Scarlet Lady

The first ship within the Virgin Voyages fleet, the adults-only Scarlet Lady welcomes more than 2,770 passengers and 1,160 crew members. Debuted in October 2021, the Scarlet Lady boasts a collection of unique amenities not often found on cruise ships, including a tattoo studio, a record shop and a blow-dry bar. And instead of a buffet or a dining hall, the Scarlet Lady offers a collection of more than 20 specialty restaurants, all covered by the cruise fare. Standouts include Extra Virgin, a traditional Italian restaurant serving handmade pasta, and Gunbae, a Korean barbecue eatery.

The Scarlet Lady also deviates from cruise industry tradition when it comes to onboard entertainment. Instead of Broadway classics, cruisers will be treated to six original shows, along with "micro plays" that are performed throughout the ship.

Cabin sizes range from 105 to 177 square feet for the Insider rooms to nearly 2,150 square feet for the RockStar Quarters suites. The latter are outfitted with marble bathrooms and serviced by RockStar Agents who are available to assist guests 24/7. The Scarlet Lady sails to destinations in the Caribbean, like the Bahamas , from Miami .

U.S. News Insider Tip:  Use the app to book dinner reservations as far out from your sailing as you can, or 45 days out for most sailors. If you wait until closer to time or until you're on board, you will likely find that the most popular restaurants and dining times are all booked up. –  Holly Johnson, Contributor

Seabourn Quest differs from the line's newer ships in terms of accommodations, as it offers some Ocean View Suites with porthole windows instead of verandas. However, all cabins still come equipped with amenities like flat-screen TVs, designer toiletries, personalized stationery, Egyptian cotton linens and in-suite bars stocked with your preferred refreshments.

Outside your suite, you can enjoy a range of pursuits, such as spa and salon treatments, free fitness classes, a nine-hole putting green and two swimming pools. Additionally, Seabourn Quest offers complimentary water sports equipment rentals at its Watersports Marina in select destinations.

Once you've worked up an appetite, sit for a meal at one of the ship's four restaurants, including the main dining room and The Grill, a steakhouse helmed by Michelin-starred chef Thomas Keller. The 6,826-passenger Allure of the Seas, unveiled in 2010, is among the largest cruise ships in the world. There are a whopping 2,054 crew members on board to cater to passengers' needs. 12 Themed Cruises You Should Have On Your Radar In 2024

T aking a cruise is an experience unlike anything else. Days at sea on a ship full of entertainment and relaxation make for a fantastic vacation. But what if you want even more from your cruise? A theme might be what's missing. In addition to all the usual cruise experiences, themed cruises allow fans of a particular artist, lifestyle, hobby (or even animal), to celebrate their passion on the high seas with activities, events, surprises, and sometimes special guests.

There are dozens of themed cruises on offer each year, usually hosted by major cruise lines like Norwegian , Carnival, and Royal Caribbean. But don't let their numbers fool you. According to  Business Insider , themed cruises are rapidly climbing in popularity, and some trips are selling out in record time. That means it's important to find your dream-themed cruise and reserve your tickets as early as possible.

Fortunately, even if they're sold out, most themed cruises will let you join a waiting list, so there's still hope! Here are 12 themed cruises that will set sail in 2024 and are well worth boarding, either now or the next time they hit the high seas.

The Emo's Not Dead Cruise

If you truly know it's not a phase, the Emo's Not Dead Cruise is perfect for you. Gather with fellow emo fans for four days (and nights) of concerts, activities, and even a private party at Great Stirrup Kay in the Bahamas. Over a dozen bands will perform, including Yellowcard, Senses Fail, and Armor for Sleep. Alongside themed activities like a masquerade ball, cruisegoers can also enjoy surprisingly cheerful activities like a bellyflop competition in the ship's pool.

The first Emo's Not Dead cruise was in 2022. Cruisegoer and emo fan TheReelChris shared highlights on  YouTube , calling it "EPIC." Fans in the comments section agree, with Schecterplayer92 adding, "This was one of the best experiences of my life." With a killer lineup and entertaining activities scheduled, it seems like Emo's Not Dead 2024 will also be a rad experience. The cruise will be hosted on the Norwegian Pearl, leaving from Miami on February 26 and returning on March 1, 2024. But what would an emo-related cruise be without a little sadness? Unfortunately, the cruise is already sold out. If you're interested, you can  sign up for the waiting list  and hope.

Meow Meow Cruise

Some of us know that no matter how great a vacation might be, cats would make it even better. Meow Meow Cruise has solved that problem. While guests unfortunately aren't allowed to bring their own furry friends aboard Virgin Voyages' Scarlet Lady, the four-day cruise will give them their feline fix in plenty of other ways.

