Disney Cruise Line Adventures in Key West

When you think of Key West, Florida , what comes to your mind? Turquoise water, world-class fishing, colorful culture, interesting history, delicious key lime pie, amazing sunsets…? The list of what this tropical paradise is known for could go on and on.

With the addition of Galveston, Texas , and Miami as new homeports, Disney Cruise Line is returning to the vibrant city of Key West on select Western Caribbean and Bahamas sailings.

Here are just a few ways you can explore the southernmost city in the continental U.S.:

Trolley, Train and Bike Tours

Sit back and relax on the Old Town Trolley or Conch Train Tour or get a little exercise on the Key Lime Island Bike Tour . All three are great ways to enjoy numerous Key West historical sites and local hot spots, including a tasting of delicious key lime treats at the world-famous Kermit’s Key Lime Pie Shoppe!

Water and Wildlife Adventures

Explore the waters of the Key West Wildlife Refuge, home to a vast array of beautiful marine life, on the Snorkel Kayak and Dolphin Watching Adventure . Be sure to have your camera ready as you might see dolphins jumping and playing in a special area known to the locals as the “Dolphin Playground.” You can also enjoy the water from above on a glass bottom boat , sail through it on a catamaran , or dive in on a Snuba tour , an activity that combines the ease or snorkeling with the thrill of scuba diving.

If you’ve been to Key West, tell us in the comments about your favorite spots around the island. And don’t forget, when the ship’s in port, venture ashore!

Pirates Soul museum is closed. I live in Key West so if anybody has any questions feel free to contact me.

I love Key West! It is such a casual, relaxing place to visit. And, it has one of my favorite Restaurant’s – Louie’s Backyard. It’s a beautiful, water’s edge restaurant with three tiers of decking for gorgeous views. The food is incredible as well!

Key Lime ice cream bar at the Key Lime Pie shop. The bike tour sounds like fun.

If you’re into pirates – Pirate Soul museum is fun. Mel Fisher Maritime museum is interesting as is Hemingway house. And if you have time, the paella at El Meson de Pepe is divine!!

I just love walking down Duval street and eating/drinking at some of the locally owned establishments. Definitely enjoy some conch chowder and fritters. YUM.

This looks beautiful. I would like to go on one of the Cruises sometime next year. Fingers crossed. 🙂

One of my all-time favorite DCL ports o’ call!

We did the Key Lime Island Bike Tour and it was great! Out tour guide was knowledgable and fun and riding a bike is a great way to see the city! We biked almost 7.5 miles in about 2.5hrs and I (as lazy, non-exerciser) never felt sore…and it was only the 2nd day of our cruise!! Highly Highly Highly Recommended!!

I’m partial to the Hemingway house tour and the Key West Aquarium.

It has been said that the idiosyncratic architecture and the laid-back atmosphere of this small, two-by-four-mile island probably have nurtured the talents of more writers per capita than any other city in the country. More than 100 published authors reside, full- or part-time, in Key West, and the island is noted for its artistic community with a number of galleries exhibiting artwork in varying styles and mediums. At day’s end in Key West, visitors gather at Mallory Square to experience the daily "sunset celebration" - a tradition that Key Westers share with visitors. While musicians, jugglers, mimes and other performers provide entertainment, the sun sinks slowly below the horizon as sunset cruise boats sail by in Key West Harbor. Dining opportunities in the island city are as enticing as the sunset. Cuisine choices are varied and unique, but most restaurants feature great area seafood such as shrimp, Florida lobster, conch chowder, local fish and stone crab claws. Key lime pie is a heavenly end to an exquisite meal.

Guide to Sailing to the Key West Cruise Port

Posted on Published: 02/14/2023

I’ve sailed on many cruise ships in the Caribbean, and one of my favorite ports of call ever is Key West in the Florida Keys. As a US port, it’s a nice stop where you can turn on your cellular service, use US dollars, and even stop at an American pharmacy if you need any refills. But, it’s also a beautiful, walkable town with so many activities that are great for families and cruise ship passengers.

