For his efforts, Hovland will leave with top prize of $18 million from the lucrative $75 million season-ending event, while Xander Schauffele will take home a $6.5 million consolation prize for finishing runner-up at 22 under.

In total eight players cleared more than $1 million from this week’s event, including third-place finisher Wyndham Clark (16 under, $5 million), Rory McIlroy in fourth (14 under, $4 million) and Patrick Cantlay (13 under, $3 million) in fifth. Collin Morikawa, Tommy Fleetwood and Scottie Scheffler each earned $2 million for finishing 16 shots back, T-6 at 11 under.

2023 Tour Championship final results: Prize money payout, leaderboard and how much each golfer won

pga tour championship payout 2023

The 2023 Tour Championship final leaderboard is headed by winner Viktor Hovland , who prevailed by a shot to win the FedEx Cup at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Ga.

Starting the final round well ahead of the field, Hovland still needed to play great golf to pick up the win. Xander Schauffele challenged Hovland with a front-nine 31, but Hovland kept his cool and made several timely putts to get to the trophy, his second in a row and third in 2023.

After starting the tournament on 8 under par, Hovland shot a 72-hole score of 19-under 261 to win on 27-under total and won by five over Schauffele, who closed with 62 and was 19-under total for the week.

Schauffele finished in second place, well ahead of Wyndham Clark , who ended up in solo third place, a shot ahead of Rory McIlroy .

Hovland won the $18,000,000 winner's share of the $59,725,000 purse.

Tour Championship recap notes

Hovland and Schauffele had the lowest 72-hole score in the event without starting strokes, meaning they split the 44.1 first-place Official World Golf Ranking points with the win in the 72-hole stroke-play championship, which will boost their individual world ranking.

Hovland earns a five-year PGA Tour exemption for winning the FedEx Cup.

A total of 30 players finished the tournament in the 48th event of the 2020-2023 PGA Tour season after a 36-hole cut was not made.

The 2022-2023 PGA Tour FedEx Cup schedule is over, but the FedEx Fall starts in two weeks with the Fortinet Championship in California.

The PGA Tour season draws to a close with the top 30 players in the FedEx Cup standings competing at East Lake in Georgia.

As well as a far smaller field than other events on the PGA Tour, the Tour Championship also has a unique scoring system based on each player's FedEx Cup standings before the tournament.

Sitting at the top of the list is World No.1 Scottie Scheffler . Thanks to that achievement, he starts with a two-shot advantage over his nearest competitor on 10-under.

The player closest to him is Viktor Hovland, thanks largely to his win in second FedEx Cup Playoff tournament, the BMW Championship at Olympia Fields. The Norwegian claimed victory in some style, too. In the final round, he carded a 61, the lowest in FedEx Cup Playoff history. Meanwhile, it was also the lowest of his career and a course record.

Given he's heading into this week's tournament on the back of such an impressive performance, it's unlikely Scheffler will feel comfortable at the top despite his two-shot head start.

Viktor Hovland begins two shots off the lead

One shot behind Hovland is Rory McIlroy , who starts at seven under. The 34-year-old is aiming for a record fourth FedEx Cup title as he attempts to replicate his win at East Lake last season, when he edged out Sungae Im and Scheffler in a thrilling final round . Given McIlroy's form of late, which has included top-10 finishes in each of his last nine starts, few would bet against him winning.

While each of the top three have good reason to believe they can lift the trophy on Sunday evening, there are several other realistic candidates. One is Masters champion Jon Rahm , who starts four shots off the lead. The Spaniard began 2023 in scintillating form, and if he can return to his best this week, he'll be in with an excellent chance of securing his first FedEx Cup title.

Lucas Glover, at five under, will also be hoping to continue a hot streak that has brought two wins in the last month, including the opening FedEx Cup PlayOff tournament, the FedEx St. Jude Championship . There is added incentive for the American to perform well as he still has a chance of persuading Ryder Cup captain Zach Johnson he is worthy of a wildcard for the match.

