How Much Does Travel Insurance Cost in 2024?

The average cost of travel insurance  .

Travel insurance has the potential to cover unexpected expenses and offer you clarity in the face of uncertainty. But before you reap the benefits, you've got to pay for your policy. If you're wondering, "How much does travel insurance cost?" You're not alone. We'll reveal that number, explain factors contributing to the cost of travel insurance, and more. Hint: it's affordable on virtually every travel budget and is well worth every cent.

Let's get right into it!

How Much Does Travel Insurance Cost?

A good rule of thumb is that, on average, travel insurance costs around  5% to 6% of the total cost of your trip. So, if your trip costs around $2,000, you should expect to pay about $100 to $120 for your policy. But this won't be the case across the board. For instance, some will pay up to 12% of their trip cost for their travel insurance policy. With this higher percentage, a travel policy for a $2,000 trip could cost around $240.

How Much Does AXA Travel Insurance Cost?

AXA Travel Protection plans start at $16. Domestic travelers looking to stretch their budget should consider our Silver plan , which includes basic coverage for trip cancellation, baggage, emergency medical, and more.

The Gold and Platinum plans provide greater coverage options and are best suited for international travel and cruises.

Factors Affecting the Cost of Travel Insurance

There is no exact percentage or dollar amount you can expect to pay for your trip insurance without getting a personalized quote. Many shoppers start by getting quotes from several companies so they can estimate the cost or bargain-shop. Price variation is common among companies. Several factors affect the cost of travel insurance, and we'll explore them all below:

The Cost of the Trip

The more expensive your trip is, the more your travel insurance may cost. This is because higher ticket trips often have more nonrefundable costs (lengthier hotel stays, further flights, longer retreats), which equates to potentially higher payouts to you should you file a claim.

Recall that travel insurance for a $2,000 trip may cost around $100 - $120. For a $15,000 trip, that cost estimate rises to $750 to $900. So, expect to pay more if you're taking a high-ticket vacation.

Note: Not every trip expense can be included under your policy — only nonrefundable ones.   Travel insurance only reimburses nonrefundable costs. You won't be able to file a claim for refundable expenses.

The Type of Plan

The plan you choose depends on your risk-tolerance. For instance, basic plans cover common trip mishaps such as trip-cancellations, missed connections, flight delays, etc.

Other more expensive plans will cover everything included in a basic plan but with higher coverage limits and more optional add-ons such as Cancel for Any Reason, rental car insurance and more.

Check out AXA’s Travel Protection plans to determine which plan fits you

Where You're Going

When it comes to international travel, the US Department of State outlines key components that should be included in your travel insurance coverage.  Are you going to a calm, low-risk area like Norway or Denmark? Or are you going to a riskier area? Travel insurance for higher-risk areas usually commands a higher price tag. You're more likely to be involved in an incident or unexpected situation in risky countries. On the other hand, trip policies for lower-risk countries may be more affordable.     As a reminder, it’s important to check policy terms, as some policies may or may not provide coverage to specific countries.

How Long You'll Be Gone

The longer your trip is, the longer the window of opportunity is for things to go awry. A policy for a one- or two-day trip won't cost much in most cases. But insurance for a month-long trip is a different story. Your likelihood of experiencing a trip-related delay, illness, or accident increases the longer you'll be away.

How Old You Are

Your age plays a significant role in your travel insurance price. The older you are, the greater your risk of experiencing a medical issue and needing to file an insurance claim. As a result, those of advanced age should be prepared to pay significantly more for their policy than someone who's much younger.

Number of Travelers

As you might expect, bigger travel groups will need more insurance coverage than a smaller travel group would. So, a solo traveler may pay significantly less for a policy than a family of 6 would.

Add-Ons You Choose

Depending on where you shop for your travel insurance, you may be able to pay for additional benefits to better tailor your policy to your preferences. A couple of these add-ons include:

Cancel for Any Reason Coverage - This is an add-on benefit that allows you to cancel your policy for any reason at all.

Collision Damage Waiver - This waiver covers rental car damage in the event of a collision.

IMPORTANT: The cheapest travel insurance policy isn't going to always be the best fit for you. These policies don't give you as much coverage as some of the more comprehensive policies do. Your level of coverage should coincide with the amount of coverage you need. We'll touch more on this later.

GET YOUR FREE QUOTE

Getting a Quote for Travel Insurance

You have a good general idea of what travel insurance costs. But what if you want to know how much your insurance policy will be for your specific trip? You need a quote. At AXA, you can get a free, no-obligation quote based on your trip details. It outlines the three plans we offer, basic benefit details, and a cut-and-dry price per plan.

To get a quote, go to the AXA homepage and fill out this form:

axa travel insurance ireland quote

After clicking "Get a quote now," you'll instantly see your trip coverage options and how much each of them will cost. Getting an exact quote for your travel insurance is much better than taking a guess.

