Liverpool FC Women set for new home stadium from 2024-25

Liverpool FC is delighted to confirm the next exciting milestone in the ongoing growth of its women’s first team, with an agreement reached for a groundbreaking new home stadium from next season.

LFC Women will play their home games at the St Helens Stadium in Merseyside from the start of 2024-25. The club’s ambition is to also play a number of fixtures at Anfield.

The new home is a huge positive step forward in the progress of the women’s side, with a brand-new, high-performance Premier League-standard pitch being laid, enhanced and exclusive-use player facilities, and an improved matchday experience for supporters.

The stadium will continue to be home and property of St. Helens R.F.C., with its men’s and women’s rugby league teams also benefiting from the pitch upgrade. With the rugby league season running from February through to September, LFC Women will have sole occupancy of the stadium for almost half of the season.

The team will also enjoy having their own bespoke dressing room for the first time, and the red stadium will be revamped for home games to make it look and feel part of the LFC family, including the addition of the club crest and other significant branding.

St Helens Stadium was chosen as part of a wider review of stadium options with the Prenton Park agreement coming to an end this season. The decision was made in consultation with players, staff, fans via the club’s Supporters Board, and fan surveys. LFC Women will play their last home game at Prenton Park against Manchester United this Sunday (May 5).

The new 10-year lease at St Helens demonstrates the club’s long-term commitment to its women’s team and the club’s ongoing desire to provide the players and staff with the best facilities possible, fulfilling the ambitions for LFC Women and supporting its continued growth.

The club was keen to ensure the facilities provided for the women’s team on a matchday are the best possible for the players and also to provide a great experience for its growing supporter base.

This move enables the club to deliver an improved matchday experience, not only around the ground but inside with the covered concourses, so fans can expect to see an enhanced offering – from music, face painting, food and drinks through to kids’ kickabouts and lots more. There will also be an enhanced food and drinks offering for fans, as well as an opportunity to improve the retail provision for match-goers.

The move to St Helens Stadium follows the significant investment in the acquisition and redevelopment of the AXA Melwood Training Centre, making it one of the best women’s training facilities in the Barclays Women’s Super League. There is also continued investment in the squad, backroom and wider infrastructure of the women’s first team and Pro Game Academy.

Susan Black, LFC’s director of communications and Liverpool FC Women executive director, said: “This is another step forward for our women’s first team and we’re so excited to relocate to a new long-term home.

“Our players and incredible supporters were at the forefront of our decision-making process. We are confident St Helens will be a great matchday home and will look and feel part of the Liverpool family.

“We would like to place on record our great thanks to Mark Palios and the wider team at Tranmere Rovers for their great support over six seasons at Prenton Park on a matchday and of course at The Campus.

“As founding members of the Women’s Super League, we want to continue the work we’ve put in place and continue to progress in the league both on and off the pitch.

“Our next chapter for our women’s first team is about building solid foundation stones and today’s matchday venue announcement is another positive step forward on our journey.”

LFC Women manager Matt Beard said: “This is the exciting next chapter on our journey, and I’m absolutely delighted with this investment from the club.

“At the heart of this move are the two most important groups at the club: the players and the fans. The players will have a wonderful new pitch and facilities to enjoy, while the matchday experience for the supporters will be so much improved.

“We’ve built up a loyal following at Prenton Park and we look forward to welcoming them to St Helens along with hopefully opening up the women’s game to many new supporters as well.”

Eamonn McManus, chairman of St. Helens R.F.C., welcomed LFC Women to their home ground, stating: “We are delighted to welcome LFC Women and their supporters to our stadium for their home games starting next season.

“The arrangement will provide St. Helens R.F.C. with a new state-of-the-art pitch, as well as additional income streams for our club.

“Liverpool FC is a world-renowned football club and sporting institution, and LFC Women are a leading participant in the rapidly growing Women’s Super League. It is high-profile recognition that our stadium and its facilities meet the ever-increasing requirements of this prestigious competition.”

David Hutchinson, general manager of St. Helens R.F.C., said: “We are very proud to have secured this partnership with Liverpool FC Women at a time when women’s sport is at a pivotal stage in its growth and development.

“This comes at a time when participation, media exposure and commercial awareness for women’s football and rugby are at an all-time high. Hosting Liverpool FC Women will increase visitors to the stadium and offer up fantastic crossover opportunities for both our sports.

“We are very excited to get things under way and thank everyone involved for their hard work in achieving this.”

All season ticket holders have been informed of the new venue and will be contacted in the coming weeks about renewing for next season. For new enquiries on season tickets for 2024-25, please register your interest here .

LFC Foundation will also be expanding its reach and will look to launch projects specifically for the St Helens area to support girls in sport with more funding for community projects.

Liverpool FC Women to Play at St Helens Stadium in 2024/25

The squad faced a number of pitch-quality concerns at Prenton Park

General view inside the stadium as players of St.Helens and Wigan Warriors walk out prior to the Betfred Super League match between St Helens and Wigan Warriors at Totally Wicked Stadium on March 29, 2024 in St Helens, England.

