Internationally renowned musician and film composer Goran Bregović (born 22nd March 1950), hailing from Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina, blends European classical music with Eastern-European folk and the polyphonic harmonies of brass bands from the Balkans.

In Bregović's youth, he was frequently moving and out of school bands, often due to his own misbehaviour resulting in his dismissal from the school. Despite this, Bregović built his talents on bass, guitar and violin, eventually becoming a sort-after musician, invited to play with Željko Bebek in his band Kodeski at the age of 18. Kodeski was to be the precursor to the development of Bijelo Dugme, a rock band that would go on to become one of the most popular bands in SFR Yugoslavia. Bregović became the main creative force in the band, playing lead guitar with them from 1974 to 1989, with their Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath influenced rock finding widespread appeal in the Balkans, releasing a total of nine albums before the band collapsed.

After the end of Bijelo Dugme, Bregović turned to film music, finding fortunate success with his first project, Emir Kusturica's "Time of the Gypsies" (1989), with both the film and the soundtrack receiving praise. Their partnership continued for Kusturica's next film "Arizona Dream" (1993), with Bregović's compositions being performed by Iggy Pop for the film.

Moving to Paris following the outbreak of the Balkan war, his next project was for Patrice Chéreau's "Queen Margot," continuing his previous successes, with the film winning two awards at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival. The following year, Bregović worked on another award-winning film, composing the music for Kusturica's "Underground" which received the Golden Palm Award. These early successes in his film composition career cemented his reputation and esteem, leading to continuing achievements in his music career.

Bregović has been involved with over thirty film scores and has composed music for eleven movie soundtracks. His prolific work over three decades has led to achieving 6 million album sales to his name. As well as his film composition, Bregović has also released collaborative ventures with various musicians, creating his own 40-piece band and orchestra, who perform traditional Balkan music, known as his Weddings and Funerals Orchestra.

Live reviews

Probably best known, in the West at least, for his numerous film scores, and particularly those for director Emir Kusturica. However, he’s been known as a Rock star in former Yugoslavia since the 1970s. Bregovic’s latest project is called the Wedding and Funeral Orchestra, which varies greatly in size, its smallest incarnation consisting of 10 members, going up to 37 at its largest. The orchestra includes a male choir, a string quartet, a brass section, a smaller female choir, and Bregovic himself, seated at the center, in a white suit brandishing his electric guitar. At London’s Royal Festival Hall we got the 18-strong version of the Wedding and Funeral Orchestra. Their two-hour concert took us through many different ‘settings’ - there was something decidedly filmic or dramatic about a lot of the music. Some pieces were mournful and sad, and those were perhaps the best vehicles for really savouring the choirs’ dissonant yet beautiful Balkan harmonies. The brass band was central in delivering what the audience had come for - a Gypsy knees-up, although having said that the set was very varied, in an almost rollercoaster-like fashion. The audience were with him the whole way. I highly recommend checking them out if they’re in town!

I think most musicians hope to achieve a namesake that is revered worldwide as a master of their craft. Yugoslavian film composer and musician Goran Bregovic can boast this having conquered globally with his expert knowledge of genre and form and varied list of clientele.

At the age of 65, he demonstrates the energy of a musician half his age as he takes to the stage regularly and plays luxurious shows of two hours in length. The operation is not solely about Goran as he is joined by a large array of musicians onstage to create his lush soundscapes. There are also a variety of vocalists to add a really nice multi-textured effect on the music. 'In the Death Car' is a personal highlight as it seems to last for an entirety with sweeping verses and cinematic chorus permeating around the venue. The audience is clearly moved by the finale as the applause that had been kept suitably subdued for the setting throughout are now threatening to take the roof clear off the venue as Bregovic takes his final bows.

Amazing concert, I love his new repertoire. Only sad that I didn’t manage to sit closer to the stage as the tickets got sold out quickly. At the back there were too many people going in and out and talking during the concert so my enjoyment was curtailed. The Royal festival hall should do something about this. Top right corner balcony (if your back is to the stage) were really out of order. At one point a whole row of people got up, left and came back. I think they were buying drinks.

I was very much looking forward to Goran Bergovic gig. However, the sound was not great in side stalls in Royal Festival Hall. We could almost hear our own conversation and everything else around us.

Another disappointment that we had was that the drums sound was a playback, which is very shocking and unprofessional for such a big live gig.

