The best time to visit Kruger National Park is during the dry winter months from May to September. At this time, the bush thins out, and animals congregate around waterholes and rivers. Conditions tend to get better as winter progresses, and September is particularly lovely since the mornings are less chilly than in mid-winter. The best wildlife viewing time also coincides with the low season, making it even more attractive.

May to September – Dry Season – Winter

  • Wildlife gathers around water and vegetation thins out making viewing much easier
  • It is low season, except for the school holidays, and the camps and roads are less busy
  • Sunny skies and no rain
  • Mild daytime temperatures and low humidity
  • Virtually no risk of malaria
  • It is very dry and dirt roads become dusty
  • Early morning game drives in open vehicles are cold; warm clothing is required

  • Birding is excellent, and the migratory birds are present
  • Wildlife viewing is not as good as during the Dry season
  • It is high season, and the main camps get busy
  • Hot and humid in the middle of the day
  • It is advisable to take antimalarial medication

For many an in-the-know wildlife-lover, Kruger — South Africa's first national park — is one of the greatest game reserves on earth. Covering an area the size of Wales, it boasts a bounty of incredible beasts within its borders, including an abundance of the Big Five. But with seasonal variations, deciding the best time to visit Kruger National Park can be tricky, which is where this feature will come in handy...

Month by month weather guide to Kruger National Park

Best time for a safari in kruger national park.

Offering different landscapes, conditions and experiences around the year, the best time to visit Kruger National Park depends on what you want to see and do.

These differences are due to the fact that the park experiences two main seasons — dry and wet — with the May to September dry season usually considered to be the best time for wildlife watching.

As for the reason, during these dry months, the sparseness of vegetation draws animals to congregate around watering holes and rivers, making them easier to spot. At the same time, the weather is cooler and more comfortable for game drives.

Meanwhile, the  October to April wet season sees the park adorn lusher livery. Being migratory season, this is also the best time to visit Krueger National Park if you love birds, or fancy seeing new borns — many animals give birth through the wet season.

In addition to increased rainfall, the wet season also heralds a period of hotter, more humid weather, with afternoon thunderstorms common.

In summary, the dry season is better for a broader range of wildlife-watching experiences in cooler conditions, but if you prefer lusher landscapes and have a special interest in birds, consider visiting in the wet season.

To help you figure out the best time to visit Kruger National Park to satisfy your preferences and interests, here's more detail on weather around the year.

Weather in Kruger National Park in January

Falling in the rainy season,   January is among the wettest months in Kruger National Park, with heavy rain often falling in short, intense thunderstorms during the afternoon or evening.

It’s also one of the hottest months of the year in the park, with temperatures ranging from 20°C (68°F) in the early mornings to 30°C (86°F) during the day.

With this heat comes high humidity levels, which can make walking safaris more challenging.

Weather in Kruger National Park in February

In February, Kruger National Park continues to experience wet season conditions. As such, it’s similar to January — hot, humid and rainy, with temperatures ranging from 20°C (68°F) to 30°C (86°F).

On the plus side, rain usually comes in the form of heavy thunderstorms in the afternoon or evening, which can be pretty spectacular. And, thanks to said rain and storms, the green scenery is stunning.

Weather in Kruger National Park in March

Though it still experiences wet season rain, heat and humidity, March sees Kruger National Park begin to transition into its drier period.

While daytime temperatures are hot, typically ranging from the mid to high 30s°C,   night-time temperatures start to cool down. In addition, March sees a decrease in rainfall in comparison with the peak wet season months of December to February.

That said, afternoon thunderstorms are still common, but lessen as the month progresses.

Weather in Kruger National Park in April

April marks the transition from summer to autumn in Kruger National Park. As such, it heralds cooler temperatures and a reduction in rainfall.

In terms of the numbers, daytime temperatures typically range from about 25°C to 30°C (77°F to 86°F).

While the landscape remains lush and green, reduced rainfall means drier conditions start to thin the vegetation. This improves visibility for watching wildlife as animals become more concentrated around water sources.

Note that while birdwatching remains good in April, migratory species may start leaving as the month progresses.

Weather in Kruger National Park in May

Come May, Kruger National Park sees the onset of the dry season, which brings about a distinct change in weather. By which we mean cooler temperatures, low humidity, and minimal rainfall.

Daytime temperatures   range from 25°C to 28°C (77°F to 82°F), while night-time and early morning temperatures can   drop as low as 10°C (50°F) or even cooler, especially towards the end of the month.

Weather in Kruger National Park in June

June sees Kruger National Park in the heart of its dry season, with daytime temperatures ranging from 22°C to 26°C (72°F to 79°F).

Meanwhile, expect it to be pretty cold at night and in the early morning, when it can drop to below 10°C (50°F), particularly in southern areas of the park.

Rainfall is very rare in June, with the sparse vegetation and drying up of some smaller waterholes improving opportunities to watch wildlife around watering holes and rivers.

Weather in Kruger National Park in July

Sitting bang in the middle of dry season, the weather in Kruger National Park in July is cool and pretty much free from rain.

Usually ranging from 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F), average daytime temperatures are mild, and drop to a chilly 5°C (41°F) at night.

Though July is one of the peak months for watching wildlife in Kruger National Park, the absence of migratory species means bird-watching experiences will be less diverse.

Weather in Kruger National Park in August

If you were put off by the news that July can see Kruger’s temperatures drop to near freezing, you’ll be glad to hear things are warming up (a little…) in August.

During this month, the park experiences the tail end of the dry season as it moves towards spring. Dry conditions persist, with gradually increasing daytime temperatures averaging 25°C to 30°C (77°F to 86°F).

That said, night-time and early morning temperatures   remain cool, averaging around 10°C (50°F).

All of which means conditions for wildlife viewing remain outstanding. In addition, August is an especially great month for spotting predators as they take advantage of the easier visibility of prey, and the predictability of water sources.

Weather in Kruger National Park in September

Come September, spring is in the air in Kruger National Park. Daytime temperatures see a significant rise, typically ranging between 28°C and 32°C (82°F to 90°F).

As a bonus, this rise in heat can herald an increase animal activity around water sources at cooler times of the day.

Though still relatively dry, September tends to experience occasional spring rains towards the end of the month.

Alongside being a transitional period for birdlife — with the first migratory birds arriving towards the end of the month — September also sees an increase in human visitors.

Weather in Kruger National Park in October

In October, Kruger National Park moves into the early stages of the wet season. This is marked by rising temperatures and increased chance of rain.

Expect daytime temperatures to reach 30°C to 35°C (86°F to 95°F), with this rising through the month. As for the rain, as the month wears on, sporadic showers and thunderstorms are also on the rise.

On that note, given that October is one of the last months for prime game viewing before the onset of heavy rains, the park can be quite busy.

Weather in Kruger National Park in November

Being the beginning of the wet season, November in Kruger National Park is characterised by regular rainfall, with thunderstorms and showers frequent and widespread.

Though usually short-lived, these rains tend to falls in the afternoon or evening and can be quite heavy. At the same time, the rising temperatures range from 30°C to 35°C (86°F to 95°F).

While the lusher vegetation and abundance of water can make watching wildlife more challenging than in the dry season, the fresh growth attracts herbivores, which in turn attracts predators.

November is also an excellent time for birdwatching, as the park sees more migratory bird species arrive from the north.

Weather in Kruger National Park in December

Come December, South Africa’s summer wet season in in full swing, which means it’s hot and humid, with daytime temperatures ranging from 30°C to 35°C (86°F to 95°F).

Rainfall is regular, with dramatic thunderstorms often bursting forth in the afternoon and evening.

Though the availability of water mean animals are less concentrated around watering holes — which makes them trickier to find — December offers opportunities to see new-borns, It's also a top month for birdwatching.

As will be apparent from our run-down through the weather across every month, the best time for a safari in Kruger National Park is during the dry season months.

That said, if bird-watching is a top priority, visiting in the wet season will afford opportunities to see an abundance of migratory birds you won’t be able to see in the dry season.

It’s all a question of weighing up your wildlife-watching priorities with your weather preferences.

The Best Time to Visit Kruger National Park

safari in kruger in september

Weather in Kruger National Park

Attractions in kruger national park.

The best time to visit Kruger National Park is during South Africa's dry season, which typically falls between April and September. Dry season is the best time to visit Kruger National Park due to the lovely temperatures that occur during this time. Temperatures can range from the 40s F in the evenings to the mid-80s F during the day. Since the main objective of visitors to Kruger National Park is sighting animals in the bush, dry season with low amounts of rain is the perfect time to visit the park.

Overall the range of temperatures in Kruger National Park go from the high 70s F to the low 90s F. Thus visitors can enjoy extremely pleasant temperatures year-round at the park. While dry season is the best time to visit the park, July, August, and September are the driest months and can cause an abundance of animal deaths. If you're visiting through the extremely dry months, proceed with caution. Rainy season occurs between October through March, making it a difficult time to spot animals due to heavy showers.

Kruger National Park is made up of a host of key sites and wilderness trails for visitors to explore. The biggest attraction is, of course, the abundance of wildlife including the big five (elephants, lions, buffalo, leopards, and rhinos). Many venture to the park to explore the grounds in 4X4 trucks on safari, but the park also offers rustic camping faculties and trails for exploring the flora and fauna spread amongst 7,722 square miles of zoned wilderness areas. Trails worth discovering include Bushman’s trail, home to beautiful rocky cliffs and a botanical reserve, and Wolhuter trail, which is the oldest trail in the park.

January is one of the hottest and wettest months to visit Kruger Park, due to it being in the midst of rainy season. It is during the summer season for the region and can be difficult to enjoy game walks and drives due to the rain. Nevertheless, visitors can expect for rain showers to be sporadic during the day and mornings are generally clear.

Events to check out: During the month of January Kruger National Park hosts birding events each weekend hosted by SANParks Honorary Rangers. These events are available at various camps throughout Kruger National Park.

