Pearl Jam is hitting the road this year, and the band hopes fans can come along without breaking the bank.

On Thursday, the rock group announced its 2023 U.S. tour, commencing at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn., on Aug. 31. Pearl Jam said it is taking action to “continue to protect fans’ access to fairly priced tickets.”

The Grammy-winning group — comprised of Jeff Ament, Matt Cameron, Stone Gossard, Mike McCready and Eddie Vedder — opted to “make tickets non-transferable where permitted” and will sell “approximately 10% of tickets through PJ Premium at the market rate to offset increased costs.”

How Ticketmaster became the most hated name in music

Fans, politicians and even artists were complaining about Ticketmaster long before Taylor Swift filled stadiums. But experts say the anger may be misplaced.

The announcement continued: “Tickets on this tour will continue to be non-transferable in all states except Illinois where it is prohibited by law. We apologize in advance to Illinois fans who may be subject to increased ticket prices on the secondary market.”

Nontransferable tickets make it less likely that buyers can flip their tickets for a profit by selling to third-party sites and scalpers.

Fans can register for Ticketmaster ‘s Verified Fan program before tickets go on sale on April 28 at 10 a.m. local time. Current Pearl Jam Ten Club members have access to the ticket presale.

Additionally, the band said it will implement “all-in pricing across this tour” in its ticket sales. This means that prices listed on Ticketmaster will include all processing fees “so there are no surprises at check out.”

In a statement shared with The Times Friday, Ticketmaster said it supports Pearl Jam’s efforts to be more transparent about ticket prices.

“Pearl Jam has always advocated on behalf of their fans and we hope more artists, teams and venues follow their lead and start using the all-in pricing display available on Ticketmaster,” Ticketmaster said. “It would be better for fans if all-in pricing was mandated nationally, but in the meantime we created the all-in display option to help fans see the full costs upfront.”

A ticketing practice known as ‘dynamic pricing’ caused some serious sticker shock for fans hoping to see the Boss on his 2023 tour.

July 29, 2022

Pearl Jam’s latest efforts to be transparent with its ticket sales and limit reselling come months after music fans took Ticketmaster to court.

In December 2022, Taylor Swift fans filed a lawsuit against Ticketmaster’s parent company, Live Nation Entertainment Inc., for alleged fraud, price-fixing and antitrust law violations while selling advance tickets to Swift’s Eras Tour.

An investigation by the Department of Justice and a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing rife with Swift lyrics followed a month later.

In March, fans of rapper Drake reportedly filed a lawsuit against Ticketmaster, accusing the platform of inflating ticket prices.

Pearl Jam has had its own issues with Ticketmaster. The quintet clashed with the platform several times over ticket fees in the 1990s.

As part of its U.S. tour, Pearl Jam will make stops in Chicago, Indianapolis and Fort Worth and Austin, Texas. Rock band Inhaler will join Pearl Jam for its shows in Chicago, Indianapolis and Austin.

“We can’t wait to see you out there,” the band wrote.

Pearl Jam

Pearl Jam has announced a short tour for late summer and early fall of 2023, playing nine arena shows in five cities in August and September. Perhaps not surprisingly with a group long known for its careful attention to ticket practices, the explanation of how the band will be handling the ticket sales runs much longer than the actual list of tour dates. (See the full list of shows below.)

Popular on Variety

The announcement about the tour dates had Pearl Jam staking its position on other controversial ticketing practices, as well. The use of “platinum” — i.e., dynamically priced — tickets came to the forefront after some of Bruce Springsteen’s 2023 tickets reached astronomical face-value heights, and Taylor Swift rejected the use of platinum pricing on her own tour. Pearl Jam is using the platinum system — here called “PJ Premium” seats — but the announcement emphasizes that only 10% of tickets will be part of that program, and that these tickets help subsidize lower prices for the other 90%.

To avoid scalping, tickets will also be non-transferable, as well, except in Illinois. The band said that the majority of tickets will end up in the hands of members of its Ten Club fan club via a presale.

The pre-sale begins today for members of the Ten Club. A subsequent sale to those who sign up for Ticketmaster’s Verified Fan program will begin April 28. Advanced registration for Verified Fan begins today.

