Best Online Travel Agencies

Booking.com is our top choice for making your trip arrangements

Ligaya Malones is an editor, blogger, and freelance writer specializing in food and travel. Ligaya's work has appeared in publications including Lonely Planet and BRIDES.

We independently evaluate all recommended products and services. If you click on links we provide, we may receive compensation. Learn more .

Planning a trip can be easier through an online travel agency than if you handle each aspect of the planning separately. You can book hotels, air travel, rental cars, and more through a single site, and booking everything together sometimes results in discounts. By inputting a destination, a range of dates, and other preferences, you will see a list of options for each aspect of travel.

The best online travel agencies offer options from the largest number of airlines, hotels, car rental agencies, and more. Look for sites that offer discounts for combining reservations for different aspects of your trip. For example, the best sites will have lower rates if you book both plane tickets and a hotel through their services. The best sites also provide reviews from customers who actually have booked through the service. These are our top picks.

Final Verdict

Frequently asked questions, methodology, best overall : booking.com.

 Booking.com

This industry leader offers one of the most comprehensive trip planning platforms on the Internet.

Lots of options to choose from

Interface is easy to use

Numerous filters to customize your search

Tricky to tell whether changes/cancellations can be made with Booking.com or the vendor directly

Booking.com was founded in 1996 and has grown into an industry leader that stands out for being one of the most comprehensive trip planning platforms out there. From one website, you can compare and book accommodations, flights (including one-way and multi-city flights), sightseeing activities, and even airport taxis. The website lists more than 28 million accommodation options, from hotels, hostels, and B&Bs to vacation homes and luxury resorts—you can browse more choices per destination on Booking.com than other online travel agencies. The website also performs well on cost and typically returns lower-than-average prices for flights and hotels.

Booking.com's interface is also easy to use. On the home page, search for a hotel by entering your chosen destination and dates. Then, use the extensive list of filters—such as price range and distance from the city center—to narrow the results down and find the best fit. You can also search for a specific hotel, or seek inspiration by clicking through options grouped by destination or property type or by topic such as the country’s best Michelin-starred hotel restaurants or the top cities for vegan travelers. The flights, car rental, and other tabs are just as intuitive.

Best Budget : Skyscanner

 Skyscanner

You can compare prices across airlines, hotels, and car rentals.

Simple interface

Option to toggle searches between specific dates or by monthly calendars

Search Everywhere button is great for spontaneous planners

Extra clicks are required to make a final purchase

Must read fine print for changes/cancellations—may need to deal directly with the vendor

Ads on the sidebar can be distracting

Find deals on airfare, hotels, and car rentals with an aggregator site like Skyscanner , which uses a metasearch engine to compare prices from all online travel agencies and the airline, hotel, or car rental company in question. Run searches with fixed dates, opt to compare airfare prices month to month, or click “Cheapest Month.” Searches also include options for nearby airports or non-stop flights only. With hotel searches, you can choose to select only from properties with free cancellation, a cleanliness rating of 4.5/5 or higher, or 3- or 4-starred hotels only. Car rental searches include an option to select “return car to different location.”

Once you’ve found the best rate, click on the link to be redirected to the third-party site to make your booking. Feeling spontaneous? The Search Everywhere button on the homepage offers a list of the cheapest flight deals for destinations both locally and across the world—just plug in your departure airport first.

Best Price Predictor : Hopper

The company claims a 95 percent accuracy rate at predicting when flights and hotel rates will be cheapest.

Color-coded system makes it easy to determine cheapest days to buy

App is easy to use

Option to track flights and receive alerts when the best time to buy arises

Some have mentioned the app functions better as a research tool than a booking tool

Unclear whether Hopper will price match if you find a cheaper flight elsewhere

Hopper is a travel app available on iOS and Android that aims to help travelers save on airfare by usng historical data and their own algorithm to predict when flights will be cheapest. Just type in where and when you’d like to fly and Hopper will present you with a color-coded pricing calendar indicating how much tickets are likely to cost. (Green is the least expensive, then yellow, orange, and red for most expensive.) Hopper will also recommend you either buy now or wait, or you can choose to watch a trip and receive notifications on the best time to buy. In addition, the app has expanded to offer hotel and car rental price predictions, too.

Some newer features since the app’s inception in 2009 include an option to freeze a price for a limited time—for an extra fee—as well as exclusive app-only discounts. Hopper is free to download, and you can choose to book directly through the app, though some users mentioned they use Hopper as more of a research tool before booking directly with the airline or hotel. The company claims a 95 percent accuracy rate at predicting flight rates up to a year ahead.

Most Innovative : Kiwi.com

This metasearch engine scours the web to piece together the ideal itinerary using planes, trains, buses, and more.

Creative itineraries get you where you need to go, especially if you’ve got a multi-stop trip

Kiwi Guarantee offers rebooking or cancellation protections

Nomad option appeals to travelers with a lot of flexibility

Creative itineraries mean you may not fly out of the same airport you flew into

Kiwi Guarantee has an additional fee

Charges all-in-one fee for booking flights, trains, buses (though you can always purchase a la carte)

Travelers planning multi-city destinations and seeking a bargain, as well as those looking to take planes, trains, and automobiles to get there, might consider Kiwi . Kiwi is a metasearch engine that scours and pieces together itineraries from various airlines (even if they don’t have a codeshare agreement), considers multiple airports (even if your arrival airport is different from departure), and offers booking options, whether you’re looking at very specific dates or more general ones (up to 60 nights).

Some will find the ability to make multiple bookings for a particular trip more convenient than going at it manually several different times, though note that you must opt into the Kiwi Guarantee program to access rebooking and refund protections should your reservation change or be canceled. Kiwi’s Nomad option allows you to plug in a bunch of destinations you’d like to visit and the length of your intended stay, and the website will churn out the most affordable itineraries for review.

Best for Eco-Conscious : Kind Traveler

A give-and-get business model means booking accommodations with exclusive perks, a donation to environmental organizations, and more.

All participating hotels include a local give-back component

Exclusive savings and perks

Participating hotels are located in some of the most beautiful places in the world

Inventory is much smaller compared to other booking platforms

Some of the amenities mentioned are based on availability only

In 2022, Kind Traveler (an online trave agency focused on hotel bookings) announced an increase in environmentally and socially conscious hotels, charity donations, voluntourism opportunities, and additional perks like waived resort fees or a welcome amenity.

Unlock exclusive hotel rates and perks from participating Kind Traveler hotels with a minimum $10/night minimum donation to a local charity. For example, stay at the Six Senses Laamu in the Maldives and receive up to $33 off the nightly rate and perks such as a food and beverage credit and an Earth Lab or Alchemy Bar workshop when you make a donation to Manta Trust. The organization funds coastal research to protect the island nation’s large yet fragile population of reef mantas.

Select from more than 140 participating hotels from the Hawaiian Islands to Bozeman, Montana, and the Maldives. Charities include wildlife, human rights, arts, education, and environmental preservation organizations.

Best for Social Impact : I Like Local

Choose from a host of travel experiences with the peace of mind that 100 percent of the cost goes directly to local partners.

Social impact mission woven into organization’s business model

Immersive experiences led by local guides

Range of experiences offered

May not be best fit for those seeking upscale, luxury experiences and stays

Can’t sort experiences by a list of countries (though an interactive map is available)

No experiences outside of Africa and Asia

For an online travel agency with a booking platform designed to route dollars spent directly to the communities travelers intend to visit, consider I Like Local . Visit the website to browse a host of travel experiences in countries including Indonesia, Kenya, and Cambodia. Experiences include homestays and farmstays as well as wellness and culturally oriented experiences—from cooking and cycling tours to weaving classes.

To search for an experience, select from drop-down items like travel dates and experience categories, or view a global map and click on a country to view experiences that way.