While some frequent cruisers skip getting off the ship at ports in favor of spending more time on the ship, I highly recommend leaving the ship in Key West. At a minimum, it’s great to walk around, shop, and have a delicious meal before going back to the ship. It’s an easy port to explore.

There are three different docks in Key West where your cruise ship may dock. These include Mallory Square Dock, Outer Mole Pier (owned by the U.S. Navy), and Pier B (which is privately owned and is in front of the Westin Resort). Our recent Virgin Voyages cruise (as well as my last Disney Cruise Line Key West sailing) docked at Mallory Square, which seems to be most commonly used by cruise ships.

It’s important to note that there has been some talk of local ordinances and changes to cruise ship rules in Key West. During the cruise shutdown, Key West voters to limit cruise tourism in the area.

The proposed ordinance would limit the number of ships based on the number of passengers. While smaller vessels could still be allowed, larger ships would not be permitted. While the Key West residents did approve this, it hasn’t been implemented.

In looking at the cruise calendar for all of the cruises in Key West, it’s clear that not all of the cruise lines have returned to the port of Key West. For instance, we didn’t see any upcoming Disney Cruise Lines or Royal Caribbean ships on the schedule. So keep an eye on these proposed changes if you’d like to visit this popular port of call.

Excursions or Going Solo

If your cruise ship is going to stop at Key West for a day, you’ll want to consider whether or not you’d like to book an official cruise ship excursion. Unlike some other ports, this is really a place where you can easily comfortably head off on your own. But there are lots of excursion options to consider if you’d prefer to do something scheduled.

These are likely to vary based on availability and can differ by the cruise line. On my last sailing to Key West, offerings included a bike tour, wildlife safari, a trolley tour, parasailing, a catamaran tour, a snorkel trip, a walking tour, a pub crawl, and a rum tasting tour. You may also be able to visit Fort Zachary Taylor State Park or Dry Tortugas National Park.

In general, excursions should be toured in advance, because they may sell out. Booking a cruise-sponsored excursion is typically the safest option – you’ll be refunded if the ship can’t stop there for some reason, and you’ll be sure to be back on the ship in time at the end of the evening.

You can also opt to walk off the ship and do your own thing for the day. It’s fairly easy to get around, and getting back to the ship at the end of the day probably won’t be too difficult. There are several options for getting around. You can walk around, or even rent a golf cart to drive yourself around the town.

On our first visit to Key West, we opted to purchase tickets to the Conch Tour Train. This adorable train makes three stops around Key West, while also offering narration and information about the town. It stops at the seaport, the Southernmost Point, and the Hemingway House.

It was nice to get a ride to those destinations, while also learning about the history of Key West. The Conch Tour Train offers a nice balance between all of those. Tickets can be purchased online in advance, but you can also buy them once you arrive at the port.

There are also walking tour options , which can be a great way to see the town and learn more about the history.

Hemingway Home and Museum

We chose to visit the Hemingway Home and Museum on our first visit to Key West. After visiting the Southernmost Point, we walked down to the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum. While kids may not know much about Ernest Hemingway, they will certainly love the 40-50 six-toed cats that make the house/museum their home.

It’s important to know that the Hemingway Home is cash only, so make sure you have some with you. Guided tours are offered at no additional cost on a set schedule. We had just missed one and decided to skip it. You can easily walk through the house yourself, reading the exhibits. No reservations are required for your visit.

Southernmost point marker

Southernmost Point of the United States

The most popular photo opportunity in Key West, the Southernmost Point marker is definitely a must-see and one of the best things to do in Key West . Go early, because a line forms as tourists want to take their photo by the marker. It’s a gorgeous area on the waterfront as well. We found that everyone in line was friendly and willing to take photos of the group in front of them, so you can all be in the picture.

