I think because I am a person who is not at all a fan of country music, my statement that Gretchen Wilson does put on a great show, holds more weight than any other country fan. She did not sway me into the genre, but I did have fun when my friend who is a true country music fan dragged me to one of her shows. Hailing from Pocohantas, Illinois, Gretchen has got some pipes on her. She is also a great instrumentalist, with her guitar always over her shoulder. Her band was super energetic, and all of them were on the stage dancing along, just as the entire crowd was. And speaking of the crowd, they loved her. Everyone seemed to be up dancing and moving, including myself, despite feeling a little out of place. She constantly thanked the audience for their support and love. Like all country songs, her songs are about life, but when you see her perform you can really tell the emotional connection she has to them. Her live show was her putting her heart on her sleeve and everyone knew it.

She performed an hour long set that included “There’s a Place In The Whiskey,” “All Jacked Up” and “Redneck Woman.” Most notable was the fact that everyone (except me) knew all the words and sung along through the entire set.

Gretchen Wilson Imagine your first single that you ever release being Grammy winning. It shows some incredible talent both from the performance aspect, and also the skilful writing. Gretchen Wilson’s debut single Redneck Woman did exactly this, and rocketed to the top of the charts before gaining a very well deserved Grammy. I followed Wilson’s career from the early days back in 2004, and when she released the news that she was compiling an album, I was excited to see her on tour. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to get tickets to the first tour, but in hindsight I’m glad, as I’m the biggest fan of her newer music too.

The venue reasonably large, so I thought that it might be a bit impersonal, but Wilson made a conscious effort to interact with the audience and have a general chat with everyone which was very humbling. She began the set with tracks from Here for the Party, her first album, and worked through the hits before moving on to her newest album Right On Time which everyone went crazy for. Her vocals were spot on, and she didn’t waver once. She’s extremely talented, and played a song for everyone, from new unheard tracks to the classics. Definitely seeing her again!

Gretchen Wilson is the American country music powerhouse. She has a Grammy award under her belt for the single “Redneck Woman”, which reached number one on the Billboard country charts. Tonight, she is performing songs from her five-album career so far. “Here for the Party” is the song that really kicks of the evening, which sees every single person in this venue, people from all walks of life just dancing like they don’t care. Her pedal steel and mandolin-laden music with mid tempo drum beats and enthusiastic delivery are key factors in making this performance a memorable one. “Homewrecker”, the number 2 single from 2005 crushes it bringing the house down. She his humble but sure of herself as she bounces off of her band, who supply some stunning harmonies, each one of them equipped with their instrument and a microphone. Their band carries this outfit through a very memorable evening indeed. Patrons are left extremely satisfied by this electric delivery of world-class country and western music.

Here's to this sister keeping it country! A little twist on one of the lines from Gretchen's big hit song 'Redkneck Woman. She is one of the last remaining country souls out there rocking on day and night. She's still touring and getting ladies to yell 'hell yeah' if they're keeping it country. Her lyrics are true, relatble, which is surely one of the many reasons why this strong independent woman has topped the country billboard charts! She may be into her 40's now but who says 40 isn't the new 20! She clearly still has it! As Gretchen's tune says she's 'Here for the party,' and it could well be that her party has just started now she's back on the road.

Gretchen Wilson

The Entertainer

Gretchen Wilson took the country music world by storm when she released her #1 hit song “Redneck Woman” in 2005. She immediately landed an opening slot with Brooks & Dunn and would go on to tour with Kenny Chesney the following year. Since the days of being an opening act, Wilson has been fortunate enough to have been able to host artists like Trace Atkins and Van Zandt on her own headlining shows. 2012 was a prolific year for Gretchen as she would embark on one of the year’s hottest tour packages: “The Outlaw Tour with ZZ Top and 3 Doors Down”.

In 2014 Gretchen took some time off to be a full time mom to her daughter but returned several years later with an album and a tour that picked up right where she left off. Her live shows are a trip back to the old days featuring familiar titles and a band that rocks as hard as the Redneck Woman does.