The platform got its start in 2014 and has grown to 4,000 local hosts across nearly 20 countries. As a social impact organization, 100 percent of each booking fee goes to local hosts. To date, 16,000 travelers have booked with I Like Local.

Best for Design-Forward Homestays : Plum Guide

Browse and book seriously vetted, design-forward vacation homes.

Highly curated inventory of vacation rentals across the world

Design-forward

Thorough vetting process

Does not publish guest reviews

Other platforms have homes available across more destinations

When it comes to booking a vacation home, serviced apartment, or condo, travelers are spoiled for choice. Plum Guide is an online travel agency that specializes in accommodations—though not just any home makes its directory. The company claims that each potential home listed on its site must jump through 150 hoops to be included, from internet speed and mattress and pillow quality to the showers’ water pressure and the home’s proximity to dining, shopping, and attractions.

Search by a featured collection on the website such as “ pet-friendly homes ” or “one-of-a-kind homes in Palm Springs.” Scroll to the bottom of its homepage to view its top destinations, as well as a list of all destinations where Plum Guide homes are available, including Barbados, Mexico, Portugal, Switzerland, the U.S., and Turkey. Note: From the top right-hand corner of the site, use the dropdown menu to select currency of choice.

As long as you know what you value most out of your travel experience—such as affordability, social impact, or luxe accommodations—there’s an online travel agency to help plan your next trip. Be sure to read the fine print, as some agencies are third-party websites and not direct vendors. If you're not sure where to start, Booking.com is your best bet for a smooth user experience and hard-to-beat offers on flights, hotels, and other travel arrangements.

What Is the Biggest Travel Agency?

Our choice for best overall, Booking.com, is known as an industry leader with listings for all major hotels, airlines, car rental companies, and more. It boasts more choices for accommodations per destination than any other site, and we found its interface to be user-friendly.

Are Online Travel Agencies Worth It?

This depends on your needs and priorities. The best online travel agencies certainly can save time by booking everything all at once. However, if you're someone who is good at haggling and enjoys the details of planning a trip, you might be able to find better deals by reaching out to hotels or other destinations and speaking to someone personally.

Is It Cheaper to Book Online Than With a Travel Agent?

Not always. A travel agent you know and trust should have the experience and connections to find deals that can match or surpass what you'll find online. Additionally, if something goes wrong, travel agents provide you with an actual person you can use as an advocate to correct the problem . But if you don't have access to a good travel agent, online sites still provide plenty of ways to streamline planning and save money .

We considered dozens of online travel agencies and narrowed down the options based on user experience, volume and quality of inventory, unique offerings and specials, and customer reviews. We also assessed travel companies’ environmentally and socially conscious policies.

The 15 Best Tour Operators in 2022

These are the companies Travel + Leisure readers trust to provide them with travel expertise and memorable experiences.

agency tourist

Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out the 2023 list of our favorite tour operators .

When it comes to an itinerary, Travel + Leisure readers want more than a string of photo opportunities — and the right tour operator makes all the difference in creating a trip of a lifetime versus one that simply checks off a list of sights. This year, our readers were especially drawn to companies that utilize local expertise and experience to thoughtfully design trips that will entertain as well as inspire.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey , T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated tour operators and safari outfitters based on their staff and guides, itineraries and destinations, activities, accommodations, food, and overall value.

The top picks were noted for their deep knowledge of destinations and guides who "go the extra mile." One reader who has been traveling for more than five decades said a trip with Classic Journeys (No. 2) was the "very best" they had experienced. Others noted attention to pandemic safety details, while one who went to Norway was charmed by a "wonderful surprise dinner in Bergen out on the water that was fantastic."

Tour operators that seamlessly navigated the logistics of a trip also came out on top. Quasar Expeditions (No. 9) was noted "for really planning out every detail" so that "all you have to do is show up and have a great time." Meanwhile, of TCS World Travel (No. 10), a guest said: "You never lift a finger and just spend your time actually exploring the destination." They even added that they "learned so much" along the way.

Among the five companies on this year's list that weren't on last year's were two women-only tour operators that cater to travelers of all ages. AdventureWomen (No. 14) has multiday tours designed by women from Bhutan to Yellowstone National Park, while Explorer Chick (No. 15) has everything from day trips — like glassblowing in Baltimore and cave rappelling in St. Louis — to full itineraries in Machu Picchu and the Galápagos. One reader said her Everest Base Camp trip with AdventureWomen was filled with "like-minded women" who "bonded so well," while another said she felt it was a "safe tour group for women."

No matter which tour they chose, readers were most taken by the people they met along the way, as one said of Trek Travel (No. 13): "By the end of the trip, a group of strangers felt like longtime friends." Find out which other companies round out the list of the best tour operators below.

1. DuVine Cycling + Adventure Co.

A tour with DuVine goes far beyond just riding a bike — it's a way to really see the character of a destination. Case in point: even those who say they're not necessarily cycling fans have been converted. That's part of what helped the tour operator — which runs trips in Europe, the U.S., Latin America, and Africa — skyrocket from No. 14 last year to this year's top spot. Its "top-notch biking equipment" and "challenging but doable itineraries" didn't hurt either. One reader was especially taken by a guide picking figs off of a local tree in Puglia for an extra energy boost during a tough climb, as well as another guide singing to the group after dinner. As another reader put it simply: "They exceed your expectations."

the tour itself was amazing. The national parks do not disappoint. The travel accomodations were very cramped and uncomfortable. I am only 5 foot tall and I was cramped in this 14 passenger van. Food opportunities were limited.
Fantastic experience - efficient use of time, great itinerary. Well-informed and interesting guide who is also just a great person.

Great! Great day trip to Death Valley. It covered all the sights we wanted to see. The tour company was very accommodating and the guide was just perfect. The tour bus was very comfortable. And Death Valley was amazing to see, especially the rare wildflowers and lake!

The Mighty 5 Tour was mighty fine! Aaron, our tour guide, was amazing. Seeing 5 National Parks in 5 days is a daunting feat but he did a great job in showing us the highlights and also asking our group if we had any requests. He honored them and was great at tailoring our tour to our group and our hiking abilities. We would highly recommend this tour and guide!
Rachel was an outstanding driver and tour guide. She cared about her guests and made sure our interests were met. She is a great ambassador for your organization. The parks were great and having her in charge of our schedule was a bonus. I would skip the museum stop and consider some other options for meals when possible but the hotels were great. A bathroom on the bus would be nice to avoid a few stops. Wonderful trip!

The security guard berween the luxor and the excalibur srated "the bus location and pick up tours:, was the place to be. 8. I was in the wrong location, after talking to your customer service, which at first she was hesitating to help me. She finslly was sble to contact me with Patrivia. We were fortunate to have Claire Kredens as our driver guide. She is a gifted leader and could cope with ant situation. Such a tour is useful to learn which cities you might like to re-visit because our time in each is very short. Four and five hour drives every other day is exhausting and maybe the number of places visited could be edited downward. On the whole, I enjoyed the trip altho the age range 15-99 is unwise. 15-80 would be much more realistic.
My son and I had a great hiking adventure on the Sedona tour! The scenery was stunning, the hikes were fun! Tolman was an excellent guide, who was very knowledgeable about the area, he had great hiking tips, and he picked some enjoyable challenging hikes for us! He was also an excellent cook! He prepared us some great meals! His positive outlook on everything helped the group of strangers on the trek quickly bond which led us all to have a great hiking experience!

Although the tour was very expensive- over $2000 for 3 days is over the top- it wss a great experience, saw lots of wildlife and the guide was outstanding
What an amazing experience this was; from the greeting and pick up by our guide/driver, to the phenomenal sights and the historical references that accompanied them! I am so pleased. This was an exceptionally planned tour that successfully met all of my needs. I would not change a thing and look forward to future adventures with them.

