The 15 Best Tour Operators in 2022
These are the companies Travel + Leisure readers trust to provide them with travel expertise and memorable experiences.
Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out the 2023 list of our favorite tour operators .
When it comes to an itinerary, Travel + Leisure readers want more than a string of photo opportunities — and the right tour operator makes all the difference in creating a trip of a lifetime versus one that simply checks off a list of sights. This year, our readers were especially drawn to companies that utilize local expertise and experience to thoughtfully design trips that will entertain as well as inspire.
Every year for our World's Best Awards survey , T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated tour operators and safari outfitters based on their staff and guides, itineraries and destinations, activities, accommodations, food, and overall value.
The top picks were noted for their deep knowledge of destinations and guides who "go the extra mile." One reader who has been traveling for more than five decades said a trip with Classic Journeys (No. 2) was the "very best" they had experienced. Others noted attention to pandemic safety details, while one who went to Norway was charmed by a "wonderful surprise dinner in Bergen out on the water that was fantastic."
Tour operators that seamlessly navigated the logistics of a trip also came out on top. Quasar Expeditions (No. 9) was noted "for really planning out every detail" so that "all you have to do is show up and have a great time." Meanwhile, of TCS World Travel (No. 10), a guest said: "You never lift a finger and just spend your time actually exploring the destination." They even added that they "learned so much" along the way.
Among the five companies on this year's list that weren't on last year's were two women-only tour operators that cater to travelers of all ages. AdventureWomen (No. 14) has multiday tours designed by women from Bhutan to Yellowstone National Park, while Explorer Chick (No. 15) has everything from day trips — like glassblowing in Baltimore and cave rappelling in St. Louis — to full itineraries in Machu Picchu and the Galápagos. One reader said her Everest Base Camp trip with AdventureWomen was filled with "like-minded women" who "bonded so well," while another said she felt it was a "safe tour group for women."
No matter which tour they chose, readers were most taken by the people they met along the way, as one said of Trek Travel (No. 13): "By the end of the trip, a group of strangers felt like longtime friends." Find out which other companies round out the list of the best tour operators below.
1. DuVine Cycling + Adventure Co.
A tour with DuVine goes far beyond just riding a bike — it's a way to really see the character of a destination. Case in point: even those who say they're not necessarily cycling fans have been converted. That's part of what helped the tour operator — which runs trips in Europe, the U.S., Latin America, and Africa — skyrocket from No. 14 last year to this year's top spot. Its "top-notch biking equipment" and "challenging but doable itineraries" didn't hurt either. One reader was especially taken by a guide picking figs off of a local tree in Puglia for an extra energy boost during a tough climb, as well as another guide singing to the group after dinner. As another reader put it simply: "They exceed your expectations."

History of Flight Booking: CRSs, GDS Distribution, Travel Agencies, and Online Reservations

A quick run through the whole history of booking technologies
- Airlines are stuck with a limited number of distribution capabilities as three major players on the market (Amadeus, Sabre, and Travelport) dominate the distribution landscape.
- It’s still hard for small online travel agencies and other travel distribution businesses to enter the market because such giants as Expedia and Booking Holdings own most of the market.
- While customer-facing technologies are advanced, some systems and processes under the distribution umbrella are legacy monsters that date their inception to the 70s.