Activities include cat-themed trivia and a scavenger hunt. But the best part may be communing with fellow cat people (many of whom stroll around the ship wearing cat ears). You'll also be able to mingle with real cats -- one of 2024's ports of call is Key West, where you'll find the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum and its community of about 60 friendly polydactyl kitties, many of them descended from one of the author's own pets.

It's hard to find reviews for Meow Meow Cruise, but the fact that this themed cruise has been going on annually since 2015 speaks for itself. The 2024 Meow Meow Cruise sets sail from Miami on February 21, with a return date of February 25. Tickets are still available, but to be sure you don't miss out, consider booking right now.

In My Cruise Era

Sure, cruises are great — and cruising is a multi-billion dollar industry — but is anything more popular than Taylor Swift? For those who can't imagine anyone saying "no" to that question, there's no better cruise than In My Cruise Era. While not officially affiliated with Taylor Swift, this themed cruise is a passionate fan homage. Swifties will be able to dress up in their favorite Taylor-inspired looks, exchange friendship bracelets, perform their idol's songs during karaoke sessions, and more. We're also guessing there will be of lots impromptu song breaks throughout the ship from Taylor's extensive catalog.

Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas will host this cruise, which sets sail from Miami on October 21, 2024 -- which, as People Magazine points out, is one day after the Eras Tour will be in the city. Fans lucky enough to attend the concert can continue their Taylor euphoria for four more days on the high seas. Since this is a new themed cruise, there aren't any reviews, but based on the positive fan vibes from Eras Tour concerts and movie viewings, among other events, we're guessing it's going to be a great time for Swifties. Swifties must agree, since the cruise is already sold out. Cancellations do happen, though, so hopeful fans can join the waiting list.  Contact the cruise's organizers to sign up.

Disney's Halloween On The High Seas

Go on just about any cruise-related blog or website and you'll see that Disney Cruise Line's Halloween-themed cruise, officially called Halloween on the High Seas, is a popular favorite. As you probably expect from Disney, this themed cruise is perfect for a family vacation , so it's not too scary. The cruise is hosted on multiple Disney Cruise Line ships, and each one is decorated with the care and attention to detail you'll find in most Disney-related enterprises. The Pumpkin Tree is the highlight of the decor, with pumpkins that eventually appear on its branches and transform into lit and unlit jack o'lanterns.

Halloween on the High Seas also features Halloween activities (including a trick-or-treating night) and exclusive Halloween-themed desserts. Disney cruises in general are known for their opportunities to meet the studio's beloved characters, and during the Halloween on the High Seas cruises, some of those characters are in costume. Notably, Disney Cruise Line's official site tells us, Minnie Mouse, Daisy Duck, and Clarabelle Cow will be dressed as the Sanderson Sisters -- who wouldn't want to see that?

This magical mixture of whimsy, fun, and exclusive opportunities is the perfect way to cast a spell on Disney fans of all ages. Luckily, Halloween on the High Seas is held during a number of different times in September and October, so you and your family should be able to find a place on board!

The Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise

Sure, Hallmark Channel Christmas movies might be a little on the cheesy side, but let's be honest: lots of us dream of being in one in real life. You can get a little of the real-life Hallmark movie experience by visiting some of the movies' filming locations , but now there's a way to have an even more immersive experience: The Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise.

Passengers will get to meet Hallmark Channel movie stars, attend panels and photo ops, and get to see a new Hallmark Christmas movie before its world premiere. Maybe best of all, passengers can take part in lots of Hallmark Christmas movie-inspired activities, including tree lighting and cookie decorating -- all while wearing their favorite ugly Christmas sweaters.

2024 is the first year of the Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise. It was originally intended to be just one cruise, but a second one was added after the first one sold out. As of now, two Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruises are scheduled for 2024. Both go from Miami to the Bahamas and back and last four days in November. ... And both are sold out. But Christmas is a time of miracles, so if a Hallmark Channel Christmas experience on the high seas sounds like your dream come true, sign up for the waiting list as soon as you can!

Hurtigruten Northern Lights Cruises

Themed cruises are often about fandoms and hobbies. But Norway-based cruise line Hurtigruten offers a themed cruise that's about something even bigger: the Northern Lights . There are several Northern Lights-themed cruises out there, including some luxurious options by Cunard. Unfortunately, the Northern Lights aren't always visible, but Hurtigruten stands out by offering a Northern Lights Promise for cruises scheduled between September 26 and March 31 and lasting longer than 11 days. If the Northern Lights aren't visible during your cruise, they'll give you another one. So if you're serious about seeing the Aurora Borealis, this is the company to choose.