How to Buy Travel Insurance

Some may think buying travel insurance is a labor-intensive endeavor, but that's not the case if you know what to expect. At AXA, there are two main routes to choose from: the online DIY route and the agent route. The DIY route is traveler-led, where you'll get a quick, no-obligation quote online, read over AXA's policy options , and select and pay for your ideal policy.

On the other hand, if this is your first time buying travel insurance, enlisting the help of an agent may be in order. AXA's agents are standing by to answer any questions you may have about travel insurance in general, walk you through the quote generation process, explain your travel policy options, and assist with the payment step. It's much more hands-on than the online DIY option. Call an AXA travel insurance agent at 855-327-1441 and pick option 2.

Choose the Right Travel Insurance for You

We'd be remiss if we didn't communicate the importance of choosing the right travel insurance for you. You may be able to keep costs low with a basic plan if you're taking a solo domestic trip to Denver for a couple of days. But if you're taking a long, international trip or visiting a high-risk area, it may be worth it to purchase a more expensive plan that gets you more coverage for unexpected scenarios.

Moreover, if you're prone to medical issues or simply want more peace of mind during your trip, select a plan with more substantial benefits.

Regardless, before you choose a plan, read the terms and benefits of a given plan and be sure you understand it fully.

Happy Travels!

Now, you don't have to wonder, "How much is travel insurance?" You have a general idea of how much you'll need to insure your trip, you know how to get a quote, and you understand the factors associated with travel insurance prices. Before you go, we encourage you to explore AXA Travel Insurance. Whether you plan on exploring domestically, country-hopping internationally, or taking a relaxing cruise, there's a plan designed to cover what matters most. AXA's high-value plans can help shield you from unforeseen circumstances so you can focus on enjoying your trip. Learn more from our FAQ page here . Whether you’re traveling the world or crossing state lines, travel insurance such as the policies offered by AXA Travel Insurance can offer a safety net in case you have to cancel or interrupt your trip or need support along the way for medical emergencies, lost bags, or missed connections.

For more than 60 years, AXA Travel Insurance has provided peace of mind and financial stability to travelers. With solid ratings and underwriting by Nationwide Mutual Insurance, travel insurance plans sold by AXA are backed by an A.M. Best Excellent financial strength rating. AXA offers travel insurance with trip interruption and cancellation coverage, medical emergency and evacuation benefits, lost or delayed baggage, and more.

Let’s examine AXA’s travel insurance coverage options, benefits, and service and compare it to alternatives such as credit card travel coverage and other travel insurance providers.

Travel insurance can protect what you’ve invested in an upcoming trip. When the unexpected occurs, such as a trip cancellation or medical need , travel insurance can offer the benefits you need to cover it.

You might choose travel insurance for these reasons:

  • Your trip has deposits or payments that you can’t get refunded if you need to cancel your trip.
  • The health insurance you use at home doesn’t work at your destination.
  • You’re planning activities that aren’t covered by your health insurance.
  • Medical care is subpar at your destination and you may need to be evacuated to another location with adequate medical facilities.
  • You’re concerned about the possibility of lost bags, delays, or missed connections, especially if you have multiple flights or transfers.

Travel insurance isn’t necessary for every trip, such as if you’re traveling domestically where your health insurance works and you don’t have major nonrefundable expenses. But travel insurance is worth it if you’ve got a lot of nonrefundable expenses invested in your trip or you’ll need medical coverage at your destination.

COVID-19 can interrupt your travel plans, whether you get sick and have to cancel a trip, need to quarantine or get medical treatment while traveling, or plan to visit a destination with high COVID-19 numbers. While some travel insurance companies  exclude COVID-19 from insurance coverage , AXA offers COVID-19 coverage as part of its travel protection plans , including trip cancellation and trip interruption and emergency medical and evacuation coverage.

Why Purchase Travel Insurance From AXA?

Any travel insurance company you purchase a policy from should be reputable, reliable, and stable. After all, you’re relying on the company to be there for you when you need it most. It pays to verify reviews and ratings — AXA offers good reassurance in this area.

With 64 years in business, AXA has an A- Better Business Bureau rating . On the travel insurance website Squaremouth , AXA has an overall 4.22/5 rating , with 0.1% negative reviews among more than 69,000 policies sold . AXA’s travel insurance plans are backed by Nationwide Mutual Insurance, which has an A (Excellent) financial strength rating from financial rating company A.M. Best. With 6 decades in business and solid ratings , AXA is a travel insurance company you can trust.

AXA offers travel insurance with medical and emergency evacuation benefits, trip cancellation and interruption, baggage loss, and Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) options. Let’s look at the details of AXA travel insurance policies.

AXA offers 3 levels of travel insurance : Silver, Gold, and Platinum . Each level offers different limits, but all of AXA’s policies have 100% trip cancellation coverage, emergency medical coverage and medical evacuation, baggage delay and loss, and missed connection coverage.

