Things to do in Gulmarg this winter

By Aarti Sheth Cooper

Things to do in Gulmarg Gulmarg's forested neighbourhoods that are ideal for smaller treks

If you think Gulmarg in winter is only about skiing, think again. There's much more to the snowy town than the slopes. The weather in Gulmarg opens with heavy blankets of snow every year, giving way to sheets of rain drenching the February skies. It's when the nearby Drang Falls turns into spikes of ice and a trek through the town leads to the reflective beauty of the frozen Alpather Lake.

If you're looking to explore its winter charm for yourself, book a flight to Srinagar, which has the nearest airport to Gulmarg. From the airport, the remaining distance can be covered via private vehicles or cabs. While the route remains easily navigable till Tangmarg, the steep incline from thereon can become tricky to cross and requires excellent driving skills, especially during the snow season. But the effort will be worth it, for we have rounded up a list of all the things to do in Gulmarg to make the most of its winter season:

Things to do in Gulmarg

Whether you are a first-timer or a seasoned skier, Gulmarg has something for everyone. The official ski season is from December to April, but check the snowfall levels before you go to make sure there is enough fresh powder. There is an adequate beginners' area, options for off-piste, heli-skiing (from 15,000ft) and cross-country skiing. You can access most of the town's three-acre system via the two gondolas and four chair and surface lifts. If a motorised adventure is more your speed, there are plenty of snowmobile operators to take you through snow-covered meadows. Your best bet is to make your way up to Kongdoor Station on the gondola and start your tour there. Adrenaline junkies can opt for the 45-minute high-speed ride that covers the best viewpoints and brings you as close to the border as you can get. If altitudes make you queasy, race around town on a four-wheel giant quad bike (at the gondola's base). Website

Ride the gondola

At first, the daunting crowds may scare you away, but brave the traffic and reach the very top—it will be the best decision you make. The gondola has two phases; the first one takes you to the Kongdoor Station, which is filled with tour operators, restaurants, sunbathing chairs and tourists. The second phase, however, takes you to Aparwath Station (at a height of over 13,000ft and open only if the weather permits), which has sparse crowds, a tranquil environment and stupendous views of the snow-coated Himalayas. Website

Explore Gulmarg town

If you thought Gulmarg was only about skiing, then you are in for a surprise. Put on your snowshoes and go exploring this stunning Himalayan town. Get some insight into the architectural history with a visit to the Victorian-style St Mary's Church, which is set on a wild landscape. It is also home to the world's highest 18-hole golf course, which turns into a beautiful snow-covered meadow in the winter and is a sight to behold. Around Gulmarg there are plenty of beautiful spots, such as the Ningle Nallah and Ferozepur Nallah—streams famous for trout fishing. Though they may be partially or totally frozen in the winter, they are still worth a visit. The Gulmarg Biosphere Reserve surrounding the hilly town is popular for spotting wildlife like the endangered musk deer, red fox and griffon vulture. Ask your hotel to arrange a guide.

Go trekking

Most people plan their trekking trip to the Valley of Flowers during the summer months. However, winter too has thrilling, unique opportunities for serious adventure junkies. A challenging 3km trek from Aparwath Station will take you to the stunning Alpather Lake, which lies completely frozen in winter. Wzalk across the lake or simply admire the mountains reflected in its mirrored surface. There are guided trekking opportunities in Tangmarg (18km away) and smaller treks within the Gulmarg valley area. Website

Go skating, or sleighing

If you want to stay away from adventure sports, there are fun, low-key activities for you to do as well. There is an ice-skating rink in the heart of town, near the cable-car station. Rent equipment and find instructors to help you glide about. Alternately, get pulled around on sledges almost anywhere in the town—just call out to one, negotiate a rate and hop on. Pony rides are limited in winter, especially in case of heavy snowfall, but ask around and you are bound to find someone willing to hire one out. Snowshoes are available at most rental shops and are ideal for exploring the neighbouring forest areas.

frozen waterfall at Tangmarg

Get off the trail at Tanmarg

Around 18km from Gulmarg, Tanmarg has enough to merit a quick detour. The village is home to the famous 15th-century shrine of Baba Reshi, a Muslim scholar who meditated in the area. Its latticework windows and carved deodar pillars make it a charming architectural throwback. A bustling market area around the shrine also serves as a draw, with everything from street food and exquisite pottery on offer. It is also a popular picnic spot among the locals. Another must-visit site here are the Durum Falls, perfect for photo opportunities, especially when the cascading water freezes over in winter. Make sure you hire a guide to show you around.

