KITESURFING

Tested: AK DURABLE SUPPLY TREK 1000 FRONT WING & AIRUSH TEAM FOIL 135 V2

FOIL: AK DURABLE SUPPLY TREK 1000 FRONT WING

ak trek foil

DECK: AIRUSH TEAM FOIL 135 V2

SIZE: 121 X 46 X 4.9 CM/14.5 L

This was last year’s version of the Team Foil board but remains in the line with version three available for this season. The outline and concept and shape of this nice performing deck make it a great foil set up to learn with and never outgrow. Premium construction with a bamboo layer and Airush’s Carbon Innegra construction, this deck is built to last and be ultra- responsive and comfortable underfoot. It’s a compact shape that has the smart outline, bottom and top shaping that elevates the foil response and makes it comfortable for any level of rider. A nice wide nose for easy touch downs and thinned out bevelled rails make it easy to tip over for water starts. The deck is nice and comfortable with some good concave for added response and grip. The tail narrows out for pushing angles and faster driving foil speeds. This is the right shape for the quick progression curve that riders can experience on the new foils, like the Trek.

Description.

The Trek Foil Series will take you a long way down the path of foiling freedom. Featuring a low aspect fibreglass design for ease of use, the Trek series is best suited to entry level foiling and freeride progression, with its smooth lift, and stability at speed.

The smooth lift engages intuitively while remaining incredibly stable through slow and nervous first flights to powered, confident higher loads and speeds. Smooth and agile when needed around corners it's a fantastic allrounder and the easiest entry to the world of hydrofoiling. It uses the same components as the entire AK range meaning any future upgrades are easy to add component by component.

This means you can go for a smaller front wing of a higher aspect ratio allowing you to ride faster and in stronger winds without the need to upgrade the whole setup.

AK strongly recommend the 2000cm2 wing for beginners and heavier riders to make the learning curve much smoother.

Front Wing:

2000cm: Best suited to entry level foiling and freeride progression, with its smooth lift, and stability at speed.

1600cm: Medium aspect ratio for ease of use, manoeuverability, and versatile performance.

61cm Fuselage: The shorter fuselage offers high manoeuverability and more efficient pumping, with its shorter cadence, compared to the 71cm fuselage.

71cm Fuselage: The longer effective cadence of the 71cm fuselage provides a more stable platform, for general freeride use and progression.

Base Plates:

The streamlined 0 and 1.5 Degree aluminum base plates absolutely minimize drag when you’re getting going or touching down, while creating a solid connection to the mast via the M8 double bolt connection.

12mm slots enable micro trim adjustment when not being used in a track system, while the open ends make the plate much quicker and easier to fit when being used in a track system.

The aluminum masts are available in 5 sizes - 50 / 60 / 70 / 80 / 95cm.

Stabilizers:

Moustache: Ranging in size from 260 – 340, the trimmable moustache rear wings provide directional stability.

Arc Down: The 260 – 300 arc down rear wings are ideal for highly efficient pumping, high speed, and pivoting turns.

Hardware and tools included.

Dave Kay talks AK Durable Supply Co’s foil range at the AWSI

Foiling Magazine's Contributing Editor Steve Sjuggerud joins AK Durable Supply Co's foil designer Dave Kay for an overview of their current foil range at the AWSI trade event.

Products featured: AK Trek AK Tracer AK Plasma

For the full interview transcript, see below.

Hey, I'm now here with Dave Kay, the foil designer for AK Foils. And Dave, tell us what's new in foils with AK for this year.

So with AK, we've developed a very modular range with our foils. We primarily have three performance levels. We have the Trek, which is a low aspect ratio, a very easy, very stable platform with a very low speed lift. So this is really the sort of foil that will get new foilers into the sport and have a very easy to ride platform.

We step up from the Trek series into the new Tracer v2. So this has had a complete new development for 2023. The Tracer is a mid aspect ratio foil. It's a step up in performance, sort of across the range over the Trek. It's faster. It's faster rail to rail and has a much more lively turn for that more progressing style of foiler.

And then finally we have our Plasma, which is our high aspect ratio series. So these are primarily designed for as much glide as we can possibly get. So the sort of foil that'll just go with the minimum amount of power.

And so what sizes do these come in?

So everything comes in a really high range of sizes. So the Tracer is all the way from 700 to 1900 square centimeters. The Trek starts at 1000 and goes all the way to 2000 and the Plasma's from 1000 up to 1600.

Oh, fantastic. And is this a new fuselage design for you guys? It looks unique from here at least.