Excellent. Great guide, driver, weather, hotels, food. Great itenirary. Love love this trip.
Optional excursions were reasonably priced. Suggest you put together other places in each city as a walking guide or short taxi or uber ride. Example access to close by museums open late and could walk to from hotel. Free time activities and what they are and where located is helpful.tour guide can offer to accompany a group interested to explore more during free leisure tome.Provide more detail info about the logistics of site visits. Niagara falls..suggest more water proof gear clothing and shoe types etc. Terrain to expect when visiting certain sites and possible alternatives.climbing and how difficult-easy or more strenuous or advanced climbing activity. Overall, small groups so much better than filling up bus. Thank you for giving single travelers their own bus space. Would love to watch more travel videos on longer driving distances.

Good time with lots of riding in the van going to interesting places
We had a wonderful time. The tour was well planned and well managed. The CEO was excellent ..good driver, good communicator, had good knowledge of the local attractions and made great recommendations for restaurants. The group we were with was also a very pleasant group which made the experience that much more enjoyable. That said, would have loved to see the accommodations updated.. most except the Denali cabins were old and "weathered".

It was my first group trip and also my first camping trip. I have to say it was one of the best trips I've been on. It was an adventure! We were lucky enough to see the Northern Lights at Remote Camp. Tory and Dave took care of everything and made sure everyone had a great time. No matter what problem you had, they always helped each other! Dave cooked delicious food, we had marshmallows by the fire in the evening and it felt like family. It's a great tour and I can only recommend it to anyone! It certainly wasn't my last tour with Infinite Adventure! Many thanks to Tory, Dave and Natalie (who you could ask any question you wanted to know beforehand) for this unforgettable time! :)
Jump on the bus with Infinite Adventures for a magnificent Alaskan expedition! Dave and Tory are excellent guides and will keep you informed about the areas you visit and give expert advice. I found this to be a truly joyful experience!

Had a wonderful time - a lot of hiking, seeing the sites in Alaska and viewing the Northern Lights.

This trip was run like a school trip, we were told that we had to stick to the schedule rigidly even though I asked several times to visit a different museum/shop. Free time was limited and it seemed like the guide had specific ideas of what he wanted to do and see. Our guide also left us on a subway in New York to get home close to midnight and then we had issues getting checked into the hostel. FYI most tour guides make sure their group gets to the hotel safely and without hassle. Waste of time and money.
From a speedboat to the Statue of Liberty to fireworks on 4th July in Washington to hiking to Yosemite Falls, this trip showcased the very best the USA has to offer. I went on the 21 day Full Cyote trip from New York to San Francisco with my brother. With such a packed itinerary of included activities, it offered great value for money. The guides in every region we visited were excellent. A particular shout out to Ryan, who added in extra stops and experiences based on the group's interests. Other highlights included the Grand Canyon, Washington's museums, whale watching in Boston, cycling across the Golden Gate Bridge and sunset in Griffeths Park. I met a great group of people on the trip, and I wouldn't hesitate to book with the Cyote Trip again.

The itinerary provided by tour radar was not exactly how the tour was set up. One of our stops said we would be doing a cruise on lake Powell. That was not provided with the tour. Also the hotels that they said we would be staying at did not line up.
Overall, the tour was very fun and we'll put together. The tour guides were all friendly, and seemed to work well as a team. Accomodations were not bad, but there were better options directly adjacent. Food options were pretty much all fast food, which makes sense for the tour concept. However, dinner options could have been a bit better. We really would have appreciated a little more hiking and exploring time, and a couple of the guides did the best to accommodate that. However, 20 minute stops are just not enough time to get "out and experience" the areas.

Good trip, covered all the main areas. Guides were very knowledgeable and informative. Accommodation excellent and bus very comfortable.
We have chosen the tour specifically because it was in German and also in other languages shown. Also on our voucher was again confirmed the tour with professional, German-speaking tour guide. Unfortunately, the tour guides did not speak German. We were able to help ourselves a bit with the translation app but we also missed a lot of information. We are very disappointed about this and expect compensation. The tour guides have tried and were very nice also the tour was very nice.

This tour provided a highly comprehensive itinerary that enabled me to see many of the sites that wanted to visit in northern and ceIntral California. Todd, our tour manager, provided detailed manuscripts of daily cultural insights as well as lists of dining options and activities that could be performed during free times in the tour. He was also consistently available to answer questions and provide assistance with timing activities during free periods such that rejoining group activities was seamless. The accommodations were of very high quality and located in established neighborhoods of the cities in which we stayed. As a solo female traveler, I felt very safe to explore the areas around the hotel and find new dining experiences. Jose, our coach driver, had a delightful sense of humor and provided safe, easy transitions during travel days. Overall, the tour was reasonably paced and provided an excellent value for the price. Thank you for a great, organized travel experience. I will definitely be booking with this tour company in the future!
The tour manager didn't interact with most of his guests. Collette is supposed to be a higher-end tour company. None of the rooms were 'desirable', one was horrible. Food was mostly mediocre. Too many of the excursions were laced with politically slanted messages. Don't waste your money with Collette.

  • Plan Your Trip

how-to-choose-a-travel-agency

Introduction

Planning a trip can be both exciting and overwhelming. With so many destinations to choose from, flights to book, and accommodations to arrange, it can be a time-consuming and daunting task. This is where a travel agency can be your saving grace. A travel agency can help simplify the planning process, offer expert advice, and ensure a smooth and hassle-free travel experience.

However, with numerous travel agencies to choose from, it is essential to find one that best aligns with your needs and preferences. This article will guide you through the process of choosing a travel agency, from researching and evaluating options to considering location and reputation.

Before diving into the details of selecting a travel agency, it is important to have a clear understanding of your travel requirements. Consider factors such as your budget, preferred travel dates, destination, and any specific activities or accommodations you desire. This will help you make a more informed decision when evaluating travel agencies.

So, let’s embark on this journey of finding the perfect travel agency to make your dream vacation a reality!

Researching Travel Agencies

When it comes to choosing a travel agency, conducting thorough research is crucial. With the advent of technology, it has become easier to access information and reviews about different travel agencies. Here are a few steps to help you in your research:

  • Start by seeking recommendations from family, friends, and colleagues who have used travel agencies in the past. Their experiences and insights can be invaluable in guiding your decision.
  • Utilize online travel forums and review websites to gather information and read reviews about various travel agencies. Pay attention to both positive and negative reviews, and look for common themes or recurring issues.
  • Visit the websites of multiple travel agencies to get a sense of their expertise and the types of services they offer. Look for a well-designed website that is easy to navigate and provides comprehensive information about their destinations, packages, and contact details.
  • Check if the travel agencies are affiliated with reputable industry organizations, such as the American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA) or International Air Transport Association (IATA). These affiliations can provide assurance of their professionalism and adherence to industry standards.
  • Consider the experience and expertise of the travel agencies. Look for agencies that have been operating for a significant period and have a solid track record in organizing trips to your desired destination. Experienced agencies are likely to have established relationships with airlines, hotels, and local tour operators, enhancing the quality of your travel experience.

By conducting thorough research, you can narrow down your options and create a shortlist of potential travel agencies. This will lay the foundation for evaluating and making your final decision, ensuring you choose an agency that meets your specific travel needs and expectations.

Evaluating Travel Agency Services

Once you have your shortlist of potential travel agencies, the next step is to evaluate the services they offer. Consider the following factors to assess the quality and suitability of their services:

  • Range of Services: Review the types of travel services provided by each agency. Do they specialize in specific destinations or types of trips? Look for agencies that offer a diverse range of services, including flights, accommodations, transportation, and activities.
  • Customization Options: Determine if the agency offers customizable itineraries based on your preferences and needs. A good travel agency should be able to tailor the travel experience to suit your interests and requirements.
  • Expertise and Knowledge: Assess the knowledge and expertise of the travel agents. Do they have first-hand experience of the destinations they promote? Do they provide relevant and up-to-date information about the attractions, local customs, and important travel tips?
  • Customer Support: Consider the level of customer support provided by the agency. Are they responsive to inquiries and concerns? Do they have a dedicated customer service team available during your trip in case of emergencies or last-minute changes?
  • Additional Services: Look for any additional services offered by the agency, such as travel insurance, visa assistance, or 24/7 emergency support. These supplementary services can add value and peace of mind to your travel experience.

