(More than half are home to fewer than 10,000 people , and some claim populations in the triple digits.)

Characteristic are the many well-preserved Biedermeier houses and the small, romantic streets that are reminiscent of a village.  The Christmas Market  in Spittelberg is particularly well known.  The cultural offerings are also diverse, as numerous artists and performers have settled here.

  • How to get there:   Spittelberg can be easily reached via the Volkstheater underground or tram station, as well as the Museumsquartier underground station.

Rotenturmstraße is located between St. Stephen's Cathedral  and Schwedenplatz.  The two-horse carriages, with which you can make a round trip, are particularly popular with visitors from all over the world.

In addition to some fashion chains such as Intimissimi and Blue Tomato, numerous smaller shops and boutiques as well as numerous souvenir shops invite you to stroll around.

Numerous restaurants allow you to take a break, and there are also ways to satisfy your hunger in the quieter side streets.   If you want, you can snack on slices in the Manner flagship store at St. Stephen's Cathedral, if you're thirsty, you can take a break in the famous Hard Rock Café, which invites you to visit with its spacious outdoor terrace and lively bar.

Wollzeile is just a few minutes' walk from Stephansplatz.  In the small alley there are numerous small shops, especially bookstores and stationery shops.   There are also tea and natural products and of course fashion.

The Ultimate Guide to Shopping in NYC’s SoHo Neighborhood

N estled between Houston and Canal Streets, SoHo (short for “south of Houston Street,” for the uninitiated) exudes a charm that attracts locals and tourists alike to explore its cobblestone streets and historic cast-iron buildings. The vibrant neighborhood weaves together a tapestry of boutiques, galleries and designer stores, each offering a unique glimpse into the pulse of contemporary style. And it’s not just the shopping — stand on the corner of Prince and Greene on any given day, and you’ll witness some of the most stylish individuals you’ll ever encounter. From Parisian fashion houses showcasing the latest menswear trends to artisanal denim stores, brand flagships and luxury fragrance brands, SoHo stands as a premier shopping destination, boasting an array of stores that cater to every taste and preference. Exploring all that it (and its sibling, Nolita) offers could take months, so we decided to simplify the process. Here are 18 of our favorite SoHo NYC shopping destinations.

Acne Studios

Acne Studios, the Stockholm-based fashion house, helped redefine contemporary style via their elevated apparel, footwear and accessories, especially their staple denim and leather biker jackets. In 2021, Acne unveiled its stunning, newly redesigned location. The store embodies Acne’s commitment to modernity and attention to detail, with interiors that epitomize Jonny Johansson’s (the designer and co-founder) distinctive aesthetic. Expanding to 7,000 square feet, this spacious store is the brand’s largest yet, offering a curated selection of chic tailoring, denim, leather goods and footwear. The design concept embraces juxtaposing sharp-edged surfaces, and the mint hue accents original industrial features, paying homage to the building’s heritage.

33 Greene St

It can be tricky to find performance garments that are also stylish, but AETHER has mastered the art of seamlessly blending form and function. The brand crafts high-end apparel from sleek, waterproof, wind-resistant outerwear to everyday chore jackets and ski gear; each piece looks just as at home in the city as it does in the great outdoors. After a pandemic-induced closure, the AETHER NYC store reopened last December, showcasing the brand’s latest collections of performance-driven outerwear and premium outdoor essentials. Designed by Paris-based Thierry Gaugain, the store is characterized by wood and LED-lit crates, complemented by the brand’s signature white and gray color palette adorning the walls and floor.

81 Grand St

Aimé Leon Dore

Aimé Leon Dore has long established itself as an “it” brand, garnering attention for its blend of streetwear influences and high fashion sensibilities. ALD is known for versatile wardrobe essentials, from elevated hoodies and tees to impeccably-tailored outerwear and trousers, emphasizing quality, comfort and understated luxury. The ALD store is a curated space where fashion, art and culture converge. Adorning the racks is a mashup of lux streetwear — think nylon jackets, pique polos and baseball caps. With herringbone wood floors, French-inspired crown molding, marble display tables and custom brass rails, the ambiance mirrors a chic hotel lobby rather than a traditional retail space. This thoughtful environment features an inviting café.

224 Mulberry St

Alex Mill specializes in exceptionally stylish, elevated renditions of wardrobe staples. Originating from a passionate mission to create the quintessential shirt, Alex Drexler established the brand in 2012, igniting a quick following for its craftsmanship, premium fabrics and precisely tailored cuts. Focusing on timeless elegance rather than fleeting trends, Alex Mill interprets iconic pieces like denim shirts, chinos, cardigans and chore jackets, catering to guys who value design, quality and enduring style. The recent addition of a denim collection complements the brand’s curated selection of handpicked treasures, including vintage Levi’s sourced by the creative director, artisanal Japanese socks and vintage belts.

