Bardstown however, just outside of Louisville, is home to the yearly Kentucky Bourbon Festival because around a quarter to a third of all bourbon whiskey is made in Louisville and its surroundings. Which is why Louisville’s Bourbon Trail tours are extremely popular with visitors to the ‘Ville’. Most of the bourbon distillery tours in Louisville depart from the city center and offer the opportunity to learn about the whiskey making process. And of course, it’d be no fun if there weren’t plenty of opportunities to sample the end product along the way.

Many a household name brand of bourbon happens to hail from the wider Louisville area of Kentucky. With over 15 different distilleries opening their doors to curious visitors along the Bourbon Trail, it’s tempting to try as many as possible. This half-day tour will get you to three distilleries, where you’ll learn more about the creation of whiskies such as Maker’s Mark, Wild Turkey and Woodford, among others. Bourbon Distillery Tours and Tastings on the Bardstown Bourbon Trail

The small city of Bardstown, roughly 45 minutes south of central Louisville, has a long history of whiskey production dating back to the late 18 th century. It makes for the perfect Louisville bourbon tour, thanks to its various distilleries, bourbon museum and long-standing taverns. This excursion, which generally only runs on Thursdays, tours one distillery then provides tastings and two others, while leaving all the driving to your guide so that you can sample as much whiskey as you’d like. She really listened to what you are interested in and is wonderful at curating a great experience. We packed the day with all the distilleries we were hoping for. My husband knows a lot and I know very little and there was something for both of us. The breakfast at the chateau was beautiful and so much fun. Her house is 100 years old and packed with bottles to look at and try. She taught us how to properly nose and sip for tastings. We went to several experiences and they were add l phenomenal. We were referred to her by American Express and while Angelique was a little hard to get an hold we soon understood why. I didn’t know anything about bourbon but we were celebrating our 30th anniversary and the bourbon trail was a surprise for my husband. We had an amazing time and I totally fell in love with bourbon. Not only was the owner pushing edibles and marijuana when we were brought to the her private home and I left with dog or cat hair all over my black cashmere! While we had a hiccup with our airport pickup, Angelique and her crew went above and beyond to ensure that we had the most memorable long weekend. Our first day we were with Keith and went east on the trail from Louisville. The day started however with one of the best breakfasts we have ever had at the Chateau. Angelique also showed us her bourbon collection - which is mind blowing. Tuwanas cooking, which included the best fried chicken, breakfast wraps, and sausage balls, was incredible. The only bad part is that we couldn't take her home with us. She is truly talented and the spread was amazing! After breakfast we got to do a tasting with Angelique where we learned the proper way to try/taste bourbon. After this we were off for the trail! Keith started as our driver but left as our friend. We were able to hunt some special allocations from a few distilleries, which was fun then visited several distilleries. There was a hiccup at lunch but I think that was on the place where lunch was ordered and not on the tour company. However, the food we did get was delicious. On day two, we headed south and were guided by Angelique. Her wealth of knowledge is very impressive. We had another great day. The best part about Angelique's personalized itinerary is that we had a mixture of things that we did. From cocktail classes to blending classes to tours to just doing a tasting, we were able to to do so much. This was great because my husband is a self proclaimed "connoisseur" while my mom had very little experience with bourbon. We had an absolute blast. We easily tasted 50 bourbons over a two day period and managed to bring home 25 bottles (thanks to Angelique she also had a spare suitcase and bubble wrap to help our efforts traveling home with all the bourbon we could have dreamed of). All in all, I would highly recommend Angelique and her team. They have a boutique operation that makes everything much more personalized than just another tour. The 101 class bourbon class made us look like we knew what we were doing. We knew nothing prior. Haha. Woodford reserve has great grounds and we have a renewed love of the double oak. The cocktails at castle and key were so interesting and flavorful, never expect rye to go with chi or guys to like gin more than the bourbon. We kept going. Glenn’s Creek a must stop we laughed and said it looked like a scene out of Texas chain saw massacre but ended up with a bottle of Cafe Ole. Buffalo Trace for a quick tasting and ended the day at Whiskey Thief sipping from barrels again in a barn set on 125 acres with live music and fire pits. Angelique asked us what we would be talking about a year from now…. Basically we said we’d be back because we had so much fun. We went hard the night before at the Laundry Cellar Speakeasy so had a rough start getting going. Angelique was able to adjust the schedule and came with the bourbon rescue kit! Instead of breakfast and bourbon it became brunch and bourbon. The chef even fixed a vegan option for one of the guys.
