Tokyo (Yokohama), Japan

An hour from the port city of Yokohama is the booming city of Tokyo. A visit to vibrant Tokyo reveals a mix of traditional and modern attractions: See the Imperial Palace, participate in a tea ceremony or shop in the legendary Ginza district. Tours also take passengers to the Meiji Shrine and the Senso-ji Temple. Many visitors opt to join an excursion to Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park for a boat trip on the lake, a cable car ride to Mount Komagatake and an unforgettable view of Mount Fuji.

Princess Shuttle from the Terminal in Yokohama

Cool Cruiser

For those who have sailed into Yokohama - Does Princess have a shuttle that runs from the Daikoku Pier Cruise Terminal across the bridge to where a train to Tokyo can be boarded?

Daikoku Pier is actually a Cargo Pier that is rarely used by cruise ships - unless the regular Cruise Ship piers are already assigned to others.

Princess may have a shuttle bus. But if they do not, there is a regular bus that caries local workers to the Pier - and back to Yokohama.

From the Princess website:

Pier Address - Diamond Princess Daikoku Pier Cruise Terminal 13 Daikoku-futo, Tsurumi Ward, Yokohama

I read that the Diamond is too tall to sail under the bridge which is necessary to access any of the other piers hence the docking at the Daikoku Pier.

I'm not terribly confident that Princess is going to provide a shuttle so I'm happy to hear that there is a regular bus that will be available to us. Thanks @BruceMuzz !!

We have been in Yokohama many times on the Diamond Princess and we always berthed at the Osanbashi Cruise Terminal.  Last time was October, 2017.  From the Cruise Log excerpt of 26 October, 2017:

"We then passed under the Yokohama Bridge before making our approach to the berth and docking at 6:00am".  And on 17 October, 2017:  "Diamond Princess spent the day lying quietly alongside at Osanbashi Cruise Terminal."

I would suggest you inquire from Princess why they are not using the cruise ship terminal in Yokohama.

And unless the ships are too tall that cannot pass under the bridge and dock at Osanbashi. In recent years, the megaships of Royal Caribbean, Costa and MSC all have to dock at the cargo pier Daikoku. It is now more and more common for the cruise ships to use this pier.

Diamond Princess is a special case. In the past (2019 and before) she was always able to moor at Osanbashi because she could just fit under the bridge.

Starting from 2020, Princess decides to change the embarkation pier to Daikoku for all future voyages of Diamond Princess. I heard that it is because she becomes slightly taller after adding some structures in the most recent refurbishment, so she cannot pass under the bridge anymore.

Nevertheless, Diamond Princess had only moored at Daikoku for twice in January/February 2020. After that there was the pandemic and Diamond Princess has suspended service until now.

It is unclear that if Diamond Princess will keep docking at Daikoku in 2023, or change back to Osanbashi.

In 2020 Princess (or the port authority?) had arranged shuttle bus between Daikoku pier and Motomachi-Chūkagai (Chinatown) Train Station. This was mentioned in the pre-cruise information below in the last few pages, written in Japanese only.

thank you for this information. I am beginning the long process of planning for an upcoming trip with my family. we prefer to travel independently so location and access to public transportation are important. I did not realize the two ports and i have planning based on the   Osanbashi Cruise Terminal. i will now look at this more carefully.  I have seen video where the diamond princess passes under the bridge ( this must be old )  I appreciate the knowledge , insight and information to help me plan.

Here is a screenshot from the Japan TV news when Diamond Princess was seriously affected at the beginning of the pandemic in early 2020.

That ill-fated cruise departed from Daikoku, and also returned to Daikoku with many sick passengers. Those were the only two times that she moored at this pier.

Extremely useful information. Thank you for taking the time to share all of this with us.  Clearly what you are posting is the most current information.