Yeah, so we have three fuselage lengths for this year. In the past, we've had a 61 and 71 and we've added a 66 just to fill in the gap between those two. Primarily with fuselage length, it's about matching the cadence of your pump to the rider and the speed that you're riding at. And that mid-range 66 just seems to be working better for a lot of our riders. We've also done a bit of work on the nose shape on the fuselages for this season and we've managed to reduce the drag across the range.

Fantastic. And it's the same fuselage for all sizes, so.

Yeah, it's the sort of primary motivation of having a modular system that all the front wings can mount on all the fuselages. We have five different back wings to cover all the sizes and different styles of riding.

And even different shapes within the different sizes.

Correct. So we have a what we call a mustache rear wing, which has the turned up wingtips for more directional stability, and primarily that ships in the completes with the-

Low aspect and mid aspect.

Trek and the Tracer. The Plasma has our arc down rear wing, which loosens up the tail of the setup quite a bit, especially for those sort of slack-

Helps it roll a bit?

Not so much more, that's, Zane was looking for the big slashes off the top, so-

Right, okay.

Is where that design came from, but it also allows the Plasma tail to actually rise quicker, which-

Oh, interesting.

Which aids in pumping.

Right. And so then you mentioned Zane. So what's Zane's favorite foil for his everyday use? And then what's your favorite? Because I mean I'm not trying to, you know Zane is Zane, so.

I can't ride Zane's gear, you know. So what does Zane like to ride? And then what would a more normal guy choose on a everyday?

Zane? The Plasma 1000 is his all day, every day foil.

Yeah, absolutely loves it. For myself, I prefer the Tracer. I like a little bit more stability than what-

Little more user friendly or?

Absolutely. And so actually for kiting, I'm actually really enjoying the 850 this season.

Oh fantastic.

And then just one last thing. I see these two masts have different connections. Is one aluminum or what do you have going on here?

Correct. We have a full range of sizes in both an aluminum mast and a carbon mast.

Oh, fantastic. So anything else you want to share? I think we covered some ground.

Just the one last thing very unique to AK is our adjust-

Oh, a little trim, yeah.

Our rear stabilizer adjustment.

This is, you simply loosen the screws and by sliding the wing forward or back, you can go from zero to-

Adjust the shim, yeah.

Zero to minus four degrees on the rear-

Oh wow, a huge range of adjustment.

Yes. Without the, no need for shims or bits of plastic or having that your stabilizer rear attack set fixed.

And I think people don't realize how much of a difference that can actually make. I mean, it can make or break the performance of a foil really.

Oh, it's absolutely huge in that. And we will, even when testing, we'll keep an Allen key in our pockets. And back to the beach, a little slide, just a couple of millimeters will make a huge difference.

Makes a difference. Absolutely. Yes. Well thank you Dave.

Thank you very much.

  • Description

The smooth lift engages intuitively while remaining incredibly stable through slow and nervous first flights to powered, confident higher loads and speeds. Smooth and agile when needed around corners it's a fantastic allrounder and the easiest entry to the world of hydrofoiling. It uses the same components as the entire AK range meaning future upgrades are easy to add component by component. This means you can go for a smaller front wing of a higher aspect ratio allowing you to ride faster and in stronger winds without the need to upgrade the whole setup.

We strongly recommend the 2000cm2 wing for beginners and heavier riders to make the learning curve much smoother. It's also a front wing you'll keep for lighter winds further down the line. We absolutely love the affordability of this setup and the high end feel of Trek foils on the water - they're smooth, stable and easy to ride. It's a combination that's pretty hard to beat.

WARP FIVE: Elias Toufexis Gives Face to the Breen and L'ak's Unfortunate Gamble

The Discovery actor talks making Star Trek history, denouncing his role as the Scion in pursuit of love and freedom, and more.

SPOILER WARNING: This article contains story details and plot points for the fifth season of Star Trek: Discovery.

Welcome to Warp Five, StarTrek.com's five question post-mortem with your favorite featured talent from the latest Star Trek episodes.

As we near the conclusion of Star Trek: Discovery 's fifth and final season, the U.S.S. Discovery 's lead chasing their Red Directive mission across the galaxy faces its biggest hurdle yet following the events of " Erigah ."

While in the custody of Federation, Moll and L'ak make a desperate gamble to escape their current predicament resulting in devastating consequences. While in his biobed, L'ak self-administers a massive dosage of tricordrazine in order to distract the guards and get them to lower the containment shields so Moll can flee. While his partner and wife manages to take out the guards and seek for a getaway transport for the pair, L'ak's already precarious state takes a turn for the worse. Unfortunately for Moll and Discovery , the Breen Scion is now gone and they've attracted the ire of the Breen Primarch Ruhn who has now lost his key to ascending the Imperium as emperor.

