When is the best time to cruise to Australia and New Zealand?

The seasons are reversed in the Southern Hemisphere, so the best time to cruise is from October to April. New Zealand has a shorter summer than Australia as it’s further south, so is best visited between December and March, when the days are long and sunny.

What should I pack?

Australia and New Zealand cover a vast area, so pack according to the climate zones you are visiting. Generally speaking, New Zealand is cooler than Australia. In Australia, the north is humid and tropical, and the south is more temperate, generally speaking.

Pack sunblock and a sun hat as the sun is strong here. Good walking shoes are important if you want to take advantage of the wonderful hiking in both countries.

Throughout the ship, casual resort wear, sundresses, shorts, polos, or button-downs are appropriate, paired with sandals, low heels, and loafers. In main and specialty dining, we ask guests to refrain from wearing swimsuits, see-through cover-ups or robes, bare feet, tank tops, T-shirts, and baseball caps. 

Smart Casual attire is required for entry to main dining, specialty dining, and the Celebrity Theatre. Smart Casual means you look comfortable yet tasteful in a dress, skirt, long pants, or jeans with a stylish top or button-down. Shorts and flip-flops are not considered Smart Casual. 

Each itinerary features one to two “formal” nights that we call Evening Chic. Evening Chic means you dress to impress, glamorous and sophisticated in your own way, with a cocktail dress, skirt, slacks, or designer jeans, an elegant dress top, or blazer—some guests even pack a tuxedo or gown for onboard photos. 

The daily program, delivered to your stateroom and available at the Guest Relations Desk, will be your guide to the correct attire each evening. If you do not wish to participate in Evening Chic, Smart Casual attire is acceptable for dining and attending the theater.

Do I need a visa or any other documentation to visit Australia and New Zealand?

You will need a valid passport to visit Australia and New Zealand. It is the responsibility of each guest to identify and obtain all required travel documents and have them available at the pier when necessary. Before leaving home, take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the required travel documents you will be asked to provide prior to boarding the ship. You’ll find more information here . 

Most visitors to Australia and New Zealand need an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA), an electronic, label-free visa obtainable for a small fee. You must apply for this in advance of travel.

What types of itineraries are available?

We offer a wide range of itineraries to Australia, New Zealand, and beyond. You could try a short three- or four-night cruise from Sydney, or a six-night voyage that gives you an overnight in artsy, outdoorsy Hobart, the capital of Tasmania. Australia wine cruises take you to some of the country’s top wine-growing areas, including Melbourne’s Yarra Valley and the Barossa Valley outside Adelaide.

Some Sydney cruises head north to the spectacular Great Barrier Reef , with stops at Airlie Beach and Cairns, as well as Brisbane and Port Douglas.

We also offer several itineraries that take in both Australia and New Zealand. A 10- or 11-night cruise between Auckland and Sydney visits eight or more different locations in New Zealand, including Dunedin, Christchurch, Wellington, and the serene Milford Sound. You could also opt for a 12-night cruise round-trip from Sydney that almost circumnavigates New Zealand.

You can sail from Australia and New Zealand to the dreamy South Pacific, too, visiting New Caledonia and Vanuatu on the state-of-the-art Celebrity Edge from Sydney. Cruises from Auckland, meanwhile, take you to Fiji and Samoa, with a day in the beautiful Bay of Islands on the way.

Finally, one-way cruises between Singapore and Sydney visit Bali, Darwin, Cairns, and Airlie Beach, giving you a taste of Asia as well as different Australian ports.

Are there specific health or quarantine regulations I should be aware of?

Both Australia and New Zealand have strict rules about the import of certain items, including seeds, plants, and some foods. While you are unlikely to be bringing such items on a cruise, it’s worth checking if in doubt.

There are no compulsory vaccines required for Australia and New Zealand unless you are coming from an area where yellow fever is prevalent, in which case you will need an inoculation certificate. If you are planning to extend your travels beyond either country, check with your physician if anything else is required.