Gretchen will be featuring the next “redneck woman” on her label during her shows this summer. Jessie G has recently signed with Gretchen’s label Redneck Records, and will be giving fans a preview of what they are working on.

Big & Rich, Gretchen Wilson Announce Tour

Big & Rich, Gretchen Wilson Announce Tour

The 2024 concert season, “Ain’t Ever Gonna Be The Same,” as the genre bending chart-topping duo Big & Rich, in collaboration with Gretchen Wilson, announce the revival of the MuzikMafia for a 20th-anniversary tour. The multi-platinum hit-makers are set to kick off the tour February 23rd at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo. No Nashville date as of yet.

In a celebration of two decades of musical fellowship, the MuzikMafia will hit the road once again, promising fans an experience filled with the spirit of country music collaboration and innovation that kicked off a true musical ‘movement.’ “The movement, a force to be reckoned with, changed the course of country music,” says John Rich of Big & Rich.

MuzikMafia, a musical movement founded in the early 2000s, became synonymous with breaking genre boundaries and fostering creativity. Big & Rich, Gretchen Wilson and Cowboy Troy, key figures in the original MuzikMafia lineup, are set to bring back the magic that made the movement a force to be reckoned with. The legendary MuzikMafia jam sessions, was a movement that launched numerous careers and often had such superstars as Kid Rock, Martina McBride, Keith Urban, Tim McGraw, Bon Jovi, Faith Hill and others drop by to jam on any given night.

The tour is expected to showcase a mix of classic hits from their massive debut albums Here For The Party and Horse Of A Different Color that defined the act’s careers, as well as new collaborations that demonstrate the enduring creativity of these country music icons.

“Reuniting for the 20th Anniversary Celebration Tour feels like coming home,” expressed Big & Rich. “The energy and camaraderie that defined the movement are as alive as ever, and we can’t wait to share that with our fans.”

Gretchen Wilson added, “I’m not sure if it’s the smile on Kenny’s face, the fire in John’s eyes, or the red of my neck…but something tells me this year’s 20th anniversary is gonna be epic!”

Big & Rich, Gretchen Wilson, Craig Morgan Lead New 2000s Country Cruise ‘Boots on the Water’

By Joseph Hudak

Joseph Hudak

There’s cruises for outlaw country, classic country, and Americana country. Now, 2000s country finally gets its due. In 2025, the Boots on the Water cruise will assemble some of the biggest names from the Aughts for a five-day voyage to the Bahamas.

Big & Rich — the duo of Big Kenny Alphin and John Rich — will headline with special guest Gretchen Wilson in a mini-reunion of the Muzik Mafia that ran roughshod over the mid-2000s. Other Aught-shots aboard include Craig Morgan (“That’s What I Love About Sunday,” 2004), Lonestar (“I’m Already There,” 2001), Jo Dee Messina (“My Give a Damn’s Busted,” 2005), and Montgomery Gentry featuring Eddie Montgomery (“Something to Be Proud Of,” 2005).

Presented by Sixthman, the festival-at-sea company, and Live Nation’s Vibee, the five-day trip sets sail Feb. 8, 2025, from Miami for Nassau in the Bahamas, and returns to port Feb. 13. Pre-sale signups are now open, with a public on-sale set for April 5th at the cruise’s website .

Country cruises are booming. Next year, the ninth Outlaw Country Cruise will enlist Old Crow Medicine Show, Lucinda Williams, and Steve Earle for the first voyage since the cruise’s de facto emcee, Mojo Nixon , died earlier this year. And on April 1st, Midland will sail on their first branded voyage, the Last Resort Cruise , with Flatland Cavalry, Orville Peck, Kaitlin Butts, and the recently rebranded Silverada (formerly Mike and the Moonpies) on the lineup.

Whatever Happened To Gretchen Wilson?

Gretchen Wilson posing for cameras

Gretchen Wilson was undoubtedly one of the biggest Nashville stars of the 2000s. She scored three consecutive number-one albums on the Hot Country Albums, with "All Jacked Up" even reaching pole position on the Billboard 200. And the Illinois native received 10 Grammy Award nominations, picking up Best Female Country Vocal Performance for "Redneck Woman."