Let’s compare what you get with each policy:

With plans as low as $16 and minimal coverage, AXA recommends the Silver plan for domestic travel. You can cover 100% of your trip cost for trip cancellation and interruption coverage. If your travel is delayed, you can get up to $100 per day for expenses, up to $500 total, and $200 for delayed baggage.

There’s also $500 in missed connection coverage. The $25,000 in emergency medical expense coverage isn’t much, but it might be adequate for domestic travel if you’re using your primary health insurance first.

Gold plans start at $36 but add more coverage and are appropriate for cruises or Schengen travel . Like the Silver plan, the Gold plan offers up to 100% trip cancellation coverage but bumps trip interruption to 150% of your trip cost. Limits for all coverages are higher, with $200 per day and $1,000 maximum in trip delay coverage and $1,000 for missed connections. Baggage delays offer up to $300, and you can get up to $1,500 for lost baggage and personal effects.

The health coverage is also much higher at $100,000, and it adds a $50,000 non-medical emergency evacuation option on top of the $500,000 medical emergency evacuation benefit. This plan also offers an optional $35,000 collision damage waiver.

The Platinum plan , starting at $52, steps up coverage and offers additional options. You’ll get 100% trip cost coverage for trip cancellation and 150% for trip interruption. Trip delay coverage offers up to $300 per day and a $1,250 maximum, plus $600 for baggage delays and $3,000 for lost baggage and personal effects.

Emergency medical treatment is also higher at $250,000, and you’re covered for $1 million in emergency medical evacuation — $100,000 for non-medical evacuation.

The Platinum plan also offers additional coverage for sports, with $25 per day for lost skier days, $500 for lost golf rounds, and $1,000 for sports equipment rental. It also offers optional coverage for up to 75% of trip cost with Cancel for Any Reason coverage and a $50,000 collision damage waiver.

You can get a quote directly from AXA by visiting the AXA Travel Insurance website . The quote form is the first thing you’ll see on the homepage.

To start your quote, you’ll fill out the quote form, including your state of residence, destination country, travel dates, first deposit date, total trip cost, number of travelers (up to 10), and the age of travelers.

Once you fill out the form, you’ll be presented with plan options. For a 60-year-old visiting Japan and spending $2,500, we were offered a Silver ($155), Gold ($183), or Platinum ($218) plan .

How AXA Compares — Summary

AXA is a good option for travel insurance, but it’s not your only option. Let’s see how AXA compares to the coverage you can get from popular travel credit cards and travel insurance competitors .

Many travel credit cards offer travel insurance as a complimentary benefit, whether it’s car rental collision waivers , trip cancellation coverage , or emergency medical and evacuation benefits. This coverage can be helpful if you’re using your card to pay for your travel expenses, but it’s often not as comprehensive as the coverage you can get from a travel insurance policy like what AXA offers .

Let’s compare AXA’s best travel insurance policy against The Platinum Card ®  from American Express  and the  Chase Sapphire Reserve ® , which both offer some of the best travel protections available with credit card benefits.

Unless you’re taking a trip with expenses higher than $10,000, the trip cancellation coverage should be about the same whether you’re using an Amex Platinum card, Chase Sapphire Reserve card, or the AXA Platinum plan. However, the AXA Platinum plan comes out ahead with 150% of your trip cost for trip interruption.

We see a major difference in coverage for emergency medical treatment and evacuation. The Amex Platinum card doesn’t offer emergency medical coverage, but you can arrange an emergency medical evacuation using the Premium Global Assist Hotline. The Chase Sapphire Reserve card offers up to $2,500 in emergency medical coverage and $100,000 for emergency evacuation. Neither of these offerings compares to the $250,000 in emergency medical coverage and $1 million in emergency medical evacuation coverage you can get from AXA Platinum.

Credit card travel insurance coverage is complimentary if you already have the card, but it is lacking in some areas. It’s a good idea to use your card’s travel insurance as a backup for trip cancellation, interruption, travel delays, or lost baggage, but use the AXA Platinum plan for its superior emergency medical and evacuation coverage.

It’s always a good idea to compare travel insurance quotes across multiple providers so you can find the best price and coverage. We used Squaremouth , a travel insurance comparison website, to see how AXA’s policies compare to those of other companies.

As with the initial price quotes we pulled from AXA’s website, our sample trip on Squaremouth had:

  • Traveling to Japan a month from now
  • Trip cost: $2,500
  • Initial trip deposit paid within the last 24 hours
  • State of residence: Texas

We limited results to policies that offer at least as much coverage as the AXA Platinum policy does on major benefits:

  • COVID-19 coverage
  • Minimum $250,000 emergency medical benefit
  • Minimum $1 million emergency medical benefit
  • 100% trip cancellation
  • 150% trip interruption

Each policy offered nearly identical coverage for these major benefits, and Tin Leg ‘s Silver plan had the lowest cost at $164.35, followed closely by $165.84 from HTH Worldwide ‘s TripProtector Classic plan.

AXA Squaremouth alternatives

If you’re mainly concerned with full coverage for trip cancellation and interruption along with $250,000 in emergency medical and $1 million for emergency medical evacuation, you can save if you go with Tin Leg .