The Northern Lights are the focus of Hurtigruten's eponymous cruises, but there are also other things to do on board, including scientific lectures and photography lessons. There are excursions, too -- notably a dog sledding option. Passengers who've taken one of Hurtigruten's cruises unanimously praise the stunning fjords and landscapes you can admire from the ship and during excursions, not to mention their experiences of seeing the Northern Lights. Some warn that the ships aren't as luxurious or modern as many other cruise ships, primarily because Hurtigruten's ships are also functional vessels intended to transport and deliver mail to various points on the Norwegian coast. Still,  Cruise Critic reviewers like cmolaison praise the friendly crew, the surprising level of comfort, and the "stunning vistas" you'll see, saying he and his family "highly recommend" taking a Hurtigruten cruise.

Cruise & Crop Crafting Cruises

If the perfect vacation for you is a combination of R&R and crafting, you're in luck! There are several crafting-themed cruises. One of the most popular is organized by Cruise & Crop, with ships around the world hosting different crafting- and arts-themed trips. This makes them the most accessible themed cruises on our list, with different price ranges, departure points, itineraries, and ports of call. One thing all crafting cruises have in common, though, is groups of like-minded people exploring their creativity amid the other joys of cruising.

For instance, one of Crop & Cruise's 2024 offerings is a Mexican Riviera cruise aboard Royal Caribbean's Navigator of the Seas, featuring scrapbooking and other papercraft classes taught by artist Barb Warne. The ship departs from Los Angeles on April 19, returning April 26. Many Cruise & Crop cruises sell out quickly, so if this idea has sparked both your wanderlust and your creativity, be sure to check their list of 2024 cruises and reserve as soon as you can.

Star Trek: The Cruise

For seven days and nights every year, thousands of Star Trek fans gather to be a part of a fandom extravaganza at sea. Star Trek: The Cruise is an experience that features celebrities aboard (2024's guests include LeVar Burton and Wil Wheaton, among many others), costume and cosplay events, and lots of fun activities.

But what makes Star Trek: The Cruise truly unique is that audience participation is very much encouraged. Passengers and celebrity guests are all considered the crew of one great, big, intergalactic vessel. Passengers get to interact with the guest stars in events like karaoke battles, and stars share parts of their earthly lives with Q&A sessions and even glimpses at other projects they may be involved in.

The first Star Trek: The Cruise was held in 2017 and since then it's been a fan favorite. Star Wars and cruising aficionado Aaron Bossig writes on  Trek Movie.com that many fans go on the cruise every year, and proudly wear t-shirts from the previous ones. He calls Star Trek: The Cruise "an extra special convention experience." 2024's edition will be held on the Mariner of the Seas, departing from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on February 22 and returning on February 29.

Literature Festival At Sea

Once a year, aboard the legendary Queen Mary 2, passengers can mingle with writers, poets, journalists, and critics in a full-blown literary festival in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Literature Festival at Sea invites writers in all genres to host round table discussions, participate in Q&As revolving around their work and areas of expertise, host workshops, and converse with passengers.

Whether passengers want to participate as much as possible or just attend a few events, the Festival seems to be an excellent addition to a typical Queen Mary 2 voyage. On TripAdvisor , passenger Artemis C writes of her experience at a previous Literature Festival at Sea that "the whole week was a joy".

2024's lineup features crime novelists, journalists, historians, and more, for what's sure to be a fascinating week of discussion and discovery. If you'd like to combine an elegant transatlantic cruise and a literary experience, 2024's Literature Festival at Sea will take place from November 13-20, departing from Southampton, U.K., and arriving in New York. Cunard has also launched an Australian Literature Festival at Sea, scheduled from December 11-16, 2024, on the Queen Elizabeth, which departs from and returns to Sydney.

Many cruise lines are proud of their food offerings. Some cruises feature dishes created by world-famous chefs, and others even host food and wine festivals. But no culinary cruise event seems quite as, well, fun, as Chefs Making Waves. This culinary-themed cruise will set sail for the first time in 2024. Onboard will be a number of beloved celebrity chefs, including Anne Burrell and the Cake Boss himself, Buddy Valastro. Cooking demos and, of course, food tastings of all kinds (including sit-down meals, desserts, and street food) are on the menu. Best of all, Chefs Making Waves is an all-inclusive cruise, so everyone can eat and drink without having to pay extra!

There will be all of the usual cruise-related fun, from swimming to excursions, to help you work up an appetite. There will also be unique games, with some of the chefs participating in events like bingo and a celebrity chef sing-off. If this sounds like an awesome cruise, you're not the only one who feels that way. Chefs Making Waves will take place from March 25-29, departing from Miami with excursions in Great Stirrup Cay and Nassau, Bahamas ... and it's already sold out. But you can still  sign up for the waiting list . With a little luck, you'll be able to enjoy this delicious, themed cruise experience.