Hot and wet weather conditions persist through the month of February, with temperatures averaging 90 F. The climate can be muggy so pack a change of clothes from day to night outings. Some tourists prefer to relax during the mid-day in their air-conditioned lodges while enjoying safari game drives in the early morning and cool off during the evening. Late afternoons and evenings on occasions bring about thunderstorms which can be quite refreshing.

Events to check out: Birding events and sighting opportunities continue through the month of February with the SANParks Honorary Rangers.

On the tail end of rainy season, March brings about subtropical rainstorms and beautiful scenery for photography buffs. However, due to the rainy climate in addition to being a bit challenging to spot animals, the rain draws out mosquitos who make it difficult to enjoy a game drive or walk in the bush. Evening temperatures average in the mid-60s F and daytime highs hover around the high 80s F.

Events to check out:   The birding weekends hosted by the South African National Parks honorary rangers take place through mid-March.

By the month of April, high temperatures begin to cool down averaging around 85 F during this transitional month. Rainfall and high levels of humidity begin to disperse making it a great time to visit Kruger National Park. Visitors can expect the landscape to be at its greenest and for vegetation to be thick and lush. However, due to the large amounts of vegetation during this month, it can be trying for tourists to spot game in the wild.

Events to check out: The weekly Summerfields 5K run are a great activity to do during the fall month of April as temperatures cool off.

May is a great month for game viewing in the park, as the vegetation thins during the dry season. Rain is rare during the month so it’s a great time to enjoy viewing animals in the bush. It is also mating season for many animals, especially antelopes, making it a prime time to spot animals looking for their partners in the wild while on safari. By late May, average early morning temperatures typically fall to around 54 F as highs average around 80 F.

Events to check out: The Virtual Vitality 10K Run occurs in May at Kruger National Park giving running enthusiasts a chance to participate in the race virtually or at the park in person.

June ushers in the winter and dry months in South Africa, thus making it a pretty pleasant time to visit Kruger Park due to the cooler winter temperatures. In June the average high temperature is around 78F during the day and a low of 47F so it is recommended to bring a jacket for the evenings. It is a fantastic time for game viewing as there is little rainfall, so animals come out to find small amounts of water available.

Events to check out: June is a prime time to visit and get shoulder season pricing by safari operators and tour companies.

Dry season continues through the month of July, still making it a prime time to visit Kruger National Park. Cooler temperatures prevail with average highs near 79 F during the day and the high 40s F in the evenings. With little to no rain, it is a great time to enjoy the outdoors as there is no need to fight off many misquotes in the park.

Events to check out: July is high season for visiting Kruger National Park and experiencing game drives.

August is the tail end of the dry, winter season which offers warm and mild days, with average high temperatures around 80 F and average lows of 52 F. Early morning and late evening game drives occur during the lower temperatures so it’s advised for visitors to bring a jacket and sweater to keep warm. As long as it is not uncharacteristically dry, August is a great time for spotting wildlife in the park.

Events to check out: Continued opportunities for game viewing on safari drives with park rangers.

The spring month of September is an excellent time for venturing to Kruger National Park, as average mid-afternoon temperatures hover around 84 F. Early morning and evening temperatures are around 57 F, making it pleasant for game drives either early morning, mid-afternoon, or through the evening.

Events to check out: Baroque in the Bush are three days of Baroque concerts held at Shingwedzi in the Kruger National Park. Visitors can enjoy an array of concerts held in a large thatched veranda overlooking the river.

Spring-like temperatures continue through the month of October. However, as it is close to the end of dry season, brief showers and rainstorms begin in October bringing about the opportunity for vegetation to reappear in the park. Additionally, many animals give birth in the park during this time making it a lively time for exciting animal sightings.

Events to check out: Steppe eagles begin to arrive in the park making it a great time for birders to enjoy treks on the trails to spot them.

Rainy season starts picking up during the month of November in the park, which brings with it higher levels of humidity and mosquitoes are more prominent. The summer month can offer average temperatures of 90 F and late afternoon thunderstorms often occur.

Events to check out: Loads of young animals are visible making it an ideal time for game drives.

December can also be a difficult time to enjoy Kruger National Park due to the continuation of the rainy season storms and muggy air. It’s a must to pack rain gear and mosquito repellent as both rain and bugs will be out in droves during the rainy month.

Events to check out: Impala breeding season brings out an array of predators to spot while on safari.

Best Time to Go on Safari in the Kruger National Park

safari in kruger in september

One thing that makes the Kruger National Park a fantastic safari destination is that there really is not a bad time to go. The Kruger National Park has two main seasons, a dry season and a wet season. The wet and dry seasons each feature unique landscapes and viewing opportunities, so one might say that the best time to go on safari in the Kruger National Park may depend on what you want to see.

Kruger National Park Dry Season

It is no secret that the dry winter months from May to Otcober have been dubbed as the best time to go on safari in the Kruger National Park. Vegetation is sparse and animals have to gather at permanent water sources for a drink making them easier to spot. There is also virtually no rainfall during this time. Winter temperatures drop below 10˚C (50˚F) in the early mornings and evenings, however, the days warm up and temperatures increase to 24˚C (75˚F) by the afternoons.

Kruger National Park Wet Season

Make no mistake, visiting the Kruger National Park in wet season is a beautiful time to go too, many prefer the lush green vegetation. Although it’s wet season in the Kruger, it is also summer. Peak summer temperatures, from December to February, are well into the thirties and can reach up to a scorching 40˚C (104˚F). This is however the wet season and afternoon thunderstorms bring a slight relief from the heat.

safari in kruger in september

January in the Kruger National Park

January is also the peak of the rainy season, so visitors should be prepared for occasional thunderstorms and heavy downpours. January is one of the warmest months of the year in the park. While the summer heat can make for uncomfortable conditions, it also means that the park’s vegetation is lush and green, and many animals are more active during the early morning and late afternoon when temperatures are cooler. This is when the game drives take place. Despite the heat and humidity, January is a great time to visit the Kruger National Park for those who want to experience the park’s wildlife and natural beauty at its best.

Weather: Average daily temperature from 20°C – 33°C and high humidity. Expect occasional thunderstorms and short, but heavy downpours throughout the day.

Tip: Be sure to pack light, breathable clothing and plenty of sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, so it’s a good idea to bring a raincoat or umbrella.

February in the Kruger national Park

February is considered to be one of the warmest and wettest months in Kruger National Park. The humidity is also high, making it feel hotter than it actually is. February can be a great time to visit Kruger National Park for those who don’t mind the heat and rain. You can expect frequent thunderstorms and heavy rainfalls during this month, which can sometimes lead to flash floods. However, the rain also brings new life to the park, and the vegetation is lush and green, making it a scenic experience with beautiful lush landscapes.

Weather: Average daily temperature from 20°C – 32°C and high humidity. Expect occasional thunderstorms and short, but heavy downpours throughout the day.

March in the Kruger national Park

March is the end of the rainy season and also the last month of Summer. The temperatures are warm and humid, and you can expect afternoon thundershowers. The Kruger’s scenery is magnificent in March. The vegetation is thick, green and lush making the landscapes really beautiful. With the thick vegetation it can be more difficult to spot the wildlife. The rivers  are full and there is an abundance of water around the park, therefore fewer animals congregate around the water holes. Staying in the private reserves will be an advantage, because the vehicles are allowed off road on the game drives to track the wildlife. With the summer rain and humidity levels, March is in high season for mosquitoes.

Weather: Average daily temperature from 20°C – 31°C and high humidity. Expect occasional thunderstorms and short, but heavy downpours throughout the day.

April in the Kruger national Park

April is the beginning of autumn in Kruger National Park and the weather is generally warm and pleasant. The temperatures are cooler than in the hot summer months, making it more comfortable for visitors to explore the park. Considering April is the end of the rainy season, it is a great a great time to visit the Kruger National Park. Although it is the end of rainy season, you can expect occasional thundershowers in the afternoon. The vegetation is still green and lush, and the rivers and waterholes are full. With the thick vegetation it can be more difficult to spot the wildlife. Staying in the private reserves will be an advantage, because the vehicles are allowed off road on the game drives to track the wildlife.

Weather: Average daily temperature from 17°C – 29°C and high humidity. Expect occasional thunderstorms and short, but heavy downpours throughout the day.

Tip: Changing of the seasons invites an unpredictable weather pattern. It’s always a good idea to pack warm clothing for the cooler mornings and evenings.

May in the Kruger national Park

The Month of May marks the start of dry season in the Kruger National Park and is an excellent time to visit. The day time tempretures in May are still warm, while the evenings start to cool. The weather makes it a very comforatble time of year to visit. May is the end of the rainy season in the the Kruger National Park and the vegetation is lush and green. The thinning vegetation helps in spotting wildlife and May is considered an excellent time to see animals on safari in the Kruger National Park.

May is an ideal time to go to the Kruger National park due to its pleasant temperatures and favourable weather conditions. It is also a quiter time of year to visit before the June/ July school holidays.

Weather: Average daily temperature from 12°C – 28°C and high humidity. Expect occasional thunderstorms and short, but heavy downpours throughout the day.

Tip: Early mornings and evenings can be quite chilly and this is when the game drives take place. Temperatures can drop to around 10°C or lower, so make sure to bring some warm layers for these times.

June in the Kruger national Park

June is a good time to go to the Kruger National Park, but you can expect cooler temperatures. The days are mild, but the evenings and morning can get cold. Although the days are mild, June is the coldest month in the Kruger National Park. June is very much dry season and it is an excellent time to spot wildlife in the Kruger national Park. The vegetation is thinner than in the summer months, which is an advantage when tracking the wildlife. The lack of rainfall in June creates good wildlife spotting oppertunites at the waterholdes. June is a popular time for school holidays, so the park may be busier than usual. Especially at the family friendly lodges.

In June the best game drives take place near the rivers and water sources which are plentiful in the Southern region of the Kruger National Park.

Weather: Average daily temperatures from 09°C – 25°C and high humidity. Expect occasional thunderstorms and short, but heavy downpours throughout the day.

