminds us of all of the lives lost.

Made up of five different sites, Pearl Harbor offers a glimpse back through film, first-hand stories from survivors, a scarred airplane hangar and the sunken hull of the USS Arizona. While it’s possible to take in all of the sites in several hours, it’s best not to rush and make a full day of it. Located 30 minutes away, a long list of guided tours is available with pick-up and drop-off in Waikiki . A few things to keep in mind, while planning your visit : parking, admission, hours, storage fees and reservations.

Our Pearl Harbor Suggestions

Punchbowl national cemetary.

Located in a long-extinct volcano called the Punchbowl Crater, “ The Punchbowl ” is a military resting place for close to 53,000 veterans. Honoring those who have proudly served their country, the memorial features “the sacrifices and achievements of the American Armed Forces and commemorates the soldiers of the 20th-century wars, including those who were lost during the attack at Pearl Harbor.”

Described as serene and poignant, with lush shades of green, The National Cemetery of the Pacific provides visitors daily entrance, free admission, a memorial pathway, a natural setting to give thanks and reflect and a panoramic view of Honolulu.

Diamond Head Crater

One of Hawaii’s most famous landmarks, Diamond Head is an iconic state monument and more than a 100,000-year-old crater. Designated a National Natural Landmark in 1968, it’s a top feature of the Honolulu skyline.

Byodo-In Temple

The Byodo-In Temple is a UN World Heritage Site celebrating the 100-year anniversary of the first Japanese immigrants landing in Hawaii. Situated at the bottom of the Ko’olau Mountains, this is a stunning piece of architecture you won’t want to miss. As a non-denominational temple, they welcome people of all faith to enjoy. With lush, beautiful landscaping, and exquisite details, this is a popular spot for Japanese tourists as well as people from all walks of life. It’s also a popular spot for destination weddings thanks, in part, to its peaceful ambiance and gorgeous surroundings.

Must See Oahu Beaches

Hanauma bay.

For travelers and tourists seeking a little more adventure, head to Hanauma Bay for snorkeling and scuba diving. Those hitting the water with experienced instructors can expect to see schools of colorful tropical fish and over 350 species of marine life. With more than 50 green sea turtles calling Hanauma Bay home, keep an eye out for at least one of the friendly creatures.

Lanikai Beach

For a more relaxed day at the beach, make your way to Lanikai Beach . Located in the town of Kailua, on the east coast of the island, its white sand and crystal clear water overlook the Mokulua Islands. A favorite among locals, the mile-long and family-friendly beach is known to attract kayakers and sunbathers.

Must Do Oahu Hike

Diamond head hiking trail.

One of the most accessible hiking trails in Oahu. Only a short drive from Waikiki, getting to the top of Diamond Head involves taking on two sets of stairs, underground tunnels, and old military bunkers. However, the snap-worthy view from the top will quickly make up for your breaking a sweat and aching muscles.

Whether your style of travel is laidback or on the go, Oahu provides visitors with the best of both of worlds. Balance a history lesson in the morning with some fun in the sun in the afternoon and leave the island with a one-of-a-kind experience.

How to get out of Honolulu

Your time spent visiting Honolulu should be relaxing and stress-free, and since the city has a simple and efficient public transportation system that should be the case. Buses are one of the most common ways of getting around and can bring you to most of the beaches and other places around the city, although they do not go all the way to some of the trailheads for hikes. There is also a hop-on hop-off bus that can bring you to all of the main attractions around the city.

A good way to get around inside the city limits is by using a moped or bicycle, or even by walking! Honolulu is a lovely place with nice weather year round, so spending time outside is always pleasant. As for getting around to day trips from Honolulu, you may have to rent a car if the buses do not travel to where you want to go. You will always have the option of hiring a taxi as well.

From Honolulu to Kilauea Volcano

As the most active volcano in the world, Kilauea is one of the most impressive landmarks on the entire island. It is located inside an incredible national park with otherworldly landscapes that are magical to explore in person, especially if you are someone who enjoys hiking and being active. The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park features banks of steaming sulfur and a lake made of hardened lava that can all be trekked if you are feeling up to the challenge.