77 Mercer St

Bloomingdale’s

While this list predominantly features singular-brand boutiques, we would be remiss not to mention Bloomingdale’s iconic SoHo store, which opened in the spring of 2004. The six-level Bloomingdale’s is about half the size of a typical location, featuring a men’s store, cosmetics, accessories, jewelry, contemporary designer brands, shoes and a Forty Carrots café. It adopts a boutique-style approach compared to its 59th Street counterpart, yet its curated selection spans from Parisian luxury like Balmain to everyday boho essentials like Birkenstocks. Notably, its denim assortment is exceptional. With its diverse range of brands and attentive staff, it’s a must-visit destination for shoppers seeking both style and service.

504 Broadway

Blue in Green

Since 2006, Blue in Green has been a cornerstone of Japanese selvage denim culture, originating with their storefront at 8 Greene Street. Featuring a wide selection of premium denim from esteemed Japanese and American brands — as well as rare Japanese luxury brands like Kapital and Beams Plus, trad brands J. Press and Gitman Bros, and a variety of other niche artisanal labels — Blue In Green caters to denim enthusiasts seeking labels that are hard to find elsewhere. In addition to denim, the store offers a thoughtfully-curated range of complementary apparel and accessories.

8 Greene St

Under the creative direction of Hedi Slimane, Celine embodies a razor-sharp rock and roll interpretation of French sophistication. The Celine SoHo store’s sleek and minimalist interior serves as an ideal backdrop for showcasing the label’s coveted collections. From impeccably tailored clothing to iconic handbags and accessories, each item on display exemplifies Celine’s dedication to superior craftsmanship. Whether perusing the latest runway pieces or seeking tailoring or outerwear with an edge, visitors to the store can shop for edgy Parisian luxury at its finest.

22 Crosby St

Corridor is a New York-based independent brand inspired by nature, music, spirituality and the vibrancy of city life. I first fell in love with the their crochet knit cardigans, which feature interesting colorways and patterns and have since become one of the brand’s calling cards. Corridor’s textiles and garments are meticulously crafted in-house, utilizing ethical and environmentally sustainable workshops to ensure quality weaving, knitting and sewing. The result is an elevated take on knitwear, t-shirts, trousers and outerwear, precisely what every Brooklyn cool guy wants to wear. The SoHo flagship store embodies the brand’s essence, reflecting founder Dan Snyder’s eclectic arts and crafts style. Showcasing hand-picked antique furnishings, highlights include an 1800s drapery table from Hudson, NY, and a Mexican folk art sculpture from a warehouse in Connecticut.

245 Elizabeth St.

Cutler and Gross

Since its inception in 1969 as a bespoke eyewear maker, each Cutler and Gross frame is meticulously made using the finest raw materials by experienced craftspeople in the brand’s Cadore, Italy, factory. Set to unveil its new store location in May, the boutique will embrace London-inspired finishes, integrating curated fabrics, textures and finishes like concrete, wood and hardwearing fabrics reminiscent of London travel. Drawing inspiration from the original flagship store in Knightsbridge Green, the new location will also showcase iconic props by renowned London designers from the ’60s and ’70s, With a diverse array of sunglasses, from classic tortoiseshell designs to aviators, tinted lenses and bold oversized frames, Cutler and Gross offers eyewear that transcends mere accessories to become true works of art.

Where to Shop Vintage Fashion in New York City

Double RL garments draw inspiration from the hard-working lifestyles of ranchers, sailors and soldiers from the early 1900s. Crafted meticulously from the world’s finest materials — think well-worn denim, rich leather, suede and soft flannel — they show a luxury vintage aesthetic unlike any other label. Housed in a rustic 1867 building initially built for tobacco production, the Double RL store embodies the vibe of a turn-of-the-century Manhattan mercantile shop. In its expansive space, curated selections of vintage jewelry, clothing and homewares mingle with Double RL styles.

381 W Broadway

Drake’s has been instrumental in making trad garments a staple of hip menswear, particularly among the younger and sartorially-minded. Drake’s garments inject new energy into well-worn staples, from corduroy blazers to Shetland crew sweaters to their iconic printed scarves featuring motifs reminiscent of ancient tapestries. Like the clothing, store embodies a casual yet sophisticated atmosphere and is a welcome addition to the SoHo NYC shopping scene. Vintage furniture sourced from Lichen in Queens adds to the ambiance, complemented by industrial trolleys, platforms and storage units creatively showcasing the season’s collection, collaborations and New York exclusives. The made-to-order pavilion offers a bespoke display of suits, evoking the ambiance of Drake’s flagship on Savile Row. With its commitment to craftsmanship, premium materials and heritage appeal, Drake’s makes garments meant to be cherished and worn for years.