Soul Train Cruise

Imagine a festival with a lineup featuring some of the best soul and R&B acts of all time. Now imagine it's on a relaxing cruise ship. This dream is actually reality -- it's called the Soul Train Cruise. The popular themed cruise will be celebrating its 11th year in 2024 and the lineup is on fire. Dozens of groups and artists will perform, including The Temptations, Boyz II Men, and En Vogue. Passengers can also learn how to dance like people did back in the old school days of Soul Train's TV show, with lessons from some of the show's actual dancers. There will also be wine tastings, Q&A's, comedy shows, and a lot more.

With all of this on offer, it's no surprise that the Soul Train Cruise is sold out. But sign up on the waiting list and keep your calendar free from January 27-February 3, and you may get lucky. If you do, the cruise leaves from Fort Lauderdale, with ports of call in Tortola (British Virgin Islands) and St. Maarten.

The Gothic Cruise

The Gothic Cruise is an annual event held on an ordinary cruise ship. Goths mingle with "norms" but have their own private events on board, mostly DJ sets and concerts. There's also a masquerade ball, with Goths decked out in their finest Victorian-style garb ... as long as it meets ship safety requirements, that is. The cruise's website specifies that simulated weapons aren't allowed and notes that hoop skirts are fine for the ball but not in the ship's dining areas, "due to the close proximity of the tables". And yet, the Goth community thrives on these cruises -- and even gains norm fans along the way.

In a Porthole Magazine article about the Gothic Cruise, longtime attendee Spike Pittman says that many mainstream passengers are wary of the Goths at first, "But by the end they're begging to get into our private events." Some even book their future cruises to coincide with the Gothic Cruise, even if they don't plan on attending every event.

The Gothic Cruise has been held since 1989. Cruising doesn't seem very Goth, but in the end, the article points out, it comes down to what all themed cruises offer: a sense of community (in this case, one that often stays up all night and sleeps during the day). If this moves your little black heart, the 2024 Gothic Cruise will be held on the Norwegian Escape (but book through the Gothic Cruise's website for private event access), departing from Orlando on March 2, and returning March 9.

Award-Winning Cruises To & From California

Sail off to stunning destinations along the Pacific Coast on one of our breathtaking California cruises. Departing from the glamorous port of Los Angeles, these itineraries range from six- or seven-night journeys north to Oregon and Vancouver to unforgettable sailings of 14 nights or more that venture through the dramatic Panama Canal.

Embark on a Pacific Coastal cruise that visits scenic ports in California including cosmopolitan San Francisco and sleepy Catalina Island. Or embark on a once-in-a-lifetime journey through the Panama Canal, stopping in beautiful destinations in Mexico, Costa Rica, and Guatemala along the way.

California Cruise Highlights

California is famed for its fine wines, particularly those grown in the Napa and Sonoma Valleys. Head out of San Francisco over the Golden Gate Bridge to the rolling wine country of Sonoma Valley, dotted with sleepy country towns and wineries. Here, you’ll visit a local grower, enjoy a tour of the winery, and have time for a tasting. Further north, in Oregon, taste some of the world’s finest pinots in the scenic Willamette Valley, where there are no less than 700 wineries.

Cosmopolitan San Francisco

Few cities are packed with as many iconic sights as San Francisco, from the graceful vermillion span of the Golden Gate Bridge to the vintage cable cars, the zig-zag of Lombard Street, the Victorian “Painted Ladies” of Haight Street, and the colors, aromas, and bustle of Chinatown. Head to North Beach for the best Italian coffee, shop for souvenirs at Pier 39, and take a tour of seemingly impenetrable Alcatraz to learn about the legendary criminals who were incarcerated here.

Scenic Hikes

Join a guided hike over the scenic East End Trail on rugged Catalina Island, climbing to 1,684 feet, with sweeping views of the eastern shoreline. Commune with nature in this pristine environment, where you could spot bald eagles, Catalina gray fox, deer, and bison. From San Francisco, one of the most beautiful hikes is the six miles of trails snaking through Muir Woods, a primeval landscape of ferns and rushing streams shaded by magnificent redwoods.

California Cruise Destinations

Experience the thrill of sailing through the Panama Canal, a wonder of engineering that connects the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Get close to the locks and learn about the canal’s history on a trip from Colon, or paddle a kayak on Panama’s island-specked Gatun Lake. Panama Canal itineraries also visit buzzing Puerto Vallarta and Huatulco in Mexico, and the cloud forests of Costa Rica, rich in wildlife. Historic Cartagena, all cobbled streets and vibrant color, is another highlight.

Make your way along the rugged Pacific Coast visiting unforgettable destinations in California, Oregon, and British Columbia. Explore rugged Catalina Island on two wheels, or on a guided hike. Take advantage of an overnight stay in San Francisco to explore the museums, taste dim sum in Chinatown, and visit the rolling vineyards of Sonoma or Napa Valley. Embrace the seaside charm of historic Astoria and stroll through the pristine Butchart Gardens in quaint Victoria on Vancouver Island.