Feast on the local fare

Lip-smacking tabak maaz, rogan josh, nadru yakhni and phirni are just a few dishes that are a part of the traditional 36-course Kashmiri wazwan, where carefully crafted family recipes are served on a large plate (called a trami) to small groups of diners. Sarposh at Khaleel Palace ( Website ) is known for serving this feast. Cloves at The Khyber Himalayan Resort & Spa is another restaurant that serves the wazwan, along with Italian, Chinese and Mediterranean cuisines. If the wazwan seems too daunting, try the local fare—dum aloo, lamb stew and seekh kebabs—at any of the town's popular eateries. Head to Bakshi Restaurant—a local favourite—for the haq, or explore the Kashmiri menu by a cosy fireplace at The Nedou's Bukhari ( Website )

Gulmarg insiders recommend

"Go skiing in Gulmarg in winter (January to March is the best time for fresh snowfall). Adventure skiing is really picking up with off-piste and heli-skiing options on offer. In summer, visit Ladakh and be sure to go on off-road adventures. The Great Lakes trek is one of the best treks in Kashmir, with phenomenal views and plenty of fly-fishing opportunities. However, you do need to be in great physical shape, as it takes about eight days to trek from base camp to the last camp." - Javed Ahmed Reshi, mountain ski guide & avalanche forecaster

"Be sure to drive up the famous Mughal Road to Pir Ki Gali. En route, you will see beautiful Mughal sarais where Emperor Jahangir used to rest during his travels." -  Dilnavaz ‘Daisy' Nedou, managing director, Nedou's Hotel

"Go off the beaten track in Gulmarg. Plan a picnic to a forest near Strawberry Valley; walk along the trout-filled mountain stream, Ferozepur Nallah to reach Drang to see some old ruins. Trek to the Alpather Lake at an altitude of almost 4,000m, which stays frozen for most of the year. Or go for easier walks through the forests around Gulmarg." - Khaver Jeelani, CEO, Hotel Highlands Park

"Adventures like snowmobiling, snowboarding and ATV riding are a must. If you're looking to trek in Gulmarg, the best time is from May to September." - Rais Bakshi, owner, Bakshi Restaurant

“Take a walk down the Bota Pathri village for some quiet time. You should also visit the Apharwat peak, which is about 12,000ft above sea level.” - Manzoor Ahmad, owner, Khaleel Palace

About this Blog: Gulmarg is one of the most popular hill stations in India and is also famous as a ski destination. In this blog we will share our experience in Gulmarg, how to reach there, where to stay, Gulmarg Gondola, things to do in Gulmarg and more. Read this Gulmarg Travel Guide to know all about Gulmarg.

You can call Gulmarg a happy destination. Because I am sure you will feel nothing but happy in this beautiful hill station of Kashmir. Gulmarg is known as an ultimate skiing destination and one of the top winter destinations in India. It also has the world’s highest Gondola ride. Apart from these there are lots of interesting things to do in Gulmarg.

Meadows of Gulmarg

In short, Gulmarg is spectacular in winter. Infact, this was one of the reasons I was skeptical to visit this place in the spring. Also the fact that we were exploring more of offbeat Kashmir in our trip, I had thought of skipping the popular Gulmarg. But boy! I was so wrong. The place is simply breathtaking in any season. And for a first timer in Kashmir, Gulmarg should be on your Jammu and Kashmir tour , no matter what.

I do have to thank Agni for literally dragging me there. Yeah! Yeah! The wife is not always right! The husband also has great ideas (sometimes!).

A beautiful stream in Kashmir

Gulmarg literally means “the meadow of flowers” . In summer, the green vistas of this place are dotted with colourful flowers. The place with its breathtaking beauty, mesmerizing landscapes, gondola ride and adventure activities is undoubtedly an all season destination. Read along to know our experience here along with things to do in Gulmarg, how to reach, where to stay and other relevant information.

Where is Gulmarg?

Things to do in Gulmarg

Gulmarg is a beautiful hill station located in the Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir. The town is located at an altitude of 8690 feet in the Pir Panjal range of the western Himalayas.

Sultan Yusuf Shah Chak had named this place ‘Gulmarg’ in the 16th century. He used to visit here with his wife Habba Khatoon .

Gulmarg Travel Guide

Gulmarg was also one of the favourite destinations of Emperor Jahangir. It is believed that he had collected as many as 21 wild flowers from here for his own gardens.

During the British rule, Gulmarg served as a retreat for the British soldiers just like Darjeeling , Shimla and Mussoorie.

Gulmarg Travel Guide

How to reach gulmarg.

To reach Gulmarg, you have to first reach Srinagar. Srinagar is well connected by flights from New Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai.

From Srinagar, Gulmarg is about 60 km and it takes about 90 minutes to reach there by car. You will get private taxis from Srinagar to Gulmarg. The taxi fare is Rs 2000-2500 including driver and fuel.

Srinagar to Gulmarg

Gulmarg in shared taxi

You will not get any shared cab from Srinagar. You have to take a shared cab to Tangmarg. From there, you have to take another cab to Gulmarg.  Local buses are also available, but only upto Tangmarg.

What is the best time to visit Gulmarg?

The best time to visit Gulmarg actually depends on what you want to do there. If you are the one to enjoy snow and snow activities, then winter is your time. There are some who visit here to beat the heat of the plains. For them, summer will be the best time. For those looking for greenery in the valleys and flowers, July to September will be a good time. April to June is perhaps the busiest season.