327 Canal St

Hive & Colony

The fit is critical in tailoring, and nothing compares with a custom suit, essential for formal events, weddings and even daily wear. Initially launching with the innovative Tailor Truck pop-up concept before establishing a brick-and-mortar location, Hive & Colony offers some of NYC’s finest custom suits, all at an accessible price point. Tailored to the client’s specifications, each suit represents meticulous craftsmanship and uses advanced measurement techniques. The process starts with selecting from an extensive catalog of more than 500 imported European fabrics and personalization options abound, from monogramming on the collar to button selection. The experience is personalized from start to finish, with a stylist by your side and a glass of whiskey in your hand from the initial consultation through to the final fitting.

109 Mercer Street

M. Crow is a handmade home goods and clothing store, epitomizing a labor-of-love ethos. The SoHo location traces its roots back to Lostine, Oregon, a quaint town with just 300 residents where it operated as a general store by the Crow family for more than a century. The shop transitioned to new ownership in 2012 under Tyler Hays, offering an eclectic array of products, ranging from jeans and hand-painted sweatshirts to bolo ties and leather carriers. Its inventory extends to kitchen essentials like ceramic pitchers, bowls and mugs, among other household items. M. Crow is a diamond of American craftsmanship and authenticity, and its wares are built for a lifetime of utility that will only improve with age.

16 Howard St

Osswald NYC

Osswald is arguably the finest niche skincare and fragrance destination in NYC. Established in 1921 in Zurich, Osswald re-opened its sole U.S. store in NYC in 2023. Renowned for its selection of hard-to-find Italian and French brands — including Widian, New Notes, Fragrance Du Bois and exclusive collaborations with my personal favorite, Profumum Roma — Osswald is a haven for olfactory connoisseurs. Their high-end skincare products include brands like Augustinus Bader, Orris Paros and MBR skincare, and you’ll also notice a luxe makeup selection from the likes of Victor De Souza (perfect for shopping with your partner ). The store is stunningly laid out, featuring a “fragrance wall” to admire before selecting your skincare regimen or signature scent.

11 Best Places for Shopping in Florence

By Nicky Swallow

Italy Florence Shop Officina ProfumoFarmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella

The wonderful thing about shopping in Florence is that it's contained; the centro storico, or historic center, is small enough that you can cover the whole place—and its shops—on foot. And, while many of the international designer labels have store frontage in the city center (mostly on chi-chi Via Tornabuoni), it's the hidden away independent boutiques and ateliers, where centuries-old artisan traditions continue to thrive, that make the city's retail scene so compelling. Step into these shops, and you'll find everything from exquisite bespoke shoes and tailored clothing to jewelry, leather goods, artisan-made perfumes, and hand-bound books (not to mention a palate-perplexing variety of food and wine).

There's no less intrigue at the independent clothing and jewelry boutiques in the Santo Spirito and Santa Croce neighborhoods, either, and the markets, with their decidedly non-designer finds, are also well worth exploring. Whether you're all about quality, or just want to pocket something with a story behind it, we've got you covered: here are our picks for the 11 best places for shopping in Florence.

Italy Florence Shop Aquaflor Firenze

AquaFlor Firenze Arrow

Housed in a ravishing vaulted space—formerly the stables of a grand, Renaissance-era palazzo—this shop has a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it entrance. But once you're through the modest doorway, you'll find yourself immersed in the sensual fantasy world of the legendary perfumery. Master perfumer Nicola Bianchi founded his business in Lucca before moving to this space in Florence’s Santa Croce neighborhood, the only outlet for his collections, which are all beautifully displayed in mahogany-and-glass cabinets or laid out on antique tables. It's as much a feast for the eyes as it is for the olfactory nerve.

Default

The Mall Firenze Arrow

Culture vultures pack into the Uffizi gallery; fashionistas flock to The Mall. This high-end designer outlet village, set in the lovely Tuscan countryside just south of Florence, runs regular hour-long shuttle buses from Florence’s Santa Maria Novella train station. Well-laid out with wooden walkways, green lawn, and plenty of space, the complex can get very crowded at peak times (during high tourist season and sales) with long lines forming outside the most popular shops, including Prada, Gucci, and Balenciaga; but it's all worth the fuss if you're lucky enough to bag that pair of Ferragamo shoes for cheap.

Angela Caputi Giugiù Arrow

Inspired by classic Hollywood movies, Angela Caputi started her costume jewelry business in Florence in the 1970s and managed to stay true to her original artisanal principles even as she rose to international fame. She continues to use resins made in Italy, and the pieces themselves are still assembled at her flagship in the Santo Spirito neighborhood—where Caputi herself is often found. With her shock of white hair and chunky jewelry, she's easily recognizable and happy to chat. That’s an experience you won’t get anywhere else.

