Good news, you can—U.S. Virgin Islands passport requirements state that as long as you don’t touch down on foreign soil before arriving, you do not need a passport. Since the U.S. Virgin Islands are collectively a U.S. Commonwealth and therefore considered domestic travel for U.S. citizens, it’s easy to take a tropical getaway without having to obtain a new passport.

While U.S. citizens do not need a passport when entering the U.S. Virgin Islands, they may be required to show proof of citizenship when departing the U.S. Virgin Islands, such as a raised-seal birth certificate in combination with a valid government-issued ID card. So, while a passport isn’t required for travel to the U.S. Virgin Islands, you may want to bring one along anyway—that way, you only need to carry one document versus two.

Also, keep in mind that you will be required to have a valid U.S. passport if you choose to visit any of the neighboring British Virgin Islands.

If you decide you want to visit the U.S. Virgin Islands with a passport, make sure that your passport is up-to-date. If its expired, or if you are a first-time passport applicant, make sure to apply as soon as travel is confirmed. Planning a trip to St. Thomas? Learn if U.S. citizens need a passport, COVID-19 entry requirements, and tips for a hassle-free Virgin Islands visit.

St. Thomas is the jewel of the Virgin Islands known for its snorkeling, swimming, and sailing. The unforgettable Caribbean views, diverse history, and cultural influence can be felt anywhere you go on the island. With that said, travel requirements are important to understand so that nothing gets in the way of your dream vacation.

You don’t need a passport to go to St. Thomas if you are a U.S. citizen because it is a U.S. territory. All U.S. citizens must provide a valid ID to prove their citizenship to enter St. Thomas without a passport. COVID restrictions apply and you must provide proof of vaccination or a negative test to enter St. Thomas.

Non-U.S. citizens must provide a passport, ID, and negative COVID test or vaccine card when traveling to the Virgin Islands. Proof of vaccination doesn’t apply to children between the ages of 2 and 17. Follow along as we explore all of the important details that you need to know to get into St. Thomas.

Is St. Thomas Open for Travel?

St. Thomas is open for travel after it was briefly shut down in 2020. Restrictions have become  much less strict since 2020  when there was a travel ban for vacations visiting St. Thomas. Travel institutions such as hotels and charter vessels were required to impose a 30-day ban in August of 2020.

They placed similar restrictions on nightclubs, bars, and restaurants. However, St. Thomas and the rest of the Virgin Islands are now reopened and  accept travelers that provide proper documentation . You will be denied entry to St. Thomas if you are not vaccinated and your COVID test comes back positive.

COVID restrictions may eventually lighten up as they already have, but compliance is currently required. St. Thomas island discourages you from traveling if you have been exposed to COVID even if your test comes back negative if you experience symptoms.

Do You Need a Passport to go to St. Thomas?

You do not need a passport to go to St. Thomas  as long as you are a United States citizen. It is part of the Virgin Islands which is a U.S. territory. It is legal for an American citizen to travel to a U.S. territory as long as they provide a  valid form of identification .

Traveling to a U.S. territory is considered the same as traveling between states as a citizen. The Virgin Islands also include St. John and St. Croix and you don’t need a passport to reach those destinations either.

The only exception is that you must provide a passport if you are  coming from a foreign country as a U.S. citizen . Even citizens must provide a passport if they depart the U.S., visit a foreign country, and go to St. Thomas from there. The best way to avoid this is to fly directly to St. Thomas without any detours to a foreign country.

Documentation Requirements

Bring your government-issued ID or driver's license when you travel to St. Thomas a U.S. citizen . They will also accept a state-issued ID as long as it is valid and current. In some cases, they may request a copy of your birth certificate if there is a problem with one of your forms of identification.

However, that is rare and likely indicates that there is another problem that would prevent lawful entry. It is a good idea to  bring a copy of your child’s birth certificate  if you bring them to St. Thomas. Children don’t need to present an ID, but a copy of their birth certificate can make entry easier in some cases if there is a problem.

Failure to present proper identification that you are a U.S. citizen can prevent you from leaving St. Thomas. You will need a passport if you aren’t a U.S. citizen or if you are a U.S. citizen traveling from a foreign country.

St. Thomas Entry Requirements COVID

The COVID outbreak limited travel to St. Thomas and the rest of the Virgin Islands initially. Restrictions have slowly become more relaxed now that so much of the world’s population is vaccinated. With that said, St. Thomas still imposes  strict entry requirements regarding COVID .

You must  provide proof that you are fully vaccinated  to gain entry to St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix. St. Thomas allows you to enter if you aren’t vaccinated as long as you present a negative COVID test. Contact the USVI Travel Screening Board in advance to let them know that you aren’t vaccinated.

Non-vaccinated travelers must prove that their negative COVID test is only 24 hours old. The vaccine requirements only apply to  adults 18 years old and up  and don’t include children. St. Thomas discourages travel for people that are experienced COVID symptoms and they encourage you to wear a mask during travel.

Non-U.S. Citizens Travelling to St. Thomas

Non-U.S. citizens must provide both a travel visa and passport to enter St. Thomas. Don’t wait until the last minute to obtain a passport and visa before you visit St. Thomas.  It can take as long as 3-5 weeks to receive a passport or visa  depending on the volume of applicants and time of year.