Speaking to the Los Angeles Times about the hit song, Wilson affirmed that she was simply speaking her own truth in the lyrics — one that many other women could likely relate to but weren't exactly hearing in other country songs at that time. "A redneck woman is hard-working, she's raising a family and holding down a job at the same time and is proud of who she is, no matter what," she said. That sentiment can certainly be applied to the highs and lows of the musician and proud mom's entire career.

At the end of the decade, she left Sony's Columbia Nashville to form her own Redneck Records label, and Wilson's success began to dwindle. She hasn't come close to hitting the top spot on any kind of chart and the Grammys panel hasn't recognized her since 2011. So what exactly happened to the one-time country music favorite? Well, Wilson has certainly had her fair share of drama, but she's also still out there performing the ballsy country music she made her name with — proud of who she is, no matter what. Here's a look at her recent life story.

Gretchen Wilson was arrested at an airport

As tabloids love to eagerly remind readers, there seems to be something about airports that brings out the worst behavior in celebrities . And in August 2018, Gretchen Wilson added her name to this hall of shame when she was charged with a breach of peace misdemeanor at Connecticut's Bradley International Airport. A source had told TMZ that the "Redneck Woman" singer had gotten into a fight with another passenger aboard an American Airlines flight from Washington D.C. According to CNN , after landing, the star was arrested and then charged by state police after acting belligerently toward them.

Wilson addressed the alleged incident a week later, informing her Facebook followers that she couldn't go into details due to legal reasons. However, just a few days later, she did claim to  Taste of Country  that the tabloid version of her troubles was far from the truth. "People who know me know that I just wanna get it straight," she said. "I'm reading all of these headlines ... like, 'Oh gosh, it's so wrong, it's all so wrong!'"

In September 2018, the charges against Wilson were eventually dropped, per People . In order to settle the charge, Wilson agreed to donate $500 to a charity. Two months later, in another interview with Taste of Country, she further insisted  that the drama had been a misunderstanding and she wasn't involved in any altercation on an airplane. Per  AP , Wilson griped to the press that celebrities simply weren't allowed to have off days like ordinary people.

Did she cause a late-night hotel disturbance?

Just two years after the Connecticut airport incident, Gretchen Wilson once again found herself in the headlines after she was accused of creating a disturbance. On this occasion, the Hotel Encanto in Las Cruces, New Mexico was the scene of all the drama. But once again, the country star claimed she was entirely innocent.

According to the 911 call made by a hotel staff member, Wilson and her fiance had been asked to quieten down several times after numerous complaints from fellow guests. "Her words [were], 'I paid for the room — I could care less what people think,'" the employee in question claimed, per Page Six . The staff member added, "Her level of talking is like our yelling." However, bodycam police footage obtained by the Associated Press threw some doubt on claims on either side of the argument.

According to the outlet, the video shows cops talking with a calm and composed Wilson in the hallway before they enter her room. Despite having told them, "We don't even have a TV on. We were very quiet," the room is totally dark save for the light from the television. After cops deduced that no noise crime had been committed, Wilson was told that the hotel manager decided she and her fiance could stay. However, she assured them she was leaving immediately for another establishment, stating, "We have been treated like s*** since we've been here." Wilson later implored her Twitter followers to boycott the offending hotel.

Gretchen Wilson found success difficult to deal with

Growing up, Gretchen Wilson lived in the small town of Pocahontas, Illinois, which had a population of approximately 800 people at that time. So the musician no doubt experienced quite the culture shock when she was thrust into the Grammy Award-winning, chart-topping limelight. In a 2017 interview with The Boot , the singer revealed that she struggled to adapt. "I spent my whole life looking for that moment, but as prepared as I thought I was, I wasn't. It happened so fast. I had a major label deal at the time, and I think that they thought that I was the next Shania Twain," she explained. "... There was one trip that, I think, we crossed the International Date Line three times in a week and a half. I didn't know what day it was."