Beyond those players, others looking to eat into Scheffler's lead will be 2021 FedEx Cup winner Patrick Cantlay , who starts at four under, along with Max Homa , who ranks seventh in the world, Open champion Brian Harman . US Open winner Wyndham Clark and the player who won the Major in 2022, Matt Fitzpatrick, also begin six off the lead.

Other big names in the field include Tommy Fleetwood , Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele , who each begin at three under, while 2015 FedEx Cup winner Jordan Spieth begins 10 off the lead.

The tournament boasts a purse of $75m, with the winner taking home a huge $18m, while the runner-up will win $6.5m.

Who Won The 2022 Tour Championship?

Rory McIlroy claimed his third FedEx Cup trophy in 2022 following a thrilling final day. That was despite getting the tournament off to the worst possible start with a triple-bogey. In the end, McIlroy edged out Sungae Im and Scottie Scheffler to claim the $18m first prize.

The FedExCup playoffs will conclude at the Tour Championship and for the second straight season, Scottie Scheffler will begin the finale with a two-stroke advantage.

Despite finishing co-runner-up at the BMW Championship, Scheffler is No. 1 in the FedExCup standings. With the staggered scoring system in place, he’ll start at East Lake at 10 under par.

BMW Championship winner Viktor Hovland, who closed in an Olympia Fields course-record 61, is second in points and opens the Tour Championship at 8 under.

Scheffler was in the same position a year ago and built a six-stroke lead through 54 holes, before closing in 75 and tying for second, behind champion Rory McIlroy.

The top 30 in FedExCup points qualified for the event. Matt Fitzpatrick was the lone player to jump inside the cut line, thanks to his play in the second playoff event. His tie for second moved him from 40th to 10th, while Chris Kirk dropped from 29th to 32nd.

There is no official purse at East Lake, but there is a $75 million bonus pool, with $18 million going to the winner.

Starting scores are based on where players stand in FedExCup points following the first two playoff events. Here’s how the field will commence the Tour Championship, along with the full bonus payout.

Tour Championship 2023: How $75 Million in Prize Money Breaks Down at the FedEx Cup Finale

pga tour championship payout 2023

A massive pool of FedEx Cup prize money will be divvied up this weekend — let’s discuss what the PGA Tour’s biggest stars stand to earn at the Tour Championship.

Remember when the PGA Tour and LIV Golf were involved in a world-historical feud, sued each other approximately 42,690 times (don’t look that up, it’s just science), and then agreed to merge like some kind of bizarro will-they-or-won’t-they sitcom plot resolution? Like, when the writers’ room is really, really out of ideas?

Well, from a US regulatory perspective, the chances that Saudi Arabia’s sovereign Public Investment Fund becomes the only major investor in the proposed venture are basically zero, but as it relates to dollar signs, the PGA Tour nonetheless got the memo — in today’s golf environment, you gotta pony up big-time.

The Tour Championship , which begins Thursday, Aug. 24 at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, marks the finale of the FedEx Cup Playoffs , the PGA Tour’s trendy competition format that seeks to recognize the year’s best players overall. Is it The Masters? No. But you don’t get $18 million for winning The Masters.

Yes, $18 million.

There’s a lot to parse here, so let’s explain how the full $75 million load of FedEx Cup prize money really breaks down! With 2022 Masters champion Scottie Scheffler entering as the favorite to take the top prize as Viktor Hovland and Rory McIlroy nip at his heels, welcome to Boardroom’s 2023 Tour Championship payout party.

Get on our list for weekly sports business, industry trends, interviews, and more.

An important final note — these figures are not actually Tour Championship prize money per se. Rather, they represent FedEx Cup payouts for the entire season of the competition; the Tour Championship simply represents the final event on the calendar. As a result, though just the top 30 golfers in the standings are competing this week at East Lake, 150 players will receive some share of the $75 million FedEx Cup prize money pool , with no bag smaller than $85,000.

All told, 125 competitors are guaranteed a six-figure check, but in one strict sense, the “official” Tour Championship payout is still zero. All that work for nothing, Scottie Scheffler! What a racket.