However, the higher-priced policies offer additional coverage and options. For example, AXA Platinum offers the option to add Cancel for Any Reason coverage and includes sports equipment rentals and missed ski days or golf rounds. Tin Leg doesn’t have missed connection coverage, but Seven Corners Trip Protection Choice and AXA Platinum offer up to $1,500 for missed connections on cruises or tours.

All of the policies we quoted except for Tin Leg Silver offer employment layoff as a covered cancellation reason, and AXA Platinum allows you to cancel your trip for work reasons, though none of the other policies do. AXA Platinum also offers $100,000 in non-medical evacuation , which Tin Leg Silver and HTH Worldwide TripProtector Classic policies do not, and is much higher than the $20,000 benefit offered by the Seven Corners Trip Protection Choice policy.

AXA Platinum has a higher cost than competitors but offers more robust coverage. If you’re mainly concerned with major coverage for trip cancellation and interruption, emergency medical, and emergency evacuation, other travel insurance companies may offer a better quote. But if you want additional coverage and options such as non-medical evacuation and expanded cancellation reasons, check out the details on what AXA Platinum offers.

AXA Assistance USA is among the best travel insurance companies . It covers the fundamentals of travel insurance, with coverage for trip cancellations, medical expenses, and emergency medical/non-medical evacuation. With three plans, AXA also offers coverage for travelers with various budgets.

It's worth noting that many important add-ons aren't available for AXA's cheapest Silver plan, such as pre-existing condition coverage, rental car add-ons, and Schengen travel insurance. Cancel for any reason coverage is also only available for AXA's most expensive Platinum plan.

Coverage Options Offered by AXA

AXA Assistance USA offers three levels of coverage: Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Each plan comes with different protections and varying coverage limits, with the Silver being the most basic option and Platinum offering the most premium coverage.

Some policies might even include added coverage free of charge, such as a waiver for pre-existing conditions , which is free for Gold and Platinum plans as long as you purchase your plan within 14 days of your trip deposit.

Specialized Coverage Options

The plan you purchase will determine which add-ons are available. For example, those with a Platinum plan can add CFAR (cancel for any reason) coverage , allowing you to receive a full refund if you cancel your trip within 14 days of making the initial deposit.

Or, if you want extra protection for your rental car, depending on your AXA plan, you might be able to add a collision damage waiver (CDW). Policyholders with Gold plans can add $35,000 CDW, and those with Platinum plans can include $50,000 CDW.

If you're traveling within the Schengen Territory, which is made up of 27 European countries, you may eligible for Schengen Travel Insurance, which covers you in all 27 countries. This option is only available for Gold and Platinum travelers and coverage lasts up to 90 days.

AXA Assistance USA Travel Insurance Cost

The premium you pay will depend on various factors, including the age of the travelers, destination, and total trip costs. The average cost of travel insurance is 4% to 8% of your travel costs.

After inputting some personal information, such as your age and state of residence, along with your trip details, like travel dates, destination, and trip costs, you'll get an instant quote for the plans available for your trip. And from there, it's easy to compare each option based on your coverage needs and budget.

Now let's look at a few examples to estimate AXA's coverage costs.

As of 2024, a 23-year-old from Illinois taking a week-long, $3,000 budget trip to Italy would have the following  AXA travel insurance quotes:

  • AXA Silver: $83
  • AXA Gold: $107
  • AXA Platinum: $127

Premiums for AXA plans are between 2.7% and 4.2% of the trip's cost, well below the average cost of travel insurance. It's also relatively cheap compared to many of its competitors

AXA provides the following quotes for a 30-year-old traveler from California heading to Japan for two weeks on a $4,000 trip:

  • AXA Silver: $109
  • AXA Gold: $128
  • AXA Platinum: $153

Once again, premiums forAXA plans are between 3.6% and 3.8%, below the average cost for travel insurance.

A 65-year-old couple looking to escape New York for Mexico for two weeks with a trip cost of $6,000 would have the following AXA quotes:

  • AXA Silver: $392
  • AXA Gold: $462
  • AXA Platinum: $550

Premiums for AXA plans are between 6.5% and 9.2%, which is roughly in line with the average cost for travel insurance. This is to be expected, as travel insurance is often more expensive for older travelers.

How to Purchase and Manage Your AXA Policy

The process of purchasing an AXA policy is simple. After obtaining your quote, you'll need to decide which of AXA's three plans you want to buy. When you pay for your plan, be prepared to provide additional personal information, like your birthday, phone number, and address.

Once you finalize your purchase, you'll have a 10-day free look period, in which you can cancel your policy and get your money back.

How to File a Claim with AXA Travel Insurance

To file a claim with AXA Assistance USA, head to the claims forms online to find the appropriate form. Once you've filled out your form and gathered the required documentation, you can email them to [email protected] or send them by mail to:

AXA Assistance USA

On Behalf of Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company and Affiliated Companies

Tampa, FL 33623

If you need assistance when filing claims, AXA's claims office can be reached at 1-888-957-5015 (within the U.S.) and 1-727-450-8794 (outside the U.S.). Office hours are 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. ET on Thursdays and 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. ET on all other weekdays.

