KU softball draws Houston on first day of Big 12 tournament

sports team travel jobs

photo by: Carter Gaskins/Special to the Journal-World

KU's Aynslee Linduff (39) and coach Jennifer McFalls share a moment Saturday, March 30, 2024, at Arrocha Ballpark.

After losing 10 consecutive games to conclude the regular season, the Kansas softball team slid to seventh in the Big 12 Conference and will play last-place Houston to open the league’s postseason tournament Wednesday at 5 p.m.

The Big 12 championship at the USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City is nearly 50% larger and a day longer this season after the league added three softball programs — including Houston — last offseason. The Jayhawks looked to be in position to completely bypass the first day, which includes only the bottom four teams, but suffered a sweep at home against fellow newcomer BYU over the weekend, allowing the Cougars to sneak into sixth place on tiebreakers.

The three losses against BYU ran the gamut, from the error-laden opener on Thursday to a 12-2 run-rule defeat Friday to a 3-0 loss on senior day Saturday that saw KU held to two hits.

It all amounted to the nadir of a slump that also featured tough series against two of the top teams in the country, Texas and Oklahoma State, and a midweek blip at home against Kansas City, as KU finished the regular season at 27-24-1 (11-16 Big 12).

The Jayhawks have been led in the circle by pitchers Katie Brooks and Kasey Hamilton, who have combined on the year to start 46 games. Hamilton, the primary starter, was at her best from late February to late March, a period during which in the span of a month, she allowed zero earned runs in nine of her 11 appearances, pitching seven complete games during the stretch. She’s had a more challenging go of it later in the year (albeit often going against tougher competition) and has been credited with just one win since March 24.

Sophomore outfielder Presley Limbaugh missed a month of action but has started all 35 games she’s played, and since returning has been held hitless just twice. She is far and away the leader in batting average for the Jayhawks at .379. Catcher Lyric Moore and infielder Hailey Cripe have six home runs apiece on the year; Cripe is one of two players, along with senior outfielder Angela Price, to start every game this season. On the whole, KU’s offense has largely lagged behind the Big 12 statistically, as it is last in slugging percentage and last in on-base percentage on the season, but has still seen a wide variety of contributors chip in.

Kansas sophomore infielder Hailey Cripe bats against Kansas City on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at Arrocha Ballpark.

In its first year in the Big 12, Houston has experienced struggles much more focused on pitching, where it has a team ERA of 6.05, the worst in the league. Transfers Paris Lehman (Nicholls), Shelby Smith (Seton Hall) and Tamya Waiters (UT Arlington) have combined to make the majority of the starts, led by Smith, who is 10-14 with a 5.17 ERA.

Smith has also batted .330 as a two-way player, but the real standout quality of the Houston offense has been the power in its starting lineup, led by 11 home runs from infielder Jazmyn Rollin (an Arizona State transfer who is slugging .642) and eight each by Lair Beautae, Bree Cantu and Turiya Coleman.

When KU and UH met earlier in the year in Houston, the Jayhawks picked up a road sweep from March 22-24 in a series of hard-fought games. In the 4-3 opener, Cripe hit a go-ahead two-run home run and turned a solo double play late; in the 11-4 Saturday matchup, two lesser-used Jayhawks hit grand slams; in the 2-1 closer, Hamilton threw a complete game and escaped a bases-loaded jam in the seventh inning.

The Cougars have rarely gotten that close in conference play. They beat eventual regular-season champion Texas 12-10 in their first-ever Big 12 game and run-ruled Iowa State a week later, but have won just as many league games in 21 tries since. The closest they got to a series win was in Provo, Utah, when they led BYU 15-13 in extra innings but allowed a walk-off grand slam.

If the Jayhawks can beat Houston for a fourth time this year, they will turn around to face powerhouse Oklahoma, which is merely the No. 2 team in the conference this season, on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. The KU program has shown its capacity for upsets in the past, such as when it beat Oklahoma State 8-7 in a game played over the course of two days in last year’s tournament. However, KU has not beaten OU since 2016; it’s lost 22 straight, with half of those losses coming in fewer than seven innings.