Mel Fisher Maritime Museum

The Mel Fisher Maritime Museum is a nonprofit maritime museum located in Key West. Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door. It’s open 7-days a week, and exhibits include both permanent and rotating traveling exhibits.

Entrance to Key West Aquarium with fountain in front

Key West Aquarium

If you are visiting with young children, you may consider visiting the Key West Aquarium . It’s a short walk from the Mallory Square pier, and it’s located among shops and restaurants.

Tickets for the aquarium can be purchased online. Combination tickets, including tickets to tours in Key West like the Conch Tour Train and the Old Town Trolley Tour, are also offered.

Exhibits at the aquarium focus on the local marine life, including sea turtles and sharks. A Sea Turtle Conservation Tour, a jellyfish exhibit, a shark exhibit, and a touch tank are among the popular attractions. Check out their schedule online before you go to see the times of the Shark Feeding and Conservation Tour.

Shopping and Eating in Key West

While there are some fun points of interest and excursions in Key West Florida, during this past visit, I enjoyed just walking around the town. We had a few places in mind to visit, and armed with Google maps, just walked around on our own.

As soon as you walk off your ship, you’ll be faced with souvenir shops and cafes. If you are looking to have a slice of that famous Key Lime pie, there are ample opportunities throughout the town (including at the port). You’ll also see some kiosks where you can book some last-minute excursions if you’ve made a last-minute decision to do one.

We started our journey at the nearby CVS, to pick up a few forgotten items. Then, we walked to Books & Books at the Studios, the bookstore co-owned by famed young-adult author Judy Blume. This is a great place to pick up the latest beach read, especially if you need a book to read on your cruise. They have lots of wonderful books, including staff suggestions if you aren’t sure what to purchase.

Attached to the bookstore is the Studios, a beautiful space with several visiting art galleries. It’s definitely worth visiting after picking up some books.

We then headed to Duval Street, the most popular and busy street on Key West. This is where you’ll find most of the shops, bars, and restaurants – many offering live music.

Most of the restaurants are casual and don’t require reservations, so you can even choose a restaurant just by walking by. Two of the most popular ones for tourists include Sloppy Joe’s and Irish Kevin’s. During our most recent visit, we ate at Lucy’s Retired Surfers Bar & Restaurant , which also has other locations. We really enjoyed the atmosphere as well as our meals and drinks.

Before going back to the ship, we stopped at Mallory Square, an area with some great souvenir shops and kiosks. We made sure to visit the Cuban Coffee Queen, a coffee shop in the indoor building adjacent to the square. It’s a great place to pick up a cup of coffee or a snack before heading back to your ship.

You can really have your choice of experience at the Port of Key West – from adventure excursions to the casual walking around that we did. Just keep in mind that if you do want to participate in an excursion, it’s always best to book those in advance.

Which Section of Disney’s Old Key West Resort is Right for You?

Walt Disney World’s Old Key West resort is Disney’s oldest Disney Vacation Club property . The entire resort is comprised of one, two, and three-bedroom villas with full kitchens, and studio villas with kitchenettes. The rooms are among the largest on property, many with scenic views of water areas or the Lake Buena Vista golf course. (Click on photos to enlarge)

The amenities are family friendly, with one table service restaurant (Olivia’s); a quick service restaurant; a small arcade; a small bar; a feature pool (with a sauna) and three smaller quiet pools; a community center with games and crafts; a fitness center; and basketball, shuffleboard, tennis, and volleyball courts. The vibe is decidedly relaxed with less of the hustle and bustle you might find at some of the other Disney hotels.

Located between Epcot and Disney Springs, there is bus transportation to all the Disney theme parks and other guest locations. Additional transportation to Disney Springs and Saratoga Springs is available via boat. There is also a walking path to Disney Springs. Some guests may find it easier to access the parks via car (a running trail around just part of the resort is 1.4 miles long). There is parking throughout the resort.

