How to Pack Your Ironman Bags: A Complete Checklist

One ironman. three sports. five bags. we break it down..

For many first-time Ironman competitors, the logistics of the day can be confusing and even overwhelming – in order to cover 140.6 miles, a lot of gear is needed. But unlike shorter races, which usually allow you to stash your stuff on a towel under your bike rack, Ironman races don’t typically allow athletes to store their gear in transition. Instead, they distribute Ironman bags: five in total, each of which are marked with your race number. These Ironman bags are distributed at specific times and locations during the race, making for an orderly and safe transition area.

But packing these bags is anything but orderly. It’s enough to make an athlete’s head spin: Should this go in the bike bag or the run bag? What the heck do I put in my special needs bag? Will I really need this item? But fear not – the key to successful Ironman bag packing is to use a checklist, which will ensure you’ve got everything you need, exactly when you need it.

Ironman Bag 1: Dry Clothes

This Ironman bag will carry all items you need for the morning of the race ; at many Ironman races, it’s the only bag not required to be dropped off the day before the race at bike check-in. In it, place any items you will need to prepare your bike on race morning, as well as anything you will wear or use during the swim portion of the race.

Tri kit (if wearing for swim portion of race) or swimsuit Warm race-morning clothes Sandals or shoes for pre-race ( not the shoes you will wear on the run) Timing chip

Wetsuit or swimskin (if needed) Swim cap provided by race 2 pairs of goggles (Main pair and backup pair) Earplugs, nose clip (if needed)

Anti-chafe stick or cream Chamois cream (if applying before race)

GPS watch, fully charged Bike computer, fully charged Bottles and/or bento-box fuel, if not left on bike overnight

DON’T pack:

A bike pump – in addition to those provided by the race mechanics, many athletes bring bike pumps with them, and are happy to loan them out to their neighbors in the transition area.

After removing your warm clothes to put on your wetsuit , place them in the dry clothes bag. When you hand the bag off to your cheering squad on your way to the swim start, tell them to bring the bag to the finish line – you’ll be glad for warm, dry clothes.

Ironman Bag 2: Swim to Bike

Congratulations! You made it through the swim! Now’s the time to head out for a ride to dry off. Your swim-to-bike Ironman bag will be waiting for you in a designated area between the swim exit and changing tent.

Tri kit (if not wearing under wetsuit) Socks (optional) Bike shoes Helmet Sunglasses

Sunscreen Chamois cream

Jersey pocket stash:

Fuel (gels, chews, bars) Salt tablets and/or extra electrolyte powder/tablets for refilling bottles Spare tube, tire lever & CO2

Most Ironman swims take an hour or more, meaning it will be time to eat and drink immediately after finishing the swim. Consider putting an extra gel, bag of chews, or bar in your swim-to-bike bag, and take in some quick calories on your way to the bike.

DON’T pack in this Ironman bag:

Your water bottles. These should already be on your bike, either placed there at bike check-in the day before or the morning of the race.

Ironman Bag 3: Bike Special Needs

The #1 rule of packing a special needs Ironman bag is “Hope you never need to use your special needs bag.” You should aim to be self-sufficient during the race, carrying everything you’ll need on your bike or your person. However, things can (and do) go wrong during an Ironman, so these emergency stash bags, usually available around the halfway point of the race, do come in handy.

Single-use sunscreen packet Single-use chamois cream packet Single-dose pain reliever or anti-diarrheal medication Small bottle contact lens solution (if needed)

Extra (disposable/recyclable) bottles, pre-mixed with electrolyte powder/tab Extra gels, chews, bars Spare tube & CO2 cartridge

Nothing new on race day! Don’t put anything from the race expo or your swag bag any of your bags, even if you think it seems harmless. The halfway point of an Ironman triathlon is not the time you want to find out that you’re allergic to an ingredient in that trial-size sunscreen, or that those complimentary nutrition bars make you want to vomit.

Anything you want returned to you. Unlike transition bags, special needs bags don’t always make it back to their owners – so don’t put any costly items, like electronic devices or full-size sunscreen or chamois creams, in your bags.

Ironman Bag 4: Bike to Run

You’re on the home stretch! As soon as you hit the bike dismount line, volunteers will direct you to the final staging area on the way to the changing tent, where you’ll grab your bike-to-run transition bag.