Make sure to walk along the Chain of Craters Road; there are some really amazing formations that offer a unique sort of natural beauty. There are related activities outside of the park limits as well, like the Pohoiki black sand beach that was created in 2018 after Kilauea had a four month-long eruption. The Pahoa Lava Zone Museum can teach you a lot about the natural phenomena, too.

How to get to Kilauea Volcano

The volcano is situated near Hilo and can be reached by a short 50 minute flight followed by a 45 minute car ride. There are also guided tours that can bring you all the way there from Honolulu.

From Honolulu to Diamond Head Crater

Diamond Head Crater is hard to miss, and you will definitely catch glimpses of it as you explore Honolulu. This imposing place is made up of a massive volcanic cone and there are many tours and hikes that can be taken to get to its summit. The hike can be challenging so be prepared by wearing comfortable shoes and clothing, as well as by bringing a water bottle. Once you reach the top you will get to admire fantastic views of the island all around you and it is definitely worth the journey.

You can feel safe hiking up Diamond Head Crater since the volcano is dormant. In fact, Diamond Head has not erupted for nearly 150,000 years! It has a fascinating history and experts believe that it is monogenetic, meaning that it will never erupt again, but it is still an incredibly cool place to visit. We suggest beginning the trek early in the morning as there will be fewer people and the hot weather will be more bearable.

How to get to Diamond Head Crater

You will need to drive yourself to reach the hike trailhead, although the buses might be able to get you close enough to walk. The drive is short and simple taking less than 20 minutes from the city center.

Tide pools come and go with the seasons and it is a great spot for the whole family to have fun in the sun. If you like hiking you should consider trekking up the oldest volcano of Oahu in Keanu Point State Park!

The hike is not too challenging and should take about an hour, although you won't want to rush since there are incredible views to admire along the way. It is a beautiful spot to be during the sunset as the rugged mountains and ocean are stunning at that time of day. The Hawaiian monk seal, which is endangered, might also make an appearance!

One of the hidden gems of Oahu is the beautiful Manoa Falls. Rising up from the floor of a jungle and reaching an incredible 150 feet high, these waterfalls are definitely a sight that you will remember long after your trip to Honolulu has ended. You will want to bring a camera with you to capture the beauty of the area, but pack light since you will need to hike to get there.

One Day in Honolulu Itinerary – How to Spend a Perfect Day in Honolulu, Hawaii

If there’s one place in the world that epitomizes the idea of exotic islands, welcoming locals and everything else one needs for a perfect location, it’s Hawaii. Along with its capital city Honolulu, it welcomes countless tourists every single years, both from all over the United States and all over the world. As a matter of fact, the city is the perfect base from which to explore these beautiful islands, but it too has a whole lot to offer. Spend a day here and you’ll be amazed by the things you can do and see in Honolulu.

One day in Honolulu Itinerary

What’s the best time to visit Honolulu?

The weather in Honolulu is pretty constant – it’s warm throughout the year, so you can view the city as a year-round destination without any problems. The climate is tropical, which means a fair amount of humidity too, something to be mindful of, for sure. Still, summers are quite dry and perfect for a vacation, so that’s probably the best time to visit Honolulu.

Diamond Head, Honolulu

Festivals and events can therefore play a bigger role in your decision when to come. Honolulu Festival is in early March, and in June you have the big King Kamehameha Celebration and the very interesting Pan-Pacific Festival . In September, another very celebrated event takes place because it’s time for the Okinawan Festival . In any case, the events here allow you to learn a lot about the numerous Pacific cultures that are in some way connected to the islands, so you really should set some time aside and visit them if you’re in town.

Pan-Pacific Parade, Honolulu

A few facts about Honolulu

The name Honolulu actually means “safe harbour” in Hawaiian language, which certainly fits the city perfectly. Also, it is the capital of the state of Hawaii, the last state to become incorporated into the United States. Since Hawaii was actually an independent kingdom in the past, Honolulu is the only city in the country with a genuine royal palace. Interestingly, this is also the second most populous city (Honolulu has about 350,000 people) in the region of Polynesia, trailing only Auckland, New Zealand in that respect.

Downtown, Honolulu

Apart from that, Honolulu is also one of the safest cities in the US, with one of the highest standards of living in the world, so you will be enjoying a lot more than just beautiful nature.