Keep track of your passport and visa if you are a non-U.S. citizen traveling to St. Thomas. You will need to show your passport and visa once again as you leave St. Thomas. Otherwise, you will need to replace the passport before you can legally return to the country you reside in.

Contact your origin country’s embassy if you lose your passport while you are in St. Thomas. They can likely expedite the process to replace your passport in the event of an emergency. A visa may not be required if you are from a country that is part of the  Visa Waiver Program , such as Belgium.

Do You Need to be Vaccinated to go to St. Thomas?

You don’t need to be vaccinated to go to St. Thomas, but it is encouraged. St. Thomas requires a negative COVID test  no later than 24 hours ago  if you aren’t vaccinated, however. Children aren’t required to provide proof of a vaccine to enter St. Thomas either.

However, the CDC still recommends that you are fully vaccinated if you travel between countries and territories. While not required, the WHO recommends that you are vaccinated for  typhoid, rabies, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and measles  when you visit St. Thomas.

Influenza, meningitis, polio, pneumonia, and mumps are all risks on St. Thomas island. St. Thomas won’t deny travelers entry for failure to present vaccination against such ailments, however.

Do You Need a Real ID to go to St. Thomas?

You don’t currently need a Real ID to go to St. Thomas, but you will soon. Vacationers will need to  provide a Real ID to enter St. Thomas starting in 2023 . This rule doesn’t just apply to St. Thomas, and it will be required for the U.S. and any of its territories.

A Real ID features a  star at the top  to show the TSA and necessary personnel that you are compliant. State-issued IDs are different and feature a flag instead of a star which is an important distinction. Make sure that you have an official Real ID before you travel to St. Thomas after 2023 so that you aren’t denied entry.

What Islands Can I go to Without a Passport?

You can visit any island that is within the U.S. or is a U.S. territory without a passport if you are a citizen. The Virgin Islands is the most noticeable example and consists of three islands that are all U.S. territories. St. John, St. Thomas, and St. Croix are the islands that make up the Virgin Islands.

Puerto Rico is another U.S. territory and it features 143 islands ,  atolls, and keys . However, the most popular Puerto Rican islands are Desecheo Island, Isla De Mona, and Caya Icacos. There are several islands that you can go to without a passport as a U.S. citizen, such as:

• Anna Maria Island, Florida
• Marco Island, Florida
• Thomas, Virgin Islands
• John, Virgin Islands
• Croix, Virgin Islands
• Isla De Culebra, Puerto Rico
• Isabela, Puerto Rico

There are enough islands within the U.S. and its territories that you don’t have to travel too far. You don’t need a passport to travel to any island that is a U.S. territory if you provide proof of citizenship.

Is Travel to St. John Considered International?

Travel to St. John is not considered international if you are coming from the United States. It is a common misconception that the Virgin Islands is not a U.S. territory.  St. John and the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Tourism  have recently gone to great lengths to clarify this to encourage travel.

Logistically, it is no different to travel to St. John than it is to visit any other U.S. territory or state. Despite not being part of the mainland United States, St. John is considered domestic travel. Travel is treated the same way when you visit Guam or Puerto Rico because they are both U.S. territories as well.

Do You Need a Passport to Go to the U.S. Virgin Islands?

The USVI (U.S. Virgin Islands) are a U.S. territory, so U.S. citizens do not need a passport to visit, and this applies to every island in the territory ( St. Thomas , St. John, and St. Croix.)

Traveling to a U.S. territory from your home in the United States is exactly the same as driving from Portland to Seattle, or flying from New York City to Boston. As it's a U.S. territory, it's the United States, so you don't need a passport to enter. It's worth noting that while you're within the U.S. Virgin Islands, you're still within the United States' legal jurisdiction.

What Identification Is Needed in Order to Visit?

While you don't need a passport, you do require a form of identification, and you may wish to have a birth certificate to prove citizenship, as well. The U.S. Customs and Border Patrol says the following about documentation needed for travel to and from the U.S. Virgin Islands:

"Although U.S. citizens are not required to present a passport upon departure from the U.S. territories, travelers are encouraged to travel with a passport or other proof of citizenship, as they will be asked questions about citizenship and any goods they will be bringing to the U.S. mainland upon their departure from U.S. territories."

You don't need to apply for a passport in order to visit the U.S. Virgin Islands, but it's probably easiest to take yours if you do have one. If not, take your driving license (and/or your birth certificate if you wish), and you'll be all good to go. 

Are There Any Exceptions?

Be careful with flight routings. If you're not going to be traveling with a passport, make sure that you buy a direct flight to the U.S. Virgin Islands or one that only passes through the U.S. or U.S. territories on a layover. If you were to buy a flight with a stopover in say, Costa Rica , you'll need to have your passport, as this would count as traveling internationally. In this case, you wouldn't be allowed to board the plane if you couldn't show your passport. 

Likewise, on your way home, if you were to book a flight that would stop over in Bermuda or Mexico (or any other international country), you would need to have a passport in order to board that flight. 

Who Needs a Passport to Visit the U.S. Virgin Islands? 

If you're from outside of the U.S., you'll want to make sure you've applied for a U.S. visa or ESTA before you book your flights. Keep in mind that you may have to also show an onward ticket (not a return ticket) to prove that you won't be staying in the country for longer than you are permitted.

The easiest way to find out if your license is a REAL ID complaint is to check and see if it has a gold star in the top right corner. If it has one, you’re all set. If not, you’ll need to go to your secretary of state’s office and update your ID.