It is also worth noting the agency’s communication style and responsiveness. A good travel agency should communicate clearly and promptly, keeping you informed throughout the planning and booking process.

By carefully evaluating the services offered by each travel agency, you can determine which ones align with your travel preferences and priorities. This will ensure that you choose an agency that can cater to your specific needs and provide a seamless travel experience.

Considering Location and Accessibility

The location of a travel agency may not initially seem like a crucial factor, but it can significantly impact your overall experience. Here are some points to consider when evaluating the location and accessibility of a travel agency:

  • Physical Location: Determine whether the travel agency has a physical office that you can visit. Having a physical presence can indicate that the agency is established and trustworthy. It also allows for face-to-face meetings if necessary.
  • Proximity: Consider the proximity of the travel agency’s location to your home or workplace. Choosing an agency that is conveniently located can save you time and effort when dropping off documents, discussing travel details, or picking up travel materials.
  • Accessibility: Assess the accessibility of the travel agency, both in terms of physical accessibility (is it located in a wheelchair-accessible building?) and communication accessibility (do they offer options for communication such as phone, email, or online chat?). A travel agency that is easily accessible will ensure a smoother and more efficient process for you.
  • Local Connections: If you are planning a trip to a specific destination, consider whether the travel agency has local connections or partnerships in that area. Local expertise and connections can provide valuable insights, assistance, and support during your trip.

Furthermore, in today’s digital age, the location of a travel agency is not a primary determining factor. Many agencies operate entirely online, allowing you to access their services from anywhere in the world. Virtual meetings and communication via email or video calls can bridge the gap and provide a convenient and accessible experience.

Ultimately, the choice between a physical location or online agency depends on your personal preferences and convenience. Assess your needs and consider the factors mentioned above when deciding on the importance of location and accessibility in your selection process.

Examining Travel Agency Reputation

The reputation of a travel agency plays a crucial role in determining the quality of their services. You want to choose an agency that has a solid reputation and a track record of providing excellent customer experiences. Here are some steps to help you examine a travel agency’s reputation:

  • Online Reviews: Read online reviews and testimonials from past clients. Look for positive feedback about their services, responsiveness, professionalism, and overall satisfaction. Conversely, take note of any negative reviews that highlight consistent issues or customer complaints.
  • Experience and Longevity: Consider the agency’s experience and how long they have been in operation. A travel agency that has been around for several years is more likely to have established a strong reputation and gained valuable industry knowledge.
  • Industry Awards and Recognition: Check if the travel agency has received any industry awards or recognition. These accolades are a testament to their commitment to excellence and can provide reassurance of their reputation.
  • Referrals and Recommendations: Seek referrals and recommendations from trusted sources such as friends, family, or colleagues who have used the services of the travel agency. Hearing about positive experiences firsthand can give you confidence in their reputation.
  • Social Media Presence: Evaluate the travel agency’s presence on social media platforms. Active engagement, positive interactions, and a substantial following can indicate a reputable and trusted agency that values customer satisfaction.

It’s important to note that no travel agency will have a flawless reputation as there will always be a few negative reviews. However, pay attention to the overall sentiment and patterns in feedback to get a sense of the agency’s reputation.

By examining the reputation of a travel agency, you can gain insights into their reliability, credibility, and the level of customer satisfaction they provide. This will help you make an informed decision and choose a reputable agency that delivers on their promises.

Comparing Prices and Packages

One crucial aspect of choosing a travel agency is comparing the prices and packages they offer. Here are some factors to consider when comparing prices and packages:

  • Price Transparency: Look for a travel agency that provides transparent pricing. Ensure they clearly outline what is included in the package and if there are any hidden costs or additional fees. Read the fine print and ask questions to avoid any surprises later.
  • Package Inclusions: Assess the inclusions of each package. Compare what is offered in terms of flights, accommodations, activities, transportation, meals, and any additional services. Make sure the package aligns with your preferences and budget.
  • Flexibility: Consider the flexibility offered by the travel agency in terms of customizing packages. Can they accommodate specific requests or preferences? The ability to tailor the package to suit your needs can enhance your overall travel experience.
  • Value for Money: It’s not just about the price but what you get for the price. Consider the overall value for money that each agency provides. Compare the quality of accommodations, transportation options, and included activities to ensure you are getting the best deal.
  • Special Promotions or Discounts: Check if the travel agency offers any special promotions, discounts, or loyalty programs. These can significantly reduce the overall cost of your trip.

Remember that the cheapest price may not always be the best option. Consider the overall quality of the services, the reliability of the agency, and the inclusions of the package when comparing prices.

It’s also worth mentioning a potential tradeoff between budget and quality. While it’s important to find affordable options, excessively low prices may indicate compromises in terms of service quality or reliability. Strike a balance between budget and value to ensure the best possible travel experience.

By carefully comparing the prices and packages offered by different travel agencies, you can make an informed decision that aligns with your budget and provides the best value for your money.

Assessing Customer Reviews and Feedback

Customer reviews and feedback provide valuable insights into the experiences of past travelers with a particular travel agency. Assessing these reviews can help you gauge the level of customer satisfaction and make an informed decision. Here’s how to assess customer reviews and feedback effectively:

  • Read Multiple Reviews: Look for a variety of reviews from different sources. Read reviews on travel agency websites, review platforms, social media, and online forums. Consider both positive and negative reviews to get a balanced perspective.
  • Look for Consistent Feedback: Pay attention to common themes or recurring comments in the reviews. Are there consistent positive remarks about prompt customer service, knowledgeable agents, or smooth travel experiences? Conversely, are there consistent complaints about issues such as poor communication or unexpected fees?
  • Consider the Context: Understand that not all negative reviews are the fault of the travel agency. Some issues may be beyond their control, such as weather delays, airline cancellations, or hotel maintenance problems. Evaluate the context and discern if the complaints are specific to the agency’s service or due to external factors.
  • Response to Reviews: Observe how the travel agency responds to both positive and negative reviews. A proactive and professional response to negative feedback shows that they value customer satisfaction and are willing to address any concerns.
  • Referral Programs: If possible, seek direct feedback from friends, family, or acquaintances who have used the services of the travel agency. Personal recommendations can provide valuable insights and help you make a more informed decision.

Keep in mind that everyone’s travel experience is unique, and reviews are subjective. Use customer reviews as a guide rather than the sole determining factor in your decision-making process.

By assessing customer reviews and feedback, you can gain a better understanding of the quality of service provided by the travel agency. Use these insights to make an informed decision and choose an agency that prioritizes customer satisfaction.

Checking for Accreditation and Certifications

Accreditation and certifications are indicators of a travel agency’s professionalism, adherence to industry standards, and commitment to delivering quality services. When evaluating travel agencies, be sure to check for the following:

  • Industry Memberships: Look for travel agencies that are members of reputable industry organizations such as the American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA), International Air Transport Association (IATA), or Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA). Membership in these organizations demonstrates that the agency has met certain standards and undergone vetting processes.
  • Accreditations: Check if the travel agency is accredited by recognized bodies such as the Better Business Bureau (BBB). This accreditation signifies that the agency operates with integrity and meets the standards set forth by the BBB.
  • Government Certifications: In some countries, travel agencies must obtain government certifications or licenses to operate legally. These certifications ensure that the agency follows regulations and provides reliable services. Verify if the travel agency holds the necessary government certifications for your region.
  • Specialized Certifications: Consider if the travel agency holds any specialized certifications relevant to the type of travel you are planning. For example, if you are booking an adventure or eco-tourism trip, look for certifications such as Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA) or Sustainable Travel International (STI).
  • Supplier Partnerships: Assess if the travel agency has established partnerships with reputable suppliers such as airlines, hotels, and tour operators. These partnerships can be a testament to the agency’s reliability and the quality of their connections in the travel industry.