PGA Championship 2023: Here's the new record prize money payout for each golfer at Oak Hill

2023 PGA Championship

Darren Carroll/PGA of America

Another major, another major purse increase. On Saturday, the PGA of America released the prize money payout for each golfer at the 2023 PGA Championship, revealing a $2.5 million bump from a year ago.

The 76 golfers who made the cut at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, N.Y., were competing for $17.5 million, with the winner on Sunday, Brooks Koepka, earning $3.15 million along with the Wanamaker Trophy. The increase comes after a $3 million boost in 2022 to $15 million. The overall purse is now $6.5 million more than was paid out in 2020 at TPC Harding Park.

The increase wasn’t surprising, perhaps, after the Masters boosted its purse to $18 million in April. Yet the payouts are a bit modest in the face of the $20 million purses being offered in PGA Tour designated events and in LIV Golf League tournaments.

For the time being, the PGA Championship is the second-highest paying men’s major. The USGA paid $17.5 million at U.S. Open in 2022 at The Country Club and the R&A offered $14 million last July at The 150th Open St. Andrews. All the majors, trail the Players Championship, which paid out $25 million in March with winner Scottie Scheffler earning $4.5 million.

The evolution of the prize money payout in the PGA Championship offers an interesting look at the trajectory of golf purses in general over the years. Here's a look at what the payouts had been in the past.

Year: Winner's Pay, Total Purse 1916: $500, $2,580 (first year of the event) 1931: $1,000, $7,200 (first year winner's pay increased) 1953: $5,000, $20,700 (first year winner's pay was $5K) 1958: $5,500, $39,388 (first year of stroke play, also the winner's amount actually decreased that year) 1965: $25,000, $149,700 1978: $50,000, $300,240 1983: $100,000, $608,099 1988: $160,000, $1,000,000 (first year with a $1M total purse) 1993: $300,000, $1,702,750 1998: $540,000, $2,886,800 2000: $900,000, $5,031,100 (first year with a $5M total purse) 2003: $1,080,000, $5,938,300 (first year with $1M-plus to the winner) 2009: $1,350,000, $7,484,500 2014: $1,800,000, $9,913,000 2018: $1,980,000, $11,000,000 2021: $2,160,000, $12,000,000 2022: $2,700,000, $15,000,000 2023: $3,150,000, $17,500,000

Here is a breakdown of the prize money payouts for each place in the field. (We’ll update this on Sunday when we know what each player specifically earned for his efforts at Oak Hills.)

2023 Tour Championship purse, prize money: Payout for Viktor Hovland, every golfer in FedEx Cup Playoffs final

A big trophy and an even bigger payday is on the line this week as the pga tour postseason comes to a close.

fedex-cup-trophy.jpg

The final payday of the season will arrive in players' bank accounts soon following the 2023 Tour Championship, which concluded Sunday. Competing for the FedEx Cup bonus pool of $75 million, the remaining field of 30 players at East Lake Golf Club tried to make one final splash before calling it an offseason.

Every player who finished inside the top 150 of the FedEx Cup standings will receive some portion of this bonus, but nearly $60 million of it was still up for grabs in Atlanta. A player's career earnings will not technically grow because of his performance in the postseason final, but that doesn't mean the money is not astronomical.

For the second straight year, $18 million was be awarded to the FedEx Cup winner -- Viktor Hovland -- with every player inside the top 10 cashing seven figures. All 30 players enjoyed the luxury of claiming at least $500,000, even if their play resulted in a last-place finish.

Scottie Scheffler was the only man to surpass $18 million in earnings this season, and he was on the cusp of a $40 million year if he won his first FedEx Cup crown. Alas, that did not happen. Hovland, Jon Rahm, Rory Mcilroy, Wyndham Clark, Max Homa and Patrick Cantlay all entered East Lake with at least $10 million already under their belts.

Below is a look at the payouts for each golfer from the field of 30 at the 2023 Tour Championship.

