DIY dog crate

There are an astonishing array of crates on the market, but some owners still have trouble finding one that fits the bill.

You may, for example, have trouble finding one that is large enough for your plus-size pooch, or you may simply want to avoid the wire-and-plastic aesthetic in lieu of something more tasteful.

But don’t worry — we’re here to help. There are a number of ways to make your own custom dog crate, and we’ll review several of the best options below.

1. Wooden Slat Dog Crate from MyOutdoorPlans.com

Dog crate DIY 4

This wooden design from My Outdoor Plans is fantastic for owners who want to make a simple and easy, yet attractive, wood dog crate from scratch.

Even relatively inexperienced woodworkers should be able to build this crate , and it’ll provide a great combination of ventilation and security for your pet through the wooden slat structure.

Difficulty Level : Easy

Tools Required :

  • Tape measure
  • Framing square
  • Cordless drill
  • Screwdriver
  • Safety gloves
  • Safety glasses

Dog crate DIY 5

This isn’t the same exact dog crate you’ll build from the plans above, but it’s pretty darn similar. Accordingly, it may help you figure out any tricky parts during the construction process.

2. DIY Wire Dog Crate from Cuteness.com

Dog crate DIY 6

If you would like to build a quick-and-easy dog crate and you care more about function than form, check out these wire dog crate plans from Cuteness.com.

These crates may not look any different than the typical ones you would buy at a pet store, but you can make your dog’s crate whatever size you like, and it won’t cost you very much to put it together.

  • Circular saw
  • Measuring tape
  • Four welded wire panels (including one that will function as a door)
  • Plywood for the base and roof

We can’t find a video of these exact plans coming to fruition, but here’s another concept also based around welded wire panels.

3. Furniture-Quality Dog Crate from This Old House

Dog crate DIY 7

If you want to make a custom dog crate, but you don’t want to settle for anything less than a true furniture-quality piece, these plans from This Old House may be perfect for you and your pup.

This is a pretty pricey project (it is estimated to cost about $300), so it isn’t a great option for all owners, and you’ll need some basic carpentry skills to pull it off (just check out that cut list below).

But, for those who choose to tackle this project, the final results are rather spectacular.

Don’t feel like doing it yourself? You can find similar furniture-style dog crates for purchase here .

Difficulty Level : Very hard

  • ½-inch plywood side panels – 2 @ 24 x 21 inches
  • ½-inch plywood back panel – 1 @ 18¼ x 21 inches

Dog crate DIY 9

We couldn’t find a video detailing the exact process by which you can make the crate described above, but the video below (filmed by a professional crate-building company) may help you figure things out.

4. Repurposed Crib Dog Crate from MyRepurposedLife.com

Dog crate DIY 15

Repurposing old furniture is a great way to give your dog a snazzy crate. You’ll not only help the planet a bit by getting a new use out of an old item, but it’ll save you a bit of time, effort, and money too.

These plans for a  dog crib crate from My Repurposed Life is great looking and fully functional – it should work just like a regular dog crate.

MyRepuprosedLive.com doesn’t provide exact plans for this project, as you’ll have to adapt the techniques and materials you use to suit the crib (or whatever item) you decide to turn into a crate. Accordingly, the materials and tools you’ll need will vary, and you’ll need to use your noggin to figure out the best way to finish the project.

Difficulty Level : Hard

  • Kreg jig ( A tool that helps you connect pieces of wood)
  • Right angle clamps

The materials you’ll need will vary, but, in this example, the designer used:

  • Several 2x2s
  • 1 ¼ -inch screws
  • Door hinges
  • Gorilla glue
  • Adhesive vinyl sheets
  • Four casters

Dog crate DIY 16

Of course, cribs aren’t the only thing you can repurpose and use for a dog crate. Here’s a video of an owner building a dog crate out of an old entertainment center!

5. DIY Table Cover for Crate from SnazzyLittleThings.com

Dog crate DIY 12

These plans don’t actually teach you how to build a crate; instead, Snazzy Little Things teaches you how to build an adorable kitchen table that goes over and around the crate.

This allows you to convert a boring old wire dog crate into an attractive piece of furniture. And because you’re really only building a table, this is a pretty easy and affordable project.

Note: You’ll need to check out this tutorial to learn how to finish the table as shown in the photo.

Difficulty Level : Easy to Medium

  • Tape measure (optional)
  • Pencil (optional)
  • Medium sized pet crate/kennel
  • Two tension rods fitting up to 36″ in length
  • Four 28″ table legs (prebuilt)
  • Five 1″ x 4″ pine boards for the tabletop
  • Cafe style curtains – any style

Dog crate DIY 14

We couldn’t find a video explaining how to make this project, but it is relatively straightforward and easy to complete by checking out the original plans.

If necessary, you can learn the basics of using a Kreg Jig in the video below. Many of the projects on this list will require you to use one, and they can be intimidating to wood-working novices.

6. End Table Kennel from Ana-White.com

Dog crate DIY 10

End table kennels are a great way to use one space for two different things, making them great for apartment dwellers and others living in cramped quarters. You can build them in a number of different ways, but they’re all end up being fairly similar.

We picked a relatively big and robust set of plans from Ana White , which should allow you to build a kennel big enough for a lab- or pit-bull-sized dog.

Difficulty Level : Medium

  • Speed square
  • Ear protection
  • One 24″ x 36″ Pine Project Panel or one sheet of 3/4″ plywood or MDF
  • Five 1×3 Boards, 8′ Long
  • One sheet of 1/4″ plywood
  • Four 1×2 Boards, 8′ Long
  • One set of hinges
  • One 1/4″ pocket hole screw
  • One box 7/8″ wood screws (or shorter)
  • Elmer’s Wood Glue
  • Elmer’s Wood Filler
  • 120 grit sandpaper
  • Wood conditioner

Dog crate DIY 11

This video doesn’t show you how to build the exact model detailed above, but it’s pretty close. Hopefully, this will help you get through the project easier.

7. Contemporary Geometric DIY Doghouse from Adorable-Home.com

Dog crate DIY 3

This set of plans from Adorable Home is really more of a cubby or bed than a true crate, as it lacks a proper door.

However, this thoroughly cool-looking dog crate with a modern design will look great in many homes and give your pup a comfy and hip place to chill. The original plans don’t call for paint, but we think it’d look even better with a bit of color (just be sure to let it air out for several days before letting your pup climb in).

This probably isn’t a great option for large dogs, as you’d have to make it much bigger than the plans recommend. This may require you to purchase thicker plywood, which would increase the cost of the project and make the finished product much heavier.

  • Paintbrush (if you intend to paint it)
  • One 4’ by 8’ sheet of ¼” plywood (get the plywood in birch, if possible)
  • Enough 2x3s and 2x2s to make the angled support blocks
  • Paint (if desired)

Dog crate DIY 1

Again, this isn’t really a crate per se, but it is a fun project that’ll give your dog a cozy little place to snooze.

General DIY Dog Crate Tips

No matter which of the plans you decide is right for your dog (or if you instead choose to design your own crate from scratch), you’ll want to embrace a few basic tips to help ensure things go as smoothly as possible.

→ Measure your dog carefully before deciding on a set of plans.

Crate size recommendations vary a bit, but most authorities recommend that you provide your dog with just enough room to lay comfortably, stand up and turn around.

You can get a good idea of the proper crate length by measuring the distance between the base of your dog’s tail and the tip of his nose and then adding 2 to 4 inches to the total.  Then, have your dog sit and measure the distance between the floor and the tippy top of his ears. Add 2 to 4 inches to this figure to obtain the appropriate height.

The width of the crate is correlated with the length. You can check out this chart from the Association of Professional Dog Trainers to see a few common sizes.

For example, most 24-inch-long crates are between 18 and 24 inches wide. Similarly, most 36-inch-long crates are 24 to 32 inches wide. Big crates, measuring 42 to 48 inches in length, are generally around 30 to 36 inches wide.

→ Gather everything you’ll need and set up a proper workspace before starting.

Proper preparation can mean all of the difference between a successful project and one that fails to come together. Make sure that you have everything you’ll need (it is very annoying to have to stop and head to the hardware store mid-project) before you make the first cut.

DIY dog crates

It’s also important to make sure you work in a safe, well-lit area – you will be dealing with power tools, after all. Hopefully, you’ll have a garage, workshop, or porch that’s already set up for the task.

And, for safety’s sake, be sure that you keep kids and pets out of the area once you start working.

→ Don’t hesitate to tweak the plans to suit your needs.

You can always make adjustments – especially adjustments involving the size of the crate — if the plans for a given crate don’t suit your needs. Go ahead and make the crate 6 inches wider or make the slats 2 inches farther apart, if need be. Just be sure to tweak all of the affected design components when doing so.

→ Always measure twice; cut once .

This is an old and oft-repeated bit of advice, but DIY novices should be sure to take the tip to heart. Failing to measure carefully will generally result in a ruined board and necessitate another trip to the hardware store.

Although this mantra is usually mentioned in reference to cutting wood, it applies to all materials.

→ Keep the crate’s location in mind when picking a plan.

To avoid serious headaches after completing the crate, make sure you think about the place you intend to put it.

You may, for example, need to make the crate a bit shorter to fit it into a nook in your kitchen, or you may need to reverse or reposition the door so that it opens in a sensible way for the location.

Don’t forget to think about things like windows, air vents, and electrical outlets when picking the space. You don’t want to design the crate to fit in a given area, only to find that the sun makes the location too hot, or the nearby AC vent is causing your pooch to shiver.

Have you ever built a crate for your dog? We’d love to hear all about it!  Let us know where you found the plans, tell us whether it was easy or difficult, and – most importantly – tell us whether you’d choose the same plans again.

I am thinking of making my own dog crate. But I don’t know the style that I want it! Then sell it to make some money.