Things to do in Gulmarg in 1 Day

There are a lot of things to do in Gulmarg. As much as we wanted to stay for a night here, we finally opted for a day trip. We decided we would stop for a night here the next time we visit in the winters.

We started quite early from Srinagar and soon we were out of the city. The first glimpse of the mountains seems to show us what to expect for the day. Soon we reached Magam, a small village on the way.

YOU MAY ALSO LIKE : DOODHPATHRI, KASHMIR – VALLEY OF MILK

Finally, we reached Tangmarg from where the uphill road starts. The landscape too changes gradually. The plains and fields of mustard are gradually replaced by tall pines and cedars. The green meadows looked soothing to the eyes.

Meadows of Gulmarg

Soon we reached Gulmarg, our destination for the day. The bus stop and parking area is a small place. The place itself is quite a small hill station totally dependent on tourism. There are a number of shops and eateries in the market area. You will also find a lot of guides and ponies in this area. Cars from outside are not allowed beyond this point.

Gulmarg Club House

As soon as we reached the parking area, a number of guides and pony owners approached us. Yes, you will be approached by them and they will ask you to take the help of guides or take a pony ride. If you wish to take a pony ride, you can definitely do so. It will help the local economy.

However, a guide is not required to explore this place. All the places are well marked and there is not much extra a guide to add to the stories.

Ponies at Gulmarg can take you around

If you like to walk around, then ponies are also not needed to explore Gulmarg. The attractions, though not very near, are also not quite far away. If you like to walk around, you can definitely explore the place on foot, especially if you are staying for the night. Let me share with you what we did.

We had reached Gulmarg by 9 AM and decided to explore the place on foot. The pony owners warned us that the places are all far away, but yet we stuck to our decision. We knew that the Gondola ride would start at 11 AM. So we decided to visit the Maharaja Palace first.

1. Looking for History in Maharaja’s Palace

Maharaja Palace

The Maharaja Palace was nearest to the Parking Area. Not that we found much history there, the palace was once a royal palace of King Ranbir Singh of Kashmir. The palace might have been quite grand once upon a time, but time has definitely taken its toll on this wooden structure. The palace looks beautiful from the outside surrounded by tall pine and cedar trees.

Unfortunately, the palace was closed that day. There was a lone guard sitting in front of the palace. Although he did not allow us entry, he did share a few interesting stories about the place. He mentioned that the Maharaja Palace is supposedly haunted and only a braveheart can venture to the place after the sun is down. Well, the worn down building along with the sky high trees did give an eerie appeal to the place.

READ MORE: AHARBAL WATERFALLS – THE NIAGARA OF KASHMIR

After admiring the Maharaja Palace from outside, we decided to head out for our next destination. The guard also informed us that there is a viewpoint just a few steps away from the palace. It is not exactly a viewpoint, but you get a great view of the Baramulla plains and the mountains from there. Pakistan is just beyond those mountains, the guard informed.

Maharaja Palace has a nominal entry fee of Rs 30.00.

2. Gulmarg Golf Course

Gulmarg Golf Course

To be honest, I was awestruck seeing so much green. It was here I decided for the first time that Gulmarg is a happy place.

Gulmarg was once a retreat for the British troops in India. The British quite loved a game of golf and so they developed golf courses in this quaint hill station. The gold course was opened in 1911 and is one of the highest ones in the world. The first Golf Championship was played here in 1922.

The Gulmarg Golf Course was redesigned and reopened in 2011. I do not understand anything about golf. However, I found the place quite beautiful. Everywhere is green and it is so soothing to the eyes.

3. St Mary’s Church

View of St Marys Church in meadows

St. Mary’s Church is located just near the Golf Course. The century old Victorian Church looks quite beautiful standing in the middle of the meadows. The church has grey stone walls and is decorated beautifully inside. It is believed that the church was built in 1902 and was renovated later in 2013.

4. Go for the Gulmarg Gondola Ride

Gulmarg Gondola

After marveling at the St. Mary’s Church, we decided to go towards the Gondola Station. Gulmarg Gondola is by far the biggest attraction of Gulmarg. The cable car takes you from Gulmarg to the top of Apharwat Peak. Believe me, this cable car ride is a ‘once in a lifetime’ kind of experience.

Gulmarg Gondola is one of the world’s highest operating cable cars . This ropeway is capable of ferrying 600 people per hour. The ropeway is divided into 2 phases – Phase 1 and Phase 2. Gulmarg is the starting point while Apharwat is the end point. Kongdori in between is the centre point and the end point of Phase 1.

The Gondola Station is about 1.5 km walking distance from the parking area. If you want to take a pony, it will cost about Rs 200-250.00.

Gulmarg Gondola Boadring Station

The Gulmarg Gondola Boarding Point is a huge building. There is a ticket counter outside from where you will get tickets for both Phase 1 and Phase 2. You can get a ticket to Phase 1 only and then get your ticket to Phase 2 from the Phase 1 cable station.