Rick Gehman is joined by Kyle Porter, Patrick McDonald and Greg DuCharme to break down Viktor Hovland's clinical performance at the Tour Championship. He is the 2023 FedEx Cup Champion. Follow & listen to The First Cut on  Apple Podcasts  and  Spotify .

PGA Championship 2024: Prize money payouts at Valhalla hit another record-breaking number

I t’s a sign of the times in men’s professional golf. The question wasn’t whether the PGA of America was going to increase its prize money payout for each golfer at this year’s PGA Championship to another record payday. Rather, it was by how much.

That amount turned out to be $1 million, the PGA of America announcing Saturday that its overall purse had jumped to $18.5 million with the winner on Sunday at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville taking home $3.33 million.

To put that number in perspective, just four years ago at TPC Harding Park, the overall purse was $11 million. But then the PGA of America bumped the amount by $1 million for the 2021 PGA at Kiawah, $3 million more for the 2022 PGA at Southern Hills and another $2.5 million for the 2023 PGA at Oak Hill.

Here's a look at the evolution of the prize money payout in the PGA Championship, offering a revealing glance at the trajectory of golf purses in general over the years:

Year: Winner's Pay, Total Purse 1916: $500, $2,580 (first year of the event) 1931: $1,000, $7,200 (first year winner's pay increased) 1953: $5,000, $20,700 (first year winner's pay was $5K) 1958: $5,500, $39,388 (first year of stroke play; winner's amount actually decreased that year) 1965: $25,000, $149,700 1978: $50,000, $300,240 1983: $100,000, $608,099 1988: $160,000, $1,000,000 (first year with a $1M total purse) 1993: $300,000, $1,702,750 1998: $540,000, $2,886,800 2000: $900,000, $5,031,100 (first year with a $5M total purse) 2003: $1,080,000, $5,938,300 (first year with $1M-plus to the winner) 2009: $1,350,000, $7,484,500 2014: $1,800,000, $9,913,000 2018: $1,980,000, $11,000,000 2021: $2,160,000, $12,000,000 2022: $2,700,000, $15,000,000 2023: $3,150,000, $17,500,000

The latest jump, however, leaves the PGA Championship’s purse shy of the $20 million paydays offered in the PGA Tour’s new signature events as well as the $20 million paydays being played for individually on the LIV Golf circuit.

Here is a breakdown of the prize money payouts for each place in the field. (We’ll update this on Sunday when we know what each player specifically earned for his efforts at Valhalla.)

PGA Championship 2024 purse will likely set record. Here's how prize money has grown

pga tour championship payout 2023

Golf's four major tournaments have only grown more lucrative over the years.

That trend should continue when the 2024 PGA Championship tees off this week at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville.

We'll learn how much money is up for grabs in addition to the Wanamaker Trophy in the coming days.

For now, here's a breakdown of last year's PGA Championship purse and how it stacked up against those at the Masters , the U.S. Open and the Open Championship :

How much money did 2023 PGA Championship winner earn? Payouts for top finishers

Last year's PGA Championship winner, Brooks Koepka , received $3.15 million (18% of a record $17.5 million purse) for his two-stroke victory at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York.

In a tie for second, Viktor Hovland and Scottie Scheffler took home $1.54 million apiece.

The third-place golfer was set to earn $1.19 million; but, in light of Hovland and Scheffler's tie, Cameron Davis , Bryson DeChambeau and Kurt Kitayama each got $720,000 for finishing deadlocked at fourth on the leaderboard.

Two years ago, Louisville native Justin Thomas claimed $2.7 million of a $15 million purse for beating Will Zalatoris in a playoff at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

And, for reference, here's a look at how much money each winner of past PGA Championships at Valhalla earned:

  • Rory McIlroy (2014): $1.8 million of a $10 million purse
  • Tiger Woods (2000): $900,000 of a $5 million purse
  • Mark Brooks (1996): $430,000 of a $2.4 million purse

How did 2023 PGA Championship purse compare to golf's other majors?

The PGA Championship had a record $2.5 million increase to its purse in 2023.