Chris Berry Avatar

If we wanted to convert a entertainment center or a old chest of draw, what would be the dimensions we should be looking for to make it large enough for our two dogs?

Ben Team Avatar

Hey, Chris. It can be tricky to decide the ideal dimensions for a two-dog crate. But, as a starting point, I’d recommend picking a height and depth that would be appropriate for the larger of the two, and then doubling the width you’d use for a single dog. I’d likely add a little more “wiggle room” for a two-dog crate too. Best of luck!

Jay Avatar

I love these! The woodworker in me can’t wait to live in a place with space to do projects like these again. I think I will be trying to do one of the furniture style crates when I do.

Thanks for sharing!

Glad you liked the article, Jay! Be sure to send us photos when you make one of your own!

15 Custom DIY Dog Crate Plans For Dog Lovers

This post may contains affiliate links. If you click and buy we may make a commission, at no additional charge to you. Please see our disclosure policy for more details.

Investing in a good-quality readymade dog house or kennel can cost up to hundreds and even thousands of dollars. Apart from this enormous price tag, these houses are generally drab with not much of a creative touch.

Taking matters into your hand with the help of this guide will lead to a stunning end product. In addition to that, it will also be a fun project to undertake. Get your tool bags out and start cracking on one or more of these 15 custom DIY dog crate plans.

Table of Contents

1. DIY Console Dog Crate

We are starting the list with a very worthy contender. This DIY console dog crate is both fancy and functional. It blends in like a piece of furniture and can hold 2 dogs. However, you do need a few woodworking skills to execute this project to perfection.

The console can be customized to accommodate food and water bowls. There are also two additional drawers integrated into this design, equipped for holding other dog treats or toys.

To start, you have to cut the side frame pieces to size and drill 1.5-inch pocket holes in the two wooden sideboards. Then you should proceed to attach the side pieces to the top pieces with 2.5-inch pocket hole screws and wood glue. Repeat this step to build two frames for two dogs.

2. DIY Wire Mesh Dog Crate

This is a relatively simple project, even for beginners. All you need is an electric saw, a cordless drill, clamps, a hammer, and some measuring tape. Do not forget to get 4 welded wire panels as well.

To begin, measure the length of your dog while it is lying down and the height of it when standing. A helpful tip is to add 3 inches to this length and height for optimum comfort.

A wooden board is to act as the base of the crate. You can repurpose some scrap wood for this purpose, to cut down on the cost of the DIY plan.

3. DIY Wooden Slate Dog Crate

This is the best option for those who are looking for simple but durable custom DIY dog crate plans . It is recommended to invest in high-quality cedar or pinewood for durability purposes. The only downside is that it will increase the price of the project, but the end product will be well worth it.

Remember, it is necessary to drill pocket holes at the ends of the respective horizontal components. These are where the screws shall fit in. However, never add these horizontal components to the front face, in order to keep ample space for the main door.

This DIY plan features no elaborate decorative touches. The project focuses solely on building a sturdy home for your pet pooch that can be executed by inexperienced woodworkers too.

4. DIY Nightstand Dog Crate

These types of custom DIY dog crate plans are big enough to accommodate even German Shepherds or Mastiffs. Nightstand dog crates are a great way to use one space for two different applications. Thus, this makes them a viable option for apartment dwellers and others living in cramped quarters.

Try and finish the 4 walls of the crate separately first. Another idea is to use corner brackets to screw the walls together from the insides. This enables you to dismantle the wood structure and make it portable.

In the end, you can paint the dog crate to match the decor of your house or room. It will keep your pet friend close to your bed while sleeping, all while preventing messes and maintaining a safe environment. This idea is a definite must-try for all those looking to partake in a fun project as well as save up some space.

5. DIY Contemporary Geometric Dog Crate

This DIY plan is a sleeker, posher version of the good dog crate. If your house has more of a modern interior patio, you can build this contemporary geometric dog crate to complement it.

Start by cutting the plywood into 3 equilateral triangles to construct this design. Assemble the pieces by screwing the angled blocks to the plywood triangles. Proceed to screw all the pieces together.

The original plans do not call for paint, but a fresh coat of paint would bring a certain charm to this DIY idea. However, a significant downside to this plan is that the geometric shape can only support smaller dogs. To make a crate suitable for larger dogs, you’d need more plywood that would increase both the cost and weight of the project. Although the increased weight would make the dog crate susceptible to collapse.

6. DIY Plush Curtained Dog Crate

Dogs could do with some privacy as well, at least while sleeping. This inclusion in our list of DIY dog crate plans incorporates cushions and curtains to give your pet a plush experience.

For the tabletop , use five 1-inch x 6-inch pine boards and get the handy Kreg Jig to splice them together. Hang tension rods on the underside of the crate and then hang curtains on these rods. You ought to lay a small dog mattress over the wooden base to get your dog to be more comfortable.

Remember to invest in an osteopathic mattress if you have an older dog. You can finish off the top of the crate by staining it with a polish of your choice. This will create the perfect comfortable space for your pooch to rest in.

7. DIY Panelled Rustic Dog Crate

If you want a more antique looking dog crate that requires skill and time, this is the perfect option for you. This DIY dog crate plan requires serious craftsmanship and patience. Once your dogs are past the chewing phase, you can invest time in building this timeless masterpiece.

Suitable for even large breed dogs, this dog crate measures 21.5 inches high x 19.75 inches wide x 25 inches deep. The decorative grate can be made from scratch or bought from a local wood store.

Place the decorative grate on top of the doorframe so that it rests snugly inside the frame’s edges. Then flip the frame and grate over, so that the grate’s decorative side faces up within the doorframe. Finish the crate with a coating of shellac to bring out the grain of the wood. You can also add a cushion to help your pooch stay cozy inside the custom-built dog crate.

8. DIY Repurposed Crib Dog Crate

Cribs can be repurposed to make the best dog crates for accommodating larger dogs. The first step is to determine the crate size. Once the ends are cut to size, one has to proceed to make the sides.

The DIYer placed a crib rail over the end piece and added boards until she had what she wanted. She used the cut end to know how tall to make the sides since they need to be the same height. A Kreg Jig comes handy when it comes to drilling pocket holes, which is the next step.

Add pocket holes on the long pieces to attach the top and bottom boards. After the wood has been sanded down and painted over, the time comes to paint your new dog crate the color of your choice. Overall, this project is not difficult and is certainly worth a try for those wishing to utilize old items and create something new.

9. DIY Sliding Door Dog Crate

This is a viable option if you want to spruce up ordinary DIY dog crate plans. You can use a pair of drawer slides to be able to slide this entire section from side to side. If you are up for a challenge, you can even make the door out of ceramic.

However, this DIY dog crate plan does require a certain level of skill and expertise. Utmost flexibility is offered. For example, this particular DIYer did not add a latch to her crate but you can certainly do so.

If you are modifying the height of your crate, measure the overall height, and add 1 inch to the length for the front and back pieces. This will account for the height of the drawer slides in the next step. Moreover, it will give you 0.25 inches of wiggle room at the bottom so that the door doesn’t drag on the ground.

10. DIY Chic Furniture Dog Crate

Better-looking crates, ones that look like furniture can be purchased but they are typically less sturdy and not chew-proof. To add to this, they are also absurdly expensive. But this custom DIY chic furniture dog crate is budget-friendly and quite sturdy. It does not stand out as an eye-sore and promises to blend in with your room decor.

To start, get the wire crate, and build a simple frame and lid around it to give it a furniture-like aesthetic. This also adds tabletop functionality. The crate goes inside the wood frame, so the pooch never gets a chance to chew up the wood while they’re teething.

Keep in mind that when you get a puppy, you can partition the larger crate. This enables your pets to feel more snug and secure in a smaller space. You can also move the partition as your pup grows.

11. DIY Cardboard Dog Crate

This idea is best for kids and teens, looking to make something creative for their pet dogs. However, being a cardboard dog crate, it will not provide much durability or stability. Nonetheless, this DIY cardboard dog crate plan is a cheap, eco-friendly option.

For this project, you will need a cardboard box that is big enough for your dog. You will also need some duct tape, zip ties, scissors, or a serrated knife. For the screen, you can reuse the mesh from an old laundry bag.

It is essential to cut air holes in the cardboard crate to ensure optimal ventilation. You can cut these air-holes in various shapes, ranging from paw prints to simple circles. Overall, this DIY plan can make for a fun task for the kids, all while being somewhat utilitarian.

12. Triple Dog Kennel With Removable Dividers

If you have three dogs you’ll love to keep separately, try out this dog crate with three compartments. A fascinating feature of this God house is the removable dividers between each chamber. This feature means the three sections can easily be made into two or a single ample space by removing one or more walls.

Start by cutting the lumber to size with a miter saw before moving to the table saw to get the correct width for all the cut parts. The parts finally go through the miter saw again, but this time for the final and accurate cut. Building the face frame first will provide a guide to finish the other parts.

The next part to build in the series is the side panels and middle dividers before constructing the base frame. Ensure to use the router to create grooves on the insides of the side frames so the plywood boards can fit. This video plan contains all the building processes necessary to complete the triple dog kennel with removable dividers.

13. Double Dog Crate Cabinet

This design was built to fit a specific location with cabinet space, like under a large table. You can also use them as a stand-alone dog house, with the two crates offering enough space to house two dogs. This means the dimensions used in this plan were tailored to fit the available space, and you may want to measure the extent of your area.

Use a circular saw and a Kreg cutting guide to cut the plywood for the main cabinet section. The first part cut is the top panel before stripping the other pieces for the body. Use the miter or circular saw to cut down the boards and strips to the required length.

Assembling the pieces is more straightforward with the help of pocket holes. Pre-primed pine is the chosen board for the face frame and door frames since the crate will be painted after assembly. The choice of paint varies depending on your preference, but it is always best to use colors that will fit the area, especially if the crate will be going under a platform.