KU last won the Big 12 tournament outright in 2006, including a victory over OU in the final.

The postseason is still a possibility for KU, although the Jayhawks were decidedly on the NCAA Tournament bubble even prior to the BYU series — D1Softball had them as the second-to-last team in the picture, and College Sports Madness as the second team out, on April 30. KU has not made the tournament since 2015, though McFalls took the Jayhawks to the National Invitational Softball Championship two seasons ago, where they lost in the semifinals to Baylor.

The Class 6A football state championship bracket will look a little different in the 2024-25 season.

On Monday, the executive board of the Oregon School Activities Association met to discuss multiple items. Perhaps one of the biggest was making a small adjustment to the structure of the Class 6A football brackets.

Judge forcing Hawaii AG office to give fire probe documents to lawyers handling lawsuits

The Associated Press

HONOLULU — A judge on Friday forced the Hawaii attorney general’s office to turn over to lawyers involved in the hundreds of lawsuits over last summer’s Maui wildfires all documents, interviews and data collected by the outside team hired to investigate the disaster.

Attorneys representing plaintiffs suing over the August fires filed a motion last month asking a judge to compel the state provide them with the material gathered by the Fire Safety Research Institute, which was hired by the state to investigate.

The state refused, saying disclosing the records would “jeopardize and hinder” the investigation. In court documents opposing the motion, the state called the request “premature, baseless and frivolous,” and asked a judge to order that attorneys fees be paid to the state for defending against the motion.

Soon after the deadliest U.S. wildfire in more than a century ripped through the historic town of Lahaina and killed 101 people, Hawaii Attorney General Anne Lopez announced hiring outside investigators. Last month Lopez and representatives from the Fire Safety Research Institute released a report on the first phase of the investigation, which said the head of the emergency management agency dragged his heels about returning to the island amid the unfolding crisis, while a broad communications breakdown left authorities in the dark and residents without emergency alerts.

The aftermath of a wildfire is visible in Lahaina, Hawaii, Aug. 17, 2023. A judge on Friday, May 3, 2024, forced the Hawaii attorney general’s turn over to lawyers involved in the hundreds of lawsuits over last summer’s Maui wildfires all documents, interviews and data collected by the outside team hired to investigate the deadly disaster.

During a Friday hearing on the island of Maui, state Deputy Attorney General David Matsumiya told Judge Peter Cahill the state is concerned that releasing information could prompt the six people who haven’t been interviewed yet to change their stories.

Cahill balked.

“Do you really believe that’s going to be happening?” he asked, clearly upset. “And so what if they change their stories? Aren’t they entitled to?”

Cahill seemed to indicate concerns with the investigation, including whether people interviewed were advised that they weren’t obligated to answer questions.

“By the way, the taxpayers are paying for this,” the judge continued.

Lopez said last month the investigation contract was initially not to exceed $1.5 million, but because they are behind schedule, the contract was extended. According to an updated contract, the cost increased by $2.5 million, not to exceed a total of $4 million.

The judge’s order is of “grave concern,” the attorney general’s office said in a statement after the hearing.

“The independent, objective fact-finding process and analysis is critical to determining what county and state agencies must do to ensure that a tragedy like this never happens again,” the statement said. “Premature release of these materials may allow external factors to influence the analysis.”

The attorney general is reviewing options and will soon decide on an appropriate course of action.

Cahill told Matsumiya he understands the state’s concerns, but not giving the information to the attorneys would delay litigation. The investigation is important, and it was a wise investment to hire an outside agency given the state lacks a fire marshal, he said, “but it’s also important that people have their day in court.”

Cahill noted there are some 400 lawsuits involving thousands of plaintiffs.

“It’s frustrating the process of litigation,” Cahill said, “which is also a truth-seeking mechanism.”

David Minkin, an attorney representing Maui County, suggested to the judge that the investigative process was tainted.