We got our tickets for Phase 1 only and went inside the boarding station. The inside is quite impressive. Soon we were in the middle of a long queue waiting for our own cable car ride.

View from the cable car at Gondola ride

Gulmarg Gondola Phase 1

Fortunately for us, we did not have to wait more than 10 minutes in the queue. We heard that in peak tourist seasons, the waiting time is considerably longer, both while buying the tickets as well as at the boarding point.

We boarded the cable car and were off. It takes about 10 minutes to reach Kongdori, the Phase 1 station. In between we saw snow, pine trees, Gujjar settlements and more snow. It was an interesting ride. Once we were at Phase 1 station, we got down and stepped out. And this is what we saw!

First view of the snow at Kongdori Phase 1 of Gondola ride

There was snow and snow everywhere. All my desire to see snow in Kashmir was totally fulfilled. First we saw snowfall at Naranag and then on our way to Sonmarg. And finally in Gulmarg we were literally rolling in snow. As we walked down, we saw a few tourists trying their hand on skiing. Several others were playing with the snow while many were enjoying other snow activities.

Views of mountains at Kongdori

What did we do? Well, I was totally ecstatic to see so much snow. Agni was equally happy! We walked, fell down on snow, had a snowball fight and did all the crazy things we wanted to do. Later I went for a snowmobile ride that made me all giddy with joy. I actually felt like a kid who has been given her favourite chocolate! Yes, Gulmarg is definitely a happy place!

There is an eating area where there are a few restaurants. We went there to have Kahwa and Kashmiri Pulao. We did not go to Phase 2 and decided to spend our time at Kongdori itself.

Gulmarg Gondola Phase 2

Boarding Station at Gulmarg gondola Phase 1

The boarding station for Phase 2 is just beside that of Phase 1. It takes another 10 -12 minutes to reach Apharwat Peak , the end point of Phase 2. The views from the peak are quite breathtaking. If you have time, you can trek to the Alpather Lake located about 5 km away. However, remember that the trail is quite steep. There are no eateries in Phase 2.

If you are planning to trek to Alpather Lake, start early and visit Phase 2 first.

The end of Phase 2 is actually not the Apharwat Peak. It is a part of Kongdoori Mountains, a shoulder of the Apharwat Peak. The top of Apharwat Peak is towards Alpather Lake and you have to trek to reach there.

Mountain peaks of kashmir

After enjoying a considerable amount of time at Phase 1, we returned back to Gulmarg. We decided to walk around a bit and finally return back to the parking area.

The ticket cost for Gulmarg Gondola Ride for phase 1 (Gulmarg to Kongdori) is Rs 740 for Indians and Rs 1210 for foreigners for extended duration.

The ticket cost for phase 2 is Rs 1210 Indians and Rs 1900 for foreigners.

5. Maharani Temple

Maharani Temple at Gulmarg

On our return, we stopped at the Maharani Temple. The temple, located on a small hillock is said to be the royal temple of the Dogra Dynasty. The temple was built by Maharaja Hari Singh and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is known as Maharani Temple because the queen Maharani Mohini Bai used to pray here everyday.

The priest of the temple is a Muslim. So yes, there is no religious intolerance here.

It was almost 4 PM when we returned back to the main parking area. We had a lot of fun in Gulmarg that day. We had in fact done all the touristy things that day. After all, Gulmarg is a fully tourist destination and there is a reason for the popularity of the place.

If you are staying here for the night, then there are a few more places that you can visit.

6. Strawberry Valley

This is a small area having a strawberry plantation. It is not really a valley. The plantation can only be seen in the winter months. So if you do not have much time in hand, you can easily skip this place.

Prepaid network does not work in Kashmir and so you need to have a postpaid connection there. 3G network is available in Gulmarg around the market area and beginner slopes.  We found networks of Airtel, BSNL, Vodafone and Jio in Gulmarg. Most of the hotels provide free Wifi.

Srinagar is located about 50 km from Gulmarg. The entire road from Srinagar to Gulmarg is in an excellent condition. From Tangmarg, you start to gain altitude.

It is difficult to find snow in Gulmarg during May. The temperature rises to about 35 degrees and the snow melts. Infact, you might find only patches of snow in the second phase as well. However, it is prudent to remember that weather in mountains can change anytime.

You can buy Kashmiri handicrafts, pashmina shawls, brass items and stone jewellery and dry fruits. However, you will get all these items in Srinagar itself, where options will be more. So we recommend you to buy any souvenirs from Srinagar itself.

Apharwat Peak

Winter or not, Gulmarg is beautiful. And for us, it is definitely a happy destination. Now that we have visited this place in spring, we cannot wait to visit there again in the winters.

Hope this Gulmarg Travel Guide will help you plan your trip and decide on things to do in Gulmarg. If you find this blog useful, please share this with your family, friends and neighbours.