14. Well-Aerated Double Dog Kennel

Here is a well-aerated double dog kennel with enough space, with most sides fitted with steel bars for more ventilation. Use a table saw to rip the 1x8s into 1×3 boards, which are easy to handle. The idea of getting a beautiful dog crate is choosing the right wood side. Sides with clean and visible grain structures produce better results.

Like many other dog house projects with a clean design, pocket holes are recommended when assembling. Each frame is built separately and labeled to avoid joining mistakes that can disrupt the whole plan.

Spray paint all the steel rods before cutting them with a jigsaw. Drilling the holes on the frame sides can be tedious, but it gets better once you mark the center of the lumber and each point for drilling. Before assembling the other pieces, ensure you’ve added all the steel bars to one part of the frame.

15. Plywood Dog Kennel With Detachable Roof

One of the first questions you may have is about the durability of plywood for an outdoor dog crate. The answer is yes, provided you treat the plywood with a preserver to protect the surface and prevent moisture from soaking inside. This design uses thick hardwood plywood for the dog kennel.

The 18mm thick plywood means it is unnecessary to make an internal frame, making the project easier to complete. After gathering all the tools and materials listed in this guide, measuring and cutting each piece are the next steps. However, the crate’s size should depend on your dog’s size.

The detachable roof used for this project makes cleaning more manageable, primarily because the crate does not feature a window. The open door design provides ventilation and access to the space. You can add comfy blankets to make the area comfortable for your dog.

Dogs need their personal space too, where they can retire for the night, get warmth, and sleep undisturbed. The dog crate is often a simple house that can be placed indoors or outdoors. Selecting a dog crate to build depends on its location, the dog’s size, your building experience, and available materials.

  • Gather needed materials. See each specific plan for what you need to buy. Most can be built with items from Home Depot or local hardware stores.
  • Measuring tape
  • Table saw or hand saw
  • Drill with drill bits to start screw holes. In some designs you’ll need a hole saw drill bit but that isn’t needed for most.
  • Screwdriver attachments for your drill

The Top Designs and Youtube Videos

Easy to Medium

This gorgeous design uses a combination of pocket holes and rebar to fit 2x4s together. The top is a simple wood panel from Craft Master. While the pocket holes and the rebar work are a bit challenging, the overall design is based off simply 2×4 construction. Plus having a ready made wood panel for the roof saves time cutting, planing, and gluing a table top together.

Medium to Hard

This design is gorgeous as well but requires more advanced carpentry skills. If you build it as designed you’ll need a decent amount of equipment included planing equipment, table saws, sanding gear, and multiple drills for square holes and pocket holes.

You’ll also need to glue and form your own table top.

The design cheats a bit and uses plywood for the floor but it’s designed to mainly hide that feature.

Further down we show a method of using plywood for the roof then adding decorative wood slats to give it a better appearance without advanced carpentry skills required.

This is another medium plus carpentry project. Like the previous design this one requires you to be comfortable gluing and planing your own table top. We prefer the plywood with wood slat veneer method but to each their own.

What’s nice about this design is the simplicity of materials. It uses 10 pieces of rebar and a handful of 1x8s and 2x8s. Of course, the creator cuts those lengthwise into smaller pieces so some table saw work is required.

The creator also uses dowels to fill in the pocket holes at each joint. Pocket hole work and gluing joints is also required.

I love this design. It takes your existing dog crate then builds a decorative frame and table top around it. Then they add wheels so you can move it around easily.

While the concept is easy the methods used to build this require medium carpentry skills.

You could easily combine this idea with the method in the first video and build the same thing with 2x4s and premade wood panels to make this an easy job.

This design uses similar pocket hole and rebar methods to create the side bars. Some rust removal, painting, and staining is required.

Knowledge and tools of making pocket holes to attach the rebar is required.

Wall and door work requires gluing panels together and sanding them flat.

This design uses metal fencing pieces to build the bars of the crate. Depending on your skill with sizing and cutting metal fencing this could be an easy to medium task to build. The design uses plywood for the floor which is easier to acquire and put together than gluing 1x4s together as in the other examples.

The frame is made of 1x4s and the roof is also made of plywood. Most pieces are attached via screws without pocket holes.

Decorative wooden slats are attached on top of the plywood roof to give it a better look.

This is an excellent design for taller dogs like Great Danes. It’s not too difficult to put together. The solid panel walls are made of thin plywood that’s inset into frame pieces.

Again rebar is prepped and attached via pocket holes into the frame.

The roof is also made of plywood so gluing your own top panel isn’t required.

This model is only hard because of the detail. With 4 drawers this piece doubles truly as furniture for the room.

Because of the 4 drawers, inset rebar, and smooth polished top a good amount of work is required.

Choose this model if you want something large for multiple small dogs or if you want the extra drawers for storage.

You could make this a simpler job by taking out the drawers and using a simpler 2×4 frame as in the first design above.

This last design is great for adding extra comfort and security for your dog. Why? Solid walls help it feel more like a cozy cave to block distracting sights and sounds.

Wood dowels are used for the bars so these might not be the best for dogs that love to chew. Some pocket hole work is required to put them together.

The side panels and roof are made of plywood.

How to Choose the Right DIY Dog Crate Plan for Your Pet

When it comes to building a DIY dog crate, selecting the right plan is crucial for ensuring your pet’s comfort and the crate’s functionality within your home. Here are some helpful tips to guide you through the process:

Assess Your Space and Needs

  • Measure Your Available Space : Before you pick a plan, measure the area where you plan to place the dog crate. This will help you choose a design that fits well without cluttering your living space.
  • Consider Your Dog’s Size : Make sure the crate will be comfortable for your dog to stand, turn around, and lie down. Larger breeds will need more space than smaller ones.

Match the Crate to Your Decor

  • Design Aesthetics : Look for plans that complement your home’s interior design. Whether you prefer a modern, rustic, or minimalist style, there’s a DIY plan to match.
  • Dual-Purpose Functionality : If you want the crate to double as furniture, such as a side table or a nightstand, select plans that offer this feature without compromising on comfort.

Evaluate Your Skill Level

  • Simple vs. Complex Plans : Be realistic about your woodworking skills. If you’re a beginner, start with a simpler design. For those more experienced, you can opt for plans with advanced features.
  • Tool Availability : Ensure you have the necessary tools for the chosen plan. Basic plans might require simple tools, while more complex designs could need specialized equipment.

Safety and Comfort for Your Dog

  • Secure Construction : The plan should include a sturdy structure to keep your pet safe. Look for features like strong latches and durable materials.
  • Ventilation : Good airflow is essential. Choose designs that allow for enough ventilation to keep your dog comfortable.

Plan Your Budget

  • Material Costs : Calculate the cost of materials before starting. DIY crates can be budget-friendly, but it’s important to plan for all expenses to avoid surprises.
  • Quality vs. Price : Don’t compromise on quality for the sake of saving money. It’s important to use safe and durable materials for your pet’s crate.

Start Building

  • Gather Materials : Once you’ve chosen a plan, collect all the necessary materials and tools so everything is on hand when you start.
  • Follow Instructions Carefully : Read through the entire plan before beginning. Follow each step as directed to ensure a successful build.
  • Customize : Feel free to add personal touches, such as a favorite color paint or a comfy bed inside the crate for your dog’s comfort.

By following these guidelines, you’ll be able to choose and make the perfect DIY dog crate that suits both your needs and your pet’s, ensuring a practical and cozy addition to your home.

How to Make a Custom Wooden Dog Crate

Creating a custom wooden dog crate that suits your style and your furry friend’s needs doesn’t have to be daunting. With these easy-to-follow steps, you can build a comfortable and chic dog crate that doubles as furniture. Let’s get started!

Materials Needed:

  • Plywood sheets (size depending on the crate size)
  • Wooden dowels or metal bars (for crate sides)
  • Wood screws
  • Sandpaper (medium and fine grit)
  • Paint or wood stain
  • Hinges and latch
  • Tools: saw, drill, screwdriver, measuring tape, sander

Step 1: Measure Your Space and Dog

Before you start building, measure the space where the crate will be placed. Ensure it fits comfortably without obstructing pathways. Then, measure your dog’s height and length to make a crate that allows them to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably.

Step 2: Cut the Wood

Using the measurements you’ve taken, cut the plywood sheets to form the crate’s sides, top, bottom, and door. You can cut additional wood for decorative elements if desired.

Step 3: Assemble the Frame

Begin with the sides and attach them to the bottom piece using wood screws and glue for added stability. Make sure all edges are flush and square. Next, attach the top piece in the same manner.

Step 4: Add the Bars

Drill evenly spaced holes on the sides of the crate where you want the dowels or metal bars to go. Insert the dowels/bars and secure them with glue. This will ensure good ventilation and visibility for your dog.

Step 5: Sand the Wood

Once the basic structure is assembled, sand all surfaces with medium-grit sandpaper, followed by fine-grit to achieve a smooth finish. This step is crucial for your dog’s safety to remove any sharp edges or splinters.

Step 6: Paint or Stain

Apply your chosen paint or stain to the crate, making sure to cover all nooks and crannies for a professional finish. Allow it to dry completely before proceeding.

Step 7: Attach the Door

Using hinges, attach the door to the crate. Then, install a latch to keep the door securely closed. Make sure the door opens smoothly and that the latch is easy to operate.

Step 8: Add Finishing Touches

To make the crate cozy, add a soft bed or cushion inside. You can also add rubber feet to the bottom to prevent scratching your floors and to provide stability.

Congratulations! You’ve now created a unique and stylish wooden dog crate that provides a safe and comfy spot for your beloved pet while complementing your home decor.