Checking for accreditation and certifications helps ensure that you are dealing with a legitimate and trustworthy travel agency. It provides an added layer of confidence in their expertise and ability to deliver a high-quality travel experience.

Remember, however, that while accreditation and certifications are important, they should not be the sole factor in your decision-making process. Consider them along with other aspects such as customer reviews, services offered, and pricing when choosing the right travel agency for your needs.

Reviewing Terms and Conditions

Before finalizing your decision and booking with a travel agency, it is essential to review their terms and conditions. The terms and conditions outline the contractual agreement between you and the agency. It is crucial to thoroughly understand these terms to avoid any misunderstandings or surprises during your travel experience. Here’s what to look for when reviewing the terms and conditions:

  • Payment and Cancellation Policies: Understand the agency’s policies regarding payment methods, deposit requirements, and cancellation fees. Ensure you are comfortable with the payment schedule and cancellation terms in case unforeseen circumstances arise.
  • Refund and Change Policies: Familiarize yourself with the agency’s policies regarding refunds and changes to your travel plans. Understand if there are any penalties or restrictions associated with modifying your itinerary or seeking a refund.
  • Travel Insurance Requirements: Determine if the agency requires you to purchase travel insurance and what the coverage entails. Even if travel insurance is not mandatory, it is highly recommended to protect yourself against unforeseen events or emergencies.
  • Responsibilities and Liability: Review the agency’s responsibilities and liabilities concerning issues such as flight delays, accommodation changes, or tour cancellations. Understand the extent of their liability and what recourse is available to you in case of problems.
  • Documentation and Visa Requirements: Ensure that the terms and conditions specify the necessary documentation and visa requirements for your trip. Clarify who is responsible for obtaining and verifying these documents, such as passports, visas, or travel permits.
  • Dispute Resolution: Take note of the agency’s dispute resolution process in case any conflicts or issues arise during your travel experience. It is helpful to know the steps to follow and the avenues available for resolving disputes.

Reading and understanding the terms and conditions is crucial to protect yourself and to set realistic expectations. If any aspects of the terms and conditions are unclear, be sure to ask the travel agency for clarification before making your final decision.

By reviewing the terms and conditions, you can ensure that you are comfortable with the agency’s policies and procedures, mitigating the risk of any unpleasant surprises or misunderstandings throughout your travel journey.

Contacting and Communicating with Travel Agencies

Effective communication with a travel agency is crucial for a smooth planning process and a successful trip. Here are some tips for contacting and communicating with travel agencies:

  • Preferred Communication Channels: Determine the communication channels the travel agency prefers, such as phone, email, or online chat. Use the contact method specified by the agency for smooth and timely communication.
  • Clear Communication: When reaching out to the agency, clearly articulate your travel needs, including your preferred destination, travel dates, budget, and any specific requirements. Clear communication will help the travel agent better understand your expectations and provide more accurate recommendations.
  • Response Time: Observe how promptly the travel agency responds to your inquiries. A timely response is an indicator of their professionalism and commitment to customer service. If the agency takes a long time to reply or does not respond at all, it may be a red flag indicating potential communication or customer service issues.
  • Ask Questions: Do not hesitate to ask questions and seek clarification on any concerns or uncertainties. A reliable travel agency will be patient and informative in addressing your queries, ensuring that you are well-informed and confident about booking with them.
  • Flexibility: Assess the agency’s flexibility in accommodating your requests or making changes to your itinerary. A good travel agency will work with you to create a customized travel plan that meets your needs and preferences.
  • Document Everything: Keep a record of your communications with the travel agency, including emails, chat transcripts, and any agreements or promises made. This documentation can be useful for reference and dispute resolution, if necessary.

Remember, communication is a two-way process, and being an active and engaged participant will help you establish a good working relationship with the travel agency. Maintain open and respectful communication throughout the planning process to ensure a seamless experience.

When you have multiple inquiries or need further discussions, consider scheduling a phone call or video meeting with the travel agency. Direct communication can often expedite the process and help address complex travel arrangements more easily.

By effectively contacting and communicating with the travel agency, you can ensure that you receive the necessary information, have your questions answered, and feel confident about the services being provided. Good communication paves the way for a successful and enjoyable travel experience.

Making Your Final Decision

After conducting thorough research, evaluating services, considering various factors, and communicating with different travel agencies, it’s time to make your final decision. Here are some key steps to help you make an informed choice:

  • Summarize Your Findings: Review the information you have gathered about each travel agency, including their services, reputation, customer reviews, pricing, and terms and conditions. Consider creating a summary or comparison chart to have a clear visual representation of each agency’s strengths and weaknesses.
  • Weigh Your Priorities: Reflect on your own travel priorities and preferences. Consider factors such as budget, destination, level of customization, customer support, and flexibility. Determine which travel agency aligns most closely with your needs and priorities.
  • Trust Your Instincts: Gut feelings can often guide us in making decisions. If you felt more comfortable, confident, and satisfied with the responses and interactions from a particular travel agency, trust your instincts and give it more weight in your decision-making process.
  • Consider Value for Money: While budget is important, also consider the value for money you will receive from each travel agency. Evaluate the overall quality of their services, included amenities, level of personalized attention, and customer support to determine which agency offers the best value for your investment.
  • Ask for Recommendations: Seek recommendations from trusted sources who have experience with the travel agencies you are considering. Personal referrals can provide valuable insights and firsthand experiences that can help you make a more informed decision.
  • Take Your Time: Making a final decision is an important step, so don’t rush it. Take the time to consider all factors, review your options, and weigh the pros and cons. Be patient and give yourself the space to make the right choice for your travel needs.

Ultimately, the travel agency that best meets your needs and aligns with your travel preferences should be your final choice. Remember that there is no one-size-fits-all solution, and what works for someone else may not necessarily work for you.

Once you have made your decision, confidently proceed with booking your travel arrangements with the chosen agency. Enjoy the peace of mind that comes with knowing you have selected a travel agency that will help create unforgettable experiences and ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip.

Choosing the right travel agency is an essential step in ensuring a memorable and stress-free travel experience. By following the steps outlined in this guide, you can make an informed decision and select a travel agency that aligns with your needs, preferences, and budget.

Researching travel agencies, evaluating their services, considering location and reputation, comparing prices and packages, assessing customer reviews, checking for accreditation, and reviewing their terms and conditions are all crucial factors in the decision-making process. Additionally, effective communication with the travel agency and considering personal recommendations further contributes to making the right choice.

Remember that travel agencies differ in their expertise, offerings, and approach. There is no one “best” agency for everyone, as the ideal one depends on your specific requirements and travel goals. Consider your priorities, price points, flexibility, and the value for money offered by each agency to find the perfect fit.

Ultimately, a well-chosen travel agency can expertly handle the logistics, provide local knowledge and insider tips, and ensure a seamless travel experience from start to finish. Enjoy the peace of mind that comes with entrusting your travel plans to a reputable and reliable agency.

So, whether you’re planning a relaxing beach vacation, an adventurous trek, or a cultural immersion in a new city, take the time to research, evaluate, and choose a travel agency that will turn your dream trip into a reality.

What does a travel agency do? You will almost definitely have heard of travel agencies if you have ever booked a holiday or have an interest in the tourism industry. But what exactly is a travel agency, and what do they do?