Planning the ultimate winter trip to Gulmarg – 10 Must Dos

Gulmarg is so beautiful all year around, but especially during winter months. Here are 10 things you must do if you visit Gulmarg in winter. Winter time in Gulmarg runs from December to March but the best months to experience these activities and experiences are January & February. Regular flights operate from major cities to Srinagar airport from where Gulmarg can be reached by car in a couple of hours. In winter season, it’s best to hire a local driver with car (details below)

december trip in gulmarg

1. Take a day trip to Srinagar and go for a shikara ride on Dal Lake or Ngeen Lake. Parts of the lake are frozen & the experience is truly surreal during winter time. Sunset is our favourite time for a Shikara ride on Dal Lake

december trip in gulmarg

2.Hop on the Gulmarg Gondola and take it all the way up to the second tier for snow-laden panoramas on a clear day. Make sure you take some water & snacks because the altitude might make you feel queasy

december trip in gulmarg

3. Stay at Khyber Resort in Gulmarg if you can. Some hotels provide just accommodation but this one is an experience in itself. It’s one of the very few places we keep going back to! It tends to be very busy during winter months but if you can get a reservation, you’re in for a treat. Even you’re not staying at the property, make sure you go have a meal or Kahwa there.

4.Speak to the people – the region’s history is fraught to say the least. Take some time to speak to locals, try foods steeped in tradition, and absorb their stories with an open mind. This is what makes travel special & educational. If you need a car with a reliable driver in and around Gulmarg, you can get in touch with Bilal (+91 96224 04885) – we have used his services many times over the years

5. Visit the instagram-famous frozen waterfall called Drung in Tanmarg. February is the best month to witness Drung in its frozen glory. This site can be completely lacklustre when the waterfall is not frozen. Since the exact date varies from year to year, make sure you ask the reception at your hotel if it is frozen already, otherwise it is not worth the trip at all

december trip in gulmarg

6. Learn winter sports such as skiing. Winter provides the perfect opportunity to visit Gulmarg and learn skiing. There are a number of ski schools in the area and Gulmarg’s slopes are ideal for practice

december trip in gulmarg

7. Go snowmobiling at Gulmarg Gondola. If you’re up for adventure, you should try your hand at snowmobiling. Rides start at INR1000 per person

december trip in gulmarg

8. Chances are you will not feel like leaving Gulmarg at all. But if you are keen on a day trip, drive to Pahalgam or Sonamarg to relish the beauty and solitude of Kashmir during winter time

december trip in gulmarg

9. Try local foods and cheese –  Wazwan, a multi course Kashmiri meal is popular in the region and winter is the perfect time to sample the decadent curries and desserts that make up the meal. Also take this opportunity to try some little known local delicacies like the Kashmiri cheese Kalari – this traditionally ripened cheese can only be found in this region.

10. The place is just brimming with natural beauty in winter months. Take a leisurely walk around the Golf Course and Gulmarg Road to enjoy beautiful panoramas all around.

Weather and Temperature Insights

Gulmarg is renowned for its abundant snowfall from November to February, turning it into a real-life fairy tale setting. How to Reach Agra from Delhi

How  to Reach Gulmarg in Winter

Reaching Gulmarg in winter is a three-step journey:

Srinagar to Tangmarg : About 38 kilometers, this route can be snowy and requires careful navigation.

Tangmarg to Gulmarg : A challenging 15-kilometer stretch, the road is often buried under snow. It’s essential to be confident in your driving skills if you’re considering this route.

Public transport is available, but there’s no direct bus from Srinagar to Gulmarg. Buses operate throughout the day without a fixed schedule.

Transportation Challenges:

The heavy snowfall can sometimes restrict road access, making the Gulmarg Gondola a primary mode of transportation. This cable car offers panoramic views and is an experience in itself. If you’re planning a trip during these peak months, it’s essential to book accommodations and other necessities in advance due to the tourist influx. For a hassle-free experience, consider planning your trip with trusted travel agencies like Cliffhangers India.

Packing Essentials for a Winter Trip to Gulmarg

Visiting Gulmarg in winter is a delightful experience, but it requires thoughtful packing to ensure comfort and warmth. The weather can be quite variable, with warmer days in October and progressively colder temperatures as winter sets in.

October Packing Essentials:

If you’re visiting in October, you might be surprised by the relatively warmer days, especially in Srinagar. However, as the month progresses, the chill in the air becomes more pronounced, particularly during the mornings and evenings. For an October visit, pack:

Plenty of cotton clothing for daytime comfort.

Light woolens for layering as the temperature drops.

A warm jacket for the chilly mornings and evenings.

November Packing Essentials:

November is often considered a less favorable month for visiting due to the drab scenery and dry weather. However, it does have the advantage of being off-season, which might result in cost savings. During this month:

The upper altitudes of Gulmarg experience the first snowfall, and temperatures dip below freezing.