1978-1992: Airline deregulation and GDS emergence
1978: beginning of the modern gds-centric ecosystem, 1987: major european gdss, galileo and amadeus, are created by airlines, 1990: worldspan forms from earlier american crss, 1992-2000: distribution regulations and growth of gds monopolization, 1993-1997: amadeus absorbs smaller gdss, 1997-2000: gdss become independent, 1994-2006: emergence of the internet and formation of travelport gds, 1994: electronic tickets and the first online booking system, 1996: creation of the first online travel agency - travelocity.
Travelocity web interface in 1996
1996: Microsoft launches Expedia
In 1996, Microsoft launched Expedia as its travel division. Three years later, Expedia went public. Worldspan GDS shared its flight content with Microsoft to boost Expedia, as it offered meta-search and booking capabilities. During the second half of the 2010s, Expedia is becoming the second biggest OTA, along with Priceline that also owned Booking.com. In 2018, Priceline Group became Booking Holdings.
Expedia in 1997
1998: Innovata becomes a powerful rival to OAG
2000: priceline is founded offering discount flights.
The business model of Priceline was based on finding the “expiring” tickets through Worldspan GDS. Airlines struggled to fill the plane to capacity. That’s why carriers were interested in selling the remaining seats almost for nothing. So, customers were able to search for a flight, set their maximum budget, and the system would find the seat that matched this bid. Interestingly, the name of the service, Priceline, probably originated from the line that was covering the “price” section of the flight. It was called a “bid priceline,” and the customer was unable to see the real price of the ticket.

2000: Major American carriers launch Hotwire
2001-2004: orbitz and kayak foundation.
2004: Emergence of Skyscanner, one of the biggest travel meta-search engines
Skyscanner looked minimalistic in 2004
2006: Travelport, a third giant GDS, appears and soon buys Worldspan

Group tours can be a great way to explore the world and meet new people, and if you’re looking to make friends who are your own age, finding an operator that caters to your peers can be helpful. These are the five best group tour companies for seniors.
Trafalgar caters to the over 55-70 crowd and does it well, with over 50,000 5-star reviews to vouch for customer happiness.
In 2021, Trafalgar implemented a three-step COVID-19 travel protocol. These new measures add a dedicated Wellbeing Director to trips of 21 or more, increase distancing and hygiene protocols, and feature well-thought out incident response plans.
All of Trafalgar’s tours can be booked with just a $200 deposit, and can be cancelled within 30 days of booking for a full refund. Trips can also be changed up to 30 days before your trip without penalty.
Tours are offered across all seven continents, and there are themed tours to suit almost any interest—including national park tours, religious tours, and battlefield tours.

All of Road Scholar’s trips focus on learning and value. As a not-for-profit organization, Road Scholar promises that their tours save an average of 20 percent per night to comparable commercial trips.
Senior Cycling
Looking to explore by bike with your fellow seniors? Senior Cycling , whose motto is “fun folks on spokes” specializes in bicycle tours for seniors and active adults, defined by the company as “50 years of age or better.”
These small group tours around the United States and Canada are limited to just 13 participants, and include options for easy, intermediate, and advanced rides. Regular bikes or class one “pedal assist only” eBikes are permitted on the trips.

Trips are easily sorted by activity levels (which range from “leisurely” to “dynamic”) to help you find the one that’s best for you.