There is little to distinguish the sections of Old Key West architecturally, the buildings are all pastel-colored, two or three story structures. But there are features of each area that may make one area more or less appealing to you, depending on your needs. If you have a preference on where you’d like to stay at Old Key West, you can use our Room Finder tool to narrow your options. Then go ahead and make a room request . Requests are not guaranteed, but they are often honored.

Here’s what to expect from each area of the resort.

The Hospitality House is the hub of almost all public activities at the resort. Some guests may prefer to be close to this area for convenience, others may be fine at a distance because they prefer a quieter location.

Buildings 11-14 are closest to the Hospitality House area.

Key West Looks to Limit Cruise Ship Size and Cap Daily Passenger Disembarkations

Key West is looking to limit the size of cruise ships permitted to visit the popular South Florida cruise port and cap the number of passenger disembarkations per day through a series of proposed amendments to the City Charter of Key West. There are three specific amendments proposed for the November ballot that could lead to many cruise lines, including Disney Cruise Line, eliminating Key West from future itineraries.

The Key West Committee for Safer Cleaner Ships hopes voters will vote yes on all three of the following proposed amendments:

  • Limiting persons disembarking from cruise ships to a total of 1500 persons per day. The number of persons disembarking from cruise ships shall be limited to a total of not more than 1,500 persons per day at any and all public and privately owned or leased property located within the municipal boundary of the City of Key West.
  • Prohibiting cruise ships with a capacity of 1300 or more persons from disembarking. Cruise ships with the capacity to carry 1,300 or more persons (passengers and crew) shall be prohibited from disembarking individuals at any and all public or privately owned or leased property located within the municipal boundary of the City of Key West.
  • To give priority to cruise lines with the best environmental and health records. The City of Key West shall give preference and priority to cruise ships and cruise lines that have the best environmental record (the lowest number of environmental violations, penalties and fines) and best health record (the best scores and least number of violations in health inspections and reports issued by the Center for Disease Control Vessel Sanitation Program).

Key West Committee for Safer Cleaner Ships is leveraging the COVID-19 pandemic and environmental concerns for their cause.

Cruise ships are uniquely prone to the spread of infectious disease, as recent reports from U.S. Centers for Disease Control,  Miami Herald ,  Washington Post,  and  Wall Street Journal  make clear. The destructive environmental impacts of cruise ships on air and water quality are well-established. A return to previous cruise-ship size and disembarkation numbers in Key West would resume its negative impacts on the local environment and pose a serious risk to the health, safety, and economy of its citizens. Overcrowding from cruise ships would threaten the recovery of Key West’s $1 billion tourist industry, 92% of which is generated by multi-day tourists. Cruise ships account for 50% of visitors to the island, but contribute just 8% of tourism revenues. Cruise ships present Key West with a high-risk/low-reward proposition that must be urgently addressed. Key West Committee for Safer Cleaner Ships – Case Study on Limiting Cruise Ships in Key West

The Safer Cleaner Ships committee stresses this is not intended to be a cruise ship ban , the proposals would still allow for one small cruise ship of 1,300-capacity, or two very small cruise ships of 750-capacity. However, if it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck.

In June, the Chamber of Commerce met to discuss the future of cruising Key West releasing some data on the $90 million dollar impact of the cruise industry. Based on studies that estimate the percentage of passengers and crew who disembark in Key West, their average spending, and fees associated with cruise ships entering the port, more than $90 million of revenue is realized in Key West.

KWCoC Cruise Impact Charts 20200624 1

In 2019, Key West had 417 cruise ship arrivals, only 22 meet the proposed criteria for size. The Chamber of Commerce does not feel ships meeting the proposed criteria could support the expected revenue stream based on the seasonal cruise ship visits of ships meeting the criteria.

KWCoC Cruise 2019 Ship Arrivals 20200624

According to the chamber, over 800 full-time jobs are attributed to Key West employment based on $75 million dollars of passenger and crew spending in 2019.