In the lower regions, snow is scarce, but the wind carries a chill. Dress warmly, especially during early mornings and late evenings.

December Packing Essentials:

As December arrives, Gulmarg turns into a winter wonderland with significant snowfall, while the lower regions might still have minimal snow. If you’re planning a trip towards the end of December, consider:

Packing snow boots, even though they might not be essential, provides better comfort and grip in snowy conditions.

Dressing in layers and wearing gear designed for bitterly cold conditions, as the temperature can be quite harsh.

General Tips:

Always check the weather forecast before your trip to make any last-minute adjustments to your packing list.

Consider packing thermal wear, waterproof gloves, and a hat to protect against the cold.

Sunglasses and sunscreen are essential as the snow can reflect UV rays.

Remember, being well-prepared with the right clothing will enhance your winter experience in Gulmarg, allowing you to fully enjoy the beauty and activities this snowy paradise has to offer.

I enjoyed a walk in a beautiful walkway and saw the historic green golf course. This golf course is 2,650 meters above sea level and the highest one in the world. Winter time people enjoy skiing here, and summertime is best for golf.

Places to see in Gulmarg - World’s Highest Green Golf Course in Gulmarg

Oldest St Mary’s Church

The oldest St Mary’s Church is a Roman Catholic wooden church established in 1902 during the rule of British. It is possible to get a remote view of this church from the way to Gondola which located in the Shepherds Valley of Gulmarg.

Maharani Temple

Maharani is a Hindu Shiv temple and established in the nineteenth century by Maharaja Hari Sisodia, the Hindu ruler. It is used to be the royal temple and located on the hilltop and nicely visible on the way to Gulmarg Gondola.

The Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering

The Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering is built in 1969 and working to showcase Gulmarg as the best skiing destination. If you got interested in skiing and adventure sports, you could visit this institute in Gulmarg for taking different courses on skiing, mountaineering, and trekking.

Some of the other beautiful places to visit in Gulmarg are Khilanmarg Valley and Aplather Lake. Things to Do in Gulmarg

Gulmarg offers many things to do in almost every season. Check out some of the top things to do in Gulmarg during your day trip.

World’s Highest Cable Car Ride with Gulmarg Gondola

The gondola is the top attraction of Gulmarg. It was a fantastic experience to enjoy the world’s highest cable car ride with Gulmarg Gondola. You can take a Gondola ride at any time of the year.

A trip to Gulmarg is incomplete without a Gondola ride. This joyful fun ride offers two phases. Gulmarg Gondola Phase 1 will transfer you to Kongdoori Valley which is 10,500 ft above the sea level. The height of the Gondola Phase 2 (Apharwat Peak) is 13,800 ft.

Glumarg Gondola - World's Highest Cable Car Gondola ride

I only took the first phase ride to reach Kungdoor or Kongdoori. It is possible to explore the frozen lake Aplather from the Apharwat Peak if you take Gulmarg Gondola Phase 2 ride.

The beautiful Kongdoori Valley of Gulmarg with the snowy mountain view of Pir Panjal range

Either a pony rides or walk is the best way to reach the main point of Gondola. You’ll find the ticket counter there but to avoid the rush better to collect the Gulmarg Gondola tickets from Srinagar Tourist Reception Center. The first phase Gulmarg Gondola ride ticket price is 740 INR per person. First time I also had Kashmiri Tea or Kahwa, the popular Kesar Chai (Saffron Tea) on the way to Gondola.

Here is the Gulmarg Gondola ride video to get all the fun and details information before a trip.

A Pony Ride to Kongdoori (Phase 1)

After getting down from the Gondola, you’ll love the beautiful mountain views of the Kongdoori Valley. You have to get on the back of a pony to enjoy many adventure sports at Kongdoori Phase 1. The scenic view of the valley is possible to get from the pony on the way to the ski point. It was my first time riding experience on a pony in Jammu and Kashmir.

Moreover, I found pony riding is a popular activity in Jammu and Kashmir. This is the easy way to explore many valleys of Pahalgam and also for the sightseeing in the Sonmarg hill station.

I had a tasty Maggi time at Kongdoori Valley after coming back from the ski point. The taste of the Maggi Noodles from the open shop of Kongdoori was heavenly.

Enjoy Gulmarg Skiing & Other Winter Sports

Gulmarg is a popular skiing destination in India. The ultimate fun in Gulmarg is to play with powdery snow, and so skiing is the most popular adventure sports in winter. You can expect 15 to 20 ft deep snow during this time. Gulmarg Skiing season begins from December and runs till early April.

Top Things to do in Gulmarg - Gulmarg Skiing

I had so much fun even in spring while snow skiing for the first time. Skiing in Gulmarg cost me 700 INR. I’ve also enjoyed snow cycling and sledding on ice. Also, you can try ATV ride, heli-skiing, and snowboarding. Here, safety maintained adequately. As a beginner, you can try to ski by following the instructions. If you’re already an expert, don’t miss to get the full of fun here in Gulmarg.