Tips for Success:

  • Always prioritize your dog’s comfort and safety by avoiding toxic paints and ensuring adequate ventilation.
  • Customize the design to match your decor. Add trim or use a wood stain that complements your furniture.
  • Regularly inspect the crate for any signs of wear or damage to maintain a safe environment for your dog.

Step 1 - Construct the base of the dog crate

** FOR A LINK TO THE PRINTABLE PLANS CLICK THE "EXTRA" TAB AND FOLLOW THE LINK. The first step is to create the base of the crate. The outside pieces are 2x4 that we ripped to 3" wide each. Cut each of these to size with the ends being cut at 45˚ angles. Add two 1.5" pocket holes to the end of the two shorter pieces.

Simplify this with:

Kreg Pocket-Hole Jig

Step 1

Step 2 - Cut the base plywood to size and add pocket holes

Next, cut the base plywood piece to size and add 3/4" pocket holes around all sides.

Step 2

Step 3 - Attach shorter sides to the plywood

Attach the shorter sides to the plywood piece first. Add a line of wood glue and attach the sides through the pocket holes and into the frame using 1.25" pocket hole screws. Next, attach the longer sides also using wood glue and 1.25" pocket hole screws to create the frame around the plywood. You want the top of the plywood to be flush with the top of your frame.

Step 3

Step 4 - Connect corners using pocket hole screws

Attach the corners together now. Use 2" pocket hole screws through the angled pocket holes and into the adjoining corners.

Step 4

Step 5 - Build the back frame using 2x4 and 2x6 boards

Set the base to the side and begin building the frames of the crate next. Build the back frame first. The base and side pieces of this frame are 2x4" that we ripped to 3". The top board of the frame is a 2x6 board that we ripped to 4". Cut these to size and add 1.5" pocket holes to each end of both of your vertical pieces.

Step 5

Step 6 - Cut back plywood to size and add pocket holes

Cut the back plywood piece to size, and add 3/4" pocket holes around every edge.

Step 6

Step 7 - Attach vertical frame boards to plywood

Attach the smaller vertical frame boards to the plywood first. Add a line of wood glue to the end of your plywood and attach these boards through the pocket holes in the plywood and into each board using 1.25" pocket hole screws.

Step 7

Step 8 - Attach top and bottom pieces

Next attach the top and bottom pieces the same way using a line of wood glue in between the plywood and frame pieces and 1.25" pocket hole screws. Once those are attached, add 2.5" pocket hole screws through the vertical frame pieces and into the top and bottom frame pieces.

Step 8

Step 9 - Build the front frame using 2x4 and 2x6 boards

Now build the front frame. The bottom and vertical boards of this frame are also 2x4 boards ripped to 3", and the top board is a 2x6 ripped to 4" Add 1.5" pocket holes to each end of all 3 vertical boards. Add glue to each end.

Step 9

Step 10 - Attach vertical boards to the bottom frame

Attach the vertical boards to the bottom frame board using 2.5" pocket hole screws. These boards should line up flush with the ends of each horizontal board. The middle board will line up in the center of both sides.

Step 10

Step 11 - Attach top horizontal board

Now attach the top horizontal board using 2.5" pocket hole screws and wood glue through the vertical pieces and into the 4" wide board.

Step 11

Step 12 - Cut side pieces, add pocket holes

Cut the side pieces to 23". You will have 4 of these pieces, but they won't attach to anything until a later step. Add 1.5" pocket holes to the very top of the 4" wide boards and add 1.5" pocket hole screws to the very bottom of the 3" boards.

Step 12

Step 13 - Paint or stain wood assemblies

At this point, you need to paint or stain your wood assemblies. This will also include the 23" cuts you will use to create the sides of the crate. While that is drying, you can begin working on the metal bars that you will attach next. I used aluminum flat bar on this part. These came in 3/4" x 48" pieces. I used my jig saw with a metal blade to cut 14 bars at 23" long each. This bar cuts smoothly and quickly. I sprayed these bars with black satin spray paint before adding the holes in both ends of each bar. Use a cobalt drill bit to make these holes the fastest.

Step 13

Step 14 - Attach metal bars to wood pieces

Once all of your wood pieces are dry, create the side pieces. I attached my bars to the wood pieces using 1" self tapping black screws.

Step 14

Step 15 - Space metal bars 3" apart

I spaced the metal bars for the sides of the crate each 3" apart, starting 1.75" from the ends of each board. If you have a smaller dog, you can adjust the bar spacing to fit your needs!

Step 15

Step 16 - Attach side assemblies to the back

Once both side assemblies are built, attach them to the back of the crate using wood glue and 2.5" pocket hole screws. Everything should line up flush both on the sides and tops and bottoms.

Step 16

Step 17 - Add flat bars to the front assembly

Add the flat bars to front crate assembly next. These will attach to only one half of the front. I spaced these 3" apart and placed the outside bars 1.5" from the edges of the inside of the wood frame.

Step 17

Step 18 - Attach the front assembly to the dog crate

Attach the front assembly to the rest of the crate using wood glue and 2.5" pocket hole screws through the pocket holes in the side assemblies and into the front.

Step 18

Step 19 - Attach the upside-down base to the crate assembly

Now it's time for the base! flip the crate assembly upside-down. Run a line of wood glue around the crate assembly and place the base upside-down on top of it. Attach them by using 2.5" wood screws through the base and into the crate assembly all around.

Step 19

Step 20 - Create top planks from 2x6 boards

The planks for the top of the crate are 2x6 boards we ripped to 3 7/8" wide. Cut these to size and add 1.5" pocket holes down one side of 6 of the 7 boards. Place them side to side and attach using 2.5" pocket hole screws. This is a good time to stain or paint your top before attaching it.

Step 20

Step 21 - Glue and nail the top to the crate assembly

To attach the top, add glue to the top of the crate assembly and place the top on top of it. Make sure its equal all-around and nail it in place using 2" finish nails.

Step 21

Step 22 - Create and attach the door using 1/2" plywood

The final step is creating and attaching the door. I used a piece of 1/2" plywood cut to 15" x 22". You can have fun with this part! I used some barn wood left over from an old project I did and glued and nailed the planks to cover the plywood. You can also add decorative trim or whatever style you like... Just make sure you keep the door flush on front to accommodate the hardware.

Step 22

Step 23 - Attach barn door hardware to the door

I ripped 1x2 boards to 1" thick each. This barn door hardware will work with doors up to 1 1/8". I mitered the edges to 45˚ and attached them with wood glue and 1.25" brad nails. Make sure the front of the planked door is flush with the front of the 1x2 boards.

Step 23

Step 24 - Complete the dog crate with additional features

Here it is all finished! You can check our website www.shanty-2-chic.com for more info on the hardware! This set was only $35 and it really makes this crate. I also added a guide to the bottom and a lock for when my little fur baby starts using this. I linked to all of this as well as the universal pillow for the inside on our site, so be sure to check it out!

DIY dog crate for large breed dogs

Dog crates can be expensive and/or ugly. build your own diy dog kennel to suit your decor and size/breed of dog..

As you know, we adopted a puppy in April – Bentley, the most gorgeous puppy in the universe!

Granted a proud Mama, but he is spectacularly adorable.

The only thing with Bentley is that he is growing – A LOT.  At 5 months old he is already 45lbs (20kg) and seems to be on-track to be about 100lbs (45kg) as an adult.

No problems here, our last Old English Sheepdog was about 130lbs, so we love big dogs.  The problem is that he is still losing his puppy teeth and he eats EVERYTHING.  Shoes, cat toys, laundry, cat scratching post, his dog bed… there isn’t much that I haven’t pried out of his mouth over the past few months.

Because of this, we have kept him crated at night and when we aren’t around to supervise his “munchies”.

I bought the largest crate that the pet store had to offer when we first brought him home.  At the moment he can still stand and turn around in it, but not much else, so I was feeling guilty keeping him cooped up in it.

I decided to make my own super-sized dog crate so that when he does have to go inside to rest, he can at least roll over and move around.

I created my own building plans for a DIY dog crate for large breed dogs – and while I only use it for Bentley – it would easily fit two Goldens, labs, huskies, or other large breeds.

The open baskets on this console table are too much for Bentley.  He is forever pulling things off and chewing on wires, so this is the area I decided to build my DIY dog crate for.

diy dog travel cage

By building the DIY dog kennel long enough to protect the back of my sofa, I can keep toys from rolling underneath, doggie dirt and teeth from destroying the upholstery AND keep Bentley close to the family if we’re up late watching TV.

bare kitchen floor

I also planned to make my DIY dog crate without a bottom to it, so having it on the ceramic kitchen floor is perfect!  He loves the cool tiles and tends to sleep in the kitchen even when not crated, and I’ll be able to slide the kennel out of the way to wash the floor when needed.

DIY Dog Crate / DIY Dog Kennel

The measurements for Bentley’s crate were based on

  • deep enough to hold a crib mattress.  Still the best and cheapest (dogs loved used crib mattresses because they smell like babies and milk) dog bed you can get

long enough to protect the back of my sofa and side table and

tall enough for Bentley to stand in at full-size, but not necessarily be able to reach items on the top.

DIY dog crate, DIY dog kennel, make your own dog crate, how to make a dog crate, dog crate for large breed dogs

As you can see, it’s huge!

Bentley actually likes his crate; the breeder started crating him before we got him and he’ll snuggle in there without me having to drag him – so this will be a long-term furnishing.

DIY dog crate, DIY dog kennel, make your own dog crate, how to make a dog crate, dog crate for large breed dogs

One side of the crate base is taller than the other.  This is intentional so that the crib mattress will tuck neatly inside and the sides of it won’t be visible.

DIY dog crate, DIY dog kennel, make your own dog crate, how to make a dog crate, dog crate for large breed dogs

The building plans are fairly self-explanatory except to say that all of the wood for the sides of the DIY dog crate are 1″ (2.5cm) thick.  This is a bit tedious, but necessary because the bars for the DIY dog kennel are ¾” in diameter.