To make things even more challenging, Wilson was also busy juggling her music career with motherhood having given birth to daughter Gracie in 2000. The country music favorite often took her offspring out on tour with her, something she now realizes was a recipe for chaos, stating, "Can you imagine flying to Australia and worrying where the Ovaltine and diapers and stuff like that are? It was kind of nutty in the beginning."

The pressures of touring got to her

From her 2004 debut "Here for the Party" up to 2013's "Right on Time," Gretchen Wilson spent a lot of time on tour. And having spent so many years on the live circuit, the country star perhaps inevitably ended up experiencing one of the most recurring pop star problems: total and utter burnout.

Speaking to The Boot in 2017, the "When I Think About Cheatin'" singer admitted that she needed some lengthy "me time" to recuperate from life on the road. "It wasn't just summertime touring — it was all year, a lot of the year, every year, for 12 years," she said. "I got wore out. I feel like everything got wore out, not just vocally, but I, just physically, got wore out, and I needed a little time off." Wilson was aware of how lucky she was to be in the position to press pause on her career, adding, "Not too many people get to go, 'I'm going to stay home with my kid for two years' ... so I feel very fortunate that I got to do that. But that time gave me the [desire] to get creative, too ... It gave me time to think." That same year, Wilson announced her return to the stage to promote her seventh studio effort "Ready to Get Rowdy."

Faith Hill played a major part in her career

You might not expect country music golden girl Faith Hill to have been a major source of inspiration for proud redneck Gretchen Wilson. But in a 2020 interview with Taste of Country , the latter revealed that she owes much of her career to the former.

Wilson recalled how she and John Rich, the Lonestar bassist who co-produced her 2004 debut album "Here for the Party," were once watching music television when the promo for Hill's "Breathe" popped up. The singer said, "She's gorgeous. She looks like a supermodel. She's rolling around in satin sheets ... I looked at John and said, 'This is probably never gonna happen for me because I'll never look like that, and I'll never be that. That is just not the kind of woman I am.'"

Rich encouraged Wilson to embrace the kind of woman she is, and the result was "Redneck Woman," the track which not only topped the US Hot Country Songs chart but also won the Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance. The star added, "For a long time, I feel like in country music, women had gotten so slick and soft and pretty. So being authentic and being real, that is what got me to this dance."

Kid Rock and Gretchen Wilson joined forces

Kid Rock is another one-time country music favorite whose commercial fortunes now appear to be in decline. But that didn't stop Gretchen Wilson from roping him in for her 2017 comeback album "Ready to Get Rowdy." Indeed, the pair, who have been friends since the mid-'00s, joined forces on the track "Bad Feeling."

While promoting the record, Wilson told Rare Country (via American Songwriter ) that she and Rock first forged a connection after meeting at producer John Rich's 30th birthday bash. "We started talking and, ever since then, we get together whenever we can, whether that's to drink some beers or make some music." The Grammy Award winner also revealed that "Bad Feeling" was inspired by one particular get-together in which the American Badass was clearly going through a rough time.

"He was sort of a mess over everything, and I just left with this song sort of in my head," Wilson remarked. "I got together with a couple of amazing songwriters and got to writing. We trade favors. It was [Rock's] turn, so I asked him to sing on it with me, and I was really impressed with his vocals." Luckily, Rock's state of mind had improved by the time he headed into the studio with his long-time pal.

Gretchen Wilson is proud of her daughter

Born at the turn of the century, Gretchen Wilson's daughter Grace Penner is now a film production manager who recently graduated from Belmont University. And her country singer mum couldn't be prouder, as she told John Rich, her long-time producer and host of " The Pursuit! " in 2020. "My daughter is the first person in my family's history to go to college, and she wouldn't be there if I hadn't decided that I can do both things [being a mom and a successful musician]," she said. "I can imagine life without this career. Couldn't imagine it without her."