I am amazed that after playing in Russia-invaded Crimea and openly supporting Putin's policy, he tours Europe. It's not a secret, it's on Wikipedia for everyone to see. What a disgrace. He should go to Russia and play his concerts there, there's enough space for him to tour.

Passion and Harmony! Music that brings people together. Bregovic and the amazing ensemble of musicians under his guidance are a force! Enjoyed every minute. Strathmore is a great venue that completed this wonderful experience.

Just amazing as usual... Goran put the fire to the cabaret sauvage the minute he was on stage and the madness kept going during 2 hours which flew by! Just looking forward for his next show!

Quite a few musicians would be content with only a fragment of Goran Bregović’ s career. Contemporary composer, traditional musician or rock star, he did not have to choose – he took it
all to invent a music that is both universal and unmistakably his own.

Goran Bregovic’s musical adventures began in the sixties at a music school in Sarajevo. There he started learning to paly violin and got acquainted with the counterpoint and harmony, but this just didn’t seem fun enough…

Even in Tito’s Yugoslavia rock n' roll sets ablaze the sixties. The answers to adolescent revolt that this genre offers and the discovery of the power of attraction that the electric guitar has for the female sex, light the way for Goran. He continues studies of philosophy and sociology, but also forms a rock group - Bijelo Dugme (White Button). Their first album is an immediate success that albums and 3 singers since its beginning, the group sold millions of albums and brought together thousands of people each time it played in public. Son of a Serbian mother and a Croatian father living in Muslim Sarajevo, Goran is everyone’s hero, but noticing the rise of a fanatical nationalistic fever that takes hold of the audience in his concerts, he decides to disband Bijelo Dugme.

At the end of the eighties, the film-maker Emir Kusturica, a fan of his work, convinces him to take part in his next project. Writing music for « Time of the Gypsies» allows Goran to sharpen his sense of musical dramaturgy and to work around Gypsy music that fascinates him. The combination of Kusturica’s images and Bregovic’s notes sublimates a poignant story that leaves a strong mark. For « Arizona dream » the twosome travels to the US where Kusturica films Faye Dunaway, Jerry Lewis and Johnny Depp and Bregovic writes for the Godfather of punk rock, Iggy Pop.

In 1994 in Patrice Chereau’s « Reine Margot » his music lights a sparkle in the eye of the French actress Isabelle Adjani and in the voice of the Israeli star Ofra Haza. This film broadens his reputation as a composer. The following year, while the war ravages their country, Bregovic and Kusturica collaborate one last time on « Underground », Palme d’Or at the Cannes Festival in 1995. For this film Goran calls on Saban Bajramovic, known as « Gypsy Sinatra », and the Cape Verdean diva, Cesaria Evora.

Bregovic then goes back to live concerts. In his Wedding and Funeral Orchestra he mixes Gypsy musicians on wind instruments with percussions, Bulgarian polyphonies and a choir of male voices. Dressed in white, seated between his amplifier and computer, an electric guitar in his hand, he conducts this motley group that varies in size (9 to 19 musicians) according to the occasion. For almost twenty years Wedding and Funeral Orchestra has been roaming all continents of the known world on an unending tour that so far totals some 1500 shows.

When he is not on stage Bregovic composes pieces that have become part of the contemporary serious music scène: an oratorio « My Heart has become Tolerant » around the three monotheistic religions, or, with only a wink to Bizet, proposes the first Gypsy opera « Goran Bregovic’s Karmen with a Happy End », a monologue for an actress and his big band “Diary of an Unhappy Queen”, and now a new project for his band and a symphony orchestra entitled « Three Letters from Sarajevo ». His acute capacity to understand and assimilate vastly varied musical cultures allows him to incorporate into his music traditional Corsican, Georgian or Bulgarian chants, as well as elements of techno culture - collaboration with the German dj Shantel.

His boundless talent attracts first class artists like the emblematic Greek musician George Dalaras, the Polish star Kayah, Turkish icon Sezen Aksu, the mythic pop singer Scott Walker, The Gypsy Kings, Asaf Avidan, Bebe...

Very few musicians have managed to develop an art of such amplitude that coherently mixes together such a great variety of styles and techniques without losing its identity. A Bregovic piece can be recognized on the very first hearing and seems to address the whole Earth with no distinction of race, sex, age or religion. Benjamin Minimum (Mondomix)