July in the Kruger National Park

July is not much warmer than June and has smiliar tempretures and weather conditions. July is an excellent time to go on safari in the Kruger National Park. It is the middle of the dry season, which means that animals tend to congregate around water sources, making them easier to spot. Additionally, the vegetation is less dense, which also makes it easier to see wildlife. However, be prepared for cold mornings and evenings, as temperatures can drop significantly during this time of year. Game drives take place in teh mornings and afternoons, so you will need to dress warm and be prepared. June is a popular time to visit the Kruger National Park, so be sure to book accommodations and activities in advance.

August in the Kruger National Park

August is in the peak of dry season in the Kruger National Park, which is considered the best time to go. Although August is an excellent time to go on safari in the Kruger National Park, it is also the busiest and it is essential to book your accommodation far in advance. The weather is usually dry, warm and sunny.  Temperatures can be chilly in the mornings and evenings, so it’s important to bring warm clothing. With the low humidity in August and cooler temperatures in the evenings, this is consider low season for mosquitoes.

There is little to no rain in August and it is a very dry time in the Kruger. The vegetation is spare and collarless and it is an excellent time to spot wildlife as they gather around water sources.

Weather: Average daily temperatures from 11°C – 27°C and high humidity. Expect occasional thunderstorms and short, but heavy downpours throughout the day.

September in the Kruger National Park

September is amazing in the Kruger National Park and an excellent time to visit. September in the Kruger national park falls in the dry season, which is considered the best time to go to the Kruger National Park for a safari. There is little to no rain in this month and vegetation is sparse and colorless, wildlife sightings are frequent, as animals congregate around water sources. September is considered one of the best times to spot the famous Big-5 as well as other incredible wildlife.Temperatures are also warmer in September, making it a comfortable time to explore the park.

September is a busy month in the Kruger National park and it is difficult to find accommodation over this period, unless you book far in advance. It is known to be a little quieter than July and August which are considered to be the height of peak season.

Weather: Average daily temperatures from 14°C – 29°C and high humidity. Expect occasional thunderstorms and short, but heavy downpours throughout the day.

Kruger National Park in October

October is another excellent time to visit Kruger National Park and is also considered the best time to go by many experienced safari enthusiasts. With Summer approaching the days start to warm up. This gives you the opportunity to enjoy many outdoor activities as well as lounge in the sun when you are taking some time out to relax at the lodge. October is not as busy as the peak of the dry season and it’s easier to find availability at the best safari lodges. October in the Kruger National Park is the start of shoulder season and is also the start of birthing season, so you may be lucky enough to see many animals with their young. The heavy rains have not yet started in October, which means that water sources are still scarce and wildlife tends to gather around them. This is an excellent  time to see a wide variety of animals.

Another benefit of visiting Kruger National Park in October is the abundance of birdlife. As the summer season approaches, many migratory birds arrive in the park, adding to the already impressive number of resident species. Birdwatchers will have a field day spotting everything from eagles and vultures to colorful bee-eaters and kingfishers.

Weather: Average daily temperatures from 17°C – 30°C and high humidity. Expect occasional thunderstorms and short, but heavy downpours throughout the day.

Tip: Generally a dry month, although there may be occasional light rain showers in the afternoon. It’s always a good idea to pack warm clothing for the cooler mornings and evenings.

Kruger National Park in November

November is a great time to visit Kruger National Park in South Africa. During November, the weather is generally warm and dry in the Kruger National Park, which means that game viewing can be excellent. The vegetation is also less dense, making it easier to spot wildlife. However, it is important to note that November falls within the park’s rainy season, which means that there may be occasional thunderstorms.

Weather: Average daily temperatures from 19°C – 31°C and high humidity. Expect occasional thunderstorms and short, but heavy downpours throughout the day.

Tip: Be sure to pack light, breathable clothing and plenty of sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, so it’s a good idea to bring a raincoat or umbrella

Visiting Kruger National Park in December

The Kruger National Park in December is very hot and also the wettest time of the year. Given that December is holiday month it is a very busy time of year to visit and the most expensive. The weather in the Kurger National Park in December is hot and humid and you can expect temperatures over 30 degrees Celsius with afternoon thundershowers.

Visiting the Greater Kruger during the hot summer months will provide you with incredible green landscapes, while winters are dry with cloudless sunny days and provide easy animal spotting due to sparse vegetation. If you get the opportunity to plan your trip to the Kruger, regardless of the season, take it! A visit to the Kruger any time of year promises to be a great African wildlife safari.

Weather: Average daily temperatures from 20°C – 26°C and high humidity. Expect occasional thunderstorms and short, but heavy downpours throughout the day.

Visiting the Kruger in Shoulder Season

There is however one specific time of year we find particularly intriguing to visit the Kruger, and that is the shoulder season between mid-winter and summer.

September and October can get very humid in anticipation of the arrival of summer rains. As the first rains of the season start to fall a magical season unfolds, making it a very special time to visit, and in our opinion, the best time to go on safari in the Kruger National Park.

Here are the top 9 reasons to visit the Kruger from September through to November:

  • As the rains fall, dry landscapes start to transform into lush surrounds. New greenery emerges but the vegetation is still fairly sparse compared to the end of the rainy season, making it unobtrusive to spotting wildlife.
  • Early rains of the season clear the skies of dry winter dust. The air is clear and fresh.
  • Although rains may start to fall more frequently, the downpours are generally in the afternoons and clear up quickly, so your game drives are rarely affected by the rain.
  • This time of year is the season for new-borns. Just after the first seasonal rains impala lambs are born all within a two to three-week period. You will witness loads of baby antelope, elephant , monkeys, and warthogs. Get your camera ready!
  • Lots of new-born animals mean lots of easy prey for predators. This is therefore also a good time to see predators in action.
  • Migratory birds make their way back to the Kruger during spring resulting in a fantastic time for birding enthusiasts to start ticking off species on their bird watching list.
  • Morning and evening temperatures during this time are not too cold.
  • Private game reserves limit the number of vehicles accessing the conservation area to prevent crowding and provide an exclusive experience no matter the season. Peak summer season is however still busier than other times of the year and visiting between September and November allows you to miss that busy period.
  • Experience electric thunderstorms in the evenings, a magnificent display of lightning in the skies. Thunder clouds with rays of sunlight streaming through can make for incredible photographic backdrops. Rainbows also make their charming appearance amidst the stormy skies.

Lukimbi Safari Lodge

The Kruger National Park is one of the most famous and visited National Parks in Africa, for good reason. Home to an incredibly diverse wildlife population including the Big 5, a wide range of predators, the biggest collection of mammal species in Africa and an amazing range of bird species - the Kruger Park is a mecca for wildlife encounters.

Over and above the endless African wildlife within the reserve, there are also an incredibly large and unique variety of luxury lodges within and surrounding Kruger National Park.

The Kruger National Park is a destination that is generally considered to be good all year-round.

The attraction to the Kruger National Park is most certainly the wildlife and there is no question that the dry winter season from May to October is considered the best time to experience phenomenal game viewing and walking safaris. The bush is less dense and animals tend to gather around the fewer permanent water sources, allowing for better viewing opportunities.

Mid-winter - June to August - is a very comfortable time of year to visit the Kruger as there are few mosquitoes, little if any rain and temperatures are pleasantly warm during the day and refreshingly cool at night. The bone-dry, end-of-winter months of September and October often experience uncomfortably hot and humid conditions but concentrations of animals around water sources are at their highest - this period is often regarded as the best game-viewing time for a Kruger safari.

The summer rains arrive from November onwards , peak in January and February and end around April. The Kruger is transformed into a beautiful, thriving green landscape and it makes for superb photography. Game viewing is still good with many young animals around, making it a predator's paradise. It is also the best time for bird watching as well as safari-and-beach holiday combinations.

The Kruger National Park is considered a low malaria area, however, we would recommend consulting a medical practitioner for advice about malaria.

The Kruger National Park is also very popular during the long December/January school holidays, so should you be looking to travel during this time period, we strongly recommend that you book well in advance and consider the northern parts of the park or the Kruger's private reserves and concessions, should you desire a less crowded experience.

The Kruger National Park is regarded as the ultimate safari destination and the largest in South Africa . With almost two million hectares of pristine wilderness, the park is split into northern and southern reserves. The northern reserves are often referred to as the Greater Kruger National Park .

Home to the famous Big 5 : lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo, and the highest number of large mammal species on any African reserve, the Kruger offers a rewarding safari experience and an array of accommodation options including luxury lodges and self-catering. Activities offered at most reserves include morning and afternoon/evening open vehicle game drives and guided bush walks. Some reserves offer optional local village tours, hot air ballooning, elephant interactions, visits to animal rehabilitation centers, treehouse sleep-outs and photographic safaris.

Best Times To Visit Kruger National Park

The best time to visit Kruger National Park is at the beginning or end of the region's dry season, which falls between April and September. During Kruger's dry season, temperatures are mostly pleasant (with nighttime temps dipping into the high 40s and daytime temps occasionally reaching into the mid-80s). What's more, vegetation is sparse and water levels are low due to the lack of rain, meaning visitors will have a better chance of spotting animals. However, extreme dry seasons can also result in increased animal deaths, so it's best to avoid visiting in July, August and September, the season's driest months. And in the rainy season (from October to March), abundant rainstorms and foliage can make it difficult to see animals.

TOP REASONS TO VISIT THE KRUGER NATIONAL PARK DURING THE DRY WINTER SEASON

Prime time for game viewing, optimal visibility due to sparse vegetation, mild temperatures & minimal rain, best time to visit / low season.

The best time of year to visit the Kruger National Park is during the region’s dry winter season. Which takes place from May through to September. This is due to the prime game viewing opportunities visitors will get to experience during this time of year. And as most local and international visitors to this top South African National Park come for the incredible wildlife sightings. • Prime time for incredible wildlife sightings

As the water levels are extremely low, wildlife will gather around the park’s surrounding water sources. Thereby providing visitors with some incredible and rewarding game viewing opportunities. This period is therefore regarded as the best game-viewing time for a Kruger safari
  • The dry season is the best time of the year for walking safaris in the Kruger National Park. Providing visitors with a unique perspective of the region’s wildlife and surroundings
  • Vegetation is low and sparse at this time of year, thereby making animals easier to spot and follow

TOP REASONS TO VISIT THE KRUGER NATIONAL PARK DURING THE WET SUMMER SEASON

Lush greenery due to high rainfall, park is filled with newborn wildlife, great birdlife sightings, excellent photography opportunities.