Wilson admitted that she feared her musical dream would shatter once she fell pregnant with Grace. "I was in the middle of recording and in big-time studios in Nashville, Tennessee, with big-time people. And my career was taking off and it was amazing. And then all the sudden boom ... I thought it was all going to come to an end." However, once Rich, who produced Wilson's 2004 debut album "Here for the Party," reminded her that Loretta Lynn had multiple children, the star recognized she could be both a mother and Grammy Award-winning, chart-topping star.

She has been busy mentoring Jessie G

Gretchen Wilson may have been quiet on the musical front as of late. But she still has at least one foot in Nashville waters as the mentor of an emerging country singer. The singer signed Jessie G (not to be confused with "Price Tag" hitmaker Jessie J) to her Redneck Records label in 2018 and has been very much a hands-on boss since.

Speaking to Taste of Country , Wilson remarked that she was immensely proud of her protégé, an Oregon native who previously worked as a commercial fisher. "There's not a lot of women that I come across that are as tough as she is," she said. "There's a lot of girls that sing pretty. There's a lot of girls that look great and could probably go out there and probably have a career for a minute. But there's not a lot of girls that have the strength to endure what this is really all about."

Wilson acknowledged that she can be a bit overbearing when it comes to the ins and outs of guiding Jessie's career. But the latter insisted that she has nothing but love for the woman who plucked her from obscurity, saying, "She's got one of the biggest hearts ever and that makes her a great boss."

Wilson headed back out on tour

After several years away from the live circuit, Gretchen Wilson decided to return to the road in 2018 for a tour alongside Redneck Records signing Jessie G. "The Workin' Women Tour" was a little less exhausting than her previous itineraries. Only a handful of headlining shows were announced alongside performances at intriguing-sounding events such as Obetz Zucchinifest and the Tennessee Soybean Festival.

In an interview with The Boot, Wilson explained that she was taking things much easier this time around in order to avoid the burnout of her earlier days. The "Work Hard, Play Harder" singer also admitted that after such a long time away from the stage, she was a little apprehensive about playing in front of a crowd again.

However, Wilson acknowledged that the lure of performing had ultimately been too hard to resist. "I've missed that a lot, more than I think I know," she said. "I've missed being onstage and just feeling the excitement from the crowd and hearing them sing my words back to me. It's the greatest high on Earth. It's a lot of emotions; it's a lot of different feelings all balled into one."

She had a Waffle House Christmas

Gretchen Wilson got the Christmas present of her dreams in 2018 when she was invited to work with one of her all-time musical icons — Bill Anderson. While she didn't actually get to sing alongside the legendary singer-songwriter, she was instead asked to put on a fast-food uniform for the music video for "Waffle House Christmas," the festive single from his 72nd studio album, "Anderson" (yes, 72nd!).

Wilson joined several other country singers in the promo including Tanya Tucker, Jeannie Seely, and her close friend Kid Rock. And in a press release for the clip, the chart-topper revealed she couldn't have been more excited at the prospect. "I am so grateful that I was asked to be involved in something like this," she said. "I've been such a fan of Bill Anderson for so long. And I get to hang out with my heroes!"

But as she explained, this wasn't the first time that Wilson had donned such an outfit. "I also had a Waffle House uniform in my closet from a television special we did several years ago, so it's been a lot of fun being part of this music video." It also wasn't the first time that she'd embraced the holiday season in her career. In 2013, she released the Yuletide album, "Christmas In My Heart."

A whiskey company tapped her up as an ambassador

Having scored a U.S. Country number one with "Redneck Woman," Gretchen Wilson was undoubtedly a no-brainer when it came to selecting ambassadors for Redneck Riviera Whiskey in 2018. The Grammy Award winner joined fellow country stars Colt Ford and Granger Smith to promote the brand owned by John Rich, the producer of her 2004 debut album "Here for the Party." In a press release about the partnership published by Business Wire , Wilson said, "When John and I wrote 'Redneck Woman' 15 years ago, little did we know there would be a Redneck Riviera Whiskey someday. While that [song] changed my life, here's to hoping this whiskey will change your attitude."

