About the author

Marc cushman.

Marc Cushman is an author and Los Angeles based screenwriter and director. His television writing assignments include scripts for Star Trek: The Next Generation, Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction, and Diagnosis: Murder. His feature film credits include Desperately Seeking Paul McCartney, The Magic of Christmas, and In The Eyes Of A Killer. As a writer/producer, Marc created and served as show runner for two TV series: the cult comedy Channel K and its spin-off, the original Bachelor Pad. Marc is the author of the "biography of a TV show," I Spy: A History Of The Groundbreaking Television Series (McFarland & Co., 2007), and the definitive examination of the making of the original Star Trek series, with his 1,700 page, three-volume set,These Are The Voyages, TOS. The first volume -- Season One -- was published in August 2013 by JacobsBrown Press, with Season Two due in late 2013 and Season Three in early 2014.

An interview with Marc Cushman about the writing of "These are the Voyages..."

Marc, what lead you to write "These are the Voyages..?"

I interviewed Gene Roddenberry for a TV special about the Star Trek phenomenon in 1982. He gave me all the scripts and showed me the immense amount of documents he had saved from the production of the series and suggested I take the research for the TV special, expand on it by utilizing the gigantic "show files" and turn it into a book. I interviewed him at that time and again in 1989 when I pitched the story for the episode "Sarek" to him for Star Trek: Next Generation. I was too busy with my own career as a screenwriter and director to begin work on the book until after Gene had passed, but, during those years, I continued to collect interviews from the creative staff (Bob Justman, D.C. Fontana, John D.F. Black), as well as members of the production crew, the cast, and guest players. I finally began writing the Star Trek book in 2007. And it was meant to be one book. Six years later it was roughly 1,700 pages in length, and had to be divided into three books (one for each season of TOS).

What are the most amazing facts that you uncovered?

I'd say that about 30% of the info out there on TOS -- on the internet, in other books and articles -- is false. There is a remarkable amount of folklore about the history of Star Trek, which has been reported in other sources as if true, while so many unknown facts have been left unreported. For one, the writers whose names appear on the screen often did less than 50% of the work on particular episodes. Gene Roddenberry rewrote the first 13 episode of TOS almost entirely. Gene Coon handled much of the rewriting after that and, between himself and Dorothy Fontana, and Roddenberry, a good percentage of the dialogue we heard in every episode came from their typewriters, without credit. It is fascinated to see the memos that flew back and forth between the creative staff as they assessed and reworked the scripts. And to find out how many stories and scripts by famous science fiction authors did not get filmed. We see how the staff thought, what they liked and what they worried about. And there was much more drama behind the making of Star Trek than I'd never realized, even though, as part of my research, I'd read hundreds of articles, all the books written about the making of the series, including the memoirs from all the cast members, and visited all the internet fan sites. There are many stories out there, but they are merely the tip of the iceberg. The show files -- the immense amount of documents saved by Gene Roddenberry and Robert Justman -- tell of all the ups and downs and strange turns that the production went through, week after week. The increasingly restrictive budgets, the battles with the network, cast problems, such as when Leonard Nimoy almost quit the show at the end of the first year over a contract dispute and they had even hired a replacement to be the new resident Vulcan on the Enterprise, and so much more. But the biggest revelation, for me, was the ratings. NBC claimed Star Trek was a failure in the ratings and this myth has been repeated over and over for 45 years without anyone bothering to verify the statement. I licensed all the ratings reports from A.C. Nielsen and include them with each episode. These reports contradict what we have always been told, showing that Star Trek was often the network's top rated Thursday night show and, on many occasions, won its time slot. Even when moved to Friday nights at 8:30 for its second year, which is covered in Book 2, Star Trek again, more often than not, was NBC's top rated show for that night. And yet they tried to cancel it, which was stopped by a massive letter writing campaign from the fans. So the network moved it to Friday's at 10 p.m. for its third year (covered in Book 3), known as "the death shot," the worst time period of the week. And, even then, the ratings were better than we have been led to believe.

Have you heard from any of the original cast since the release of the first book?

Grace Lee Whitney was the first, who said she "loved" the book. Walter Koenig took a copy up on stage at a Star Trek convention and talked about it for a couple minutes, saying it he "guaranteed" it was the best documentation on the making of the original series to be published. A gentleman who worked in the V.I.P. section at the Los Vegas Star Trek convention came to the publisher's booth and told us that William Shatner was carrying a copy of the book around back stage and suggested he come get himself a copy. And Leonard Nimoy called to tell me that he felt the research was "astounding." He said it was "an incredible job; a tremendous amount of good information" and that "the reviews are wonderful and well deserved." That coming from Mr. Spock, impressed by the amount of research. You just can't beat that.

What's in store for fans in books 2 and 3?