Italy Florence Shop Stefano Bemer

Stefano Bemer Arrow

The late Stefano Bemer opened his bespoke men’s shoe business in the San Frediano neighborhood of Florence in 1983. (He famously took on Daniel Day-Lewis as an apprentice for ten months in 1999.) After Bemer’s death in 2012, the brand was acquired by Tommaso Melani, director of the famous Scuola di Cuoio leather school. Now housed in a deconsecrated chapel in the eastern Oltrarno, the brand still upholds Bemer’s initial quest to create perfect, stunning footwear. All shoes are designed and made in-house with high-quality leathers from all over the world (South African ostrich, Tuscan calfskin, American pony skin, and U.S. alligator), and all components—insoles and outsoles, heels and welts, oak shanks and cotton laces—are handmade by a team of local artisans.

Il Torchio Arrow

Part shop and part studio, Il Torchia is a brightly lit Oltrarno workshop that showcases the traditional art of bookbinding—updated for modern times. You'll find albums, photos frames, and other gifts made of Florentine leather, in addition to handmade marbled papers and canvas, all of which incorporate techniques that have been practiced in Florence for centuries. Some of the more traditional designs haven't changed since the 1980s, when the shop opened; others (books with olive wood as the front cover and leather-bound books held shut with brightly-colored elastic bands, for example) are more contemporary.

Il Bisonte Arrow

Now a global brand with outposts all over the world, Il Bisonte was founded in Florence in 1970 by Wanny di Filippo; this is the original shop, which still stands on the same site of the ex-stables of Palazzo Corsini in the heart of the city. The deeply satisfying smell of good-quality leather hits you as you walk into the vaulted rooms, which are filled with chunky bags and accessories sporting the brand's iconic bison logo. Gorgeous briefcases and leather travel cases cost between €750 and €850 (about $864 to $979); women’s shoulder bags cost around €350 (about $403). Expensive, yes—but everything is handmade by artisans in or near Florence from butter-soft cowhide, and is designed to last a lifetime.

Italy Florence Shop Richard Ginori

Richard Ginori 1735 Arrow

Ginori's Florence flagship has stood on the same site, just a few blocks from the Piazza di Santa Maria Novella, since 1802 (its factory, just outside Florence, was established in 1735), and was famously re-vamped in 2014 when it was acquired by Gucci. Today, it's one of the loveliest stores in the city—nearly 5,400 square feet of exquisite things—and one that's almost too beautiful to enter. Many designs, which are arranged in rooms meant to mimic an elegant home (the dining room, the drawing room, etc.), have changed little over the years. Pieces can be pricey—one plate in the Paesaggi, or Landscapes, collection goes for over $1,000—but come during the occasional sales, and you can find items from the factory for ridiculously low prices.

Italy Florence Shop Officina ProfumoFarmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella

Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella Arrow

One of the oldest herbal pharmacies in the world, the Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella now has locations in London, New York, and Tokyo, among others; but it was founded in this beautiful frescoed chapel in 1221 by Dominican monks and opened to the public in 1612. As soon as you walk in, the scent of the signature potpourri—a mix of herbs and flowers from the Tuscan hills—fills the air. Mahogany-and-glass cabinets in the main vaulted, frescoed chapel are filled with glass bottles of oils and perfumes, skin and body lotions, the brand's exquisite trademark soaps (in rose, pomegranate, iris, and more). Visit the back room to see the brand's famous herbal concoctions: Baby Relax for a fretful infant, tisanes, or herbal teas (like the excellent Mouse Ear Hawkweed), and the famous Acqua di Santa Maria Novella elixir, an 'anti-hysteria' remedy.

Madova Arrow

The Donnini family has been making gloves by hand since 1919, and this store—which opened in 1954 next to its factory, just off the Ponte Vecchio—is still the only place where you can buy the accessories in person (you can also order online). A squeeze of a shop, it's entirely lined with shelves and drawers, all stacked with neatly packaged gloves in every shape, size, and color. But don't touch; an assistant will ask what you're looking for, measure your hand, and root around among the stock until they find the perfect pair. For men, there's a toasty pair lined with lambskin; for women, a fancy-pants pair of black leather gloves with a black- and fuchsia-striped ruffle is the must-buy.

Italy Florence Shop Eataly Firenze

Eataly Firenze Arrow

The Florence branch of Eataly (which now has stores around the world, in the United States, Japan, Turkey, Brazil, Qatar, Russia, and more) is located just steps from the Duomo and offers the very best of Italian food and wine. You can come here for coffee, lunch, or dinner; for grocery shopping; or for cooking and wine-tasting courses. It’s a one-stop-shop for great Italian produce, and it's also a great place to buy gifts and souvenirs. A mezzanine houses a restaurant with everything from potato-stuffed tortelli to burgers; upstairs, the restaurant FAC (short for Fast and Casual) does good, wholesome food quickly. Expect traditional Tuscan specialities like pappardelle with chicken livers, sage, and lemon, and braised pork ribs.