By land and by sea: the best way to road trip to Miami for a cruise vacation.

There’s no better way to get excited for your cruise vacation than by taking an epic road trip to the port..

The best part about cruising is that the vacation doesn’t start or end on the ship. Sure, you’ve got enough onboard luxury amenities to keep you entertained for months, and the ship brings you to some of the most beautiful destinations around the world, but what about having a memorable experience before you even board? While most people might fly to their cruise port and immediately board the ship, why not extend the vacation and take a little road trip? Whether you have a fear of flying (aviophobia), want a unique and creative couples getaway , or you’re just in the mood for a road trip, driving to the Miami cruise port and spending some time exploring Miami is the perfect way to start your epic vacation . These are some of our top road trip tips for your next cruise from Miami.

Taking a road trip to Miami

You’re probably looking forward to all the tropical ports you’ll be visiting on your cruise, but add one more destination to that list of places to get excited about: Miami. That’s right. Miami is so much more than just a port of departure . It’s one of the top destinations to visit in the US, with Miami Beach alone attracting over 10 million people each year . The city is known for its year-round warm weather, reputation for diversity and inclusion (its LGBTQ scene is famous), colorful art district, and of course, its legendary beaches.

Miami is also the cruise capital of the US, with Miami Cruise Port serving as the embarkation point for dozens of cruises each day. There’s a reason people travel from all over the country – often bypassing cruise ports closer to home – to sail from Miami. It’s perfectly located for sailing on a host of Caribbean voyages, and even for crossing the Atlantic on a transcontinental itinerary, if you’re up for the adventure . But while many do fly, consider a road trip there before your next cruise from Miami, to really take advantage of all the surrounding region has to offer.

Top 5 places people drive from to cruise from Miami

Driving to Miami isn’t just a commute – it’s a perfect way to see some of the most beautiful regions of the country, all en route to an epic cruise experience. If you’re excited about the prospect of a cruise, chances are you’d enjoy the freedom and adventure of a road trip, too. You’ll give yourself the opportunity to meet new people, create memories, and see some pretty cool scenery along the way.

But where do you start? Well, that’s the beauty of it. You can really start from anywhere. Luckily, there are plenty of cities within easy driving distance of Miami, with routes filled with fun attractions and scenic views. You can take a fairly local road trip from Orlando, or a truly epic adventure all the way from New York. These are the top cities to embark on your Miami road trip.

1. Orlando, Florida to Miami, Florida

Orlando, the home of Disney World and Universal Studios, is the ideal place to start a Miami road trip if you’re not in the mood for a super long drive. It’s just a four-hour drive, and approximately 50 million people make the trip from Orlando to Miami every year . You can turn that four-hour drive into a multi-day trip, though, if you really want to, between stops in Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, the Everglades, and a detour to see the stunning lighthouses along the coast.

  • Distance from Orlando, Florida to Miami: 235 Miles
  • Road Trip Driving Time: approximately 4 hours
  • Directions from Orlando to Miami:  Florida Turnpike (Tolls)

2. Atlanta, Georgia to Miami, Florida

For a slightly longer, multi-state road trip, start in Atlanta. You might be wondering why a road trip to Miami from Atlanta makes sense, since cruise ports like Fort Lauderdale and Port Canaveral are much closer. Well, those ports don’t have any adult only cruises right now, and getting to Miami isn’t that much further. On this 10-12 hour journey, you can stop in the historic city of Savannah, as well as Jacksonville, and St. Augustine. You could even take a more circuitous route and make a stop in Charleston, which would be well worth the detour.

Things to Know on a road trip from Atlanta

  • Distance from Atlanta, Georgia to Miami: 663 Miles
  • Road Trip Driving Time: approximately 10-12 hours
  • Directions from Atlanta to Miami:  I-75 South, I-85 South, Florida Turnpike (Tolls)

3. Dallas, Texas to Miami, Florida

Dallas to Miami might be the perfect all-American road trip, cutting right through the South on this 20+ hour adventure. Traveling along the scenic Gulf of Mexico route, you’ll skirt the coast and have the opportunity to stop at beautiful coastal destinations like Pensacola, Mobile, Tampa, and Fort Myers. You can even take a detour in New Orleans. The Atlanta route is an alternate path to Miami, and like it sounds, it brings you through the vibrant cities of Atlanta and Birmingham. Enjoy their historic landmarks, nightlife, and diverse cuisine before making your way down to Miami.