Investigators “showed up in Lahaina, said we’re here from the AG’s office and started talking to people,” without informing them of their rights, he said.

Matsumiya said the state is trying to “protect the integrity of the investigation, which is designed to create a better future for Lahaina, and all of those people in Lahaina.”

But Cahill responded that “the past in this case, given what’s occurred on this island, needs to be taken care of as well,” and that litigation will determine whether there were any legal breaches of duty.

During a separate hearing later Friday to discuss coordination of the lawsuits, Cahill said a handful of lawsuits are scheduled to go to trial in November.

Tennessee company fined nearly $650K for illegally hiring minors to clean slaughterhouses

sports team travel jobs

A Tennessee-based cleaning company has agreed to pay nearly $650,000 in civil penalties after federal investigators found the company employed at least 24 children at two slaughtering and meat packing facilities, the U.S. Department of Labor announced Monday.

A federal court in Iowa approved a consent order and judgment Monday with Fayette Janitorial Service LLC, which requires the company to pay $649,304 in civil penalties, the Labor Department said in a news release . The company must also hire a third-party to implement company policies to prevent the illegal employment of children and create a program for reporting concerns about child labor violations.

The Labor Department obtained a preliminary injunction against Fayette Janitorial in late February after an investigation discovered that the company employed at least 24 children, including children as young as 13 years old, on overnight sanitation shifts at two slaughtering and meat packing facilities in Sioux City, Iowa, and Accomac, Virginia.

Under U.S. law, children under the age 18 are prohibited from being employed in dangerous occupations such as meat and poultry slaughtering, processing, rendering and packing operations. According to the Labor Department, Fayette Janitorial had minors "clean dangerous kill floor equipment such as head splitters, jaw pullers, meat bandsaws, and neck clippers."

"The Department of Labor is determined to stop our nation’s children from being exploited and endangered in jobs they should never have been near," Regional Solicitor Christine Heri said in a statement. "Children in hazardous occupations drove the Fair Labor Standards Act’s passage in 1938. Yet in 2024, we still find U.S. companies employing children in risky jobs, jeopardizing their safety for profit."

The Labor Department reported last February that child labor violations have increased 69% since 2018 . During the last fiscal year, the department said its investigators found that more than 5,800 children had been employed in violation of federal child labor laws.

Starbucks labor fight: Supreme Court poised to back company in 'Memphis 7' union case

Children worked on overnight shifts to clean killing floor

Fayette Janitorial, which is headquartered in Somerville, Tennessee, employed dozens of children at Seaboard Triumph Foods LLC in Sioux City, Iowa, and Perdue Farms in Accomac, Virginia, according to the Labor Department.

According to a federal complaint , department's investigation “found that Fayette employs minors under the age of 18 whose job is to clean the killing floor.” In the complaint, the department alleges that the company employed 15 children in Virginia and at least nine children in Iowa on its overnight sanitation shifts.

The department said investigators witnessed children hiding their faces and carrying "glittered school backpacks" before starting their shifts at the Iowa facility. The children used "corrosive" cleaners to clean kill floor equipment, including head splitters, jaw pullers, bandsaws and neck clippers, according to the department.

At the Virginia facility, the department said at least one child, who was identified as a 14-year-old, suffered severe injuries after the child tried to remove debris from machinery.

On Feb. 27, the department obtained a preliminary injunction against Fayette Janitorial to halt the company's illegal employment of children. The company provides contract sanitation and cleaning services for meat and poultry processing facilities in more than 30 states and employs more than 600 workers, the department said.

The company agreed to nationwide compliance six days after the department filed its temporary restraining order and injunction. Both the Iowa and Virginia facilities also said in February that they had terminated their contracts with Fayette Janitorial.

Recent child labor violations in the U.S.

In recent years, federal authorities have been cracking down on child labor violations across the country, promising to hold employers accountable.