Although the Kruger National Park’s wet season is not considered the best time to visit the Kruger, it does offer visitors a slightly different experience and perspective. As well as a few unexpected surprises and adventures that will be thoroughly enjoyed by nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts.

The Kruger National Park’s wet summer season takes place from October through to March. The summer rains in the Kruger Park usually start from the end of October/start of November. With it peaking in the months of January and February and ending around April. As the Kruger Park’s wet summer season is filled with subtropical rainstorms. It is often referred to as the ‘Green Season’. With the landscapes of the Kruger transforming into a beautiful lush green paradise that stretches as far as the eye can see. Making it a superb time of year for photographers and nature lovers from around the world. The higher levels of rainfall also fill the rivers and waterholes that have dried up over the dry winter season. Completely transforming the Kruger from a dry oasis into a lush nirvana of greenery.

Although the Kruger National Park’s wet summer season is characterised by high levels of rainfall. It also marks the time of year where the region’s temperatures start to rise significantly. The Kruger’s Park’s wet season is therefore characterised by extremely hot and humid conditions. With peak day-time temperatures reaching well over 40°C. Although the average day-time summer temperatures reach approximately 32°C. Paired with very high humidity levels.

Besides high rainfall and hot and humid park conditions, one of the Kruger National Park’s summer season highlights is the fact that the park is filled with newborns. Which is undoubtedly one of the wet season’s main attractions. The summer months are therefore the best time for a Kruger Park safari if you are keen to see baby animals as most animals give birth at the start of the rainy season. Thereby significantly increasing your chances of spotting wildlife with their young. Making for an unforgettable Kruger Park Safari experience.

What can you expect when visiting the Kruger National Park during wet summer season

  • High levels of rainfall results in the surrounding scenery being green and lush. Transforming the Kruger National Park into a lush green paradise.
  • Wet season is the prime time for newborn & young summer-born wildlife sightings
  • The higher number of newborn animals present during this time of year means the Kruger Park also becomes a predator’s paradise. Thereby further enhancing your chances of spotting potential predators
  • Birding is excellent during the Kruger Park’s wet season as the summer migrant birds arrive
  • As the wet season is also known as the Kruger Park’s ‘Green Season’ (due to the high levels of rainfall) it’s a great time of year for photography
  • It’s the perfect time of year to visit some of the Kruger’s hidden gems and lesser known heritage sites, including rock art, stone ruins and comprehensive museums
  • February is the waterbuck birthing season, leading to increased encounters with these unique fluffy calves
  • March is the peak of the Greater kudu and Cape buffalo breeding season. Thereby creating increased excitement amongst the predators, lions in particular.
  • Summer in the Kruger National Park is not considered the prime time for wildlife sightings
  • Game viewing is more difficult during the Kruger Park’s wet summer season due to dense vegetation. Thereby making it much harder to spot and observe wildlife
  • Due to high levels of rainfall animals start to spread out as waterholes are filled again. They therefore no longer feel the need to congregate around water sources as they would during the Kruger’s dry winter season
  • Visitors to the Kruger will experience extremely hot and humid day-time temperatures with peak day-time temperatures reaching well over 40°C in extreme conditions
  • Summer is typically high/peak season in the Kruger Park (due to school holidays and the festive season) which means roads and camps will get extremely busy
  • The risk of malaria increases during the Kruger Park’s summer season. Although the risk of contracting malaria is still relatively low, the region does lie within the malarial belt. It is therefore advisable to take antimalarial medication or to consult a medical practitioner for advice about malaria if you plan to visit the Kruger Park during or just after summer.

When is The Best Time to Visit Kruger National Park?

If you're wondering when is the best time to visit Kruger National Park for that long-awaited holiday, you've come to the right place! As the World's Leading Safari Company, we know this safari mecca like a leopard knows its spots! Although South Africa is certainly a year-round destination, every season promises its own unique sights and experiences. Here's what to expect to give you an idea of when is the best time to visit Kruger National Park.

Nelspruit - Kruger National Park

Different seasons all bring unique scenery and experiences

The Different Kruger Seasons

Kruger National Park is a year-round destination and offers delightful experiences throughout the year. So, you really can't go wrong! However, t he best time to visit Kruger National Park depends on the type of safari experience you want. Of course, we recommend you don't stick to one season and return to get the best of all seasons!

Here is a breakdown of the seasons, their effects on the landscape and what you can look forward to in terms of wildlife and nature experiences.

December to March: The Emerald Summer Season

The Kruger National Park has a summer rainfall climate, which means hot, humid days yielding spectacular thunderstorms! The rainy season begins in November with a short lag time to full summer, which runs through to March.

During the height of the rainy season, rivers and streams are in full flood, and the vegetation is dense with moisture. Wildlife disperses into the thick greenery to have their little ones. While your guide and tracker may have a tougher time spotting animals, adorable young ones gambolling at the heel make the extra traversing time so worthwhile.

And summer has even more to offer. For example, colourful birdlife! Migrants double the species count in the national park to around 500. Lush landscapes and clear light also make for stunning photography. Don’t forget to charge your camera batteries!

Weather Conditions

You can expect hot, humid days that are often well above 30ºC (90ºF) with spectacular afternoon and evening thunderstorms.

  • Adorable newborn animals all around
  • The bush is beautifully lush and green
  • Migratory birds make their debut

Silvan Safari lodge is a Kruger National Park experience that will be spoken of for generations to come.

Summer in Kruger is a beautiful sight

April: Summer Turns into Autumn

April is an outlier month as rainfall decreases significantly, but the rivers and waterholes remain plentiful, while the bush is still dense. We’ve been on safari in Kruger during this month and had incredible wildlife sightings! You simply never know what waits behind the next bush.

Daytime temperatures ease off, trees are in full fruit and the rutting season begins.

April days are warm to hot and clear with few showers to interrupt your safari. Morning and evening temperatures are quite cool, especially in an open game viewing vehicle.

  • Wildlife starts to gather around dwindling water sources
  • Excellent birding during this time
  • Less rainfall means more pleasant safaris yet bush is still lush

Safari in Silvan

Autumn in the bush at Silvan Safari

May to August: Dry Winter

Winter in Kruger is a dry, azure-skied affair best suited for finding wildlife in the greatly diminished bush. With no rain, warm days and low malaria risk, winter is therefore also generally acknowledged as the best time to visit Kruger National Park for successful Big 5 game viewing. By mid-winter, the landscape is entirely parched, making it easier to see animals through the thinned out vegetation. Wildlife concentrates around the few remaining permanent water sources and perennial rivers, which means you get more frequent and varied sightings on your game drives.

You can expect cold nights and mornings, with warm, clear days and no humidity or rainfall.

  • Widely considered prime Big 5 safari season
  • Bush is sparse, making wildlife sightings excellent
  • Best time for walking safaris and wildlife photography from hides

September to November: Spring into Summer

The tail end of spring sees a dramatic increase in daytime temperatures. And as a result of the long dry winter, game viewing is excellent! Just head to any water source, and you’ll see many very thirsty animals.

The first rains take the edge off the heat and usually arrive in October, along with the first of the migrant birds. November is noticeably wetter than October, heralding signs of summer’s lush return, including much-anticipated fresh grazing and water supplies. Vegetation is still on the thin side, therefore making for excellent game viewing despite the rising heat and humidity readings.

With many calving antelope, thin vegetation and scarce water, spring is therefore an excellent time to see predators and kills. These spring months can be unpredictable, but with so much action, they are often recommended as the second best time to visit Kruger National Park.

Mornings are still cool with hot days above 30ºC (86ºF) and occasional thunderstorms.

  • Migratory birds are back in the Kruger area
  • Calving season begins, with new life emerging around every corner
  • Prime predator sightings and kills

So, When is the Best Time to Visit Kruger?

As you can see, Kruger offers a fantastic safari experience no matter when you visit. But for the absolute best time to visit Kruger National Park, it’s a good idea first to define your safari expectations and then match these with the seasons described.

Best Time to Visit Kruger for Your First Safari

If this is your first African safari, you’ll want to see as much wildlife as possible and certainly big game like lions, elephants, rhinos, leopards, and giraffes.

In that case, winter and early spring are the best seasons for your Kruger safari.

Lions in Kruger National Park

Winter is a great time to see lions in Kruger National Park

Best Time for Something Different

On the other hand, if you’ve been on several safaris and favour a more adventurous experience over guaranteed sightings, then the summer and autumn months offer the most comfortable weather and spectacular African scenery.

Best Time for Families

For families concerned about weather and malaria but still wanting good game viewing, winter is the best time to visit Kruger National Park.

Best Time for Birders and Wildlife Photographers

Birders should aim for the beginning of summer. Furthermore, wildlife photographers will appreciate autumn's bounty, late spring and summer's brilliant clear light and scenery.

Best Time for a Multi-Destination Tour

If you'd like to take your African safari to the next level, adding destinations like  Botswana,   Cape Town  and  Victoria Falls  to your Kruger safari is the perfect combo tour. Because Kruger is a year-round destination, it pairs well with any destination, and you can maximise your peak times in these destinations.

For example, if you want to see the Victoria Falls in full flood, experience Cape Town's quieter season and see the Okavango Delta in Botswana in its prime, May is an excellent month to visit.

But don't worry, our Travel Experts can help you plan the best time for each destination according to what you want to see and do.

The showpiece of South African safari , Kruger National Park is one of the world’s most famous protected areas, and for good reason.

This huge (19,485 sq km) park in the far northeast of South Africa is home to tens of thousands of mammals and birds including large numbers of all your African favourites.

The scenery is classic Africa, with the diversity of safari activities the equal of anywhere and there are endless accommodation options and safari styles available, from tented camps to luxury lodges. The park is readily accessible and, thanks to an impressive road system, easy to travel around.

Here's my rundown on the best safaris in Kruger National Park.