Things to Know on a road trip from Dallas

  • Distance from Dallas, Texas to Miami: 1,309 Miles
  • Road Trip Driving Time: approximately 20 hours
  • Directions from Dallas to Miami:  I-20 East, I-10 East (Tolls)

4. New York City, New York to Miami, Florida

Another coastal road trip to Miami, this one extends down the eastern seaboard, bringing you through some of the country’s most important historic sites as well as scenic stops. From New York City, head south to Washington DC, where you can take advantage of all the free museums and really immerse yourself in US history. For real history buffs, make sure to stop at Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia, a colonial reenactment village where you’ll truly feel like you’ve stepped back in time (you can even churn some butter). Continuing down the coast, spend some time in Savannah, or take a detour to Georgia’s relaxing Jekyll Island, before finishing your journey in Miami.

Things to Know on a road trip from New York City

  • Distance from New York, to Miami: 1,287 Miles
  • Directions from New York City to Miami:  I-95 South (Tolls)

5. Virginia Beach, Virginia to Miami, Florida

The 15-hour trip from Virginia Beach to Miami also brings you along the eastern seaboard, and really spotlights some of the east coast’s best beach destinations. Without needing to take any inconvenient detours, you can visit Myrtle Beach, Charleston, Savannah, Daytona Beach, and Fort Lauderdale, all en route to starting your epic cruise vacation.

Things to Know on a road trip from Virginia Beach

  • Distance from Virginia Beach, Virginia to Miami: 982 Miles
  • Road Trip Driving Time: approximately 15 hours
  • Directions from Virginia Beach to Miami:  I-85 South, I-95 South and Florida Turnpike (Tolls)

Travel | bay area consumer prices hop higher as pace of inflation worsens, subscriber only, travel | cruise passenger goes missing as ship approaches miami, second case in a week of a disappearance from a cruise out of florida.

Author

Kevin McGrath, 26, had been aboard the Carnival Conquest for a three-night cruise last weekend to the Bahamas. He was with family members celebrating his father’s 60th birthday, a relative told CNN .

McGrath was reportedly last seen by his brother in his cabin around 2 a.m. Monday.  He failed to join his family for breakfast before the ship’s return to the Miami port, at 8 that morning, and they notified the crew after searching for him.

Miami-Dade police told the Miami Herald that the cruise line says there’s no video or other evidence indicating he went overboard, but the Coast Guard nevertheless searched nearby waters for more than three days.

A week earlier, a 19-year-old Texas man went missing from Wonder of the Seas on a weeklong cruise from Port Canaveral, Fla., to Mexico. Sigmund Ropich is thought to have gone overboard on Aug. 29 near Cuba; he has not been found.

Other recent incidents in which U.S. cruise passengers went missing and are thought to have gone overboard:

• Aug. 11, Hilo, Hawaii. Kenneth Schwalbe, 59, of Costa Mesa, Calif., was reportedly seen on video falling from the Emerald Princess as it neared Hawaii on a cruise out of Los Angeles.

• July 23, Jacksonville, Fla. Jaylen Hill, 30, is said by cruise line officials to have jumped from the Carnival Elation as it returned from a four-day trip to the Bahamas.

• May 29, Norfolk, Va. Ronnie Peale Jr., 35, disappeared from the Carnival Magic as it returned from a five-day trip to the Bahamas. Cruise officials said he fell from a balcony.

In addition, a Louisiana teenager on a graduation trip to the Bahamas went missing May 24 after jumping or falling from a sunset excursion boat.

Kayak Just Named This 'Surprising' U.S. City the Most Popular Destination for Summer Travel

No. 1 on the list might surprise you.

Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. She now splits her time between Colorado and Paris, ensuring she doesn't have to live without skiing or L'As du Fallafel.

If you’re not already dreaming up your summer vacation plans , you should be, with Kayak reporting that flight prices are down this summer. Domestic fares within the U.S. have decreased 13 percent , giving travelers some much-needed relief from the sky-high prices of last summer .

But where is everyone headed? Kayak has been evaluating what destinations have had the highest search volume for travel between May 24 and Sept. 3. The results provide a little insight into where people are traveling domestically this summer, with 10 major U.S. cities making the list.

“These are our most-searched-for destinations. So out of billions of annual searches, travelers are turning to these places over and over again,” the Kayak report notes.

At the top of the popular domestic destination list is Seattle, which Kayak says is “surprising” based on past results. That said, those in the know , are well aware that the cool, notoriously rainy city shines in the summer. Between May and September, the number of rainy days drops significantly, and the temperature hovers around 70 degrees — arguably the ideal summer temperature. The average cost for summer tickets to Seattle is $455, making it the second most expensive destination on the list.

Following Seattle on the list is Las Vegas — a mainstay in the popular destination arena — with an average flight cost of $396. Orlando came in at No. 3 with an average summer flight price of  $328. The most expensive summer destination, Honolulu , came in at No. 4 with an average summer flight price of $780.