Let's just hope that Rich didn't read the interview Wilson gave to High Octane a year later. When asked about her personal evolution, the Nashville favorite answered, "We all get older; my drink of choice has graduated just like my age has. I'm more of a red wine sipper now. I still get on the Jack Daniels every once in a while, but I also get up every morning and get on the John Deere zero turn and mow the yard and work outside."

Gretchen continues to celebrate George Jones

Gretchen Wilson has always been something of a George Jones fangirl. In a 2004 Billboard article, the singer revealed that after opening for the country legend, she would stand at the side of the stage just to get a glimpse of him and that she'd sneakily touch his guitar, too. Wilson has continued to pay her respects following his death in 2013. Six years later, she joined her Redneck Records protégé Jessie G for a performance of "Stacy" at the George Jones Museum.

In 2023, she then joined the likes of Brad Paisley, Trace Adkins, and Dierks Bentley at Still Playin' Possum: Music and Memories of George Jones, a tribute show held at Huntsville's Von Braun Center. Wilson performed "I Always Get Lucky with You" at the event, a ballad originally recorded by Merle Haggard in 1981 but released as a single two years later by Jones. Alabama.com was full of praise for the Grammy Award winner's interpretation, writing that she "brought grit" to what was Jones' final U.S. Country chart No. 1 single.

She returned to the CMAs stage

During the '00s, Gretchen Wilson amassed five nominations at the Country Music Association Awards, winning Female Vocalist of the Year in 2005. But the Tennessee native was snubbed by the event throughout the following decade. That is, until, she was invited back to its stage in 2019 for a celebration of women's contributions to country music. Wilson joined an all-star medley of some of the greatest country songs ever performed by women alongside such artists as Terri Clark, Martina McBride, and the show's co-host Dolly Parton. As part of that performance, Wilson was able to belt out her 2004 chart-topping debut single, "Redneck Woman." But the highlight of the singer's night may well have been her interaction with one of the night's co-hosts.

A publicist for Wilson told Country Now that during a rehearsal for the ceremony, the "Come to Bed" hitmaker complimented Parton on her black rhinestone pants, adding that she'd like to find a similar pair herself. Instead of simply offering directions to the nearest boutique, the country legend generously offered her own pair. Wilson gleefully accepted and wore the pants on the night itself.

stay in tune with your favorite country stars.

Gretchen Wilson statement about Loretta Lynn

Loretta Lynn was the living, breathing description of what it meant to be a woman of country music. Sadly, and appropriately… she takes it with her. No one will ever be more.”  — Gretchen Wilson

Country’s Chatter Photo

Gretchen counted Loretta Lynn a friend and one of her main musical influences, and the two performed together on many occasions. In 2007, Loretta was performing her “You Ain’t Woman Enough To Take My Man” hit on the Grand Ole Opry and called Gretchen Out to join her midway through the song. Gretchen performed “Don’t Come Home A Drinkin’ (With Lovin’ On Your Mind)” on the 2010 album  Coal Miner’s Daughter: A Tribute to Loretta Lynn.  On her own  Ready To Get Rowdy  album, Gretchen dedicated her original song “A Little Loretta” to the First Lady of Country Music.

About Gretchen Wilson

Gretchen Frances Wilson (born June 26, 1973) is an American country artist. She made her debut in March 2004 with the Grammy Award-winning single "Redneck Woman," a number-one hit on the Billboard country charts. The song served as the lead-off single of her debut album, Here for the Party . Wilson followed this album one year later with All Jacked Up , the title track of which became the highest-debuting single for a female country artist upon its 2005 release. A third album, One of the Boys , was released in 2007.

Overall, Wilson has charted 13 singles on the Billboard country charts, of which five have reached Top Ten: the Number One "Redneck Woman", as well as "Here for the Party" (#3, 2004), "When I Think About Cheatin'" (#4, 2004), "Homewrecker" (#2, 2005), and "All Jacked Up" (#8, 2005). The album Here for the Party was certified 5× Multi-Platinum by the RIAA for sales of five million copies, while All Jacked Up was certified platinum. She has sold over 8 million records worldwide.