Ahead of the release of "Erigah," StarTrek.com had the opportunity to further explore Star Trek: Discovery actor Elias Toufexis about his love of the franchise, making Star Trek history by revealing the true face of the Breen, his approach to his character L'ak, the extent of the Scion's love for Moll, and more.

Point of First Contact

'Red Directive'

"Red Directive"

StarTrek.com

Like many others, Elias Toufexis first encountered Star Trek in his childhood. "I’ve literally grown up with Star Trek ,” he explains, “I mean that in a different way than it comes across. When I was a kid, I obviously was too young to have watched The Original Series [when it first aired], but it was on all the time. My dad recorded it, and I remember watching it with my dad and his brothers — my uncles — all the time."

"Then we would have these marathons," Toufexis continues. "I don’t remember what channel it was, but they would air full days of Star Trek episodes, like top 10 Star Trek episodes. It always ended with ' The City on the Edge of Forever .' ' The Trouble with Tribbles ’ was also in the mix. I just memorized those shows, particularly the top five Star Trek episodes. Then, when I was a young teenager, I got into The Next Generation , and it grew with me. When I was about 19, Deep Space Nine came along. That was a much more mature show and I was getting more mature, so I grew with that."

"When I started college, Star Trek took a little bit of a backseat compared to when I was growing up," notes Toufexis. "But I still watched Voyager , I still watched Enterprise , and the movies. Star Trek II is part of my DNA. There’s not a frame of that movie I don’t know by heart."

Toufexis then shares another reason why Star Trek was such a huge part of his upbringing. "Another big part of me loving Star Trek was William Shatner. We grew up not only in the same town in Montreal, but we grew up on the same block. Exactly the same block. Obviously, 30 years apart. We grew up on the same street in Monkland. I was on the corner street he was on. I always looked at him as a role model because this guy literally grew up right here and is one of the biggest stars in the world. I always looked up to him because of that, which got mixed in with my adoration for Star Trek . So I’ve been a fan my whole life."

The Breen Scion

[ RELATED : WARP FIVE: Eve Harlow and Elias Toufexis on Star Trek’s Unrelenting Star-Crossed Lovers ]

Unlike Toufexis, his character L'ak had a more difficult upbringing as the Scion of the Breen Imperium . In " Mirrors ," we saw as the direct descendent of the emperor, he turned his back on the Imperium in the name of love to be with Moll, marking them both with a Breen erigah — a blood bounty. Then, in the latest episode, "Erigah," as the Imperium faces discord between warring factions in a bid for the throne, it's revealed that Primarch Ruhn (L'ak's uncle) needs him back in order to make claim of the entire Imperium.

In the flashback in "Mirrors," Moll questions why L'ak spares Ruhn, he reveals that his uncle was who raised him. Toufexis shares his approach on focusing on the familial aspect of the Breen defector, "I kept it mostly personal. I thought about, 'Okay, my uncle means a lot to me, but he's forcing me into this life I don't want.'"

"The face that L'ak chooses is almost like a screw you to his uncle and his heritage," explains Toufexis. "He's, 'I don't want to do this; this is me.' When Moll asks to see his other face, he tells her, 'It's not me. That's not what I am.' I kept it very personal, the history of it all. I discussed it with Michelle [Paradise] and Tunde [Osunsanmi]. For me, I focused on the personal relationship with L'ak's uncle, what I wanted to achieve by getting out of [the Breen Imperium], what Moll means to me, and what her asking me to go with her means to me. That's what I played. There was a little bit of hierarchy, which is shown in ['Erigah'] when L'ak talks about not wanting to be this; it's worse than death, being this slave to the Imperium."

"Not only was Moll an out for him," continues Toufexis, "but he fell in love with her, a new chance at life. In Episode 5, the idea of going with her does not even occur to him until she says it. When he gets into the muck with shooting his fellow Breen, he decides to chance it and go with her."

Giving Face to the Breen

The Breen Primarch faces his nephew L'ak and reprimands him for consorting with lesser beings in 'Mirrors'

"Mirrors"

[ RELATED : Who Are the Breen? ]

The Breen Imperium remains a mysterious yet powerful presence in the Alpha Quadrant and Star Trek lore. With Toufexis' arrival, the Discovery actor not only pulls back the curtain (and helmet) and gives face metaphorically and literally to an indomitable species.