Shop Best Quality Dry Fruits from Gulmarg

Before coming back from Gulmarg to Srinagar, I had enjoyed a bit shopping from Kohinoor Dry Fruits. This shop is running in Gulmarg since 1997, and they sell all types of best quality Kashmiri dry fruits at a wholesale price. I took 500 gm different dry fruits in 450 INR, and just 1 gm saffron cost me 200 INR, yes very expensive, but you’ll get the original one.

Dry Fruits Benefits - Best Quality Kashmiri Dry Fruits from Abid Kesar Mehal

However, another hill station Pahalgam is the land of saffron, and I bought from there too. How about a glass of Kesar Milk before a night of sleep? I think this is something trendy all over India.

24th Dec- Srinagar Airport to Gulmarg

25th Dec- Stay in Gulmarg

26th Dec Morning– Gulmarg to Srinagar and stay at houseboat, If possible local sightseeing

27th Dec- Srinagar to Pahalgam and back to Srinagar

28th Dec- Srinagar local sightseeing

29th Dec- Srinagar to Delhi

Please suggest. In our last visit to Manali in Dec’2016 we were fully disappointed as there was no snow anywhere.

' class=

You'll definitely get snow in your travel dates in Gulmarg. Stay 1 night in Pahalgam, otherwise it would be tiring. Avoid houseboat in December.

Thank you for your suggestion. We planned to stay 2 days in Gulmarg only to enjoy snow.

Please suggest an alternate plan.

We planned to visit Betab & Aru valley and Mamaleswar & Chandanwari Temple in Pahalgam.

When is the Best time to Visit Gulmarg?

To see a white Gulmarg and a lot of snow everywhere, the months of January or February would be the best time. To see the colors of the spring season in the meadows of Gulmarg, you should visit in April and early May.

If lush green valleys were on your mind then plan sometime in July, August, or early September. If you wanted to avoid the crowd and wanted to be here with less number of tourists, then you should visit either in March, August, November, or early December.

For a budgeted trip, I will recommend visiting in August, late October, or November.

The months of April till June sees a huge number of tourists in Gulmarg. This is the time when you would have to wait in line for 2-3 hours for a 15-minute Gondola ride. Unless this was the only time you could afford to plan this trip, I would recommend avoiding visiting Gulmarg in these 3 months.

Best time to Visit Gulmarg for Snowfall

It starts to snow in Gulmarg towards December end and continues till March. The frequency and intensity of snowfall will be greater in January and lowest in March.

The snow remains for a little after as well but chances of catching a live snowfall become rare. Normally the area above the gondola middle station (3’050 m) remains covered in snow from mid-November till around the end of May.

In the lower area of Gulmarg town, however, it may take till mid-January for the snow to stick to the ground. The snowfall may occur towards late December but the snow usually melts away.

At the top station of the cable car (4000 m), the top of Apharwat peak, you may find snow till the end of July. For regular tourists, this usually suffices. If you however want to see Gulmarg buried under several feet of snow then plan between Mid-January and February.

Best time to Visit Gulmarg for Photography

If you are interested in photography, I would recommend visiting either in January, February, April, August, or September.

In February, you can get some really stunning snow-covered valleys to shoot. It will be there in other months as well but not as much as in February. In April and August, it is the lush green valleys all around and you will definitely be able to get plenty of good shots.

The rest of the months present plenty of photographic opportunities too but vistas in these 5 months would be at their best.

Best time to Visit Gulmarg with Family

All months I would say. Gulmarg remains open for tourism throughout the year and you can bring your families anytime when you can manage to.

Best time to Visit Gulmarg for Budget Travelers

None to be honest. Gulmarg is really a place a bit on the expensive side and I am speaking this out of personal experience. You will not find a place to stay here for any less than Rs. 2000 to Rs 2,500 during the tourist season.

The food here too is costly. Still, if you were on a budget then I would recommend coming sometime in August. At this time, there aren’t many tourists around and your chances of getting a cheaper hotel deal are better.

If you are on a budget, it will be best to visit Gulmarg on a day trip. Start early from Srinagar, reach Gulmarg, do some sightseeing, and return to Srinagar. Do not plan a night’s stay in Gulmarg.

Weather in Gulmarg

The weather of Gulmarg remains to be very cold during the winter season and pleasant during summer. Below is a month-by-month breakdown of how the weather trends throughout the year; and how the temperature fluctuates.

Please note that the temperature that I am mentioning below is just a historical average. Depending on the weather and time of the day, it may change by several degrees.

Gulmarg in January

It is the peak winter season and you will feel the chill in the wind. Pack all your woolen clothes and a heavy windproof jacket if visiting this time.

The temperature of Gulmarg in January will remain about 0 degrees Celsius on average. At night, it can drop down as low as -5 to -7. It can snow anytime but the amount of snow on the ground will be a bit less towards the earlier part of the month.

Gulmarg in February

January is pretty much the same deal as January. The difference however is that the amount of snow accumulated on the ground will be far greater.