AXA's U.S. branch has few reviews on Trustpilot and the Better Business Bureau — just over 20 between the two sites. Its UK branch has over 1,100 reviews, most of which are overwhelmingly negative. However, the quality of AXA Travel Insurance UK isn't necessarily indicative of its U.S. coverage.

In fact, on SquareMouth, where the majority of AXA U.S.'s reviews, reviews are generally positive. It received an average of 4.22 stars out of five across over 900 reviews. Customers reported that adjusting an AXA policy was easy and the customer service team was responsive. However, reviews on the claims process was more mixed, with spotty communication and long wait times.

AXA Assistance USA vs. AIG Travel Guard

When comparing AXA to Travel Guard , we'll look at the coverage levels from their mid-tier plans, the Silver plan and Travel Guard Preferred plan, respectively.

With Travel Guard Preferred plan, you'll get:

  • Trip cancellation coverage up to $150,000
  • Trip interruption coverage up to $225,000
  • Emergency medical coverage of $50,000
  • Coverage for baggage loss, theft, or damage up to $1,000
  • Travel delay coverage of up to $800

Comparing those Travel Guard coverages with AXA's Silver plan, you'll see that AXA's coverage limits are a bit higher. With AXA's Silver plan you'll get $100,000 in emergency medical coverage, for example. And the baggage loss coverage limit is up to $1,500.

If you're looking for greater coverage limits, AXA makes the most sense in this scenario. But premiums will also vary based on factors like the traveler's age, trip destination, and trip cost. So you'll have to run your own numbers to make a final decision.

AXA Assistance USA vs. Allianz Travel Insurance

Allianz Travel Insurance provides single-trip and multi-trip insurance for travelers who want to go abroad for an extended period of time. And, like with all insurance, the various plans have varying degrees of coverage.

Allianz Travel Insurance's most popular single-trip option is the OneTrip Prime plan, which offers:

  • Trip cancellation coverage up to $100,000
  • Trip interruption coverage up to $150,000
  • Emergency medical coverage for $50,000
  • Coverage for baggage loss, theft or damage up to $1,000
  • Travel delay coverage up to $800

Looking at AXA's mid-tier Silver plan, you'll see that, again, AXA offers more coverage for emergency medical and baggage loss, theft, or damage than Allianz Travel Insurance. That said, if cost is an essential factor for you, you'll have to get quotes using your personal trip information to make an informed decision.

AXA Assistance USA vs. Credit Card Travel Insurance

Already have a great travel credit card, like the Chase Sapphire Reserve or American Express Platinum? Some of the standard coverages, such as rental car insurance, may be included in the card you already have. It's a good idea to research the terms of your credit card's travel protection before purchasing a separate travel insurance policy.

If you're driving to your destination and don't have any non-refundable trip expenses, the coverage from your credit card may be enough. Another time it might work is if you have health insurance covering you while abroad and you're in good health without worrying about possible medical costs.

It's essential to remember that credit card coverage is usually secondary. This means you'll have to file a claim with the other applicable insurance before filing a claim with your credit card company.

Why You Should Trust Us: How We Reviewed AXA Assistance USA

We researched AXA by evaluating its travel insurance plans compared to other plans from the top travel insurance companies. The aspects we looked at included, but were not limited to, different coverage options, claims limits, what is covered, available add-ons, and extra services for policy holders.

What's important when choosing a policy isn't just the price — it's making sure you're getting adequate coverage that meets your needs without breaking the bank. Filing a claim should also be easy and stress-free if you ever have to use your policy.

AXA Assistance USA FAQs

If you're diagnosed with COVID-19 before a trip and need to cancel, AXA may cover your expenses. Additionally, a COVID-19 diagnosis during a trip may be covered under AXA's medical expense, trip interruption, and trip delay benefits. Be sure to review your policy to ensure coverage details.

While you may extend your coverage in certain circumstances, such as extended hospitalization, and update your travel dates prior to your departure, you can't extend AXA travel insurance plans while you're traveling.

AXA's Gold and Platinum plan cover pre-existing medical conditions as long as you purchase your policy within 14 days of your initial trip deposit. AXA's Silver plan does not cover pre-existing conditions and has a 60-day look-back period.

You can download AXA claims forms on its website and email them to [email protected].

AXA isn't the most flexible travel insurance company and isn't great at specializing, but it offers comprehensive general coverage. Its prices aren't significantly more expensive or cheaper than its competitors.