Downtown Honolulu

One Day in Honolulu Itinerary – Best things to do in Honolulu, Hawaii

Follow this guide and make the most of your trip even if you’re short on time. These are the best sights and things to do during your one day in Honolulu.

Start your day nice and easy

You’re here on vacation, so take things nice and slowly and go grab a cup of coffee first and soak in the city’s vibe. One of the best places to do that is Arvo Cafe, a great little coffee shop where you can get some great cups of Joe and some nice T-shirts as a souvenir. Right next door is Moku Kitchen , a great place to grab brunch since they open at 11 AM.

Yes, hiking! Once you’re all done with your morning ritual, head to Manoa Falls Trail , a gorgeous trail surrounded by lush greenery that ends with a fantastic waterfall. You can reach it in about 15 minutes by car, the views are fantastic, and the hike is really not too demanding, so this is easily one of the best things to do in Honolulu if you want to enjoy nature. It can get muddy, though, so maybe don’t wear your best shoes.

Manoa Falls Trail, Honolulu

Hit the beach

Obviously, no day in Honolulu is complete without going to the beach. So what to do if you want to just jump in? There are a few great beaches right in the city centre, like the famous Waikiki Beach and Ala Moana Beach .

Waikiki Beach, Honolulu

Ala Moana is closer to the coffee shop mentioned above, but Waikiki has a great surfing school you can visit and get a crash course in what is pretty much a national pastime around here. If you don’t want to stick to the city centre, Lanikai Beach is extremely beautiful, but you’ll need a car to reach it.

Waikiki Beach, Honolulu

Have lunch and do some shopping

International Market Place is where you want to go for lunch, especially if you want to shop, too. This outdoor shopping mall is in Waikiki, so a big advantage is that it’s close to the beach.

International Market Place, Honolulu

Shops abound, plus there are plenty of good choices when it comes to eating – from sushi and seafood to pizzas and good old burgers. Mexican, Japanese, American and Italian cuisines are all represented, so you’re bound to find something tasty.

International Market Place, Honolulu

Visit the Polynesian Cultural Centre

Your one day in Honolulu doesn’t have to be restricted just to the city. Head to the northern side of Oahu and find the Polynesian Cultural Centre . It may take about an hour to get there, but it’s well worth it. This excellent theme park will teach you a whole lot about Polynesian cultures, namely Tonga, Tahiti, Samoa, Aotearoa, Fiji and, of course, Hawaii. Loads of fun, since there are plenty of things to do and activities you can participate in. Be warned, it’s easy to spend a whole day here!

Polynesian Cultural Center, Honolulu

Enjoy more beaches

After you finish with the cultural centre, hit the beach once again. Northern part of Oahu has some truly spectacular places to visit, including Sunset Beach , Keiki Beach and Waimea Bay . Many consider these to be the very best beaches on the island, so don’t miss your chance to see them. If you have a car with you, you can head about 20km west for some skydiving at Skydive Hawaii’s centre.

Waimea Bay, Honolulu

End your day with a dinner cruise

If you have followed this itinerary, your one day in Honolulu has certainly been an active one, which means it’s time to just chill out an enjoy at the end. The best way to do that is to book a dinner cruise and sail into the sunset, maybe with a nice cocktail in hand. You will be able to soak in the beauty of this place to the fullest, and it really seems like the best thing to do to end a wonderful day, especially if you’re here with your significant other.

What to do in Honolulu at night?

On the other hand, if you still have some energy, it’s time to party! You don’t have to worry about what to do in Honolulu at night because the city has quite a lot to offer, as you would expect from a destination like this. Bar 35 is a great place, for example, especially for those of you who want to be sure they have always some interesting beers nearby. Duke’s Waikiki has a great Barefoot Bar which will offer you exactly the experience you want from Hawaii – evenings near the ocean and on a sandy beach. Finally, Mai Tai is a great place to just take it easy and sip a nice cocktail or two.

Attention nature lovers! Hawaii’s big island is an incredibly diverse place with loads of fascinating things to see and places to visit, so you really mustn’t miss this tour. Beaches of black sand surrounded by palm trees will make you feel you’re in paradise, and there is also a chance you see sea turtles enjoying the sun. Apart from that, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is also a must, plus there are plenty of fascinating waterfalls, too.