What is a travel agency?

Independent travel agents, online travel agencies , visitor information centres, other types of travel agency, what can a travel agency book, big names in the travel agency industry, travel agency business model, a brief timeline of travel agencies, further reading.

A travel agency is essentially the ‘middle man’ between travel companies and the general public i.e consumers. They book all sorts of travel-related experiences for customers on behalf of larger companies.

The main aim of a travel agency is to make the booking process simpler for the public, who might lack the time or confidence to book trips themselves.

Types of travel agencies

So what does a travel agency do? It mostly depends on what type of travel agency you’re looking at. This can be broken down into the following types…

Jobs in travel and tourism

An independent travel agent is the type you’ll see on Instagram or with their own Facebook pages, their feeds full of snaps from Amsterdam, Bali , or New York City. They tend to partner with a ‘host agency’, who will take a portion of the agents’ commission themselves in exchange for letting them use the company software and access their commission. Travel agents are also able to recruit other people, and in turn get a cut of their commission too. In this way, independent travel agencies tend to be a type of multi-level marketing scheme.

Online travel agencies are much more consumer-focused. They allow individual customers to book their own travel, but as a package or with the added protection from ATOL and ABTA. They act as a broker, allowing you to input your dates, desired destination(s), what board basis you wish to travel and so on. The site then pulls together a package deal, allowing you to book everything in one go with access to booking details so you can make amendments and keep up to date with any changes.

While these don’t offer flights and hotels generally, visitor or tourist information centres are found within cities or tourist destinations. They provide advice, maps, discounts and booking services for tours and excursions such as open top bus tours. These are usually run by local or national governments, or specific tourist boards. They are great for recommendations when travelling somewhere new!

Hotel concierge services work in this same way, often getting commission for booking trips for guests.

I won’t go into too much detail here, but there are other types of travel agencies too. You can learn more in this post about the different types of travel agents .

Overall, what does a travel agency do?

A travel agency does a multitude of things. During non-peak times, they will mostly spend their days researching new or upcoming tourist destinations and what makes them so great, advertising them as somewhere people can book future holidays to.

Travel agencies are also required to keep up to date with safety information for various destinations. They do plenty of research meaning they can tell customers about the best places to go, what they can do while they’re there, what documents they need and so on. This is particularly important now, as travel advice is ever-changing with regards to political conflicts and public health.

But during peak times and in the run-up to these times, travel agents will be busy actually booking trips. Nowadays they mostly do everything via the computer, using the internet to put holiday packages together which include at least the basics – flights and accommodation – for one price. However, they also call travel companies directly in order to get better deals or to see if there are rooms or seats available which might not be showing online for whatever reason. Because of this, travel agencies and agents tend to have great relationships with particular brands.

What does a travel agency do?

Travel agents can book much more than just flights and accommodation. Not all of them can book all of these experiences or features, but it is definitely worth asking if you are using a travel agency to book your next vacation.

  • Flights – short haul, long haul, & various classes
  • Accommodation – hotels, apartments, and villas
  • Airport transfers
  • Executive airport lounges
  • Airport parking
  • Cruises – river and ocean
  • Car rentals
  • Travel insurance
  • Excursions and tours
  • Taxi services
  • Currency exchange
  • Train tickets
  • Theme park & water park tickets e.g Disneyworld and Universal in Orlando, Florida

They will also advise on public transport services and timetables, as well as arranging for medical items to be delivered and any access requests you have.

Most travel agencies are actually online, and many of us use them regularly. There are still some in-store travel agencies, but with the impact of both modernisation and the Covid-19 pandemic the majority are online now. Below are some big names within the industry which you will likely recognise.

Expedia – founded by Microsoft in 2001

Cruise.com – specifically for booking cruises

American Express Travel – allows you to earn & use points when booking

Audley Travel – the largest operator in tailor-made travel

loveholidays – a British company founded in 2012

Lastminute.com – offering cheaper travel when you book last minute

Kiwi.com – specifically for booking air and ground transport

Booking Holdings – these are a travel technology company who own Booking.com, Cheapflights, OpenTable and more

Now we’ve looked at the question of ‘ what is a travel agency’, let’s take a look at the generic business model. Generally, travel agencies work in one of two ways. The first way is by receiving commission from the companies they book experiences with for customers. For example, if you were to use a travel agency to book your next holiday which included flights, a hotel stay and a transfer to and from the airport this is three separate components which will be booked through three different companies. The travel agency will receive commission from each of the three companies. There may be other benefits and incentives offered by the travel companies. Commission rates and these benefits mean that travel agencies are more likely to use some companies more so than others who might offer them less in exchange.

Alternatively, travel agencies will charge a fee for their services. This makes it more expensive for consumers to book trips through travel agents and agencies than it would to book themselves. However, as some people don’t feel confident booking themselves, many are happy to pay this additional cost. Holidays booked through travel agencies often come with the added benefit of being ATOL and ABTA protected.

  • The Internet Travel Network sold the first airline ticket online in 1995
  • Expedia launched in 1996, funded by Microsoft, and are now one of the biggest travel agencies
  • In 2007, as the iPhone was released, more bookings were made online because mobile apps were now in use

Should I Use a Travel Agent? Our Travel Expert Says It Makes All the Difference.

The new age of travel agents know how to find deals, book off-the-beaten path trips, and get you out of any jam. Here are our travel expert’s favorites.

I’ve always thought that planning my own trips was the most cost-effective way, but I’ve been hearing more about travel agents making a comeback and saving their clients a lot of money. What kinds of outdoor trips should I turn to a travel agent for, and are there any who specialize in working with adventurers like me?

Technically, I’m a professional traveler. As a journalist, it’s my job to research and connect with locals to get beneath the surface of a destination. So I have never really used travel agents. What could they plan better than I could?

A lot, it turns out. Over the years, I’ve gotten to know many travel specialists, and I consider them magicians. My big aha moment happened two winters ago on a trip to Iceland . A massive storm shut down internal flights for a day, causing me to miss my return flight to the U.S. Normally, I would have spent frustrating hours on hold with the airline. But because I’d paid $65 to have Ana Gloria Garcia, an air-support specialist at the travel agency EmbarkBeyond, find and book the most affordable and convenient flight option for me, she handled the rebookings while I soaked in the Blue Lagoon.

A woman soaks in Iceland’s Blue Lagoon.

During the pandemic, agents became advocates helping travelers get refunds on canceled flights and trips. As travel has come roaring back, an agent’s superpower is now their access to the best hotel rooms, most in-the-know guides, free amenities, and more, says Cory Hagopian, senior vice president of sales and partnerships for Virtuoso , a global network of travel agencies.

And they’re attracting a young clientele. According to a recent industry survey , 38 percent of millennials and Gen Zers are opting to use travel agents as opposed to booking on their own trips. That number is far greater than Gen Xers and baby boomers, of whom only 12 and 2 percent respectively use agents.

What Do I Gain from Using a Travel Agent?

I recently had a friend tell me she spent close to 40 hours researching a family trip online. She probably could have gleaned the same intel from an hourlong conversation with a travel adviser. Knowledge is priceless, and advisers act as your insiders. They know what you don’t and fill in the blanks for things you might not have considered, says Erika Richter, a spokesperson for the American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA). Their firsthand knowledge, vast network, and on-the-ground connections all combine to provide a unique perspective for crafting the perfect itinerary for you.

Kayak, paddle, raft—a river trip down Costa Rica’s Pacuare is good fun. And Danielle Meyer of Coastline Travel likes to book clients in the riverfront, all-inclusive, 20-suite Pacuare Lodge. “The way to get to the property is by whitewater rafting, so you truly begin with adventure!”