If you don’t have a REAL ID driver’s license you can use another type of TSA-approved photo identification or your passport as identification.

Adult passengers 18 and over must show valid identification at the airport checkpoint in order to travel. The following forms of identification are approved by the TSA:

• Driver’s licenses or other state photo identity cards issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles (or equivalent) Beginning Oct. 1, 2021, if you plan to use your state-issued ID or license to fly within the U.S., make sure it is REAL ID compliant . The islands of the Lesser Antilles include the Virgin Islands, Anguilla, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, Montserrat, Guadeloupe, Dominica, Martinique, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Barbados, and Grenada.

The other islands of the West Indies include the Greater Antilles and the Lucayan Archipelago.

The Greater Antilles includes the four large islands of Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola, and Puerto Rico.  Hispaniola is divided politically into the Republic of Haiti (west) and the Dominican Republic (east).

The islands of the Lucayan Archipelago include The Bahamas and Turks and Caicos.

There is a risk of hepatitis A in this destination. It is a disease of the liver. Anyone who is not protected against measles is at risk of being infected with it when travelling internationally.

Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are fully protected against measles.

  Hepatitis B is a risk in every destination. It is a viral liver disease that is easily transmitted from one person to another through exposure to blood and body fluids containing the hepatitis B virus.  Travellers who may be exposed to blood or other bodily fluids (e.g., through sexual contact, medical treatment, sharing needles, tattooing, acupuncture or occupational exposure) are at higher risk of getting hepatitis B.

Hepatitis B vaccination is recommended for all travellers. Prevent hepatitis B infection by practicing safe sex, only using new and sterile drug equipment, and only getting tattoos and piercings in settings that follow public health regulations and standards.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious viral disease. It can spread from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

It is recommended that all eligible travellers complete a COVID-19 vaccine series along with any additional recommended doses in Canada before travelling. Evidence shows that vaccines are very effective at preventing severe illness, hospitalization and death from COVID-19. While vaccination provides better protection against serious illness, you may still be at risk of infection from the virus that causes COVID-19. Anyone who has not completed a vaccine series is at increased risk of being infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 and is at greater risk for severe disease when travelling internationally.

Before travelling, verify your destination’s COVID-19 vaccination entry/exit requirements. Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are adequately protected against COVID-19.

 The best way to protect yourself from seasonal influenza (flu) is to get vaccinated every year. Get the flu shot at least 2 weeks before travelling.  

 The flu occurs worldwide. 

•  In the Northern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs from November to   April.
•  In the Southern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs between April and   October.
•  In the tropics, there is flu activity year round. 

The flu vaccine available in one hemisphere may only offer partial protection against the flu in the other hemisphere.

The flu virus spreads from person to person when they cough or sneeze or by touching objects and surfaces that have been contaminated with the virus. Clean your hands often and wear a mask if you have a fever or respiratory symptoms.

In this destination, rabies  may be present in some wildlife species, including bats. Rabies is a deadly disease that spreads to humans primarily through bites or scratches from an infected animal. 

If you are bitten or scratched by an animal while travelling, immediately wash the wound with soap and clean water and see a health care professional. 

Before travel, discuss rabies vaccination with a health care professional. It may be recommended for travellers who will be working directly with wildlife. 

Safe food and water precautions

Many illnesses can be caused by eating food or drinking beverages contaminated by bacteria, parasites, toxins, or viruses, or by swimming or bathing in contaminated water.

• Avoid getting water into your eyes, mouth or nose when swimming or participating in activities in freshwater (streams, canals, lakes), particularly after flooding or heavy rain. Water may look clean but could still be polluted or contaminated.
• Avoid inhaling or swallowing water while bathing, showering, or swimming in pools or hot tubs. 

Typhoid   is a bacterial infection spread by contaminated food or water. Risk is higher among children, travellers going to rural areas, travellers visiting friends and relatives or those travelling for a long period of time.

Travellers visiting regions with a risk of typhoid, especially those exposed to places with poor sanitation, should speak to a health care professional about vaccination.  

Insect bite prevention

Many diseases are spread by the bites of infected insects such as mosquitoes, ticks, fleas or flies. When travelling to areas where infected insects may be present:

• Use insect repellent (bug spray) on exposed skin
• Cover up with light-coloured, loose clothes made of tightly woven materials such as nylon or polyester
• Minimize exposure to insects
• Use mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors or in buildings that are not fully enclosed

Find out what types of insects are present where you’re travelling, when they’re most active, and the symptoms of the diseases they spread.

There is a risk of chikungunya in this country.  The risk may vary between regions of a country.  Chikungunya is a virus spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. Chikungunya can cause a viral disease that typically causes fever and pain in the joints. In some cases, the joint pain can be severe and last for months or years.

Protect yourself from mosquito bites at all times. There is no vaccine available for chikungunya.

• In this country, risk of  dengue  is sporadic. It is a viral disease spread to humans by mosquito bites.
• Dengue can cause flu-like symptoms. In some cases, it can lead to severe dengue, which can be fatal.
• The level of risk of dengue changes seasonally, and varies from year to year. The level of risk also varies between regions in a country and can depend on the elevation in the region.
• Mosquitoes carrying dengue typically bite during the daytime, particularly around sunrise and sunset.
• Protect yourself from mosquito bites . There is no vaccine or medication that protects against dengue fever.