  • Travel insurance doesn’t automatically cover hurricanes , so you must purchase a policy that explicitly mentions hurricane coverage to ensure protection.
  • Though it’s main purpose is to reimburse lost travel expenses due to trip delays, cancellations and interruptions, it also offers some medical coverage.
  • If you buy travel insurance after a storm is named, you won’t be covered for hurricane-related losses. Therefore, it’s important to get travel insurance as early as you can .
  • Based on our research, our top picks for travel insurance that include hurricane coverage come from Travel Insured, Seven Corners, AXA Assistance and Berkshire Hathaway ( skip ahead to see these plans ).
  • We found that hurricane travel insurance costs approximately $15 to $26 per day .
  • Find the right hurricane coverage for your trip by using our online tool to compare travel insurance plans.

Hurricane, tropical cyclone and typhoon are all names for the same weather phenomenon.

Hurricanes can wreak havoc on travel plans. Although it’s helpful to take precautions, you need comprehensive hurricane travel insurance. This type of coverage may help you recoup some of your losses if you have to cancel your trip or leave in the middle of your trip due to a hurricane.

We put together this guide to help you understand the following:

Our top picks for hurricane travel insurance

Travel insured international, axa assistance usa, berkshire hathaway travel protection.

Hurricane season usually occurs when the ocean water is warm enough for a hurricane to form, meaning hurricane season varies for different regions.

Due to differences in elevation and the amount of sunlight received, ocean warming occurs at different rates, affecting hurricane timing.

The table below shows when hurricanes typically occur in each region.

Yes, some travel insurance plans cover hurricanes and tropical storms, but not all do. If you want protection from hurricanes, you must purchase a policy with hurricane coverage listed as one of its benefits .

Additionally, you won’t be covered if you buy a policy after a storm has already been named.

Named storms

Most plans exclude coverage for named storms, which are storms that were named and classified as tropical storms or severe storms before you purchased hurricane coverage.

To be covered for a hurricane or tropical storm, you must buy travel insurance at least 24 hours before the storm is named .

Travel insurance during hurricane season usually covers various expenses, depending on the policy type. This can include compensation for trip interruptions, cancellations, delays, medical treatment, evacuation costs, damaged personal belongings, and rental car damage.

While its main purpose is to reimburse lost travel expenses, it also provides some medical coverage for travelers.

Let’s delve into how various situations could affect your trip and how the different types of coverage mentioned earlier can provide assistance.

The destination is under a hurricane warning

A hurricane warning means that a destination is expected to have sustained winds of at least 74 miles per hour, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Some travel insurance policies reimburse you if your destination is under a hurricane warning issued by the NOAA.

Before you travel, it’s important to review the terms of your policy carefully. Check to see if you’re eligible for coverage if the NOAA issues a hurricane warning shortly before or during your travel.

There is storm damage at the destination

If a tropical cyclone inflicts significant damage on a hotel, vacation rental, or other property, rendering it uninhabitable, hurricane coverage can reimburse you for your losses. If it’s damaged before your vacation, trip cancellation coverage will apply. If it happens during your trip, trip interruption coverage steps in.

Natural disaster causes damage to your home

Sometimes, you need hurricane coverage due to a storm at your home instead of at your destination. For example, if a storm causes severe damage to your home right before you’re scheduled for a romantic getaway, you may not be able to travel as intended. A comprehensive hurricane travel insurance policy reimburses you for this type of loss.

Note that hurricane travel insurance doesn’t pay for any of the damage to your home. It only refunds your prepaid expenses. If a storm hits your home before your trip, cancellation coverage applies. If it hits during your trip, interruption coverage will kick in.

Your airline or cruise line cancels or delays due to weather

Sometimes, an airline or a cruise line must cancel or delay a journey due to poor weather conditions. Coverage for airline and cruise delays varies by policy, but you may be able to use your trip delay, trip cancellation or trip interruption insurance depending on the circumstances.

Mandatory evacuation order during trip

If a government agency issues a mandatory evacuation order, you must leave the area immediately. This is difficult enough when you’re going through a storm at home, but it’s even worse when you’re traveling because you may not be familiar with the region or know how to get help when you need it.

When shopping for hurricane trip insurance, look for a policy with trip interruption coverage that reimburses you for losses associated with mandatory evacuation orders. Having the extra coverage can help you avoid losing thousands of dollars.

Some policies include non-medical evacuation coverage, but you’ll likely need to use your trip interruption benefits to recoup evacuation-related expenses.

Your cruise vacation is affected by a hurricane

Cruises are even more susceptible to hurricanes, as they take place in the water instead of on land. Ship captains have to consider passenger safety and other factors when making decisions regarding cancellations and delays.

If a hurricane affects your cruise vacation, you may be able to use some combination of trip cancellation, trip interruption and trip delay benefits to recoup your prepaid, nonrefundable expenses.

Even the most comprehensive hurricane travel insurance plans don’t cover every scenario.

As previously mentioned, hurricane coverage doesn’t apply to named storms. For example, if the NOAA announces a storm on November 1, you won’t be covered if you wait until November 5 to purchase your policy. You’d have to buy your coverage at least 24 hours beforehand.