Kruger's best safari reserves, lodges and camps

Thornybush Game Reserve

Thornybush Game Reserve

Best for: Luxury lodges and the Big Five

For many years, Thornybush was a fenced reserve which meant the management could guarantee the presence of many large mammals, but it also prevented the wildlife from moving freely between the reserve and Kruger itself. It also meant that the reserve lacked a little of the wilderness feel. The good news is that the fences have come down and, with its top-end lodges, acclaimed guides and a better than average chance of seeing cheetah (as well as many other flagship animals), Thornybush can now rightly hold its head up high as one of the best of the Kruger area’s private reserves.

Timbavati Game Reserve

Timbavati Game Reserve

Best for: The Big Five and photography

This magical private reserve borders the main Kruger park and, with no fences to block access, it hosts all the main mammal and bird species that Kruger is famed for. What really puts Timbavati on the map is its very rare population of naturally white lions. Lions with such a genetic mutation can only be found in one or two other places in Africa. In 2017, the last white lion in the region died. However, in March 2018, a cub was born with the pigmentation, meaning the legend lives on.

Timbavati is known for its high-quality guides, wide range of safari activities, and superb, high-end lodges with a heavy dose of romance.

Balule Nature Reserve

Balule Nature Reserve

Best for: The Big Five and luxury lodges

Sprawling across 250 sq km, the unfenced Balule Nature Reserve sits on the edge of the greater Kruger ecosystem with the Drakensberg escarpment as a memorable backdrop. The reserve is home to the Big Five as well as large numbers of hippo. There is also excellent birding with more than 260 recorded species including hobby falcon and harlequin doves. There are several quality lodges in different price ranges and activities include guided game drives and walking safaris, fishing, wine tasting and visits to a wildlife rehabilitation centre.

Kapama Game Reserve

Kapama Game Reserve

Best for: Family friendly holidays and birdwatching

Kapama makes for a good first-time safari destination in the greater Kruger region. A few years ago, the fences that had for so long separated it from Kruger and the surrounding (unfenced) private reserves were taken down. This has done a lot to increase the wilderness feel of the place. There is a good range of safari activities on offer and it’s child-friendly (as child-friendly as anywhere with wild lions can be). One unique feature of a safari here is the reserve’s elephant experience. The reserve has a number of elephants (rescued from elephant-back safaris) and the elephant interaction experience allows you to get close to these not-so gentle giants while a guide explains elephant biology and conservation.

Manyeleti Game Reserve

Manyeleti Game Reserve

Best for: The Big Five and family friendly safari

Covering 230 sq km and with an unfenced border with Kruger, Manyeleti, which means Place of the Stars in the local Shangaan language, was the only wildlife reserve that black people were permitted to visit during the apartheid era. Today it welcomes everyone, yet retains an exclusive atmosphere thanks to having only four excellent lodges and camps with accommodation suitable for budget, mid-range and luxury travellers. The reserve hosts all the so-called Big Five and a whole range of Kruger’s other stars.

Klaserie Nature Reserve

Klaserie Nature Reserve

Best for: Luxury lodges and photography

Covering some 60,000 hectares, the spectacular Klaserie Nature Reserve is one of the largest privately-owned nature reserves in South Africa. The reserve is also deeply committed to environmental education for local children and supports a number of long-term scientific studies. For the tourist, Klaserie combines memorably diverse scenery, including glittering waterways, and an impressive range of wildlife such as rhinos, elephants, lions, hippos and some massive buffalo. The birdlife is equally impressive and one of the scientific projects the reserve supports focuses on the prehistoric-looking ground hornbill. There’s a wide selection of accommodation within Klaserie, all of it very luxurious and intimate in scale, and the sheer size of the reserve means that Klaserie never feels busy — except with wildlife.

Karongwe Game Reserve

Karongwe Game Reserve

Best for: Birdwatching and the Big Five

Known for offering some of the highest chances of spotting the elusive leopard, Karongwe is a moderately-sized private game reserve hemmed in between four rivers with views of the Drakensberg Mountains. This gives it an unusually lush, green landscape, in contrast to some of Kruger’s drier regions. Other highlights are the superb guided bush walks and exceptional birdwatching (again, thank those rivers). Since there are just five unashamedly luxurious and very small camps, crowds are never an issue here and the quality of the guiding and accommodation is almost unsurpassed in the Kruger area.

Safari in Kruger National Park: Need to know

Everything you wish you'd known before you booked.

This is safari made easy — perhaps too easy. A park as good and easy to visit as Kruger attracts a lot of visitors and in high season main routes can be busy. The park’s highly-developed infrastructure also means that it doesn’t always feel all that wild. If this sounds off-putting, fear not.

The park is surrounded by a number of superb private reserves with limited numbers and no self-drives allowed, which means that wild Africa comes growling right up to you. Taking all this into account, whatever sort of safari you’re looking for, Kruger usually comes out on top.

Where to go in Kruger National Park

There’s a massive amount of accommodation in and around Kruger National Park. The park itself caters to all budgets, from hardcore bush campers to lodges with a luxury royal seal (and a price tag to match). In general, the finest accommodation and best safari guides can be found in the exclusive private reserves bordering Kruger itself. The prices quoted by such places might appear steep but keep in mind that they generally include all activities including guided safaris in state-of-the-art vehicles, meals and most drinks, plus the conservation fees that help maintain such wilderness areas.

Some suggested top-end places include Singita Lebombo Lodge and the Rzoyal Malewane, both of which are in the Kruger National Park itself. You can’t really go wrong with any of the accommodation in the private reserves but some worth building your safari around include Thornybush Waterside Lodge in the Thornybush Game Reserve, Kapama River Lodge in the Kapama Game Reserve, and the Klaserie Sands River Camp and Makumu Private Game Lodge, both in Klaserie.

Safari by foot

For the ultimate in Kruger adventures, try a short bush walk led by an expert walking safari guide in one of the private reserves or, for something even more thrilling, set out to hike one of the multi-day wilderness trails established by park authorities. There’s no better way to get to know wild Africa than by walking, which gives you the ability to touch, smell, taste, hear and sense the African bush in a way that’s never possible in a vehicle safari.

Kruger wildlife

One of the great parks of Africa, Kruger and the surrounding private reserves are home to all of southern Africa’s iconic mammal species including the famed Big Five — buffalo, elephant, lion, leopard and rhino. This is also a great park for giraffe, zebra, cheetah and even wild dogs. The sheer quantity of animals seen on a safari trip here can be mind-boggling.

There are tens of thousands of impala and blue wildebeest and, despite sustained recent poaching, there are still thousands of white rhino (plus some black rhino). The lion population is somewhere around thousand and elephants are doing exceptionally well, with some 13,000 present (which is about double the park’s real carrying capacity). In total, some 140 mammal species are known to live in and around the Kruger eco-systems, which makes it one of the most mammal-rich parks in the world.

The diverse habitats, which include thorn tree woodlands and shrub mopane veld, river valleys lined by tropical forest and searing granite kopjes (hills), supports an even more impressive array of birdlife. More than 500 different species of birds have been recorded in Kruger.

Kruger's hidden gems

Anthony Ham

Anthony Ham

Kruger may be busy, but it’s so big that you can still spend time alone with a lone leopard wandering along a quiet riverside track. As a general rule, I enjoy Kruger the further north I go: in the wild north, I’d happily live out my safari days looking for birds and lions that still seem surprised to see a vehicle.

When to visit Kruger National Park

Key wildlife viewing times are between June and September when the drier winter weather causes animals to congregate around water sources, and the March to May rutting season when male wildebeest, impala and other antelope butt heads over the ladies. Overall, June is probably the best month to visit. Wildlife activity is intense, but with school holidays yet to begin, human activity remains light and accommodation is cheaper.

Kruger safari FAQs

Your questions, our expert answers, can you recommend any mid-luxury accommodation in kruger we don't need top luxury but happy to splurge a bit..

Most of the accommodation actually within Kruger National Park is run by the park authorities - great locations, but the accommodations are fairly basic and very busy. If you want to splash out, this is probably not what you're looking for.

Consider instead one of the private reserves (conservancies) that sit alongside Kruger - they have much the same wildlife, but way more choice when it comes to accommodation, and fewer visitors and vehicles. I've always enjoyed Timbavati Nature Reserve and Shindzela - I saw all the big five in one afternoon here!

Wild Wings Safaris

Kruger safaris september 2021 highlights.

Wild Wings Safaris guests were treated to some wonderful springtime wildlife sightings in September this year. From a dismissive honey badger to a lion cub tempting his younger sibling back into the safety of the long grass, South Africa's Kruger National Park did not disappoint.

We spotted loads of different types of game gathering at waterholes, were presented with the impressive sight of the famous leopard known as the Lubye-Lubye male, enjoyed spectacular sunsets and saw our fair share of new life, from baby baboons and hyena cubs to elephant calves. Scroll down to see some of our top Kruger safari moments from September 2021.

We returned to this hyena den throughout the month of September. Each time, there was something else to see, from a cuddle huddle one cold morning ...

... to an inquisitive hyena doing some exploring of its own later that week.

A tower of giraffes.

A honey badger throws us one final look over its shoulder before scuttling off into the bush.

This was our best leopard sighting of the game drive. It pounced unexpectedly on a warthog leaving a culvert ...

... and carried its bounty across the road right in front of our safari vehicle.

Elephants leaving a waterhole after drinking their fill.

Mating lions.

A vervet monkey getting ready to leap.

This grey heron used the back of a hippo as a convenient fishing platform and lookout point.

This sighting of an unusually striped zebra fascinated our guests.

This lion cub left the safety of the long grass for the open road as soon as its mother had left to go hunting but ...

... big brother enticed it back into the bush with the promise of play.

Caught in the act! A striated heron with a Müller's platanna.

An elephant calf takes a dip.

A beautiful September Kruger sunset.

Much to the delight of our guests, we spotted a pack of African wild dogs on the final morning of one of our September safaris. Now that's a nice Kruger farewell!

Springtime in Kruger brings new life. Here, a baby baboon sits in its mother's arms.

More new life! A young dwarf mongoose.