“Pearl Jam continues to try to protect fans’ access to fairly priced tickets by providing the majority of tickets to Ten Club members, making tickets non-transferable where permitted, and by selling PJ Premium tickets,” read the statement. “PJ Premium seats are located in a variety of preferred locations and account for approximately 10% of ticket inventory per show. They are priced at market rate to offset increased touring costs while also keeping prices low for the rest of the ticket inventory. PJ Premium tickets will be available through Verified Fan along with regularly priced tickets.”

The announcement added: “Tickets on this tour will continue to be non-transferable in all states except Illinois where it is prohibited by law. We apologize in advance to Illinois fans who may be subject to increased ticket prices on the secondary market.” And: “Pearl Jam will use all-in pricing across this tour for the first time. This means the ticket price listed is the full out-of-pocket price inclusive of fees so there are no surprises at checkout.”

Pearl Jam has announced a slew of new 2023 US tour dates, which will kick off in Minneapolis in August.

It will be joined by special guests Inhaler as support for the dates in Chicago, Indianapolis, and Austin, with the opening act for the other shows to be announced in the coming weeks.

Pearl Jam Promise ‘Fairly Priced Tickets’ for Summer Tour Amid Ticketmaster Controversies

By Kory Grow

Pearl Jam , a band whose animosity toward Ticketmaster is well documented , are committing themselves to “fairly priced tickets,” according to an official missive , as they roll out a short run of summer tour dates. The trek kicks off at the end of August and visits St. Paul, Chicago, Indianapolis, Ft. Worth, and Austin.

“Pearl Jam has decided to make tickets non-transferable where permitted, and by selling approximately 10% of tickets through PJ Premium at the market rate to offset increased costs,” the band wrote. “Tickets on this tour will continue to be non-transferable in all states except Illinois where it is prohibited by law. We apologize in advance to Illinois fans who may be subject to increased ticket prices on the secondary market.”

“Pearl Jam has always advocated on behalf of their fans and we hope even more artists, teams and venues follow their lead and start using the all-in pricing display available on Ticketmaster ,” a Ticketmaster spokesperson tells Rolling Stone . “It would be even better for fans if all-in pricing was mandated nationally, but in the meantime we created the all-in display option to help fans see the full costs upfront.”

Tickets will be available via Ticketmaster’s “Verified Fan” program on April 28 at 10 a.m. local time. Fans wanting verification have until April 25 at 5 p.m. PT to register. Active members of the band’s Ten Club can buy tickets starting today.

Pearl Jam, who also once filed a legal memorandum against the company, performed a short run of concerts late last year, including a stop at New York City’s famous Apollo Theater, sponsored by Sirius XM. After a technical error for a break, “The show eventually got back on track with a blistering ‘Who Ever Said’ from  Gigaton , and then they finally appeased the old school fans with a long, jammed-out ‘Even Flow,'” according to a Rolling Stone review . “It was followed by an incredible run that included ‘Dance of the Clairvoyants,’ ‘Quick Escape,’ ‘Whipping,’ and ‘Spin the Black Circle.’ The latter song was dedicated to Howard Stern and his crew.”

NME  gave ‘Dark Matter’  a glowing four-star review , and praised it as “some of their strongest work in recent memory”.

“For those longing for the charismatic songwriting that first put the band on the map over three decades ago, ‘Dark Matter’ will come as a pleasant surprise,” it read. “Not only does it showcase Pearl Jam reclaiming the charm that first made them a force to be reckoned with back in 1991, it comes alongside some of their most impressive musicianship yet, as well as a determination to take risks after years of playing it safe.”

Eddie Vedder recently said that  he thinks the band have “one or two” good records left in them  after ‘Dark Matter’.

“The older you get the better you are at living in the present,” he said. “The understanding you have less time is the biggest number in the quotient. The goal is to keep making music.”

The band’s drummer Matt Cameron has also been speaking about the time that he received a cease-and-desist letter from KISS as a teenager .

Pearl Jam Launches 2024 Tour: Set List, Video

Pearl Jam kicked off their 2024 global tour on Saturday night in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The evening’s set list included classics like “Daughter,” “Alive” and “Yellow Ledbetter,” plus selections from the band’s recently released album, Dark Matter . There was also a jarring moment in which guitarist Mike McCready fell off the stage during his solo in “Porch,” though he appeared to be alright.

You can view fan-filmed footage from the concert, as well as a complete set list, below.