Some companies refuse to cover policyholders if they live near their destinations. For instance, if you live in Orlando and plan to visit Miami, your hurricane travel insurance may not cover you if a hurricane hits Miami before or during your trip.

The cost of hurricane travel insurance varies depending on factors like your destination, trip duration and total trip cost.

To give you an idea of the cost, example quotes for travel insurance plans that cover cancellation or interruption due to natural disasters or severe weather events for a trip to Mexico.

We applied the following criteria to each quote:

  • Trip duration: Seven days
  • Average Trip cost: $2,000
  • Destination: Mexico
  • Time of trip: November 2024
  • State of residency: California

In this example, you can see that travel insurance that includes hurricane coverage costs around $15 to $26 per day .

Cost Example of Plans That Provide Hurricane Coverage

Since travel insurance costs depend on multiple factors, the quotes you see may not reflect your actual expense. For accurate pricing, it’s best to obtain a personalized quote .

Consider getting travel insurance with hurricane coverage in these situations.

You are traveling during hurricane season

If you’re traveling during hurricane season, research your destination carefully. Buying hurricane travel insurance is a no-brainer if your destination is known for hurricane activity. For example, if you plan to visit the Bahamas in July, you’ll be traveling right in the middle of the Atlantic hurricane season.

You live in an area prone to natural disasters

Even if the weather at your destination is perfect, that doesn’t mean you don’t need hurricane travel insurance. You should buy a policy if you live in an area prone to hurricanes and other natural disasters.

If your home sustains severe damage before or during your vacation, you’ll be able to use your travel insurance policy to get back some of the money you spent.

You are going on a cruise

Cruises are highly dependent on weather patterns. Sudden changes in temperature or wind speed can cause unexpected delays or cancellations. You should purchase hurricane travel insurance to protect you under these circumstances.

Use these tips to find the best travel insurance for your trip during hurricane season.

Buy travel insurance early to ensure you’re covered.

Many providers require you to purchase coverage at least 24 hours before a storm is named. Otherwise, the hurricane won’t be covered, and you may not be able to recoup any of your expenses.

Check the booking policy.

Some providers only allow full coverage for up to seven days after you book your trip. If you purchase travel insurance while booking, there’s a better chance you’ll be able to recoup your expenses if a hurricane impacts your trip. You can still purchase travel insurance during your trip, but you will likely have limited options. Trip cancellation won’t be included, your coverage may be delayed due to mandatory waiting periods and most hurricane-related coverage won’t apply.

Opt for trip cancellation and interruption coverage.

Trip cancellation and interruption coverage are usually optional, but most hurricane-related benefits are linked to these two types of insurance. If you don’t pay for trip cancellation and interruption coverage, you may not be able to recoup many of your expenses.

Take advantage of 24-hour travel assistance and concierge services through your travel insurance.

If a hurricane interrupts your trip, contact your insurer’s concierge service. Trained agents are available to help you adjust your plans, maximizing the chances that you’ll be reimbursed for your hurricane-related losses.

Consider opting for CFAR insurance for full protection.

Standard trip cancellation insurance only reimburses you if you cancel for a covered reason. For even more protection, consider getting cancel-for-any-reason coverage . This type of coverage reimburses you for a percentage of your prepaid, nonrefundable expenses if you decide to cancel for a non-covered reason.

What is the best travel insurance plan to have for hurricane season?

The best travel insurance plan depends on where you’re going, how much you’re spending and what kind of coverage you need. Ideally, your insurance plan will include trip cancellation, trip interruption and trip delay benefits. It’s also important to make sure your policy includes hurricane-related coverage.

If you’re concerned about the effects of a hurricane on your trip, look for a policy that covers mandatory evacuations, airline delays, itinerary changes and other situations. The more coverage you have, the more money you’re likely to get back if a hurricane impacts your trip in some way.

Does travel insurance cover severe weather?

Yes, but with some exceptions. In the event of a hurricane, your travel insurance policy may reimburse you if you have to cancel because your destination is uninhabitable.

Travel insurance may also protect you in the event of an airline, train, bus or cruise delay caused by inclement weather. Generally, it must be an extended delay — not a delay of an hour or two.

Do credit card travel protections cover hurricanes?

It depends on the terms of the policy. If your credit card comes with comprehensive travel insurance, it may cover hurricane-related losses. Some plans are very limited, however, and don’t include coverage for losses associated with inclement weather. Check the terms of your policy carefully to determine exactly what it covers.

Does travel insurance cover my cruise if there is a hurricane?

Your travel insurance policy should cover your cruise if there’s a hurricane, provided you purchased a plan with hurricane coverage included. Additionally, your plan needs to have trip interruption and trip cancellation coverage, as most hurricane-related benefits are bundled with those types of insurance.

When is hurricane season in Florida?

Florida is situated along the Atlantic coast, so its hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30 each year.

When is hurricane season in the Caribbean?

The Caribbean hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30, just like hurricane season in Florida.

When is hurricane season in Hawaii?