A young lion feasting on a buffalo.

The massive Lubye-Lubye male leopard on the prowl.

The African finfoot is a secretive and elusive bird so we were very lucky to spot this finfoot on one of our game drives.

We regularly post updates of our Kruger safari sightings and share footage of our favourite wildlife sightings on our Facebook page. You'll find more images and videos of our September 2021 safari sightings there.

Kruger safaris august 2021 highlights.

August is the month African wild dog pups make their first appearance after the winter denning season, but the chances of spotting pups are slim. This year, we discovered a den site and were able to spend a great deal of time watching the wild dog pups explore their surroundings. And August had even more surprises for us in store ...

Kruger Safaris July 2021 Highlights

What does the South African version of a winter wonderland look like? For us, it's Kruger National Park in July. As the winter season wears on, more and more animals gather at rivers and waterholes to drink. Lion and hyena cubs, hippo, elephant, buffalo and rhino calves and a honey badger on a night raid count amongst our favourite sightings from our July 2021 Kruger safaris.

Kruger Safaris June 2021 Highlights

Winter is generally one of the best times to go on safari in Kruger. And this year was no exception! The days were sunny and warm, the dry bush made it easy to spot game and the wildlife was prolific. Big Five, wild dog, cheetah and lion cub sightings were just some of the highlights from our June 2021 Kruger safaris.

We've partnered with the best to ensure you get front row seats at the best possible price., frequently asked questions.

We've taken the liberty to answer everything you may need to know about visiting Kruger National Park

Kruger is a year-round destination, but it remains seasonal. In other words, the  best time to visit the Kruger National Park for a safari  depends on your safari interests. Here's what you can expect to experience through the months of the year.

November to December:  The summer months are hot and humid with either continual rains or very typically afternoon thundershowers, which generally clear before the game drives depart. Many newborn animals are around, most notably the impala lambs, which are beautiful but vulnerable to predators.

January to March:  These usually are drier months with very hot days. If you're an avid birder, this is the time to see the beautiful migratory birds. Going on early morning drives with early returns to escape the heat is typical.

April:  The vegetation starts changing from a thick, lush green bush to a slightly sparser and browning bush during this autumn season. The temperature starts cooling down at night, but the daytime is still warm. There could be an occasional thunderstorm in the afternoon.

May to June:  You can expect cold temperatures at dawn and night during the winter months. Warm clothing is recommended, such as gloves, scarves, beanies and insulated jackets. The vegetation turns brown, and trees start losing leaves. Therefore, this sparser vegetation allows for better wildlife visibility during game drives. During this time, large herds of elephants are very mobile, increasing your chances of spotting them en route!

July to September:  Over these months, the bush is very dry. Evening and early mornings are chilly, so layer up for your game drives! Game viewing is fantastic due to excellent visibility, and the wildlife congregates around the scattered watering holes. One of the best moment for Kruger National Park safaris !

September to October:  Spring is at the height of the dry season, boasting hot, dry winds and colourless, sparse vegetation. Because the rivers and dams are low, you can see high concentrations of wildlife in these areas, making game viewing excellent. The first rain generally falls towards the end of October, and signs of spring and a new wet season are evident.

Whichever season you choose, our Rhino Africa Travel Experts will ensure you pick the  best time to visit Kruger National Park  according to your safari expectations.

The cost to visit Kruger National Park  can range anything from $500 to $2,500 per person per night, depending on service providers, availability, and seasonality.  We also have a selection of curated Kruger National Park tours, starting at $1700, but remember that all our tours can be tailor-made to suit your preferences.

In 2022, a day ticket for international travellers entering Kruger National Park costs anything from $28 per adult, per day and from $14 per child per day.

However, please note that the total cost to visit Kruger National Park depends on several factors, including but not limited to the duration of your trip, the type of accommodation, and the specific location within the reserve.

We always recommend that you stay at least three nights and choose one of the private concessions within the Greater Kruger National Park for a more exclusive Kruger National Park safari experience.

There are several ways of getting to Kruger National Park, each of which has a slightly different cost implication and levels of convenience to consider.

If you plan to travel from  Johannesburg to Kruger National Park , daily charter flights operate between Johannesburg OR Tambo International Airport and many of the private lodges in and surrounding the Kruger. A "lodge hop" in a small light aircraft to your lodge of choice is the easiest and most convenient way to travel to the safari destination. The flights take about 90 minutes and deliver you straight to the corresponding airstrip of the lodge you are travelling to. Luggage is, however, limited to 20kg in soft-sided bags on these flights.

Alternatively, you can touch down in Kruger Mpumalanga Airport, Hoedspruit or Skukuza Airport, where a road transfer, often a game drive in itself, will bring you to your final destination. Commercial flights from Johannesburg take one hour, Durban an hour and a half, and from  Cape Town to Kruger National Park , it's only just over two hours.

Self-driving to Kruger Park is feasible and enjoyable for those with more time. The gate is about a six-hour drive from Johannesburg, and the tarred road is well maintained, with clean service stations along the way. In fact, the Maputo Corridor means you will be travelling on a dual carriageway for most of the way. Fuel is never a problem in South Africa, and you won't get lost with Google Maps or Waze. Roads are also surprisingly well-signposted, and traffic density is generally low.

Based on your lodge of choice, time, and budget, our Travel Experts will gladly advise you on the  best way to get to Kruger National Park  or the surrounding reserves.

Where is Kruger National Park, and what is its history?  Kruger National Park stretches across the northeastern part of South Africa and was originally founded by Paul Kruger in 1898 and called the Sabi Game Reserve. In 1926, it was enlarged and made into a national park. In 2002 the Kruger National Park became part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park. This peace park links Kruger with the Gonarezhou National Park in Zimbabwe to the north and with the Limpopo National Park in Mozambique to the east.

The park is part of the Kruger to Canyons Biosphere, an area designated by the United Nations Education and Scientific Organisation (UNESCO) as an International Man and Biosphere Reserve (the "Biosphere").

Early History

Evidence of early humans is found in the area, dating back as early as 1,500,000 BC. The San people also existed in the area as far back as 100,000 BC. In 200 AD, while looking for more grazing land for their cattle, the first Nguni speaking people migrated south into the area and displaced the San.

By 800 AD, the Arabs started raiding the area for slaves, using the ports in Mozambique. A civilisation also sprang up in the northern regions of the park, and they built the Thulamela Stone Citadel, which was occupied between 1250-1700 AD. They also extracted iron ore from up to 200 mines, converting it into iron for trade.

The first known European to explore the now Kruger National park area was Francois de Cuiper, who led a Dutch East India Company expedition from the Cape Colony in 1725. However, the expedition was attacked by local tribes-people near Gomondwane and driven away.

Around 1838, Voortrekker expeditions led by Louis Trichardt and Hans van Rensburg explored the Lowveld, and later wagon routes were established to and from the Kruger area.

Gold was first discovered in September 1873 at Pilgrim's Rest and then in 1881 at Barberton. Fortune seekers rushed to the Lowveld. The prospect of finding gold banished all fear of lions, crocodiles, and malaria. This started the dramatic decline of wild animals in the region due to the hunting and trading of animal horns and skins.

The Park since the 20th Century

In 1912, a railway line was routed through the reserve. Stevenson-Hamilton (a British major who became the first warden of the Kruger National Park) successfully used this to get tourists to stop over for lunch. By 1916 a government commission was appointed to assess the future of the reserves. In 1926, as an act of reconciliation, the British administration officially renamed the reserve after Paul Kruger and declared it South Africa's first National Park.

In 1927, the park was opened to the public, who were charged a £1 fee. Only a handful of cars visited the new park that year, but in 1935 some 26,000 people passed through the gates. Today the number is around one million per year.

Here's a rough idea of  what you can expect on a Kruger National Park safari . Please note that this differs depending on where you stay and what time of year you visit.

05:00:  Wake up to get your day started!

05:30:  Coffee with your ranger and tracker before going on safari, most often on an open 4x4 vehicle.

09:30:  Start heading back to the lodge for a scrumptious breakfast.

11:00:  Depending on where you're staying at what time of the year, you can often embark on a bushwalk with an armed tracker. This gives you a chance to appreciate the smaller wonders of the bush.

13:00:  Enjoy your lunch and some leisure time.

16:00:  Meet for your afternoon game drive.

16:30:  Your evening game drive promises different sightings than the morning, with nocturnal animals coming out to play.

18:00:  Watch the incredible sunset while you drink a G&T.

18:30:  Using a spotlight, take a peek into the lives of your nocturnal creatures.

19:30:  Return and freshen up for dinner.

20:00:  Feast on dinner while your ranger tells you stories around the campfire.

Unfortunately, the Kruger National Park is not a malaria-free area. However, it is entirely possible to have a safe, malaria-free Kruger safari by using prophylactic drugs. Please note that we are not doctors, so you should always speak to your doctor about malaria prevention before travelling.

Here are our malaria prevention tips for your Kruger National Park safari :

1. Repel the Mosquitoes.  Always wear repellent as well as long-sleeved shirts and long trousers in the evenings and mornings. Please note that clothes alone won't protect you, as they can bite through the material. Most of our lodges will have screened windows and doors, air conditioning systems, and mosquito nets to further protect you. The female mosquito responsible for transmitting malaria is a silent mossy, so you will have to ensure you repel them. They can strike at any time of day but are most active at dusk as well as dawn.

2. ALWAYS Take Anti-Malaria Tablets.  The most important thing you can do to protect yourself against malaria is taking prophylactic tablets. Please note that you have to speak to your doctor before taking these tablets.

3. Keep an Eye Out for Symptoms and Finish Your Course of Meds.  If you start to notice any flu-like symptoms, you must get a malaria test to be safe and catch it early because malaria reacts well to early treatment. Also, don't stop taking your meds until the course is complete!

When wondering  what is the best way to visit Kruger National Park , we’ll always recommend to our guests that they opt for a private game reserve. So, what’s the difference and why a private game reserve?

Well, the public parks tend to be more crowded, and you could get stuck behind a convoy of other vehicles out on safari. This means that you might miss some animal sightings. There are also strict times when you’re allowed to be out on the roads in public areas, and you must stick to the main roads.