In March, a Tennessee parts supplier was fined for  illegally employing children as young as 14  in dangerous and subjecting them to "oppressive child labor." In the same month, a Baskin-Robbins franchisee in Utah was fined for allowing 64 employees, between the ages 14 and 15, "to work too late in the day and too many hours in a week while school was in session at eight locations," the Labor Department said .

Federal investigators said in January that inadequate safety standards at a poultry processing plant in Mississippi led to the  death of a 16-year-old sanitation worker . The teen died on July 14, 2023, after he was pulled into dangerous machinery while cleaning equipment. It was the second fatality to occur at the facility in just over two years.

A Southern California poultry processor and several related poultry companies, which supplied grocers including Aldi and Ralphs, agreed to pay $3.8 million  last December for violations including  illegally employing children as young as 14 to debone poultry with sharp knifes and operate power-driven lifts to move pallets .

In May 2023, three McDonald's franchisees with a combined 62 restaurants in Kentucky, Indiana, Maryland and Ohio, paid fines totaling over $212,000 after the Labor Department charged them with  violating the labor rights of 305 minors, including two 10-year-olds who were not paid .

A Wisconsin company paid a $1.5 million fine in February 2023 after the Labor Department found it  employed 102 minors ages 13 to 17 in “hazardous occupations” at 13 meat processing facilities in eight states .

The Dallas Mavericks announced Monday that they have agreed to a multi-year contract extension with coach Jason Kidd ahead of the team's second-round playoff series against the Oklahoma City Thunder . Game 1 of that matchup is set for Tuesday night.

"I have known Jason for a long time, and I cannot think of a better, more qualified candidate to lead this team going forward," Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison stated in a press release. "As a former NBA champion Hall of Fame player, Jason brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his role which cannot be duplicated. He has earned the trust and respect of our players and that of so many across the league, and I look forward to working alongside him as we continue to build upon the culture and foundation of success he's helped foster throughout his tenure as head coach."

Terms of the contract were not disclosed, but the deal ends any speculation about Kidd's future in Dallas. ESPN's Dave McMenamin reported earlier this month that Kidd's name had come up in the Los Angeles Lakers ' initial discussions about a replacement for Darvin Ham. Kidd previously worked for the Lakers as an assistant coach from 2019-2021.

The Mavericks are Kidd's third stop as a head coach, and he is 140-106 in three seasons since taking over. He has led the team to two playoff appearances, including a Western Conference Finals run in 2022. With the win over the Los Angeles Clippers in the first round of this postseason, he is now 3-1 in playoff series with the Mavericks.

Kidd's ability to connect with the Mavericks' players, particularly Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving , is a major reason why the Mavericks had so much success this season and the team is willing to commit to him long-term.

"I just know when I look at him, he has that understanding of high-level chess," Kyrie Irving said after the team eliminated the Clippers last week. "When you have a coach like that, that reassures you, reinforces that you're doing the right things, it goes a long way. I definitely feel like we're on the same wavelength as well. We're just proving it every day and just continuing to put one foot in front of the other, taking it step by step. It took me a while.

"When I was a young player, too, I would have liked to be coached by him."

Win or go home in Game 7, and for Bruins coach Jim Montgomery, likely win or lose your job

Coach Jim Montgomery's Bruins squandered two chances to close out the Maple Leafs in Games 5 and 6.

In the heady aftermath of a Saturday night Game 4 win in Toronto, the Bruins were flying high.

They’d swept two road games in a loud and hostile arena, had settled on a goalie whose hot hand was torching the Maple Leafs, and had even gotten the best contribution yet from their best goal scorer. They were heading home with a chance to clinch the series, to move into the second round of these Stanley Cup playoffs at the expense of a fierce and worthy rival.

And yet, nagging worry crept in. Deja vu was the unwelcome guest, as the Bruins found themselves in precisely the same situation they were in a year ago. History dared them to exorcise their demons, to rewrite the story of their shocking 2023 first-round loss to the Panthers, when they led, 3-1, after two road wins and headed home with a chance to clinch, with a win this time around. Immediately, every Bruin focused on finishing the job.