You can buy select grade wood at 1″ thicknesses, or do what I did and rip it down/ plane it down to thickness.

Because I was working with 2×4’s, it meant a fair amount of planing:

DeWalt planer and pile of shavings

Ripping the wood down on a table saw would have been faster, but I was using bits of crappy wood that I had stored in the garage and I wanted both sides of it to be smooth and clean.

Don’t worry, the shavings can be used in gardens, to make fire starters, or can be sent to a compost depot to decompose.

I’ll give you a little tip on how to install the bars for your DIY dog crate;  draw a line down the centre length of your boards.  Line the top and bottom of each section side by side and then measure out your spacing and mark BOTH boards at the same time.  This will ensure that the spacing of your bars is perfectly aligned between top and bottom.

The spacing of your bars is going to depend on the size of your dog; for Bentley, I was able to space them approximately 4 ½” apart without any worry that he would get his head stuck or be able to sneak out.  He’s 5 months old now, so if you are building this DIY dog kennel for a younger puppy, you might want your spacing closer together.

drilling holes for grates

I used a drill press and a ¾” spade bit to drill each hole.  You can certainly use a hand drill, but be careful with how much pressure you put on your drill or you could wrench your wrist if the bit grips.

using a drill press to drill holes

I drilled my holes roughly ½” down into each board, but to be sure I wasn’t caught short, I didn’t cut the kennel bars ( aluminum so they can be cut on a mitre saw ) until I had the parts dry fit together.

This is one side of my DIY dog kennel – with the 6″ base to hide the crib mattress.

dog crate side

And this is the other side where I went with a 2″ base to match the sides and top sections.

diy dog travel cage

All of the parts are held together with wood glue ( non-toxic ) and 1 ½” pocket screws on the back.

DIY dog crate, DIY dog kennel, make your own dog crate, how to make a dog crate, dog crate for large breed dogs

Once all of your parts are ready, you’ll probably want to put it together inside the house.

I used some pre-primed bead board as a backer for my DIY dog crate – mainly because I had a piece in the garage – but what I didn’t think about was how flexible it was…

building a dog kennel

To compensate, I ended up reinforcing the back of the beadboard/crate with ¾” plywood.

adding a back to your dog crate

I dropped the crib mattress inside the frame and then added a ¾” plywood top.  (I had pre-drilled pocket holes in the front and sides so that I could drill up into the top from inside the crate.

And yes, I (5’7″, 197lbs) fit inside the crate easily.

I added some edge banding to the plywood top and then sanded everything smooth with 120, 150, then 220 grit sandpaper and a random orbit sander.

If I was smart, I would have sanded the sections earlier BEFORE installing the bars. 🤦🏻‍♀️.  Do as I say, not as I do.

I built the DIY dog crate gate last to make sure that I had ¼” spacing all around.

I might leave the crib mattress out for the summer since Bentley loves the cool floor so much.  Alternatively, I could put a small piece of carpet in there to keep the tiles soft, but not trap the heat as much as the mattress does.

Pulling the mattress out is as easy as tilting the crate and sliding it out from underneath for easy cleaning.

I love that the door folds back in on itself so it isn’t in the way when the kennel is open.

On top of his crate I have a few jars of his treats out, but that he can’t actually reach.

If this is a bit large for your space, or you aren’t up for the build, and are wondering;

“What can I use instead of a dog crate?”

A crib will work.  Playpen, baby gates, or an exercise pen are also great options.  Just make sure that there is LOTS of air circulating through.

Where should you place your dog crate?

Make sure your DIY dog crate isn’t placed in a drafty area.  You’ll want to avoid direct sunshine, heating vents, radiators and anything else that will make the space too hot or too cold.  We keep our crate in our kitchen, which is open-concept to our family room – so the centre of the house.

At what age do dogs stop sleeping in a crate?

Most dogs will use their crate long after the puppy phase is over.  Having a crate gives your dog a bedroom that he/she can go into for sleep and solitude and quite often it is a place of comfort for them.  You can keep your DIY dog crate forever, and just stop latching the door once the dog gets past the peeing/chewing stages and can be trusted not to damage property or themselves when alone.  ( I’ve read this is around 2 years of age )

Is it cruel to crate a dog?

Not if you use it as a source of comfort and protection for your dog and as long as the majority of the time they are not locked up.  Crate training actually gives dogs a sense of security and comfort in a “den”.  Having written that, your DIY dog kennel should NOT be used as punishment or to keep your pet for extended periods of time.  Bentley is only crated at night or if we have to leave the house and can’t supervise his activities – a few hours at most.  Make sure your pet has had the opportunity to pee/poo before crating them, and listen to their cues if they need outside.  Bentley likes to pee again at 5am, so he lets me know with a quiet bark to get my ass out of bed.

If you make your own DIY dog crate PLEASE send photos!  I’d love to see how happy your fur-babies are in their new bedroom!

Have a great one!

Should you use a crate for your dog.

Deciding whether or not to use a dog crate is an important consideration for every pet owner. While dog crates can be valuable tools for various purposes, they may not be the right fit for every dog or lifestyle. Here are some factors to help you make an informed decision:

1. Benefits of Using a Dog Crate

First, understand the benefits of using a dog crate. Crates can aid in house training, as dogs naturally avoid soiling their sleeping area. They also provide a safe space for your dog to retreat to when they need some downtime or want to feel secure. Crates can be helpful for managing destructive behavior, separation anxiety, and travel. Additionally, they can prevent your dog from accessing dangerous areas or items in your home when you cannot supervise them.

2. Consider Your Dog’s Personality and Needs

Every dog is different, so consider your dog’s personality and specific needs. Some dogs may love having a crate as their den and feel comfortable in it, while others might feel anxious or stressed when confined. Observe your dog’s behavior and temperament to determine if a crate could be a positive addition to their routine.

3. Training and Gradual Introduction

If you decide to use a crate, proper training and a gradual introduction are crucial. Make the crate inviting and ensure your dog associates it with positive experiences. Avoid using the crate as a form of punishment, as this can create negative associations and make crate training less effective.

4. Lifestyle and Schedule

Evaluate your lifestyle and daily schedule. If you are often away from home for extended periods or have limited time for training and bonding, a crate might not be the best option. Dogs are social animals and require companionship, so consider if your lifestyle allows you to spend enough quality time with your pet.

5. Alternative Solutions

If a crate doesn’t seem suitable for your dog, explore alternative solutions. Baby gates, playpens, or designated dog-proof areas in your home can serve similar purposes, providing a safe and confined space for your dog without the use of a crate.

6. Consult with a Professional

If you are unsure about crate training or have concerns about your dog’s behavior, consider consulting with a professional dog trainer or veterinarian. They can provide personalized guidance based on your dog’s specific needs and help you make an informed decision.

Ultimately, the decision to use a dog crate should prioritize your dog’s well-being and comfort. By carefully considering your dog’s needs, lifestyle, and temperament, you can make the right choice that fosters a positive and happy environment for both you and your beloved furry companion.

The 17 Best Durable Dog Beds

Choosing the best dog crate for your dog.

When picking out a dog crate, there are several important factors to consider to ensure you choose the best option for your furry friend:

The crate should be spacious enough for your dog to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably. Measure your dog’s height and length to select an appropriately sized crate.

2. Breed and Age

Consider your dog’s breed and age when choosing a crate. Puppies may need a smaller crate initially and then transition to a larger one as they grow.

3. Material

Crates are available in various materials, such as metal, plastic, and wood. Each material has its pros and cons, so choose one that suits your dog’s needs and your home environment.

Determine the primary purpose of the crate. Is it for house training, providing a safe space, or for travel? Different purposes may require different crate designs and features.

5. Portability

If you travel frequently or need a crate for outdoor activities, consider a portable and lightweight option that is easy to transport.

Ensure the crate has secure latches and doors that won’t accidentally open, and there are no sharp edges or parts that could harm your dog.

7. Ventilation

Look for crates with sufficient airflow to keep your dog comfortable, especially during warmer months.

8. Easy to Clean

Choose a crate with removable trays or washable materials to facilitate cleaning and maintain hygiene.

9. Durability

Opt for a sturdy and durable crate that can withstand your dog’s activity level and won’t be easily damaged.

10. Comfort

Consider adding a comfortable bed or cushion inside the crate to make it inviting and cozy for your dog.

11. Training and Behavioral Needs

If your dog has anxiety or specific behavioral issues, certain crate designs, such as covered or den-like crates, may be more suitable.

Determine your budget and explore options within that range. Keep in mind that quality and safety are essential factors regardless of the price.

By carefully considering these aspects, you can select a dog crate that provides your furry companion with a secure and comfortable space they’ll love to call their own.

How to Calm a Dog Down

Basic crate training tips.

Crate training can be a beneficial and effective way to provide your dog with a safe and secure space while also aiding in house training and behavior management. Here are some basic crate training tips for dogs:

1. Introduce the Crate Gradually

Start by introducing the crate in a positive and gradual manner. Place the crate in a quiet and accessible area of your home, and leave the door open so your dog can explore it at their own pace.

2. Make the Crate Inviting

Make the crate a comfortable and inviting space by adding a soft bed or blanket inside. You can also place some treats or toys in the crate to encourage your dog to enter willingly.

3. Use Positive Reinforcement

Whenever your dog enters the crate voluntarily, praise and reward them with treats or verbal praise. Positive reinforcement will create a positive association with the crate.

4. Keep it Short and Positive

In the beginning, keep the crate sessions short and positive. Gradually increase the time your dog spends in the crate, making sure to keep it a positive experience throughout.

5. Never Use a Crate as Punishment

Avoid using the crate as a form of punishment. The crate should be a positive and safe space for your dog, not associated with negative experiences.