Italy Florence Shop Atelier Scriptorium Firenze

Atelier Scriptorium Firenze Arrow

At Scriptorium, a tiny atelier-shop hidden off the imposing courtyard of the aristocratic Palazzo Pucci, handcrafted books and stationery are the specialty. You can choose from albums bound in leather and filled with handmade paper; exquisite leather boxes and desk accessories; calligraphy pens with a variety of nibs; wax seals to personalize your correspondence (you can have one made with your initials); silver-tipped walking sticks; magnifying glasses, and much more. All items can be customized, and only the very best local artisans are employed. Luckily, you know you're getting the best of the best: Scriptorium works with many of Florence’s most high-profile families and five-star hotels, including the Four Seasons.

If you love to shop and are planning a trip to France, or you’re just curious, here are France’s main shopping streets where shops are thriving thanks to tourists and French alike who flock to them with open wallets.

Main Shopping Streets In France You Need To See

In case you didn’t know, there’s a retail apocalypse going on in North America—the mass closing of brick-and-mortar retail stores since 2010 like Macy’s, Toys R Us, Ralph Lauren, and the list goes on.

However, shops are thriving on French Main streets in France  despite rents costing shop owners a fortune.

Main Street is a generic phrase used to describe the principal street, traditionally the site of shops, banks, and other businesses. In the UK, the closest equivalent is High street.

Here is a list of 18 popular shopping streets in France, which, according to real-estate accountancy firm Cushman & Wakefield’s 29th edition of “ Main Streets Across the World,” also have the highest rents in France. So, you know they must be raking in some serious cash.

Best shopping streets in Paris, France

Paris is recognized internationally as one of the world’s most important fashion capitals of the world, so it should come as no surprise that 9 of the 18 most visited shopping streets in France are located in central Paris. All within walking distance of each other.

1.  Avenue des Champs Elysées

Paris, France:  €13,255 per sq.m. per year (US $1,407 /sq. ft. / yr.).

At the top of this list is the world-famous Avenue des Champs Elysées. A t  $1,407 per sq foot per year, a 1,000 sq. ft. space could cost retailers as much as USD 1.4 million a year, making this THE MOST EXPENSIVE stretch of real estate in France.

Although it’s possible to stroll the length of this 2km (1.25 miles) avenue, which links the world-famous Arc de Triomphe on one end to the Place de la Concorde on the other in a single afternoon, it usually takes much longer thanks to the shops and restaurants located up and down this iconic Avenue.

France shopping strees: Champs Elysee Shopping Street

Champs Elysée Shopping:

Shopping on the Champs Elysées is a mixed bag. As a result of high rents, you’re unlikely to find small, quirky independent shops. Instead, you’ll find a sprinkling of pricey cafés, tourist trap restaurants, travel agencies, banks, main street or high street shops like Disney and Nike and, of course, luxury flagship stores like Cartier and Louis Vuitton.

This is a huge tourist destination, and you’ll probably see more tourists than actual French people, but it’s still a must-see.

2. Avenue Montaigne

Paris, France: €9,573 per sq.m. per year (US $1,016 sq. ft. / yr.).

Measuring just 615 metres long (672 yards), Avenue Montaigne is a short little side street off the world-famous Champs-Elysées in Paris, France.

Plan on mostly window shopping unless you’re prepared to spend a lot of money because this little street is home to mainly famous luxury brands. Giorgio Armani, Chanel , Gucci, Givenchy & Dior all have a store here.

The Golden Triangle

The Golden Triangle or Triangle d’Or is traditionally an upper-crust neighbourhood in the 8th arrondissement known not only for its luxury shopping and upscale cafés but also for its luxury real estate apartments and duplexes in prestigious nineteenth-century Haussmannian buildings.

Purchasing a luxury apartment within the Golden Triangle is considered a status in itself, but it will cost you.

To give you an idea, a two-bedroom, 130 sq meter flat(1,400 sq ft) in the golden triangle, like the one pictured below, can cost as much as 2.6 million euros (over 3 million USD). And to rent a flat similar to this would cost you between 3 to 4 thousand Euros per month. (3,500 to 4,700 USD per month).

But size doesn’t matter because although the shopping is limited on this street, there is a large square at one end: La Grande Place, aka Place Charles de Gaule.

The Grand Place (big square) is a great place to meet friends or family before moving on to shopping, bars, cafes and restaurants in the area.

But if you really want to have some fun, be sure to visit Lille during the first weekend of September when the city square and the entire old town come to life thanks to the annual flea market: GRANDE BRADERIE DE LILLE.

Recent archeological findings now show that Beziers might be a few years older than Marseille.