The average high temperature in February will remain around 1 degree Celsius and the lowest at -5 degrees. You will definitely need to keep heavy woolen clothes for visiting at this time.

Gulmarg in March

The average temperature in Gulmarg in March goes up to around 5 degrees Celsius. The night temperature will hover between 0 to -2 degrees Celsius.

Gulmarg in April

Spring arrives and the weather turns pleasant.  The average temperature jumps up to about 10 degrees Celsius. The night temperature will still remain around 2 degrees.

Please note that it can sometimes even snow in April in Gulmarg. You should bring plenty of cotton clothes, some light woolens, and a heavy jacket this month.

Gulmarg in May

This is the time when Gulmarg gets really very crowded with summer vacations in schools and people arriving with their families.

It is not really a good time to visit unless this is the only time you can come. Gulmarg’s average high temperature in May remains around 15 degrees celsius and low at 6 degrees Celsius. Pack a jacket, some light woolens, and plenty of cotton clothes for visiting this time.

Gulmarg in June

June is another not-so-good month. Vistas will be a bit dull and it will still be crowded. Weather however will be pleasant, with the average temperature ranging between 12 to 21 degrees Celsius.

Towards late June, Monsoon arrives in the region and it starts to rain as well. Pack a light jacket and plenty of cotton clothes for visiting this time.

vargis khan

Gulmarg in July

July is the warmest month of the year in Gulmarg with an average temperature ranging between 13 to 23 degrees Celsius. It also officially marks the beginning of monsoon season here, though it doesn’t rain too much in Gulmarg.

The plus point of visiting Gulmarg in July however is that you will rarely find any tourists here at this time. You can get better deals at the hotels which also makes it a good time for budget travelers.

Pack a light jacket and plenty of cotton clothes for visiting this time.

Gulmarg in August

The monsoon season will be in full swing and tourists won’t be too many in number. It is a great time for photography enthusiasts and budget travelers alike.

The temperature in August will average out at 20 degrees high and 12 degrees low. Pack a light jacket and plenty of cotton clothes for visiting this time.

You should bring an umbrella or a raincoat along for both July and August. If possible, pack clothes that can dry faster.

Gulmarg in September

Monsoon starts to recede leaving behind lush green meadows. The weather will start to turn cold again and the average temperature will drop down to 16 degrees high and 8 degrees low. In terms of clothes, however, you can still easily survive with cotton clothes and some light woolens or jackets.

Gulmarg in October

October officially marks the beginning of the winter season in Gulmarg and you will be able to feel it in the air. The average temperature will range between 3 and 14 degrees Celsius.

It is also the time for autumn in Gulmarg and a great time to visit for those eager to see the orange all around. If you are a photographer, then you will be able to get some great Autumn shots in the valleys of Kashmir.

Do note though that the orange effect of Autumn is not that greatly visible in Gulmarg. You will see more of it in Srinagar city itself.

Gulmarg in November

November is not at all a good month to visit Gulmarg. Vistas will be dull all around, there will be no snow and the weather will be very cold with the average temperature ranging between 0 and 8 degrees Celsius.

It also starts to snow at this time in the upper areas near Kangdoor and Apharwat peaks. It is however a good time if you were planning a budgeted trip. With not many tourists around, you may get a good deal on accommodation.

We wish to enjoy the snow and are planning to visit Gulmarg end of February. Two questions: 1) Are there any same-day treks you’d recommend from Gulmarg that take us to beautiful vistas? Easy to moderate difficulty level and be back the same day to our hotel. 2) Can you recommend any beginner-friendly ski-operators/ski-schools for a short 1-2 day experience?

Thank you Uday.

1. Trekking will be tough in Gulmarg in February because of the snow 2. I am sorry but I do not have any contacts with ski-operators.

Day 1 of your Kashmir Itinerary: Arrival in Srinagar

  • Arrive at Srinagar International Airport and transfer to your hotel or houseboat on Dal Lake.
  • Spend the day exploring the beautiful gardens of Srinagar, including Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Bagh, and Chashme Shahi. These meticulously designed gardens feature terraced lawns, vibrant flowerbeds, fountains, and captivating views of the surrounding mountains.
  • Explore Pari Mahal, a historic garden located atop Zabarwan Mountain Range. This terraced garden offers stunning views of the city and the Dal Lake. It is also a great spot to witness the sparkling city lights at night.
  • Take a serene shikara boat ride on Dal Lake and witness the stunning sunset over the water. Explore its floating gardens, intricate houseboats, and charming floating markets. Most people go for the short tour of Dal Lake, however I believe if you truly want to be captivated by the Dal, take a rowboat to Char Chinar. It’s a small island in the middle of the lake. The rowboats taking around 3 hours to and from the island but it’s well worth the peaceful and beautiful journey. If you time it just right, on the way back, as the shikara head home and dusk settles in on the Dal Lake, the lights come on for an enchanting evening spectacle.