Zika virus is a risk in this country. 

Zika virus is primarily spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. It can also be sexually transmitted. Zika virus can cause serious birth defects.

During your trip:

• Prevent mosquito bites at all times.
• Use condoms correctly or avoid sexual contact, particularly if you are pregnant.

If you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, you should discuss the potential risks of travelling to this destination with your health care provider. You may choose to avoid or postpone travel.

Animal precautions

Some infections, such as rabies and influenza, can be shared between humans and animals. Certain types of activities may increase your chance of contact with animals, such as travelling in rural or forested areas, camping, hiking, and visiting wet markets (places where live animals are slaughtered and sold) or caves.

Travellers are cautioned to avoid contact with animals, including dogs, livestock (pigs, cows), monkeys, snakes, rodents, birds, and bats, and to avoid eating undercooked wild game.

Closely supervise children, as they are more likely to come in contact with animals.

Person-to-person infections

Stay home if you’re sick and practise proper cough and sneeze etiquette , which includes coughing or sneezing into a tissue or the bend of your arm, not your hand. Reduce your risk of colds, the flu and other illnesses by:

•   washing your hands often
• avoiding or limiting the amount of time spent in closed spaces, crowded places, or at large-scale events (concerts, sporting events, rallies)
• avoiding close physical contact with people who may be showing symptoms of illness 

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) , HIV , and mpox are spread through blood and bodily fluids; use condoms, practise safe sex, and limit your number of sexual partners. Check with your local public health authority pre-travel to determine your eligibility for mpox vaccine.  

HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)   is a virus that attacks and impairs the immune system, resulting in a chronic, progressive illness known as AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome). 

High risk activities include anything which puts you in contact with blood or body fluids, such as unprotected sex and exposure to unsterilized needles for medications or other substances (for example, steroids and drugs), tattooing, body-piercing or acupuncture.

Medical services and facilities

Good health care is available throughout the islands.

Some clinics and hospitals may expect immediate cash payment for medical services.

Medical evacuation can be very expensive and you may need it in case of serious illness or injury.

Make sure you get travel insurance that includes coverage for medical evacuation and hospital stays.

Travel health and safety

It can be difficult to get prescriptions refilled.

Ensure you have sufficient medication for your stay and extra in case of emergency.

The decision to travel is the sole responsibility of the traveller. The traveller is also responsible for his or her own personal safety.

Be prepared. Do not expect medical services to be the same as in Canada. Pack a   travel health kit , especially if you will be travelling away from major city centres.

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. The convention applies between Canada and the United States.

If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in the U.S. Virgin Islands, and if the applicable conditions are met, you may apply for the return of your child to the US Virgin Islands court.

If you are in this situation:

• act as quickly as you can
• contact the Central Authority for your province or territory of residence for information on starting an application under The Hague Convention
• consult a lawyer in Canada and in the U.S. Virgin Islands to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
• report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to the Vulnerable Children’s Consular Unit at Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies.

Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country’s judicial affairs.

U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS (December 6, 2021) – As the world responds to new vaccination and testing requirements before boarding an international flight to the United States, officials in the U.S. Virgin Islands are reminding the traveling public that the new rules do not apply to direct travel from the USVI to the U.S. mainland.

“While international travelers to the United States must show proof of a negative COVID-19 test (either antigen or PCR) taken within one calendar day of departure to the U.S., this only applies to the U.S. Virgin Islands if you are arriving in the USVI via air from a foreign location, such as the British Virgin Islands or Antigua,” explained USVI Commissioner of Tourism Joseph Boschulte.

“These travelers are coming from a foreign country and their first point of entry into the United States is either St. Thomas or St. Croix, so the new rules apply,” he explained.

The Commissioner underscored that there are no vaccination or testing requirements for travelers leaving the USVI and heading to the U.S. mainland. “We are an American overseas territory, and as such, travel to St. Croix, St. John, St. Thomas or Water Island is within the United States’ domestic jurisdiction,” the Commissioner reminded, while asserting that travel to the USVI does not require a passport from U.S. citizens arriving from Puerto Rico or the U.S. mainland. 

“We recognize that with new travel mandates, there can be a lot of misunderstanding of the rules,” he said, adding that it is very important for tourism industry stakeholders to continue educating the traveling public that “we are part of the United States.”

The USVI’s testing requirements are for domestic travel to the Territory, for example, from Puerto Rico to St. Croix, or from New York to St. Thomas.

All domestic travelers five years of age or older must use the Travel Screening Portal at  usvitravelportal.com  to submit the required COVID-19 test result prior to traveling to the Territory. Travelers are required to provide evidence of a negative COVID-19 antigen or PCR test result taken within five days of commencement of travel to the Territory. Persons who have been fully vaccinated in the U.S. Virgin Islands may submit evidence of their vaccination status instead of a negative COVID-19 test result.

Travelers should note that the new federal one-day testing requirement for international travel does not apply to marine travel to the USVI. International marine travel still follows a 5-day testing window, and certain vaccination requirements apply to non-U.S. persons.

Hepatitis A

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers one year old or older going to the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Infants 6 to 11 months old should also be vaccinated against Hepatitis A. The dose does not count toward the routine 2-dose series.

Travelers allergic to a vaccine component or who are younger than 6 months should receive a single dose of immune globulin, which provides effective protection for up to 2 months depending on dosage given.