Still, it lagged behind two of golf's three other three major tournaments in terms of how much money was at stake:

  • U.S. Open: $20 million ($3.6 million for winner)
  • Masters: $18 million ($3.24 million)
  • PGA Championship: $17.5 million ($3.15 million)
  • Open Championship: $16.5 million ($3 million)

To kick off this year's slate of majors, the Masters had a $20 million purse; $3.6 million of which went to Scheffler for his four-stroke victory at Augusta National Golf Club.

2024 PGA Championship tee times, pairings: Complete schedule on TV, groups for Round 3 on Friday at Valhalla

Golfers will look to position themselves for the weekend after valhalla played well through the first 36 holes.

xander-schauffele-round-2-pga-championship-hole-18-g.jpg

Moving Day is upon us at the 2024 PGA Championship as a stacked leaderboard will look to shake itself out Saturday at Valhalla Golf Club. With some of the biggest stars in the sport vying for there Wanamaker Trophy, the third set of 18 holes in Louisville will be hotly contested as the best the game have to offer seek to position themselves for a final run at the trophy Sunday.

After Round 2 was delayed due to darkness, play was further pushed Saturday morning due to heavy fog rolling into the property. Due to this, players will be going off in threesomes on Nos. 1 and 10 for the third round.

The trio to bring up the rear will consist of three Americans as 18- and 36-hole leader Xander Schauffele is joined by two-time major champion Collin Morikawa and Sahith Theegala. The final group will tee off at No. 1 at 1:40 p.m. ET. A couple groups to keep an eye on before the leaders get going include the threesome of Max Homa, Cameron Smith and Jordan Spieth at 11:28 a.m. along with Bryson DeChambeau, Viktor Hovland and Austin Eckroat at 1:18 p.m.

Meanwhile, the likes of Jon Rahm, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson have played their way out of competition. Woods triple-bogeyed the first two holes of this PGA Championship career during his first nine Friday to eject himself from the cutline, while Mickelson was slightly better but still nowhere near contention. Rahm fared better than both but never showcased his best stuff in Louisville, finishing at even par through 36 holes and one stroke below the line.

Take a look at the full slate of Round 3 tee times for the PGA Championship, and be sure to check out our PGA Championship TV schedule and coverage guide so you can watch as many shots as possible on Saturday.

The 2024 PGA Championship comes to an end on Sunday, May 19, with the final round at Valhalla Golf Club . You can see the complete Sunday tee times for the final round of the PGA Championship at the bottom of this post.

PGA Round 4 tee times

UPDATE: Xander Schauffele and Collin Morikawa both birdied the 18th hole on Saturday to tie for the lead at 15 under heading into Sunday’s final round of the PGA Championship.

They will tee off in the final pairing on Sunday at 2:35 p.m. ET. Sahith Theegala and Shane Lowry will occupy the penultimate pairing, beginning their rounds at 2:25 p.m. ET. You can browse the full 2024 PGA Championship Sunday tee times below.

——————–

We already know that Xander Schauffele , Collin Morikawa , Bryson DeChambeau and Scottie Scheffler will be among the star attractions contending for the Wanamaker trophy on Sunday at Valhalla. But we don’t yet know exactly when they’ll start their rounds.

Provided there is good weather, competitors will play in two-man pairings on Sunday, with all pairings starting off the 1st tee. The players at the bottom of the leaderboard will tee off first, with the leaders teeing off in the final pairing. For that reason, we won’t know the exact times until Round 3 is over Saturday night. But we can look to the past to get an approximation of what the Sunday tee times will be.

At the 2023 PGA Championship at Oak Hill, Sunday’s final round got underway at 7:50 a.m. ET . Brooks Koepka and Viktor Hovland set out in the final pairing at 2:30 p.m. ET. We can expect Sunday tee times for this year to be similar.

You can watch Sunday’s final round of the 2024 PGA Championship on TV via ESPN and CBS, with coverage beginning on ESPN at 10 a.m. ET and continuing on CBS at 1 p.m. ET. Or you can watch streaming coverage all day Sunday via ESPN+ , including exclusive early action, featured group coverage and much more starting at 8 a.m. ET.