Pearl Harbour

WW2 fanatics will surely want to see this, but other visitors shouldn’t miss it, either. It’s one of the best things to see when in Honolulu. You can visit USS Arizona Memorial and pay homage to the biggest disaster of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour. Furthermore, there are two interesting museums you can visit and actual footage of the attack you can see. While this is usually not a full day trip, it is nevertheless very much worth it.

Paradise Cove

Probably the most famous luau around, Paradise Cove Luau is not so much a day trip from Honolulu as an evening trip. Hula dancers , great food, loads of games and contests, the Shower of Flowers , an incredible sunset… all that and more awaits you here. This is just good clean fun all the way, so if you’re looking for a way to party like a local, just book this. You’ll love it!

Why not just explore Oahu, the island on which Honolulu is located? There are so many things to see around there that it will make for an excellent day trip. You can visit the Byodo-In Temple , a beautiful edifice built fully in Japanese style, check out pineapple plantations and taste their fresh an delicious products, climb the Diamond Head volcano… and that’s just the beginning!

Extra tips for visiting Honolulu

  • Souvenirs at the airport and hotels are much more expensive than those in town. Buy a souvenir as you’re exploring the city or maybe at one of the places you will visit.
  • Renting a car is a good idea to get around. Sure, there’s Uber and Lyft you can take, but if you’re out for exploring as much as possible, renting car is the solution because there really are so many places to see and visit in Honolulu.
  • Be careful with the fees. The so-called nightly resort fees, as well as parking fees are often not included in the hotel price and you will have to pay them when checking out.
  • Wind can get sand into your gadgets like cameras and phones. Protect them with something like a ziplock bag.

Pin for later!

Overall rating

We really enjoyed our trip. Our guide Jessica was very entertaining and knowledgeable. Maui is beautiful. Glad we flew over for the day

Although a very long day on the bus and limited stops due to narrow roads and busy traffic, when we were able to stop at certain locations it was absolutely breathtaking. To really take in the full affect of the drop ... and photos over the cliff, I would suggest sitting on the left side of the bus if you’re able. Make sure you have a strong stomach, aren’t afraid of heights and able to withstand the winding roads, the photos you capture on this trip are well worth the adventure

5th deadliest road in the world

this tour is not for the faint of heart, The road lives up to its' reputation! It is a bit long but worth every minute. The guide was knowledgeable and an excellent driver. The lunch provided was not very good and we ... recommended that be changed in the near future.

Best Time to Vist Honolulu

Updated : May 01, 2024

AAA Travel Editor, WA

Table of contents, december to mid-april: peak season, mid-april to mid-june: shoulder season, mid-june to august: peak season, september to november: shoulder season, plan your trip to honolulu with aaa..

When is the best time of year to visit Honolulu , capital and biggest city in Hawai’i? The O’ahu hub offers a plethora of attractions , from the internationally renowned beachfront of Waikiki and the craggy visage of Diamond Head to an epic lineup of restaurants, some outstanding museums (such as the Bishop Museum ) and botanical gardens and multiple major live-performance venues.

All of those are year-round draws, no question and given O’ahu’s tropical climate—and, furthermore, Honolulu’s rain shadowed position on the island’s leeward side—the weather is, let's face it, always pretty fabulous. Indeed, this is a two-season climate with only minimal differences in temperature between the winter/"low-sun" half and the summer/"high-sun" half. Rainfall varies somewhat more strongly between the seasons, but even in the rainiest months Honolulu delivers loads of sunshine, with extended downpours rarer than not.

This means that, overall, other considerations rather than weather determine the best Honolulu time of year for a given traveler’s needs and preferences: from relative levels of crowds and seasonal fluctuations in prices to whale-watching opportunities. We’ll dig into these factors in the following guide on when to visit Honolulu, which breaks down the O’ahu year by relative visitation into two peak seasons and two shoulder seasons. We hope it helps you with your Honolulu trip-planning .

day trips honolulu

  • Pros: Peak season for big-wave surfing and whale-watching; lots of festivals and other events; warm, pleasant “winter” weather compared to much of the U.S.
  • Cons: Higher rates and prices; crowds; higher potential for heavier rain

The heart of O’ahu’s “winter” ( Hoo-ilo ) season, this stretch of the calendar is one of two high seasons for tourism and, generally, the busiest. After all, it overlaps with the end-of-the-year holidays as well as spring break and also coincides with wintry weather in more northerly climes: Many from mainland North America (and other areas) flee to Hawai’i this time of year for a break from snow, ice and bone-rattling cold.