Unvaccinated travelers who are over 40 years old, immunocompromised, or have chronic medical conditions planning to depart to a risk area in less than 2 weeks should get the initial dose of vaccine and at the same appointment receive immune globulin.

Cases of measles are on the rise worldwide. Travelers are at risk of measles if they have not been fully vaccinated at least two weeks prior to departure, or have not had measles in the past, and travel internationally to areas where measles is spreading.

All international travelers should be fully vaccinated against measles with the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, including an early dose for infants 6–11 months, according to  CDC’s measles vaccination recommendations for international travel .

the U.S. Virgin Islands is free of dog rabies. However, rabies may still be present in wildlife species, particularly bats. CDC recommends rabies vaccination before travel only for people working directly with wildlife. These people may include veterinarians, animal handlers, field biologists, or laboratory workers working with specimens from mammalian species.

Prevent bug bites

Bugs (like mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas) can spread a number of diseases in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Many of these diseases cannot be prevented with a vaccine or medicine. You can reduce your risk by taking steps to prevent bug bites.

What can I do to prevent bug bites?

• Cover exposed skin by wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and hats.
• Use an appropriate insect repellent (see below).
• Use permethrin-treated clothing and gear (such as boots, pants, socks, and tents). Do not use permethrin directly on skin.
• Stay and sleep in air-conditioned or screened rooms.
• Use a bed net if the area where you are sleeping is exposed to the outdoors.

What type of insect repellent should I use?

• FOR PROTECTION AGAINST TICKS AND MOSQUITOES: Use a repellent that contains 20% or more DEET for protection that lasts up to several hours.
• Picaridin (also known as KBR 3023, Bayrepel, and icaridin)
• Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) or para-menthane-diol (PMD)
• 2-undecanone
• Always use insect repellent as directed.

What should I do if I am bitten by bugs?

• Avoid scratching bug bites, and apply hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion to reduce the itching.
• Check your entire body for ticks after outdoor activity. Be sure to remove ticks properly.

What can I do to avoid bed bugs?

Stay safe outdoors

If your travel plans in the U.S. Virgin Islands include outdoor activities, take these steps to stay safe and healthy during your trip.

• Stay alert to changing weather conditions and adjust your plans if conditions become unsafe.
• Prepare for activities by wearing the right clothes and packing protective items, such as bug spray, sunscreen, and a basic first aid kit.
• Consider learning basic first aid and CPR before travel. Bring a travel health kit with items appropriate for your activities.
• If you are outside for many hours in heat, eat salty snacks and drink water to stay hydrated and replace salt lost through sweating.
• Protect yourself from UV radiation : use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15, wear protective clothing, and seek shade during the hottest time of day (10 a.m.–4 p.m.).
• Be especially careful during summer months and at high elevation. Because sunlight reflects off snow, sand, and water, sun exposure may be increased during activities like skiing, swimming, and sailing.
• Very cold temperatures can be dangerous. Dress in layers and cover heads, hands, and feet properly if you are visiting a cold location.

Stay safe around water

• Swim only in designated swimming areas. Obey lifeguards and warning flags on beaches.
• Practice safe boating—follow all boating safety laws, do not drink alcohol if driving a boat, and always wear a life jacket.
• Do not dive into shallow water.
• Do not swim in freshwater in developing areas or where sanitation is poor.
• Avoid swallowing water when swimming. Untreated water can carry germs that make you sick.
• To prevent infections, wear shoes on beaches where there may be animal waste.

Keep away from animals

Most animals avoid people, but they may attack if they feel threatened, are protecting their young or territory, or if they are injured or ill. Animal bites and scratches can lead to serious diseases such as rabies.

Follow these tips to protect yourself:

• Do not touch or feed any animals you do not know.
• Do not allow animals to lick open wounds, and do not get animal saliva in your eyes or mouth.
• Avoid rodents and their urine and feces.
• Traveling pets should be supervised closely and not allowed to come in contact with local animals.
• If you wake in a room with a bat, seek medical care immediately. Bat bites may be hard to see.

All animals can pose a threat, but be extra careful around dogs, bats, monkeys, sea animals such as jellyfish, and snakes. If you are bitten or scratched by an animal, immediately:

• Wash the wound with soap and clean water.
• Go to a doctor right away.
• Tell your doctor about your injury when you get back to the United States.

Consider buying medical evacuation insurance. Rabies is a deadly disease that must be treated quickly, and treatment may not be available in some countries.

Reduce your exposure to germs

Follow these tips to avoid getting sick or spreading illness to others while traveling:

• Wash your hands often, especially before eating.
• If soap and water aren’t available, clean hands with hand sanitizer (containing at least 60% alcohol).
• Don’t touch your eyes, nose, or mouth. If you need to touch your face, make sure your hands are clean.
• Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing.
• Try to avoid contact with people who are sick.
• If you are sick, stay home or in your hotel room, unless you need medical care.

Avoid sharing body fluids

Diseases can be spread through body fluids, such as saliva, blood, vomit, and semen.

Protect yourself:

• Use latex condoms correctly.
• Do not inject drugs.
• Limit alcohol consumption. People take more risks when intoxicated.
• Do not share needles or any devices that can break the skin. That includes needles for tattoos, piercings, and acupuncture.
• If you receive medical or dental care, make sure the equipment is disinfected or sanitized.