READ MORE: Underrated Pearl Jam: The Most Overlooked Song From Each Album

Dark Matter was produced by Andrew Watt, who Eddie Vedder recently described as the “perfect producer” for Pearl Jam.

“His style is he has got a guitar on the whole time you’re playing with him, he’s playing with you, he’s playing with the band. We’ve never done anything like that before,” Vedder explained to Apple Music’s Zane Lowe. “He actually can fit in a way that it sounds right, and that’s just how he produces. He plays along. He’s got to feel the music in the way that the band does.”

Where Does Pearl Jam Head Next?

Pearl Jam will play a second show at the same venue in Vancouver, before traveling south to the U.S. They’ll perform in cities like Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Seattle and then take the tour overseas to the U.K., Germany, Spain and Portugal. The band will return to the States in August, hitting east coast locations like Chicago, New York City, Philadelphia and more, and finally fly to New Zealand and Australia for September shows.

Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder and Jeff Ament Give Taylor Swift 'Huge Props': 'She’s Incredibly Prolific'

"She's not afraid to change and change in a way that maybe is kind of anti-pop in some ways," said Ament

pearl jam summer tour

Taylor Swift just received praise from '90s rock royalty!

Pearl Jam may not have much in common sonically with Swift, 34, but in the May 3 episode of Bill Simmons’ self-titled podcast, bassist Jeff Ament and vocalist Eddie Vedder praised her artistry, and gave their two cents about the pop star’s music and meteoric rise to fame.

Vedder, who attended Swift’s Eras Tour with wife Jill and daughters Olivia and Harper last summer, lauded the intricacies of the star's performances and the relationship she holds with her fans — his daughters included.

“She's an artist who's respectful of her audience and I know from my daughter that she's really kind of incredible at planting these little … hidden codes that they can pick up,” said the Pearl Jam frontman. “And then all of a sudden, it activates all those people that are listening, and has them involved in it.”

“I think it's done in a very creative way — she changes it up and there's talk about what she played that night,” he added.

And, Vedder added, the “other thing that she has working so well for her” is the amount of music Swift is able to release.

“She's incredibly prolific,” he said of the star. “So she’s able to just keep putting out music and putting out music.”

Vedder also shared that his current favorite Swift track is a bit of a deep-cut, though he didn’t reveal its name.

“And I mean, my daughter's turned me onto this one B-side that I just think is incredible,” he said on the podcast. “it's just an incredible song."

Pearl Jam, Eddie Vedder, Mike McCready, Jeff Ament, Stone Gossard, Dave Abbruzzese, Pinkpop Festival, Landgraaf, Holland, 08/06/1992.

Ament also hopped on the Swiftie train, jumping in to praise the singer’s artistry, from who she chooses to collaborate with to her ability to reinvent her sound throughout her nearly two-decades-long career.

“And I think her producer choices too,” the bassist said, before revealing that he most enjoys Swift’s sound on folklore and evermore .

“A couple records ago, choosing to work with the Aaron Dessner guy from The National and Bon Iver — like those songs to me are the most interesting songs,” Ament said, “because I think that palette I like.”

He continued, “She's not afraid to change and change in a way that maybe is kind of anti-pop in some ways, you know, which is … I have huge props for that.”

Ament also recalled a “kind of not great” review of Swift’s music he recently read, but said it makes sense she’s receiving that kind of attention at this stage of her career.

John Medina/Getty

“She's in a place that maybe two or three other artists or musical people have ever been in. I mean, it's nuts,” said the bassist. “So, it makes sense that there's a backlash, I mean … how do you even level that off?"

"She's a really good person,” Vedder added. “And I also hear that she handles stress really well, so that'll come in handy.”

Vedder’s appearance on Simmons’ podcast was not the first time he's spoken about the uniqueness of Swift's fanbase and sense of community she and her music have fostered.

In a March interview with Mojo , the “Alive” singer recalled the “run-up” to the concert with one of his daughters, and specifically the Eras Tour tradition of making friendship bracelets .

“The generosity of these young girls and boys, trading these bracelets with different messages on them — lyrics, song titles, just acts of goodwill on these little bracelets. They had found their tribe,” he told the outlet, adding, “they were all agreeing on something.”

He went on to say that the “craziest thing” about the experience “was it reminded me of punk rock crowds, of being aligned with all of the misfits in our town, back in the day.”

“It was galvanizing and powerful,” he added.