And a break is indeed what they get, on account Honolulu—like the rest of the Hawai’ian Islands—experiences a decidedly different sort of winter season than the continental U.S. Winter temperatures on O’ahu typically range between lows in the low 60s F and highs in the upper 70s to low 80s, only marginally cooler than the summer/high-sun weather. We’re talking average monthly temperatures in the coldest months of January and February in the low 70s—not bad.

This is also the rainy season, technically and winter storms such as Kona systems can indeed bring bouts of heavy rainfall. But such rainstorms are often of short duration, lasting perhaps a few hours to a couple of days. They’re unlikely to spoil your vacation, unless you’re only in Honolulu for a day or two; winter here serves up lots of sunshine and prime beachgoing weather.

The burly northerly swells of winter make this the season of pro-level, big-wave surfing on Oahu’s North Shore. Even if you’re not an elite board-rider, you might consider a trip out of Honolulu to go watch the massive breakers and the surfers who tackle them on the other side of the island.

This is also the best time to see humpback whales in O’ahu waters; the leviathans’ journey to the Hawai’ian Islands from Alaska to breed and calve in these balmy channels. Watch for humpbacks from beaches, headlands and other coastal vantages or on whale-watching cruises (many of which depart from Honolulu).

There are plenty of annual events on the winter calendar in and around Honolulu, including O’ahu surfing competitions such as the Volcom Pipe Pro at the North Shore’s celebrated Banzai Pipeline reef break, Hawai’i’s largest charity golf tourney (the Sony Open, in January) and the Honolulu Festival in March, which celebrates Hawai’ian, Pacific and Asian cultures.

It goes without saying that this peak tourism season in Honolulu comes, accordingly, with higher prices for just about everything; the need to book accommodations, dining reservations and the like well in advance; and heavier crowds and traffic.

day trips honolulu

  • Pros: Less crowded; less expensive; continued whale-watching opportunities; near-perfect weather
  • Cons: Fewer festivals and events underway

The “spring” shoulder season is one of the best times to visit Honolulu. With the crowds of winter in the rear-view mirror, you’ll find a bit more elbow room on the sands of Waikiki Beach and other popular destinations. Humpback whales continue to be visible in O’ahu waters in April and May, extending the world-class whale-watching for which Hawai’i is known into springtime.

Another reason why this is a contender for the best time of year to visit Honolulu? The weather, which is all-around stellar: Daily temperatures range roughly between the mid-60s and the low 80s and rain showers are rare indeed. Hikers are less likely to run into mud and swollen creeks, particularly in leeward Oahu.

Ocean waters are calming down, too, expanding opportunities for swimming, snorkeling and beginner-level surfing. (Bear in mind you can always find such opportunities in Honolulu, but they’re more seasonal along, for example, the Oahu North Shore, battered as it is during the winter by those gnarly waves.)

Events-wise, this spring window in Honolulu is something of a lull, but you will find some happenings underway, not least the Waikiki Spam Jam.

day trips honolulu

  • Pros: Reliably warm, dry, sunny weather; great season for hiking, swimming, snorkeling, SUP; lots of festivals and events
  • Cons: Higher prices and more crowds again

The heart of summer is another top season to visit Honolulu, no question. That’s primarily because families with school-age children are taking advantage of summer vacations. So expect plenty of crowds, pricier airfare and the potential for booked-up lodgings, tours or cruises.

The high-sun weather on O’ahu is pretty ideal. The average temperature of Honolulu’s all-around warmest month, August, is about 80 degrees or so. This is the dry season, too, with very scanty precipitation and a lot of sunshine.