Book 1 has been extremely well received, but I feel Book 2 and 3 will be even more surprising, because the story of the making of Star Trek gets far more dramatic; the conflicts and challenges are greater, as the show progressed into its second and than third seasons. As Gene Roddenberry's relationship with NBC deteriorated, and the budgets were slashed, the time slots got worse, and the threats of cancellation grew louder. They would often be filming an episode in the middle of a season without knowing if they would even be making any more, with scripts being prepared to film one week later just in case the network decided to order additional episodes. It was an enormous strain for all of them -- the producers, writers and stars -- to be working under that, with a possible death sentence hanging over their heads. It was really quite cruel the way television operated back then, mostly as a result of an adversarial relationship between a producer and the network. Gene was telling stories the network was not comfortable with -- stories about Vietnam, racism, sexism, religion, over-population, you name it. It is all revealed in the memos, as well the production schedules, budgets, and ratings, episode by episode, as we progress through the "Classic 79." It was a remarkable trek.

Will Queen Anne usher in a new golden age of cruising? A first look as Cunard crowns its new £500m monarch

A crisp spring wind whipped over the River Test, skimming the water that flowed on its path to the Solent. From my open-air viewpoint metres above water, the sunless sky is punctured by one thing only: the hulking red and black funnel that has crowned Cunard ships for almost two centuries.

On Tuesday evening, Southampton welcomed Queen Anne , the latest monarch to join Cunard’s fleet. There was much fanfare in the south-coast city , with crowds watching her sail in through the arcs of a water salute, Cunard’s first female captain, Inger Klein Thorhauge, at the helm. The following day, I was among the first to step onto her decks as she docked at her home port, where the line’s vessels have been based since 1919. In a swell of container ships and the concrete jungle of the port, Queen Anne beamed as a diamond in the rough.

Even the most reluctant of cruisers should appreciate Cunard Line; it’s a brand that transcends the industry and peppers history books. Since its first transatlantic crossing in 1840, its ships have been considered the height of luxury at sea – its designs drawing comparisons to The Ritz hotel at the end of the 19th century. Names, from Charles Dickens and Mark Twain to Judy Garland and David Bowie, have sailed under those famed funnels. Cunard’s Carpathia steamed to the stricken Titanic to rescue survivors in 1912.

Jumping forward to October 2019, I was at the Fincantieri shipyard in Castellammare di Stabia, southern Italy , to watch the steel-cutting ceremony – the cruise equivalent of a ground-breaking celebration – for an unnamed ship that would become Queen Anne . Built at a reported cost of £500m, it’s the company’s first new vessel in 14 years (sailing two years later than planned).

And while the 3,000-capacity Queen Anne (plus space for 1,200 crew members) is the 249th ship to sail under Cunard’s flag, what makes this such a milestone is her joining the coveted ranks of Cunard’s ‘queens’, which themselves hold a special place in cruise culture, as well as British consciousness.

She expands the current trio – Queen Mary 2 , Queen Elizabeth , Queen Victoria – into a quartet, and is an echo of its regal predecessors. Two are now decommissioned and sit as floating hotels ( Queen Elizabeth 2 in Dubai , Queen Mary in California ); the original Queen Elizabeth retired to Florida before sailing to Hong Kong , a blaze destroying it in the harbour in 1972.

The challenge for Cunard with Queen Anne has been to successfully juggle that heritage with modernity – something that has been done with aplomb across the 13 decks. While the exterior does little to push boundaries, inside is a sensitive homage to the traditions given contemporary zeal. The concept began in the line’s archives at the University of Liverpool , rooting this new addition firmly in the past. Old brochures, fabrics and posters gave inspiration but designers – including London’s David Collins Studio – were determined not to end up with a pastiche.

Art Deco nods are found across public spaces, such as the curvaceous central ballroom, and the sheen of metals is paired with a palette of more muted – and more modern – colours. Gaudy carpet patterns, always a concern on cruise ships, cannot be found; my favourite were the blue designs that seem influenced by the water surrounding the hull or the air that would have blown the sails of bygone ships. While anti-cruise snobbery often sees noses turned up at ship accommodation, aboard Queen Anne , the calming tones sit against wooden furnishing and the Art Deco style seeps in; if this was on land it would be a hotel at the higher end of the scale.

Some of the best touches are clear attempts to bring the ship into the 21st century. Take the gallery, where work by Banksy was revealed on Wednesday – yours for a cool £125,000 – to sit alongside pieces from Thierry Guetta, better known as the LA -based Mr Brainwash. There’s simply no room for mass-produced dross in the “reimagined, elegant spaces”, as Cunard president Katie McAlister puts it. While elements such as the white-glove afternoon tea service remain, they’re bolstered by a Himalayan sea salt sauna or DJ booth around the pool.