Know how to get medical care while traveling

Plan for how you will get health care during your trip, should the need arise:

• Carry a list of local doctors and hospitals at your destination.
• Review your health insurance plan to determine what medical services it would cover during your trip. Consider purchasing travel health and medical evacuation insurance.
• Carry a card that identifies, in the local language, your blood type, chronic conditions or serious allergies, and the generic names of any medications you take.
• Some prescription drugs may be illegal in other countries. Call the U.S. Virgin Islands’s embassy to verify that all of your prescription(s) are legal to bring with you.
• Bring all the medicines (including over-the-counter medicines) you think you might need during your trip, including extra in case of travel delays. Ask your doctor to help you get prescriptions filled early if you need to.

Many foreign hospitals and clinics are accredited by the Joint Commission International. A list of accredited facilities is available at their website ( www.jointcommissioninternational.org ).

In some countries, medicine (prescription and over-the-counter) may be substandard or counterfeit. Bring the medicines you will need from the United States to avoid having to buy them at your destination.

Select safe transportation

Motor vehicle crashes are the #1 killer of healthy US citizens in foreign countries.

In many places cars, buses, large trucks, rickshaws, bikes, people on foot, and even animals share the same lanes of traffic, increasing the risk for crashes.

Be smart when you are traveling on foot.

• Use sidewalks and marked crosswalks.
• Pay attention to the traffic around you, especially in crowded areas.
• Remember, people on foot do not always have the right of way in other countries.

Riding/Driving

Choose a safe vehicle.

• Choose official taxis or public transportation, such as trains and buses.
• Ride only in cars that have seatbelts.
• Avoid overcrowded, overloaded, top-heavy buses and minivans.
• Avoid riding on motorcycles or motorbikes, especially motorbike taxis. (Many crashes are caused by inexperienced motorbike drivers.)
• Choose newer vehicles—they may have more safety features, such as airbags, and be more reliable.
• Choose larger vehicles, which may provide more protection in crashes.

Think about the driver.

• Do not drive after drinking alcohol or ride with someone who has been drinking.
• Consider hiring a licensed, trained driver familiar with the area.
• Arrange payment before departing.

Follow basic safety tips.

• Wear a seatbelt at all times.
• Sit in the back seat of cars and taxis.
• When on motorbikes or bicycles, always wear a helmet. (Bring a helmet from home, if needed.)
• Avoid driving at night; street lighting in certain parts of the U.S. Virgin Islands may be poor.
• Do not use a cell phone or text while driving (illegal in many countries).
• Travel during daylight hours only, especially in rural areas.
• If you choose to drive a vehicle in the U.S. Virgin Islands, learn the local traffic laws and have the proper paperwork.
• Get any driving permits and insurance you may need. Get an International Driving Permit (IDP). Carry the IDP and a US-issued driver's license at all times.
• Check with your auto insurance policy's international coverage, and get more coverage if needed. Make sure you have liability insurance.
• Avoid using local, unscheduled aircraft.
• If possible, fly on larger planes (more than 30 seats); larger airplanes are more likely to have regular safety inspections.
• Try to schedule flights during daylight hours and in good weather.

Medical Evacuation Insurance

If you are seriously injured, emergency care may not be available or may not meet US standards. Trauma care centers are uncommon outside urban areas. Having medical evacuation insurance can be helpful for these reasons.

• Pack as light as possible, and leave at home any item you could not replace.

While at your destination(s)

• Carry contact information for the nearest US embassy or consulate .
• Carry a photocopy of your passport and entry stamp; leave the actual passport securely in your hotel.
• Follow all local laws and social customs.
• Do not wear expensive clothing or jewelry.
• Always keep hotel doors locked, and store valuables in secure areas.
• If possible, choose hotel rooms between the 2nd and 6th floors.

There are several ways you can travel without a passport from the USA.

The options include the US states, which are completely free to travel between, the other US territories and certain countries with special allowances as listed below.

Can You Travel Outside the US Without a Passport?

In a nutshell, there are only a select few places that you can travel to outside the US that doesn’t require a passport.

For the most part, traveling to other continents will require a passport and in some cases, a travel Visa that allows you to visit these countries for a short period only. The continents that you would need a passport to include Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, Antarctica, and South America.

A passport is essentially a travel booklet that has the same kind of information that a standard ID has, and is used at points of entry where it’s required.

Each time you pass a border where it’s needed, a border official will look at your passport to confirm your identity before stamping it. This stamp helps to track the amount of time that you are allowed to stay in a country.

If you overstay, you can be punished if you didn’t have special permission to remain in that country for excessive lengths of time. Traveling outside the US, where you don’t need a passport is very different. There is no time limit given if you decide to stay longer for any reason.

This usually isn’t a problem since most people who go outside the US to these special locations are only visiting for a short vacation anyway.

Can You Travel Outside the US Without a Passport on a Cruise?

If you are traveling on a closed-loop cruise returning to the US, there are several countries that you can visit without a passport:

• Cayman Islands Antilles
• St. Kits and Nevis
• The British Virgin Islands

Can You Drive to Mexico Without a Passport?

If you are planning to go to Mexico, you can drive overland to get there without a passport.

Mexico is an interesting destination that many people have enjoyed visiting for many decades. This is one of the few places where you don’t need a passport, but there is a very strange catch to this.

While a standard ID would be considered just fine for crossing the border, Mexico requires that US citizens present a passport card which is also called a SENTRI Card. This is short for Secure Electronics Network for Travelers Rapid Inspection.