Calm summer waters make for ideal swimming, snorkeling, paddling and other ocean fun and hiking conditions tend to be excellent. And there’s a busy lineup of events, from the King Kamehameha Festival in June and the Hawaii State Farm Fair in July to Waikiki’s Duke Kahanamoku Ocean Festival in August.

day trips honolulu

  • Pros: Fewer crowds; lower prices; lots of annual events
  • Cons: Rain becomes more frequent; hurricane season

Oahu’s “fall” shoulder season is another great time to visit Honolulu. You’ll find the city and the island less crowded and less pricey, while the weather remains generally postcard perfect. That said, precipitation tends to increase in October, ushering in the start of the rainy season. This is also the main window for hurricanes, but in fact these tropical cyclones are quite rare in the Hawai’ian Islands, with direct hits few and far between.

There are quite a few high-profile annual events around Oahu during the fall stretch, another reason to visit this time of year. They include the Aloha Festivals, an epic celebration of Hawai’ian culture and heritage, as well as the Hawai’i Food & Wine Festival, the Hawai’ian international Film Festival and Hawai’i Fashion Week. As big-wave surfing season gets underway by November, surf competitions such as the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing also crank up.

Why not let the homeless design the system, they are just as qualified as who is there. They will increase ridership

Surferdude · 22 hours ago

Its utterly unbelievable how this rail boondoggle never ends… No riders, construction cost over runs, construction infrastructure snafus, poor leadership from day one & it goes on and on… The only winners are contractors building it and politicians two decades ago who supported rail and garnered votes from it… They stated we have a "mandate" - that mandate was 51% for & 49% against - not exactly a mandate. Those of us who opposed can now say "we told you so" as a consolation… sad just sad - we could have most likely built many brand new public school campuses with what it will cost us to finish rail… As my buddy calls it "The Mufi Choo Choo Train" .

pcbroda · 1 day ago

Don't blame her. It doesn't matter much who is in charge at HART. Rail is a fail. The emperor has no clothes. Adding another verse to the blame song resolves nothing. So many people have made so much money that nobody can tell the truth about it, but we all know it. I dare us as a community to face the music and staunch the bleeding.

Las Vegas Advisor: New ‘NBA-ready arena’ proposed along the Strip

By Anthony Curtis

A just-launched Las Vegas-based real estate company called LVXP has announced plans to build an “experiential mixed-use development” on the 27-acre former site of the Wet’n’Wild water park. The project would include what’s being touted as “the city’s tallest resort” with 2,500 rooms and a “state-of-the-art NBA-ready arena.”

If that sounds familiar, it should: This is almost the same plan targeting the same location as was proposed more than a decade ago: the never-materialized All Net Arena. Addressing the similarities, the LVXP CEO commented, “We’re the antithesis of the previous project.” No information about budget or timeline was divulged.

Trailer casino: A “trailer casino” — a temporary gambling area created to preserve a gaming license — is scheduled for May 14 on the site of the former Moulin Rouge in North Las Vegas. Trailer casinos are so named because machines are staged in a trailer for eight hours, then taken away. The machines will be open for play starting at 6 a.m.

Downtown rocks: The Downtown Rocks free concert series begins this month, with several weekend dates running through October. This year’s lineup includes Seether (May 28); Hoobastank and Soul Asylum (June 8); Sebastian Bach (July 20), and Sublime (Oct. 5), with other bands planned but not announced. All shows take place on the Fremont Street Experience stages.

Question: What’s the status of the law prohibiting stopping on pedestrian bridges? Are you allowed to stop briefly to take photos?

Answer: The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit challenging the new county ordinance that prohibits stopping on pedestrian bridges over the Strip. That hasn’t been resolved, but regardless of the outcome, you won’t be cited for taking photos. The law is aimed at panhandlers and the like who set up shop on the walkways.

The best days to fly around the Fourth of July this year

( NerdWallet ) – For folks planning July Fourth vacations, prepare for crowds. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screened a record number of passengers in 2023, and those records are likely to be broken in 2024. In fact, in the first two months of 2024, travel volumes were roughly 6% higher than the same period in 2023, according to the TSA.

With the expected big crowds in mind, are some days better for air travel than others?

In 2024, July Fourth falls on a Thursday, which puts a wrench in predicting travel crowds. Will folks take the Friday after off to enjoy the long weekend? Or will they decide their vacation time is best used for another holiday?