We are hoping that the shuttle you mention will take us from the ship to the Motomachi-Chūkagai station. From there, Shinjuku is easy. 😃

Thanks for posting that map.  I learned a few things from it:

1.  Daikoku Pier is on an island.  Thus, the cruise line certainly should provide transportation to Yokohama City.

2.  If you zoom out you can see the location of three Costco stores.  Hadn't known there were so many in Japan.

3.  Haneda Airport is much closer to Yokohama than I had thought.

thank you for the link as well. it was very helpful.  I think it is a crack up that you noticed the Costco. Am I the only one or were you curious  about what the inside of that Costco might look like. I might be very intrigued to see a Japanese Costco.

I suspect that it will be very similar to U.S. Costco's with the exception of the food court and some Japan only merchandise.  There is one in Taipei near my brother in law's house that we often shop.  We are doing a B2B repositioning on the Westerdam back to Seattle, so if we decide to buy something big there it should be no problem getting it home as we live near Seattle.

Yokohama Port (area:KANTO/KANAGAWA)

Port information.

princess cruise yokohama port address

The Yokohama Port has served as a gateway to the greater Tokyo area and has welcomed countless cruise ships since its opening in 1859 as Japan's first modern international trading port. Lying as many as 11 nautical miles closer to the Pacific than the Tokyo Port, it allows cruise ships to save on pilot charges and fuel, and passengers can spend a greater amount of time for sightseeing. As the port is conveniently set in the heart of Yokohama, shopping and tourist destinations are a walk away. Since the Yokohama Port is situated at the center of Tokyo Bay, public transportations offer easy access to Tokyo and farther on to Mt. Fuji and Kamakura, which are ideal day trip destinations. The state-of-the-art international passenger terminal was reopened in 2002 can accommodate four 30,000-ton-class or two 70,000-ton-class cruise ships at once.

Diamond Princess returns to Yokohama, three years after mass COVID outbreak

The Diamond Princess arrives at the Port of Yokohama on Friday. | KYODO

The Diamond Princess cruise liner returned to Yokohama on Friday for the first time since a mass COVID-19 outbreak three years ago led Japan to quarantine those onboard and suspend the arrival of foreign cruise ships until this month.

The outbreak of infections on the Diamond Princess in February 2020 led to thousands being quarantined and left 13 of the over 700 infected crew and passengers dead. Japan suspended accepting foreign cruise ships the following month.

The country announced in November last year that it would allow foreign cruise ships to return as part of efforts to boost inbound tourism.

The Diamond Princess left the United States in February and docked at the Port of Kobe on Wednesday before its arrival in Yokohama.

Nobuyoshi Shiratori, a local resident who was taking pictures of the Diamond Princess, said, "It is a large and beautiful ship, beyond my expectations. While I hope that (its arrival) will not lead to spreading the coronavirus, I am glad that liveliness has returned to the port."

After 9 yrs, Yokohama comes back as No. 1 cruise ship port in Japan

Y OKOHAMA -- In 2023, this east Japan metropolis for the first time in nine years claimed the top spot as Japan's port of call for cruise ships.

According to the Yokohama Municipal Government, the number of stops at the Port of Yokohama by ships of domestic and foreign origin reached 171. One of the reasons for the increase in port stops is on a gradual recovery from the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

After opening to international cruise ships again last March, the port received 89 more ships than the year prior. According to the city's cruise industry promotion department, an estimated 470,000 people landed in the city. The port led the nation with stops by 101 foreign ships and was in second place for domestic ships with 70 visits.

The port was the nation's top for a 12-year stretch until 2014. With the popularity of the Port of Hakata in the city of Fukuoka and the Port of Nagasaki among Chinese tourists, Yokohama fell to third spot in 2015. Despite improved numbers, Yokohama remained in third or fourth place through 2019, then in second from 2020 to 2022 amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The once-thriving cruises from China did not fully return to Japanese ports in 2023, which is thought to be a factor in Yokohama's comeback. With their full return, however, a Yokohama official predicts, "Yokohama's No. 1 place is tenuous," as destinations such as Kyushu and Okinawa see the ships again.

However, in March and April as cruise season approaches, Yokohama is scheduled to welcome a series of foreign liners that will enter the port for the first time. The city has high hopes for the increased activity and the synergistic effects these will bring.