The club have announced today a new agreement situating the Liverpool FC Women’s matches for 2024/25 at St Helens Stadium in St Helens, Merseyside, with plans for a number of matches to take place at Anfield. The 10-year lease suggests a level of permanence lacking in recent years in terms of the club’s commitment to its women’s side.

St Helens Stadium is home to Rugby League side St Helens R.F.C., and is known for sponsorship reasons in Rugby League as the Totally Wicked Stadium. The stadium capacity is upwards of 18,000.

The ground is further from the city center — about double the travel time on public transportation or for drivers — than Prenton Park, though no detail on supporter transportation for matchdays has been released at present, though interest in a direct coach has already been raised in supporter forums.

The key element of this move is pitch quality: a high-performance Premier League-standard pitch is being laid at St Helens, which will be an upgrade on the pitch at Prenton Park, which occasionally saw matches affected by waterlogged conditions.

Further, the limited Rugby League calendar (men’s and women’s runs February to September) means that LFC Women will be sole occupants for a large portion of the WSL season.

The Reds will have a bespoke dressing room for the first time, an element of the matchday experience that has long been overlooked.

Matt Beard is excited about this step for his side, who recently completed the double over last year’s champions, Chelsea:

“This is the exciting next chapter on our journey, and I’m absolutely delighted with this investment from the club.

St Helens Stadium will also feel more like home. Tranmere play in blue and white, which made LFC Women home games feel a bit like aways; in contrast, St Helens Stadium is red, and LFC-specific branding will be added to make the ground feel more familiar.

Fans will benefit from upgrades in the concourse experience as well — most notably in the coverage and added spaces for vending and enhanced offerings aimed specifically at younger fans.

Susan Black, LFC’s director of communications and Liverpool FC Women executive director, is enthusiastic about the move and what it means for the side:

“This is another step forward for our women’s first team and we’re so excited to relocate to a new long-term home.

For their part, St Helens R.F.C. view this agreement as mutually beneficial:

Jurgen Klopp, Mohamed Salah and a spat that sums up Liverpool’s damaging slump

KLOPP-SALAH

Mohamed Salah emerged from the corridor leading out of the London Stadium deep in conversation with David Moyes.

As the West Ham United manager put a hand on his shoulder and they said their goodbyes, Salah was flanked by a member of Liverpool ’s security staff for the short walk to the team bus.

It took him past a group of reporters eager to get his thoughts on an unseemly touchline spat with his own manager, Jurgen Klopp, as he waited to be introduced off the bench with 11 minutes to go in Saturday’s 2-2 draw .

Moments earlier, Klopp had sought to draw a line under it during his press conference. “We spoke about it in the dressing room, but it’s done for me. That’s it.” Asked whether the Egypt forward saw things that way, Klopp added: “It was my impression, yes.”

So, nothing to see here? All water under the bridge? Salah clearly did not get the memo.

It is standard practice for him to turn down interview requests — he has only stopped post-match to speak to the UK’s written press twice in nearly seven years as a Liverpool player — but this was not the usual smiling response of, “Not today, thank you”.

Not breaking stride, he said: “There’s going to be fire today if I speak.”

The words were uttered matter of factly.

“Fire?” The Athletic inquired.

“Of course,” he replied.

After his manager had sought to douse the flames, Salah poured petrol on them.

There did not need to be “fire”. He could have taken the opportunity to play down the altercation. Even better, he could have apologised publicly for the disrespect he had shown Klopp. He did neither.

After a wretched few weeks which have seen Liverpool’s title challenge disintegrate, it was another sad sight on Klopp’s farewell tour.

For context, Salah was added to the club’s leadership group last summer because he was regarded as such a role model for the youngsters in the squad. And what happened yesterday was not a brief moment of petulance. It spanned over a minute.

The flashpoint started with Salah, annoyed that he had remained on the bench for so long, seeming reluctant to shake Klopp’s hand as he prepared to come on. Words were exchanged before Klopp found fellow substitutes Darwin Nunez and Joe Gomez more willing to embrace him.

As the incident continued, Klopp initially stepped away from it and focused his attention on the field, before walking back towards Salah and getting something else off his chest.

What followed was completely unacceptable as Salah, usually so mild-mannered, vented his spleen towards his manager, throwing his arms up and pointing in Klopp’s direction. It took Nunez, the most unlikely of peacemakers, to step in to calm his team-mate down.

Just to complete a bleak few minutes, Michail Antonio nodded West Ham level before the triple substitution could be made.

At the final whistle, Salah was the first Liverpool player to leave the pitch, briefly aiming some applause towards the away end, before ruffling his hair and disappearing down the tunnel. This was the day when the frustration that has been gradually building inside him erupted.

Salah’s durability has been as remarkable as his goal-scoring feats since arriving at Anfield from Roma in the summer of 2017. He missed just 10 league matches across his first six seasons at Liverpool.