6. Establish a Schedule

Create a consistent schedule for crate time, especially for house training. Take your dog out for potty breaks before and after crate time to reinforce good bathroom habits.

7. Avoid Excessive Use

While crate training can be helpful, avoid keeping your dog in the crate for extended periods. Dogs need social interaction and exercise, so provide regular playtime and walks outside the crate.

8. Ignore Whining

It’s common for dogs to whine initially when crate training. Avoid giving in to the whining, as this may reinforce the behavior. Instead, wait for a moment of quiet and then reward your dog for being calm.

9. Stay Calm and Patient

Crate training may take some time, depending on your dog’s age and temperament. Stay patient and avoid getting frustrated. With consistency and positive reinforcement, most dogs adapt well to crate training.

10. Gradual Alone Time

If you plan to use the crate for short periods when you’re away, practice leaving your dog alone in the crate for a few minutes at a time, gradually increasing the duration. This will help your dog get used to being alone in the crate without anxiety.

Remember that crate training should be a positive experience for your dog. With patience, consistency, and lots of positive reinforcement, your furry friend will likely come to love their crate as a safe and cozy den.

DIY Dog Crate Tips

Building your own dog crate is a great way to save money and show off your personality and style. But before you get started, there are a few DIY tips you should keep in mind.

This is especially important if you are building a custom crate. You’ll want to make sure that your pup has plenty of room to move around and be comfortable. For instance, a crate that is too small may cause your dog to feel cramped and uncomfortable.

beagle inside a crate

Furthermore, you’ll want to make sure that your dog cannot escape from the crate. To do this, measure the height, width, and length of the opening of the crate and compare it to your dog’s measurements.

Once you have the measurements for your crate, it’s time to gather the necessary tools and materials. Make a list of everything you’ll need so that you can easily check off each item as you gather it. This will help to ensure that you have everything you need before you get started.

In addition, if you are working with a tight budget, try to find materials that are affordable and easy to work with. Pallets, for instance, are a great option for those on a budget.

Before you start building your dog crate, be sure to set up the environment correctly. Firstly, make sure that you have plenty of space to work, and be aware of any potential hazards (e.g. power tools).

If you are using a saw or drill, be sure to wear the appropriate safety gear. And always read the instructions carefully before using any power tools.

Secondly, be sure to have all of your materials within reach so that you don’t have to stop in the middle of the project to get something.

Finally, be sure to have a trash can and a place to put all of the screws, nails, and other debris that may accumulate as you work.

When building your own dog crate, it’s important to put your own touch on it. But always remember to measure twice before cutting. This will help to ensure that your pup has a safe and comfortable space.

It can be easy to get carried away with all of the different design options, but always remember to put function over form. After all, you want your dog to be safe and comfortable in his or her new home.

In particular, pay close attention to the door and make sure that it is secure. You may want to consider adding a latch or lock to the door to prevent your dog from escaping.

People Also Ask

There are several different things you can use instead of a crate, such as a kennel, dog pen, or baby gates. However, not every option is right for every dog. Be sure to do your research and find the option that is best for your pup.

First, you’ll need to measure your dog and the space you have available. Then, gather the necessary tools and materials. Once you have everything you need, set up the environment and put your own touch on the crate. Remember to always measure twice before cutting.

No, it is not cruel to keep a dog in a crate. In fact, crates can provide dogs with a safe and comfortable space. However, it is important to make sure that the crate is the right size for your dog and that the door is secure. Also, be sure to provide your dog with plenty of exercise and time outside of the crate.

When it comes to building a dog crate, there are many different options to choose from. But always remember to put function over form. In other words, make sure that your dog has plenty of room to move around and be comfortable.

Be creative, but always measure twice before cutting. This will make it uniquely yours and your dog will love it!

You don’t have to spend a lot of money on a commercial dog crate. With a little bit of effort, you can easily build your own dog crate that is both stylish and functional.

Not only will these DIY dog crate ideas save you money, but they will also show off your personality and style. So get creative and start building!

What is your favorite DIY dog crate? Will you ever consider building one?

If you’re fed up with ugly dog crates that just don’t go with your furniture, why not take matters into your own hands with a bit of DIY? With a simple dog crate and a few basic materials, you can make your own dog crate table, add a cozy, stylish touch to your dog’s chillout area, and really make the most of the space you have.

We’ve scoured the web for the best DIY dog crate tables, and we hope you leave feeling crafty and inspired! Please refer to the plans linked in each description for the specifics regarding materials, tools, and full instructions on how to complete each project.

Top 13 DIY Dog Crate Table Plans

1. easy build diy dog crate side table by the palette muse.

This cute, simple dog crate side table is perfect for small dogs that enjoy sleeping in your bedroom. The table is made to fit over the crate rather than being attached to it, which makes it easy to move around and rearrange whenever you feel like it. If you don’t feel like using tools to put everything together, a (very lazy) solution is to simply buy a table that fits over your crate!

2. Large DIY Double Dog Kennel from Build Blueprint

If you’re a multiple-dog household and need something a little larger that looks classy instead of bulky, we recommend this double dog kennel for large dogs. This one may be a little hard for beginners, but if you’re patient and don’t mind spending a bit of time on a project, why not give it a go? If it’s a bit much for you, though, keep reading for simpler options.

3. DIY Dog Kennel Cover by DesignCo

For those with a hefty tool set already on hand, this simple design turns a boring dog crate into an elegant coffee table. We’d recommend this project for intermediate and advanced DIY-ers that don’t mind a bit of a challenge, as it’s pretty equipment heavy but the end product is definitely worth it.

4. DIY Wooden Dog Crate Cabinet by Woodshop Diaries

For medium-sized dogs, you might want to consider making this cabinet crate , the top of which can be used as a table to put your bits and bobs on. This cabinet fits in beautifully as a piece of furniture with its warm, modern appearance. It offers plenty of space for medium-sized dogs (or even large dogs, if you’re happy to change up the dimensions) in need of something a bit roomier.

5. DIY Dog Crate Cover by Heather’s Handmade Life

This sweet dog crate cover doubles up as an end table for you to pop your cup of tea or a book on while your dog snoozes. It looks like the perfect size for a small-sized dog (it was originally made for a Boston Terrier) but could certainly be adapted for larger dogs. The creator didn’t adhere to strict measurements, so if going with what works well at the time is more your style, this could be just the DIY project you’re looking for!

6. Tasteful DIY IKEA Bench Dog Crate from IKEA Hackers

If you aren’t that hot on DIY, you can minimize the hassle with a  ready-made IKEA bench . This Ikea bench was made into a dog crate for a small dog, measuring around 20 inches at the shoulder. We couldn’t find specifics as to the tools needed for this project, but judging by the picture, it doesn’t seem like you’d need too many.

7. DIY Barn Door Dog Crate by Shanti 2 Chic

This cozy dog crate is a great idea for medium to large-sized dogs. Instead of using a standard metal crate, this crate is made from scratch from plywood and leftover barn wood. If you’re up for a bit of a challenge, the end result is truly beautiful. We love the rustic-style door that gives it such a cozy, comfortable vibe.

8. DIY Dog Crate with Sliding Door by Woodshop Diaries

As adaptable as wire crates are, they do have an unmistakable “prison” look about them. If you’d like something that doesn’t feel so “shut up”, this awesome DIY dog crate utilizes a sliding door instead. It doesn’t appear to be the easiest crate to make, but it doesn’t require any hard-to-come-by materials and is put together with a few simple tools.

9. DIY Crib Dog Crate by My Love 2 Create

If your dog is medium-large in size, repurposing an old crib as this creator did is a great way to give them the space they need. By covering the top with wood, it can double up as a shelter for your dog and a tabletop. It clearly takes quite a bit of time to put everything together, so this DIY dog crate may be best for an experienced crafter.

10. DIY IKEA Dog Cage Table by IKEA Hackers

Another great design by IKEA hackers, this IKEA table was jazzed up with a few lattice pieces, some magnets, and some hot glue. We’re seriously impressed by how the creator managed to turn a drab black metal crate into a classy piece of furniture with only a few simple tools and materials. We think this one should be fine for beginners and intermediate DIY-ers.

11. DIY IKEA Furniture Dog Crate System by IKEA Hackers

Here’s another IKEA hack! This one is so simple that you may not need any extra tools or materials other than the desks and some standard dog crates. The construction appears to be as simple as popping the crates under the desks and kitting them out to make your dog comfortable. This is a great option for people who aren’t too comfortable with DIY but want a simple way to hide ugly crates around their homes.

12. Large DIY Wood Pet Kennel End Table by Ana White

Ana White has some amazing DIY projects, and this large wood pet kennel end table is one of her best. This is a DIY dog crate table for large dogs and needs a large space in your home to accommodate it. It’s also suggested that this could be a dog crate table for several smaller dogs that get along well or for a litter of puppies. This will likely take at least a weekend or two, but the results are attractive and practical. When finished, the crate table can be placed anywhere your dogs like to relax, sleep, and de-stress.

13. DIY Dog Crate Console by Shanty 2 Chic

Made for two smaller dogs, this DIY dog crate console by Shanty 2 Chic is, in a word, fantastic! Not only will you have two dog crates for your small dogs and a large table to display pictures, tchotchkes, and other items, but they also have three drawers. The bottom drawer is also made to hold two dog bowls, which is incredibly practical. This is a moderate to high difficulty level project that will demand a decent DIY skill set. As for tools, however, most are common in an average person’s tool shed or garage.

If you don’t mind spending a bit of time on a DIY project and enjoy a challenge, building a DIY dog crate table from scratch is likely more up your alley. If you’re looking to get started in DIY, there are plenty of easy DIY table crates that require minimal materials and tools.

For DIY-phobes who like to keep things as simple as possible, you can always go the easy route with a piece of—usually IKEA—furniture and place your dog’s crate inside it!