The rue Saint Ferreol is the main shopping street in Marseille, located in the centre of the old city just a few minutes from the Old Port. This pedestrian-only street has a mix of small independent shops and a few high-end chains from Galleries Lafayettes & H&M to Pull&Bear & Yves Rocher.

When you’re done shopping, take a break and eat at one of the many restaurants along the side streets, which can be anything from traditional French bistros to the ever-popular Kabab shops.

Take some time to admire the charming old buildings and architecture before heading off to another interesting site.

Wrapping up

Remember, shopping streets are popular places, especially during peak tourist season when both locals and tourists converge, so make sure to get to the stores early if you want to avoid the crowds.

Also, pay attention to store hours. Many shops close from 5 pm to 6 pm, and most are closed on Sundays.

Saker ShopRite owner buys Manahawkin Commons in Stafford, including vacant Kmart

Two-minute read.

shopping tourist street

STAFFORD - The owner of ShopRite supermarkets throughout Monmouth and Ocean counties has purchased Manahawkin Commons on Route 72, a large shopping center near the Garden State Parkway that includes a long-vacant Kmart store.

Saker Properties of Manahawkin LLC purchased the 320,000-square-foot shopping center from Manahawkin 2015 LLC for $36.5 million, according to a deed dated Dec. 15, 2023.

MCB Real Estate LLC, a Baltimore-based privately held commercial real estate investment firm, which purchased the shopping center in 2015 after its former owner declared bankruptcy, said the deal was for the entire property.

"The center is in the midst of a redevelopment as it relates to the anchor space," said Ed Turkot, senior vice president at Holmdel-based Saker ShopRites, which owns 39 supermarkets in the state.

What's Going There? Salad House growing bigger with Manahawkin Plaza restaurant; more could be coming

Further details were not available. No plans for Manahawkin Commons have been filed yet with the township Planning Board, township Administrator Matthew von der Hayden told What's Going There.

In late 2021, Saker ShopRites purchased seven ShopRites stores in Ocean County, formerly owned by Perlmart Inc. , including the current ShopRite of Manahawkin supermarket located at Stafford Square Mall on Route 72. The other stores are in Toms River on Fischer Boulevard, Lacey, Berkeley, Manchester, Jackson and Waretown.

Kmart closed its store at Manahawkin Commons in 2017 . The 112,434-square-foot building, which sits at one end of the center, is now boarded up.

What's Going There? Years after Manahawkin housing plans flopped, whole new purpose found for this land

Other tenants include Regal Cinemas 10, TJ Maxx/Home Goods, Michael's, Famous Footwear, Staples, Eastern Dental, Verizon, McDonald's and TGI Fridays.

One plan for the shopping center proposed in 2020 but never implemented would have brought in Ross Dress for Less and Old Navy and moved TJ Maxx/Home Goods to the former Kmart. Burlington and Ulta Beauty were to fill other spaces at the center .

Besides the old Kmart, the shopping center does have some vacancies, including the former Five Below. Signs have gone up touting "Space Available For Lease" at those vacant stores.

Another Saker ShopRite planned: Manalapan Crossing developer: Let's dump restaurant, store plans for supermarket instead

Qantas is being forced to pay a £53m penalty along with £20m in compensation to passengers following a legal battle over tickets it sold for cancelled flights.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) sued Qantas last summer, alleging the airline had broken consumer law when it sold tickets for more than 8,000 flights without disclosing they had been cancelled.

One case saw the airline selling tickets for a Sydney to San Francisco flight some 40 days after it had been cancelled, the ACCC said.

More than 86,000 customers will share the compensation pot, and will be contacted over the next two months.

Gina Cass-Gottlieb, chair of the ACCC, said the airline's behaviour was "egregious and unacceptable".

"Many consumers will have made holiday, business and travel plans after booking on a phantom flight that had been cancelled," she said.

"We expect that this penalty, if accepted by the court, will send a strong deterrence message to other companies."

Qantas's chief executive Vanessa Hudsons said the agreement was a "step forward" to "restoring confidence" in the airline.

She said the administrative failings were caused by COVID, and that the airline was "sincerely sorry".

If you'll be affected by the M25 closure this weekend, it's worth noting that an alternative diversion route could slap you with an unexpected ULEZ charge.

The M25 will be closed in both directions between Junctions 9 and 10 in Surrey from 9pm on Friday until 6am on Monday.

Official diversion routes will take drivers on A roads crossing from Surrey into London's ULEZ area, but there will be no enforcement action for anyone taking the official route who does not meet the ULEZ requirements.

However, National Highways has warned anyone ignoring diversion signs in an attempt to find shorter alternative routes will be liable for the £12.50 daily ULEZ fee.

Of course, this does not apply to cars that meet the low emission standards.

The ULEZ was expanded to cover every borough of London last year.

The UK economy would be better off if there were fewer buy-to-let landlords, the country's biggest investment company has said.