Most of the other major U.S. cities were represented, including New York City, Miami, Chicago, and Los Angeles. But what surprised Kayak’s data team was the presence of historically less popular “wild card cities” on the list, specifically Denver (No. 6) and Boston (No. 8). Summer flights to Denver average $346, while flights to Boston average $391 this summer.

Below is a full rundown of the most popular summer destinations in the U.S., according to summer flight searches on Kayak: 1. Seattle Average summer flight price: $455

2. Las Vegas Average summer flight price: $396

3. Orlando  Average summer flight price: $328

4. Honolulu Average summer flight price: $780

5. New York City Average summer flight price: $378 6. Denver Average summer flight price: $346  7. Los Angeles Average summer flight price: $396

8. Boston Average summer flight price: $391

9. Miami Average summer flight price: $375  10. Chicago Average summer flight price: $361

Miami dolphins | dolphins’ 2024 schedule leaks: miami hosts buffalo for early-season prime-time showdown.

Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill (ankle) is among the numerous Miami players battling through an injury. (Joe Cavaretta/South Florida Sun Sentinel)

A Week 2 pairing between the Dolphins and Bills on Sept. 12 was announced by the NFL Tuesday morning ahead of Wednesday night’s full schedule release.

Coming on the second week of the regular season, the divisional clash will be the first “Thursday Night Football” game of the season, airing exclusively on Amazon Prime Video for viewers outside of the South Florida and Buffalo markets. In the opening week, the Baltimore Ravens face the Kansas City Chiefs on the season’s first Thursday night in a rematch of last year’s AFC Championship Game that airs on NBC.

With Miami-Buffalo being a night game, the Bills will dodge the September sun beaming on their sideline for their 2024 trip to Hard Rock Stadium, although it will still be a hot and humid environment for the team from western New York.

An early meeting in Miami Gardens likely means the Dolphins will visit Buffalo in the late-season cold next season.

It’s the first known game on the schedule for Miami before Wednesday night’s full release. The Dolphins ’ opponents for their 2024 schedule, along with whether they will be home or away, are already known.

Getting their first one revealed Tuesday, the Dolphins, with a high-profile roster and ample intriguing storylines in 2024 , are once again expected to get several national standalone games.

Miami’s 17-game schedule is comprised of home and away games against its three divisional foes in the AFC East , games against the entire AFC South and NFC West, plus opponents that finished in the same position in the AFC North and West and NFC North.

Here’s a breakdown of the remaining matchups:

at Buffalo Bills

Quarterback Josh Allen has been a thorn in Miami’s side in recent history. After getting swept by the four-time defending AFC East champs in 2023, the Dolphins have now lost 11 of their past 12 against Buffalo, including last season’s regular-season finale, costing Miami the division title and a home playoff game in the first round.

Vs./at New York Jets

The extreme intrigue that was expected from this rivalry in 2023 was put on hold for a year after quarterback Aaron Rodgers tore his Achilles four plays into his initial campaign with the Jets. Miami swept a weakened New York team last season by a combined 51 points.

Vs./at New England Patriots

A rebuild continues in New England, and now with new coach Jerod Mayo replacing Bill Belichick and possibly a first look at Drake Maye in this rivalry. With little expectations for the Patriots, Dolphins need two wins out of this matchup.

Vs. Tennessee Titans

Miami will surely like to avenge last year’s Monday night debacle, blowing a two-touchdown lead with three minutes remaining, right back at Hard Rock Stadium. Mike Vrabel is no longer on the Tennessee sideline, though, as the Titans hired Brian Callahan and gave quarterback Will Levis wide receivers Calvin Ridley and Tyler Boyd, plus Tony Pollard in the backfield to replace Derrick Henry.

Vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

Tua Tagovailoa against Trevor Lawrence for the second time as professionals. The 2021 meeting was in London. It’s also a rematch of the 2018 college football title game. The Jaguars have a 6-5 edge in the series between in-state AFC foes.

At Houston Texans

These two teams met for joint practices and a preseason game last year. The Texans have since made a surprising run to win the AFC South last season, win a playoff game and then bolster the roster in free agency around budding quarterback C.J. Stroud. Does Stefon Diggs have as much success with Houston against Miami as he did the past four years with Buffalo?

At Indianapolis Colts

The old AFC East rivals meet again for the first time in three years and first time in Indianapolis since 2019. The Dolphins get a regular-season meeting against the team that was on the wrong end of their last playoff win way back in 2000. Miami will work on changing that factoid come January.

Vs. Las Vegas Raiders

One benefit of missing out on the AFC East title: The Dolphins host the AFC West’s second-place Raiders instead of the defending Super Bowl-champion Chiefs. Defensive tackle Christian Wilkins, after fleeing to Vegas in free agency, makes his return to Hard Rock Stadium on the visitors’ sideline.