On the opportunities this role presented, following his brief stint as a human convict in the first season, Toufexis proclaims, "When I was offered the role, I was very excited to take it. I would have taken it anyway, no matter what. I thought it was maybe a couple episodes, which I didn't care; I just wanted to be on the show again. I love the show. I love Sonequa [Martin-Green]. I love Doug [Jones]. I've known them for a while, and I just wanted to be on the show. Then when they showed me concept art, and they told me it was Breen, my brain went from, 'I'm really happy to be on the show,' to 'Oh my gosh, now I'm making Star Trek history.'"

"Suddenly, I'm going to be in the technical manuals and the things I collect," continues Toufexis. "I'm going to be in magazines about this stuff. It really blew my mind and got me especially excited, even more than I already was. Being the first [unmasked] Breen historically is amazing and incredible. It's a great feeling, but also as a fan, especially of Deep Space Nine , this is so cool. We get to update the species and what they do. Everyone's been saying the two faces of the Breen, but for me, it's the three faces of the Breen — the one with the helmet, the gelatinous version, and the one L'ak chooses to be, which is inherent to his character, a really big, important choice he makes for himself. The layers of complexity of L'ak because of him being Breen was so enjoyable to play."

Giving Voice to the Non-Federation

On the surface of Salata Major, Moll grips L'ak face as she reassures him in 'Face the Strange'

"Face the Strange"

For Star Trek , the stories predominantly center on the Federation and the members who uphold its values. However, to show the strengths as well as its limitations is to juxtapose their actions is to highlight those who exist outside of the Federation, who don't understand or resist their tenets, or who actively demonstrates themselves as a foil.

Toufexis enjoyed the entire experience, giving a rich and nuanced look to L'ak and Moll's journey alongside co-star Eve Harlow. Their star-crossed lovers sought to outrun the Federation just as much as their erigah .

"Seeing something outside of Discovery and outside of a species like the Breen, it was my favorite part," Toufexis reflects. "It's its own little story, these people. I play a lot of bad guys. For the most part, their backstory is written for you, and you maybe talk a little about it. But it was different [with L'ak and Discovery ]. We got to feel it and show it often. I don't like calling Moll and L'ak 'bad guys.' They’re antagonists for sure, but they're not really bad guys."

"When I saw Episode 5, it had taken us a long time to see it, but Michelle [Paradise] had told me about it," recalls Toufexis. "We were going to go back and talk about their love story, and we get to see them falling in love. That was the best part because I thought, 'This is new.' I don't think there are villains in Star Trek , maybe one-offs in little episodes here or there, but villains don't get to show the reason they're doing this. Because they want love and freedom. If we did our jobs correctly, you want to root for them. You don't want to root for them to kill Burnham or anything, but you want to root for them to get away [from the Federation and Breen Imperium] and be free. That was important to me. The best part about the whole thing was the love story for me and trying to get that across, make people empathize with the characters, was the most important thing."

The Cost of L'ak's Gamble

Following L'ak's passing on a Discovery biobed as Moll emotionally folds over his lifeless body as she craddles in 'Erigah'

"Erigah"

In the care of Dr. Hugh Culber aboard the Discovery , but still in custody of the Federation, as the Breen Imperium closing in on them, the severely injured L'ak makes a bad call in order to give Moll an opportunity to escape.

Explaining how he viewed the events of L'ak's actions in Sickbay in "Erigah," Toufexis states, "That’s what it was — a gamble. I didn't play it as a straight up sacrifice. He didn't know that he was going to die. Just that he knew he could die because he was taking a big chance. Moll's safety and freedom is more important to him than anything else. Of course, he wanted to get out of there [with her]. He even says, 'I'm sorry I took too much. I didn’t mean to do it.' He apologizes because he didn't mean to do it. He knew the odds weren't great, which he hints at when he says, 'You’re not going to like it,' about his plan. They didn’t have a lot of options."

"In retrospect, after watching the episode, I wish I could have played up seeing that she's still there after all this," Toufexis reveals. "That he just wanted to get her out of there, but now that he's dying, recognize that she came back and was there with him. He trusts her; they're married. Even if the plan didn't work out, she could do whatever it takes for their freedom, or her freedom at least. That's why he says, 'You'll be okay.'"

At the end of "Erigah," Moll reveals their married status to Breen Primarch Ruhn in another gambit to escape both the Federation and the erigah 's clutches, and potentially resurrect her late lover. Despite not being privy to Moll's plans, Toufexis ponders how things could have played out if L'ak would have survived, "If he was still alive, he obviously would say, 'No, no, no, we’re not doing this.' But given the situation, he would understand why she was doing this. She has to get away from the Federation."