Here’s some guidance around booking July Fourth weekend air travel in 2024, how you might be able to avoid the crowds — and potentially save money on airfare .

The best and worst days to fly July Fourth weekend

Are airports busy on July Fourth? NerdWallet analyzed TSA data showing the number of passengers screened at its U.S. checkpoints over the past three years, homing in on the seven days before and after July Fourth, to find the busiest days to fly.

The worst days to fly: To avoid crowds, don’t fly the Friday before July Fourth. In each of the past three years, the Friday before July Fourth was the busiest travel day before the Fourth of July weekend.

For post-holiday travel, the Sunday after ranks as the busiest day to fly.

The best days to fly: Typically, July Fourth is the least busy day to fly. On July Fourth of last year, airport crowds averaged just 70% of what they were relative to the busiest travel day, which was the Friday before July Fourth (June 30, 2023).

But if you’d rather spend July Fourth celebrating — and not in an airport — turn to Tuesday. The Tuesdays before and after the holiday rank among the least busy days to fly during July Fourth week.

The rankings of best and worst days to fly for July Fourth follow year-round travel patterns. No matter when you’re traveling, Fridays are, on average, the busiest day to fly, and Tuesdays are, on average, the least busy days to fly.

How this year’s Thursday holiday might impact long weekends

July Fourth falls on a Thursday, so people intending to travel for the holiday will likely take the next day, Friday, off and make it a long weekend. But given how few people are willing to travel on Independence Day, when will people actually fly?

The last time July Fourth fell on a Thursday was in 2019. Here’s a look at travel crowds by day in 2019, ranked from most to least crowded:

  • Sunday after, July 7 (most crowded).
  • Monday after, July 8.
  • Friday before, June 28.
  • Thursday before, June 27.
  • Sunday before, June 30.
  • Thursday after, July 11.
  • Wednesday before, July 3.
  • Wednesday after, July 10.
  • Tuesday after, July 9.
  • Monday before, July 1.
  • Saturday before, June 29.
  • Tuesday before, July 2.
  • Saturday after, July 6.
  • Friday after, July 5.
  • Thursday, July Fourth (least crowded).

In 2019, the July Fourth holiday was the least busy day to fly. Meanwhile, July 5, the day after the holiday, wasn’t busy either. That bucks the usual trend of Friday being the busiest travel day of the week. When it comes to July Fourth weekend travel, most people are already set in their locations by Friday.

But there’s one day that people are definitely crowding airports, and that’s the Sunday after July Fourth. Flying this day will cost you, too. According to travel booking app Hopper’s 2024 Travel Booking Hacks report, Sunday is the most expensive day to fly in the U.S., with airfares averaging 15% more than midweek departures.

The smarter, cheaper Fourth of July travel itinerary in 2024

Following typical July Fourth holiday travel patterns could mean costs in terms of airfare and time spent waiting in line at the airport. Deviate from that schedule to find lighter crowds and perhaps better July Fourth flight deals, too. Try these travel days instead:

Fly on July Fourth

If you don’t mind traveling on the holiday, you’re looking at the single emptiest air travel day of the period analyzed.

Do one better by flying early on the holiday. Hopper’s spring 2023 Flight Disruption Outlook found that flights that depart from 5 a.m. to 8 a.m. are half as likely to be delayed as flights with scheduled departure times after 9 a.m.

Plus, a morning flight improves your odds of catching the fireworks at your final destination.

Embrace Saturday travel

Rather than rush out from work on the Friday afternoon before the holiday to jump on a flight, relax at home that evening and depart Saturday morning before instead. Simply shifting your trip by one day could likely result in going from one of the busiest to lightest travel days of the July Fourth travel period.

The same goes for returning home. While it can be tempting to extend your trip as long as possible before you have to get back to work on Monday, skip the Sunday flight and fly home on Saturday instead. Bonus: You’ll have a day at home to rest and recover before the new workweek. How responsible of you.

Fly on July 5

Though Friday is typically one of the most expensive days to fly year-round, that’s unlikely to be the case this particular week.

So another option is to fly home on July 5. This allows you to still spend the holiday in your destination of choice. By returning on Friday, you’ll still have the full weekend at home to take a vacation from your vacation before Monday.