Run shoes Socks Change of clothes (optional) Race belt with number Hydration belt or hand flask (if carrying own fluids) Hat/visor

Sunscreen Anti-chafe stick or cream

Pocket stash:

Gels, chews, or bars Salt tablets

Ironman Bag 5: Run Special Needs

Again, the aim is to be self-sufficient on the run. If all goes well, you’ll blow past the special needs bags on your way to a blazing-fast run split. But if things go wrong, here’s what you might want to have on hand:

Extra food, unless you have a strict fueling plan . The aid stations on the run course of Ironman triathlons are legendary, with everything from flat cola to chicken broth to cookies and potato chips. (Of course, they have the traditional gels and bars, too.)

Consider stashing a small “reward” in each of your bags, like a note from a loved one or a small sweet treat. If things get tough, getting to that reward can be a strong motivator to just get to transition, as well as a powerful pick-me-up when you get there.

Ironman Packing List: 31 Essentials for Race Day

Ironman Packing List: 31 Essentials for Race Day

Everything You Need for Race Day – Pack Like an Ironman

Race day is approaching. Whether this is your  first Ironman race  or your fifteenth, the pre-race excitement is already pulsing through you. You’ve trained you a** off the last few months and you’re ready to crush it. All those hours spent in the saddle, in the pool, in the zone…they’re all about to become very very worth it. Mentally, you’re ready. Physically, you’re ready. But what the heck do you need to pack?  We put together this Ironman Packing List to help you achieve peace of mind that you have everything you need to have a great day on race day.

There’s no worse feeling than training for months on end, only to show up on race day to realize that you forget your bike shoes, or your goggles, or your water bottles. Sure, most stuff you can buy replacements for last minute. But is that added stress and rushed activity really something you need before lining up to the starting line? Probably not.

Use this Ironman packing list to make sure you’ve packed everything you need for your Ironman or Half Ironman race. That way you can focus your attention exclusively on one thing: having your best possible performance on race day.

Let’s get into it.

What to Pack for the Swim

iron man travel bag

14. Fitness Watch

Another key component of sticking to your race plan if your fitness watch. For many people, this replaces the need for a trip computer on the bike while also allowing you to monitor your swim and run performance. I use the very basic  Fitbit Ionic , which you can get at a great price and does everything you need it to do. But I currently have my sights on an upgrade to the world of  Garmin .

15. Water Bottles

Note the plural! The weather is the biggest factor in determining how much you’ll need to drink. But at a minimum, be prepared with three water bottles, with some combination of electrolyte drink (i.e. Skratch) and water depending on what works for you. Two for your bike and then one in your transition area that you can sip on pre-race and if you need a quick hit during transitions.

16. Multi-tool

An absolute can’t-forget item on your Ironman packing list. This is something you should always have in a small carrier under your seat. Parts can shift around while transporting your bike, so having a multi-tool on hand to tighten and adjust components is key. Something basic like this one from  Crank Brothers  will do.

17. Spare Tire

Another thing that’s worth having strapped to your bike frame or under your seat is a space tire. Although I wouldn’t wish it on anyone, flats do happen during Ironman races. It sucks, but you need to be able to deal with it. This again emphasizes the importance of inspecting your tires before race day to look for any tears or embedded objects that could cause problems. Still, packing a spare inner tube and an  emergency CO2 cartridge  is a good idea. Of course, knowing  how to use  it is also important…File this under the “Hope to never need it” section of your Ironman packing list.

My Ironman Packing List – Gear Bags, Essentials And More

As I get closer to my first iron distance triathlon, I realize there’s a lot to plan and consider in the weeks leading up to the race day. So, I’ll use this post as my ‘Ironman packing list’ – it will help me stay organized and make sure I don’t forget something.

There’s also a high chance I’ll come back to this post prior to future races for reference.

Ironman packing list

Triathlon requires quite a lot of gear. It’s hard enough to anticipate what I’ll need on race day for one sport, let alone for three very different ones. Ironman is a very long race, so even forgetting something small can cost a lot on race day.

Having a packing list with all small things listed can really help to reduce stress and anxiety during the Ironman race week.

Related: Ironman Checklist – Tips On How To Organize The Ironman Race Week

One of the strategies that helps me to get organized is to split the packing into several categories and focus on one at a time.

First, I split everything into what I’ll need before, during and after the race. From there I also split the race part based on what goes in which gear bag – warm up & post-race (white), bike-related (blue) and run-related (red) stuff.

Ironman packing list for race day

Ironman packing list – race week essentials

With all the focus on the race it’s easy to forget that there are at least a couple of days between arriving and the race itself. Athletes need that for acclimatization, registration, gear set up, etc.