"While we built Moll and L'ak as maybe they're not so bad, maybe they could join up with the Federation," Toufexis muses. "And the first thing Moll does when L'ak dies is stab the Federation in the back and throw them under the bus [with the Breen Imperium]. He does trust her."

Star Trek: Discovery Revealed Season 5s True Villain (& It's Not The Breen)

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 8 - "Labyrinths"

  • Star Trek: Discovery's Moll emerging as the true season 5 adversary all along.
  • Moll's ruthless ambition to resurrect her husband L'ak threatens the galaxy, plunging the USS Discovery into a perilous battle for control.
  • Despite Moll's deeply personal motivations, Captain Burnham must stop her at all costs to prevent a catastrophic outcome for the United Federation of Planets.

Star Trek: Discovery heads into its series finale with a major upheaval among the Breen that reveals the real Big Bad of season 5 all along. Written by Lauren Wilkinson & Eric J. Robbins and directed by Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour, Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 8, "Labyrinths" pits Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the USS Discovery against the Breen led by Primarch Ruhn (Tony Nappo). Perilously allied with the Breen is Moll (Eve Harlow) , who promised to lead Primarch Ruhn to the Progenitors' ancient treasure.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 8, "Labyrinths" sends the USS Discovery and the Breen to the Badlands, the location of the final clue to the Progenitors' treasure. Captain Burnham retrieves the clue from the Eternal Gallery and Archive by facing her own deepest fears and proving to the program left behind by Betazoid scientist Dr. Marina Derex that Michael is worthy of the Progenitors' technology. Aboard the Breen Dreadnought, however, Primarch Ruhn grows increasingly violent and dishonorable, even after Burnham surrenders the Progenitors' complete treasure map to the Breen. A power struggle between Moll and Ruhn defines who really is the main adversary of Star Trek: Discovery season 5.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Returning Cast & New Character Guide

As Burnham seeks the universe's greatest treasure in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, she'll need help from a host of new and returning characters.

Moll Is Star Trek: Discovery 5s True Villain

Moll was always the one to keep an eye on.

At the end of Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 8, "Labyrinths ", Moll kills Primarch Ruhn and takes control of his faction of the Breen Imperium, the Sixth Flight . Ruhn's sadistic behavior and his lack of honor proved too much for Lieutenant Arisar (Dorian Grey), the Breen who was guarding Moll, and he supported the human's takeover of the Breen after she killed Ruhn. Because Moll is the wife of L'ak (Elias Toufexis), she asserts her control in his name as the Scion of the Breen, making Moll the main villain of Star Trek: Discovery season 5 all along.

Moll revealed she and L'ak were secretly married in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 7, "Erigah".

Moll was introduced as one half of a couple with L'ak, but her importance within Star Trek: Discovery season 5 has only increased. As the daughter of Cleveland Booker's (David Ajala) late mentor, Cleveland Booker IV, Moll's redemption as Book's ersatz 'sister' didn't work out the way he intended. Moll remained unshakable in her devotion to L'ak, and vice versa. Originally, Moll and L'ak's goal was to trade the Progenitors' technology for the Breen living their Erigah blood bounty on their heads. Now, Moll's only focus is to resurrect L'ak with the life-giving power of the Progenitors' treasure.

L'ak's corpse remains on the Breen Dreadnought and he is held in a place of honor as the fallen Scion.

Yet Moll Isnt Really A Star Trek Villain

Moll isn't evil, she just wants to be with l'ak.

However, Moll isn't really a Star Trek villain as others in the franchise have been. Star Trek has its share of diabolical heavies like Khan Noonien-Singh (Ricardo Montalban), Shinzon (Tom Hardy), and Nero (Eric Bana). But Moll isn't out for vengeance, destruction, or even power. Moll simply wants to bring L'ak back to life. It's not clear if Moll has considered what happens if she succeeds and resurrects L'ak. Most likely, Moll hopes that she and L'ak can still leave the Breen and have the freedom to live their lives together, which is all they ultimately wanted.

Moll achieving her goal and bringing back L'ak would still jeopardize billions of lives.

However, greater issues surround Moll's attempt to bring L'ak back with the Progenitors' treasure. Moll giving the Breen control of the ancient technology would be catastrophic to the United Federation of Planets and the galaxy at large. This means that Captain Burnham has to stop Moll from getting what she wants , even if it means L'ak has to remain dead to safeguard the Federation's future from the Breen. Moll isn't a Star Trek villain in a traditional sense, but Moll achieving her goal and bringing back L'ak would still jeopardize billions of lives in Star Trek: Discovery.