How do I handle currency exchange between the two countries and on the ship?

Australia and New Zealand both use their own dollars (AU$ and NZD$) as currency. The two are not tied to one another and do not have the same exchange rate, so make sure you understand the value of each before traveling.

Australian dollars are not accepted in New Zealand, or vice versa, so you will need a small supply of each if you are visiting both countries. Credit cards are widely accepted in both, so you really only need cash for small purchases from market stalls or souvenir vendors.

You can change money at the Guest Services Desk on board your ship, or use an ATM in port.

What types of wildlife and natural sights can I expect to see on excursions?

Wildlife and nature are two of the primary reasons for visiting Australia and New Zealand. Depending on where you go in Australia, you could spot kangaroos and koalas. You’ll also most likely see wallabies, which are like smaller kangaroos, and wombats, a cute-faced marsupial.

Tasmanian devils are difficult to spot in the wild, but you can visit a sanctuary on an excursion in Hobart where injured or orphaned animals are rehabilitated. If you want to see penguins, Phillip Island, near Melbourne, is the place.

On the Great Barrier Reef, the coral teems with tropical marine life in dazzling colors, from clownfish to butterfly fish and surgeonfish. Sea turtles, manta rays, and marine mammals like whales and dolphins are a regular sight.

New Zealand’s wildlife includes the kiwi, the national bird, and a spectacular array of seabirds and marine mammals. 

As for natural wonders, you couldn’t be in a better part of the world. From the gorgeous vistas of Sydney Harbour to the extraordinary beauty of the Great Barrier Reef, and the pure white beaches of the Whitsundays, there are unforgettable vistas at every turn. Join a tour from Melbourne along the Great Ocean Road to see the dramatic sea stacks of the Twelve Apostles. In New Zealand, admire the serene beauty of Fiordland, where green mountains plunge straight into the glassy water, and the steaming geothermal pools around Tauranga.

What else is there to do in the region?

Both Australia and New Zealand are packed with activities, whether your interest is Aboriginal culture, art, food, or wine. In Hobart, learn about Port Arthur’s dark history as a penal colony, and explore the extraordinary Museum of Old and New Art (MONA). In Melbourne, see Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal art at the Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, or join a walking tour to admire vibrant street art. Take a behind-the-scenes tour of Sydney’s famous Opera House, and brave the Sydney Harbour Bridge climb.

In New Zealand, learn about the Scottish heritage of Dunedin, or visit the snow-capped mountains and dense forests of “Middle Earth”, the famous movie location. Learn about Maori culture and history at the fabulous Te Papa Museum in Wellington. You can also see how kiwi fruits are produced, or even spend a day on a sheep farm.

Being such a large place, Australia has a wide range of climates, so all year round, there is somewhere great to visit. 

Summer (December to February) can get very hot but is perfect for beach-going and other outdoor activities. In the far north, it is also the wet season, which can get quite humid, and some beaches may be closed due to jellyfish or 'stingers'.

Winter (June to August) is pleasant and dry in the north but can get quite cold in the south, especially in Tasmania and Victoria, where snowfall is common.

Spring and autumn are great times to visit Australia as the weather is milder but still warm enough for swimming in northern areas. 

Regardless of daytime temperatures, nights can get very cold in the desert areas of Central and Western Australia, so prepare accordingly.

The main school holiday period is from Christmas to late January and is considered the peak travel time within Australia; expect popular tourist spots to be crowded during this time.

From large malls and boutique shopping strips to weekend arts and crafts markets and vintage shops, Australia is a top place to shop. Shopping in Australia may not be cheap, but there are plenty of unique finds and original souvenirs to bring home. Before heading home, check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to import certain items back into your home country. New Zealand, for example, has strict quarantine laws.

The quality of Aboriginal art is excellent in the Top End and Central and Western Australia. Be sure to buy from reputable galleries and organizations to ensure authenticity and fair prices for artists. Community-run organizations are typically the better choice.

These precious gems are plentiful in Broome due to the booming pearling industry.