Whichever option you choose, we hope you’ve enjoyed perusing the amazing works of the very talented creators above and have found some inspiration for your dog crate table project.

It’s also quick and easy to assemble when you get to your destination (I found this very handy), making it a great home-away-from-home for your pup.

This dog cage is made from durable and robust material, making it safer if used during travel. There’s even a dual latch on larger crate sizes to provide extra security for stronger dogs.

The crate comes in a range of sizes to suit all breeds and has a removable divider panel you can use when your dog is a puppy, so the crate can grow with them (see also ‘ The Ultimate Dog Crate Sizing Guide ‘). It comes at a very reasonable price.

  • Strong enough for most dogs who are crate trained
  • Owners found it was easy to fold down and put back up, making it great for travel
  • 2 doors provide easy access and more options for positioning, which owners felt was handy during travel and when positioning the crate in the home

  • Owners stated that they felt this crate was of great value
  • Not suitable for escape artists, as some owners found their determined dog could get out of the crate
  • Not strong enough for very destructive dogs, who can chew and break the crate

Things to Look for in a Travel Dog Crate

When you’re looking for the best travel dog crate for your pup, it’s crucial you keep a few things in mind to help you make the safest, most suitable choice for you and your dog.

Fit for Purpose

If you’re going to be carrying the crate with you to use as your dog’s ‘bedroom’ away from home, a foldable lightweight crate will be best.

If you’re searching for the best dog crate for car travel, you need to think about how safe and secure your dog will be in the crate, as well as how you will fit and secure the crate into your car. Often plastic or wire crates are the best choice for car travel.

If you’re looking for the best dog crate for airline travel, the type of crate you need will depend on whether your dog will be in the cabin with you or in the cargo hold.

If your dog is in the cabin, a smaller, softer crate may be better. If they’re in the cargo hold, a sturdy, solid crate to keep them safe from being bumped around would be best.

Each airline has individual regulations and rules about which carriers they will allow onboard, so vital to check those requirements specifically.

If you’re going to be traveling by air with your dog a lot, it’s a good idea to look for crates that state they are ‘Airline Approved’ or ‘Guaranteed On Board’.

Furthermore, pet safety crash testing is also an important factor to consider, as these tests can guarantee the safety of your pet in the event of a car accident.

Most car crates proudly display their Center for Pet Safety certification, which is a good sign that the crate has undergone rigorous testing. Ultimately, you should feel confident knowing your pet is safe, secure, and comfortable in its crash-tested crate.

High-Quality Materials

Choosing a crate made with high-quality materials means it’s likely to be safer, as well as more sturdy and secure. It also means the crate is likely to last longer and stand up to wear as you go on adventures with your pup.

Correct Size for Your Dog

It’s vital to choose a crate that is the right size for your dog. Ideally, you should measure your dog:

  • from their nose to the base of their tail, and add 3 to 4 inches for the length of the crate
  • from the top of their head or ears to the floor, and add 3 to 4 inches for the height of the crate
  • across their shoulders and multiply by two for the width of the crate

Your dog should always be able to stand up fully, turn around comfortably, and stretch out in their crate, but not be able to walk around.

Correct Strength for Your Dog

Think about how strong you need the crate to be for your dog. If your dog is smaller or generally calm when they’re in its crate, a soft-sided crate might be suitable.

If your dog is bigger and typically chews their crate or tries to escape, a solid plastic or metal crate will be better suited.

Secure Closure

Any crate you choose should have a secure closure to keep your dog safely inside the crate during travel (see also ‘ How To Secure A Dog Crate In A Car ‘).

A zip or small lock may be enough for some dogs, while escape artists may need double, reinforced locks. It’s also essential that the seat belt in the car should be securely attached to the crate.

Easy Entry and Exit

Think about how your dog will enter and exit the crate. Some crates have multiple doors to make things easier.

Good Air Flow

A crate must have good ventilation. Wire crates typically have a lot of ventilation. Look for ventilation holes in the side of plastic crates and mesh windows on soft-sided crates.

Easy Cleaning

There’s no denying that dogs can make a mess. If you’re traveling, particularly if your dog is nervous, it might have an accident. Choosing a crate that is easy to clean will be helpful and more hygienic.

Some crates will have removable or washable linings. Others may be easy to wipe down. Some are ‘potty proof’, meaning there’s a pull-out area under the crate that easily pulls out so you can clean it, or you could add a puppy pad to the pull-out area during travel to absorb any accidents.

Comfort for Your Dog

Of course, it’s crucial your dog feels comfortable. Choosing a crate that is the right size with good ventilation is key for this. You can also add in a comfortable bed, blankets, crate-safe toys and chews, and water.

Ease of Storage

If you’re going to be storing the crate when you aren’t traveling, think about how much room you have. A crate that folds down may be more suitable.

Portability

Consider the weight of the crate as well as how easy it is to carry. Some will be more lightweight, may fold down, and may even have handles to make lifting them easier. The best heavy-duty dog crates may have wheels to help you move them.

Why You Might Buy a Travel Dog Crate

Just like people, when dogs are traveling by air or by road, they need to be secured safely to protect them in case of an accident. A crate can be a great way to keep your dog safe.

If you use a crate at home, your dog can see it as their ‘bedroom’ or safe space. Often when dogs travel in a crate or use it as a place to sleep while on holiday, it keeps them calmer and happier because they see the crate as a positive place.

The Importance of Crate Training

It’s crucial that your dog sees their crate as a safe place. This means you need to crate train your dog before you use a travel crate (see also ‘ Dog Crate Training Pros & Cons (Is It Really Necessary?) ‘).

Do your research if you’ve never crate trained before; there are lots of great guides online.

Some general crate training tips are included below:

  • Get your dog used to their crate for a while before you plan on traveling.
  • Never use the crate as a punishment, only as a positive place.
  • Use lots of treats and praise to encourage them and make training fun.
  • Never force your dog into the crate; encourage them to enter on their own.
  • Start your dog off with being in the crate for short periods while at home and gradually increase the time as they get more comfortable.
  • Use long-lasting treats or crate-safe toys while they’re in the crate to make it fun.
  • Make their crate a comfortable, cozy place by using things like bedding and blankets.

Travel Dog Crate Safety Advice

Always choose a crate the correct size for your dog and ensure it’s sturdy enough for your purposes. Always secure the crate correctly during traveling. It’s crucial to make sure your dog can’t escape from the crate to keep them safe.

Travel Dog Crate FAQ

Can dog crates be too big.

Yes, a crate that’s too big can be dangerous, especially when traveling. Choosing the correct size of crate for your dog is crucial.

Is it really safe for your dog to travel in a crate?

Yes, the right crate can help to keep your dog safe during travel.

Do dogs prefer wire or plastic crates?

Dogs have preferences just like humans, but in general, a dog won’t mind what kind of crate they’re in as long as it’s cozy and comfortable and they are crate trained.

Finding the right travel dog crate can keep your pup safe and happy during travel, allowing you both to enjoy your adventures together. The world is yours to explore!

Making your dog’s crate escape-proof isn’t difficult – here’s how

Try these tips to beef up your dog's crate and keep them inside safely.

Is your pup an escape artist when it comes to their crate ? While it can be maddening to return home to an empty crate, a guilty dog, and a shredded sofa, an escape attempt can also be dangerous for your dog. Military-grade dog crates may seem like the only recourse for your little Houdini, but (almost!) any crate can be made escape-proof.

Can I lock my dog in a crate?

Reinforce weak spots, crate train your dog, keep your dog entertained, what you need.

Dog blankets

Crate cover

First, let's cover how your crate should eventually be used. Many dogs will grow to love their little den, and go there completely unprompted. But that takes time and dedication (we'll cover how to crate train them below). During toilet training, you'll likely need to keep your puppy in the crate to prevent accidents and teach him how to potty outdoors.

After the training period is over, some pet parents opt to keep their pup in the crate when out of the house and overnight (many dogs will stay there on their own and don't need to be locked in). This works especially well if your animal is prone to destruction or anxiety. Others decide to retire the crate and set up another spot for Fido. The important thing to remember: Never use the crate as punishment or correction. It's a safe space for your dog.

Most dog crates are collapsible for easy transport and storage. However, what makes them convenient can also make them weak. The walls and floor are often your dog’s first point of attack, and the latches that you thought were sturdy can turn out to be child’s play for a determined Fido. But there are a few things you can do to fortify these problem areas.

Step 1: Strengthen the walls.

Grab some zip ties and attach them to each corner, taking care to trim the tie short enough that your pup isn’t able to chew them.

Step 2: Toughen up the floor.

Drill small holes on the corners of the plastic tray and attach zip ties, again taking care to trim the tie.

Step 3: Add padlocks.

Purchase a small padlock and add it to the latch if your little escape artist has figured out how to open his door. Be sure to keep the padlock keys in an easily accessible and memorable place.

Proper dog crate training is one of the most important steps in ensuring crate safety. If your dog has never encountered a crate before, don’t just lock them in with a treat and disappear. Imagine if you were left in a cramped, unfamiliar place that you knew nothing about.

Sounds frustrating, doesn’t it? Your dog feels the same way! There are countless articles, books, and videos that break crate training down into easily manageable tasks, so pick one that you’re comfortable with and get to work!

Step 1: Introduce the crate.

Start by offering treats in and around it, progressing to feeding meals in the crate. That will make him excited to go into his little cage because he associates it with food.

Step 2: Practice locking the crate.

Then retreat to another room before you return and open it. Start by leaving for under a minute and build up in small increments. Eventually, you'll be able to go for long periods without any fuss.

Step 3: Make the crate a retreat.

Dogs are den animals. They crave small, dark, comfortable places to relax, de-stress, and sleep. Your dog’s crate should be their den. Line the floor with a soft blanket or a shirt with your scent.