Traveling, regardless how far, can throw the whole training and taper routine off track.

It’s easy to eat unhealthy and miss those mobility sessions once you’re away from home. So, it’s important to pack for that time as well. For instance, consider any specific foods you might require, clothes to wear to make yourself comfortable and so on…

  • Regular clothes and training clothes for final sessions. I’m planning to run and do a bike ride in a race suit.
  • Any medication that can be required (painkillers, ‘cramp tablets’, something for the stomach, etc.).
  • A book – reading can really ease the nerves prior to race day
  • Any food to consume or cook throughout the week or on race morning. I’m taking oats and dried berries to make overnight oats for breakfast.
  • Sport drink and salt tablets to hydrate throughout the week.
  • Bike (obviously) & tools – floor pump, spares, tools, chain lube. I’m not flying, so I’m taking CO2 cartridges with me as well.
  • Electronics – cameras, phone, charging cords, extra batteries for chest strap and pedals, etc.
  • Tools – scissors, duct / electrical tape, etc.
  • Yoga mat and a foam roller.

Ironman gear bags

Even though I tend to over-plan everything, I try to keep things simple for race day. The less I have in my transition bag, the faster I go through it.

Aside from the white bag, my Ironman gear bags are pretty empty. In summary, my plan for warm up, T1 and T2 is the following:

White bag – before the start

My white bag on race day is going to be a heavy one. Aside from the warm up stuff and ‘street’ clothes, I’ll also put nutrition and all the tools I’ll need to set up the transition there.

As for the swim, the only question for me is if it will be a wetsuit legal race. With all the climate change I’m not sure anymore, even if historically it was a wetsuit race. In fact, in most races pro’s start without wetsuits, so I’m packing both the wetsuit and swimskin just in case.

In addition to the swim gear I’m also taking some pre-race ‘essentials’:

  • Old socks – to help put the wetsuit on and then walk around to stay warm. I’ll throw these out before the start
  • Old flip flops – to walk around before the start once I hand off the white bag. I’ll throw these out as well
  • Resistance bands – to warm up and mobilize the muscles before the swim
  • Cream – to lube the forearms and calves, so that the wetsuit comes off easily in T1
  • Sports drink to sip in the morning
  • Gel and a bottle of water – to drink before the race and wash the goggles before the start

Are you aiming to become a resilient athlete who is able to withstand any pressure? Be able to jump on any opportunity? Take any challenge life throws at you head on?

Then this book is for you.

Blue bag – the bike

For the bike my only concern is not to forget nutrition. It’s the longest part of the race and since I’m not using the ‘special needs’ bags, I’m setting up all nutrition on the bike.

So, besides what’s already in the blue bag, I’m taking:

  • Rubber bands – to secure shoes on the bike for ‘fly mount’. I’ll take these on race morning in a white bag .
  • Bike repair kit & spares – I have this set up on my bike behind the seat post already.
  • Bike nutrition – My plan is to pre-mix gels in a bottle and take energy bars in tri-suit pockets. I’ll take these on race morning in a white bag as well.

Red bag – the run

For the run part I don’t need much extra. Clothes that I’ve packed for the red bag are just fine. Some essentials are:

  • Run nutrition – I plan to pre-mix one gel in a bottle, so that I have fuel right after T2. I’ll take this on race morning in a white bag .
  • Vaseline – I don’t have any run cream to apply in T2 to prevent blisters yet, so I’ll look for it at the expo. If I don’t find it, I can also run without it – no big deal.

Ironman white bag

White bag – after the race

Aside from everything that’s already in the white bag (which is a lot), I’m also putting the things I’ll actually need after the race. It might take a couple of hours until I’m back at the hotel or at the car, so I’m planning for the longest scenario.

My plan A is to leave everything I’ve used to set up transition in the car and leave only the post-race stuff in the bag to hand out:

  • Small towel – to dry off after a shower
  • Dry clothes – that includes shoes and socks as well.
  • Warm jacket, as I’m often cold after the finish because of exhaustion.
  • Compression socks – I put these on after the shower to relieve/prevent calf pain.
  • Sports drink / electrolyte tabs to re-hydrate. I might skip this one if I’ll feel sick of all the sugar.
  • Energy bar – just in case I’m hungry and it takes too long to get back to the hotel or find a restaurant.
  • Recovery food – For me it’s a green smoothie with antioxidants to minimize inflammation. Otherwise, I’ll eat everything I see on my way after the finish. After the smoothie I’ll focus on what there is in the athlete garden.