Geography and environment

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

What's the weather like in Australia?

The weather in Australia varies depending on where in the country you are. For example, winter in Victoria and Tasmania tends to be very cold (around the 50 °F -60 °F mark), whereas, if you head further north to the Northern Territory and Queensland, temperatures in the winter months are much nicer (usually around 65 °F -77 °F ).

This pattern also applies to summer, where the southern states tend to experience lower temperatures (but still warm), while the northern and western states are warmer, with temperatures reaching as high as 100 °F +.

Do I need a visa to travel to Australia?

All foreign nationals require a visa to enter Australia – excluding passport holders from  New Zealand  who can enter Australia without a visa.

Passport holders from 34 countries are eligible to apply for the Electronic Travel Authority (ETA/601), which permits multiple entry to Australia for up to three months within a 12-month period. 

All other foreign nationals will need to apply for a visitor visa (600). This permits stays of up to 12 months with the option to apply for single or multiple entry.

Is tipping customary in Australia?

Tipping isn’t mandatory in Australia; however, rounding up the bill or leaving spare change is common practice. Restaurant staff, taxi drivers and other service workers welcome tips for good service.

What is the internet access like in Australia?

Internet access is widely available in most parts of Australia, with internet cafes and Wi-Fi hot spots commonly found in urban areas. Please note that internet access won’t be available in Outback and remote areas.

Can I use my cell phone while in Australia?

Cell phone coverage is excellent in most parts of Australia, especially in large cities and urban areas. Remote, rural and mountainous places may have limited to no coverage, so be aware of this before venturing away from the city. Ensure global roaming is activated before leaving your home country if you want to use your cell phone, or you can purchase a sim card when you arrive. The provider that will have coverage in the majority of Australia is Telstra, secondly Optus and then Vodafone. A hot tip – when you are in remote areas and don’t have cell phone signal, turn your phone to flight mode which will conserve battery and prevent your phone from using data trying to search for internet signal.

What are the toilets like in Australia?

Western-style flushable toilets are the norm in Australia, and many of our campsites have proper facilities with flushing toilets. In remote areas such as the Kimberley, there is no established plumbing and therefore we have installed ‘drop toilets’. Some campsites we use are managed by the National Parks and have either eco-toilets or drop toilets, most of which are maintained regularly.

Can I drink the water in Australia?

Drinking water from taps in Australia is considered safe, unless otherwise marked. For environmental reasons, try to use a refillable water bottle rather than buying bottled water.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Australia?

Credit cards are widely accepted by shops, restaurants and cafes in Australia. Smaller establishments may only accept cash or require a minimum purchase for credit card use, so be sure to carry enough cash for smaller purchases.

What is ATM access like in Australia?

ATMs are commonly found in large cities and regional towns in Australia. ATM access will be very limited in remote areas so be aware of this before heading into national parks or the Outback.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Who are the First Nations people of Australia?

There are two distinct groups of First Nations peoples in Australia - Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait Islander people - both of which have lived on this land for centuries. While there are only two Indigenous groups, there's actually a wide range of language and location communities that are made up of Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait Islander people including the Adnyamathanha people of the Flinders Ranges (Aboriginal Australians) and the Badu people from the Near Western Group (Torres Strait Islander people). 

Is Australia LGBTQIA+ friendly?

Australia is a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers thanks to its anti-discrimination laws, diverse population and welcoming culture. There are many LGBTQIA+ friendly neighborhoods and establishments across the country, as well as a wide variety of Pride events. 

What's the transport like in Australia?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun. Depending on which trip you're on while in Australia, you may even find yourself traveling overland. 

Overland tours

Australia is a big place – like, huge.   Overland tours   involve a lot of time on the road covering long distances, and sometimes the landscape can be pretty barren, so bring a book or some tunes to keep you company.

What's the accommodation like in Australia?

Traveling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavor to provide travelers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodation as unique and traditional as possible.