KWCoC Cruise Jobs 20200624

The Chamber invited Tom McAlpin to speak and highlight Virgin Voyages which was planning to reveal it’s first cruise ship, Scarlet Lady, on March 20th… The mid-size Scarlet Lady, sailing with 2770 passengers and 1150 crew, is slated to make 33 calls to Key West between October 2020 and December 2021.

KWCoC Cruise Tom McAlpin Virgin Voyages 20200624 3

McAlphin was key to Disney Cruise Line’s launch serving as the Chief Financial Officer before eventually becoming the president, and the person who wrote and handed Michael Eisner the business plan back in the mid-1990’s.

During McAlphin’s presentation he shared some of the safety measures planned for the when the Scarlet Lady debuts following the restart of the cruise industry.

The following is a video of the meeting covering the chamber’s stance as well as some interesting insight into Disney Cruise Line from McAlphin.

The potential impact to Disney Cruise Line is limited to the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder as the Dream and Fantasy are too big for the port in terms of ship size. As it stands with currently announced itineraries, the Magic and Wonder have 27 future calls scheduled to Key West, Florida .

We are on the 12/7 5-nt on the Magic, which is scheduled to stop in Key West. If we actually sail, maybe they will replace Key West with another CC day…

' src=

I’M with Doug A day at castaway key , much better that A day at key West I know , I have been to both.

' src=

Instead of Key West, If they could get through all the politics, I would love a day at Havana. What an experience it would be to see the city, meet the people, sample the food and enjoy a Cuban Cigar ( and I don’t even smoke)

' src=

Since it says ships with a capacity of 1300 (passengers and crew) my assumption is it would stop Magic and Wonder from ever stopping there if this passes, not just Dream and Fantasy.

' src=

Correct, the potential impact to Disney Cruise Line is limited to the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder as the Dream and Fantasy are too big for the port in terms of ship size.

' src=

I would imagine this might answer the question surrounding the possible requirement of booking shore excursions through DCL. Simple way to comply capacity visitations in what other destinations must also be considering.

' src=

We are scheduled for the 12/30 departure on the Magic. An additional day at sea would be fine also! Actually going ANYWHERE right now is appealing!! (Any day on a Disney Cruise Ship is a good day!!!)

Nude cruise to set sail from Florida next year: Here are the starting costs, itinerary

disney cruise ship in key west

The "Big Nude Boat" cruise, which allows passengers to bare all − yes, even at the buffet − is set to sail from Florida next year.

The "11-day adventure" to the Caribbean is set for the first two weeks of February on the Norwegian Pearl, according to the Bare Necessities Tour & Travel website.

"Bare Necessities’ newest nude cruise is a private island double-dip with a brand new travel partner!" the company wrote on its website.

The trip which embarks from Miami, includes "an exclusive visit to an idyllic private island" in The Bahamas as well a another exclusive stop on the way back to the Port of Miami.

"Two opportunities to enjoy a new slice of Bare-adise, coupled with a beautiful selection of Eastern Caribbean island stops, will make this a can’t miss Big Nude Boat experience," the travel company posted.

Why cruises are popular with swingers: 'What happens on the ship ... stays on the ship'

A cruise to nowhere: Royal Caribbean sailing canceled after guests boarded

Big Nude Boat cruise sailing dates and destinations:

The ship departs from the Port of Miami on Feb. 3 and returns to the same port on Feb. 14.

The itinerary includes stops at the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, St. Maarten, Dominica, Martinique and St. Lucia.

How much does the Big Nude Boat cruise cost?

Rates for an inside cabin start at $2,000 per person.

They stretch as high as $33,155 for the top room on the ship: a Haven three-bedroom garden villa.

Guests are encouraged to park their bare behinds on towels provided on board in areas including the pool deck and the buffet area, according to the website.

"Passengers can easily follow our rule on nudist etiquette by always placing a towel down before sitting," it reads. "Remember to pack a swimsuit; not all excursions are clothing optional."