This season, he has missed much more game-time than usual. Damaging a hamstring at the Africa Cup of Nations on January 18 kept him out until the trip to Brentford a month later. Then he immediately broke down again and spent another three weeks on the sidelines and was not available for the Carabao Cup final win on February 25.

Since returning to action in early March, he has scored just five goals in 13 appearances, and two of those were penalties. During that damaging period, Liverpool have been knocked out of the FA Cup and the Europa League , and have now dropped out of the title race.

In three of the past six matches, Salah has been named on the bench. You only have to look at how he has reacted to being substituted in games to appreciate how much not making the starting XI hurts.

But the harsh reality is that he can have no complaints about being overlooked of late.

He has not pressed like he should out of possession, his touch has repeatedly let him down and, in the final third, he has been wasteful. He has looked like a player lacking rhythm and confidence.

visit liverpool fc stadium

Sorting out Salah’s future is one of the most pressing items in prospective new head coach Arne Slot’s in-tray as he prepares to take over from Klopp this summer.

It is a genuine dilemma. We are talking about one of the greatest players in the club’s history; a forward who is fifth on Liverpool’s all-time list of scorers with 210 goals in 346 matches and is still their top scorer this season with 24 goals in all competitions. He became the first Liverpool player to score more than 20 goals in all competitions in seven successive seasons.

It would be premature to describe his slump as proof that he is a declining force but, as he both turns 32 and enters the final year of his deal this off-season, it would be a sizeable gamble to offer another lucrative extension to someone earning over £350,000 ($437,145) per week.

Last August, Liverpool turned down an offer of £100million, potentially rising to £150m with add-ons, for Salah from Saudi Pro League outfit Al Ittihad, largely because they did not have enough time to find a suitable replacement. If a similar offer is forthcoming much earlier in this summer’s window, they would surely be tempted to cash in, given their self-sustaining business model.

Salah's big-money move feels inevitable - but Saudi-Egyptian relations are complicated

Much will depend on Salah himself.

Is he ready to wave goodbye to elite football in Europe and head for Saudi? There is a school of thought that he would rather sit tight for the final year of his contract and then depart as a free agent in 2025, when he could command a huge signing-on fee.

Maybe a proper break in the months ahead and then a new start, seemingly under Slot, will get him firing again.

But Salah needs to reflect on what happened at the London Stadium yesterday, because he let himself down. If he had something to get off his chest, it should have happened behind closed doors.

Klopp has elevated Salah into a global icon at Anfield — his departing manager deserved better than this.

Liverpool pre-season 2024/25: Fixtures and schedule

  • Liverpool face a pre-season without Jurgen Klopp for the first time since 2015/16
  • The Reds are expected to be busy in the summer transfer market
  • Plenty of the club's stars will be in international action over the summer period

By Ewan Ross-Murray | Apr 28, 2024

Liverpool will have a new manager for the 2024/25 season

Liverpool will have their first pre-season without Jurgen Klopp for nine years when they prepare themselves for the 2024/25 campaign.

The 56-year-old's underwhelming final season at Anfield is coming to a close and Liverpool are yet to announce a replacement for the iconic German. However, all signs currently point to Feyenoord's Arne Slot , who will hope to lead the Reds into a new successful era.

With change comes both nerves and excitement and Liverpool supporters will be eager to see how this summer's transfer window and pre-season plans impact the club ahead of next season.

Here is what we know about Liverpool 's pre-season plans so far.

Where are Liverpool going for 2024/25 pre-season?

We will return to the USA this summer for a pre-season tour, facing off against Arsenal and Manchester United 🙌 — Liverpool FC (@LFC) February 23, 2024

Liverpool will travel to the United States this summer under new management, returning to North America for the first time since 2019. The Reds are likely to travel across the country and already have three matches lined up against some familiar opponents.

Speaking about their US tour, the club's commercial director Ben Latty stated: "We are proud to announce our highly anticipated return to the USA providing a great environment for the squad to prepare for the season ahead.

"Pre-season tours always present exceptional opportunities for our supporters, the team and our official partners to engage in memorable experiences within a key focus market for the club."

Liverpool usually begin their pre-season campaign with clashes against lower league English sides such as Tranmere Rovers, although they travelled to Germany instead last season. However, it remains to be seen if the Reds will play some friendlies on home soil before jetting off to the United States.

Liverpool pre-season 2023/24 confirmed schedule

Liverpool are likely to announce more dates of friendly fixtures as the end of the season draws to a close, but as things stand they are kicking off their pre-season journey with a match against Real Betis in Pittsburgh on 27 July.

The Reds then face two of their fiercest Premier League foes, starting with a clash against Arsenal on 1 August and followed by a battle with rivals Manchester United three days later. All kick-off times are in the early hours of the morning in the United Kingdom.

How to watch Liverpool's 2024/25 pre-season

While the club have not officially announced how supporters can access pre-season clashes just yet, Liverpool's friendlies are normally shown on LFCTV .

Viewers will need a valid subscription and are often able to find one-month free trials during pre-season. However, this is subject to change.