Our lodge accommodation is located outside major cities, such as near the entrance to a National Park, and has its own amenities such as a restaurant or dining room. Lodges are comfortable places to stay and offer a good night's rest after a day spent exploring the natural beauty of Australia. 

Permanent Tented Campsite

There's no need to put up your tent when you spend the night in a Permanent Tented Campsite. You'll have a roof over your head and will bunk down on sleeper mats on the ground or stretcher (camp) beds, with access to a toilet/shower block. Tent sizes can vary depending on the trip you're on and the location you're visiting. Some of our permanent tented campsites are a little bit fancy, others are very simple. Sometimes you'll be sharing a tent with others in your group. 

Our bush camping experiences are as diverse as Australia itself. Some offer swag camping under cover or under the twinkling stars. You could be sleeping in a tent with access to simple toilet or shower amenities or you might not have access to a shower at all. However, the scenery at these magical spots makes it worth going without a bath for a day or so. Sometimes a trip has participatory camping where everyone pitches in to help. Other times, a staff member is on hand to look after things like cooking. 

We provide accommodation at a wide variety of hotels around Australia. Some are quite upmarket, others less so, but all of them offer a comfortable stay and ensuite facilities. 

We use hostels on some trips which means your bed could be in a twin room or a shared dorm room. Some of these rooms come with their own facilities while others have share facilities.

HOW TO DINE DOWN UNDER

'Fair dinkum' – Aussie slang for 'authentic' or 'genuine' – Australian cuisine has been influenced by England, New Zealand and even Italy. However, there's nothing more Australian than throwing some steak and snags (sausages) on a barbie (barbecue) – no prawns allowed.

POPULAR PUB GRUB

There are two dishes to order at an Aussie pub: a chicken parmigiana (called a parmi Down Under) or a burger, which will usually come topped with Australian specialities like beetroot or pineapple. Of course, you can always go for a classic steaks: Porterhouses are popular in Victoria, while rump steaks are particularly beloved in New South Wales.

THE REAL BISCUIT

Australia has some delicious sweet treats, but it's perhaps best-known for perfecting the biscuit. Try Anzac biscuits with oats and golden syrup, lamingtons – a sponge square covered in chocolate and coconut – and Tim Tams, the local favourite brand of chocolate-covered biscuits.

IT'S PIE TIME

Meat pies – with a flaky pastry crust baked around a savoury filling of ground meat (typically beef or lamb) and spices – are a traditional Australian lunch or snack found in bakeries across the country. Another favourite is the Chiko Roll, similar to a large spring roll but filled with the signature Aussie ingredients of mutton, celery, barley, rice, carrots and spices.

How to visit Australia without flying: Holland America launches new Grand Voyage

The long-haul flight can be enough to keep some U.S. travelers from visiting Australia . But a new Holland America Line itinerary will offer an alternate route.

The cruise line’s Grand Australia and New Zealand voyage will sail round-trip from San Diego, California in 2026, taking guests down under and back over 93 days.

"Our Grand Voyages are renowned for connecting guests with the world's most fascinating places while sailing roundtrip from the United States," Beth Bodensteiner, the line’s chief commercial officer, said in a news release . "Our team crafted this itinerary to show guests the parts of Australia and New Zealand they expect to visit, but also included frequently asked for, but rarely visited, ports throughout Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands."

When is Holland America’s Grand Australia and New Zealand voyage?

The cruise will depart on Jan. 4, 2026 aboard the line’s 1,432-guest Zaandam ship.

Where will the cruise sail?

The ship will visit 44 ports in 10 countries. Passengers will make their way to Hawaii first before heading to the South Pacific. The ship will then visit Australia – almost circling the country – and New Zealand, followed by Tonga and French Polynesia on the way back to San Diego.

The itinerary features two days of scenic cruising at the Great Barrier Reef and four late-night departures in Adelaide, Australia and the French Polynesian islands of Moorea, Raiatea and Huahine. Guests will also stay overnight in six ports, including Honolulu, Sydney and Auckland, giving them ample time to explore.