What Happened To Gretchen Wilson – What’s She Doing Now in 2024

gretchen wilson tour 2022

“Redneck woman” Gretchen Wilson said that she showed up to change the game. Making a handful of hit albums, and millions of dollars, all within a few years despite her non-traditional country image as just “one of the boys.” Yet, Wilson’s time in the sun was soon eclipsed by other country stars, and after several big changes in her career, Wilson found herself back outside of the music world she spent her entire youth desperate to break into. The story of the rise and fall of the country music tough gal, Gretchen Wilson, is full of fame, fortune, and heartbreak.

Table of Contents

Gretchen Wilson’s Youth

gretchen-wilson-young

Gretchen Wilson found a home with a country artist collective known has the “Muzik Mafia.” The Muzik Mafia, founded by the famous country duo Big & Rich, was based on a simple premise: local artists would regularly come together for public jam sessions without any hint of competition or greed, only love and cooperation. These Tuesday night jam sessions took off, growing in popularity, as the members experimented with styles and genre mixing, playing everything from rock to country to R&B to reggae. There was even a nearly seven foot tall rapping cowboy in the gang. The collective have since hosted mic nights and jam sessions with artists as diverse as Kid Rock, Bon Jovi, Jewel, Bobby Brown, and Sisqo. According to Wilson, one night when she and John Rich were watching music videos of flashy, glamourous country star women, Wilson commented that she would never make it big like them, because she was just a “redneck woman.” Rich realized the power of the idea, one which many Southern gals could relate to, and Wilson’s first hit single, “Redneck Woman” was born.

Gretchen Wilson’s second album, All Jacked Up, was successful in its own right. Dropping in the fall of 2005, the title track would set a record for the highest debut for a female artist on the country charts, starting at No. 21. The album itself had a wildly hot debut as well, appearing in the top No. 1 slot on the Billboard Top 200 Album chart, knocking off Ten Thousand Fists by the Chicago alt metal band Disturbed. Ultimately, the album was not quite the hit that Wilson had seen with Here for the Party though, moving only about one million copies in the U.S. The record was reportedly rushed, following hot on the heels of Here for the Party, with Wilson being forced to write much of the material on the road. Critics had nothing bad to say about Wilson’s vocal work, but the instrumental arrangements of the album itself were considered subpar. In the album’s lyrics, Wilson took up the red banner of the culture war by combating Hollywood body images, applauding soldiers, cheering on true Christians, and celebrating Skoal. This championing of Southern ideals would pay off big time for Wilson, who was invited to sing the national anthem at the Republican National Convention a few years later, in 2008. Wilson’s cover of Heart’s classic femme fatale anthem, “Barracuda” was also briefly used as Sarah Palin’s theme song on the campaign trail.

Wilson’s next two albums, appearing at an even more rapid fire pace, failed to return the artist to her former success. 2007’s One of the Boys was followed closely by I Got Your Country Right Here in 2008. The first topped the country charts and even reached No. 5 on the Billboard Top 200, but it failed to go platinum with singles never breaking into the top 30. After I Got Your Country Right Here was repeatedly delayed and its lead singles debuted to even less enthusiastic fanfare, Wilson announced that she was breaking up with Sony, unsatisfied with their handling of her affairs. At that point though, Wilson could afford to launch her own label, Redneck Records. I Got Your Country Right Here dropped on Redneck in March of 2010. Though it would only sell about 50,000 copies in the following few months, Wilson taking control of production meant that she could carve out a larger slice of the pie for herself anyway. Still though, Wilson’s overnight success story was drawing to a close.

Where is Gretchen Wilson Now in 2024?

The singer hasn’t released any new singles since 2018 (her most recent song is Stacy from the album Ready to Get Rowdy ). However, she did work on an acoustic version of Blue Collar Bayou with Jessie G and Rob Hatch in 2020. She was also featured on The Song on AXS TV back in September 2020.