“There’s a lot of guys in our room that have gone through it, just a little while ago,” coach Jim Montgomery said in the bowels of Scotiabank Arena. “It hurt. We’re going to see how much we’ve learned. We’ll see by our start.”

You know the rest. Here the Bruins sit, back at home for a win-or-go-home Game 7, back after two desultory games remembered mostly for just how awful the Bruins played in the first period of each, back to face the demon that has grown exponentially larger since last Saturday night.

And here Montgomery sits, almost certainly coaching for his job.

If the Bruins lose Game 7 (again), if they blow a 3-1 lead (again), if they squander home ice (again), how does Montgomery survive? Listen, we’re not saying it’s an easy call, not after the regular-season success of his two short years at the helm, success that included last year’s record-setting Presidents’ Trophy campaign in what was his first season and Patrice Bergeron’s last. Montgomery leads a team that fills the seats, sells the tickets, and brings the eyeballs to the screens. Those numbers mean as much to ownership’s bottom line as postseason victories do.

But would that leadership really run it back again and give Montgomery another chance? Would they willingly turn the regular season into a monthslong waiting game for the playoffs, an ongoing referendum not on the nightly standings but on the road to the postseason? Would they truly have faith that even if the Bruins were able to position themselves for another Round 1 clinching game, that the nerves, anxiety, and pressure wouldn’t, once again, get in the way? Would they look at the lineup changes Montgomery tried for Game 5 this season, the misplayed goalie juggling act from last year, and accept those decisions as wise, even if hindsight proves they backfired? Would they hear his efforts to change this year’s tone — calling out David Pastrnak after the Game 6 loss — and believe it was appropriate?

At best? Unlikely. At worst? Impossible.

It’s important to remember that this is a brain trust in team president Cam Neely and general manager Don Sweeney who’ve proved their willingness to make a tough coaching call, firing Montgomery predecessor Bruce Cassidy despite many postseason series wins, including the 2019 one that went all the way to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final. Cassidy’s occasionally rough tongue had worn out its welcome with players tiring of his demanding ways, and Montgomery’s fresh approach paid immediate dividends.

Until the playoffs.

Somehow, the Bruins went into Saturday night’s game against a heated rival they’ve dominated for decades on the wrong end of the pressure meter. Somehow, the Bruins had more to lose, despite a playoff opponent that hasn’t won the Stanley Cup since 1967, hadn’t beaten them in the playoffs since 1959, had lost three Game 7s to them in the last 11 years alone, 2013, 2018, and 2019. The Bruins had home ice, hosted a team with its own Red Sox-like championship curse, yet bore more of the brunt of history.

As ESPN statisticians pointed out Thursday night, a Bruins loss would make them the first team in any major team sport (NBA, MLB, NHL) to blow 3-1 series leads in consecutive seasons. That would be quite an ignominious way to endorse keeping a coach.

What a reversal of fortune. When the Bruins left Toronto after Game 4, having swept those two games to head home with a chance to clinch, they departed the ice to a chorus of hometown boos, fans disgusted as they were with the way their Maple Leafs were getting pushed around the ice. The Leafs were staggered. It was their coach, Sheldon Keefe, who was being peppered with questions about his team’s and the franchise’s culture. Worse still, the team’s top scorer, Auston Matthews, had left Game 4 early with an illness, one bad enough for him to miss the next two games.

But Keefe and Co. rallied, channeling the unique energy that comes when a team is out of options and desperate, playing with a sort of reckless yet controlled abandon that thwarted everything the Bruins tried, blocking shots, filling lanes, and generally driving the Bruins nuts. Meanwhile, the Bruins turtled, and never worse than at the start of each potential clincher, a grand total of three shots in the two first periods that speaks more to their level of anxious energy and squeezing the sticks a bit too tightly than any verbal admission could.

It fell to Montgomery to change the narrative. Players play, but coaches put them in position to play, coaches set the tone from the top, and coaches face the music in the end.