On the other hand, if you stay at one of the private game reserves sharing an unfenced border with the Kruger National Park, you have a more exclusive experience. The lodges within these private game reserves are also generally more luxurious. Because they have private land, you can go out on safari in open-air vehicles and go off-road to get a closer look at the wildlife. They also limit how many vehicles can be out at a time so that you have an uninterrupted view! Furthermore, there are no set times, and you can even head out on safari after dark!

You can also experience Kruger with all your senses by enjoying activities such as bushwalks, multi-day walking safaris, photo safaris, and more.

Part of the South Africa Safaris & Travel To South Africa & African Safari Collection

The Kruger National Park is undeniably the best game reserve in South Africa and one of the largest in Africa. It is easy to see why the Kruger National Park is consistently rated as one of the top safari destinations in Africa.

The enormous 20 000 km2 park is not only home to the famous Big Five (elephant, rhino, cape buffalo, lion and leopard) but it also boasts an incredibly diverse African savanna biome.

More than 140 species of mammal, including oddities such as the shy aardvark and the fierce honey badger, call it their home while over 300 species of trees stand proudly scattered across the landscape..

Travel and accommodation in Kruger is ample, no matter your safari budget .

So what should you pack for your Kruger safari? Take a look at some of the essentials:

1. Pack the right clothing

Pack accordingly and avoid noticeable colours. White clothing will get dirty easily in dusty dry areas.  Free-flowing, comfortable gear is always preferred. Be prepared for thunderstorms and some rain, particularly during the green season between November and February.

Weather in the Kruger National Park is usually warm by day and cold at night- a warm jacket is a good idea. Pack lightly, some fly-in transfers only allow baggage of a certain weight on the aricraft.

2. No need for hiking boots

There is little reason to carry heavy duty hiking boots. Normal closed sneakers or trainers will be sufficient, this will help in packing light and getting the most out of the experience by feeling comfortable.

However, if you’re planning on exploring any hiking trails in South Africa, or any active adventures, then it’s a good idea to bring appropriate boots.

3. Sunscreen and sunglasses

South Africa has many days of sunshine yearly, even in winter, so make sure you pack sunscreen and take a pair of sunglasses as the sun can be extremely harsh.

4. Pack a book

There will be some downtime in-between long game drives and majestic walks through rolling fields so pack a book or some reading material. Or alternatively, get familiar with the bird species you can look forward to seeing on birding tours  by purchasing a birding book at any bookstore or fuel station.

5. Take all necessary medication and toiletries

A first-hand kit, soap and shampoo and certain daily items won’t be obtainable in certain areas of the Kruger National Park.

Malaria is a concern in the summer months so take all precautions and pack some repellent. Alternatively, try a malaria-free safari in South Africa , particularly if you’re travelling with children. It can also become very dusty in winter, anti-allergy or sinus medication could also come in handy.

6. Carry lighter sized binoculars

Binoculars are essential in the Kruger National Park; however packing light ensures a more enjoyable experience. Larger size binoculars can become hard to carry so it’s advised to take a lighter sized pair (8 X 35 or 8 X 40).

Photographic tours can be arranged with your travel agent.

7. Draw money at Skukuza base camp or in a city nearby before you leave

There is only one bank in the Kruger National Park at Skukuza base camp, so it’s advised to draw money before you leave. Many of the restaurants may or may not have card facilities, so this is important.

Certain items will be cash only so make sure you have sufficient spending money. Tipping in South Africa is the norm and is a best done in cash should you feel that your service has exeeded expectations.

8. Camera equipment

No trip to the Kruger National Park is complete without a camera to capture those breathtaking moments. However out in the wild camera shops will become a scarce commodity, so pack an extra smaller camera if possible with all the necessities such as spare batteries and lenses.

Photographic tours  can be arranged with your travel agent.

What to Pack on a Safari to Kruger Park

safari in kruger in september

Is it your first time going on safari in South Africa? Are you unsure what to pack? This is our guide to what you need for a safari in the Kruger National Park.

There are many lists out there telling travellers what to pack, and yet many travellers still get it wrong. Over packing is also a big problem. International flights have a high luggage allowance, but on many of the smaller planes and safari vehicles the amount of luggage you can bring is limited, and you can end up paying a lot of money for being overweight.

What to wear on safari?

Light, cotton clothing in light tones

For the ladies, long sleeved shirt and trousers:, a lightweight waterproof jacket, a good pair of trainers or hiking shoes, a wide brimmed hat.

Choose a sunscreen with a high SPF or sun protection factor of between 30 and 50. Do not underestimate the power of the African sunshine - the last thing you want on holiday is a bad sunburn or sunstroke.

A camera, charger and spare memory cards

A light weight flashlight, medical kit, anti-malarial, a good book, help and faq on travelling to kruger park.

CAPE TOWN, KRUGER & VICTORIA FALLS ( Luxurious accommodation )

Embarking on the luxurious journey through Cape Town, Kruger National Park, and Victoria Falls with Little Roz Tours was an unparalleled experience that far exceeded our expectations. From the onset, the meticulous attention to detail and personalized service provided by Bronah, the owner, set the tone for a truly bespoke adventure. Bronah remained personally engaged throughout, ensuring our needs were met. We were fortunate to have a dedicated tour guide, whose expertise and gracious demeanor enriched our experience immeasurably. While the beauty of Cape Town & the wine tour captivated us, it was the private game reserve safari near Kruger National Park (Makalali) that stood as the pinnacle of our trip. Situated within a private reserve, we had the extraordinary opportunity to witness the majestic "Big Five" in their natural habitat, among a plethora of other wildlife, offering moments of awe that will be etched in our memories forever. The visit to Victoria Falls was nothing short of spectacular, compelling us to extend our stay to soak in more of the breathtaking surroundings. Really great tour, I chose a good time of the year(june) and so it felt like I had the place to myself. The kruger and surrounding game parks were all magic and the bundle lodge where I stayed was just an absolute pleasure. All the staff were so friendly and welcoming, it felt like a home away from home. And the food was better than most restaurants I have been to. Highly recommend this tour to anyone considering it.

It was an arranged tour by Intrepid together with their lodge/private reserve partners. As for me, I stayed at Bondux lodge and I has a great experience. The staff were friendly and well informed. The accommodation is great, meals and optional activities. I enjoyed chilling at the deack and watching the animals come. Also, the optional activity that I took was Endangered Animals Reserve and Blyde Canyon boat tour.

What people love about Kruger National Park Tours in September

Our guide was superlative. Our itinerary was superb. Our accommodation and food really satisfying and well beyond expectations. It was a great trip and I'd do it again at my first opportunity. And I'll recommend to far and wide!
I did the 9 day Kruger and Coast tour. It was absolutely amazing. I didn’t expect to eat such fantastic and varied vegetarian dishes, but our guide Chad was a fantastic chef. I felt safe and reassured being with a local guide who knew the culture and people where we visited. The homestay and the game drives were definite highlights. It’s worth noting that the days are very long- early mornings most days and long drives to get to the next location. Absolutely everyone expects tips along the way so be sure to bring a lot of extra money, this cost much more than I had anticipated. Overall it was an incredible experience and I wouldn’t change a thing about it. Our driver, Vincent was also wonderful !

What To Wear On a Luxury Safari to Kruger National Park

Sharing is caring!

I was invited to visit Johannesburg, Kruger National Park, and Cape Town by South African Tourism, and when I found out I was going on a safari in Kruger National Park I immediately began researching clothes for a safari and what to pack for a safari.

After I read dozens of packing list articles on what to pack, what to bring, and what to leave at home I was still confused about what to wear to a safari.

I decided I needed to create a very detailed guide for what to pack for a safari depending on the season and time of year you visit South Africa.

Y’all know I had to be cute for those Instagram-worthy photos!

Deciding what to wear on safari really depends on the time of year and the weather.

The weather in Africa was nothing as I expected.  I was under the impression it was going to be hot but NO, it was freezing!

Freezing! Freezing!

South Africa gets extremely cold and thank Gawd I checked the weather app because I would have been up a creek.

This was my first time visiting the continent so I am not sure what I expected but it definitely was not frigid temps.  I will take the guesswork out of what you need to pack for this epic adventure.

The links in this post may be affiliate links.  That means that if you click them and make a purchase, this site makes a commission.  It will have no impact on the price you pay or the experience of your purchase.

I will cover what to wear on safari, what to bring on safari, what colors are appropriate for safari, as well as what you can probably leave behind at home.

Before you begin purchasing clothes for a safari you need to determine what time of the year you will be visiting Africa because that determines what you will need to pack.

Hopefully, I will answer all of your questions and this will be the only safari packing list you will need.  Take your time and go through each section as the article is long but extremely thorough.

When is the Best Time to Visit the Kruger National Park?

The best time to visit the Kruger National Park is the dry season from May to September for the best game viewing and walking safari conditions.

Vegetation is low and sparse at this time of year, making animals easier to spot and track, while the permanent water sources offer a rewarding safari experience in the Kruger.

Generally considered a year-round destination, choosing exactly when to go to the Kruger depends on what you want to experience.

Kruger has two distinct seasons, the dry winter from May to October, and the summer rainy season from November to April. However, every day in the Kruger National Park is a one-of-a-kind safari adventure.

May to September (Dry season)

High Season

December to January and July to August (Especially during school holidays)

April to mid-June and September to November (Except for the October school holiday)

Best Weather

April to May and September to October (Mild weather and little rain)

Worst Weather

June to August (Chilly mornings and nights) and December to February (Hot and humid)

Now that we have discussed the weather and you have determined what time of the year is best for you to go on a safari let’s get to discuss what you need to pack.

The 7 Safari Outfits you will Pack for your First Safari

There are plenty of options for what to wear on an African safari but I suggest sticking with primarily khaki or olive colors.

The safari tours in Kruger National Park are viewed from within the confines of an overland truck or 4×4 car.

You will be driving around the bush all day in an open jeep so be prepared to get covered in dust.

With that being said understand that shirts, pants and shoes, and whatever else you may be wearing will get dirty and dusty.