How much does the cruise cost?

The cruise currently starts at $17,699 per person based on double occupancy, according to Holland America’s website . Travelers who book by June 16, 2025 can get perks like a Surf Wi-Fi package, airport transfers in San Diego, a 3% pay-in-full discount and more thrown in (though they vary by stateroom category).

Why the best way to see Australia is on a cruise

K nown for its epic road and rail trips through the vast, open countryside of the dusty Outback , Australia is often overlooked by Brits as a cruise destination. Yet the world’s largest island has over 37,000 miles of coastline fronting the Southern, Pacific and Indian Oceans, plus various smaller seas. Even the locals know the appeal of the sea, with 85 per cent of Australians living within 50km of the coast.

As a result, almost every kind of cruise imaginable can be found here; be it on a mega-ship with stacks of facilities; a boutique brand with a more refined air; a luxurious riverboat; or an expedition ship that can venture to truly out-of-the-way places. And with most of Australia's key attractions and cities scattered around its fringes, explorations by cruise (preferably topped and tailed with land-based touring) can pack any number of Down Under wonders into a single trip.

I've been lucky enough to visit Australia more than a dozen times, and some of my greatest memories are of experiences that I've had from the deck of a ship. I once set sail to New Zealand from Sydney, with the tiles atop the Opera House gleaming in the sunshine as we passed, and far from land on the Great Barrier Reef, I leaned over the railings to marvel at its underwater patchwork of cobalt and turquoise in an otherwise midnight-blue sea. 

Perhaps the most incredible experience of all was a cruise in the Kimberley : the little-visited wilderness region at the top of Western Australia. It's vast and sparsely populated – bigger than Britain but with fewer residents than a mid-sized English town – and its attractions are so remarkable that they would be crowded with visitors were they easier to access. But on a small-ship sailing with Coral Expeditions, I was one of just 120 guests exploring the waterfalls, reefs and ancient rock art for which the Kimberley is famed.

At the uninhabited Lacepede Islands, we saw seabirds and turtles in mind-boggling numbers. In Talbot Bay, we powered through one-of-a-kind Horizontal Falls in a Zodiac. And at Montgomery Reef, we watched a coral-encrusted plateau seemingly rise from the sea on a falling tide. 

It wasn’t only the epic landscapes and their intriguing wildlife – humpback whales, lemon sharks, saltwater crocs – that impressed. Etched in my memory is the experience of first seeing the Wandjina (ancient rock art). These alien beings stare down from rock art galleries across the region: a symbol of the oldest continuous culture on the planet, and of the Indigenous people's long connection to the land. A land littered with surprises best experienced by boat. 

Classic Kimberley 

Remote, isolated and with little infrastructure for land-based journeys, there are few parts of the world as suited to expedition cruises as the Kimberley. Explore it with Coral Expeditions – the pioneers of cruising in the region – on a formula perfected over four decades of operations. Itineraries are timed to experience key sites at optimal tidal phases: expect to see Montgomery Reef being drained by dozens of miniature cascades, and Horizontal Falls at its powerful best.

Sydney Opera House and the Great Barrier Reef are two of Australia’s most recognisable icons. Make the festive season extra-special on a cruise along Australia’s entire south coast, taking in nine ports of call. Better still, spend Christmas Day at sea before arriving in Sydney for a two-night stay that coincides with New Year’s Eve.

Over the top 

Nobody is more qualified to share Australia’s stories than its traditional owners and custodians. On a voyage through remote Barrier Reef islands en route to Cape York and Arnhem Land, you will meet indigenous Torres Strait islanders and other Aboriginal peoples to experience their culture, art and homelands, including Garig Gunak Barlu National Park. Along the way, spy dugongs, turtles, saltwater crocodiles and the birdlife of Kakadu’s wetlands.