Legal and General Investment Management (LGIM) told The Telegraph that "unscrupulous" landlords were "taking people's deposits and giving them a bad experience".

Bill Hughes, global head of real assets at L&G, said the rental sector needs an overhaul as too many buy-to-let landlords have been "suboptimal and substandard".

L&G has built a portfolio of 10,000 build-to-rent homes in the last eight years, and predicts traditional landlords will gradually be replaced by purpose-built rental properties managed by institutions.

Single-sex toilets will be legally required in all new restaurants, bars, offices and shopping centres, the government has announced.

It is set to change building regulations later this year to make it compulsory for premises to provide separate facilities for men and women.

The move follows an increase in the use of gender-neutral toilets.

The UK has installed a record number of public electric car chargers this year, figures show.

Nearly 6,000 new chargers were installed in the first three months of the year, according to Zapmap analysis of government data.

Some 1,500 of these were rapid chargers.

A common concern among those hesitant to switch to electric vehicles is range anxiety or the fear of not being able to find a charger.

Scroll through GoFundMe and it won't be long before you see them.

There's a widow left with her husband's financial struggles. Three young siblings trying to raise funds for their mum's send-off after her sudden death. A 25-year-old domestic violence victim whose family want to give her the send-off she deserves.

There are scores of pages like this as an apparently increasing number of Britons struggle with funeral costs.

These costs have risen 126% in the last two decades, according to a recent report from SunLife.

Where families would once have paid £1,835 for a basic funeral, they are now looking at costs of £4,141 on average.

"People can't afford to bury their dead," says Pastor Mick Fleming, who runs the charity Church On The Street.

He frequently spends his time helping families pay for funerals and providing his services as a minister for free, although he says there is simply too much demand for his small charity to help everyone.

Government or local authority grants are available to help families with funeral costs, but Pastor Mick says these can come too late as undertakers will often require a partial payment upfront.

There's an even darker side to this, too.

"What we're now seeing is people who are poor can't walk into the bank and get a bank loan - the economy's tough at the minute," Pastor Mick says.

"They can't get legitimate access to money so they can't borrow it and pay a decent standard rate back, so they have to go to loan sharks."

Many then find it impossible to pay the loan back and face threats from the criminals who lent them the money, says Pastor Mick.

He recalls: "There was a middle-aged lady, she had to borrow the money to bury her son.

"She couldn't pay the money back so then she started to get threatened and intimidated. People turning up at the house.

"It was pretty horrendous. She was getting suicidal. She was heartbroken already and she just couldn't get the money together."

The pastor says he was able to negotiate on her behalf - something he is now having to do as part of his charity work - but "you can't do that for everybody".

A funeral without a service

The number of funeral-related fundraisers increased by 22% on GoFundMe last year, figures shared with Sky News reveal.

Individual donations to these fundraisers increased by almost 400,000.

Many of these are trying to avoid their loved one being given a public health funeral, which is what happens if families are unwilling or unable to pay.

Local authorities are legally obliged to carry out funerals in this case, but they are given little guidance from the government on what this should entail - meaning each council will have its own policy on what is or isn't included.

In some cases, a service will not be offered and a person will be cremated or buried without the presence of family members.

Other times, the family may be allowed to attend but they might not be able to get involved in the service.

Generally, people will be cremated, unless they have asked not to be for religious or cultural reasons.

Those who are buried will often have a grave with no marker, or they may be placed in a communal grave.

"For someone that's lost a child or a husband or a wife or any loved one where you just haven't been able to provide closure, there's a sense of guilt that goes with it," Pastor Mick says.

As long as funeral costs remain eye-wateringly high, families across the country will be dealing with that guilt.

This week will see the Bank of England announce its latest interest rates decision - and experts believe borrowers will have to wait longer to see rates come down.

Policymakers appear set to hold out for stronger signs the cost-of-living crisis has abated, with economists widely expecting the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) to keep rates at the current level of 5.25%.

Rates have been held at this level since August last year.

At the last meeting in March, just one member of the MPC voted for rates to be cut by 0.25 percentage points, but the remaining eight members voted for no change.

Philip Shaw, chief economist at Investec, said: "This broad direction illustrates that collectively the committee is moving gradually towards a rate cut.

"It seems unlikely though to be ready to bite the bullet just yet and the Bank rate looks set to remain on hold at 5.25% for the sixth consecutive meeting."

Andrew Goodwin, chief UK economist for Oxford Economics, said data on services inflation and private sector regular pay growth has "likely extinguished any remaining hopes of a move in May".

As for whether rates could be cut in June or August, he said it is likely to be a "close call".

Economists at HSBC are also expecting the first rate cut to come in June.

Interest rates are used as a tool to help bring down UK inflation.