Hawaii is in the Pacific Ocean, so its hurricane season runs from June through November.

Travel insurance for north america.

As the third biggest continent in the world, North America provides outstanding diversity. With its vast size and diverse landscapes, the continent is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, from skiing down the powdery slopes of Whistler in Canada to hiking the rugged terrain of the Grand Canyon in the United States and surfing the world-class waves in Mexico's Cabo San Lucas.

Why Choose AXA Travel Insurance for North America?

AXA is consistently ranked as the most reliable insurance company for a decade. There are several reasons why travelers trust us with their travel insurance plans. North American FAQs

Which north american countries require travel insurance.

As of April 2023, no North American countries require travel insurance to enter. When planning to travel, it is essential to consider the potential expenses of medical care in your destination country. The U.S. Department of State - Bureau of Consular Affairs advises purchasing alternative medical insurance as a precautionary measure. Medical costs can quickly become overwhelming, especially if emergency services or transportation are required. It's worth noting that the quality and price of medical care can vary significantly among countries, with some being more remote than others.  For instance, countries like Bermuda, Greenland, and Jamaica, where medical services are limited and more challenging to access, can lead to higher costs for medical care.  In contrast, Costa Rica, Guadeloupe, and Guatemala offer well-established healthcare systems that provide affordable medical care to locals and visitors. Therefore, it's advisable to research the medical facilities and services available in your destination country and consider purchasing adequate medical insurance coverage before traveling.

What does AXA Travel Insurance cover in North America??

AXA Travel Insurance covers medical expenses, trip cancellation or interruption, lost or stolen luggage, and travel delay or interruption. Additional coverage may be available for activities such as adventure sports, rental car damage, or identity theft protection.

Can I purchase Travel Insurance after booking my trip to America?

Yes, travel insurance can typically be purchased after booking a trip to America. However, it is encouraged that you buy travel insurance as soon as possible after booking to ensure that you are fully covered for any unforeseen circumstances that may arise.

Does Travel Insurance cover COVID-19?

AXA Travel Insurance includes coverage for COVID-19 related expenses, such as medical treatment, quarantine, and trip cancellation or interruption due to the virus. However, it is essential to carefully review the policy's terms and conditions to understand the specific coverage and exclusions related to COVID-19.

Travel Advice Hub

We're here to help you travel safely, how our policies cater for covid-19.

We have enhanced our Single Trip , Backpacker and Annual multi-trip travel insurance policies to include cover for a wider range of claims relating to global pandemics and epidemics.

COVID-19 put our lives on pause for many months, but now that most travel restrictions have been lifted, you can finally get back to travelling. Our travel insurance offering helps provide that extra reassurance for those of you who are travelling whilst COVID-19 is still a global concern.

Our policies provide cover for the following:

  • If you contract an epidemic or pandemic disease or are subject to compulsory quarantine whilst on your trip If you fall ill with an epidemic or pandemic disease (including COVID-19) or are required to quarantine as a result of your exposure to the disease, you will be covered for medical costs incurred as a result if you are outside the Republic of Ireland when falling ill. We will also provide cover for cutting short your trip, repatriation and/or extending your trip if you aren’t well enough or able to travel home as planned.
  • Our policies will also cover the cost for one member of your travel party to stay abroad with you, where medically necessary, until you are fit enough to return home. It is important that you contact our 24-hour medical emergency helpline for advice and assistance if you are admitted to hospital or are unable to travel home as planned.
  • If you need to cancel your trip Cancellation cover will apply if your trip is cancelled because you or your travel companion either have symptoms or are diagnosed with an epidemic or pandemic disease (such as COVID-19), There is also cover if you or your travel companion are required to quarantine (self-isolate) as a result of your individual circumstances.
  • You won’t need to take a test to prove that you have the virus, but you will need to provide a Doctor’s certificate to confirm your symptoms or diagnosis, or evidence that you’ve been instructed to self-isolate via the HSE. If you are unable to travel due to a general quarantine being placed across a region or nation, then this cover does not apply.
  • Cover is provided for specified individual events only.
  • If you need to take care of or be with a loved-one You are also covered for cancellation or cutting short your trip if one of your, or your travel companion’s close relatives (such as a parent, child, sibling or grandparent) falls seriously ill due to an epidemic or pandemic disease (including COVID-19) and you or your travel companion are advised not to travel as a result. Similarly to general cancellation, you will need to provide a Doctor’s certificate to support your claim.
  • If you are denied boarding If you, or someone that you are travelling with, are denied boarding of your pre-booked public transport by order of the carrier, the government or a public authority as a result of you or your travelling companion displaying symptoms of a contagious disease (including an epidemic or pandemic disease, such as COVID-19), we will provide cover for any unused and unrecoverable trip costs.
  • We will require you to provide written confirmation of the denied boarding order from the carrier when you make a claim.

We know the importance of feeling safe and protected during your holiday, perhaps now more than ever. Browse our Travel Insurance policies today to see if they are suitable for you and your individual needs.