Most travel advisers specialize in certain regions and countries and travel to them frequently, so they have up-to-date intel on not only the best safari camps but the perfect tent to book for the most incredible views and the best local restaurants you won’t find on Tripadvisor. They want their client’s trips to go well to keep them coming back, so it’s in their interest to have sussed out hotels and itineraries before they send you out into the world.

Nicole Forster, 29, considers herself a savvy traveler. She’s been to 20-plus countries and enjoys destination research. But when it came to planning her honeymoon in Africa, she felt overwhelmed, so she reached out to Danielle Meyer at Coastline Travel Advisors , which specializes in bespoke itineraries. “Originally, I wanted to go to South Africa, Victoria Falls, and Madagascar,” Forster recalls. “Danielle convinced me that if we wanted to relax, we should stay in South Africa and save the other countries for separate trips.”

Over five phone conversations and multiple emails, they crafted a 15-night itinerary that included Cape Town, the winelands, the Cape Peninsula, and a safari at the Thornybush Game Reserve. Forster established her budget early in the process, and Meyer sent her a variety of lodge options to choose from.

“I initially wanted to start with the safari, but she pointed out that we’d be jet-lagged and would need to wake at sunrise for game drives,” says Forster. “The safari was our highlight, so it was a perfect way to end the trip.”

A man sitting in an open-air vehicle while on safari in South Africa smiles at the camera while an elephant is just over his shoulder, approaching.

Not only did Meyer book all of the flights, hotels, and transfers, but she created a detailed, day-by-day trip app for the couple that included useful information like check-in times at hotels and how much to tip guides .

Agents also act as advocates. If something goes wrong during your travels, they’re on call 24/7 to handle it. When Forster left the battery and charger for her camera at a hotel, Meyer arranged for an on-the-ground contact to go to a camera store and buy new ones that would be delivered to her hotel the next day.

The cost for the honeymoon planning: $150 per person. “I wouldn’t use a planner for a trip to Hawaii ,” Forster says, “but if I ever took a big trip like this again, I’d 100 percent work with an expert.”

When to Consider Using a Travel Agent

For savvy trip planners, the best time to use a travel agent is for complicated international travel. It can save you hours of planning and peace of mind that if anything goes wrong in your chosen far-flung destination, there’s someone a What’sApp message away to handle it.

Domestically, I’d consider using a travel agent when planning a multi-week national park trip or multi-island trip in Hawaii. They will save you time, guarantee you get the best guides, and help you land reservations at always-booked lodges and hotels.

Dream Trips Delivered

Jessica Cook and her husband both work in the travel industry. Decision fatigued, they handed their honeymoon logistics over to the team at Askari Travel , an agency that specializes in South Africa. Their original plan was also an African safari, but just as they were about to put a deposit down, the Omicron variant of the coronavirus made headlines. Worried about getting stuck abroad, they reached out to Askari’s founder, Muriel Truter, who is from Zimbabwe, and upon her advice, changed their focus to South America.

Knowledge is priceless, and advisers act as your insiders. They know what you don’t and fill in the blanks of things you might not even have considered.

Truter suggested they stick to Colombia rather than country-hop. Cook supplied a budget and a wish list: 12 days, no more than three destinations, a barefoot-luxe feel, and adventures like horseback riding and mountain biking. The rest was a surprise that Askari pretty much nailed, with the exception of one hotel.

“Everything felt so authentic, but this one hotel on Barú island felt really fabricated and was full of American tourists,” recalls Cook. She immediately messaged the Askari team, saying, “Hey, this place really isn’t our vibe,” and within an hour they were on a water taxi headed to Blue Apple, a B Corp hotel—and an Outside pick for tropical adventures —on Tierra Bomba island. “It was honestly the best trip we’ve ever taken,” she says.

Tierra Bomba, a 15-minute boat ride from the Colombian capital of Cartagena, is an affordable Caribbean destination with a relaxed pace and soft white sands.

Are Travel Agents Expensive?

It depends. Cost varies. Some travel agencies won’t charge any fee, as they receive a commission from the bookings, while some high-end agencies will charge pricey annual membership fees for their services. Still others charge nominal “professional” fees starting at $150. Fees often fluctuate based on the length and intricacy of a trip and how far out you do the planning (6 to 12 months is recommended). You may occasionally come across agents who charge a percentage of the total trip price or hourly rates.

Basic travel enquiries are generally free. In 2016, Leah Smith, founder of Tafari Travel , opened an old-school brick-and-mortar location in Denver’s Cherry Creek neighborhood so her services would feel less intimidating to first-time users. “With our retail-office location, we’ve become part of the community, and both clients and non-clients are welcome to pop in and ask whatever questions they may have, no charge,” she says.

Matt Lindsay, founder of the surf-guiding and travel company LuxSurf Travel , builds relationships with resorts and property owners to get discounted rates that he can then pass on to guests.

Matt Lindsey of LuxeSurfTravel can arrange a surf safari on a 165-foot boat, complete with dive masters. surf guides, and a spa. Guests spend a week cruising around atolls in the Maldives seeking out perfect swell and swimming with whale sharks and manta rays.

Dominic Allan, the founder of Real Latin America , specializes in travel to Belize and Nicaragua and caters to independent travelers who are happy to book their own flights and hotels but are seeking his local intel. Allan’s three-tier pricing structure starts at $300 for up to three hours of phone calls, during which he might weigh in on where to eat (or not to), the best room to request in a certain lodge, or whether you really need a guide to hike.

”Totoro Eco-Lodge, in Nicaragua, has always been one of our favorites,” says Dominic Allen of Real Latin America. In addition to its laid-back vibe, it’s spectacuarly placed on Ometepe Island, with views out to the active Conception volcano. Allen recommends volcano hikes, rainforest excursions, tours of a chocolate farm, and sunset paddles in search of caiman.

Value Versus Savings

If you’re just looking for deals and steals, you might not be ready to work with a travel adviser, says Richter of the ASTA. “Anything you invest in with a travel adviser comes back to you in the form of amenities, customer service, peace of mind, better access to unique experiences, and handcrafted itineraries,” she says. “You could save money by cutting your own hair, too, but most people go to someone who knows what they’re doing.”

Agents work with preferred partners who can guarantee perks for clients, such as free upgrades, early check-in or late check-out, and resort credits. Those add-ons often translate into savings, says Justin Huxter, cofounder of the UK-based Cartology Travel . “We had a client go to Maui for a week, and because of our partnership with the resort, breakfast was included,” he says. When breakfast costs $120 for two, that’s a savings of $840.”

Some of the Best Travel Agents in the Adventure World

Some of my go-to resources for finding a person to work with include travel expert Wendy Perrin’s annual Wow List of tried and trusted agents, the Adventure Travel Trade Association’s adviser network , and the ASTA’s advisor directory .

Travel Agency Websites: 15+ Inspiring Examples

Last Updated January 5 2024

agency tourist

Written By Steve Benjamins

The best travel agency websites show potential customers why they need a travel agency to make a trip the best it can possibly be. Chosen website builders should make the user experience easy to navigate and ultimately, easy to get in touch with the agency.

Beautiful, high-end photography is also an absolute must that should give a sneak peek into some of the locations and trips they can create. A good travel agency website should advertise it’s specialties, be it luxury trips, more budget friendly options or corporate travel.

It’s important for those interested in hiring an agency to feel confident that the agency is a good fit for them, and that professionalism is at the forefront. After all, traveling is a financial investment and a travel agency should guarantee that the client investment goes smoothly.

California Is Rebranding

Why the state’s tourism agency ditched its “Dream Big” slogan after more than a decade.

Soumya Karlamangla

By Soumya Karlamangla

A symphony performing in a bandshell at night, with a crowd of people seated to watch.

Perhaps you remember the commercials: images of the glittering blue Pacific, the majestic peaks of Yosemite, storybook vineyards and ancient redwoods stretching toward the sky.