It’s different than a REAL ID and is a portable ID card that works just like a passport. It contains your name, nationality, photo, place, date of birth, expiration dates, and a special passport number.

This is presented to border officials when you enter and leave Mexico by car or in a vehicle. If you travel in a car, you will also need an import permit for that vehicle.

You will also need to provide a completed FMM (Multiple Migratory Form) and a completed health declaration form. You also need to show hotel reservations and return tickets.

Bringing children and teens under the age of 16 only need a birth certificate or a student ID. If your kids are naturalized citizens, they will also need to show a naturalization certificate to reenter the US.

Do You Need a Passport To Go To The Bahamas?

Whether or not you need a passport to get to the Bahamas depends entirely on how you get there.

United States citizens can travel to the Bahamas by sea without requiring a passport.  That means if you’re on a cruise or taking a day trip from Florida, you won’t need a passport to enter the country. Anyone traveling by air will still require a passport from their home country.

The Bahamas are one of the most popular cruise destinations on the planet, and the islands help facilitate this tourism boom by creating laws making it easier for travelers to arrive by boat.

Maritime passengers are allowed to use other forms of ID to enter the country, including a passport card, an enhanced driver’s license, a trusted traveler card, or a U.S. military ID.

Do You Need a Passport To Go To Puerto Rico?

US Citizens do not need to present a passport or Visa when they visit Puerto Rico.

In fact, a state-issued ID (e. g. driver’s license) shall suffice as the passport and visa requirements, similar to visiting other U.S States or U. S. territories. The state-issued ID is used for identification purposes.

Additionally, with the implementation of  Real ID Act on May of 2023 , U. S. citizens and travelers shall be allowed to travel domestically as long the state-issued ID complies with the standards set by the REAL ID Act.

Final Thoughts on Traveling Without a Passport

While it is possible to travel without a US passport to many places, it can certainly be more difficult.

It’s also well worth obtaining a SENTRI card or passport book, just in case.

The most important thing is to do your research beforehand and make sure you have all the relevant documents with you.

Entering the USVI from a US Airport

U.S. citizens are not required to have passports or proof of citizenship when entering into the U.S. Virgin Islands from a U.S. airport. Please note however that airlines have different policies and may ask for proof of identity at check-in.

Entering the USVI from a Foreign Airport

All arrivals from foreign airports are required to show proof of citizenship and pass through customs.

Leaving the USVI, Returning to the US Mainland

All persons leaving the USVI, whether American citizens or not, must be prepared to show proof of citizenship upon leaving the USVI to return to the mainland.

• A passport issued under competent authority
• An Alien Registration Card (this applies to United States of America permanent residents only)
• A certified copy of a birth certificate with government issued photo identification (this applies to Canadian and United States citizens only)

Not only is St. Thomas known for its spectacular beaches and blue oceans, but also for being the Caribbean shopping hotspot. Now that's what you call two birds with one stone.

And to top it off, St. Thomas is part of the U.S. Virgin Islands. This means it is a hotspot for U.S. citizens because they enjoy passport-free travel.

Basically, it's the same as boarding a flight in Florida and traveling to New York. However, before you get too excited, you must meet some travel requirements.

In this post, we'll look at the entry requirements for St. Thomas and everything you need to know for your Caribbean Island getaway.

Do You Need A Passport To Go To St. Thomas?

Before we dig too deep into all the travel documents and requirements, the first question that might pop into your head is if you need a passport to go to St. Thomas.

This depends firstly on your country and your U.S. resident status. The reason for saying that is because if you are a U.S. citizen or a U.S. permanent resident, you may enjoy some benefits.

Before you start stressing about whether or not you need a passport, I'm going to explain by breaking it down:

Here comes the benefit of being a U.S. citizen, you don't need to travel with your passport if you are going to St. Thomas. How amazing is that?

Although you don't need your valid U.S. passport to go to St. Thomas, there may be additional documents you need to present when returning to the United States. However, don't worry too much because I'll tell you more about that later in the past.

Once again, you're in luck. Suppose you are a permanent resident of the United States. In that case, you enjoy passport-free travel to St. Thomas and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Just remember, there are also some additional rules for traveling back to the U.S. Mainland, but as I mentioned, we'll get to that later.

Unfortunately, non-U.S. citizens require a passport to enter St. Thomas. Therefore, whether or not you have a U.S. visa, you must still present your passport to the border patrol.

Even if certain citizens have visa-free travel to the United States, they must still have a passport when visiting St. Thomas. Therefore, you must always have your passport with you when traveling, especially if you are a foreign national.

I can only imagine you looking forward to traveling with your children or grandchildren, but there are some things you need to know first.

Please keep in mind that the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) are always on the lookout for missing children, so you must carry the following documents with you when traveling with a minor:

Original or copy of the minor's birth certificate (issued by the Vital Records Department in the state where they were born)

Consular Report of Birth Abroad

Naturalization Certificate

Because of an increase in child abductions and custody disputes, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) strongly advises adults to carry a note from the child's other parent (or, in the case of a child traveling with grandparents, uncles, or aunts, sisters or brothers, friends, or in groups). Please keep in mind that both parents must sign the document.

CBP will accept a hospital-issued birth certificate if the child is a newborn and the actual birth certificate from the Vital Records Department has not yet arrived.

What Documents Can I Present When Traveling To St. Thomas?