What Are the Best Senior Tours? You May Be Surprised
Once you have decided to go on a group tour, you will need to select a specific destination and itinerary. With so many tour operators to choose from, how do you find the best senior tours?
Get Started with Your “Must Have” List
Begin your senior tour selection process by writing down your own “must have” list. We all have personal travel preferences, and you should look for a tour that includes all or nearly all of the items on your list.
I have found that most mature travelers’ “must have” lists include the following factors:
Senior Tours Offer Value for Money
Even millionaires want to spend their money wisely. We love tours that give good value. That doesn’t mean we want to sleep in tiny, unairconditioned rooms or eat tasteless food.
We want our tour experience to be worth the money we’ve paid, and the best senior tour operators know that means they must live up to their promises and fix things when problems arise.
No Single Supplement
Tour operators who understand that some travelers want or need to have a room of their own truly understand the senior and Baby Boomer market.
To many of us, sharing a room with a stranger is not only unappealing, it’s a bit frightening. We love having the option to keep our snores to ourselves without having to pay a hefty single supplement.
Leisurely Pace
Vacations are supposed to be relaxing. Tours that have us on the go from early morning until late at night are exhausting. Of course, there are times when early wake-up calls are necessary, perhaps to catch a flight or tour a bustling fish market, and that’s fine, but we don’t want to be on our feet all day, every day, without rest breaks.
Smaller Groups
Seriously, who wants to travel with a herd? We want to be part of the local scene, not standing in an enormous group looking in from the outside. Small group travel gives us the chance to involve ourselves in each day’s experiences and to make new friends along the way.
Immersion Experiences
The best tours offer ways to connect with local people and their cultures. We want to see the famous sights, of course – who goes to Florence and skips Michelangelo’s David?
But we also want to learn how pasta is made, go backstage at a famous theatre and try our hand at bocce. We want to return home knowing that travel has changed how we see the world.
Flexibility
We love having the option to choose whether to participate in a particular activity or relax in our room on days when we’re not moving from one hotel to another. Everyone needs a break once in a while, even when on vacation.
Narrow Down Your Options
Once you know what you want your senior tour experience to include, you can review tour descriptions by destination and make a list of trips that fit your requirements. Look for key phrases such as “level of difficulty” and “what’s included” so you will know how much walking is required and which meals and side trips are included in the tour price.
You’ll want to research departure cities, airfare and ground transportation costs, baggage allowances and the typical weather at your destination.
Keep in mind that the best senior tour for you is the one you want to go on and can afford.
A Sampling of Senior Tours
To help you start planning your trip, here are some examples of senior tours that are supplement-free on specific departure dates, offer immersion opportunities with the group or on your own and take you to culturally rich destinations.
SWT Tours’ Puglia Power tour takes you to one of southern Italy’s most fascinating regions. You’ll have a room to yourself in a luxurious agriturismo (working farm hotel).
Explore the mysterious Castel del Monte, Frederick II Hohenstaufen’s unique octagonal castle, learn to make Italian-style pizza, taste wine with a local sommelier and visit Matera, the UNESCO World Heritage Site that was the backdrop for The Passion of the Christ , Garibaldi and The Nativity Story .
Voyages Jules Verne’s Sikhs & Exiles tour explores India’s complex religious heritage. You’ll visit the Golden Temple, the holiest place on Earth to Sikhs, and learn about the Sikh tradition of langar, or sacred food service. You’ll also tour Mcleod Ganj, home of Tibet’s government-in-exile and the Dalai Lama, and spend time in Shimla, Amritsar and Delhi.
Hotels on this tour are heritage properties, which means they may not have elevators. This tour departs from London; airfare is included.
Overseas Adventure Travel’s tours can be a great choice for energetic travelers, particularly those who enjoy being outdoors. OAT’s Back Roads of Iberia: Spanish Paradores & Portuguese Pousadas tour takes you to Lisbon, Évora, Carmona, Ronda, Úbeda, Granada and Madrid.
All along the way, you’ll stay in paradores and pousadas , the historic inns of Spain and Portugal.
You’ll see Pena Palace in Sintra, Portugal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, tour a winery and a working windmill and visit Roman ruins. Hands-on experiences include a Portuguese cooking class and an olive oil tasting.
One Traveller, a family-run tour operator based in the UK, specializes in singles vacations for travelers age 50 and older. All of their trips are supplement-free.
One Traveller’s Kraków tour takes you to Poland’s second-largest city for five nights. You’ll take a city tour, explore the amazing Wieliczka Salt Mine and have time on your own to explore.
If you’d like to visit Auschwitz, the Zakopane resort or Kraków’s Jewish quarter, you can sign up for one or more optional excursions, which cost from $50 to $65. Airfare from London is included in your tour price.
For a more do-it-yourself option, consider Solitair, a UK-based tour operator that caters exclusively to solo travelers. This tour company offers trips to resorts around the world. Solitair’s Charming Sardinia tour includes a week’s stay at an Alghero beachside resort, airfare from London’s Stansted Airport, breakfast and dinner daily and airport transfers.
You can spend your days as you like; join an optional tour to the walled city of Sassari or to Neptune’s Cave, rent a bicycle and explore Alghero’s Catalan heritage or relax by the pool.