Step 4: Dim the lights.

Consider purchasing a crate cover to create a more den-like environment. Towels or blankets are good substitutes and provide the same function. If your dog comes to see his crate as his space, he'll be more likely to seek it out for his own comfort, making him less likely to hatch an escape plot.

Some dogs escape their crates simply because they’re bored. You wouldn’t want to be confined to a small space with nothing to do for hours — and your pup wouldn’t want that, either. If you’re sure that your dog will not destroy them, try to include some of their favorite toys. Squeaky toys can make for a fun distraction, and rubber toys can help alleviate the desire to chew on less desirable things, like the dog crate itself.

Many pet owners find that a frozen treat provides hours of distraction. Simply freezing yogurt, peanut butter, canned pumpkin, or other dog-friendly treats in a rubber chew toy can give your dog with enough entertainment to make their time in their crate more desirable. A distracted pup is a happy pup!

Making your dog’s crate escape-proof doesn’t have to be an expensive endeavor. Simple reinforcements will ensure that almost any crate can take a beating without giving way. Crate training your dog, making the crate a desirable retreat, and entertaining your dog while in their crate can go a long way in making any crate escape-proof, as they simply won’t want to leave. Following these tips just may make your little Houdini hang up their cape! If you want to know more, you can check our different ways on how to puppy proof an apartment .

You hoped your dog "dug" their bed when you spent hours researching the top brands with the comfiest products. Maybe your pooch took to their bed immediately — success. Alternatively, perhaps they decided your bed was a better fit, and you chose to roll with the choice. Regardless of which option you two settled on, you may notice your pet has an interesting bedtime and naptime routine: digging into their beds.

The digging is usually accompanied by some walking around in circles, nosing at the bed or any blankets, and repeating until they finally settle down and enjoy some sweet slumber. Why do dogs dig on the bed, though?

Virtually every dog barks every now and again, but sometimes that barking can get to be too much. It's easier to address excessive barking when you can figure out what your dog is trying to tell you or alert you of, but dog owners know it's not always obvious. In fact, it can be a bit unnerving when your dog is barking at an empty wall.

You're certainly not alone if you find yourself asking, "Why is my dog barking at nothing?" This is a common question among dog owners, and it's something that veterinarians and animal behaviorists have studied as well. There's usually a reason behind dogs' barking, after all, so it's worth looking into to make sure your furry friend is alright.

It can be terrifying to find out your dog swallowed something they shouldn’t have — whether they got into the Halloween candy or scarfed down something inedible — but learning how to make a dog throw up can turn a scary situation into a close call. First things first, you should always reach out to your veterinarian if you suspect your pup ingested a foreign object. Then, you can take advantage of one of these at-home techniques for inducing vomiting if your vet gives you the go-ahead.

10 Dog Crate Ideas That Actually Look Good in Your Home

Up your crate expectations with these inspiring ways to work your dog’s kennel into your home's decor.

Samantha Thorpe is a lifetime pet-lover (dogs, cats, hamsters, and bunnies). Right now she's getting her steps in by taking her foxhound-beagle, Zippy, on long walks. Zippy is also Samantha's favorite coworker while she's working on home, garden, and lifestyle stories as a freelance writer and editor.

Your pooch loves you and wants to hang out with you—sometimes even more than your kids do! But putting your pup's plastic-and-wire kennel in a main room of your house may not be the decorating vibe you're going for. It's time to give your dog's space a crate facelift with one of these kennel decorating ideas that even your pup will do a happy dance for. Just remember, form follows function, and before you jump into a crate makeover, you need to select a design that is still a cozy, safe place for your dog .

"In the old days, a dog kennel in your home was a basic wire, no-frills crate that was often hidden away in a spare bedroom out of the view of guests," Mary R. Burch, PhD, AKC Family Dog Director and animal behaviorist, says. "But dogs are such important members of our families that the whole crate scene has changed. Now you can find multiple sources online that sell crates that double as attractive coffee tables, end tables, and credenzas." Or you can create those looks yourself.

Burch says your furniture-style crate should be big enough for the dog to comfortably lie down, stand, and turn around in. It should also have adequate air flow and be easy to keep clean . If your dog loves to chew, make sure his muzzle can't fit into the spaces between the crate's bars.

With these functionality tips in mind, here are 10 ideas for upgrading your dog's indoor kennel so it fits right in with your room's decor—and will keep your dog exactly where he wants to be—near you.

Make Your Dog Crate Into a Table

If your dog crate idea needs to fit a small space, try making a simple DIY table. Jeanette Lockmiller-Stretch took this approach when she wanted to help her Sheltie , Buddy, feel secure but also wanted his kennel to fit in with her sunroom's furnishings. She devised a skirted table with help from her husband, Mark. Together they spent two evenings and about $100 building a table from 28-inch-tall legs and a top. They applied a sun-bleached gray stain to give it the look of furniture. Buddy's wire crate fits perfectly under the tabletop. Cafe curtain panels hung from tension rods hide the crate's wire sides while still allowing for good airflow. Stylist: Kristine Kennedy

Cover a Crate With a Slipcover

Sometimes covering your dog's crate is the right aesthetic solution—and may even be something your pet's veterinarian recommends to combat anxiety . This affordable fabric look helps a kennel slip into a living room or bedroom as part of the scenery. Sew a slipcover that can slide over the kennel. Then top it with a desired surface to turn the unit into a pretty side table. When the kennel door is closed, a cover held by hook-and-loop tabs can roll down. A dowel sewn into the bottom of the cover will hold it in place. Stylist: Jeni Wright

Make the Dog Crate Into an Island

For large dogs that need lots of room, like Honey the Lab , consider a high-top solution to disguise your crate. Interior designer Kristina Crestin dreamt up a central island that fits snugly over a wire kennel in the center of the family mudroom . The island's substantial repurposed maple surface creates a drop zone for keys, papers, and dog treats. Crestin chose a quartzite flooring that gives a slate look and is easy to clean when Honey comes in from the outdoors with muddy paws. A string of pendant lights hung above the crate enhances its island feel. Now Honey has a place to hang out without being underfoot when the kids get ready to go to school or prep for practices. Stylist: Andrea Caughey

Build a Crate Into Your Decor

A wall in the home office turned into an ideal place to integrate a dog kennel for two pals—a Lab, shown , and his camera-shy terrier friend, not shown . Architect and interior designer Stacy Millman, owner of SKM Design , custom built an extended crate opposite the homeowner's desk. "The kennel was built for two dogs, but it's based on the larger dog's size so both could easily stand, turn around, and be comfortable," Millman says.

The 80-inch-long kennel measures 24 inches deep and 35 inches high to give both dogs room to either snuggle or lie down on their own beds. It stands slightly higher than regular counter height so the lab can easily maneuver. "There's a lock built into the floor on the bottom when they need the dogs to stay inside the kennel," Millman says. "We chose metal grills for the front for ventilation."

Millman hung upper cabinets above the kennel to match the look of the kitchen cabinetry right around the corner. "It's nice not to feel bummed out about your dog's crate taking over your space or to feel like you need to move it when you have company come over," she says. Stylist: Anna Molvik. Designer: Stacy Millman, SKM Design.

Build In a Kennel With Farmhouse Flair

Give a kennel a modern-farmhouse feel by building it into a lower cabinet or counter base and fronting it with painted beadboard. Make the kennel's door out of a flea-market find like this decorative floor grate to up its character. Adding an indoor-outdoor cushion creates a cozy roost for your best furry friend to sleep .

Give a Crate the Furniture Treatment

A dog crate can become a part of a bedroom's or living room's decor when you select an appealing ready-made, furniture-style piece. Hang a floating shelf above it to show off favorite artwork, and accentuate it with pet-safe houseplants in different sizes for a curated wall display tied together by natural touches. Stylist: Kendra Surface. Designer: Maria Mendez Reed

Build a Bench That's Also a Kennel

If you have one of those dogs who loves to follow you everywhere , why not build her a kennel in the heart of the family room? One that's sized for a small dog can even be used as a bench by your family members—or as a window seat for your four-legged friend to observe the neighborhood. Partial paneling dresses up the crate's sides, while simple metal rods allow air to circulate. (Just make sure there's enough room for your pup to freely stand and move around inside the kennel.) Interior Designer: Cathy Kramer

Embed the Crate in a Focal Point

One way to offset the utilitarian look of a crate is to build a shelving unit around it and paint it a playful color like this orange. The shelves add interest while creating display spaces that pulls the eye away from the wire frame. A roll-down fabric shade can be untied to lower when your dog needs a rest or when you want to hide the kennel from view. To fully integrate the crate-shelf into a room's decor, hang artwork above it and bring in accent pillows and a throw to adorn a nearby sofa or chair to create a complementary color palette that ties the kennel into the space.

Integrate a Kennel into a Window Seat

Adding a dog kennel attractively into a busy space like a breakfast room requires planning. Designer Pamela Porter decided to have her pup's crate anchor a window seat for one built-in unit that added seating and a side table to maximize the room's layout. She matched the crate's millwork to the rest of the room's aesthetic for a seamless look. Best of all, Porter got to say bye-bye to their unsightly metal kennel that once occupied the same space. And bonus for the family dog: They're now just a few feet away from any crumbs that land under the breakfast table. Designer: Pamela S. Porter

Convert a Cabinet into a Crate

An easy place to make over into a perfectly cozy pad for smaller dogs is a lower cabinet in a kitchen or laundry room. The key is to make sure the cabinet is spacious enough and that air can move. And of course be sure it's well separated from any cabinets that contain household cleaners or other potential toxins . Cut the side out of a cabinet in the kitchen for your dog to use as a kennel. Hang a curtain you can lower or tie back as desired.

With a little creativity there are endless ways you can make your pet's kennel look right at home in the heart of your home—right where your pet loves to be.