Murray river flow 

River cruises are rare down under, ­making an active experience on the mighty Murray – the nation’s principal waterway – all the more remarkable. Murray River Trails offers short cruises aboard a 12-berth houseboat, with a daily programme of guided walks and activities. The small-group, into-the-wild nature of the experience lends itself to wildlife encounters, with sightings of echidnas, emus, koalas and ­unusual native birds all possible. It is a fascinating insight into authentic inland Australia.

Kim and swim

The Kimberley may have beguiling blue waters, but dips in the sea are foolhardy (and forbidden) due to the dangerous saltwater crocodiles that call the region home. Sidestep that inconvenience on a voyage with Ponant, which combines classic Kimberley elements ­(Montgomery Reef, Horizontal Falls) with the little-visited Rowley Shoals – one of the world’s most sensational snorkelling and diving destinations. Located west of Broome, in the Timor Sea, these croc-free coral atolls brim with colourful sea life.

Queensland immersion

Look out for wedge-tailed shearwaters, sooty terns and noddies while passing Willis Island; spot dingoes on sandy Fraser Island; and cuddle a koala at Australia Zoo (established by the late Steve Irwin). Western wonders

Airfares to some of the most popular tourist destinations have fallen in price over the past year, according to Flight Centre.

In newly released data, the Australian travel agency revealed the average price of an international economy airfare sold in Australia has dropped 12.8 per cent.

Figures show trips to Indonesia are down 21.01 per cent, NZ down 13.03 per cent and the US also down 12.45 per cent.

The UK has seen a decrease of 8.05 per cent, while European destinations France, Germany and Spain are down 7.91 per cent, 6.9 per cent and 6.03 per cent, respectively.

The figures are based on flights between January and March last year, compared to the same time this year.

“In fantastic news for travellers the latest data shows the average cost of an international airfare is down almost 13 per cent when compared to this time last year,” Flight Centre global managing director Andrew Stark told news.com.au.

“What that means in real figures is that an economy return airfare between Sydney and Bali would’ve cost on average $1010 this time last year, now it will now set you back under $800.”

Mr Stark said that while it would have cost around $2300 to get to the US, it’s now closer to the $2000 mark, according to Flight Centre figures.

He attributed it to increased competition and capacity.

“It’s vital that there is active competition between the airlines and the more we see of it, the more likely we are to see cheaper airfares, more destination options and a better experience for consumers.”

It comes as Qantas announced on Tuesday it will fly Brisbane to Manila for the first time in 10 years , and fire up more flights to Singapore and India.

However, it has had to ditch its Sydney to Shanghai route.

“Since covid, the demand for travel between Australia and China has not recovered as strongly as expected,” Qantas International chief executive Cam Wallace said.

“In some months, our flights to and from Shanghai have been operating around half full.”

Sydney to Singapore will increase from 14 to 17 return flights a week and Sydney to Bengaluru increases from five a week to seven; both subject to government and regulator approval.

Meanwhile, on the domestic front, Mr Stark said airfares have stabilised year on year.

“But it’s important to note that they are slightly ahead of the cost cycle because capacity within Australia was faster to return to the market,” Mr Stark explained.

“When it comes to getting the best prices airfares, as a general rule the further in advance you book the better, but keep a close eye on sale periods and talk to your travel agent to get the best deal.”

It comes as the Australian travel agency launches one of its biggest ever sales with travellers able to save on top of the already reduced airfares.

“Our Big Red Sale is offering half price holidays, so in addition to cheaper flights like our $1099 return airfare to London, you can save up to 50 per cent on cruising, touring and holiday packages,” Mr Stark said.

“It’s the biggest savings for customers we’ve ever been able to draw together at the same time.

The Big Red Sale is on until June 5, 2024.

This week, Qantas and Virgin also announced huge sales across Australia with thousands of seats dropping well below $200.

On Qantas, prices start from just $105 (if flying from Launceston to Melbourne) and $109 (if you’re heading out of Ballina bound for Sydney).

The sale is on until May 20 unless sold out prior, with other highlights including Coffs Harbour to Sydney from $129, Cairns to Townsville from $139 and Adelaide to Kangaroo Island from $139 one way.