We have finally arrived at the part you are probably most antsy about. First of all, you should know that boarding a flight to St. Thomas is considered domestic travel. This means that you must provide a form of identification before boarding your flight.

According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) , the following documents will be accepted:

Driver's licenses or other state photo identity cards issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles (or equivalent)

U.S. passport

U.S. passport card

DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)

U.S. Department of Defense ID, including IDs issued to dependents

Permanent resident card

Border crossing card

State-issued Enhanced Driver's License

An acceptable photo ID issued by a federally recognized Tribal Nation/Indian Tribe

HSPD-12 PIV card

Foreign government-issued passport

Canadian provincial driver's license or Indian and Northern Affairs Canada card

Transportation worker identification credential

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Employment Authorization Card (I-766)

U.S. Merchant Mariner Credential

Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC)

What Documents Must I Present When Traveling From St. Thomas To The USA Without A Passport?

Here is the trickier part of your trip. Suppose you are a U.S. citizen or a U.S. Green Card Holder. In that case, you might need some additional documents if you are traveling without your passport, such as:

U.S. federal or state-issued photo identification document (this is the document you used to enter St. Thomas)

Birth Certificate with a raised-seal

How Will The REAL ID Act Influence Passport Requirements For St. Thomas?

As of May 3, 2023, the REAL ID Act will be implemented. Perhaps you haven't heard of it until now, but don't worry, as I will briefly explain what it will mean for your future St. Thomas getaway.

Unfortunately, this will impact whether or not you need a passport to go to St. Thomas. If you do not have a REAL ID-compliant ID or driver's license, you must have your passport.

If you have some uncertainties about the REAL ID Act, don't worry too much as I believe it would be cleared up by reading the following:

When Do I Need To Get A Real ID?

As soon as May 3, 2023, you can start applying for your REAL ID. You will successfully receive a REAL ID-compliant document after applying for your REAL ID driver's license or ID.

Before you apply, first ensure that you have the required documents. Then, as soon as it has been processed, you can use your new REAL ID-compliant document to board local flights.

So you have your REAL ID driver's license or ID, but how do you know it is REAL ID compliant? Well, the answer is simple. You can check the upper portion of your card for one of the following symbols:

Let's say perhaps you don't have a REAL ID-compliant document; then, you can use one of the following documents to board a flight to St. Thomas:

AT&T and Sprint are the primary cell phone carriers, and they generally honor rates and calling plans in the same way they do when calling from state to state while in the USVI. Other cell phone providers may work, but you'll have to pay high roaming fees.

Despite the hilly terrain, driving in the Virgin Islands is simple. A rental car is helpful if you're renting a villa or staying outside of the main towns. Make sure you're used to driving on the left side of the road, as all three islands require it. Also, note that there are a lot of car rental companies with fair prices.

The currency is the U.S. dollar because it is a U.S. territory. ATMs (automated teller machines) can be found on all three islands. The majority of businesses accept credit cards and traveler's checks. Visa and MasterCard are the most widely accepted credit cards.

Entry requirements.

This advice reflects the UK government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK, for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in the British Virgin Islands (BVI) set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the BVI immigration department .

COVID-19 rules

There are no COVID-19 entry requirements for the BVI.

Countries may restrict travel or bring in rules at short notice. Check with your travel company or airline for changes.

If you test positive for COVID-19, you may need to stay where you are until you test negative. You may also need to seek treatment there.

Airport and ferry charges

Visitors arriving by air or sea are charged an environmental and tourism levy of 10 dollars on arrival.

There is an airport tax of 50 US dollars for all passengers, to be paid when leaving the BVI by air. This consists of:

• 15 dollars departure tax
• 5 dollars security charge departure tax
• 30 dollars airport development fee

The tax is generally included in the ticket price.

If you’re departing the BVI by ferry, you must pay a departure tax of 20 dollars per person or 15 dollars for residents.

Passport validity requirements

If you’re visiting the BVI, your passport should be valid for the period of your stay.

If you are a resident in the BVI, your passport must be valid for at least 3 months from the date you arrive.

Check with your travel provider to make sure your passport and other travel documents meet their requirements.

Visa requirements

British nationals do not need a visa to visit the BVI. The BVI immigration authorities will issue you with a 1-month entry stamp on arrival. You may also be granted an extension for 1 further month.

Extensions for up to 6 months are granted on the discretion of the Chief Immigration Officer, if you can show proof of independent financial means. You may need evidence of accommodation and your plans to leave the BVI at the end of your stay.

Work permits

Travellers who hold an expired work permit and are re-entering the BVI must submit a written request to the Immigration Department at least 5 working days before travel. This also applies to holders of valid work permit exemptions.

If you’re transiting through the BVI

If you’re transiting through the BVI on your way to another country, there is no COVID-19 testing or proof of vaccination status required. However, you should meet the requirements of the country of destination. More information can be found on the Government of the Virgin Islands website .

Vaccination requirements (other than COVID-19)

At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the vaccinations and certificates you need on TravelHealthPro (from the UK’s National Travel Health Network and Centre).

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods that can be brought into and taken out of the BVI. You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Follow customs rules on the import and export of agricultural products and the protection of marine and animal life. There are several marine and animal specimens that must not be taken from the BVI. Check with local customs authorities or the Government’s Conservation & Fisheries Department before buying or attempting to import or export these items.