  • Note: It is illegal to wear Camouflage in Kruger National Park, so stick to your one-toned khaki clothing

P & G Recommended Safari Packing List

3 short-sleeve tops

2 long-sleeve tops

1 windbreaker jacket

1 fleece or warm jacket

2 bras

5 underwear

1 sunglasses

P & G Recommended Shoe List

1 pair of comfortable sneakers

1 Pair of hiking boots

1 pair sandals

Layers, Layers, and More Layers

As I said earlier if you are under the impression South Africa was warm all year round nothing could be farther from the truth. I realized this as soon as I landed in Johannesburg because it was chilly AF there and it only got colder as we traveled from Jo’Burg to Kruger National Park.

The temperatures dropped to a low of 30 degrees as soon as the sun started to set.

Game drives are timed for  when animals are most active . Typically, this means leaving your room for a 2-4 hour game drive beginning at sunrise.

I chose not to do the early morning game drive because I hate being cold and I am not a morning person.

Once you return from the morning game drive you will return to the room for lunch and relaxation, followed by another game drive late in the afternoon.

The temperatures will begin to cool off as soon as the sun sets – it goes from feeling relatively nice out to freezing within a matter of minutes which is why layers are essential to pack for a safari in Kruger National Park.

A good packing list for safari will include both short and long sleeve cotton shirts to wear during the day, warm sweaters, and a light jacket to wear in the early morning hours and in the evenings.

I also recommend bringing a scarf, a hat, and gloves.

Safari Color Guide

Do colors really matter?

Yes, Game-viewing should be done by blending in with your surroundings which will enhance your experience.

Watching wildlife behaving naturally is the best way to see Africa’s spectacular wildlife. The color of your clothing can potentially scare off or disturb your sighting – something you want to avoid.

The best safari color is khaki followed by olive, tans, and browns because they are good at handling dirt.

Remember to keep it casual and comfortable with tee shirts, long-sleeved shirts, shorts, hiking boots, and athletic socks to keep the blisters away.

What Colors you Shouldn’t Wear on Safari

While Black is my favorite color it is not appropriate for a safari because not only does it stand out in the bush i f you are traveling to an area with tsetse flies they are attracted to black and blue colors.

The last thing you want to do is attract this dreaded fly – an insect with a painful bite – so much so that fly traps are made from blue and black fabric.

With the amount of dust in the bush, white is hardly recommended as it gets dirty very easily therefore w hen on a game drive, you are expected to blend in with the bush as much as possible.

Wear neutral colors, such as khaki, beige, taupe, or grey.

Having considered what to wear on safari, here’s a selection of the clothes I recommend for your safari packing list.

1. Cotton Tee’s (Long & Short)

While nights are cold when in the bush, days are actually warm and you will often be wandering around in a t-shirt.

Don’t make the rookie mistake I made on my first safari and only pick t-shirts in neutral colors.

You will want something that is super lightweight that can be washed in the sink and will dry quickly.

Khaki pants

Long pants and long-sleeved tops will keep your skin covered and protect you from the cold and wind, sun, and insect bites.

While many places in Africa can get really hot, remember that some can also get downright chilly and t his is especially true for Kruger National Park.

Long pants are especially useful if you’re going on a walking safari or a game drive where you’re allowed to sometimes exit the vehicle

Even though it was chilly I still decided on short Khaki pants instead of long. I suggest safari shorts that are comfortable, durable, and weather-resistant, and the color of course blends in with the environment .

While many articles I read said don’t wear shorts I decided to take a chance and needless to say I did not get eaten alive by mosquitos or any of the bugs for that matter.

I did spray on a ton of perfume like I was the old dude at the club.

Safari Light sweaters & Layering

As I have stated 5 additional times earlier in this article it gets really cold in South Africa specifically Kruger National Park.

The climate and weather in Africa range from one extreme to another, from extremely cold freezing nights to very hot and dusty afternoons.

Layering is very convenient in these situations. Your layering should include at least one warm layer especially if you plan to go on early morning game drives.

A warm jacket

Multi-functional jackets with various pockets and neutral colors are what you need.

With these, you can safely carry your small safari accessories such as a camera, pair of binoculars, guide books, etc. safari jackets are especially needed on the game drives.

A Scarf, a Hat, and Gloves

I also suggest a wide-brimmed safari hat as it will protect you from the heat and shield your eyes from the glare of the sun and enables you to see animals at a distance.

You may need a chin strap to keep the hat firm on your head. It would even be much better if you got a waterproof hat, it would shield you from both the rain and the sunshine.

If you happen to be traveling during the cold season, from May to August, I suggest packing a set of thermals to put on under your safari clothes so you can stay warm.

I traveled to Kruger in September and it was still quite chilly (Freezing at night).

Comfortable Shoes & Boots for Safari

Footwear is an item that should not be overlooked when packing for your safari. Leave your cute shoes at home for your safari unless you want to be limping by the end of the day.

Once you leave the lodge you will need something comfortable to withstand the African terrain and will not leave your feet blistered.

Safari Socks

The importance of a good quality well fitting sock is imperative on an African safari. Your feet will take a lot of punishment so choose your socks carefully.

Nice Sandals

Once you return to your room you will want to relax and put your feet up so I highly suggest packing a nice pair of sandals that you can also wear to dinner.

Pack a swimsuit and some casual clothing for around camp.

Additional Items you will need:

Mosquito repellent .

I didn’t see or get bit by any mosquitoes in Kruger National Park but I did spray a ton of mosquito repellent, wore the armbands and I lathered on citronella oil for extra precautions.

Sun Screen

You will also want to protect your skin from sun damage so make sure you apply sunscreen generously.

For the same reasons, make sure to also protect your eyes with a good pair of sunglasses.

A power bank

You will need it to charge your smartphone on the go. Make sure to also bring a plug adaptor too.

Jabulani Safari Lodge provided binoculars for its guest so I didn’t even need to purchase any so make sure you check with the lodge before you purchase any to make sure you need them.

If the lodge you are staying at doesn’t provide binoculars you won’t want to miss any hunting scene or any bird watching, so binoculars are another essential item for your safari packing list.

Camera vs iPhone

A safari is a content creator’s dream.  I don’t think I have ever taken as many photos on any given day as I did during my safari trips.

I didn’t bring my big fancy camera but instead, I simply used my iPhone and my pictures look like they came out of National Geographic!

I just didn’t find it feasible to carry around a big camera when iPhone photos are equally as amazing. I have an iPhone 14 and the picture quality was excellent so if are eligible for an upgrade this is the time.

Toiletry bag

Last but not least is a toiletry bag because if you are anything like me I don’t leave home without my facial products so pick one that has multiple pockets and zips and that can be easily hung.

Documents you Must Pack

Losing documents is a very common occurrence, especially while traveling. As a result, packing the necessary documents safely should be your first priority before packing the rest of your luggage.

  • A passport that has all of the necessary visas for every nation that your safari will visit or pass through.
  • A small amount of cash, bank cards, and/or traveler’s checks are recommended. These days, you can also utilize e-wallet apps to avoid lugging around multiple credit cards and cash.
  • Air tickets and travel vouchers for any pre-arranged organized safaris that have been purchased.
  • Where necessary, vaccination certificates (yellow fever, mumps, etc.) will be provided. Some immunizations must be administered many weeks in advance (see Vaccinations needed for your African Safari).
  • Medical treatment may include malaria prevention medications (see Malaria Made Simple) as well as any personal medications (also take your prescription in case of an emergency-your medication gets lost, wet, eaten by a baboon, etc).
  • The specifics of your travel insurance policy Your policy number, as well as the contact information for claims and emergencies, will be provided.
  • Prepare a copy of all of your important documents, including your airline tickets, travel insurance policy, immunization records, and records of prescriptions and prescriptions.

Where to Stay in Kruger National Park

Jabulani safari lodge – a luxury resort.

Jabulani Safari lodge is just breathtaking, only a short drive away from Hoedspruit Airport and you are literally in the South African Bush!

The style and ambiance of Jabulani exude luxury with hints of home.  The main area features an elegant dining room and lounge that lead to an outside wooden deck lying beneath the shade of Leadwood trees.

This is where you will enjoy breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily while overlooking the waterhole.

The signature suspension bridge stretches gracefully over the river bed, connecting to the six Jabulani suites and Zindoga Villa which is how you will get to your room from the main area.

Camp Jabulani is a superbly luxurious safari getaway.  It’s all rich wood furniture, crystal glasses, and silver service. The meals are feasts, the wines are fine, the lounge area has wireless internet, and the bushveld views from the wooden deck.

 THE ROOM AT JABULANI:

This luxury South African Safari lodge has  six suites which are secluded, with canvas walls that roll up to reveal the surrounding wilderness.

Each suite is air-conditioned and has a lounge area and fireplace for cold nights, an en-suite bathroom with a stone tub and glass-walled outdoor shower, and a plunge pool.

The beds are huge, with pure cotton sheets and draped mosquito nets. The larger Zindoga Villa which is the villa I stayed in has two individual suites linked by a lounge and serviced by a private chef, butler, and game ranger.

I have never walked into a building or room and been speechless until I walked into our suite. There were elephant towels on the bed and the attention to detail is just outstanding, even down to the little natural leaf-cut elephants on the flannels.

The view from our room overlooked the reserve where you could see animals walking past. Check out the full-length video of our room on my IG reel.

  • Kapama Private Game Reserve supports a wide variety of wildlife
  • Plenty of activities including game drives, guided walks, and spa therapy

DO YOU NEED TRAVEL INSURANCE?

I think most people have questions about where to go for medical care in an emergency. First, I should note that if you’re on spring break, chances are slim that you’ll be needing emergency care.

Still, better safe than sorry!

I can’t say this enough but please get insurance when traveling to South Africa! Even if you are only going on a short trip, you should always travel with insurance.

Have fun while visiting South Africa ,   but take it from someone who has racked up thousands of bucks on an insurance claim before, you need it.

Make sure to get your insurance before you head off on an adventure!  I highly recommend  Travelex Insurance.