Even the most reluctant of cruisers should appreciate Cunard Line; it’s a brand that transcends the industry and peppers history books

A huge coup is the work from chef Michel Roux Jr, who ran the two Michelin-starred Le Gavroche in London before it closed in January. He has revamped the offering inside this Golden Lion, Cunard’s pub-at-sea concept that can be found on all the ‘queens’, adding what he called “little details that make a huge difference”. He labelled the haddock scotch eggs (I think best served with a pint of Cunard Gold lager) as “bang on”. Rubbed his belly talking about getting the fish and chips just right.

For me, the most exciting thing is that the chef has brought with him a slightly tweaked version of the laden, three-cheese stovetop toasties from The Wigmore (another pub setup, at the bottom of The Langham hotel in central London , that Michel was tasked with elevating from the ordinary). The other girls in the fleet need not be jealous; Michel’s approach is being rolled out across the fleet. If you want a sublime dining experience on the water, there are two Le Gavroche at Sea residencies (with Michel on board and behind the pass) on Queen Anne this year, plus two more on Queen Mary 2 .

As for today, the debutant is getting ready to leave Southampton this evening, sailing to La Coruna in Spain and Lisbon in Portugal (with days at sea bookending each port) before returning home to England . Then it’s off to the Canary Islands before the 14-night British islands itinerary – including a stop for a naming ceremony in Liverpool, the spiritual home of Cunard. From then, the Med and the fjords beckon; however, cruise fans tell me they’ve got their eyes set on Queen Anne ’s maiden world voyage in 2025, stretching over 111 days.

Waking up yesterday after a night moored in Southampton, I stepped out onto the balcony to more of the same rain. What warmed me – even more than the previous long night of champagne and martinis – was the thought of voyages yet to come.

I’m too young to know the ‘golden age’ of cruising, but Cunard has taken a step forward into its renaissance. Long live Queen Anne – and happy holidays at sea for all who sail on her.

Roman-Era Ship Was Carrying Jugs Full of Fish Sauce When It Sank 1,700 Years Ago

Discovered in the summer of 2019, the Ses Fontanelles wreck likely ran aground sometime during the fourth century

Sarah Kuta

Daily Correspondent

Jugs underwater

Roughly 1,700 years ago, a ship sank to the bottom of the Mediterranean near present-day Spain. Not long after it sank, the Roman-era vessel became covered in sand and sediment, which preserved the ship and many of its contents.

Now, researchers are unraveling some of the wreck’s mysteries, including the cargo it was transporting on its ill-fated final voyage. When it sank during the fourth century, the vessel was carrying a rare culinary delicacy: a fermented fish sauce known as liquamen , or garum .

Researchers described their fishy findings in a new paper published in the journal Archaeological and Anthropological Sciences .

Archaeologists found the umami-packed condiment in many of the 300 sealed pottery jugs, known as amphorae , that went down with the ship. They also identified bits of fish bones in some, which suggests the liquamen was made with both anchovies and sardines.

Other amphorae also held edible delights, including olive oil, wine or vinegar, and possibly olives preserved in a wine reduction sauce. Each jug was labeled with a painted inscription that identified the vessel’s contents. Archaeologists also found grape vines, reeds and other woody plants likely meant to help protect the amphorae during the journey.

Among the wreckage, researchers also identified ropes, shoes, a wooden drill and a coin from Roman Siscia embedded within the wood that connected the mast to the hull. The coin, which was made under the rule of emperor Constantine the Great, is consistent with Roman ship-blessing rituals. The coin also indicates that the ship was built after 320 C.E., which matches up with previous age estimates.

Researchers also took samples of the ship’s wood. To make the vessel, Roman shipbuilders used pine, as well as a selection of harder woods, including cypress, olive and bay laurel.

Underwater archaeologists investigating shipwreck

Together, all of the findings suggest that the ship departed from the area of present-day Cartagena on the southeastern Iberian Peninsula.

Known as the Ses Fontanelles wreck , the ship was exposed by a strong storm in July 2019. It’s located near one of the most popular tourist beaches on Mallorca, the largest of Spain's Balearic Islands.

Just a few feet of water cover the wreck, which is situated several miles from Palma, the capital of Mallorca. The shallow depth presented several challenges. For starters, researchers were worried about looters stealing from or damaging the ship. On top of that, the shallowness made excavations tricky because strong winds caused waves that stirred up the sediment on the bottom of the sea. The waves also rocked a work platform installed to help archaeologists investigate the ship.

It’s not clear what caused the vessel to sink. However, based on its location, archaeologists suspect it ran aground on a sandbar. The ship is 39 feet long and 16 to 19 feet wide.

The vessel is significant because it's the “only Late Roman shipwreck we know of so far from the area of Carthago Spartania [and] one of a few from the fourth century in the Mediterranean," says study co-author Miguel Ángel Cau Ontiveros, an archaeologist at the University of Barcelona and the Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies, to Live Science ’s Tom Metcalfe.