The brewing giant has announced it will invest £39m in revamping 600 of its pubs across the UK - a move that will create more than 1,000 new jobs.

The investment plan will also see pubs in its retail arm, Star Pubs & Bars, revitalised to appeal to those working from home.

Sixty-two pubs will be reopened this year and 94 sites are set for full refurbishments.

The remaining pubs will receive varying upgrades.

Heineken said it wanted to "broaden each pub's use and appeal" in response to an increase in people working from home, giving customers more reason to visit throughout the day.

The refurbished pubs will have dividing screens to create separate areas for different types of customers.

Lawson Mountstevens, chief executive at Star Pubs & Bars, said: "Fundamentally, the changes in people's working habits means that in a lot of these suburban locations, you've got more people who are around those areas a lot more.

"It's not rocket science. Those people are looking for pubs of a certain standard."

Aldi remained the cheapest supermarket last month, new analysis shows.

The retailer has won the crown of cheapest supermarket every month so far this year, according to research by Which?.

An average basket of 67 popular groceries cost £112.90 - more than £30 cheaper than the most expensive supermarket, Waitrose.

A basket of comparable items in Waitrose would cost £144.13 on average.

Here is the breakdown for each supermarket...

  • Aldi - £112.90
  • Lidl - £115.23
  • Asda - £126.98
  • Tesco - £128.17
  • Sainsbury's - £131.02
  • Morrisons - £134.87
  • Ocado - £136.86
  • Waitrose - £144.13.

Food price inflation has slowed to 4.5%, its lowest level since February 2022.

Despite being the most expensive, Waitrose and Ocado were the only grocers to win new shoppers in the first three months of the year, according to research by Kantar.

Every Monday we get an expert to answer your money problems or consumer disputes. Find out how to submit yours at the bottom of this post. Today's question is...

"My daughter recently bought a flat and has since learnt there is an extra £600 a year management fee that was not declared by the vendor during the sales process. We have been told that the vendor was heavily involved in negotiating the management contract. Can we complain?" J Mills

Serena Amani, managing director at Monarch Solicitors , has this advice...

The general principle when buying a property is "buyer beware", which means the onus is on the buyer to perform their due diligence before contracting to purchase.

The buyer's conveyancing solicitor interrogates the contractual documentation and raises relevant enquiries to ensure the full facts and obligations are available to the buyer to make an informed decision.

In this situation, it appears the seller has failed to disclose the management fee - we assume relating to the services provided to the estate.

We can't give specific advice as we don't have access to the contractual documentation. However, we would suggest:

  • To check if the obligation to pay a management fee is set out in the lease if it is a leasehold property, or the transfer deed if it is a freehold property. These documents should contain what services are provided and what the related charges are. The most common scenario is that of a leasehold flat. In this situation the services shall be set out under the service charges section. Generally, there is a provision that allows a management company to charge a management fee as a percentage of the overall service charge bill which is shared among all the leaseholders based on the size of their apartment.
  • If the obligation to pay the management fee is in the contract and your conveyancer failed to notify you of this obligation, there is a potential negligence claim against the conveyancer which can be pursued through their complaints process and escalated to the legal ombudsman.
  • In the rare instance that the management fee is not stipulated in the contract, then you may wish to contact the management company to obtain certified accounts for the services provided and ask them on what contractual basis they are charging a management fee. Management companies are obliged by statute to provide this information.
  • If there is no contractual basis or the fees are unreasonable then you may consider bringing a claim before the property tribunal. The tribunal has the power to make a ruling on the reasonability of the management fees. It should be noted that it can be a long and arduous process and legal fees are not always recoverable even if successful.
  • Where a seller has supplied misleading information about a property that materially influenced the decision to purchase the property, this could give rise to a claim for misrepresentation. Likewise, intentional concealment of this information during the sales process could constitute a breach of contract or misrepresentation.

For more specific advice, you may wish to contact a property lawyer experienced in the conveyancing process and service charge disputes.

Amsterdam is the most in-demand holiday destination for the UK, according to a study by Desert Safari Dubai Tours.

The company looked at Google search data over the past 12 months to find which holiday destinations were most popular in the UK, using terms such as "holidays to", "flights to" and "trips to".

Some 57,507 searches were carried out each month for trips to Amsterdam.

The second most in-demand was Dubai , with an average of 52,544 monthly searches.

Here is the rest of the list...

  • New York - 51,169
  • Paris - 43,326

Meanwhile, data from holiday booking site Expedia suggests Britons are chasing the sun over the summer.

Its trending destination data shows a 50% increase in searches for mainland Greece - while its islands of Santorini and Corfu remain popular.

Interest is also surging in Mediterranean gem Malta (up 25%), seen as a more affordable destination.

Searches are also up 50% for Albania , which has seen a surge in interest due to social media.

The short-haul hotspot of Tunis has seen searches rocket by 130%.