In terms of live shows, her last concert (which was part of her 2019 tour) was at the 4 Bears Casino and Lodge in North Dakota. Due to COVID-19, however, she hasn’t held any live concerts in the recent years. It’s currently unknown when her next tour will be.

In 2018, she also got arrested over a dispute on an airplane. Allegedly, she had shoved a fellow passenger who’d gotten to the bathroom before her. The two continued to exchange threatening hand gestures throughout the remainder of the flight, which led the crew to request security at the gate. She was eventually charged with breach of peace with a bond of $1,000.

And while she has several social media accounts, she hasn’t updated them since 2020. Her Twitter account was last updated on September 2, 2020 and her Instagram was last updated on August 4, 2020. So while Gretchen Wilson still appears to be healthy she’s removed herself a fair bit from the spotlight as of 2024.

Awesome voice! Just listened to her version of Barracuda with Alice in Chains, live. Looked like Nancy Wilson joined on guitar. (I see so mention of family ties with Anne and Nancy, but she sounds like Anne, at her strongest!) This Redneck Woman needs to go rock n roll!!!

WOW! Just listened to it. What a powerhouse she is; I miss her . I’ve got all of her country albums. There is ALWAYS a place for that kind of talent!

She’s a true talent! I miss Gretchen! I still have her c.d’s in my truck! C’mon Grerchen make some real music for us. I’m tired of this b.s “modern country”

I love Getchen..there is room for everyone in the country music business..give us some more Gretchen…please!!!!!!!

She was a rocker at age 15 with bay wolf a band that played at granny’s rocker in edwardsville ill. She has a true voice.

Bummer…she’s soooo cool!

I still think her performance of barracuda with Alice in Chains, demonstrated her true calling. First class rock singer.

That killed.

I could swear it was Nancy belting it out like 1977.

That sustained “ohhh” sent chills down my spine. She should have been a rock star. She killed “Her Strut” by Seger, too

Why, oh why, didn’t she just take the country badsss attitude and rock out? I’d pay to see her do Barracuda with a decent band.

Who cares if country like her?

I’ve never heard anyone cover Barracuda even close to that awesomely. Cudos, Ms. Wilson. Do a duet with Nancy.

She fool’n ROCKS country…..when you want to party, you put her on!!!!

Another flash in the pan. Same old story. Good luck to her.

Are you kidding me!!!! This is why I haven’t heard a new song!!!! How do we get Gretchen Wilson back!?

Someone summerize this for me!

She played at some republican events. That’s why.

Well, you’d think it would be foolish to hitch your wagon to the political party that officially hates women, but I’m not sure that’s the way it is.

Go with that, it’s important to keep the lies alive or your fantasy based religion will die. Someday you may grow up and respect logic and reason.

If you run with women who claim to be feminist but who push the kind of law that says burkas and female genital mutilation is a-okay, like the one that spoke on January 21, then you’re running with women-demoting demagogues.

If you try to “help” women by telling mothers it’s okay to sacrifice the babies in their womb to convenience, boyfriends, pressure from Dad, you are hurting women.

If you deny the link between abortion and breast cancer, then you’re hurting women.

If your welfare state encourages single parent households, by replacing the breadwinner with free money confiscated from someone else, then you are hurting the women and you are hurting their children.

If you declare a war on poverty then 50 years later realize it’s worse than ever, then demand more of the policies that caused more problems than it solved, you’re hurting women.

Gretchen’s story is amazing. She is a talented artist, but the public has found other acts to follow. I hope she saved her money. It’s very very hard to have your second, third, fourth album break as big as her first one did. If she still gets booked, works the road, she will do fine. Eventually that gets old, and it’s a hard life after 40. She has made her mark and done quite well. She overcame many obstacles and survived. Lots of people don’t–remember Mindy McCready? I’ve seen many fine TX musicians never get a record deal let alone sell five million albums. I wish her continued success.

I paid for Gretchen Wilson’s music and still listen to it today. I DO NOT listen to “poppy, sequined” singers of any ilk.

I miss her…..she sings my soul