At Cleveland Browns

Also because Miami didn’t win the division over Buffalo, the Dolphins visit the Browns instead of a third consecutive year with a road game in Baltimore. Tagovailoa goes up against the quarterback former coach Brian Flores wanted over him, Deshaun Watson, in the team’s first trip to Cleveland in five years.

Vs. San Francisco 49ers

Fire up all the storylines between coaches Mike McDaniel and Kyle Shanahan , who have been on the same coaching staffs for 14 NFL seasons for five different organizations, including Shanahan’s first five as head coach with the 49ers. Shanahan got the better of McDaniel two years ago when they met in Santa Clara. These franchises, in what’s also a rematch of the Dolphins’ last Super Bowl appearance following the 1984 season, meet in Miami Gardens for the first time since 2016.

Vs. Arizona Cardinals

One of Tagovailoa’s first great performances came against Kyler Murray in Arizona in the middle of his rookie season in 2020. The two meet again for the first time since. Miami is 10-3 all-time against the Cardinals.

At Los Angeles Rams

It’s the third consecutive season the Dolphins visit SoFi Stadium, the last two to play at the Chargers. The Dolphins have won five in a row against the Rams, the last loss coming in St. Louis in 2001, and are 12-2 overall against the franchise. Tagovailoa’s first start and win came at home versus the Rams in 2020.

At Seattle Seahawks

The longest travel in the NFL goes against the Dolphins in 2024. If Miami gets the Seahawks and Rams games on consecutive weekends, as it usually requests in cases involving two games on the Pacific coast, it may spend the week in between practicing out west. With Seattle previously in the AFC, this opponent holds the distinction of being the Dolphins’ second-to-last victim in a playoff win, coming after the 1999 season to close out the old Kingdome.

At Green Bay Packers

This is the “17th game,” if you will, of the schedule — not in that it would be played Week 18 (that’s a divisional game), but that it’s the extra matchup from the NFL’s previous 16-game format. The Dolphins and Packers both finished second in their divisions last season, and that creates the first meeting of these 2020 draft quarterbacks, Tagovailoa and Jordan Love. Miami lost at home on Christmas Day to Green Bay last time the teams faced off, and visit Lambeau Field for the first time since 2018.

‘As Seen on TV’ millionaire set to drop $100 million on one of Miami’s priciest properties

A view of La Gorce Island, Allison Island, and Miami Beach.

Ajit “AJ” Khubani made a fortune selling contraptions such as the PedEgg, for removing callouses from feet, and the Horsepower, for getting rid of grime, through “As Seen on TV” ads.

Now, the infomercial king is about to plow that money into one of the largest real estate purchases ever made in the Miami area.

Khubani agreed to pay $100 million for three parcels of a waterfront compound on an island in Miami Beach, said people with knowledge of the matter, asking not to be identified because the information is confidential. A second buyer would purchase the remaining fourth parcel for $22 million.

All told, the nearly 3-acre (1.2 hectares), La Gorce Island estate would go for about $122 million, making it the most-expensive home ever sold in the Miami area.

The previous record was the mansion Ken Griffin purchased in 2022 for $107 million, which so far has been the only purchase in the Miami area that has topped $100 million.

Khubani didn’t respond to calls and messages seeking comment.

The La Gorce property was initially put up for sale for $170 million in 2022, according to a listing. It belonged to Dr. M. Lee Pearce, a physician and health-care investor who died in 2017. Proceeds from the sale are slated to go to his charitable foundation.

The estate is made up of four parcels: The three Khubani is buying, which include two houses and a private park, and a fourth with a bigger home that will go to a different buyer. All together, it adds up to 12 bedrooms and four marinas.

Final terms of the purchase, at 18 La Gorce Circle, still hinge on securing local authorizations to split the estate.

Khubani was born in New Jersey to a family of Indian immigrants. He and his brothers operate several companies, like BulbHead and Ideavillage, that sell products under the “As Seen on TV” banner.

The family has made money on South Florida real estate recently, with one of the brothers, Anand, selling a vacant oceanfront lot in Palm Beach for $85 million last month, records show. He had bought the property for $12.7 million in 2005. The transaction was reported by the Real Deal .

Sales of luxury South Florida homes have been fueled by ultra-rich buyers like Jeff Bezos and Griffin. Developers have started marketing penthouses in new high-end towers for over a $100 million , banking on the continued inflow of deep-pocketed buyers lured by warmer weather and lower taxes.

Jill Eber, Jill Hertzberg and Danny Hertzberg of Coldwell Banker Realty represented the seller on the La Gorce deal. Brett Harris, with Douglas Elliman, and Bespoke Real Estate were on the buyer’s side.