For more than 10 years, tourism advertisements have painted California as a place for dreamers, a place for adventure and testing your limits by surfing, rock-climbing and skiing. The state tourism agency, Visit California, led the campaign, which invited people from around the world to “Dream Big” and travel to the Golden State.

Not anymore.

This spring, Visit California replaced “Dream Big” with a new campaign and a new brand for the state, as the “Ultimate Playground.” The scenes in the ads are much the same as before — with the addition of the Rady Shell, San Diego’s outdoor concert venue that opened in 2021 — but there’s no longer any mention of dreams.

Caroline Beteta, the chief executive of Visit California, told me there were a number of reasons for the switch, including that branding phrases like “Dream Big” tend to lose power over time and that the concept of dreaming had been popping up elsewhere, in corporate advertising.

Another major driver of the “Ultimate Playground” campaign was a more polarized political climate across the United States, which has created antipathy toward California in some parts of the country.

Beteta told me that the agency’s consumer research confirmed that Americans increasingly see the world through a political lens, and that framing California as a place to dream about was striking some viewers as a political statement. “Ultimate Playground” seemed to be a safer and less charged message.

The new campaign is meant to tap into pent-up demand for excitement and travel after pandemic restrictions. Visit California’s research found that 43 percent of consumers said vacations were the only time they could really let go and play.

California’s tourism sector was doing well even before the new campaign. Spending by tourists rose to a record-high $150.4 billion in 2023, Gov. Gavin Newsom said over the weekend — surpassing 2019 and suggesting that the pandemic slump has ended. The surge generated billions of dollars in tax revenue for the state and helped create 64,900 new jobs last year.

The rest of the news

California’s Department of Water Resources reported the first increase in groundwater supplies in four years, recharged by capturing more runoff from a very wet winter, The Associated Press reported.

The California Supreme Court will hear arguments on the legality of a ballot measure that would strip the Legislature and governor of the ability to increase taxes , The Los Angeles Times reports.

Southern California

Police officers in riot gear arrested dozens of protesters and began dismantling a pro-Palestinian encampment at the University of California, San Diego.

More demonstrators were arrested as classes resumed at U.C.L.A., with 43 people charged with conspiracy to attempt burglary.

Central California

A jail in the San Joaquin Valley is updating its routines and system to prevent inmates from harming themselves , CalMatters reports.

Northern California

Pro-Palestinian demonstrators at the University of California, Santa Cruz, have demanded that school leaders cut ties with Hillel International and three other Jewish organizations.

And before you go, some good news

The Los Angeles Times has a list of the best-smelling food spots that serve as guideposts throughout L.A. Here’s an excerpt from the essay by Julissa James:

“L.A. food leads with the nose. Mostly because the best of it is being cooked on the street — oftentimes we don’t even have to walk into a restaurant to be enthralled by it or convinced that it’s what we need in that moment. It meets us where we are. Some cities have their own distinct smells according to season — roses in the spring, hot trash in summer. We have Phillips Bar-B-Que and the birria truck that posts up right around the corner, all year round.”

Thanks for reading. I’ll be back tomorrow. — Soumya

Florida's tourism agency campaigns for 'legal' Mexican visitors

Visit florida, the state's tourism marketing arm, has a $368,000 contract for 'protecting and growing visitor volume from mexico to florida.'.

agency tourist

The state of Florida, hoping to boost tourism from Mexico, is ready to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to increase "legal" travel from south of the border.

Visit Florida, the state's tourism marketing arm, is advertising a $368,000 contract for "protecting and growing visitor volume from Mexico to Florida" and "extending the length of stay and increasing spending by Mexican visitors," according to a request for proposals.

The agency outlines the requirements for the PR strategy, including paying for Mexican journalists and content creators to come to Florida and write tourism-related stories.

The initiative comes around the same time that Gov. Ron DeSantis, an outspoken critic of the federal government's response to the increase of migrants at the Mexican border, has suggested a special session for Florida lawmakers to address immigration enforcement.

"We encourage all visitors to come through the proper legal channels to experience all that Florida has to offer," Visit Florida President and CEO Dana Young said. "And if anyone attempts to come to our state illegally, the governor’s words speak for themselves."

This year, DeSantis signed legislation that increases the penalties for driving without a valid license, an issue for undocumented immigrants who cannot apply for a license in Florida, and prohibits counties and municipalities from accepting identification documents that are provided to people who are unlawfully living in the U.S.

DeSantis also sent the Florida State Guard to Texas to help set up razor wire along the Rio Grande in February, a move that went against the U.S. Supreme Court's decision that gave the Biden administration the authority to manage the border.

“It's sad that you don't have a president willing to just, you know, put his foot down and say, ‘I'm not going to let this happen to my country,’ ” DeSantis has said. “But in the absence of that leadership, in the face of the dereliction of duty, we're going to step up and do our part.”

Mission to Mexico

Last year, 514,000 Mexicans traveled to Florida , according to Visit Florida statistics. The top origin countries with travelers who visited Florida were Canada, with 3.8 million; the United Kingdom, with 1.1 million visitors; and Brazil, with 1 million.

The agency selected for the marketing campaign will be tasked with increasing media exposure in Mexico to "support targeted demographic markets" and to "increase the economic impact and gain by Mexican leisure travelers through marketing initiatives by (Visit Florida) and the tourism industry."

The agency awarded the contract will have an annual budget of $128,000 for public relations and $235,000 for trade, according to the request, and the agency must provide a full-time staff person for each, on top of a managing director for the marketing campaign.

Trade is a marketing strategy that targets distributors, wholesalers and retailers to promote business rather than consumers.

In 2023, Florida saw 135 million tourists , but international travel still has not returned to pre-COVID heights. Out of the 135 million tourists in 2023, only 12.1 million of them were from Canada or overseas markets, according to Visit Florida. Before the pandemic, 13.9 million visitors were international tourists.

Young said 2023 had the largest number of "legal visitors" from Mexico ever recorded. This past March, Florida saw a 61% increase in Mexican tourist visitation compared to the same period in 2019. Young said the numbers do not include undocumented immigrants.

Also, the campaign to promote Florida tourism in Mexico isn't new, Young said. The request for proposals "is the continuation of routine business that (Visit Florida) has been conducting for many years."

Visit Florida has long been in the crosshairs of the state’s legislative budget hawks, especially House Republicans, starting with then-House Speaker Richard Corcoran in 2016.

It leaked out that the state’s tourism marketing arm had secretly cut a deal worth up to $1 million for Miami rap superstar Pitbull to promote Florida tourism. Then-VISIT Florida CEO Will Seccombe resigned shortly afterward, and the House for years has tried to either abolish the agency through legislation or defund it in the budget process.

Florida's 2024-25 budget includes $80 million for VISIT Florida . DeSantis has not yet signed the budget for next year, which is expected to be several billion dollars lighter than the year before.

Border politics

DeSantis, who unsuccessfully ran for president for eight months, has consistently backed legislation to deter undocumented immigrants from living in Florida, including what was dubbed one of the harshest immigration laws in the country.

He has blasted Biden and the federal government, not only for their response to asylum seekers at the Mexican border, but also for a  Department of Homeland Security rule  that allows vetted Haitians, Nicaraguans, Venezuelans and Cubans to enter the country and work for two years.

"We’re doing more in Florida to deal with it than the Congress is," DeSantis said last week in Naples. "It’s just pathetic that that’s going on. So I was really, really disappointed to see that they basically capitulated entirely on the border, and at this point you’re not gonna see anything done on the border for the rest of this year."

"What are we just going to let in another 2 million people and do nothing about it? I think it was a real, real failure," he added.

Last year, when SB 1718 was passed, Mexico's president urged Latino voters not to vote for DeSantis, the day after the governor announced his campaign for the White House. "I hope the Hispanics of Florida wake up and don't give him a single vote," President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said.
